We caught up with David Roffman, retired publisher of the Georgetowner, in New Orleans during the combined journalists’ convention at the Sheraton on Canal Street. After her Sept. 25 talk in the convention’s ballroom, Roffman met CNN’s Soledad O’Brien. He revisited the French Quarter, where he had not been for years, and had some great dinners at Arnaud’s Restaurant and Commander’s Palace.

GT The Capella Georgetown Secures Funding, Plans to Open by the End of 2012 After some delay, the construction of The Capella luxury hotel can begin, funded by a joint venture, Castleton Hotel Partners, according to a press release from Capella Hotels and Resorts in early September.

Construction of The Capella Georgetown has been on the agenda for quite some time; the original plan was to open by Jan. 2012, according to a press release from Capella Hotels and Resorts in March 2010. “The developer experienced some difficulties with the funding,” said John Drake, vice president of marketing at Capella Hotels and Resorts, “but now we have secured funding and we would love to open by the end of 2012.” Castleton Holdings and ICG Properties is partnering with Point Ford Management Limited, a South Asian based investment firm, to secure funding for construction as well as management of the luxury hotel, according to the latest press release.

Robert Warman, executive vice president of West Paces Hotels, told USA Today that the Capella Georgetown will compete with Georgetown’s other luxury hotels, the Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons. Drake, however, is not afraid that this will be difficult for the Capella Georgetown. “I don’t want to sound arrogant but our hotel is a notch above the other hotels in the area,” Drake said, explaining that the Capella Hotels and Resorts offer personal service and assistance to their guests and adapts to their guests’ needs.

and room finishes,” according to a press release which says that the hotel will offer the pre-arrival services of personal assistants, luxury car service, 24 hour room service and a guest only spa and fitness center. The Capella Georgetown also entices guests with immediate access to the upscale shops and restaurants of Wisconsin Avenue and M Streets.

There will also be a restaurant and bar with outdoor seating along the C&O Canal, a private rooftop lounge and a rooftop indoor and outdoor pool overlooking the Potomac River and several Washington landmarks. The rooftop, however, might be “wishful thinking” as the Advisory Neighborhood Commission and the Old Georgetown Board previously have hesitated on similar matters, according to the Georgetown Patch.

Regardless, there is no question whether the Capella Georgetown will be a high-end place.

“The hotel is purposely very small in number of rooms,” says Drake, “and we will cater to top corporate managers, CEOs, diplomats and heads of state among others.” And the caliber of the hotel certainly matches that of the event that serves as an unspoken deadline for the project, the next presidential inauguration, Jan. 2013.

DDoT Makes Changes Circulator Route

At the beginning of this week, the D.C. Department of Transportation made some changes to the Circulator route through Georgetown. It eliminated stops and then added or combined others.

Stops at Wisconsin Avenue and P Street NW, both eastbound and westbound, were eliminated as well as at Wisconsin Avenue and N Street

NW heading westbound, and M and 31st streets NW heading eastbound.

The Circulator website posted that while these changes may have caused customers to walk a few extra blocks to and from the new stops, they have reduced the amount of stops and helped maintain their 10-minute headways to get everyone to where they want to go faster.

On PostOpinions in the Washington Post, Topher Mathews explained that users will be pleased and angered depending on the amount of times they use these stops.

The Georgetown Metropolitan explains the same situation for the Circulator users. “Eliminating a handful of stops at N and P St,” the Georgetown Metropolitan explained, “probably makes sense in that the stops at O and Q will still exist and are really very close to the eliminated stops.” In other words, because some stops are so close together, eliminating some basically created one large, combined stop out of another.

A stop was also added at 35th Street and Wisconsin Avenue. This is where the Georgetown-Union Station buses turn back around to head back toward Union Station. This is giving the line an expansion but because of the eliminations the 10-minute headways will still have room to improve and stay intact. This week will determine whether these goals were met or not.

Upbeat Mayor Agrees With Community on Campus Plan Aside from residential real estate questions and a re-design for Washington Harbour, the main event for the Oct. 3 meeting of the

Georgetown-Burleith Advisory Neighborhood Commission was Mayor Vincent Gray, who told the capacity crowd at Visitation Prep, “I support the community.” Introduced by Ward 2 councilman Jack Evans, Gray was talking about Georgetown University’s 10-year campus plan which the residents of Georgetown opposed as it stands today and which the mayor found the opposition “well-grounded.” He also said he would not lift the student cap on the university.

“Based on information that I have, it looks like there has been some positive movement and hopefully we’ll continue in that direction,” the mayor said, citing a student shuttle plan. There would be, he said, “a campus plan on which the university and the community can agree.”

There were more compliments to the mayor than questions about the university plans, as Gray seemed to give both a pep talk and victory speech about D.C. and his administration.

The mayor then listed four major goals he said the District government had achieved: fiscal stability, “a structurally balanced budget” that does not exceed revenue and a self-imposed debt gap of 12 percent; quality education, where special needs were addressed and student-teacher ratios maintained between 1 to 20 or 1 to 22; jobs and economic development, given the new City Center and an adult jobs program that is fully funded; public safety with 35 new police recruits added just that morning, with more to come.

Gray touted that D.C. had sold $900 million in bonds at .27 percent interest. Stressing his commitment to education, Gray added that D.C. is “the only city in America with universal preK” programs. As for unemployment hovering at 11 percent, the mayor announced his “One City - One Hire” project with the goal of getting

10,000 hired in the next year. When he spoke of greater District representation and Congress, he called it “the hypocrisy of democracy” and pointed to commissioner Jake Sticka’s D.C. Votes sticker on his laptop on the commissioners’ dais.

As for the ANC redistricting plan that passed the local group, Gray said he would defer to those who worked on the panel and Evans and got little push back on the matter. The mayor even brought up the possibility of talking to the consortium of local universities on some kind of service tax or their abilities to pitch in to help the District.

In other discussions, Evans said that two of his bicycles had been stolen from his van but remained positive, talking about how great Georgetown is for Halloween and the new Waterfront Park. Commissioner Tom Birch thanked the mayor and Lt. Hedgecock for the police’s swift response to a purse-snatching on P Street recently. Earlier, Hedgecock had said that residential property crime were up 88 percent but was happy to report that homicides were down 17 percent for D.C, year to date.

