For UFC women’s champ Miesha Tate, team stability equals strength
W
hen her UFC career began, Miesha Tate often found herself relegated to the role of Ronda Rousey refuter. Rousey, then women’s bantamweight champion, used the cameras and microphones constantly hovering around her to torment Tate with insults and criticism. It was then up to Tate to defend herself, which she typically did. One notable exception came when Rousey attacked Tate’s transient training. Tate was well aware that her sampling of gyms across the West Coast alongside boyfriend, head coach and fellow fighter Bryan Caraway needed to cease. “I was always looking for a place to make a home,” Tate said. “I just couldn’t find the perfect spot.” Tate is finally confident she’s discovered her fighting Valhalla. Coming to Las Vegas and making camp in the Valley’s most famous mixed martial arts gym, Xtreme Couture, has allowed her to transcend a reputation as Rousey rival and nomadic fighter. Tate is now much more than that; she’s the UFC women’s bantamweight champion, the top female fighter in the world. On Saturday, July 9, she’ll look to defend the title in a pay-perview bout against Amanda Nunes at one of the biggest events in MMA history, UFC 200 at T-Mobile Arena. ••••• First and foremost, Tate credits her current five-fight winning streak, peaking with an upset victory over Holly Holm in March, to the local team she built at the culmination of her
journey. “It was a lot of trial and error definitely, but I felt like I learned so much from every place I trained,” Tate says. “It was like test-driving a bunch of cars to find out what you want, so when you make the purchase, you know you’re happy with it.” If Tate’s career is like a car, she always felt like she had the right engine. Caraway motored her into the sport more than a decade ago when they met at Central Washington University. He was immediately struck by the former high school wrestler’s toughness, which shined through in training and particularly in Tate’s first amateur fight. She lost, but that was beside the point. A knee shattered Tate’s nose in the first round, but to Caraway’s astonishment, that only made her fight more desperately. “Guys in the UFC get hit not half as bad as Miesha got hit, and they fall down in the fetal position and quit,” Caraway says. He began dedicating himself as much to her career as his own. The pair achieved monumental success, as Tate won the Strikeforce championship— the top promotion for women’s fighters at the time—in July 2011. The reign was short-lived, however, because the first title defense came against Rousey, who submitted Tate and dislocated her arm with an arm bar. A rematch in the UFC was set a year later, which brought Tate to Las Vegas for an extended period to star on The Ultimate Fighter as a coach alongside Rousey. Filming began right around the time Xtreme Couture hired Robert Follis as its head coach. The gym had
fallen on hard times, losing all of its UFC fighters, after a golden period in the late 2000s when it housed champions like Forrest Griffin and owner and namesake Randy Couture. “The infrastructure and mostly everything was still there,” Follis says. “They just brought me in to create a spark.” Tate and Caraway found a good fit in Follis, and in veteran local striking coach Jimmy Gifford. The only problem? The team may have accelerated too quickly. Tate leapt into full-time local training midway through her preparations for the second match with Rousey. She felt she was receiving invaluable direction, but was also confused by the clutter of voices. On fight night, she fell victim to another arm bar. “We all had to get that synergy and get on the same page with bonding experiences instead of jumping midstride into it all,” Tate says. “We’re so much better now.” The team got its next real test in January 2015. Tate came in as nearly a 2-to-1 underdog to Olympic wrestler Sara McMann, and looked even more helpless than the odds suggested in the first round. McMann knocked her down, breaking her orbital bone in two spots. Then Caraway spoke up. “Bite down on that mouthpiece, put your chin down, come forward and beat this girl up,” Caraway remembers telling her. “F*ck this technical sh*t. You need to fight this girl.” Tate went on to win the next two rounds to pull off a majority-decision victory. More than a year later, Tate found herself in another dire situation
By Case Keefer
against Holm with the title on the line. Down three rounds to one with only the fifth to go, Tate tossed Holm to the ground and pulled off a successful rear-naked choke. “It felt like it was in a movie—it went slow, then reanimated into full life when she got the choke,” Follis says. “It was one of the greatest moments of my life. As far as showing sheer determination and work ethic, I can’t think of anything better.” The victory came with a promise of a Tate-Rousey rematch, though Rousey has delayed her return since losing to Holm last November, citing injuries and other obligations. “Ronda can go retire and never fight again,” Caraway says. “I don’t care, because Miesha beat the girl that broke Ronda. To me, Miesha has nothing to prove.” Still, Caraway concedes he would like to see Tate beat Rousey for everyone who said it would never happen. Since their last fight, Tate has assembled exactly what Rousey once accused her of lacking: a winning team. “The best moment of winning the title for me was coming into the gym on Monday with my belt,” Tate said. “Everyone was really happy for me, proud of me. I was excited not for what people would say to me, but what I could say to the team. I was excited to say, ‘I couldn’t have gotten this without you guys.’”

