Las Vegas just hosted Formula 1, and in February the city will host its first Super Bowl. For sure, it’s an exciting time for sports here. But for rodeo fans, the equivalent of F1 and Super Bowl LVIII is National Finals Rodeo, where the best of the best in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association compete for top honors in events such as bareback riding, team roping, barrel racing and, of course, bull riding. It’s 10 days of intense, fun activity, and the fans who flock to Thomas & Mack every year always leave with plenty of great stories to tell. Here at Las Vegas Magazine, we have great stories to tell as well—namely, where to head for the best entertainment when you’re not cheering for your favorite steer wrestler: • Live music. There’s amazing music to be heard all over the Las Vegas Strip, but one property in particular is jam-packed with options for fans of country: Golden Nugget, which hosts no fewer than eight best-selling artists (“Rodeo Country,” p. 34). Country fans will also want to head over to Resorts World Las Vegas, where Carrie Underwood continues her Reflection: The Las Vegas Residency (“Playing On,” p. 38). And Barry Manilow fans will be thrilled to learn the endlessly energetic entertainer is bringing his holiday show, A Very Barry Christmas, back to Westgate Las Vegas (“Jingles and Singles,” p. 21). • Dining. Nothing says “country” like a steakhouse, and we’ve collected some of the best cuts in town—and where to find them (“Great Steaks in Las Vegas,” p. 28). • Comedy. NFR favorite Rodney Carrington returns to MGM Grand (“Life’s a Rodeo,” p. 40), while Terry Fator brings his holiday show, A Very Terry Christmas, back to New York-New York (“Yule Laugh, Yule Cry,” p. 14). Enjoy the rodeo this week—and Las Vegas!

An Italian Haven Celebrity chef’s elegant Strip restaurant captures a coastal feel with fresh fish, pasta and meats The décor at Amalfi by Bobby Flay is gorgeous, with blue accents drawing you through the dining area to the fish market display in the rear. And it’s a working piece, where guests see the fish being cooked that night. Start with a drink! The Amalfi spritz, with Selim spumante, Cappelletti aperitivo and soda, makes for a light sip, while the mezcal Negroni, with Del Maguey mezcal, Cocchi Dopo Teatro amaro and Cappelletti apertivo, deepen the cocktail experience. Carry on with antipasti, where a shellfish fritto misto with shrimp, squid and asparagus is accented by a tomato aioli. It’s those small touches that really impress—the crispy squash blossoms have anchovy sauce, while the burrata and red pepper shine with the addition of Calabrian chili and hazelnut pesto. Charred lemon leaves lend a wonderful flavor to bufula mozzarella. Flat-iron crusted prawns, salmon carpaccio, tuna tartare and blue crab and eggplant meatballs in fra diavolo sauce are unusual dishes you’ll be glad you sampled. And eggplant al forno can’t go wrong at an Italian restaurant. There’s plenty of pasta available in some wildly differing forms, from agnolotti with Sungold tomato sauce and the pearl-like fregola, which swims in a saffron-tomato broth with Manila clams. Orecchiette (“little ears”) is served with a delicious eggplant Bolognese. The star of the show is the fish being displayed on ice in the huge, bright-blue, tiled basins. Choose one and get it roasted whole, accented by Meyer lemon and capers, red pepper and Calabrian chili pesto, or salsa verde. You can also get a fillet with the same choices. But you aren’t limited to fish. Chicken Parmigiano and several steak options like ribeye and filet mignon in various sizes are sure to satisfy larger appetites. Desserts are delicious, with the triple lemon cake among the best. But Bobby’s pistachio sundae is sure to garner plenty of fans, with pistachio gelato covered in dark chocolate sauce, vanilla crema, Amarena cherries and pistachio crunch—certainly worth saving room for! –Nina King Caesars Palace. 702.650.5965

