ON THE SCENE WITH BROCK RADKE
Lawrence Gowan Styx member sees the band’s appeal constantly growing
The last time Styx visited Las Vegas, the 50-year-old rock outfit was playing its latest album, The Mission, live in its entirety for the first time ever. The band returns to that same venue, the Pearl Theater at the Palms, to kick off 2020 on Jan. 19, but this concert spectacular will be the full Styx experience, encompassing hits and deep-cut favorites from its long and epic existence. I caught up with Lawrence Gowan—who plays piano, Hammond organ and synthesizers, as well as contributing vocals to the classic Styx sound—to discuss the ongoing popularity of The Mission, the band’s love of Las Vegas and the music’s appeal for a broader audience. Do you and the other members of the band feel like The Mission has taken its place as a classic Styx album? The new measuring stick we see for that is on various online forums for the Styx faithful, and many of those have placed The Mission in the top five Styx albums all time, so that’s great to see. Ultimate Classic Rock rated it number seven of all Styx albums, which is not bad for a band that’s been around so long and has 21 albums. It’s a great testament to the longevity of the band that we’re still able to do a record like this, that the band itself as an entity has thrived to a degree that we can make a record of this caliber and do it in the analog tradition of great Styx albums of the past. I’m sure the record is taking up a bigger chunk of the setlist these days, too. It does. When it first came out we did one or two songs per night, but now after “Overture” and “Gone Gone Gone” it’s straight into “Blue Collar Man” … and then back to “Radio Silence,” which became a favorite pretty early on. Styx returns to Las Vegas during a time when classic rock residencies are all the
10 1.12.20 LasVegasMagazine.com
rage. Could there be such a residency in the band’s future? Of course it’s a possibility. The two we did with Don Felder were great. We could continue to forge some plans in that direction because we really enjoy it, and I think it’s all part of the fact that live music has become as wonderful as all or any new technology and because Las Vegas has become the mecca of showbiz on the planet, really. It’s such a vital place to showcase what you can do live and people come in from all around the world; night after night it’s a new audience. And I’m glad to see all these bands we’ve toured with in the past who are like-minded. Can you elaborate on the ways technology has changed live performance? The digital world we now live in forces us to question our manner of doing things. That’s been one of the greatest things to tap into live music and explore what digital technologies have brought and enhanced in so many ways, from lighting and sound to the way we can deliver in-ear monitoring. We can hear ourselves better than ever. And we can sculpt the show in so many more creative ways because the production is really enhanced in this age.
How has technology impacted classic rock specifically? The greatest phenomenon for bands of our era is younger people have discovered the music. That’s been the most wonderful surprise in our lives is just how much classic rock has really affected the last half of the 20th century, so far from being forgotten. You can instantly access and educate
yourself about that era of music through the Internet and that brought more younger fans. I just saw Elton John a few weeks ago and I felt like the oldest guy in the audience. Everyone in my section was half my age, and that happens sometimes at Styx shows. Younger people have embraced this music and made it their own.

Around the Strip Brock Radke is an award-winning entertainment reporter who has been covering the city since 2000.
HOT AND COOL There have always been plenty of shows that put the sin in Sin City, sexy cabaret and burlesque-inspired productions that amp up the edgy side of entertainment on the Las Vegas Strip. But no other show in this genre adds the depth and dimension that Zumanity does at New YorkNew York, splashing acrobatics, music and comedy into a sultry mix and achieving true artistry.
Each piece of Cirque du Soleil’s steamiest production is different and certain scenes can easily compete for the unofficial title of the Strip’s hottest moments. But there’s much more, so many awe-inspiring elements that explain why it’s a perennial favorite. Zumanity probably hasn’t received its due for being one of the most provocative and influential productions ever to hit the Strip.
MUST-SEE Dionne Warwick The unmistakable voice of Dionne Warwick found a new home in Las Vegas last year when the Grammy-winning artist settled in at the intimate Cleopatra’s Barge at Caesars Palace. Warwick returns this week, continuing her celebration of more than 50 years in music and riding a resurgence after last year’s Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and first studio album in five years, She’s Back. In this classic showroom space, Warwick’s many hits, velvety voice and smooth style will transport you to a different era, and her timeless blend of pop, gospel and R&B sounds will remind you how music brings people together in such a unique way.