THE MAIN EVENT: JONES VS. CORMIER The light heavyweights squaring off in the main event of UFC 200, Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, are arguably two of the three best fighters in the world. The 28-year-old Jones has never legitimately lost, with his only defeat a controversial disqualification for illegal elbows in a fight he was dominating. The 37-year-old Cormier’s only career loss was to Jones, by unanimous decision, when the pair met in January 2015. Despite the loss, Cormier assumed the light heavyweight championship belt four months later when the UFC served Jones with an indefinite suspension following a series of incidents capped by a felony hit-and-run arrest. Jones, the top-ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world, gets a chance to win back a title he never lost in the octagon against his arch nemesis at T-Mobile Arena. –Case Keefer

BEST BOUTS UFC 129 (April 30, 2011, Toronto) Witnessing a thenrecord 55,724 people fill the Rogers Centre was a surreal spectacle. There’s never been a louder moment than when national hero Georges St.-Pierre entered the arena ahead of his title defense against Jake Shields.

UFC 196 (March 5, 2016, MGM Grand) It was only appropriate that the UFC’s second-best-selling pay-per-view of all-time came with a reminder of mixed martial arts’ unpredictability. After 3-to-1 underdog Miesha Tate came back with a near buzzer-beating submission win over Holly Holm, 4-to-1 underdog Nate Diaz staggered and submitted Conor McGregor.
1 UFC 189 (July 11, 2015 at MGM Grand)
UFC 116 (July 3, 2010, MGM Grand) I might have witnessed the greatest top-tobottom collection of fights in the very first UFC event I ever covered. The main event featured Brock Lesnar defending his heavyweight title by coming back from a firstround beatdown to submit Shane Carwin— and that might not have even been one of the night’s four best fights.
UFC 165 (September 21, 2013, Toronto) The main event stands as the greatest fight I’ve ever seen in person. Neither Jon Jones nor Alexander Gustafsson could walk after a back-and-forth 25-minute battle; Jones nudged out a slim victory, then both men were transported to the hospital.
The two best things about the UFC are the fights and its live production, and last year’s International Fight Week headlining event showed off both in excess. The final six fights produced dramatic stoppages, and McGregor’s makeover from potential star to matchless megastar with a knockout victory over Chad Mendes was preceded by a chill-inducing live walkout performance from Sinead O’Connor.

efore he was selling out clubs as a solo artist, Steve Angello and his cohorts helped pave the way for big-room EDM as the now-defunct Swedish House Mafia. With this year’s debut solo album, Wild Youth, Angello breaks from now-mainstream EDM by returning to his more housefriendly origins. “I just want to show the kids that it’s okay to do something that follows your heart,” Angello says. “It’s okay to make a seven-minute edit of a song. You don’t have to prove yourself to anybody. You don’t have to be a party pleaser. You’re not a jukebox.”

Harkening to his early influences—he says he grew up listening to The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers and Moby—each starry track on Wild Youth is dancefloorready, locked and loaded to take clubbers on a trip of their own. This weekend’s setting, the gargantuan Omnia Nightclub, only amplifies that elation.
“The production level and the club build is one of a kind,” Angello says of Omnia. “It’s really incredible to play there … I do a lot of production myself when I tour and really understand how hard they work. It allows me to take a step back with the track and go on a little bit of a journey.” There’s no better place to witness the electric dance wizard than here. atalia Harris got an early start. She’s been working in hospitality since she was 19.
“In Arizona, you can [do that],” she says of her beginnings cocktailing at clubs in between study sessions at Arizona State University. “I almost grew up in a nightclub. Anytime people would talk about events, my ears would perk up. I started to volunteer myself if something was going on … and realized how much I liked it. When I moved to Vegas, it was the obvious thing for me to do.”

