Releasing the Magic

Christina Aguilera presents heady ‘The Xperience’ Zappos Theater at the Planet Hollywood Resort has emerged as the Las Vegas headquarters of myriad female pop superstars. You may remember game-changing residencies from Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez in this venue, and it’s currently home to headlining shows for

10 12.29.19 LasVegasMagazine.com

Gwen Stefani, Shania Twain and, coming in 2020, Kelly Clarkson. But it’s the powerful voice and glamorous style of Christina Aguilera that will ring in the new year at Planet Hollywood, performing two more shows in her continuing production

The Xperience on Dec. 30-31. It’s been a busy month for the 39-year-old singer born on Staten Island, N.Y., as she’s been traveling and touring after a mesmerizing November appearance at the American Music Awards. She opened the month with an X Tour stop in Guadalajara, Mexico, and surprised the audience at the Telmex Auditorium when she brought the legendary Alejandro Fernández onstage to perform their 2013 collaboration “Hoy Tengo Ganas de Ti.” The entirety of 2019 was big for Aguilera. She followed up her triumphant return to touring in 2018 with the Liberation Tour—her first major road trip since 2006—with the European leg of the X Tour, a summer run that followed her debut at Zappos Theater. More recently she’s been celebrating the 20-year anniversary of her debut album, the self-titled smash that included singles “Genie in a Bottle,” “What a Girl Wants” and “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You).” Her teenage breakthrough is an iconic part of that pop music era. “I’ve been working for my whole life, so to reflect on that time and to be here now and as a woman, so sure of myself—and now I have kids who can watch at home—it’s really exciting,” Aguilera said on the AMA red carpet last month. She’s been just as sure of herself in creating her Vegas show and performing on the Strip. Just days after her opening in June, she sat in Zappos Theater and described the process of creating a massive musical production. “Coming here, it can be a little intimidating, even coming from the airport and seeing all the billboards,” Aguilera told me. “There are so many shows and you’re like, ‘Wow, this is a spot to be reckoned with,’ and you get excited but also nervous. But as a performer, I think the nerves are to be embraced. It’s part of the adrenaline rush, the drive that you need to put on a great show,. “If anything, it’s an honor, because you’re in awesome company and there are special people here who are just so successful and have endured amazing careers and are still killing it” she continued. “And to be surrounded by so many kickass females. Even this house has had these don’t-mess-with-us women and we know how to give a show, to put it on and release the magic. It’s my turn to bring what I have to offer to the table and it’s a beautiful feeling to know there’s so much great energy here.”

Around the Strip Brock Radke is an award-winning entertainment reporter who has been covering the city since 2000.

ANY WAY YOU WANT IT Like Aerosmith and Def Leppard have done this year in different venues on the Las Vegas Strip, Journey smashes its massive arena rock show into a much more intimate venue, refusing to tone down the volume or theatrics, for a blowout new headlining residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Founding member Neal Schon takes every opportunity to unleash

extended, squealing guitar solos. Drummer Steve Smith gets plenty of time for a booming solo of his own. Key songwriter Jonathan Cain gets to tell the tales behind the tunes and show off his keyboard skills, and Arnel Pineda, who famously became Journey’s vocalist 12 years ago, shines on classic ballads like “Open Arms” and “Faithfully.” The residency returns Dec. 30-31.

MUST-SEE Human Nature Toby Allen, Phil Burton and Andrew and Mike Tierney are wrapping up a hectic holiday season that saw them travel to Australia to perform a series of Christmas shows after being inducted into their home country’s Aria Hall of Fame, switch up their Las Vegas Strip headlining gig into a festive holiday show and, in their rare offstage moments, celebrate an incredible 30 years together as a group. Human Nature’s accomplishments put them in a rare category and their talent, versatility and musical connectivity are on display five nights a week at 7:30 p.m. during their fastpaced, hit-packed Motown and More show in The Venetian’s Sands Showroom. If you crave the classics performed by true professionals, this is the revue for you.