Acknowledging neighbors’ frustrations, commissioner Jeff Jones reported on the progress of the reconstruction of O and P Streets: “There is more work being done than seen, replacing the underground utilities.” Neighbors had complained about delays, parking tickets and the general construction mess and noise.

on October 7, 1954, a Singular Newspaper Made Its Debut

A

mi Stewart, who worked as a sales representative for the Washington Star, told the Randolph sisters at Little Caledonia, a famed home goods store on Wisconsin Avenue, of her plans to begin a community newspaper. They encouraged her, and the Georgetowner was born on the fabric table of that shop, publishing its Volume 1, Number 1, on Oct. 7, 1954.

The newspaper grew with its news and profiles of a quieter time and homespun ads of retail along Wisconsin Avenue and M Street. It is a delight to look at the archives and interesting to see the story, written before the 1960 election season, on an N Street resident who was planning a run for president: John F. Kennedy.

Stewart ran the Georgetowner until the mid1970s when she moved to a nursing home. Her assistant editor since the late ‘60s had been David Roffman, another transplant from the Midwest to D.C., who helped her along with others like Richard McCooey of 1789 Restaurant who sent meals to her home.

The newspaper office was at the corner of 28th and M Streets above Chi Chi’s Poodle Parlor (the space is now Das Ethiopian Restaurant, the former Zed’s). The Georgetowner moved from there to what was Crumpet’s in 1200 block of Wisconsin Avenue and then across the street above Swensen’s Ice Cream. Over the years, the newspaper has occupied space in Hamilton Court (31st Street) and Georgetown Court (Prospect Street). That’s called getting to know your neighborhood.

Roffman took over upon Stewart’s passing and gave the newspaper his own flare, especially during the go-go 1980s. He swept the streets

with an elephant vac, getting his picture in a national publication, and called for Georgetown to secede from D.C. more than once.

The crew of writers and sales reps included his brother Randy Roffman. Then arriving from California, writer Gary Tischler remains with the paper and is considered central to its heart and soul.

Here is how Tischler described his old friend, Roffman, who was given the lifetime achievement award in 2010 by the Georgetown Business Association, where he was once its president: “Small community newspapers are tricky businesses — they’re usually free, they depend on the kindness of local businesses to provide advertising revenue, they reflect and report on and are reflective of the community they serve.

With all due respect to other such publications in this city, no other paper is so associated with place than the Georgetowner. And it’s fair to say that Roffman, when he owned and published the paper, reflected the community in all of its facets.

“He wasn’t just a publisher, and his efforts weren’t only about stories, scoops, ads, deadlines and headlines. He was the village’s biggest cheerleader and booster, acting as if Georgetown were a particular lovely, elegant lady who needed to be helped across the street.

He sometimes acted as if she were a party girl, to be sure, but that was part of the times.

Roffman would do stuff — he hosted parties, fund-raisers, publicized charity events (at good old, reliable Nathans), promoted festivals (the annual Francis Scott Key day), institutions (the Georgetown Senior Center was a particular favorite) and events (Volta Park Day). He

got involved — he went to ANC Meetings and CAG meetings, not just to report on them, but to speak at them and make himself heard. . . .

In the pages of Roffman’s Georgetowner, the neighborhood became full bodied — it was the sleepy village and the noisy night time, it was contemporary and historic all at once. It was a classy place, but it was also democratic.”

Today, owner and publisher Sonya Bernhardt, also with Midwest connections, has entered her 13th year at the helm of the newspaper which is now part of the Georgetown Media Group.

She publishes the Georgetowner and the Downtowner, runs the business side, directs the group’s presence on the web and social media and staff and interns. Her passions include the community as well as promotion of small and local businesses. She is also an avid fundraiser for various causes including research for cancer cures. With the newspaper, she is committed to the Georgetown House Tour, the Senior Center, Living in Pink, Volta Park Day and Francis Scott Key Park, to name a few local charities.

Here is her take on the media product: “Our publication reflects the Georgetown lifestyle, focusing on the arts, history, real estate, education, dining, health, fashion and philanthropy.

With a print circulation of 40,000, the Georgetowner is mailed to all Georgetown residents and businesses and has a thriving website. The newspapers’ distribution covers parts of D.C., Maryland and Virginia.”

The endlessly energetic Bernhardt has put her mark on the newspaper whose “influence far exceeds its size,” and taken it firmly into the 21st century. A portrait of founder Ami Stewart hangs above her office mantle. And, yes, the office is on Potomac Street, next to Dean & Deluca; it’s been there for the last 10 years.

Why Age 65? How About 85?

hy is age 65 the retirement age?

Legend has it that when Otto von Bismarck, Chancellor of Germany in the 1880s, proposed the world’s first retirement insurance program, he asked his advisors, “How long do people usually live?” When told the average life span was 45 or 50 years, he said, “Then, let’s give a pension to everyone at age 65.”

Myths rarely line up with reality. Germany set that first retirement age at 70, certainly no budget buster.

By 1935, when Congress was considering Social Security, Germany had lowered its retirement age to 65. Many states and some large US companies had pension plans with retirement ages ranging from 65 to 70. By then, the average life expectancy was 60 years.

Congress adopted age 65, apparently anticipating that it would not cost much, especially since most people wouldn’t live long enough to receive it.

Thirty years later, Congress passed Medicare.

By then, average life expectancy was 70 years.

To offset the cost of these programs, Congress created taxes to be shared equally by employers and employees. Social Security taxes were expected to cover the cost. In 1965, medical expenses didn’t consume 17 percent of the economy as it does today. So, when Congress enacted the Medicare tax, it only covered approximately 14 percent of costs. No tax was

enacted to cover Medicaid costs.

After Medicare and Medicaid were passed, federal government spending on health care jumped to 5 percent of total spending.

Today, the average citizen lives to be almost 80. Medicare, Medicaid and other federal health care programs consume more than 25 percent of all federal spending and with projected increases of 10 percent per year, health care will consume 30 percent of the federal budget within five years.