Yule Laugh, Yule Cry

Ventriloquist and singer celebrates the holidays in a very special way

Even when he was first wowing audiences on his way to winning America’s Got Talent (and becoming one of the top headliners in Las Vegas for years to come), it was apparent that Terry Fator had an almost childlike wonder about him; despite his immense talent and the effect it had on others, he never seemed consumed by it all. It’s part of the man’s appeal through the years; it’s what helps him connect with audiences, and it’s what helps make his holiday shows, titled A Very Terry Christmas, so special and memorable. If you’re one of those TV viewers who chokes up every time Linus explains the true meaning of Christmas on A Charlie Brown Christmas, Fator’s show is tailor-made for you. That’s the feeling he’s going for in his show, not to mention the vibe of the old 1970s specials—the ones where Bing Crosby would welcome a host of celebrities into his home to sing songs and tell a joke or two. In this case, those celebrities are Fator’s puppets. And the jokes? Well, let’s just say the dads in the audience are going to be howling. Fans who recognize some of Fator’s more famous creations are in for a treat. Maynard Thompkins, who’s billed as the world’s greatest Elvis impersonator (even though he seems reluctant to ever actually sing) will belt out “Blue Christmas”; Julius, billed as a legend of the Apollo Theater, delivers a velvety smooth rendition of “Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel”; and Duggie Scott Walker, a slacker extraordinaire (get ready to hear the word “Dude!” about 100 times) takes on “The Night Before Christmas.” Winston the Impersonating Turtle, undeniably Fator’s cutest character ever, may just do his best Linus impersonation. Sprinkled throughout all the fun will be renditions of some of your favorite holiday classics, including “Winter Wonderland,” “Sleigh Ride” and “White Christmas.”–Ken Miller

Much Magic to Come High-spirited illusionist brings a sense of fun to residency I’ve seen Jen Kramer perform a handful of times—once, she even came to our offices at Greenspun Media Group!—and each time I come away marveling at her infectiously positive attitude. She just has a way of making you feel good about yourself. The fact that she’s an incredible sleight-of-hand magician almost feels like the icing on the cake. In the five years that she has performed The Magic of Jen Kramer at Westgate Las Vegas, she’s engendered nothing but goodwill among her fans

and from the property itself. And that goodwill has come back to Kramer at least 10 times over, both in the form of fans that return over and over again to see her show and in the announcement earlier this year that she would be extending her residency into the foreseeable future. “We are so proud of Jen and what she has accomplished over the last five years here,” said Cami Christensen, president and general manager of Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino.“Our guests and team members love

Jen, and we could not be more excited about extending her residency.” That means many more shows at Westgate with Kramer doing what she does best—interacting with audiences as she manipulates cards, makes drinks appear as if from nowhere, bringing smiles to the faces of numerous volunteers and generally making everyone feel just a bit better than they did coming in. –Ken Miller Westgate Las Vegas, 5+, westgateresorts.com

Creating Harmony Enjoy an evening of elevated Chinese cuisine When it comes to elegant dining rooms, there are few establishments in town that come close to Genting Palace at Resorts World Las Vegas. This gorgeous space is accented with a brilliant jade green wall inset with niches for vases at the entrance, with large tables flowing across the carpeted space. The menu presents a good variety of traditional yet elevated Chinese dishes that harmoniously marry flavors, from braised bird’s nest soup, containing Alaska crab and minced Chinese ham, to Peking duck, served with Hoisin sauce, cucumber, scallions and crepes. Crispy crab rolls, shrimp spring rolls and vegan spring rolls will get you off on the right path for dinner here. One thing to note as you peruse the menu for an entrée is that vegan dishes, the chef’s signature items and spicier selections are noted with a special icon, making them easy for everyone to find. Genting Palace offers dim sum, with a platter featuring har gow, siu mai, mushroom dumplings and black truffle dumplings, while seafood ranges from Australian spotted grouper to Alaska king crab and Maine and Australian lobster.

18 | 12.3.23 Las Vegas Magazine

But there’s more, from several sea bass preparations to stewed whole Australian abalone. Spicy kung pao chicken and Cantonese-style crispy chicken are accompanied by prawn crackers, while steamed minced Kurobuta pork is accented with salted fish. Really go over the top with the wok-fried A5 Japanese wagyu beef tenderloin with a signature black pepper sauce. Vegetarians have two great options for their main dish, Sichuan vegan mapo tofu and Sichuan vegan Impossible meat. The fried rice dishes capture a wide range of flavors and seasonal ingredients—try the truffle crab meat fried rice with butternut squash, egg scallion and broccoli. Noodle dishes include Malaysia style kway tiao with Chinese sausage, Singapore-style curry fried vermicelli and the mild vegetarian fried rice. The six-course tasting menu here features several intriguing dishes like the wok-fried beef tenderloin. To get the most from the meal, do opt for the wine pairing. –Nina King

