What’s in a Name? Lots

Las Vegas is a city of constant change, and I’m not talking about just the constant growth that includes properties, entertainment and sports venues (including the recent announcement that it is, in fact, getting a Major League Baseball team soon). That constant change also applies to the names of various venues. One of the recent newsworthy name changes occurred at Planet Hollywood Resort, where the concert venue previously known as Zappos Theater has been changed to Bakkt Theater, complete with a multimillion-dollar renovation to what was already an impressive performance space.

Rest assured—your entertainment experience at Bakkt Theater will be just as good, if not possibly better, than it was at Zappos Theater. And one of the fi rst acts to grace the newly named space is The Chicks (speaking of name changes, they were previously Dixie Chicks), performing a mini-residency there (“Six-Night Flight,” p. 32).

And that’s just the beginning of the amazing entertainment options available to you this week. The musical fun continues with Kool & The Gang, which brings its danceable catalog to Westgate Las Vegas this week (“Time to Groove,” p. 21), while comedy fans will defi nitely want to check out edgy stand-up Bill Burr’s set at Dolby Live at Park MGM (“Comedian’s Comedian,” p. 34).

And we haven’t even gotten to dinner yet! If you love Italian cuisine (who doesn’t?), check out Osteria Costa at The Mirage (“A Seaside Charmer,” p. 28). Mediterranean fans will go crazy for the ambience of Kassi Beach House at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas (“Coastal Classic,” p. 14). And the Mexican brunch at Toca Madera is sublime (“Thanks a Brunch,” p. 48).

The names may change in Las Vegas, but the feeling you get when you’re here never does.

Festival brings together some of the greatest performers of the past 30 years

Some of the hottest acts of the last 30 years converge upon Las Vegas this week for Lovers & Friends. More than 45 artists are packing the Las Vegas Festival Grounds for a day of hip-hop, R&B and rap in a celebration of the evolution of the various genres.

This year’s lineup includes:

• Missy Elliott, whose Supa Dupa Fly cemented her place in hip-hop history after paying dues shaping other artists’ sounds. Her legendary status was only cemented more with the recent unveiling of her wax figure at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas at The Venetian, which features her in the track suit she wore to the 2019 MTV Video Awards (This year’s festival is her first billed appearance since that year.)

• Mariah Carey, one of music history’s top-selling artists and a huge influence on today’s singers, few of whom can match her five-octave range demonstrated on classics like “One Sweet Day” and “Fantasy.”

• Usher, who currently enjoys a Las Vegas residency of his own at Dolby Live at Park MGM and is still as hot as he was the year he debuted his self-titled album in 1994. Expect plenty of classics like “Yeah!” and “My Way,” along with some of his signature dance moves.

• Pitbull, a rapper who boasts 35 Billboard Latin Music Awards and has sold more than 25 million albums and 100 million singles worldwide on the strength of songs like “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho),” “Give Me Everything” and “Feel This Moment.”

• Christina Aguilera, considered by most critics as one of the greatest singers of all time and, like Carey, a major influence on today’s artists. She started strong in the ’90s with songs like “What a Girl Wants” and lost no steam in subsequent decades; from albums and collaborations to movies and TV, she has remained fresh and relevant for millions of fans.

• 50 Cent, a rapper whose range seems to know no bounds. In 20 years, he’s done everything from releasing No. 1 singles like “21 Questions” to starring in movies and television, all while founding his own record label, G-Unit Records. –Ken Miller

Beach-themed restaurant excels at Mediterranean favorites

Those amazing Las Vegas temperatures are officially here, and if you are in Vegas and missing the beaches a bit, there’s only one place to go: Kassi Beach House, which re-creates the feeling of an oceanside restaurant like no other in town.

Designed by L.A.-based restaurateur Nick Mathers, the Mediterranean-themed Kassi Beach House is a delight to experience—a welcoming archway leads into décor that instantly makes you think of a patio area of a large home. There are several other smaller dining areas, most of which are lit by natural light via floor-to-ceiling windows for brunch and lunch. Seating is highly varied—everything from long wooden tables and booths to couches, all within earshot of a DJ area. When the sun goes down for dinner, the soft lighting really enhances the beachy vibe.