Just before it opened on New Year’s Eve at Bellagio, The Mayfair Supper Club hosted Lady Gaga and a large group of friends and performers from her residency production at Park MGM for a sneak peek of the food and entertainment offerings at the new night spot. Onstage at her Enigma show at Park Theater the following night, Gaga once again teased a possible extension of her Vegas headlining residency. Of course Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry was at MGM Grand for the opening of his wife’s International Smoke restaurant; the wood-fired cuisine concept was born in California as a collaboration between Ayesha Curry and chef Michael Mina. The group was also joined by Drake, who performed at XS Nightclub later that night. Actor Taye Diggs attended hit comedy Opium at The Cosmopolitan during a night out in Vegas and went backstage after the show to pose for photos. Plenty of entertainers turned out for the grand opening of Icebar at the Linq Promenade. Among the party people: Steve Falcon, Hans Klok, Tape Face, Piff the Magic Dragon and cast members from Friends! The Musical Parody, Marriage Can Be Murder, WOW, “X” Burlesque and The Miss Behave Gameshow. Legendary Las Vegas headliner Frank Marino (Divas Las Vegas, An Evening at La Cage) announced that his guest-starring gig as Joan Rivers in Legends in Concert at the Tropicana will continue indefinitely. Marino originally started performing in the celebrity impersonation spectacle in September with plans for a two-month run, which was extended. He brings Joan back to the show in February.

Zane Weber Zane Weber is one of those true Las Vegas rarities; he was actually born and raised here. Weber’s insider knowledge of the area makes him uniquely qualified for his job as a Realtor, and he explains, “I used to be in the nightclub industry, so I have a good relationship with people who used to visit town and are now getting into the real estate market here.” When asked what makes the Las Vegas market unique, Weber notes, “Las Vegas itself. It’s a 24-hour town. We have so many different types of private schools, we have the amenities, the entertainment and we have some of the best world-class food.” Weber advises people to capitalize on the current interest rates to get the most for their real estate dollars. He notes, “I think it’s a good buyer’s market right now, especially with the interest rates. The average person can afford more.” Weber’s pro tip is encouraging prospective buyers to explore the area and do in-person research. “If you’re looking to not just invest and you want to live here, you need to come out and get an idea of the areas. Don’t go off of what you buddy’s aunt says about Henderson; come out and look for yourself.” –Allison Duck

It Must Be Fate Terry Fator is the king of headliners at The Mirage, the Strip’s pre-eminent puppet master and impressionist, having brought more than a dozen felt-covered characters to life and cultivated his array of vocal styles since childhood. Having started as a ventriloquist at age 10, Fator nearly gave up his chosen performing art when America’s Got Talent pro-

dude-speaking Duggie makes sure there’s “party on” vibe at the show. Fresh and Fearless Some Tool fans who discovered the iconic heavy metal band as teenagers have spent nearly half their lives waiting for the band’s latest album, 2019’s Fear Inoculum. The members of Tool are notorious perfectionists who’ve spent increasingly longer periods in the studio as their career has progressed. Fear Inoculum followed a 13-year gap between releases, and while not all of that time was spent refining the music, the band members logged plenty of hours in the studio over the course of those years, fine-tuning the epic, intricate songs that ended up on the album. Tool’s music has always been intricate, even when the band’s songs were more concise. The band is heavily influenced by the wonkiness of prog rock along with the intensity of metal, which successfully set them apart from the pack in the ’90s, when they scored radio hits including “Sober,” “Prison Sex” and “Aenema.” Since then, Tool has ventured even further on its own unique path, creating dark, brooding songs with dense composition and haunting lyrics from singer Maynard James Keenan. –Josh Bell

Classic Comedy Up Close and Magical There is a new generation of magicians emerging on the Vegas Strip. It may be premature to predict who will rise to the top but America’s Got Talent champion Mat Franco is a likely suspect. Forbes recently named his residency, Mat Franco: Magic Reinvented Nightly, one of the best shows to see in Las Vegas. This is because Franco is a master of sleightof-hand and misdirection, and he exudes a comfortable confidence. There’s a lot of

audience participation as Franco makes the world disappear for 90 minutes. He’s having a good time onstage, and the feeling is contagious. The close-up specialist says everything that’s happened to him since he began pursuing a career as an illusionist has exceeded expectations. “My goals were always more reasonable,” he says. “They were to create magic, share it with people and hopefully have a positive effect on some of those peoples’ lives.” –Matt Kelemen

Ambrosia is one of those bands whose hits cause listeners to conjure idyllic reminisces of the past. In Ambrosia’s case, that past primarily covers 1978, when they scored No. 3 hit “How Much I Feel,” to 1980 when “Biggest Part of Me” hit No. 3 then crossed over to the soul chart. Those songs, along with “You’re the Only Woman (You & I),” were played through speakers at backyard barbecues and in Chevy Camaros across America, becoming slow dance staples at proms and homecomings. Although Ambrosia’s history dates back longer and extends farther, the sound they developed helps define a sliver in time between disco and hip-hop. The band formed in 1970 as a Southern Californian quartet featuring drummer Burleigh Drummond, keyboardist Christopher North, guitarist David Pack and bassist Joe Puerta, with the latter two handling lead vocals. Acts such as with producer Alan Parsons playing a pivotal role Beyond L.A. Now a sextet, expect all the hits plus the Beach Boys and the Beatles influenced their in their career, but Ambrosia scored big when they covers of the Beatles “Magical Mystery Tour” and early progressive music and vocal arrangements, moved towards jazz and R&B for 1978 album Life Bruce Hornsby’s “The Way It Is.” –Matt Kelemen

