New and Improved

By now, many of you are well aware of the excitement surrounding Las Vegas. We might soon be getting a Major League Baseball team, F1 is coming later this year, and we are hosting the Super Bowl in 2024. In addition, U2 is launching a mini-residency at the soon-to-open Sphere. We doubt there will be an empty hotel room when all this goes down. (Which reminds us: Maybe make those reservations now?)

But if you’re here this week, fear not: There’s still plenty to get excited about, and this week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine heavily focuses on some of the newest o erings.

Let’s start with shows! Fans of Whose Line Is It Anyway? will no doubt remember Colin Mochrie and his tremendous improv skills. And he’s co-created a new show at Harrah’s, Hyprov: Improv Under Hypnosis, where hypnotist Asad Mecci puts volunteers in a trance before an improv master guides them through a performance. Get ready for a truly unique experience (“Expanding Your Mind,” p. 34).

How about attractions? Take the whole family to Madame Tussauds Las Vegas at The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian, which added a brand-new wax figure this week: Megan Thee Stallion (“Good News,” p. 21).

Fan of a good cocktail or spirit? Check out our Q&A with Bar Rescue’s Jon Ta er, who recently unveiled Jon Ta er’s Browned Butter Bourbon, which will be available all over the valley and the Strip (“From Bars to Bourbon—and Beyond,” p. 14).

Those who come during the summer months for both nightlife and daylight fun will want to check out our roundup of the latest o erings on and o the Strip (“Drinks, Parties, Music & More,” p. 24).

From new to established world-class fun, you’ll fi nd it all in Las Vegas Magazine. Enjoy your week!

Flavor Exploration

Martin Yan’s Las Vegas Strip restaurant draws inspiration from multiple countries

Whether you’re stopping in for a lunch, happy hour or a more relaxed dinner, M.Y. Asia has got you covered. The pan-Asian restaurant in Horseshoe Las Vegas opened a few months ago with PBS star and chef Martin Yan presenting a range of dishes inspired by his travels.

Inside the dining area you’ll find a range of décor from several Asian cultures, a modest dining area, bar and open kitchen. That kitchen is busy at all times, with prep work and noodle making— and that’s a skill that’s actually showcased during dinner hours, so pay attention!

I checked in at lunch recently, and of course, once seated, ordered a cocktail—the M.Y. Paloma, made with Patron silver tequila, Yuzuri liqueur, agave, and pink grapefruit. It makes for a light sip, as does the Lychee in Paradise, enlivened with Grey Goose La Poire vodka, elderflower, lemon and lychee juices and champagne.

Representing Vietnamese cuisine is the spring roll, a giant of a bite with vermicelli rice noodles, shrimp, pork, veggies and mint wrapped up in rice paper. It’s a super-fresh appetizer served with a tasty peanut sauce, and it can

be made vegetarian. Other good starters are the pork pot stickers with house vinegar sauce and a green papaya salad bursting with fresh veg.

The lunch menu has four soups showcased, from classic egg drop soup to a Taiwanese braised beef soup. Classic fried rice is available in a choice of proteins—barbecue pork, chicken, beef or shrimp, but you’ll also find crab fried rice and the Street Hawker Pad Thai with shrimp, chicken, tofu, veggies and egg, topped off with crushed peanuts and lime. The pork chow fun has wide noodles and a light stir fry sauce, and is a pretty picture with colorful veggies accenting the top.

There are dishes inspired by several countries on the entrées section, from Mongolian beef to kung pao shrimp. Black pepper beef is served with beech mushrooms, while Thai yellow curry chicken is filled with chicken, potatoes and carrots in a rich sauce.