The average cost to insure a family now exceeds $15,000 per year, more than a minimum wage worker earns in a year.

Yes, some of that increase is related to the new health care law. It’s 1 percent of that increase, mostly from allowing children to remain on their parents’ policies until they are 26 years old. The other 9 percent is the inexorable, uncontrollable creep of costs.

The harsh reality is that taxes dedicated to covering health care cover less than 10 percent of the federal government’s costs.

As a nation, we have to ask ourselves: How much longer can we bring in a dime and spend a dollar?

With the average citizen living almost 20 years longer than in 1935 and with 80 million baby boomers over or approaching age 65, ignoring the cost of social security and health care is like following Thelma and Louise – right over a cliff.

The political irony is that both political parties want the same thing: something for nothing.

Republicans refuse to consider any new revenue source. Democrats draw the line at changing Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

The need for compromise is painfully obvious, but the political cost is equally obvious. Compromise means facing the wrath of voters.

Are there any solutions? No easy ones.

Regulate profits in the medical sector the way utility company profits are regulated by the government. (That’s going to make some enemies.)

Universal health care contains costs in other countries. The U.S. spends double on health care what other countries spend, yet US life expectancy ranks about 40th in the world. Apparently, American citizens prefer to die sooner as long as the government stays out of health care.

Or, take a page from Bismarck’s playbook: Provide benefits for those who outlive the average person by, say, five years. That’s what Congress did when it started Social Security. In other words, with life expectancy approaching 80, begin providing benefits at age 85.

As ridiculous as that sounds, consider that It would be consistent with Social Security’s “original intent.” It would balance the budget.

It might even lower life expectancy. And that would further reduce budget pressures.

Is it any more ridiculous than refusing to face the reality that retirement and health benefits for 80 million baby boomers can be provided without a revenue source, without any government regulation, and without a meaningful change in the retirement age?

And, most importantly, without compromise?

t is with great disappointment that I report to you that the D.C. Council voted last week to raise our income tax for the first time in 30 years. Last week, at our first meeting after the summer recess, Phil Mendelson and Mary Cheh led an effort to raise the income tax rate from 8.5 percent to 8.95 percent on incomes over $350,000. Cheh and Mendelson were joined by Councilmembers Jim Graham, Harry Thomas, Tommy Wells, Yvette Alexander and Michael Brown in passing the measure, giving the District the fifth highest income tax rate in the country. I have been opposed to the idea to increase the income tax rate ever since it was first proposed by Mayor Vincent Gray earlier this year. It was simply not necessary in light of the hundreds of millions of dollars in new revenue already identified by the District’s chief financial officer this year.

Notwithstanding the facts, proponents argued that the income tax increase was necessary to undo the ill-advised municipal bond tax – in fact, this was a false choice – an amendment I offered would have obviated the need for both new tax proposals due to the most recent $89 million in projected new revenue. My amendment failed, 7-6, however, after the seventh and deciding vote was cast by Mary Cheh to raise the income tax.

Another justification presented by those who want to gratuitously raise income taxes is that it will make the income tax more progressive. In response to that point, I asked that we consider lowering the income tax rate for lower income taxpayers, which would make the income tax rate structure more progressive without stifling economic growth.

In the same way the recent irresponsible brinksmanship in Congress undermined the confidence of voters around the country, not to mention the bond rating agencies, the disingenuous debate over the District’s finances will shake the confidence of District taxpayers who see their bills increase without justification.

The District has also suffered an adverse action on its bond credit rating – while this was due to issues relating to federal government spending cuts, it could possibly have been avoided if the District had more money in its savings account.

I am very concerned as we go forward about the attitude of the Mayor and the majority of the Council with respect to our finances. The city must live with the revenue we have, and we need to bring the exponential growth in government spending back under control.

As fall approaches, there is much to do, and I look forward to facing the many challenges before us.

The Mansion and the Cemetery

T

he plantation that would eventually become Arlington National Cemetery was originally the inheritance of George Washington Parke Custis who, in 1802, commissioned architect George Hadfield to design a great house for him on the hillside site. Curtis knew it would be seen from many vantage points across the Potomac River in Washington, and it would serve as an appropriate place to store the mementos from his adopted grandfather, George Washington. It was completed in 1817, and for the next 50 years it served as a working farm.

When Custis died, his only surviving child, the talented and vivacious Mary Anna Randolph Custis, inherited the house and in 1831, married her second cousin, a promising young Army officer, Robert E. Lee, who had graduated at the head of his class at West Point. The couple, who was married in the mansion, lived

there for the next 30 years and six of their seven children were born there. Lee served the Army faithfully, and when John Brown seized the arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Va., it was Lee who led the assault on the arsenal and arrested Brown.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, Lee was offered the post of commanding the Union Army, but chose instead to stay with his home state of Virginia, which was seceding from the Union.

While he was opposed to slavery and believed the Union would ultimately be preserved, he went to his study in the mansion in April of 1861, and wrote a letter resigning from the U.S. Army, casting his fate with the Confederate cause.

The Lee family left, and the mansion was soon occupied by the Union Army, who made it a headquarters. When the army began to search for appropriate burial grounds for the Union dead, the Union General Meigs recommended the Custis Lee farm. He was only too happy to

despoil the place and make it into a cemetery, because Meigs was Southerner who remained faithful to the Union, and hated the fact that Lee had joined the Confederate cause.

While it is now a privilege to be buried at Arlington, it was not so during the Civil War. Instead, it was a series of muddy fields with the graves of soldiers who were unknown, or whose families were too poor to bring the bodies of their relatives back home to be buried.

During the war, the farm still belonged to the Lee family until a property tax of $92.07 came due. Mary Lee sent the money in with a messenger, but it was refused, since the law said the owner had to appear in person. At that time Mary, who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, was confined to a wheelchair and couldn’t appear, so the family lost the mansion to the U.S. government, who bought it at a tax sale in 1864, for $26,000, and officially changed the name to Arlington National Cemetery.

