The Spice of Life

When you listen to Spotify (or Pandora or Soundcloud or any of the premium music streaming services), how do you do it? Do you look for a specific artist? A music genre? A particular decade? A radio station? Odds are it’s all of the above, depending on your mood. Music is easily one of the most personal choices we make as consumers of entertainment; our tastes change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly. Me? One day I’ll listen to Radiohead. The next it’s Barry Manilow. Then Nas. Then Squeeze. Whatever frame of mind you’re currently in, there’s music for it.

Las Vegas has, arguably, the most varied live music lineup in the world. On any given week you can enjoy a country artist, take in a Broadway musical, get nostalgic with a rock band that’s been hard at it for 50-plus years and get seriously drunk while singing along to a yacht rock cover band. This week o ers you many such options, two of which are featured in this week’s issue: Country superstar Luke Bryan, who returns to his Resorts World Las Vegas residency (“Count on Country,” p. 32), and Carlos Santana, who returns to his House of Blues residency at Mandalay Bay (“Love Devotion Surrender,” p. 36 ). Both these shows will get you in a seriously good mood.

The STRAT restaurant’s seasonal menu is full of delicious twists on classics

Top of the World has a feature you won’t find anywhere else on the Las Vegas Strip: As you dine, the scenery continually changes, because the restaurant sits atop The STRAT and is always in a state of slow rotation. For that reason alone, Top of the World is worth a visit; but its menu is absolutely stellar and, like the views from the room itself, always changing. Even if you’ve been multiple times, this latest menu update has delicious surprises in store.

Before you dig into executive chef Chad Castanino’s latest lineup, make sure to settle in with a signature cocktail. There’s so much fun to be discovered here, from My Name is Chad, featuring Buffalo Trace bourbon, Mr. Black cold brew coffee liqueur and chocolate bitters, to the Honey Bumble Bee, made with Deep Eddy ruby red grapefruit vodka, fresh lemon juice, pineapple, Aperol and honey syrup.

Now get ready to tantalize your tastebuds with some new seasonal items! Start with smoked chicken and white chili cheese dip with pickled pepper relish and served with spiced taro chips and a honey drizzle. Vegetarians are sure to love both the polpetti tartuto, so flavorful with country tomato sauce, Manchego cheese and winter white truffle, and wild mushroom ravioli, flavored with sweet soy sauce, spicy yuzu aioli, crushed peanuts and togarashi.

Duck in for an authentic Irish experience

When you head into Rí Rá Irish Pub, you may feel like you’ve gone back in time a century or two. The restaurant and eatery inside Mandalay Place (on the skybridge between Luxor and Mandalay Bay) is modeled after 19th-century Irish pubs, with materials sourced and restored from actual pubs. There are several themed rooms, from the Shop Bar to the Victorian Bar. Each has a different style, like the hominess of the Shop area, decorated with vintage containers, bottles and memorabilia. In the Victorian Bar, chandeliers hang over the magnificent bar, and in a niche on the wall is a statue of Saint Patrick.

Stadium Swim at Circa continues its seasonal signature party Winter Swim , which this week includes the Winter Swim Bikini Contest on Feb. 4.

Welcome to Flight Club, the newest place to play on the Strip—and trust us, you’re going to want to bring your friends. “We’re the home of social darts,” says general manager Steve Ely. “It’s a way to experience darts with a large group of people and it gives you the ability to interact with others while playing a game.”

The company, popular in its other locations in Chicago, Boston and Houston, recently opened its fourth location at The Venetian, and the entertainment

venue has already received great fanfare and hosted large crowds.

The 16,000-square-foot venue is filled with visual delights, decorated in the theme of “Victorian fairgrounds meets British pub.” Whether you’re a beginner or novice dart player, your group will have fun in your individual “oche,” (pronounced like “hockey” without the “h”), which can accommodate up to a dozen people. Here you’ll enjoy playing different games of darts—Flight Club uses its proprietary scoring sys-

tem, which tracks the darts’ scores so that you don’t have to keep track of the points yourself. There is no charge to book an oche; you just pay a per-person fee to play (like bowling). You get 90 minutes, and there is no food and beverage spending minimum.