Elvis Presley’s Heartbreak Hotel in Concert had a very special guest in the audience at Harrah’s recently. Sally Wilbourn, assistant to Sun Records founder and producer Sam Phillips, caught the show and spent some time afterwards with cast members Geno Henderson, Matt Codina, Fana Hughes, Cole Maxwell and Bill Morey. Wilbourn started working at Sun Records in 1955 and was present for recording sessions by several music legends, including the famed “Million Dollar Quartet” sessions with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash. Hometown sports hero Bryce Harper dined at Tao at The Venetian, joining friends for a feast of sushi and signature dishes, while actress and model Rachel McCord dined at the NoMad Restaurant at Park MGM with husband Rick Schirmer and friends, enjoying white truffle tagliatelle and baked Alaska. Plenty of entertainers turned out for the grand opening of Icebar at The Linq Promenade, a new venue from the creators of the Minus5 Ice Experience. Among the party people: hypnotist Steve Falcon, magician Hans Klok, comic performer Tape Face, Piff the Magic Dragon and cast members from Friends! The Musical Parody, Marriage Can Be Murder, Potted Potter, WOW, “X” Burlesque and The Miss Behave Gameshow. Illusionist and endurance artist David Blaine visited Absinthe at Caesars Palace over the holiday season. The influential street magician took in the 10 p.m. performance and went backstage after the show for a photo and to mingle with cast members.

Best of Both Worlds

Embrace indoor-outdoor living with loft-style penthouse You may think you need to hit a multimillion-dollar jackpot to be able to afford a two-story luxury penthouse in Las Vegas, but Juhl Penthouse 1406 in downtown Las Vegas offers you upscale living without breaking seven figures. Floor-to-ceiling windows and a spacious balcony let you take in the cityscape and those fabulous desert sunsets in this loft-style penthouse. These massive windows span both floors for a total of 21 feet in height in the dining and living areas. The open concept kitchen flows into the downstairs living area, making this the ideal space for entertaining. Modern finishes like white quartz countertops, Grohe fixtures and industrial hardware give an up-to-date feel, while sleek chocolate cabinets provide a balancing warmth.

Embrace indoor-outdoor living in a city that calls for terrace parties on warm summer nights that last for easily half the year. The airy open concept is highlighted by light-colored wood plank porcelain tile floors, which flow throughout the residence. While Juhl’s penthouse exudes openness in the common areas, the bedrooms are restful retreats with custom blackout window treatments. The property includes two bedrooms and two and a half baths plus environmentally-friendly features like Nest Smart Thermostats and low-emission window glass. The master suite features plenty of room for a sitting area, a spacious walk-in closet with ample storage features and a luxurious soaking tub.

Also upstairs is a second bedroom with its own walk-in closet, a den and flexible loft space ideal for an office or media room. This 1,944-square-foot residence offers the size of a single-family home with the unbeatable amenities of condominium life. Juhl features retail including a health food restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, a speakeasy, a co-op working lounge and even a CrossFit gym. Outdoors, there’s a resort-style pool with cabanas and nearby grilling area, a 10th floor deck with Strip views and even an outdoor movie theater. If you’re looking to make the move to Las Vegas, this penthouse is a sure bet. –Allison Duck 353 Bonneville Ave., $892,900. 702.816.5466

More With Less Tiny houses aren’t the only homes where residents should maximize space. The shift toward a less-is-more mentality is continuing on into 2020 as home buyers seek to increase space and decrease clutter via both multi-purpose furnishings and design elements. Features like modernized Murphy beds that can be tucked away and furniture including storage benches can bring multi-functional spaces to life with minimal effort. A playroom by day can become an entertaining space with just a bit of creative cabinetry. –AD

Trending Tile Hardwood floors were once the coveted amenity in a home. While hardwoods are still beautiful, modern builders and renovators are opting for tile, including tile that looks like hardwoods. Get the beauty without the fuss. Wood plank tile floors are durable, easier to clean and maintain, plus dog owners no longer have to worry about scratches from Fido. Ideal for the hot Vegas temperatures that can dry out and crack wood, tile is the less-stress flooring option you need to consider. –AD