Sleeping with Sirens decided to kick off 2020 with an old-fashioned barnstorm across the country, playing 21 dates in 32 days during The Medicine Tour. It’s the kind of pace that used to burn out bands and cut careers short, but by now singer Kellin Quinn knows how much punishment his earnest, fragile tenor can handle. Quinn’s voice is instantly recognizable and as much of an instrument as the keyboards he plays, offsetting the calamitous uproar Sleeping with Sirens is capable of. He sounds as fresh on new album How It Feels to Be Lost as it did on breakthrough track “If I’m James Dean, You’re Audrey Hepburn.” Quinn is also evolving comfortably into the role of mentor for rising bands, creating an organization called Dreamer that pushes music forward by supporting new artists. Sleeping with Sirens are supported by Set It Off, Belmont and Point North on this tour though, taking a break for several months afterward that will afford Quinn time to indulge his passion for taking great bands and making them incredible. –Matt Kelemen

Gordon Ramsay Pub & Grill is loaded with personality and great fare | By NINA KING 26 12.1.19 LasVegasMagazine.com
NOSH CHEERS
Avon Came Upon Sin
When it comes to celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, it might be tempting to think that you are stuck with a fine-dining scene and the foofaraw that entails. Although you can certainly find that at his two fine-dining restaurants in Vegas, Hell’s Kitchen and Gordon Ramsay Steak, you might be surprised to find out that Ramsay also operates other venues that you won’t need to dress up for, including Gordon Ramsay Pub & Grill. The casual environment here is a good representation of the pub, with an interesting décor that stacks kegs around the walls. Seating is comfy, and a number of chairs have oh-so-cute dog pics embossed on the fronts. The restaurant opens at 11 a.m. (and that’s when the bar opens, too). Start your lunch off with a cocktail or two, like Avon Came Upon Sin, a refreshingly light sip of Ketel One cucumber and mint vodka, St-Germain elderflower liqueur, rhubarb and lemon juice. The Park Lane is a pretty little thing with Empress gin, Fever-Tree tonic water and adornments of juniper berries, thyme and lemon, making the typical gin and tonic soooo delicious. The drink menu has plenty of options for wine lovers and, of course, for those who enjoy a pint, everything from Magners to Chimay and Guinness, and several local brews, as befits a proper pub. If your appetite is light, order a Scotch egg or pigs in a blanket, both served with HP sauce. The Scotch egg features a bright yellow and white egg standing out against the thick layer of sausage. If you fancy one of Ramsay’s signature dishes, try it here, from seared diver scallops to the classic beef Wellington. But you can also get a corned beef brisket Reuben—it’s pretty darned thick,

accompanied with Gruyère and sauerkraut on rye. Fish and chips is a U.K. fave, and here the cod is light, the breading not overly crisp, and the fries thick-cut, as they should be. Dig into mushy peas with mint, and that simple combo will surprise you with its goodness. Accompany those esteemed dishes with flavorful side dishes like lobster mac and cheese and crispy Brussels sprouts. The sprouts have the unusual addition of a sriracha glaze, bacon and pickled onion. With the
Sticky toffee pudding
cheesy, cheesy mac combined with flavorful lobster meat, you could make your meal right there. Unless you need dessert, of course, and being at a Gordon Ramsay venue, how could you not order the sticky toffee pudding? It’s rich, ooey-gooey cake that works perfectly with the accompanying vanilla ice cream. You might try the chocolate Wellington or the strawberry trifle, but are you sure you want to stray off the toffee path?

Tracy Brennan
Helping others look and feel their best A new year, a new you. How about a new year, a more beautiful, healthier, more fantastic-feeling you? That’s possible thanks to Tracy Brennan, owner and president of Kalologie MedSpa at Aria. “Our platform is to really encompass everything that is going to help someone look and feel their best,” says the L.A. native. Brennan launched her Kalologie brand in 2004 in L.A. To date she has locations in California, Arizona, Texas and Colorado; Las Vegas is the eighth location. “When we first envisioned the company we looked at lots of ways to make these non-invasive treatments more accessible ... with minimal downtime,” Brennan says. “People are looking for nonsurgical options and things of that nature, so that was really the impetus for it—how could we do that and make it convenient?”
28 1.12.20 LasVegasMagazine.com
Guests to MedSpa can choose from treatments like injectables, laser treatments, skin tightening, IV therapy and CoolSculpting. Since opening, Brennan says a real popular pick has been the lip-filler treatment, as well as the new AquaGold treatment, “it’s truly a red-carpet treatment—you could do it this morning and you look fabulous tonight,” she says. You’ll see Brennan at Kalologie along with her team of registered nurses, medical doctors and nurse practitioners. “For me, working with so many talented people in this industry, we continue to learn just so much about new things that are coming out—new developments, new modalities, new techniques,” she says. “It’s just so dynamic, and I love helping people feel great about themselves. That part is just really rewarding.” –Kiko Miyasato
Not only will you reap the benefits of Brennan’s Kalologie products that are used in many of the treatments offered, but you can take a piece of the spa experience home with you by purchasing some of the brand’s products. A few faves of Brennan’s include: the Infuse Antioxidant Serum, which provides a lightweight hydration and plumping effect; the Envision Eye Cream, which targets all three eye-area concerns like dark circles, puffiness and fine lines and wrinkles; and the Replenish Cellular Night Repair Cream, perfect for dry skin and dry climates. The rich cream penetrates and sinks right into the skin. –KM

