Celebrate!

• Mexican Independence Day, which falls on Sept. 16 but includes a week’s worth of events in Las Vegas, all designed to help celebrate Mexico’s declaration of independence from Spain in 1810. That list includes the third match between Canelo Álvarez and GGG at T-Mobile Arena (“Coming Out Swinging,” p. 32), as well as a wide variety of musicians (and one comedian) across the Strip (“Muy Caliente!” p. 38).

Once upon a blue moon, a trio of intrepid travelers left their home Blueniverse and landed in Las Vegas, looking for intelligent life. They found a pyramid-shaped structure where a being named Carrot Top built a successful outpost, and calculated that they could draw intelligent life there for performative engagements as did the Red Man. Their theater materialized, a marshmallow supply chain was formed, and the Blue Man Group sent for their intergalactic instruments.

While the show is monochromatic for much of the evening, the Blue Man Group has a fondness for color, and technique was decidedly not obtained from Bob Ross. Whether the Blue Man Group gets nutrients and energy from marshmallows has yet to be determined. Inquiries are met with blank stares, but it has been theorized that a Blue Man brain experiences increased bluerotransmitter levels when catching a marshmallow from a distance. igh-end dining in Las Vegas is everywhere. It isn’t hard to find a place where the standards are as high as the bill (but let’s face it; you get what you pay for). And the newest contender in that arena is Toca Madera, a Mexican steakhouse found just outside Aria at The Shops at Crystals, one of the highest-end shopping centers in Southern Nevada. And Toca Madera is a glorious experience, one you’ll be telling your friends about for some time to come. Fans of the exclusive franchise (the only other two restaurants are in Los Angeles and Scottsdale, Ariz.) will not be disappointed by the Las Vegas outpost. It’s impeccably detailed, with everything from a forest theme and fabric-lined banquettes to a DJ booth with a Day of the Dead-themed wall behind it. Because of its interior design, some areas allow you to “feel” the music more than others. It’s just a relaxing, luxurious, fun space, one that immediately puts you in the mood for a margarita.Asyouwould expect, Toca Madera specializes in tequila- and mezcal-based cocktails, and there are some spectacular options that will have you rethinking the spirit entirely. Wait until you sample the Winnie De Pooh, which uses Avion blanco tequila infused with chamomile, green Chartreuse, mint, ginger, lemon and wildflower honey. It’s tea-like character makes it sinfully easy to drink! If you’re looking for something a bit bolder, definitely order the Los Muertos, a drink that will wake up your tastebuds with El Tesoro reposado,

Desserts are a must here, both attractive and decadent. Our personal favorites are the fluffy strawberry tres leches cake, served with tres leches anglaise and strawberries, and the brown butter cake with toasted feuilletine crumble, berry sauce and vanilla ice cream. Make sure to not waste any of the bourbon toffee sauce, which just makes anything you eat better.

By all means, enjoy the chips and salsa, but don’t forget to order guacamole as well, pepped up here by the addition of pomegranate seeds. The queso fundido is fun, featuring queso Chihuahua, poblano rojas and soyrizo, accompanied by thick, delicious flour tortillas. The raw bar has many creative takes, but our favorite is definitely the sashimi Mexicano, ahi tuna skilfully rolled up for sharing and served with cucumber, avocado, pomegranate, chili de arbol and leche de tigre.

Fanilows make it through the rain for Barry Manilow’s shows at Westgate

By Matt Kelemen

That’s a story for Manilow to tell himself at his shows. He comes back after a summer touring the Northeast and England, so he’s all warmed up for the Fanilows who would make it through any rain to catch their favorite star who promised he’d see them then, when the good times came again.

As far as his own songwriting, Manilow learned how to create melodic hooks when he was a jingle writer, before he began a life-altering gig as Bette Midler’s pianist. It’s impossible to think of “I am stuck on Band-Aid/ ’cause Band-Aid’s stuck on me” or “Like a good neighbor/ State Farm is there” without thinking of the melodies.

LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE 9.11.22 29

Everyone had their own way of dealing with lockdown lethargy. Barry Manilow, of course, expressed himself through song. “When Good Times Come Again” was released July 31 of last year, at the height of pandemic fatigue, with Manilow effectively making a lyrical vow to his loyal Fanilows, who faithfully attend his headlining residency at Westgate Las Vegas, which began in 2018.