EXPERT LOOK

Uri Vaknin “Real estate has been in my blood,” says Uri Vaknin, owner and investor of a condominium portfolio in Las Vegas, and partner in private equity firm KRE Capital. “I grew up in real estate. My uncle was a property owner and developer … and when I was a kid, I used to spend the summers helping him out.” After years in real estate on the East Coast, Vaknin brought his talents to Las Vegas to work with high-rise condos in the KRE Capital portfolio, including The Ogden and Juhl in Downtown Las Vegas and One Las Vegas on the south Strip. One amenity Vaknin cannot stress enough is the swimming pool. “In Las Vegas, the pool is your second living room,” he said. “When people look to buy a condo in Las Vegas, they want a fabulous pool. The first thing we did when we bought these buildings was really enhance the pool. At One Las Vegas, the whole concept was an oasis in the desert.” With resort-style amenities like that, Vaknin shrewdly points out now is the time to buy because, “Compared to other major markets like California and New York, we are still an unbelievable value. You can buy a giant three-bedroom condo for what you would pay for a studio or one-bedroom in any of those markets.” –Allison Duck

A Masterpiece of Art and Excitement “O” by Cirque du Soleil has been a staple of the Bellagio (702.693.8866) for more than two decades, yet remains as timeless as ever. The show is easy to differentiate from other Cirque productions, thanks to the 1.5 million-gallon pool of water that serves as the centerpiece of the stage. It allows high divers and synchronized swimmers to add new ele-

ments to the familiar acrobats, aerialists and contortionists synonymous with the Montreal circus production. “O” is a colorful presentation that challenges its audience with surrealism and a dreamlike narrative. Touches of romance are balanced with moments of loss, longing and even brief references to death. Yet the

show is also funny, playful and incredibly busy. Background characters drop in and out frequently—sometimes literally—often with distinctive, unexplained costumes and personas. Is it a fantasy? Or the afterlife? It’s never revealed. But the show is definitely art, using stage performers instead of paint on a canvas. –Robert Kachelriess

Paradise Found Long before it was cool for major pop and rock stars to establish Las Vegas residencies, David Lee Roth attempted his own Las Vegas production. The onetime Van Halen frontman mounted a lounge-style Vegas residency in 1995, nearly a decade before Celine Dion revolutionized headliner entertainment on the Strip, but audiences failed to show up. Now, however, rockers from John Fogerty to Def Leppard have been enjoying success in Vegas, and the time is right for Roth’s return. He’s launching his new show, David Lee Roth Rocks Vegas, at the House of Blues. Roth’s show is set to feature classic songs from his days fronting iconic rockers Van Halen (including “Jump” and “Panama”), as well as songs from his solo career (like “Just a Gigolo” and “Just Like Paradise”) and select covers, along with Roth’s trademark flamboyant stage presence, quirky banter and exuberant dance moves. “A weekend with me is interactive way beyond just music,” Roth said in the show’s announcement, and he has the dedication and the energy to live up to that promise. –Josh Bell

Sky Is the Limit Start the Year With Laughs With the stress of the holiday season behind us, there’s no better way to celebrate than with an evening of laughter. And at the Plaza, January begins with a bang, thanks to funnyman Tim Meadows, who gained nationwide fame as The Ladies Man on Saturday Night Live. After a string of theatrical films (like Mean Girls and Walk Hard), the Michigan native has returned to sitcoms on the small screen. He’s currently doing double duty for

ABC with The Goldbergs and its companion show Schooled. And most recently, he’s been hitting the late-night talk show circuit, pondering how The Ladies Man might function in today’s #MeToo climate. The improv and stand-up star takes the Plaza stage for a trio of performances. With his celebrity impersonations, hilarious characters and good-natured pokes at friends and family life, Meadows offers a great start to the New Year. –Sam Novak