Harris began her Vegas nightlife journey at Chateau and then the former Haze—now Jewel at Aria— before moving into her current role as director of marketing for Light and Daylight at Mandalay Bay. Here, she’s always working on something new, planning various events and making sure they go off without a hitch, digging into details from picking out props and makeup to costuming and more. If you’ve ever been to Light for
Disclosure’s Wild Life residency, you’ve seen how Harris helps make party dreams a reality. “I get bored really easily. Here, every week is like a whole new challenge … it constantly keeps me engaged, so I love that,” she says. Implementing different but related programming strategies for Light and Daylight, it’s Harris’ job to market each venue on brand while creating campaigns that stand out from the competition. “It’s a very family type of environment … It gives me the opportunity to speak my mind ... we get to be super hands-on with everything that we do, and that’s something that ends up [being] really rewarding.” –Leslie Ventura

or the past two years, summer in Las Vegas has meant more than big crowds and big parties under the sun at Encore Beach Club. Thursday’s wildly popular Encore Beach Club at Night has doubled down on the fun, electrifying the night with EBC’s mega-roster of DJs while utilizing both the beach club and Surrender Nightclub spaces. This season, the Encore team found a way to expand again with a Fridaynight party, which requires a significant strategy and hard work—it adds up to four service shifts in less than 48 hours, a volume no other club venue on the Strip is even attempting.
“The process of turning it over from day to night can be very challenging due to time restraints, especially Friday night to Saturday,” EBC GM Travis Shiraishi says. “It’s definitely all hands on deck.” The staff—which numbers around 150 every day from service staff to engineers—begins prepping for the night party before the day party ends. Just breaking down and setting up the specialized DJ booth requires 25 people. Encore’s cleaning crew executes a deepclean on the 60,000-square-foot venue between each shift, and the service team assists in flipping the 170 “pieces of real estate,” including cabanas and daybeds. “Our demands are high—we host
3,000 to 4,000 guests on a daily basis,” Shiraishi says. “We have to work like a well-tuned orchestra.” This weekend features RL Grime and Flosstradamus at EBC at Night and daytime sets from Grandtheft, Kaskade and Zedd. ndependence Day weekend got a booze-soaked, tunes-filled kickoff at the iconic Rehab pool party on July 1.
American flags were everywhere, from those perched atop each cabana lining the pool to the bikinis sported by Rehab’s sexy servers. Partiers got patriotic, too, with many sporting red, white and blue board shorts and one dude even rocking a sweet star-spangled bandana under his ball cap. And don’t forget the Bomb Pop—Rehab’s cherry Ciroc concoction was an obvi-

That could also be said for the talent. Country mashup master Dee Jay Silver manned the booth and served up the hits, from EDM bangers like Calvin Harris’ “This Is What You Came For” to poppy delights like Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” while working in country favorites contemporary (Sam Hunt’s “House

t’s happened to all of us. You’re having an amazing night in the club when hunger strikes. You don’t want to break up the party to seek sustenance, but serious snackage needs to happen ASAP. This familiar scenario is never a problem at Hyde Bellagio, where those in-the-know realize they can order stunning small plates created by legendary chef Julian Serrano from his Lago restaurant next door. Hyde’s special, stylized lounge menu
includes a selection of Lago’s offerings to match the club’s signature cocktails. Highlights from the chilled portion of the menu include the brilliant scallop capasanta with citrus olive oil, a crudo of Skuna Bay salmon with crispy capers and an enticing plate of imported Ibérico ham with fresh tomato. Warm things up with petite pizzas topped with buffalo ricotta and speck or tomato, mozzarella and basil in the classic margherita style. If you need something a little heartier, beef meatballs slowly braised with tomato are an option. There’s even dessert,
from cannoli to cremino—a chocolate mousse with passion cremeux. Thanks to Lago, nothing stops the party at Hyde. Hyde Bellagio, 702-6938700; Monday, Thursday & Sunday 5 p.m.-midnight, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday, 5 p.m.-4 a.m.