And if the lychee panna cotta is available, do squeeze it in. It’s creamy and has a delightful, light flavor. –Nina King

From Bars to Bourbon —and Beyond

Bar Rescue ’s Jon Taffer creates his own spirit (in a kitchen!) and launches it in his adopted hometown of Las Vegas

You could call Jon Taffer the guru of bars. After a 40-year career in the hospitality industry, Taffer shares his knowledge through his popular reality show, Bar Rescue, where he helps others achieve their goals of running a successful bar and restaurant. Recently, Taffer released his own unique spirit, Taffer’s Browned Butter Bourbon, and launched it in his adopted hometown of Las Vegas. The entrepreneur, who has many projects planned, spoke with Las Vegas Magazine ’s Kiko Miyasato about the new bourbon and what’s on tap for the rest of 2023.

How did Taffer’s Browned Butter Bourbon come to be?

When I created the product, we created it in one of my restaurants. I was cooking with browned butter one day and I got the idea to pour it in a plastic sous vide cooking bag with whiskey. Then I cooked it in boiling water for a few minutes, took it out, put it in a walk-in refrigerator and the butter coagulated on top. I skimmed the top, poured it through a coffee filter and brown butter bourbon was born. Then we put it into a cocktail, and we started to sell over a thousand a month—it was

called the Campfire. It was crazy; it was so successful. And we were like, “We have to bring this to market.”

Why was it important for you to launch this brand in Las Vegas?

I live here. I know this city really, really well. I love this town. I believe in this town. I believe if you can succeed in this city, you can succeed anywhere. Las Vegas is a showplace for the world and the amount of people that could try my product here is really powerful.

What are people going to experience when they drink the bourbon?

The vanilla really hits you. The best way to drink it: Put the glass on your chin and let the aroma come up to your nose; that’s an incredible way to taste it. You’ll smell coffee, caramel, butter, with notes of vanilla.

Are you a bourbon drinker?

I am a bourbon drinker. I love bourbon because it’s the spirit of America. I’m a pretty patriotic kind of person. In the late 1800s, by an actual act of Congress, bourbon was made the official spirit of the

14 | 6.25.23 Las Vegas Magazine Spotlight Courtesy photo

United States. It’s as American as American can be. Whenever we export bourbon to other countries, we export America as well. I love bourbon as a flavor and as a product; I love its history.

You mentioned that this bourbon is not just for drinking but also for cooking.

My friend Michael Mina told me recently that he’s marinating steaks with it. I just tasted a browned butter (bourbon) cookie that’s out of this world. We’ve tasted a browned butter bourbon risotto that was to die for! Man, was it delicious. We’re finding that the browned butter flavor is very culinary. I say with a smile but it’s true—this is probably the only bourbon in the world that was actually invented in a kitchen, so it has a real culinary connection.

Aside from the release of your new bourbon, what’s on tap for you for the rest of the year?

I start Bar Rescue season nine in August. I’m really excited about that. We’re shooting a bunch of episodes here in Vegas. It’s always fun for me to shoot in my hometown, of course. Then Taffer’s Tavern—we’re close to making an announcement here in Vegas. I don’t want to jinx it (laughs). We’re opening Taffer’s Taverns right now in Alabama, in Atlanta we’re opening our third and we’re also looking to open in other markets as we speak. It’s been a good year and we’re keeping busy.

Mixing It Up

Comedy pairing at The Venetian results in plenty of laughs

David Spade and Nikki Glaser, two of stand-up’s biggest stars, could easily fill any room on the Strip by themselves, but they are currently serving as a onetwo comedy punch on the Las Vegas Strip, and if their initial appearance at The Venetian Theatre is any indication, this is a pairing that could continue for some time.

Glaser starts thing off with a bawdy bang, launching into everything from role-playing with her partner (including the appearance of an unexpected video game character) to the effects of aging

and the illusion that any of us will look like Jennifer Aniston or Jennifer Lopez if we use the products they endorse. Glaser’s act is no holds barred, at times approaching a level of obscenity that will perk up the ears of even the most jaded audiences.

Not that Glaser’s audience was jaded, or that her obscenity wasn’t hilarious. Quite the opposite on both counts, in fact. Her set was a brilliant setup for Spade, whose mellow, laidback style is the perfect foil for Glaser’s hyper-aware persona.