While you peruse the menu for a cocktail, you’ll be impressed by the activity nearby—on the opposite wall from the windows is a huge oven, as well as a pass-through so you can see the kitchen staff busily building your repast.

There are so many great signature cocktail choices, from the Free Bird, made with tequila, lime, watermelon and mint, or the Amalfi Slushie, a refreshing mix of Cazadores blanco, lime, watermelon and pineapple. For the rum fans out there, a perfect libation is the Subtropic Slushie, made with Mount Gay rum, lime, passion fruit and orange.

Several fantastic dishes can be found at both brunch and dinner here, from the branzino (six ounces of oven-roasted white fish served with confit fingerling potatoes, roasted fennel and roasted cherry tomatoes in a rose white sauce) to perfectly cooked pizzas ranging from classics like the margherita to burrata (crushed tomatoes, burrato and oregano) and truffle (a true taste sensation with truffled ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan, pecorino, shaved black truffle and white truffle oil).

Don’t skip dessert, as there are so many options perfect to send you out into the night with a smile on your face. We recommend the housemade ice cream sandwich, perfect for sharing with pistachio gelato, marshmallow and chocolate. –Ken

Lounge’s ‘Great Gatsby’-themed party is back for another season

Indulge in exploration at this Chinese eatery

One of the most dynamic new restaurants to open in the last few months in Las Vegas has to be Chi Asian Kitchen in The STRAT. Tucked down a short corridor off the casino floor (and easily accessible from the garage), Chi Asian Kitchen features a variety of Asian dishes, with a focus on Chinese cuisine.

Inside the restaurant, you’ll find several different styles of dining environments, all based around the idea of a Chinese alley restaurant. On one side is a bar with an overhanging roof, while along the sides of the space are numerous themed alcoves emulating the various areas you’d find down an alley, including graffiti. But dark woods and large graphic art pieces elevate the area.

As you glance over the diverse menu, it’s obvious that Chi embraces a wide variety of cuisines and plays with dishes (to delicious effect).

Starters here include beef curry puffs with toasted cumin; crispy tofu with hot and spicy ginger sauce; and sweet and sour pork ribs. Oxtail noodle soup is rich, with ginger and green onions.

There are two types of bao buns, one featuring Korean fried chicken with spicy soy mayo and pickled daikon, the other filled with pork belly and a hoisin glaze. The dim sum menu has choices like pork xiao long soup dumplings, char siu pork buns, Cantonese spring rolls with crispy fried vegetables and seafood har gow. Bulgogi fried rice adds to the typical dish with shaved marinated ribeye and kimchi, with a fried egg atop.

Crispy fried whole fish, a signature dish for the restaurant, creates a spectacle on the table, and other signature dishes include sweet and sour pork ribs, pictured, and Mongolian beef.

Noodle dishes abound, from beef chow fun to braised mushroom yee fu noodles, with spicy mushrooms and crispy garlic. Kung pao chicken noodles are enhanced with peanuts, red peppers and scallions—and chili crunch.

Should you care for dessert, try the mango sticky rice, with sweetened rice, coconut milk and sliced mango. –Nina King

New Kid on the Block

Intimate space at AREA15 brings in music, comedy and more

AREA15, an immersive arts and entertainment district across the freeway from the Las Vegas Strip, has quickly become a crown jewel of the city since its opening in the fall of 2020. The multibuilding juggernaut has consistently added to its offerings and its square footage upon the large acreage it sits upon.

One of the newest tenants inside the main building is The Wall, a multipurpose events and music space. Entering the intimate venue is like stepping into the midnight hours (all the walls are

painted black). For live musical performances, there’s a small stage backed by a large LED video wall. The room’s vibe is enhanced by state-of-the-art lighting and musical capabilities. Guests can also enjoy a small bar area and cushy seating along the entire back wall.