The High Roller observation wheel has evolved into one of the most treasured attractions along the Las Vegas Strip, but it made a major impact even before its first revolution—by forever changing the iconic Strip skyline. At 550 feet, it’s the tallest such wheel in the world. Still on Top Thanks to alt-rock radio hits like “SemiCharmed Life,” “Jumper” and “How’s It Going to Be,” Third Eye Blind will always be a staple of ’90s compilations and period-piece soundtracks, but even though the band hasn’t had a major hit in decades, its audience has grown far beyond fans who are nostalgic for their youth. While other ’90s alt-rockers are relegated to throwback package tours, Third Eye Blind is still a headlining draw, enough to score a coveted New Year’s Eve show in Las Vegas. Even the band’s newer music (2019’s Screamer) is commercially successful

and critically acclaimed: Pitchfork called Screamer “a record so improbably infectious that you almost begin to wonder if (they) might score that late-career radio hit after all.” Frontman Stephan Jenkins has pushed Third Eye Blind to remain ambitious, through changing tastes in popular music. “It’s kind of a mystery to me,” Jenkins told Rolling Stone earlier this year, about the band’s continued popularity. “I think our audience is very young, and they take our music and they make it part of their playlists now. And they make it their present tense.” –Josh Bell

“I was terrified when my doctor told me that I had a unique and interesting personality trait …” the energetic Doug Stanhope says, laying the trap for his audience. He continues, “But then he told me about new Zoloft or Prozac and now I just take three pills a day and I blend right into this horrible inbred corporate landscape.” Stanhope has always raged against the machine, which is why he might not be a household name, but he is a comedian that other comics love. The Bisbee, Ariz.-based funnyman isn’t afraid to tackle any subject. Las Vegas considers Stanhope, 52, something of a hometown hero, as the comic spent much of his developmental phase grinding it out at local mics. His work ethic could be seen back in his Sin City days and is easily one of his best traits. Dive Into ’20

Catching pop legend is the only resolution you need For those of us who had Forever Your Girl posters, who memorized the rap interlude in “Cold Hearted,” who wore our hair in half-up high ponytails … Paula Abdul’s arrival in Las Vegas was going to be gold no matter what. But no one could have dreamed the pop force would do a Wonder Woman dive off a platform in a jewel-encrusted bodysuit. That stunning moment is one of many in Abdul’s residency, which opened at Flamingo in October. The 57-year-old still attacks the dancefloor, weaving her hits with personal stories and comedy bits featuring cartoon sidekick Skat Kat (from 1989’s famed “Opposites Attract” video).

You’ll hear about recording songs in her producer’s shower, and being the lovable judge on American Idol. After three decades in the spotlight, she wants fans to feel even closer. Favorite tracks like “Vibeology” and “Straight Up” are performed in the most Paula way, with Abdul leading a pack of dancers. She was known for her choreography before taking over the charts, and the visual honors that monster talent. It’s hard to imagine her struggling, but the show is built around Abdul’s fight for every stage of her stardom—from leading the Laker Girls to choreographing industry-pushing dance for the likes of Janet Jackson and George Michael,

to becoming a recording artist who remains in the top 10 among Billboard’s All Time Top 200 Albums by Women. She also delves into what it took to recover from severe trauma to her spine, both physically and emotionally. As much as this production is a victory lap for Abdul, it reveals how deep she dug to earn it. On opening night she reportedly said: “… even though I was never the obvious choice, that didn’t stop me from manifesting my dreams.” Watching the Grammy winner work for a mere 60 seconds, it seems pretty obvious. –Erin Ryan Flamingo, 8 p.m. Dec. 31, Jan 1 & 3-4, starting at $69 plus tax and fee. 702.777.2782

Saving His Love Jack Russell didn’t just embrace the rock ’n’ roll lifestyle, he embodied it. So much so that the longtime frontman came close to adding his name to the tragically long list of rock ’n’ roll cautionary tales. It took two comas and a stern warning from his doctor—“If you drink again, you will die”—for Russell to slam the brakes on his excessive ways and begin traveling the road to recovery. Now more than four years sober, Russell is making the most of his second lease on life by doing what he’s always done best: entertaining fans with the powerhouse voice he honed as lead singer of Great White, the band he co-founded in the late 1970s. A 2011 legal settlement resulted in the group splintering into two versions, with Russell carrying on as Jack Russell’s Great White, a five-piece unit that tours the nation performing such bluesy, fist-raising anthems as “Once Bitten, Twice Shy.” While each concert offers Great White fans the opportunity to sing along to the soundtrack of their youth, they offer Russell something much more profound: the chance to bask in the preciousness of life, one high note at a time. –Matt Jacob