Spade makes the most of the silent spaces between bits, often picking up on audience activity or the odd word heard here and there. He even notices the spotlight operator, zinging a few humorous thoughts his (or her) way. It’s all done in a good-natured, humorous way. Here’s to many more appearances by this dynamic duo. –Ken Miller

Don’t Skip Breakfast

Start your day with an elevated morning meal

From breakfast to brunch and lunch, you’re going to find a lot to appreciate at Sadelle’s Café, an import from New York City that has been a huge hit ever since arriving in Las Vegas in 2019.

Breakfast options all stress highest-quality ingredients and fresh flavors. You’ll definitely want to start your experience here with a bagel (your choice between plain, sesame, everything and cinnamon raisin), as Sadelle’s is famous for them—they are produced in-house under the direction of executive sous chef Minesh Mehta. They’re incredibly light and fluffy, a result of the amount of time spent proofing the dough. In addition to cream cheese, be sure to get all the accoutrements, from salmon and cucumbers to tomatoes and capers. Soooo good!

One of Sadelle’s biggest sellers is the avocado toast, and for good reason: Avocado is mixed with salt, pepper and lemon juice, on top of which pickled red onions and sliced Fresno peppers and avocado are piled. When you add in sea salt, lemon zest, cilantro and poppy

seeds, you have a flavor bomb that you’ll be reluctant to share.

No matter how many times you’ve had French toast, you have never tried anything like Sadelle’s version. Whole loaves of brioche are cut and dried for 24 hours. After that, the pieces are soaked in Sadelle’s signature French toast batter for another 24 hours. After being fried at a low temperature and sliced, each half is caramelized on top. If this doesn’t fit the definition of “comfort food,” we’re not sure what will.

Caviar is used liberally on the menu; enjoy it on any dish (for an additional price). I personally recommend the Bellagio Benedict, topped with Royal Baika caviar from Petrossian.

Make sure to plan a return trip for brunch or lunch. The real signature here is the fried chicken, so delicious with its accompaniment of truffle honey, coleslaw and French fries. But as with breakfast, everything on Sadelle’s menu is worth your time. –Ken

Sweet Views

Get a taste of the Southwest

If you want to explore one of the wonders of the natural world, you’ll find an excellent place within a short drive of Las Vegas. Grand Canyon West features a variety of adventures and one of the most unique attractions around.

Start with great views at Guano Point and Eagle Point, which are included with admission to Grand Canyon West. Then add on the impressive Skywalk if you want—once you take a trek on the U-shaped glass ridge, you’ll feel pretty brave. That’s because the Skywalk is a cantilevered glass walkway that offers some intense views of the West Rim, both out and underfoot. For other perspectives on the canyon, book a helicopter and pontoon package, where you take a helicopter down to the canyon floor for a float on a pontoon.

West of the rim is Peach Springs, Ariz., the capital of the Hualapai nation, where you can catch a whitewater rafting adventure on the Colorado River or grab a bite to eat in the Diamond Creek restaurant. –Nina King

Good News

Music and business icon gets her own wax figure on the Strip

She’s one of the hottest artists on the planet at the moment, and Megan Thee Stallion’s momentum continues unabated in Las Vegas, with the unveiling of a wax likeness at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas.

The three-time Grammy winner, with hits like “Big Ole Freak,” “Hot Girl Summer” and “Body,” not to mention “Savage (Remix)” and “WAP” (which both hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100), has now been immortalized with a newsprint catsuit and matching cowboy hat with fingerless gloves (the outfit was

inspired by a photo shoot to promote her album Good News).

It’s actually one of two wax figures—one was also unveiled at Madame Tussauds New York, and features the performer posed on her side, laying down in a diamante bikini and matching cowboy hat, gauntlets and choker.

It took a team of 20 artists six months to create the two figures, which included capturing more than 200 measurements and matching colors for her eyes, hair and skin. Ten layers of oil-based paints

were applied, and real human hair was applied, including eyebrows and eyelashes.