The Wall plays host to various events each month including concerts, karaoke, DJs, trivia night, theatrical shows and more. This week, catch Psychedelic Sundays: A Better Trip with Shane Mauss, starting Sunday, April 30, and every Sunday through May 28.

Mauss, an award-winning comedian, blends science and psychedelics for a comedy show that expands the mind and the belly with laughter. On Thursday, May 4, enjoy house-music sounds combined with ambient beats from French electronic-music DJ, Darius. Time to Groove

Dance band brings huge catalog of party hits to Las Vegas

It’s almost a sure bet that there’s a wedding in every state in the country right at this moment playing Kool & The Gang as part of the reception. The band’s discography is synonymous with a party atmosphere, and they bring that party to Westgate Las Vegas this week.

Few hit singles have had the widespread influence of “Celebration,” the band’s No. 1 hit from 1980 that is still in heavy use today, not only at weddings but during sporting events and political rallies. If that were the only single that Kool & The Gang had released, it would probably be enough to guarantee their place in popular culture, but the group has pumped out so many other classics to keep the party going all night long. “Jungle Boogie” was famously used in Pulp Fiction, while “Boogie Shoes” was featured in Saturday Night Fever

The New Jersey-based band has undergone multiple personnel changes since forming in 1964, but founding members Robert “Kool” Bell and George “Funky” Brown, pictured, are still front and center, now joined by Michael Ray, Curtis “Fitz” Williams, Shawn McQuiller and Timothy Horton. Expect plenty of dancing during this show when they string together grooves like “Get Down On It,” “Ladies Night,” “Too Hot” and “Let’s Groove.”

It should also be noted that Kool and company are close to celebrating their 60th anniversary (Gee, wonder what song will be playing when that happens?). –Ken

In celebration of the 100th year of commercial production of Japanese whiskey, Las Vegas Magazine is honoring the country’s spirit by rounding up three top spots on the Strip that showcase the alcohol. In the last few decades, Japanese whiskey has become an in-demand drinking pleasure.

“Because of the lack of regulation with Japanese whiskey, you get brands customizing more and blending different woods in the barrels and grains and malts,” said Rob Capstraw, bar manager at Nobu at Caesars Palace, which has one of the largest collections of Japanese whiskies in Las Vegas.

“I personally think there’s such a difference in styles that are available with Japanese whiskey, more than with Scotch whiskey, which can be heavy and peated. I feel like there’s a Japanese whiskey for everyone.”

Capstraw has helped amass a collection of more than 100 different selections, including some bottles that are no longer available for purchase and vintage, limited-edition selections. Some of the most rare, coveted bottles include the Karuizawa 1984 map series, Karuizawa 1999 Noh 13 Year Old mask series,

both pouring for more than $1,000 per ounce.

More reasonably priced whiskies in Nobu’s collection include brands like Hibiki, Yamazaki and Hakushu. Nobu also spotlights Japanese whiskies in a couple of different cocktails, like one of the restaurant’s most popular, the Kunsei Old-Fashioned, made with Shibui whiskey and monk fruit simple syrup and finished with an applewood smoke.

dessert, the Whiskey Cappuccino, created with made-in-house ingredients. The four-layer dessert stacks a coffee custard base, chocolate coffee crumble and milk-flavored ice cream, all topped with an Iwai Japanese whiskey-flavored foam.

of Japanese whiskies. And recently Zuma got its hands on the highly sought-after Yamazaki Tsukuriwake 2022 limited-edition release, which features four special blends: Puncheon Single Malt, Spanish Oak Single Malt, Peated Malt Single Malt and Mizunara Single Malt.

“Each single malt is unique unto itself, with the Peated Malt having notes of subtle smoke with green herbs and a complex lingering peatiness to finish,” explained Josh Kougl, Zuma’s general manager. “The Puncheon Single Malt refers to the large cask size, which equates to approximately 480 liters, giving this whiskey hints of vanilla, acacia honey with a finish of oaky woodiness and subtle sweetness. The Spanish Oak Single Malt is aged in the highest-quality oak casks from the Northern Spain region, which gives this whiskey its rich, reddish amber hue, giving flavors of sundried raisins and prunes finished off with a buttery, lingering acidity.