After serving six years in the Marine Corps, Michael Medina took a bartending job on the side to supplement his income. Working in bars and underground clubs in San Francisco, he discovered he had a knack for the industry—and better than that, he liked it. So 15 years ago, Medina brought his skills to Las Vegas, and for the past year and a half he’s been at Aria working as the director of beverage.

“I’ve had a pretty charmed career, I must say,” Medina says. He’s right! Medina’s resume reads like a who’s who

in the industry—the top nightclubs, properties, dayclubs, bars and restaurants in Vegas. (He even spent time in L.A. running top nightlife spots.)

Starters here include beef curry puffs with toasted cumin; crispy tofu with hot and spicy ginger sauce; and sweet and sour pork ribs. Oxtail noodle soup is rich, with ginger and green onions.

There are two types of bao buns, one featuring Korean fried chicken with spicy soy mayo and pickled daikon, the other filled with pork belly and a hoisin glaze. The dim sum menu has choices like pork xiao long soup dumplings, char siu pork buns, Cantonese spring rolls with crispy fried vegetables and seafood har gow.

Bulgogi fried rice adds to the typical dish with shaved marinated ribeye and kimchi, with a fried egg atop.

of the most dynamic new restaurants to open in the last few months in Las Vegas has to be Chi Asian Kitchen in The STRAT. Tucked down a short corridor off the casino floor (and easily accessible from the garage), Chi Asian Kitchen features a variety of Asian dishes, with a focus on Chinese cuisine.

Inside the restaurant, you’ll find several different styles of dining environments, all based around the idea of a Chinese alley restaurant. On one side is a bar with an overhanging roof, while along the sides of the space are numerous themed alcoves emulating the various areas you’d find down an alley, including graffiti. But dark woods and large graphic art pieces elevate the area.

Chi serves up a variety of alcoholic beverages, with beer from China and Japan, sake, shoji, wine and signature cocktails like the Age Before Beauty, mixed with Akashi ume whiskey, Barrow’s Intense ginger liqueur, yuzu juice, lemongrass syrup and blackberries. The Heart of the Dragon is infused with Ciroc Peach vodka, Lillet

Rosé apertif, lychee juice and yuzu juice, plus rose water.

As you glance over the diverse menu, it’s obvious that Chi embraces a wide variety of cuisines and plays with dishes (to delicious effect).

Noodle dishes abound, from beef chow fun to braised mushroom yee fu noodles, with spicy mushrooms and crispy garlic. Kung pao chicken noodles are enhanced with peanuts, red peppers and scallions—and chili crunch.

Should you care for dessert, try the mango sticky rice, with sweetened rice, coconut milk and sliced mango.

Five songs to look forward to at Luke Bryan’s Vegas show

With “Country On,” his 30th No.1 single, under his belt, a fresh season of judging American Idol on the horizon and an immensely popular Vegas residency, Luke Bryan clearly has us drunk on him. You can keep the Bryan buzz going Feb. 1 and 3-4 as he continues entertaining Strip audiences.

“We wanted to bring a different show to the fans visiting Vegas. A show that would be different than coming to see me on my summer tour,” Bryan said. “We are really happy with how it turned out and with the state-of-theart sound and lighting at Resorts World it just kicks it to another level.”

Ryan Hurd and Zach Crowell, this tender song features creative melodies that complement Bryan’s rich vocals as he chronicles an emotional experience.

Throwback tune “Do I” comes from 2009’s Doin’ My Thing album and was written by Bryan and Lady A members Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley. Lady A lead singer Hillary Scott also had a hand in the making of this track and is featured on background vocals. Telling the story of a couple calling their relationship to question, Bryan and Scott’s harmonies combine with

impressive instrumentals to create a truly beautiful song.

Another chart-topping hit, “Roller Coaster,” from the singer’s Crash My Party album, features smooth sounds, with a sense of intimacy and sincerity coming through its lyrics. This tune was co-written by singer-songwriter Cole Swindell, who formerly sold merch for Bryan, and guitarist Michael Carter. Inspired by the Miracle Strip Amusement Park in Panama City, Fla., “Roller Coaster” is easy to listen to and even easier to sing along with.