ightclubs and industry professionals across the country have pitched in to assist with recovery in Orlando following the tragedy at Pulse nightclub on June 12. STK, the stylish steakhouse with locations at the Cosmopolitan on the Las Vegas Strip and in Orlando’s Disney Springs, is making it easy and fun for us all to help out. All STK locations are now serving up the Orlando Pride cocktail, a refreshing blend of Tanqueray gin, fresh
lemon juice, egg whites and raspberries, and proceeds from the sale of each drink will benefit victims and their families through the OneOrlando Fund. It’s a beautiful drink with bright, smooth flavor, the perfect complement to a first round of bar bites or appetizers before dinner like crispy lobster with papaya slaw or yellowtail crudo with strawberry and pine nuts. It also has the potential to replace your bubbly or bloody during STK’s Sunday Brunch Club.
STK regulars already get the feels when they’re celebrating at this hot spot; now the Orlando Pride allows you to help others, too. STK at the Cosmopolitan, 702-698-7990; Monday-Thursday 6-11 p.m., Friday & Saturday, 5:30 p.m.-midnight, Sunday 11 a.m.-4 p.m. & 6-11 p.m.

‘GATO GIGANTE’ You’re driving down McLeod when all of a sudden—BAM!—a multi-colored jaguar head pops out from the tract homes and tree-lined sidewalks, just outside the Winchester Cultural Center. It’s the county’s latest public art installation, a work by local artist Miguel Rodriguez made from a giant block of foam with a color scheme and patterns inspired by the centuries-old Huichol style of Mexican folk art. The work, untitled for now (though Rodriguez has taken to calling it “Gato Gigante”), took him four months to complete, using a hot wire bow cutter, knives, sandpaper and other tools. For our interview with the artist, visit lasvegasweekly.com. –Mark Adams (Mikayla Whitmore/Staff)

A long night By Josh Bell hen it was first announced nearly four years ago, HBO’s The Night Of (then titled Criminal Justice, after the British series on which it’s based) was set to star the late James Gandolfini, who filmed a pilot for the show before his death in 2013. After deciding to go ahead without Gandolfini, HBO and creators Steven Zaillian and Richard Price cast Robert De Niro in the lead role of rumpled New York City attorney John Stone, but De Niro quietly dropped out in 2014 due to all-purpose “scheduling conflicts,” and the show that finally premieres on HBO this week stars John Turturro as Stone. Turturro is a less high-profile lead for the show, but his performance as Stone is the best part of the often maddeningly slow and self-serious Night, which follows a single New York City murder case over the course of its eight episodes. Stone, a small-time lawyer who mostly represents lowlevel drug dealers and prostitutes, is in the right

place at the right time to take on the case of Nasir Khan (Riz Ahmed), a Pakistani-American college student accused of murdering a young white heiress in her apartment. Although the show lays out almost every aspect of the story in meticulous and sometimes tediously repetitive detail, it leaves a hole during the first episode right when the murder takes place, so that doubt remains as to whether Khan is guilty. At its heart, then, Night is an incredibly drawnout crime procedural, but creators Zaillian and Price work hard to give it larger resonance. They devote a large amount of time in the later episodes to Khan’s struggles in jail at Rikers Island as he awaits trial, but his increasingly dangerous alliance with a charismatic murderer played by the always appealing Michael K. Williams feels like it belongs in its own separate show, and ends up overshadowing the more nuanced legal drama. The show frequently loses sight of the murder mystery, introducing alternate suspects who then disappear for multiple
episodes. Khan himself is a bit of a cipher, which might be necessary in order to keep the audience guessing as to his guilt, but makes him less interesting to watch as the series progresses. Stone, however, is fascinating, even if the show sometimes spends too much time on overly symbolic details of his life (as a director, Zaillian favors distracting close-ups of pseudo-meaningful objects and background elements). It’s hard to imagine Gandolfini or De Niro more effectively capturing the wry, downtrodden Stone, who has a core of integrity even as he defends a string of scumbags. A show about Stone and his colorful clients, treating them with a mix of humor and respect, could have been a great ongoing HBO series. This drawn-out, plodding miniseries stretches every one of its meager strengths beyond its breaking point.