“To finish off the series is the Mizunara Single Malt. Mizunara is a Japanese oak that is very difficult to work with and imparts incense-like

flavors of sandalwood with a custard cream and cinnamon finish.”

Whether one prefers whiskies neat or in cocktails, Wakuda at The Venetian is a must-visit. Daniel Yang, the restaurant’s corporate mixologist, paid careful attention to

picking out an impressive collection of Japanese whiskies in addition to creating three absolutely delicious specialty cocktails that use the spirit. Try the Cable Guy, with a choice of Japanese whiskey, freshpressed apple juice and Benedictine, or try the Okinawa Mist, a tiki-style cocktail with Japanese rum and Japanese whiskey mixed with passion fruit.

For Japanese whiskey novices, Yang explained, “Japanese whiskey is a little more unique in that they don’t have the same restrictions that bourbon or rye or Scotch does; they have the ability to use grain, rice or wheat; they have so much more freedom to create different profiles.”

And the best way to pique your palate’s interest for Japanese whiskey is to try one of Wakuda’s whiskey flights. You can get a taste of different labels that include popular brands like Hibiki, Shibui and Nikka, as well as lesser-known brands like Shinobu and Shunka Shuto. –Kiko Miyasato

General manager keeps on the path to success

Twelve years ago, New York native Rich Bonhomme came to a fork in the road. “I got my masters in TV, radio and film and was ... at Sirius XM for three years while working in Manhattan nightlife and then had the opportunity to make a left turn and stay in the TV, radio industry or make a right turn and go full-blown into nightlife,” he says. “And I made the right turn, and I’ve never made a U-turn since.”

In 2016, Bonhomme brought his nightlife savvy to Las Vegas, where he’s helped manage some of the city’s

most popular venues, including Rehab, Omnia and Wet Republic. For the past two years he’s taken on the general manager role at CliQue Bar & Lounge at The Cosmopolitan. As the manager, Bonhomme oversees all operations and employees at CliQue—a venue that is a laid-back lounge during the day, but when night comes it turns into a dope hot spot with live DJs.

It’s evident when speaking with Bonhomme that he’s a hard worker and embraces the successful career he’s built for himself in the nightlife industry.

Costa limoncello and pineapple. The egg white atop the light coral drink makes it as pretty as it is good-tasting. You’ll find a curated list of wine by the glass and bottle, as well as a short list of beers.

Try the peas and burrata to start, a delicately flavored purée with soft burrata and arugula dressed in a lemon vinaigrette. Traditional caprese with heirloom tomatoes, beef carpaccio with

tru e pecorino and a tender meatball with whipped ricotta and basil will whet the appetite.

The pizza here is perfectly shareable and makes a good prelude to the remainder of the meal. Munch on spicy salami, margherita, prosciutto and the seasonal mushroom with two types of mushrooms, asparagus and lemon. And please do shave Parmesan all over the top!

It may be hard to make a pasta choice, but you can’t go wrong with the alla vodka, lightly sauced lumache with a touch of Calabrian chili adding a little kick. Entrées include many classic dishes done exceptionally well. Standouts include the signature chicken Parm, a massive, breaded chicken breast covered in pomodoro, mozzarella and basil; salmon piccata accented with lemon and capers; and grilled ribeye, an 18-ounce cut that comes with salsa verde, a delightful condiment with a complex mix of ingredients.

If you really love fish, the grilled branzino is sure to capture your attention, and until it’s gone, you won’t care about much else.

Finished with that branzino? Then take a break while dessert is prepared— an espresso or a house-made limoncello is a good move. As well as a classic limoncello, you’ll find such varieties as berrycello, depending on the season. And we’re sure you ordered the hazelnut budino, although it may be plated up on the dessert platter, with two other choices like the tiramisu and the Italian pound cake. The budino is incredible, and that is from someone who typically is not a budino fan. Bittersweet chocolate pudding is topped with chopped hazelnut, adding crunch and flavor. Absolutely fabulous!