Warm Welcome

Arts District restaurant serves decadent delights The burgeoning Arts District area in Las Vegas is home to several eateries, and 1228 Main is an elegant yet casual space that welcomes guests in. The brick-faced building near the corner of Colorado and Main is easily walkable from anywhere nearby. Inside is a bar on one side and a dining room and bakery counter on the other. It creates a welcoming atmosphere based on similar San Francisco venues. For breakfast and lunch service, and brunch on weekends, order up delights at the bakery counter such as the cherry walnut toast with cinnamon

sugar crust and caramelized apples, a ham and Gruyère croissant, or Tunisian shakshuka, with eggs in a spiced pepper stew. Especially amazing is the crème brulée croissant, with caramelized vanilla custard. Head in for dinner, and experiment with the small-but-just-right menu. From butter made with Straus cream to the soft, lush sheep’s milk ricotta or organic chicken foie gras mousse with port wine syrup, the Cowboy Creamery Mt Tam with toasted cherry-walnut bread, the spreadables elevate each bite. Hand-cut steak tartare, grilled Ku-

miai oyster with prosecco mignonette and grilled California squid over gigante beans are all perfectly shareable. Larger plates include sheep milk ricotta tortellini; bouillabaisse with sautéed pacific snapper, shrimp, clams and mussels; and truffled chicken pot pie are other inventive dishes that you may try to keep to yourself. The cocktails and wine selections here are almost as important as the food, so belly up to the bar or let your server guide you. –Nina King 1228 Main St., 702.602.0531

Jingles and Singles Singer gets in the spirit with annual holiday twist

To say this has been a huge year for Barry Manilow would be a huge understatement: He broke Elvis Presley’s record of 636 performances at the International Theater at Westgate Las Vegas; the New York Pops celebrated its 40th birthday with a Carnegie Hall gala dedicated to Manilow’s music; and his Broadway musical Harmony opened in November! There’s really only one way for Manilow to close out the year—helping his fanbase ring in the holidays in Las Vegas. A Very Barry Christmas, a riff on Manilow’s ridiculously successful residency at the International Theater, promises an endlessly entertaining evening of his greatest hits, interspersed with holiday chestnuts. From Dec. 7-9, Manilow will spread holiday cheer through songs like “Jingle Bells,” “White Christmas,” “(There’s No Place Like) Home for the Holidays,” “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” and “Happy Holiday/ The Holiday Season.” But he’ll also remind audience members why they keep coming back to see him again and again, thanks to classics like “Looks Like We Made It” and “I Write the Songs.” Capping off his wonderful year? On Dec. 11, NBC will air a Manilow Christmas special that is based on his Las Vegas shows. So if you’re unable to get to town (or snag a ticket while you’re here), don’t forget to set that DVR for the next best thing to being there. –Ken Miller

Light Up Your Night

Candle company offers unique nightlife hidden within its walls When you go on vacation to another city, do you: 1. Want to go where the locals go? 2. Find experiences that are unique and special? If I’m talking about you, then you’ve stumbled on the perfect story, one that will address these two areas in spades. Introducing Speakeasy Candle Co. at UnCommons. Opened just over a year ago, UnCommons is a mixed-use community in the southwest corner of the Las Vegas Valley that’s still being added to. The

multiacre destination is occupied by apartments and workspaces, but there’s also an impressive lineup of eateries, bars and unique small businesses—it’s like a little city in the city. And one of the coolest occupants at UnCommons is Speakeasy Candle Co. While the small storefront stacks beautiful candles with scents inspired by classic cocktails, we’re here to put you in the know about Speakeasy … behind one of the walls is a speakeasy!

Tips/Insider Knowledge Sign up for the In-The-Know List at speakeasycandleco.com and receive a promo that can be used at checkout when booking a workshop. Speakeasy Candle Co. currently offers a promotion with UnCommons tenants Amari and The Sundry: You get a “key” at the end of the workshop that will unlock a secret menu for cocktails at each location. Each 12-ounce candle has a wooden wick, the wax is plant-based, and the fragrances are toxic-free and clean-burning.

“This was something that was birthed out of COVID,” said Alisha Alexander, owner of Speakeasy Candle Co. “My business background is fashion design; those details translate here as far as experience and branding, but candle making was always a hobby. I enjoy gifting candles to family and friends. … When I was digging deep for myself as an entrepreneur, I was really challenged to lean into things I loved, and candle making was born. I also love the vibes of speakeasies and craft cocktails and wanted to combine things I loved.” And that’s just what guests will find once behind the walls of the shop. You can sign up for the weekly Candle & Cocktails Workshop, a 90-minute experience where the ticket price includes making your own 12-ounce candle and picking two craft cocktails to enjoy. Mixologist Jahlisa Williams whips up some of the tastiest craft cocktails during each workshop, including the new December cocktail, the cranberry margarita.