Co-written by Bryan and Jeff Stevens, “Someone Else Calling You Baby” became Bryan’s second No. 1 hit. Also from the Doin’ My Thing album, this somewhat upbeat track delivers storytelling and relatability through Bryan’s steady voice accompanied by some delightful electric guitar.

Though many of Bryan’s songs convey a more serious narrative, the singer-songwriter is also known to put out some exciting dance hits, and “Move,” off his 2016 Kill the Lights album, perfectly provides music that makes you want to, well, move. Co-written by Bryan, Carter and Jay Clementi, this up-tempo country rock jam is simply fun. The infectious beat will have you on your feet and swaying your hips in seconds, and when the last note is played, you’ll wish he’d do it all over again.

BattleBots: Destruct-A-Thon presents metal machine massacres live

There is still time before the robot overlords take over. The smartest geeks in the room maintain hegemony over radio-controlled ultimate fighting machines for now, with the best currently coming from all over the world to compete at BattleBots Destruct-A-Thon in Las Vegas. It’s mechanical carnage on a scale previously unachieved before the BattleBots World Championship began taping at Caesars Entertainment Studios last year.

This week, the venue begins hosting live shows at BattleBots Arena Thursdays through Sundays, in which competitors spin, pound, hack, scoop and shove each other into hazards that

pummel and immobilize. Destruction devices familiar to viewers of the BattleBots Discovery network series such as Witch Doctor, Kraken, Mammoth, Hypershock and Whiplash will compete to the death against new monsters of metal.

Battling robots have been on television for several decades, but the pastime’s roots reach back further to the turbulent ’70s and Survival Research Laboratories. SRL was an industrial art answer to punk rock, more installations than competitions. Innovatively conceived and constructed machines breathed fire, weathered explosions and attacked each other in demolition spectacles that were absurd, violent, noisy and extremely entertaining.

Denver was the site of the first clash for robot supremacy, Critter Crunch, in 1987. Four years later, Atlanta hosted the first machine melee on the East Coast. BattleBots, adapted from British TV series Robot Wars, made its American television debut on Comedy Central in 2000. By that time, an entire generation had grown up with awareness of killer robots. Student groups from MIT

to Stanford University raised the stakes year by year.

The show went on hiatus for more than a decade before being revived by ABC in 2016, then picked up by Discovery in 2018. There are methods to the madness, rules of the game. Budding bot builders submit designs for armored assailants that must be approved by BattleBots before construction begins. Robots can walk, hop, roll, fly or slither, as long as they can move in a controlled manner without damaging the arena. Maximum weight is 250 pounds.

What the producers and audiences really want to see is awesome weapons. Many of the pounding and hacking gadgets look innocuous until whipping into action. Clamps can be powerful grasping tools that neutralize opponents by flipping them over or maneuvering them into BattleBots Arena’s huge horizontal turning screws. Woe be unto any robot that does not have the ability to right itself after being turned upside down.

The fighting is adrenalizing, with crunching impacts and sparks flying from powerful grinding wheels driving live audiences into frenzies. Half the fun is arbitrarily rooting for a fighting robot and feeling the elation of victory or sharing deflation of defeat with the losing team. The only things that get hurt are feelings when the aspirations of bot builders are chopped to pieces or hammered into oblivion before their eyes. On the bright side, the lessons of loss will inspire the designs of the next champions to emerge from the warscape of BattleBots Destruct-A-Thon

When Carlos Santana is onstage, he’s surrounded by an amazing ensemble of musicians. Not just his band, which includes spouse and sonic soulmate Cindy Blackman Santana on drums, but also the presences of influences and peers who are no longer with us. Santana is the star of his residency at the House of Blues inside Mandalay Bay, but he shares the stage with the spirits of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, John Coltrane (1973 album Love Devotion Surrender was a tribute to the artist), Mike Bloomfield and many other supremely talented players.

Santana was a progenitor of world music before that term entered the cultural lexicon. His father was a professional working violinist, inaugurating young Carlos to the sweet sustain generated by stringed instruments at a formative age. Santana, the band, began gigging in San Francisco’s

fertile music scene in 1967, playing extended engagements in ballrooms and theaters before a triumphant appearance at Woodstock.