The Chicks hatch a Vegas residency at Planet Hollywood Resort’s Bakkt Theater

The Chicks arrive at Planet Hollywood Resort for their Six Nights in Vegas residency just days after being scheduled to appear at Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday concert in Los Angeles, and on the heels of Miranda Lambert’s final stretch of headlining dates at Bakkt Theater (formerly known as Zappos Theater). It’s the first phase of The Chicks’ live itinerary after a triumphant return to the concert stage last year, with a summer tour to follow. The trio has flown high and experienced career lows, but their appeal has proven to be enduring and capable of weathering the stormiest skies.

industry domination. That goal was achieved in a few short years when their major label debut, Wide Open Spaces, hit the top spot on Billboard’s country album charts, spun off three No.1 country singles and reached No. 4 on the pop album chart.

As the Dixie Chicks, they won just about every major music award they were nominated for and won Grammys for Best Country Album and Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal (for “There’s Your Trouble”). Follow-up album Fly cemented their position in the country music firmament, garnering Grammys for both the album and track “Ready to Run.”

The three bandmates changed the landscape of country music and paved the way for subsequent pop crossover artists. Audiences became feverishly excited at their shows, and the entire demographic of country listeners skewed younger as Maines, Maguire and Strayer became inspirations to legions of female fans. Maguire’s fiddle-playing, Strayer’s banjo-picking and Maines’ guitar-strumming set them apart from vocal artists and created a template that Taylor Swift would take to new heights.

The transformation from Dixie

Chicks to The Chicks began when Maines famously let her feelings about President Bush and the impending Iraq War be known during a 2003 concert in England. The backlash to her critical comments by conservative country listeners came quickly after they were reported by The Guardian, and although Maines initially apologized, she retained her staunch anti-war position.

While their reputation suffered in the country music industry, The Chicks continued to be embraced by mainstream pop audiences. In 2006, they released Taking the Long Way, which took top Grammy album honors for both Album of the Year and Best Country Album. Maines’ defiance was best expressed in album’s first single “Not Ready to Make Nice,” which won three Grammys including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

The Chicks, as they’ve been known since 2020, were back. A tour in support of latest album Gaslighter proved that while they lost some cursory fans their core audience grew with them and positioned them for Six Nights in Vegas. Whatever they hatch at Planet Hollywood Resort will feel like a new era for country music’s greatest contemporary trio.

Bill Burr brings his rage against the machine to Las Vegas performances

When Bill Burr is not busy being a family man, he indulges in three passions: comedy, drums and flying. He’s a household name when it comes to stand-up, which he’s been devoted to since making his debut on March 2, 1992. An irascible stage presence, like Don Rickles without an insult monomania, Burr created a blueprint for comedians to build their brands through podcasting while remaining authentic and reverent toward comics of previous generations.

Burr started his Monday Morning podcast in May 2007. It’s mostly him “checkin’ in with ya” and rambling about whatever is on his mind. It allows Burr to run o the excess energy that motivates him to perform, but it paved the way for Marc Maron, Joe Rogan and Kevin Hart to create successful podcasts. It also enabled him to start the All Things Comedy network with Al Madrigal in 2012.

In the introduction to a February episode of Fly on the Wall, Dana Carvey and David Spade’s podcast, Carvey described guest Burr as having an alpha power onstage while still coming o as “kind of cuddly.” It’s an apt description for the dentist’s son born in Greater Boston. Burr has street attitude that probably helped him survive high school, but he has a way of putting audiences at ease while executing his style of rage humor.

political correctness or social subterfuges. He thinks canceling dead people who can’t defend themselves is weak. He notoriously stood up to a rowdy Philadelphia crowd in 2008 that booed during his friend Dom Irrera’s set, counting down the minutes as he delivered as many Philly insults as he could think of.