The honor was not lost on the superstar. “I feel like people always ask me when was the moment you knew you were famous? This is the moment!” she said in a prepared statement. “There are two versions of me in the most famous wax museum on the planet. Like who am I?!? Them!” –Ken Miller

Among the countless thrills found on the Las Vegas Strip, few shows have captivated audiences like Michael Jackson ONE by Cirque du Soleil. Over 10 years and more than 4,000 performances, “MJ ONE” has etched its name into the thriving landscape of Vegas entertainment.

By the time it debuted at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on June 29, 2013, Cirque du Soleil had already carved out a sensational reputation with long-running favorites

Mystère and “O”, and the pressure to build on that legacy was felt by everyone on the MJ ONE creation team.

“It seemed unattainable,” says Igor Zambelli, a slackline artist who’s been with the show since day one. “Now looking back, we’ve really come a long way to create this history for ourselves. We’re part of continuing the legacy of Michael Jackson, and the amazing history of Cirque in Las Vegas.” Today, the show draws visitors five nights a week from around the

world, making it one of the bestselling shows in Las Vegas.

The dedication to craft that defined Michael Jackson’s career is apparent in every aspect of MJ ONE, from monumental songs and dance, to groundbreaking music videos, to his unmistakable influence on the world of fashion.

“The costumes are so iconic,” says Wardrobe Supervisor Veronica Vazquez. “You expect that when you see a Michael Jackson show. You can’t

do Smooth Criminal without seeing an element of that pinstripe suit.”

In fact, each outfit is painstakingly designed to pay homage to King of Pop’s sense of style. From the crystalembellished glove, to his fedora to rhinestone white socks, every thread of MJ ONE’s wardrobe embodies his timeless fashion statements.

This immense respect for details –amplified by the Michael Jackson ONE cast, crew and creators, brings the show to life. Thousands of elements, from

intricate costumes to props, are brought together to make a production that defies expectations. Now in its 10th year, this dynamic collaboration between the music and legacy of Michael Jackson and the extraordinary production and acrobatics of Cirque du Soleil stands on its own. With an electrifying fusion of acrobatics, dance, and visuals that embody the showmanship of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson ONE continues to astound and inspire visitors from throughout the world.

Manager brings style and substance to his role

It’s not hard to spot David Bell, operations manager for Proper Eats Food Hall and Easy’s Cocktail Lounge at Aria— just look for the best-dressed man walking the floor. When this man wears a suit, he wears a suit—decorating in themes with the accessories to match, from his shoes, ties and watches to pocket squares, brooches and tie pins.

But it’s not just about dressing to the nines for Bell; what’s more important is the job he does in those dapper duds. “Have a connection with your team,” he says. “When I became management, I

wanted to change the narrative. I feel like sometimes people feel just because they have a title that they’re entitled to tell people to do things. Whereas, I can’t send my people to war if I’m not on the front lines with them. If you know your manager is (helping), then you know you have a support system behind you.”

Bell has a long work history—he’s been a cook, food runner and pastry chef, worked in fueling and baggage at the airport and, finally, moved into management roles at pools, restaurants and casino floors. Before he joined Proper

Crossroads Kitchen specializes in a fine-dining vegan experience

The plant-based diet has evolved to the point where it’s hard to find a restaurant that doesn’t offer vegan options. (Even fast food joints are getting in on the action!) But on the Las Vegas Strip, only one restaurant offers a menu that’s 100% plant-based: Crossroads Kitchen, an outpost of the Los Angeles hot spot that’s a favorite of tourists and locals alike (and even a few celebrities).