In 1882, the Lee family contested the purchase, brought the argument all the way to the Supreme Court, and won back possession of the property. Then, the fear was that the government would have to dig up the dead and re-bury them somewhere else. The argument was settled when Mary and Robert E. Lee’s son agreed to sell the property to back to the government for $150,000 and it was kept as a cemetery.

After the war, Robert E. Lee went on to become president of what is now Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. While he remained a great hero in the South, he supported President Johnson’s efforts of reconstruction and reconciliation. But he never again set foot on his family’s legacy property after he left on April 22, 1861.

arade” (now at Ford’s Theatre through Oct. 30) sounds like a musical, it pretends to be a musical, it has fast numbers, soft numbers, ballads and rousing numbers that make you want to tap your feet.

As musicals go, “Parade,” with a book by Alfred Uhry and music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, is kind of subversive, so much so that an audience can get tricked into clapping after a rousing song sung by a gifted singer and then almost instantly feel weird for do so.

The number in question is “That’s What He Said,” sung by Kevin McAllister as Jim Conley, an African-American janitor at a pencil factory in Atlanta in 1913. What Conley is singing is his testimony at a trial in which Leo Frank, the northern Jewish factory manager, is being tried on charges that he murdered 13-year-old Mary Phagan, a factory worker and dumped her body in the basement. Conley is singing a song, a bald-faced lie of a story in which he says he was witnessed to the aftermath of the murder and helped Frank dispose of the body. He sings “That’s What He Said” in friendly, furious fashion, it’s almost a vaudeville tune that gets people going, makes you want to dance, in fact.

Of course, that’s not what you should want to do. You should be appalled, shocked, torn and bewildered by your own feelings, the natural inclination to clap for a show-stopping number at war with the horrible lie being told that will help railroad Frank to the end of a rope.

More important, this is a true thing, a horrible event in post-Civil War southern history that was already replete with regular lynching and murders of blacks during Jim Crow days.

Frank, a northerner from Brooklyn, had married a southern Jewish woman named Lucille and moved down South to manage the factory.

Mary Phagan was killed on Confederate Memorial Day in Atlanta, which included parades and picnics, a holiday memorial celebrating Confederate valor and the loss of the old South.

“Parade,” which had a run on Broadway under the auspices of producer Harold Prince no less, won a couple of Tonys but not much acclaim.

It should get some here, where the story and theme resonate mightily. It’s also been deemed the centerpiece of the programming for the Lincoln Legacy Project and is a co-production with Theater J. It’s also an often powerful, gut-wrenching hybrid theatrical evening. Unsettling and disjointed, a sharp, thoughtful and creatively staged and performed piece that has some of the aspirations of both a serious opera and the kind of conscience-hitting plays that came from Arthur Miller. But it’s also not exactly what it seems to be, which is a musical. You sometimes think

that Uhry and Brown are using the genre to get audiences to interact with the material in unaccustomed ways, the better to make an impact.

History tells us—and it’s no secret to tell the results—that in the end, Frank was convicted on almost totally fabricated, suborned lies and testimony by the victim’s friends, by the janitor and the Franks’ maid, among others, to satisfy the still bitter devotion to the Glorious Cause, a lasting hatred of northerners and blacks by the local Ku Klux Klan, supported by the establishment including a rabid newspaper publisher and author whose next book was going to offer up reasons why Jesus was not a Jew. The approach doesn’t always work. The casual use of non-traditional casting in having AfricanAmerican actors be members of crowds celebrating the Confederacy seems somehow altogether wrong, for instance. The music is often stirring, or, in quieter pieces with Frank and his wife, lovely and touching. Then again, songs pop up like period pieces from the times, and then again, you get a piece like “A Rumblin and a Rollin’,” which opens the second act, sung by black servants at a party with almost teethbared bitterness, a song that nicely is a bookend to a young Civil War-era soldier singing “The Old Red Hills of Home” setting off for war.

In a large cast, some of whom double and triple up, Euan Morton and Jenny Fellner stand out as Leo and Lucille Frank, who, singing and acting, manage to give a full portrait of a married couple. Often at a distance from each other in the early going they reveal their boundless love for each other in crisis. Will Gartshore is downright scary as an extremist politician and newspaper owner, steely and merciless. Stephen Schmidt as governor, John Slaton and Hugh Dorsey as a solicitor general with political ambitions, effectively define men dealing with their consciences: Slaton finds his; Dorsey misplaces it.

In the end, Slaton, after reviewing trial transcripts, commuted Frank’s death sentence to life, costing him his political future. A mob of KKK types broke into jail and hauled Frank out and lynched him. Frank’s murderers were not brought to justice and Mary Phagan’s killer was never found. Frank was granted a posthumous pardon in 1986, showing again, as if we didn’t know, that the wheels of justice grind exceedingly slow.

“Parade” is, I think, a complicated, nuanced work, and the production does it justice and honor. It is not a history lesson, or even a heavyhanded dose of moral lesson. It’s a powerful hybrid that uses the musical theater form as a way of reminding us in disturbing, moving, complicated ways, of how we live today, how far we’ve come, and how issues of tolerance, race, ethnicity, and just plain expressions of out-andout irrational hatred remain with us.

A

s geniuses tend to be, Edgar Degas was a compulsive revisionist. Returning to his canvases again and again, often over the course of decades, the artist left behind a wealth of visual pathways into his process upon his death in 1917. As geniuses tend to be, Degas was also a bit of a contradiction. He was a founding member of the Impressionist movement, though he vehemently rejected the label and his association with it.

Degas was a champion of an artistic revolution that moved painting beyond the gratifying of patrons and into the realm of true artistic exploration, paving the way for the explosion of cubism, abstract expressionism and beyond.

He fought among critic circles for the collective reputation and legitimacy of himself and his colleagues—Monet, Renoir and Delacroix to name a few—and produced among his most acclaimed works in this time (roughly 1870s – 1880s). Yet he called himself a “realist” and rejected comparisons among his contemporaries.

“What I do is the result of reflection and the study of the great masters,” he said.

But within each individual work, Degas managed to embody the monumental nature of artistic practice; he achieved a harmony and perfection of nature through practice, observation, trial, revision and an ever-scrutinizing eye.