Hot Mess

With openings ranging from South Korea— where he was awarded a Michelin star for DOSA—to Singapore and Dubai to Dallas, celebrity chef Akira Back has cultivated a worldwide empire. But one mustn’t forget he got his start right here on the Las Vegas Strip. Vegas is lucky enough to have a pair of Back’s venues: Yellowtail, his first restaurant at Bellagio, and Mandalay Bay’s Kumi. Both are sushi-centric, although the latter, situated off the promenade leading to Mandalay Bay Convention Center, presents more modern Japanese fare than its older brethren. While at Kumi, sip on a Green Geisha while gazing at both the menu and passersby. The cocktail skillfully melds a variety of Asian-inspired ingredients in a well-balanced libation including Bombay Sapphire East Gin hinting of Thai lemongrass and Vietnamese black peppercorns, Thai basil and togarashi syrup. Much like the restaurant itself, it presents a twist on otherwise traditional Asian fare. Kumi’s menu is rooted in traditional Japanese cuisine and a pair of mainstays do nothing to disappoint. Yellowtail serrano delivers a mixture of sweet and heat, the simple Japanese amberjack adorned with spicy serrano slices and wading in a citric yuzu soy. And miso black cod garnished with blistered shishitos is both sweet and savory, the presentation tweaked with the use of yuja (Korean for yuzu) miso. Speaking of classics, no matter which Back restaurant you visit you’ll encounter a signa-

ture item of his: the tuna pizza. The miniature pie layered with tuna sashimi gets a bit of umami from a drizzle of white truffle oil, while micro shiso delivers a textural contrast. And while the salmon tiradito might not be on all of his menus, it’s so comforting it might need to be. With charred peach adding hints of smoky sweetness, this dish is worth seeking out. If you don’t want to subsist on seafood alone, savory pork belly bao buns adorned with pickled cucumbers offer a reprieve to those in search of red meat, the tart vegetables providing a foil to the fatty swine. And Kobe short ribs resting atop teriyaki-glazed cabbage make for a finger-licking worthy offering.

Sushi rolls give the kitchen an opportunity to be fanciful. The Hot Mess lives up to its billing; while not the most composed roll, it nonetheless creates a spectacle. The combination of poke, kanikama—better known as krab—and avocado has Screaming O sauce poured upon it tableside. The sauce, including sriracha and kewpie mayo, delivers more than its share of heat, resulting in a gloriously delicious mess. Equally as unorthodox is the Pop Rockin roll, combining spicy tuna, salmon and kanikama with an unlikely ingredient: watermelon Pop Rocks. The addition of the childhood candy to the roll hardly contributes any sweetness; instead, it delivers the electric mouthfeel the candy is known for, bursting with every bite. While the Pop Rockin roll might involve a candy treat, your real dessert is the transcendent strawberry soufflé. While soufflé at a Japanese restaurant might come as a surprise, the ethereal baked egg dish tucked with vanilla bean ice cream and chocolate ganache is a welcome finale to an unsurprisingly delicious meal.

Ana Garcia

Meet your party enforcer When model cocktail server Ana Garcia isn’t turning on the charm and working hard to make sure her guests have a memorable time at Hakkasan nightclub at MGM Grand, she’s a renaissance woman of sorts. Garcia recently applied to UNLV’s nursing program. She is relearning how to play the violin (“I’m relearning how to read the music but my fingers still know what to do,” she says.). She’s an avid painter and drawer. She’s taking salsa-dancing lessons. She loves running. She’s a huge animal lover, currently volunteering her time at The Animal Foundation (“I love, love, love all animals—dogs, cats, donkeys, goats, I love all of them!”). Garcia also loves her job. She joined Hakkasan a couple years ago, and before that she was a model cocktail server for some of Vegas’