“In this high and mighty world we live in/ Sometimes we have to break/ Sometimes we have to bend/ Until the good times come again,” he sings in the 2021 single, delivering another uplifting composition with lyrics that get imprinted in memory. He was back onstage within two months. The FanilowsManilow, rejoiced.whoreturns to Vegas to perform Sept. 15-17, has delivered many uplifting messages, some of which he didn’t write, but made memorable through his impassioned delivery. Baby boomers who read the lines, “I remember all my life/ Raining down as cold as ice” are likely to hear Manilow singing the chorus to “Mandy” in their heads in a voice that was ubiquitous on AM radio in the ’70s.

Manilow recorded solo before producing Midler’s first two albums, but he was far more bankable afterward. He re-recorded “Could It Be Magic,” a song he had co-written with Tony Orlando that was based on a Chopin prelude for his self-titled debut album. It would become the beginning of a long-running relationship with producer Ron Dante, and the song would become a hit upon re-release several years later, but in January 1975 “Mandy” from Manilow II became his first No. 1 song. Arista Records executive Clive Davis had convinced a reluctant Manilow to record it.

Manilow found himself in possession of another No. 1 single in 1975 after releasing “I Write the Songs” by Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys. Manilow’s 1978 album Even Now generated more hits, including “Can’t Smile Without You” and co-written “Even Now” and “Copacabana (at the Copa).” The latter would turn out to be his most iconic hit and is a celebratory high point of his live shows. (For his Westgate show, this song includes a stage that descends from the ceiling, allowing Manilow to dance into the audience.) Manilow plays all his hits, with special segments devoted to his jingles and the very first recording he ever made as a child.

Brandon Godfrey and Sean Stewart Godfrey show great chemistry in ‘Soul of Motown’

WestgateLasVegas ticketmaster.com

By Brock Radke Photograph by Christopher DeVargas

Sean: There are some (songs by) artists that were not Motown artists. Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” will always be my favorite song, and it was originally done by Dolly Parton, who is from Tennessee, my home state.

Brandon: When I first came in for the audition and saw her onstage, I just thought, she is beautiful. The whole night, I could care less about the other guys performing. I was in another show at the time and had to drive back to Virginia, and I told my friend that night that there’s this girl in the show, and that’s gonna be my girl. But I had to bide my time.

Sean: It gets no better. Motown has the ability to bring you out whatever you’re feeling. It can shift your spirit.

What sets Soul of Motown apart from other concert-style musicals in Sean:Las Vegas?

Was there an instant spark when you first met back in 2018 while performing Tennessee?

What’s it like to be onstage together performing those classic, romantic Motown duets?

A lot of other shows are doing impersonations or other things to take you back to that era. The thing we love about this show is we can bring our own twist to it, individualize it to give our own perception of that song. It’s a modern Motown concert, a tribute to the artists from our hearts.

It’s clear that you love performing together, and I’m sure it helps that this is some of the most familiar feel-good music of all time.

Sean: It was six months before I had any idea whatsoever. Everybody else seemed to be in on the secret but me!

oul of Motown is one of the most popular musical tribute shows in Las Vegas, and the undeniable onstage chemistry between Sean Stewart Godfrey and Brandon Godfrey is a big part of the show’s success. The two talented singers were married in 2020 after launching the show with their castmates at the Westgate Cabaret in 2019, a rollicking tour through some of the most beloved music in American history. It’s a can’t-miss production, but it hits an emotional peak when these artists duet.

Do you have favorite tracks you still love Brandon:to sing?

“Tracks of My Tears” is probably my favorite. It’s a classic and it tells a story, and I’m a big theater person. It’s a pretty song to stand and sing, but when you get the story and the emotion behind the song, you feel like you’ve never heard it that way before.

Sean: Because we’re married, we gel perfectly onstage. It works for us, and it’s funny, because we had chemistry to begin with. Even before we were together, people who knew nothing about us would come up and talk to us, thinking we’re together.

Brandon: You don’t realize what type of energy you exude. With us, there’s always been a connection that reads well to the audience.

Brandon: There’s a timbre, a sound that Motown brings, a beat that Motown brings, and it just makes you feel something. That’s the feeling Motown was going for back in its time. There was a lot going on, those were tough times. Motown makes you forget about everything that’s going on and says, I’m here for a good time. It exudes love.

Saul “Canelo” Álvarez says it’s personal. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin says that’s Álvarez’s problem, and Saturday night’s clash at T-Mobile Arena between the two fighters is all business. For boxing fans, it’s a Las Vegas fight night—an o -the-hook holiday of hype, partying, pomp and circumstance, and overall electric atmosphere—during Mexican Independence Day celebrations that will go down in history as the conclusion to one of the sport’s rare three-part rivalries, with the winner raising a glove as undisputed super middleweight champion.