His methodical, repetitive practice is frequently compared to the subject of his recurring painterly infatuation, the ballet dancer. While the spontaneity of his compositions may seem frozen precipitously in time—his ballerinas in imperfect repose between moments of rehearsal, turning out, warming up, preoccupied with nothing beyond their physical composition— the delicate beauty of these moments turn out to be nothing less than the result of countless studies and immeasurable, tedious compositional revisions. This relentless strive toward an ephemeral balance, delicate as the air floating about the plane of the canvas, is illuminated remarkably in the Phillips Collection’s current retrospective of his ballet paintings, focused around his seminal work, ‘Dancers at the Barre.’

“No art is less spontaneous than mine,” Degas once said. It would seem fitting then that he was focused so irrevocably on professional dancers.

The effusive, explosive nature of a pirouette, for instance, must be fluid and natural within the movement of the dance, but that graceful fluidity is something that only comes with obsessive, endless practice and repetition. And Degas

painted not the climax of the twirl, but the tenuous moments leading up to it—the revision, the edits, the scrutiny of practice. And he painted it within its own terms.

Upon entering the third floor of the Phillips Collection, which has devoted the entire level to the exhibition, you immediately come upon the ‘Dancers at the Barre’ painting, the two ballerinas stretching side by side in their matching blue practice skirts. On the other walls of the room hang two other studies of the same scene, one nearly identical in composition, and one of the central model posing nude in the same stance.

Throughout the exhibition, the Phillips chose to highlight Degas’ variation and repetition, even exhibiting infrared and x-ray photos of a number of the artist’s paintings to show them in their various stages of completion, exposing the way he moved and positioned his subjects about the canvas as well as their own axis—the adjustment of a leg, the arch of a back, the direction of a subject’s hair.

There is also a large showcase of the connections made to Degas within the ballet in recent years, focused around a video of acclaimed choreographer Christopher Wheeldon’s 2004 production of ‘Swan Lake’ at the Pennsylvania Ballet, which conceived its costumes and sets reminiscent of the nineteenth century Paris Opera as depicted by Degas.

But the crowning achievement of this exhibition is exactly what it should be: the collection of the artist’s works brought together for this stunning exhibit. The beauty and wonder of Degas is heroically and intimately displayed, showcasing his most acclaimed paintings alongside his sketches, prints, charcoal drawings and enticingly tactile sculptures. It is an exhibit that shows us the complete portrait of not just the subjects, but of the artist.

“Conversation in real life is full of half-finished sentences and overlapping talk,” said Degas. “Why shouldn’t painting be too?” This is an exhibit for those of us who want to experience the full conversation, and long to fall into a fierce, satisfying discussion with Degas in his own time.

Talkin’ ‘bout my Generation The Future of Family Businesses

The single overhead light hangs low over the desk, illuminating the dark hair and olive face of Samantha Hays, the representative from the third generation of business men and women in her family.

She has just returned to the shop after spending the morning apple picking with the fourth generation.

“I think I always knew I would end up in the business,” Hays says. “There was a time when I was living in Aspen, and I was skiing and I was really having a great time. I was out there for seven years and I thought, ‘You know, I should get back to reality.’ It’s just such a great business, and such an amazing way to live my life.”

The Phoenix was opened in 1955 by Hays’ grandparents, Betty and Bill Hays, who she continues to draw on for inspiration. The two founded the store with nothing but a station wagon full of folk art brought back from Mexico and a bit of business savvy.

“That tradition of travel and working directly with the artists that we buy from is one of the reasons that I am so passionate about continuing in the business,” Hays says. “We have seen communities grow and thrive through the success of the art that they produce. It is very exciting to be a part of that.”

Hays, who started working in the shop when she was 13, now works with the third generation of artists that her grandparents first discovered, as well as newer international artists and retailers.

“I think that because we have been here for so long, the store has an image as ‘that Mexican store,’ when that’s really not the case anymore,” Hays says. “Our heart will always be in Mexico and that kind of relationship is something that we don’t ever want to lose. But I think that what we’ve tried to do as we move forward is let people know that we have this incredible jewelry and clothing collection that isn’t just from Mexico anymore.”

Although she is the next rising generation in the family business, Hays still works very much in tandem with her parents, who each take on separate responsibilities at the store.

“I am fortunate to have a wonderful relationship with my parents,” Hays says. “We have great communication and are constantly bouncing ideas off of each other about new lines and the mix that we have at the store.”

Hays largely handles the clothes buying for the store, while her parents buy the jewelry and handle the accounting. Recently, Hays has scaled back her duties at the shop to focus more time on her two children, five-year-old Clara and three-year-old Theo, along with three dogs, two cats and a fish pond to round out her brood.

“There’s a constant feeling of having one foot in both places and feeling like you’re not doing either one particularly well,” she says. “But it seems to work out. It’s nice to have a balance between the two.”

Hays says that one added bonus of working in a family business is knowing that someone is always responsible for the store, whether she’s at home with her family or her parents are gone traveling.

Of course, that’s not to say Hays and her parents always agree on things. During the recent

renovations of the store, tension rose around the old peg board on the walls, which her parents thought to be iconic, but Hays thought was no longer functional.

The walls are now painted a clean, fresh white.

Other changes include fresh paint, more functional displays and 30 solar panels that were recently mounted on the roof in keeping with The Phoenix’s message of social consciousness.

The store’s Oct. 15 trunk show and styling event with Eileen Fisher will also be held with a socially conscious theme, as it will support So Others Might Eat, an organization Hays’ grandmother was passionate about.

Hope Solomon, Wedding Creations & Anthony’s Tuxedos ope Solomon is a fast talker in pearl earrings and a leopard-print blouse.

At 27, she has a thriving career on Capitol Hill in emergency preparedness, is a highly active member of the Georgetown Business Association and makes it clear that she will be taking over the family business sometime soon with no intention of giving up her passion for politics. Most people who know her describe her as a firecracker.

“Anyone that’s been raised in a family business will know that it’s very difficult to sort of kick the parents out so that you can take over,” she says between sips of San Pellegrino. “Like

I was talking to Samantha and Karen and we all have the same sort of issues. No matter how much you get your foot in the door, old dad over there, he’ll never retire. I’ve sort of tried to develop my own career while taking over just so I’m keeping busy.”