other big nightclubs and dayclubs. But it’s Hakkasan that really impresses her. “When you think of Las Vegas and you think of nightclubs, you think of Hakkasan,” says the L.A.-raised beauty. “It’s the staple. It’s the club.” While she’s pouring drinks for her guests at the VIP tables, some of the most world-renowned DJs are performing for the massive crowds. “I’ve seen all my favorite DJs here, including Tiësto, my favorite,” she says. But Garcia’s main focus is always her guests. “I’m the party enforcer,” she likes to say. “I’m making sure my guests are being served, taken care of. I’m pouring the shots. And, even though I’m not drinking, I’m still part of the fun, part of the group. Hakkasan, it’s definitely a fun atmosphere—it’s the place you want to go to party and to work.” –Kiko Miyasato

Go big or go home! And one way to go big is by purchasing this VIP Bottle Service package that not only gets you a VIP table—a perfect spot for lounging with your friends when you’re not on the dancefloor sweating it out—but along with mixers like fresh fruit juices, you get one bottle of Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Brut champagne, one bottle of Avion 44 tequila and one bottle of Absolut Elyx vodka. Catch some big names at Hakkasan during the New Year’s Eve festivities: DMX (Dec. 29), Tiësto (Dec. 30 & Jan. 9) and Steve Aoki (Dec. 31). –KM

A Stellar Selection

Whatever you crave, Aria’s got it Aria (3730 Las Vegas Blvd. S., 702.590.7111) has always offered one of the most dynamic dining lineups on the Strip, but after a decade of evolution, the flavors and flair at this modern resort are more magnetic than ever before. It all starts upstairs with a refined trio of restaurants creating a delicious dilemma of a decision. There’s New York City’s celebrated Italian restaurant Carbone; Bardot Brasserie, a classic French favorite from chef Michael Mina; and

Jean Georges Steakhouse, one of the city’s most innovative beef emporiums. Just off Aria’s lobby lies another threesome of wonderful options: Spanish fun at Julian Serrano tapas, soulful American cuisine at Sage and sushi and other Asian-influenced dishes in the see-andbe-seen environment of Catch. With additional casual options like Five50 Pizza Bar, the Buffet and the Patisserie, Aria’s restaurant roster truly offers something for every taste. –Brock Radke

Americana (2620 Regatta Drive Suite 118, 702.331.5565) is a real treat, featuring a lakeside setting and an inventive chef/owner—Stephen Blandino, a veteran of several Strip restaurants. Not only will you get refined American fare, you’ll be able to experience several tableside flambé preparations for items like Steak Diane and bananas Foster. Recently, Blandino held a class showing how to flambé those items at home. Similar classes are held about once a month with very reasonable pricing, and the whole staff joins in, creating a friendly, intimate atmosphere for guests. –Nina King

#trending Looking for a prime meetup spot in the heart of the action to catch up with your party crew? Sake Rok (The Park, 702.706.0858), sandwiched between T-Mobile Arena, Park MGM and New York-New York, is stocked with fantastic food. Inspired by Japanese pop culture, this sleek destination gets a little clubby at night. Fire up the fun with a round of sake bombs and the Godzilla platter piled high with sushi favorites. Don’t skip the crispy honeycomb pork belly with foie gras and black pepper soy. –BR

New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas is ladies’ night in more ways than one this year, with Lizzo, Christina Aguilera and Paula Abdul dominating the shortlist of headliners scheduled to be onstage as the clock counts down to midnight on the Strip. One performer stands head and shoulders above them all—and not because she’s wearing her 16-inch heels. Lady Gaga encapsulated the pop-culture zeitgeist of the past 10 years like no other contemporary superstar, and the next three dates of her Enigma and Jazz & Piano shows provides an optimal opportunity for her to pull out all the stops. The first performance falls on the date of the inaugural anniversary of Enigma, the full-blown concert version of her dual-edged residency at Park Theater inside Park MGM. She had wrapped production on A Star Is Born, but the world had yet to see her making chemistry with Bradley Cooper on the silver screen and was largely unaware of the Haus Laboratories cruelty-free cosmetics line she was developing. Now her Little Monster superfans can show up at her anniversary show inspired by her look for the L.A. premiere of the blockbuster movie with the aid of liquid shimmer powder, lip liner and lip gloss from Gaga’s Haus of

Continue to be merry with cocktails that celebrate the season The winter months call for smooth, rich cocktails that mix together sweet and savory ingredients. Bold, full-bodied recipes that warm the body. Many bars, lounges and restaurants recently released their winter cocktail menus and here we’ve (gladly) done the research, offering up seven delicious, seasonal options sure to bring you good cheer.