Álvarez, at age 30 the current possessor of all five super-middleweight titles, guarantees maximum box o ce and pay-per-view draws on streaming service DAZN, which ranks him at No. 4 pound-for-pound across all weight classes. Golovkin, 40, holds middleweight championships sanctioned by the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Association. He’ll have to register between 160 and 168 pounds the day of the weigh-in.

Golovkin’s insinuation that the scales were tipped in Álvarez’s favor during their previous bouts incurred Álvarez’s hostility. Things get personal for Álvarez

Álvarez also needs redemption after losing in an upset to light-heavyweight Dmitry Bivol in May, which may account in part for the steely determination Álvarez exuded at June press conferences in New York and L.A. Álvarez’s only other loss was to Floyd Mayweather Jr. when he far less experienced.

He also scheduled victory celebrations at Resorts World, where he plans to hold court at Zouk Nightclub as Travis Scott performs. That’s likely to also be the destination for the winner of the 10-round middleweight fight topping the undercard between southpaw Austin “Ammo” Williams and Kieron Conway, which will also be streamed internationally by DAZN in partnership with Matchroom Sport, Canelo Promotions and GGG Promotions.

when his victories are contested, and he made his older nemesis wait four years for a third fight. Álvarez was particularly o ended by what he felt was a contrast between Golovkin’s congenial demeanor at the press conferences and his previous dismissive tone. Álvarez used a seven-letter pejorative to refer to Golovkin. Golovkin called Álvarez a “red mouse.”

Also scheduled to square o are super-middleweights Diego Pacheco and Enrique Collazo, and Ali Akhmedov and Gabriel Rosado.

It’s Álvarez who is the biggest draw, though. His trilogy with Golovkin could be one for the history books along with Muhammad Ali’s three fights against Joe Frazier and Sugar Ray Leonard’s series with Roberto Duran. Álvarez and Golovkin are both very aware they are fighting for their legacies as well as against each other.

fee. axs.com

Their first clash at T-Mobile in September 2017 ended in a draw, and a year later, Álvarez won by majority decision. This time, the fight won’t go the distance, claims Álvarez. Both fighters need to win within 12 rounds to settle the rivalry, with the victor walking away holding super middleweight titles from the IBF, WBA, World Boxing Council and The Ring magazine. Golovkin will still be a unified middleweight champion regardless of the outcome, but Álvarez says he plans to make Golovkin retire.

Donny Osmond celebrates a life of entertainment in his Harrah’s show

It’s exhausting. It’s funny. It’s simply brilliant.

The song selection alone is dizzying. Osmond performs no fewer than 20 songs, some his own and some covers to pay tribute to the special people in his life (“Moon River” for Andy Williams and “In My Life” during a very touching tribute to hisFanssister).of his ’70s work will probably get goosebumps during a segment where he breaks out the white, bedazzled jacket for a spirited performance of “One Bad Apple,” accompanied by, well, not his brothers. But who really cares? For three minutes, you’re a kid again. Does it matter how it happens?

LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE 9.11.22 35

You’ll hear all about his years performing with his siblings and appearing on shows like Andy Williams’; you’ll take a detour into some of his movie work, most notably Mulan, which comes complete with a production number; you’ll take an impromptu journey through his more than 60(!) records as Osmond fields audience requests—name a song, and he’ll do his darnedest to remember how it goes (it doesn’t always work, which is part of the fun).

That’s the exact same dynamic of Donny Osmond’s current solo show on the Las Vegas Strip. No longer is he performing with his sister, so the back-and-forth banter is gone, but he more than makes up for the omission with a slew of additions. And he manages to condense a career spanning more than 50 years into just a little under an hour and a half—no small feat when you consider everything this master showman hasOsmondachieved.is ably assisted onstage by talented backup dancers, while video screens complement all the memories he revisits. The production also includes a movable platform and plenty of costume changes.

In my household in the 1970s, there were certain shows that were appointment television for my entire family. One of them was definitely Donny and Marie, a variety show that probably seems extremely quaint and dated by today’s standards, but at the time it was irresistible entertainment. It had all the usual elements of variety shows of the period: Guest stars, crazy costumes, plenty of dad jokes and very hokey dancing. But what really made this one stand out among the rest was the relationship the star siblings had with their audience, both in the studio and in living rooms across America. Their charisma, combined with their back-andforth banter, made you feel like a member of their family. For an hour, you felt like you were hanging out with a friend.

But the undeniable highlight of this show is the10-minuteauto-rap-ography,Osmond’sanearlynumberinwhichstarrarelyseemstotake a breath, blazing his way through every small detail of his life, from his appearances on such