Five feet away, Ed Solomon, or “old dad over there,” sits working at his desk and doesn’t seem to take offense to this statement.

The Solomon family business, Wedding Creations & Anthony’s Tuxedos, has been open for 34 or 32 years, depending on whether you ask Hope or her father. The business began with Ed and his wife, Gerri, in 1979 when they opened up a boutique providing bridesmaid dress rentals. Eventually, the store moved on from renting to selling bridesmaid dresses and wedding gowns, finally branching into short-notice tuxedo rentals with more than 400 tuxes in stock.

Solomon grew up with the store playing a leading role in her life. Her crib was in the back of the shop, and she spent her days in the store with her dad.

“I’m an only child, so for me this store is like a fourth family member,” she says. “So, no matter where my passions go, this is my number one priority.”

Solomon says that her current schedule is to work her “day job” on the Hill and spend nights and weekends “moonlighting” at the shop. Although this amounts to a practically 24/7 work schedule, she says that she doesn’t recognize being at the store as work because it’s “just something you do.”

The store, which is small and uses “every square inch of space,” according to Ed, gets much of its business from generational customers: families who got their tux or dress there and are now bringing their children in. They refer their friends to the business, and the circle grows. He notes that for as small as their shop is, they rented out 60 tuxedos last weekend.

And the daughter has plans to grow the business further.

“I think the highlight is you have the ability to do whatever you want, whenever you want and however you want,” she says. “It’s very different from having worked in the corporate world where you’re given a direction and then you only have the ability to do that. I like the

creativity and reaching out to other businesses and the teamwork in Georgetown. That’s what I find just great. Being able to walk across the street and say ‘Hey, I need this from you,’ or ‘I’ve got this idea,’ and everyone sort of chips in and helps.”

Solomon has already begun to bring accessories into the store, making it possible for brides and bridesmaids to shop in one stop, and plans to incorporate more event planning into their services once she starts working at Wedding Creations & Anthony’s Tuxedos more full time.

Her idea is to guide brides through Georgetown weddings, highlighting small businesses and the services they offer.

Her goals, however, are not limited to the future of the shop. In her passion for politics she rules nothing out, whether it’s helping others with their platforms or running for a position herself. Her main concerns are for education, as a product of the D.C. school system herself, and the welfare of small businesses. She says that she got her political mind from her father.

“I’m a little Ed,” she says.

aren Ohri, a petite, young blonde, kneels down on the showroom floor of Georgetown Floorcoverings to wipe syrup and pancake crumbs from the face and hands of her 2-year-old son, Jayson.

“I’m ‘ticky,” says Jayson, as his mother gives him a final check before sending him off to play with the carpet samples and few toys lining the walls of the store. Half an hour earlier, he had trailed his mom in to work, announcing to all who would hear that he’d gotten mom to buy him fast food from McDonald’s.

“So, this is a lot of what it’s like,” says Ohri.

“There’s good, and there’s bad. You’re always multitasking, Blackberry going off, child screaming in the background, the whole nine yards. But the nice thing, too, is that now the businesses [The Phoenix, Wedding Creations & Anthony’s Tuxedos and Georgetown Floorcoverings] are more established than when our fathers and grandfathers started them.”

Ohri is a wife and mother of three kids, ages two to 13, and is steadily taking on more responsibilities at Georgetown Floorcoverings, the family business which her grandfather first opened their 1417 28th St. location in 1954.

Now located at 3233 K St. where they’ve been since 1962, the business specializes in commercial flooring in everything from hardwood to linoleum, although they do some work with residential architects and designers.

Like her father before her, Ohri started to work at the shop regularly as a teenager emptying trash cans, but she helped out around the shop since she was five, answering phones, dusting shelves and labeling samples. In 1998, she began working in the store full time.

As a teenager with two siblings, Ohri never thought she’d be the one to take over the family business. Yet when her brother, the most likely candidate, followed his dream of becoming a firefighter and her sister moved to Minnesota to become a teacher, she found herself next in line.

“I’ve always liked it, but in high school I never thought I was going to run the family business.

But as far as my dream job, now it is. I love what I do. And it does allow me some flexibility like bringing this little guy in to work,” she says, patting Jayson who is now slumped against her thigh.

Ohri worked alongside her father, Ronald Swarthout, who is very involved in the business, until last Mother’s Day when Swarthout suffered an aortic aneurism.

“It was the call in the middle of the night you never want to get,” Ohri says. “It was terrifying.”

The family rushed together, her sister flying in from Minnesota that day. Strangely enough, Swarthout had just talked to his doctor about the possibility of an aneurism the day before, prompted by Ohri, whose intuition told her he might be at risk.

“If anything is going to make you get into the ‘what are we going to do in the future’ train of thought, that’ll do it,” Ohri says.

Since then, she has jumped in to take over the payables and many of her father’s other duties.

Although Swarthout made a swift and full recovery, Ohri has kept these responsibilities.

“I don’t know if he’s wanting to [retire], but I’ve kind of just continued doing what I’ve started doing because I feel like it allows him to have a life besides thinking ‘every Thursday I’ve got to cut checks and every Friday I’ve got to mail checks,’ ” Ohri says. “It’s been kind of nice for him, I think. And then he’s been travelling. Right now, he’s in Italy, which is huge. He would’ve never been able to go away like this.”

Inevitably, things have changed about Georgetown Floorcoverings since Ohri’s grandfather first opened up shop. The family no longer lives or holds office upstairs in the “Watch Tower,” and her grandfather’s old organ – which he could and did play – is no longer stored in the back room. Yet aside from bringing the business into the 21st century, Ohri is dedicated to keeping as much the same about the business as possible.

“I’m not changing anything besides updating and enhancing,” Ohri says. “I’m not the bratty daughter coming in to change everything and knock down walls. I don’t really want to go and reinvent the wheel too much because dad’s always been a great businessman.”

Most of the changes Ohri has prompted have been aesthetic.

“This is what it looked like before,” she says, whipping out a picture of a dated showroom which, upon second glance, is an older version

of the room she’s sitting in now. “We had a tikistyle roof for the samples.”