38 12.29.19 LasVegasMagazine.com

Chocolate & Bourbon

(Chart House at Golden Nugget) By adding in the chocolate, this winter whiskey cocktail becomes more approachable. The Chocolate & Bourbon cocktail is a blend of Four Roses Small Batch bourbon, Carpano Antica, Tiramisu liqueur and Fee Brothers Aztec chocolate bitters.

Photography by CHRISTOPHER DEVARGAS

Rose Red

(The Dorsey at The Venetian) Winter flavors come together for this twist on the classic Airmail. The Rose Red is a blend of Laird’s Apple Brandy, lime juice, honey and dashes of rose water and topped off with champagne and a red rose garnish.

Oaxaca Egg Nog

(Mama Rabbit at Park MGM) A twist on the classic holiday drink, the Oaxaca Egg Nog utilizes ingredients found in Mexican cuisine. It’s a mix of reposado mezcal, Fortaleza reposado tequila, coconut milk, egg, Oaxacan old-fashioned syrup made with cacao, cinnamon and chili, a pinch of volcanic salt and grated nutmeg and cinnamon for garnish.

The Dirty Snowball

(Beer Park at Paris) Sure to warm you on crisp winter mornings, The Dirty Snowball is a mix of Baileys Irish Cream, Skrewball peanut butter whiskey and fresh coffee and topped off with whipped cream.

40 12.22.19 LasVegasMagazine.com

Merry Martini

(The D and Golden Gate) Inspired by Christmas cookies and candy canes, the Merry Martini is a mix of Skyy Infusions Vanilla Bean vodka, white crème de cacao, Rumple Minze peppermint schnapps and cream and a cherry garnish and sugar rim.

Nog ‘n Beam

(Steak ‘n Shake at OYO Hotel & Casino) Bourbon serves as a spirit of choice for the winter months. Combine that with traditional eggnog and you’ve got the adult milkshake, Nog ‘n Beam. It’s a blend of Jim Beam, RumChata, eggnog syrup, vanilla ice cream, ground cinnamon, whipped cream, mint sprig and a cherry.

Fireside Crème

(Trago Lounge at Tropicana) Inspired by the Brandy Alexander, the Fireside Crème has a lush flavor profile and gets its kick from Remy Martin V cognac mixed with Ambros banana whiskey, Baileys Irish Cream, dark crème de cacao and half & half with a cinnamon and nutmeg rim and swirls of caramel syrup.

Enter the Adventure KÀ (MGM Grand, 702.531.3826) is a story of adventure and conflict, but the real battle is against gravity. Cirque du Soleil’s ambitious production at the MGM Grand unfolds almost entirely on a levitating stage that tilts, turns and, at times, stands vertically upright. The plot is more structured and defined than in most Cirque shows—a dual tale of separated twins under attack and on the run among an

unidentified but colorful cultural backdrop. The story isn’t always easy to follow, but it’s really just an excuse to journey to a variety of visually intriguing environments. Sometimes you’re at the bottom of the sea or in between giant blades of grass. Other dramatic effects include a simulated shipwreck and a bat-like flying machine. In the middle of all this, you’ll see flaming arrows, fireworks and shadow puppets.

The costumes are remarkable (even by Cirque standards), ranging from jungle warriors to jumbo-sized beach creatures, including a crab, turtle and starfish. Like all great Cirque shows, there’s excitement, comedy and even a touch of romance. The tone is sometimes ominous, but always engaging. Don’t worry about the narrative too much. Just let go and enjoy the spectacle. –Rob Kachelriess