That viral moment elevated Burr’s standup stature, and he was able to control his own public image through his podcast amidst talking sports, dropping F-bombs and cracking himself up. Burr’s clout grew to the point where he began being cast in major fi lm and television productions such as The King of Staten Island and The Mandalorian

He still fears the floor dropping out from under his career, which is rational considering the ups and downs of the comedians that came before him. His anxieties may have

been alleviated somewhat when he became the fi rst comedian to sell out Fenway Park in August. Burr sold out shows at Madison Square Garden, the Royal Albert Hall and the Los Angeles Forum prior to packing the historic Boston ballpark.

He has an open invitation from Al Jourgensen to play drums with Ministry in concert, which he can fly himself to as an experienced helicopter pilot. Steve O, who credits Burr with shaping his approach to stand-up, opens his latest tour with video depicting himself holding on to a rope ladder unfurled from a copter flown by Burr.

At 54, Burr has spoken about slowing down his pace, but don’t believe him. The comedian most respected by other comedians has a deep well of authentic, rage-powered material left to draw on.

These experiences are quintessential Vegas musts and definitely contribute to a joyful and fulfilling visit. But what if that’s not enough? You may not know it, but away from the Strip, Vegas is a mini-paradise for the everyday adventurer, whether you’re venturing out during those brutal, triple-digit temperatures or during the cooler months. There are mountains to climb, trails to explore, a man-made lake to admire and nature to observe. Of course, we fully expect that you’ll be taking advantage of all the Strip has to o er. That’s why you’re here! But if you really want to stretch your legs and see a side of the Southwest you’ve never seen before, take a chance and do something new—call that Über or Lyft, head to REI for some supplies, and get o the grid. You may never want to leave!

Start o your morning by exploring one of the many hiking trails in Las Vegas. Near Lake Mead, right outside of Boulder City, is the Historic Railroad Trail (nps.gov), an easy 7.5-mile trek (round trip) that follows the old railway that transported machinery and supplies to Hoover Dam during its construction. Along the path, you’ll pass through five massive tunnels, which helps measure the scope of the dam’s construction and

shows how the project was a major feat of engineering. Another great option for easy hiking trails is Lone Mountain Park. There’s a flat-ground desert trail that loops around the tiny mountain and o ers great views of the city. But if you’d like to make that view even better, climb to the mountain’s peak. If you decide to check out either of those hiking areas, remember that the weather may reach warmer digits, so bring a lot of water and don’t forget your sunscreen. If

you’d rather not deal with any heat, however, Mount Charleston is a much cooler refuge, with temperatures nearly 20 degrees lower than in the valley. It’s home to the popular Mary Jane Falls and Cathedral Rock trails, to name a few, which are a little tougher and rockier than the previously mentioned trails, but the crisp mountain air and stunning scenery—as well as seeing a side of Las Vegas that you probably didn’t know existed— will make it all worth it.

If hiking doesn’t appeal to you, but you still want to observe and enjoy nature, that’s not a problem. The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve (cityofhenderson.com) is a tranquil place to view resident birds like roadrunners and verdin, as well as nesting American avocets and black-necked stilts. Go to Floyd Lamb State Park and you might wonder if you’re still in Las Vegas. The small oasis has lush vegetation, a quaint ranch and a few fishing ponds filled with ducks and geese— you’ll even come across a few peacocks. But if you want to see some nature without leaving your car, take a drive along the 13-mile scenic loop at Red Rock Canyon

(redrockcanyonlv.org), where you’ll be able to view unique red rock formations and wideopen desert landscapes. If you feel compelled to leave the cool air-conditioning of your car, however, there are several observation points and overlooks where you can walk around and further explore the canyon.

In speaking of canyons, while it’s not Vegas, the Grand Canyon is too close to not be part of a Southern Nevada experience. If you don’t know where to start, try Grand Canyon West ( grandcanyonwest.com). They o er a one-stop shop of ways to view the Grand Canyon and its surrounding areas, such as walking along the glass-paneled Skywalk or taking a helicopter tour. There’s also a convenient shuttle service that circulates through Guano Point, Eagle Point and Hualapai Ranch, allowing you to explore the West Rim at your own pace.