By that time, the bandleader, singer/keyboardist Gregg Rolie and drummer Michael Shrieve, had already reimagined African music in a rock setting with Babatunde Olatunji’s “Jingo.” Their breakthrough “Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen” channeled the British blues of Fleetwood Mac and gypsy jazz of Gábor Szabó through the salsa style of Tito Puente and lead guitar phrasing of B.B. King. Carlos Santana was never one to rest on his laurels, though. In October, he and Shrieve observed the 50th anniversary of the band’s fourth album, Caravanserai, a shift into jazzy improvisation that led Rolie to leave with fellow band member Neal Schon to form Journey. Record executive Clive Davis told Santana the album was career suicide.

It’s now considered a major milestone in Santana’s career, one that built upon Coltrane’s legacy and expanded on the fusion explorations Miles Davis embarked on in the late ’60s. Caravanserai also marked the point when Santana’s crystalline guitar tone coalesced into the recognizable signature it remains today.

That tone was established with Gibson guitars that readily accommodated rapidly evolving, arena-worthy amplifier and live sound technology as the ’60s gave way to the ’70s. Santana made a few detours with his primary instruments, but after striking up a friendship with luthier Paul Reed Smith, he became the most prominent endorser of PRS Guitars. The beautiful gold guitar he plays onstage is the result of decades of collaboration between player and designer. The clear-as-a-bell perfection that PRS provides was the sound that introduced Santana to a new generation with 1999 album Supernatural and me-

ga-hit single “Smooth.” Setlist staples such as “Evil Ways,” “Oye Como Va” and “Soul Sacrifice” breathe with new life at Mandalay Bay, and songs such as hard-rocking “Open Invitation” from 1978’s Inner Secrets surge with the power enabled by modern guitar and sound system tech.

An evening with Santana at House of Blues is more than a concert. It’s a revisiting and celebration of a legend ’s life’s work, with surprises and curveballs that consistently keep the show fresh. He considers his albums and songs his children, making his House of Blues concerts family gatherings where everyone is welcome.

ROSÈNN has made a significant impact on the Las Vegas live entertainment landscape in recent years with the familyfriendly, very Vegas production WOW at the Rio. Last year, he saw a new project come to fruition, a unique take on a more grown-up show genre, when he opened Rouge at The STRAT last year. Las Vegas Magazine’s editor at large Brock Radke checked in with him to find out what makes this sexy stage show stand out.

Rouge falls into the category of other burlesque-style, topless shows in Las Vegas, but it’s very different. What inspired its creation?

I think you have to see it in order to really understand what it is. It is a topless show, but it’s very artistic, and it’s the first time I’ve done something like that. I’ve seen almost every show in Vegas, including the female revues and most of the male revues. I’d also seen Zumanity (formerly at New York-New York), a great inspiration for all of us. What it started 17 years ago was really something. There’s really nothing out there now that combines men and women together with this scale, the spectacle of a big show. That’s what this is, a big show in a small theater.

Is this something you put together specifically for The STRAT Theater, or had it been in development for a while?

I had this show in mind for a long time ... and I knew I wanted to do it because I saw what there was around town and around the world. It’s very modern. The music is up

to date and it’s not like the showgirls and topless revues from the past, that was not my inspiration. I would say my inspiration was (the film) Fifty Shades of Grey, and really just the common, everyday couple, portrayed in the opening scene.

How does that scene set the tone for the rest of the show?

You see them in bed, saying, “Oh, I have a headache, I’m tired, maybe tomorrow.” We’re all going through this. And the suddenly, you see these hands coming up in the bed, and soon we are filling the stage with this huge lingerie party.

Why was it important for Rouge to be accessible?

It’s not just about having these beautiful dancers and acrobats and performers. This is about the freedom of the body, and feeling good about yourself. And I felt the connection between the performers doesn’t have to be woman to man, it can be man to man or woman to woman or whatever, and we want to show that connection onstage in an artistic way.

The comedy and acrobatic elements in Rouge really stand out in the intimate confines of The STRAT Theater.

The theater is very cozy, even though it seats around 650 for our show. The lighting is great. People get to come in and see all these characters all around them and it’s quite a shock, how close it is. This is a good theater for me, with a lot of booths and tables, and it’s perfect for me to match what (The STRAT) wanted for a real late-night show.