The menu from chef Tal Ronnen and executive chef Paul Zlatos features items inspired by the cuisine of Italy and the Mediterranean, served in an immaculately appointed room for a true fine-dining experience. It’s the perfect setting for a signature cocktail, and Crossroads offers a wide variety. The Pineapple Palooza features Dwayne Johnson’s Teremana tequila, pineapple juice, lime juice, orange liqueur and jalapeño syrup, while the Blueberry Shuffle combines Hera the Dog vodka, Italicus liqueur, blueberry thyme syrup and lemon juice. Bourbon fans will love the 4 O’Clock Blues, a twist on an Old-Fashioned with Frey Ranch Whiskey, orange and lemon juice, brown sugar, ginger and sage syrup. Appetizers are a taste sensation. The sweet corn custard looks like flan, but delivers a salty, slightly spicy kick with herb oil and the addition of a chive “chicharron.” Grilled Romano beans have an umami tang thanks to the use of miso along with a vegan bagna cauda and Parmesan (make sure to drizzle this

with lemon first). And chestnut foie gras is a real surprise.

A highlight of the menu, stuffed zucchini blossoms are filled with vegan cheese, deep-fried in cottonseed oil and served with marinara. Trust us: This is one dish you’ll fight over with your dinner companion.

There are plenty of delicious pizzas and pastas at Crossroads Kitchen, including the truffle mushroom bianco, with a puffy, perfect crust and the roasted corn ravioli, so substantial and flavored with zucchini, cherry tomatoes and basil. It pairs quite nicely with the eggplant skirt steak, shaped to look like the real thing and served with a truffle potato, a chunk of roasted garlic and brandy peppercorn sauce for some serious flavor accents.

Fans of baked Alaska will definitely want to check this version out, with pineapple sorbet for ice cream and caramelized coconut instead of meringue. Or try the raspberry chocolate bar for an extremely pleasant end to an excellent experience.

Be the next ‘Employee of the Moment’ at labyrinth-like fantasy playground Omega Mart

Las Vegas o ers plenty of adventures and immersive attractions, but few provide opportunities to experience being an employee. Becoming a casino dealer requires education and verification. Chefs must have culinary experience, while DJs need some kind of proof that they can raise the roof. To become a temporary employee of Omega Mart, a subsidiary of the Dram corporation, one only needs a Boop Card.

Boop Cards are purchasable upon entry to the innocuous-looking grocery story inside the main mall of AREA15, the immersive entertainment district west of the Strip. There is much to peruse as a shopper. Nontoxic Gender Fluid soft drinks blend the taste of lavender and lemon. Room-temperature milk provides an alternative to chilled dairy products. Frozen drinks come in Primordial Ooze and Angel Slime flavors. The deli, “where family meats freedom,” o ers sculpted cheese blocks and Meat Head samples that are “processed by pasture-trained, amateur meatierologists.”

No training is required for the Omega Access Cards that are keys to stations throughout the premises, although saying “Boop!” while inserting them is encouraged. On-the-job training, company confidential data and authorization to use restricted equipment are just some of the privileges that come with a “Boop Card.” Learn to soothe, deflect and redirect dissatisfied customers with Omega Attitude.

It also provides an introduction to

the Dram family. More about the enigmatic owners of Omega Mart can be discovered via semi-hidden passages to the labyrinth-like corporate headquarters. Turn into an inconspicuous hallway, head up a flight of stairs, poke a head inside a camping tent on display or pull the right refrigerator door and enter a labyrinth-like alternative universe, ready to be explored.

This is where Omega Mart becomes interactive Mega Art. The stairs lead to an employee breakroom where one can be bestowed with “Employee of the Moment” status before discovering a passageway to corporate headquarters and research and development areas. If a phone rings, answer it. If a computer keyboard lies in front of a desktop monitor, type a few keystrokes.

There are many signs of reclusive (or missing?) corporate head Walter Dram’s presence, as well as his daughter and heir-apparent Cecelia.

Bits of information can become clues to what appears to be a conspiracy involving the Dram family. Check the file cabinets in the Herman Resources department for translucent plates that slide into a hard drive and give deep background on personnel.

Or just roam through the area from room to room and marvel at the multitude of immersive installations. Light, sound, visual design and abstract

concepts created by cutting-edge artists are around every corner, in every hallway and alcove. Stairways lead to interactive audio contraptions. Tunnels lead to di erent rooms or a short, rope-guided rock climb.