Marriage of convenience Mike and Dave unevenly mixes humor and heart Basing a movie on a Craigslist ad leaves a lot of room for embellishment, and that’s what happens in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, with both positive and negative results. Inspired by real-life brothers Mike and Dave Stangle, the movie starts out with a version of the brothers’ ad that went viral, which solicited dates for their cousin’s wedding. The movie makes it their sister’s wedding to which Mike (Workaholics’ Adam DeVine) and Dave (Zac Efron) need dates, because they’ve been deemed too reckless to be trusted without chaperones. Everything that follows is entirely fictional, as two equally degenerate friends and roommates, Alice (Anna Kendrick) and Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza), pretend to be demure and accomplished so they can score a free trip to Hawaii to accompany Mike
and Dave to the wedding. What ensues is a mix of tiresome gross-out jokes and slapstick and some surprisingly sensitive character development, especially for Alice, whom Kendrick plays as a wounded but thoughtful woman tentatively allowing herself to trust again. Of course, she does that by, among other things, taking ecstasy and frolicking naked with horses, but at least there’s some genuine emotion behind the ridiculous comedy. That’s more than can be said for Mike and Dave themselves, whose arcs are less convincing. The inconsistent character development fits with the inconsistent humor in a movie that falters as often as it shines. –Josh Bell

In contrast to animated movies like Toy Story or Wreck-It Ralph, which invent entire intricate worlds for the after-hours lives of their characters (toys, video game characters), The Secret Life of Pets doesn’t get all that creative with its vision of what pets do when their human owners aren’t around. Mostly these dogs, cats and other animals sit around socializing, knock over a few household items and eat any food they can find. So it’s a big deal in the life of loyal dog Max (voiced by Louis C.K.) when his beloved owner gets another dog, a big galoot named Duke (Eric Stonestreet) who starts encroaching on Max’s turf. When Max and Duke get lost in New York City, they have to put their differences aside to escape from an evil anti-human underground of former pets led by a deceptively cute bunny named Snowball (Kevin Hart), while their animal friends from neighboring apartments try to track them down. The hyperactive story is good for a few laughs and is entirely kid-friendly, with plenty of cute characters and madcap set pieces (escalating perhaps a little too far, to a climax featuring a massive car chase). Secret Life (from the production company behind the Despicable Me movies) isn’t nearly as sophisticated as something from Pixar or even DreamWorks Animation, but it’s a solid summer time-passer as eager to please as an adorable dog wagging its tail. –Josh Bell

NEW TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD BOTTIGLIA BRINGS TOP-NOTCH ITALIAN BACK TO GREEN VALLEY RANCH RESORT BY BROCK RADKE
+
A favorite neighborhood Italian restaurant has been a major part of Green Valley Ranch Resort since the tony Henderson casino-hotel opened 15 years ago. First, it was Il Fornaio, destination dining for the southeast suburbs. It evolved into the equally
pleasing Terra Verde in 2007, which closed in 2014 to make way for Mexican restaurant Mercadito. But that plan didn’t work out; Mercadito fizzled at Red Rock Resort before it made it to Green Valley. In retrospect, it almost feels like the neighborhood refused to give up its GVR Italian spot. Now it’s Bottiglia—like Red Rock’s Salute trattoria, a partnership between Station Casinos and Clique Hospitality—and like the preceding restaurants in this space, it hits all the right spots.
It’s a bright, pleasant place, full of tile and white, weathered wood, and even tile that looks like white, weathered wood. It’s big but doesn’t feel too big, with a lounge wrapping around the bar and kitchen into a well-appointed main dining room with patio space to spare. The menu is very similar to Salute’s, with an emphasis on seafood and pasta, although subtle, refined details in each dish (and the sparkle of the space) probably make Bottiglia the pick of the two sister restaurants.