Much More Than Barbecue New restaurant spans the globe with cuisine A deliciously unique collaboration between restaurateur and TV personality Ayesha Curry and Bay Area-based superchef Michael Mina, International Smoke (MGM Grand, 702.891.3922) made its Las Vegas debut just before New Year’s Eve with its fifth location. You may have heard it described as a barbecue restaurant, but it’s more accurately imagined as global cuisine with an emphasis on wood-fired cooking, and the flavors are unlike anything you’ve experienced. Start with smoky oysters dabbed with chili breadcrumbs, fresh-baked cornbread slathered
with Thai red curry butter or Tokyo-style fried chicken marinated in ginger and soy. Braised Jamaican oxtail is a decadent and spicy dish laden with scotch bonnet peppers, and rib devotees will have to choose between Korean-style bone-in beef shortribs with kimchi and toasted sesame or St. Louis-cut pork ribs finished with Vietnamese, Korean or classic American barbecue sauces. Share your selections with friends along with the Whiskey and Weather punch bowl, combining bourbon, rum, apples and cinnamon. International Smoke is the tastiest way to start a new year in Vegas. –Brock Radke
Chef Sheridan Su is responsible for putting specific dishes on the mainstream radar in Las Vegas, starting with bao at his first restaurant, Great Bao, and later at Fat Choy inside Eureka Casino. Hainanese chicken became his signature dish at Flock & Fowl, and now he’s opened another spot, Every Grain (1430 E. Charleston Blvd., eateverygrain.com), where lu rou fan, a Taiwanese dish of rice and minced pork, takes center stage. A four-rice blend is topped with braised, minced pork, maitake mushrooms, scallions, shallots, pickled cucumber and soft-boiled soy egg. –Genevie Durano
#trending There are countless classic steakhouse experiences throughout Las Vegas, but Edge Steakhouse (Westgate Las Vegas, 702.732.5277) transcends expectations by delivering a mix of tradition and innovation. Executive chef Steve Young offers a six-course tasting menu that includes 15 different dishes, truly showcasing the best the restaurant has to offer. Among the standouts are Spanish octopus carpaccio and a sublime wagyu beef tartare with quail egg, truffle aioli and beef fat toast. –BR

The Las Vegas Strip is filled with eye-popping delights, but none have captured the imagination of tourists—and filmmakers—more than Bellagio’s iconic fountains. Graceful and elegant, this free attraction is an excellent rejoinder to those who question Sin City’s commitment to sophistication.

From the time he made the Statue of Liberty disappear in 1983, Copperfield commanded everyone’s attention. And in the early 2000s he made Las Vegas home with a sensational show at MGM Grand that continues to evolve. If there was ever an influential magician who could rest on his laurels, it’s Copperfield. But it feels like he’s just getting started.

She’s Got a Certain Something Not only is “She Ready!,” but apparently they are ready for her. The “she” in this instance is Tiffany Haddish (Park Theater at Park MGM, 844.600.7275), the outrageous comedian who seemingly never holds back as evidenced in her first stand-up special, the long-titled Tiffany Haddish: She Ready! From The Hood To Hollywood. The “they” who are ready for her refers to the worldwide audience that has embraced her on the stage and the screen.
While Haddish, 40, has become a mainstream star just in the last few years, mainly due to her breakout performance in the 2017 film Girls Trip, she has been working regularly in film and television since the mid2000s. Some of her greatest hits include her recurring roles on Real House Husbands of Hollywood and The Carmichael Show. Of course, now she is a bonafide A-lister, and her projects include leading roles in films
like The Kitchen, the upcoming Like A Boss and as the host and producer of the reboot of the beloved TV series Kids Say The Darnedest Things. She hits Las Vegas on Jan. 18. Haddish was the first black female comedian to host Saturday Night Live, and her turn there earned her an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. Not only is she ready, but the uproarious Haddish is making the most of it. –Jason Harris