By the end of the experience, it should be self-evident whether one has what it takes to live the Dram Dream. Not everyone can be an Omega Mart employee, but anyone can be part of Omega Mart in a consumer sense with the purchase of crisis-averting Emergency Clams, Dehydrated Water or a Ridiculous Inflatable Swan-Thing.

A very di erent kind of Las Vegas show opened earlier this month at Harrah’s Showroom, and although it’s definitely something new, it feels like a natural combination of two familiar entertainment elements, tailor-made for the Strip.

Hyprov: Improv Under Hypnosis is onstage at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and it’s exactly what it sounds like—a comedy cavalcade of trained improv professionals spiked with a hypnotist ushering in unpredictable audience interaction. The genesis of the show (pronounced “hip-rawv”) came when master hypnotist and entertainer Asad Mecci decided to take improv classes at Chicago’s famed Second City “to get better at stage craft and performance,” he says.

“What I realized was (that) they didn’t want us to consciously construct the comedy, to try to be funny, they wanted unconscious functioning. They would do all kinds of experiments and games to get that part of the mind engaged,” he continues, “and I thought to

myself, ‘Wait—is it possible to take somebody with no improv experience and hypnotize them and turn them into a great improvisor?’ The answer has been a resounding yes.”

The next step in Mecci’s experimental process was to pair hypnotized audience members with acclaimed international improvisors such as the show’s co-creator, Colin Mochrie—who you’ve certainly seen weave comedic magic on Whose Line Is It Anyway?—and create something sensational, live onstage.

“I’m always trying to find ways to make my work di cult for myself,” says Mochrie. “Over the years of working on this, I’ve learned so much about hypnosis, and I think it’s made me a better improvisor because I don’t have a shorthand with these people (audience members) like I do with the guys I’ve worked with on TV. I really have to listen. Sometimes if you’re not listening, a beautiful moment that could be expanded on could quite easily leave. So it’s been a lot of fun, very challenging and exciting.”

Mochrie is rotating in and out of the cast of performers in Hyprov, along with other renowned comic minds such as Stephanie Courtney, the actress who plays Flo in those great Progressive Insurance commercials, and Jonathan Mangum, the longtime improv collaborator of Wayne Brady. No two shows are ever the same, and plenty of Las Vegas shows make that claim, but it’s obviously true with Hyprov, considering that the cast includes di erent audience members every

night, “performing” while hypnotized.

“The audience participation is, I think, something totally di erent from any other show out there,” Mochrie says. “The quality of improv is amazing. I’m still shocked after doing it all this time to see these people become expert improvisors, pure improvisors, just reacting to what we give them. They’re just truly

living in the moment, not going for laughs, just going with the scene.”

The show is worth investigation as a fascinating sociological experiment, but more importantly, it’s endlessly entertaining. For 90 minutes, Mecci brings 20 volunteers onstage to be hypnotized, and the most receptive individuals with join the improv all-stars for the rest of the show,

completely under his spell for a wild, riotous ride.

“It’s a comedy high-wire act,” Mecci says. “Every night, we don’t know what’s going to happen onstage, but we always find one superstar. The audience is just in disbelief when they see these people, regular Joes doing extraordinary things.”

observes a decade of dance and thriller nights in celebration of the King of Pop

AS THE IDIOM STATES, time flies when you’re having fun. For Kati Renaud, senior artistic director for Michael Jackson ONE by Cirque du Soleil, the past decade leading up to this month’s 10th anniversary of the show has been a whirlwind moving at the velocity of one of the King of Pop’s spinning dance moves. O cial anniversary observations take place Thursday, June 29, beginning with an afternoon pop-up presentation in Mandalay Bay’s lobby that will include original cast members.

“It’s a very dear moment for many of us, even those of us who haven’t been here for 10 years,” she says. “We’ll have our regular two shows, 7 p.m. and 9:30, then after the second show we’ll have a celebration. We’re going to get together cast and crew, and we’re going to celebrate these amazing 10 years.”