The warm, muted tones that now decorate the space are aimed at making their residential clients feel more at home in the shop and can use the showroom as a functional space. Yet even without making any major changes, Ohri’s family and business keep her constantly busy.

“The first day of my vacation we went to the beach and my phone rang at seven o’clock in the morning, and my husband said, ‘Why do you even leave it on?’ Well, because you have to! It’s a big responsibility, and I take it very seriously because it is my dad’s reputation and the reputation of the business,” Ohri says. “If something goes wrong with a job, I take it very personally because I just have such respect for my grandfather’s legacy and my father’s legacy.

I just want to make sure I keep things going the same way they did,” she says as the youngest member of the next generation plays with stacks of carpet samples, just like his mother remembers doing as a child.

amie Stachowski and his son, Josef, are taking over Griffin Market by Stachowski in Georgetown to open what Jamie calls “a rustic Hansel & Gretel house of beef,” featuring salamis and sausages as well as sandwiches (hand-cut pastrami – I’m there), beef, pork, and more exotic items like duck pate, fois gras, confit; prepared items like turkey for Thanksgiving, short ribs and meatballs. They plan to be up and running by November.

The Capital Hilton at 16th and K Streets, NW, will open its restaurant, North Gate Grill, in November. It will open serving breakfast and lunch, before dinner service is added to the dining program. The name, North Gate Grill, refers to its location down the street from the north gate of the White House. The chef is Daniel Murray, formerly of Renaissance Cleveland. But before that, he worked here in D.C. at Blackie’s.

Ray’s the Steaks and Ray’s Hell Burger owner Michael Landrum has opened the latest restaurant in his Ray’s empire: Ray’s to the Third, selling steak frites 13 different ways. It’s only open for dinner, with plans for lunch service in the future, located at 1650 Wilson Blvd in the Rosslyn/Courthouse area of Arlington.

ChadwiCks – The BesT Burger in georgeTown for 43 years

Food trattoria will open this fall at 3201 New Mexico Ave., NW, in the former Balducci’s space. The restaurant will feature a wood-burning oven for Neapolitan pizza, and outdoor dining, just like at its neighbor, Chef Geoff’s. New York-based Boqueria plans to open in Dupont Circle this fall, their first location outside of New York.

They offer Barcelona-inspired tapas. Filter Coffeehouse plans to open its second location in Foggy Bottom near the World Bank at 19th and I Streets, NW. The plan is for it to be open before year’s end.

EatWell DC who brought us Logan Tavern, grillfish, Commissary and The Heights, will open another Logan Circle eatery, The Pig at 1320 14th Street, NW, featuring – what else?

– pork. They will source foods from their own farm, EatWell Natural Farm in La Plata, Md., and use locally raised pigs. They will also offer craft cocktails, American beers and wines from eco-conscious producers as well as small batch bourbons. A second quarter 2012 opening is planned.

Relying mostly on the money he has made through his technology business, Steve Acup is opening Log Inn at Lucketts at Route 15 and Spinks Ferry Road. Although his plans call for a March 2012 opening, he has set up a mobile trailer with a commercial kitchen to give the neighbors a taste of what to expect at Log Inn. The restaurant will serve pizza, pasta, ribs, Italian beef sandwiches and cheesecakes. Acup is developing the recipes but hiring people to cook and execute the concept for the up to 125-seat restaurant.

Chef Drew Trautmann, formerly of Mendocino Grille & Wine Bar in Georgetown, and Jawad Saadaoui, of Redwood in Bethesda, plan to open District Kitchen this month in the space where Jandara used to be at 2606 Connecticut Ave., NW, in Woodley Park. The 75seat space will offer American food, similar to Woodberry Kitchen (re: rustic) in Baltimore.

Town Hall restaurant, 2218 Wisconsin Ave, NW in Glover Park will be moving a block north into the old Blue Ridge space at 2340 Wisconsin Ave., NW. Eli Hengst and Jared Rager, owners of both places, negotiated a deal that also allows Town Hall to assume Blue Ridge’s liquor license. Their former space now also comes with its own liquor license, a very attractive amenity these days. Town Hall plans to be open in their new space by Thanksgiving.

MURPHY’S LOVE: INTIMACY & RELATIONSHIPS

By Stacy Notaras Murphy Dear Stacy, My husband has lost his job. I have been doling out extra hugs, pats on the back, etc., but he seems annoyed when I do it. Why is he acting this way, when I only want to help?

-Trying to be helpful in NW Dear Helpful, Oh honey, I know you are just trying to be helpful. It makes sense that you think your sympathetic actions would be perceived as such. But it sounds like Husband is translating it differently.

Imagine it from his perspective. Your touchyfeely act is a direct result of him being out of work -– a bright, glowing arrow pointing out the fact that he has let you down. Some people (often men) struggle with shame in the wake of such a situation. Relationship expert and author Steven Stosny describes this as a result of the survival instinct: a male reacts protectively to a female’s fear-based anxiety. Husbands want to defend and support their wives, but when the perceived danger is rooted in something they, themselves, have or haven’t done, they feel like failures and are ashamed. Stosny explains that men respond in a variety of ways that undermine intimacy (turning the aggression back on her, withdrawing, stonewalling, etc.). You being extra kind and lovey simply highlights his shameful experience, and he’s not going to be talked out of that, it’s programmed into his cells.

Instead, make an “appointment” to talk about your family game plan. Let him set the time.

Ask him what might be helpful and be prepared to hear that it would be best not to talk about the situation for a while. He may need the buffer of a few weeks to really regain his footing. Stosny and I both recommend that you work to separate the content of the disagreement (e.g., his job loss) from the context of your relationship.

Identify this fear/shame relationship dynamic as something that is happening to both of you,

and make sure that maintaining your connected relationship is your number-one priority. Leave the résumé editing to him, and help only when asked.

If all this patience seems like more than you can take, find another place to channel your natural/expected/obvious anxiety. Exercise, phone a friend, start a new project for yourself. The point is that in this situation, Husband needs some breathing room. You can give that to him.

