JOHN WILLIAMS composer

O

ne of the most popular and successful American orchestral composers of the modern age, John Williams is the winner of five Academy Awards, 17 GRAMMY® Awards, three Golden Globes, two Emmys, and five British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards. Best known for his film scores and ceremonial music, he is also a noted composer of concert works and a renowned conductor. Williams has composed the music and served as music director for nearly 80 films. His scores for Jaws, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Schindler’s List, and the Indiana Jones series have won him multiple awards and produced best-selling recordings. His scores for the original Star Wars trilogy transformed the landscape of Hollywood film music and have become icons of American culture. He has been awarded several Gold and Platinum records, and his score for Schindler’s List earned him both an Oscar and a GRAMMY®. Williams was born in New York and moved to Los Angeles with his family in 1948. There he attended UCLA and studied composition privately with Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. After service in the Air Force, he returned to New York to attend The Juilliard School, where he studied piano with Madame Rosina Lhévinne. He then returned to Los Angeles, where he began his career in the film industry, working with such composers as Bernard Herrmann, Alfred Newman, and Franz Waxman. He went on to write music for many television programs in the 1960s, winning two Emmy Awards for his work. In January 1980, Williams was named 19th conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra. He assumed the title of Boston Pops Laureate Conductor following his retirement in December 1993 and currently holds the title of Artist-in-Residence at Tanglewood. Williams has written many concert pieces, including a symphony; a sinfonietta for wind ensemble; a cello concerto premiered by Yo-Yo Ma and the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood in 1994; concertos for flute and violin recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra; concertos for clarinet and tuba; and a trumpet concerto, which

was premiered by The Cleveland Orchestra and their principal trumpet Michael Sachs in September 1996. His most recent concert work is Seven for Luck, a seven-piece song cycle based on the texts of former U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove.

onductor Jeffrey Schindler enjoys a dynamic career that takes him from concert podiums around the world, to the scoring stages of Hollywood, to the recording studios of London. A versatile conductor, he has appeared with the Seattle Symphony, London Symphony Orchestra, Czech Philharmonic, and London Session Orchestra, among others. Also a virtuoso harpsichordist and organist, he has performed nationally and appeared in concert with members of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, and New York Philharmonic. Schindler’s talents as a conductor, orchestrator, and arranger place him in high demand with film composers, and he has led sessions for many international feature film and television projects. His more than 250 production credits include XMen: Apocalypse, XMen: Days of Future Past, Jack the Giant Slayer, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Talladega Nights, Anchorman, 22 Jump Street, The Invasion, and the Academy Award-winning March of the Penguins, as well as orchestrations for Broadway composer Stephen Schwartz. Schindler approaches teaching and outreach with the same energy and passion that he brings to the podium. He has taught conducting at the world-renowned Conductors’ Institutes in Hartford, Connecticut, and Varna, Bulgaria, as well as at the Hartt School of Music; the University of California, Los Angeles; the University of California, Santa Barbara; and the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. A gifted conducting teacher and coach, he has seen many of his students go on to significant careers throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia.