It will be an emotional day for all involved.

“It’s going to be lovely,” says Renaud. “We’re all so passionate about what we do, but also about Michael Jackson. It’s going to be a really special day.”

The 10th anniversary comes two months before what would have been Jackson’s 65th birthday on Aug. 29. On that day, the legend’s estate, in conjunction with Cirque, will host a Sapphire Birthday Celebration in the theater, including a 10 a.m. brunch (reservations are required), a book signing of The King of Style: Dressing Michael Jackson by Michael Bush (open to the public), and a pre-show cast meet and greet. (You must have tickets to the Aug. 29 show to attend the last event.)

This is a time of reflection for Renaud and her colleagues, some of whom have been with the show since its creation phase under writer-director Jamie King in 2012.

“To know that I was going to be pursuing this production about an artist who made music I grew up with that really touched me

and impacted me and influenced me, I was thrilled,” says Renaud. “We’ve come so far in 10 years. We’re always striving to make our shows better, stronger. We’re tweaking and changing and adjusting. … It’s part of our DNA in Cirque to always better the product, better the experience.”

That’s part of what keeps people coming back. Without Michael Jackson ONE for fans to make pilgrimages to, Jackson’s profile would not have remained nearly as high since 2013. There was a touring show also created by King, Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour by Cirque du Soleil, and MJ the Musical opened in Broadway’s Neil Simon Theatre in December 2021, but the Vegas show is in a class by itself. The spectacle, iconography, special e ects, music and sound design (there are right, left and center speakers in every seat) are unparalleled.

It’s also both adrenalizing and a ecting. The pacing as four facets of Jackson’s spirit are personified and face life-changing challenges is seamless, with incredible displays of agility and athleticism, and the choreography is stunning. The poignancy of some segments, such as when the Moon Goddess floats above the stage during “Stranger in Moscow,” induce chills and are unforgettable—as unforgettable as the music and legacy of The Gloved One himself.

Be prepared for an audience participation trick right out of the gate when attending Limitless, Shin Lim’s close-up magic showcase inside The Mirage Theatre. Spoiler alert: It involves cards. Although Lim resists his act being referred to as “magic,” as in supernatural defiance of physics, he can’t argue that it’s not magical. He draws too many “oohs” and “aahs” from fans who were introduced to his spectacular brand of sleight-of-hand on America’s Got Talent and Penn & Teller: Fool Us. Once they are seated and see the plastic-wrapped rectangles in front of them, they are fully drawn into Lim’s universe.

That universe was created when Lim exchanged a future playing 88 piano keys for one that orbited around decks of 52 playing cards. Lim was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome while preparing for a career in music, a plot point in his life that is woven into the biographical thread run-

ning through the show. The stage set-up is simple: piano, table, crystal-clear jumbo screen above the stage, mentalist Colin Cloud, and Lim’s graceful hands.

Scottish-born Cloud, himself an AGT alumni, transcends mentalist tropes with a rapid-fire delivery and razor-sharp timing. He keeps the show moving quickly with segments that contrast with Lim’s ethereal flow and graceful delivery. One might think carpal tunnel would have hampered Lim’s ability to pull o amazing feats of dexterity, but if he’s feeling any pain, he hides it well.

The ability to manage pain became crucial once the emotive pianist was bitten by the sleight-of-hand bug. Witnessing one trick, the slip force, got him hooked. A medical sabbatical from music study before he embarked on a sustained period of 20 hours a week of practice gave him a chance to refine his approach to close-up magic and

develop his own tricks as well as garner a YouTube following. Increasing momentum led to his first International Federation of Magic Societies (FISM) convention in 2012. He came in sixth at the world championship held at the triannual convention, then won first place in 2015.