Dear Stacy, I am the mother of an adorable four-monthold baby girl and have been married for three years. I know that every marriage struggles when babies become part of the deal, but really our marriage has never been very good.

There’s just not a lot of love between us. We never seem to be able to compromise and always get stuck in arguments that last for days and never end with apologies, we just move on to the next argument. If I’m being honest, we had the baby because my biological clock said it was time, not because either of us really wanted to parent together. On the surface, I think I hoped it would make things better, bring us closer, but part of me also thought it might be just the thing to finally drive us apart.

Looks like the second option happened.

I am walking around in a fog all the time, crying a lot and not because of the hormones.

My friends and family are sick of hearing me talk about this. I find myself feeling numb more and more of the time now. I’m tired of wishing things were different, especially when I see other husbands adore their families – it almost feels like mine hates us. I just don’t know what to do anymore.

-Definitely Divorcing Dear Definitely, I’m sorry to hear that things look so definite.

But since they do, there are some ways you can take care of yourself even as the romantic re-

lationship comes to a close. You have a child together, so you and New Dad will always have some sort of connection. Now is a good time to start to define what that next phase is going to look like. Do yourself a favor and be deliberate about this, or else be willing to accept that the disconnect you feel with New Dad today is likely to follow you into the divorce phase with even more painful results for both you and your daughter.

If New Dad is willing, please revisit couples therapy. Not so that you can remain a couple, but so that you can work on some good communication strategies to help you over the next 18plus years of child-rearing. Make a connection with a good counselor who you can use as a reliable base for future tune-ups. Perhaps you also might consider collaborative divorce as a first step toward pulling the union apart. If it works, you will already have the experience of working together in order to create separate lives, a skill you will inevitably hone in years to come.

I know I seem to say this every month, but every single one of your interactions with New Dad over the next several years is going to be part of the template that your little girl is developing for her own future relationships. Mommy and Daddy fight whenever they drop me off?

That’s how you say goodbye. Mommy and Daddy talk trash behind each other’s backs? That’s how you treat your family. In other words, YOU ARE BEING WATCHED. Try to model civility and compassion whenever you can.

COCKTAIL OF THE WEEK: UP IN SMOKE

W

hat do you get when you cross one of Washington’s most innovative and crafty bar chefs with a New Zealand spirit that prides itself with being offbeat and irreverent? The answer is Gina Chersavani’s Up in Smoke, an award-winning cocktail forged from vodka and marigold topped off with an alluring poof of smoked sugar cotton candy.

This whimsical tipple captures all the fun of an autumn carnival and combines it with sophisticated ambiance of an outdoor performance of Shakespeare in the park.

Chersavani, a self-proclaimed “mixtress” is well known for the fanciful cocktails at PS7, where she presides. The Up in Smoke adds another creative choice to the already-eclectic menu.

This fun concoction was designed for the World Cocktail Cup sponsored by 42 below Vodka. According to Chersavani, the idea of the contest was to be as daring as you want to be.

“The rule rules were, ‘there are no rules’,” she explained.

Her idea of cotton candy cocktail certainly fit the bill. ”It wasn’t so much as using cotton candy, but more of the idea of using it as a vessel,”

Chersavani explained. “It was a way of putting the sugar into a cocktail in a different form.”

After winning the Washington, D.C., round of the competition, Chersavani had to tote her cotton candy-making machine to New York for the U.S. finals. She rode with the contraption on the train and schlepped it around Manhattan on a dolly. While she didn’t advance to the next round of the competition in New Zealand, luckily for Washingtonians, she brought her cocktail back to D.C. where it earned a spot on PS-7’s fall cocktail menu.

While most folks do not have a cotton candy machine lurking in their kitchens, replicating Chersavani’s cocktail is easily achievable task for home bartenders. The drink is enjoyable with or without its fluffy topper.

The base (minus the cotton candy) of the Up In Smoke is a mixture of vodka lemon, honey, bitters and marigold seed. While the latter ingredient may sound exotic, Chersavani says that it’s more common than you think. It can be purchased at Teaism, Whole Foods and health food store. She steeps the marigold as though she were making a pot of herbal tea to create a base liquid. The marigold gives this potable a bright and sunny fresh flavor.

Even though she likes to utilize out of the or-

dinary ingredients, Chersavani prefers to keep the components in her cocktails accessible. She doesn’t like recipes where the ingredients are too difficult or rare to find. “That’s not going to work for most people,” she says.

So, if you are seeking fall festival-style sweet and don’t feel like heading to the suburbs, swing by PS-7 for a decidedly adult twist on one of your childhood treats. Or, if you feel like relaxing at home, you can whip up this cocktail on your own and add a pinch or two of smoked sugar to suit your taste.

Up in Smoke 1.5 oz 42 Below Vodka 1 oz lemon juice 2 oz Marigold Tea or a Teazan of fruit would be a good substitute 2 or 3 dashes Angostura bitters 2 or 3 dashes Gary Reagan bitters

In a shaker 3/4 filled with ice, combine all ingredients, shake until frothy, strain into a small wine glass. Then, top with smoked cotton candy.

The Blessing of the Animals at St. John’s Georgetown Parish on O Street is always a joyous occasion. This year’s event took place on the unusually chilly afternoon of Oct. 2 on the church lawn.

Treasured pets happily greeted their friends from various parks and neighborhood jaunts and seemed to recognize that this was a special occasion to honor St. Francis and his protection. Charles DeSantis’s basset Bella bayed on key throughout the gathering hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful. The event is canine dominant but at east two cats joined in and an unusual addition was Ben Sutherland’s leopard gecko Screech. Pets were individually blessed and received St. Francis medals. Christine Warnke invited media pals to the City Tavern Club to meet actress Charlotte Ross, best known for roles in NYPD Blue and currently Glee. The actress was in Washington to join The Humane Society of the United States in Congressional briefings. The intent is to seek an end to invasive research on chimpanzees and promote passage of the Great Ape Protection and Costs Savings Act of 2011, which has strong bipartisan support in today’s cost-cutting climate. The United States is the only developed country continuing to confine chimpanzees in laboratories where they are frequently not used in active research but spend long solitary lives.