Television audiences were introduced to Lim that year when he appeared on Fool Us, clearly earning the respect of Penn Jillette and Teller. Like Teller, Lim creates mystique by opting to use few words, if any. The approach works great for international audiences but had to change once Lim’s path directed toward Vegas. He worked on his banter while competing on AGT during the show’s 13th season. By the time he arrived at The Mirage in October 2019, he was a polished pro who had audiences practically eating out of his hands.

Lim draws some of the most enthusiastic audiences on the Strip, creating an atmosphere that causes the proceedings at Limitless to end in standing ovations. It’s like being part of a big club, with Lim demonstrating his skill to the music of Sting or making cards disappear, only to re-emerge from his mouth with a pu of smoke. He might be the No. 1 close-up magic performer in the world, a virtuoso demonstrating the art of illusion in contemporary style like no one else can. ticketmaster.com

INTO OMEGA MART

THE MIND-BENDING WORLD OF LAS VEGAS’ MEOW WOLF OUTPOST

Putting your finger on Meow Wolf’s Omega Mart is nearly impossible. It’s a transportive, maximalist art installation, rooted in the foundation of a dense, explorative narrative. It’s a place to play and a place to study. It’s the anchor experience at Area15 and Meow Wolf’s largest installation to date, totaling 52,000 square feet. Omega Mart’s art director, Spencer Olsen, describes it as “a psychedelic sci-fi mystery that invites you to investigate as an in-world participant … or a big, fun, explorable art exhibit!” It’s utopian and somewhat dystopian. It’s an experience that refuses to be pinned down—one in which you’re allowed to stumble into a world that’s adjacent to yours, but also lightyears away. Here’s a topline look at the multidimensional environments that beg to be explored, and then explored again.

THE STORY

As you travel through Omega Mart, a rich and complex narrative begins to develop using audio, video and print media. The timeline of the story goes back hundreds of thousands of years, and breadcrumbs are scattered throughout the exhibit for visitors to uncover. Olsen recommends taking notes. “Everything is there for a reason, and we tried to add a lot of continuity so you can learn about something you find in one location elsewhere as you explore. If you think something might be a clue, take a picture.”

THE EXPERIENCE

Described as “America’s most exceptional grocery store,” walking into Omega Mart is the beginning of an adventure. “At Meow Wolf, we like to introduce visitors to our permanent exhibitions in a way that’s familiar, whether that be a seemingly average neighborhood home—as with the House of Eternal Return in Santa Fe— or a grocery store like we have with Omega Mart,” Olsen said. “From there, we present opportunities to expand one’s way of thinking, and new ways to experience otherwise average tasks and processes through the exploration of creative narratives.” As soon as you drop into Omega Mart, other exhibits come into focus, with four main anchor spaces in the exhibit.

Pro tip: Ask an Omega Mart employee about the VIP Package to enhance your experience.

OMEGA MART

A grocery shopping experience like no other.

IS IT SIMILAR TO THE HOUSE OF ETERNAL RETURN IN SANTA FE AND CONVERGENCE STATION IN DENVER?

Yes and no, but you’ll have to dive in to find out. “For the narrative deep divers, there are similarities,” Olsen said. “They are completely different artistically and experientially, but there is an underlying sub-fiction in stories about groups and entities with the ability to travel between worlds. There will be more revealed around these relationships between the stories in Denver and other future exhibits.”

DRAMCORP OFFICES

Dramcorp is the parent company to Omega Mart, and as you’ll soon find out, it’s hiding a secret.

Should I take the kids?

Yes, Omega Mart is a playground for everyone who enjoys mystery and mischief at any age.

SPACES WITHIN SPACES

Within each anchor space, there is an everunfolding cast of unique experiences, and choosing a favorite may be impossible. “It’s hard to pick one [favorite experience], so I’ll pick some distinct ones,” Olsen said. “Pulse, by Claudia Bueno, achieves something remarkable. I’ve heard someone describe it as ‘healing,’ which is as good of an experience as I can think of. Uploaded Ghosts, by Stephen Hendee, with musical collaboration by Beach House, feels like the artistic and emotional summit of the show,” Olsen said.