Cranberry margarita

The holiday-inspired sip is a mix of Don Julio blanco tequila, Cointreau, house-made margarita mix and cranberry juice. Other cocktails that Williams has specially created include the honey cinnamon Old-Fashioned with Uncle Nearest whiskey and honey infused with cinnamon, and a garnish of sage. Our favorite cocktail is the chocolate espresso martini, made with vanilla

vodka, Kahlua, Baileys Irish Cream, Godiva white chocolate liqueur and freshly brewed espresso. “Once you cross the threshold to the speakeasy, the ceilings are dropped, the lights are dropped, it’s meant to feel super-intimate and the experience we walk you through is to engage your olfactory senses,” said Alexander, who also runs the workshop. Groovy mood music helps set the scene as well—pop and hip-hop hits turn into jazzy instrumentals. The décor is half candle-making workshop and half intimate and opulent bar. Blending all the elements together creates a special evening, an out-of-the-box night out. And Speakeasy Candle Co. also offers a daytime workshop on Saturdays where guests get the same candle-making experience but with a mimosa or margarita flight in four different flavors. “UnCommons—the vibe is something that all people use the exact same phrase when talking about it: ‘You don’t feel like you’re in Vegas,’” Alexander said. “It’s like an escape. That’s what candles do and that’s what speakeasies do—I felt like this was a perfect fit.” –Kiko Miyasato

Find your perfect cut at any of these world-class restaurants around town If you’re here as part of Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, odds are you’re in search of that perfect steak. Well, no city does it better than Las Vegas! And no matter your preferred cut, we’ve got it all sorted out. Find your favorite in the following pages and enjoy!

STK Steakhouse at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, 702.698.7990 A memorable steakhouse serves a memorable version of this classic, an on-the-bone ribeye from wagyu cattle that are grain-fed for 500 days. Not only is it arguably the most visually appealing of all the cuts, its center of rich fat ensures a buttery flavor throughout;

you might not even need any accompanying sauce to enjoy it.

Stanton Social Prime at Caesars Palace, 702.650.5985 Yes, this counts as steak in our book! Similar to steak tartare, Stanton’s version of this appetizer, which has its origins in Italy, blends thinly sliced raw beef with lemon-thyme brown butter, smoked aioli and pine nuts. One bite of this gorgeous presentation and you’ll be hogging the whole “shared appetizer” for yourself.

Bazaar Meat by José Andrés at Sahara Las Vegas, 702.761.7610 Jose Andrés is a master at creating taste revelations at every turn. And if you’ve never experienced this method of cooking meat, you are truly missing

out. Delicate pieces of Japanese A5 wagyu beef are delivered, accompanied by a piping-hot ishiyaki stone. Simply pick up a piece, place it on the stone, and cook to your liking. There are several options available on this menu, but splurge and order the Kobe eye of the rib for a real treat.

Heritage Steak at The Mirage, 702.791.7330 This is a lesser-known cut among steak fans, and that needs to change quickly—this cut is super juicy and has plenty of rich marbling. Heritage Steak’s 12-ounce Westholme version from the rangelands of Northern Australia, is pan-seared in order to lock in the maximum amount of flavor. Do yourself a favor and acquaint yourself with what might be your new favorite cut. You can thank us later.

Nosh

StripSteak at Mandalay Bay, 702.632.7414 If anyone asks why horseradish was invented, how can this cut not be the immediate answer? The two go together in a sublime way, and this 16-ounce version, courtesy of celebrity chef Michael Mina, is only enhanced by the use of the poultry product. It’s accompanied by a blue cheese popover and black truffle au jus—heaven. Quantities are always limited, so we suggest calling ahead of time on this one.

The Steak House at Circus Circus, 702.794.3767 One of the best steakhouses in the country—40 years and still going strong—features an amazing version of one of the country’s most popular cuts. It’s about as tender as you’ve ever had, a direct result of the restaurant’s dry-aging process—every cut, Midwestern in origin, is aged 21 days at 37 degrees Fahrenheit in a dry-aging locker with floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing you to check out all the cuts you’re about to choose from.

Smith & Wollensky at The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian, 702.637.1515 My personal favorite, the filet mignon is the most tender of any cut, and because this 9-ounce version is wagyu (and is black grade), it has a higher fat content than its American cousin, so the rich flavor you’ve come to expect is even deeper than usual. All this is a long-winded way of saying you are in for a serious treat, especially when it’s accompanied by roasted shallots, asparagus and bone marrow butter.

Barry’s Downtown Prime at Circa Resort & Casino, 702.726.5504 I know, I know—some of you just aren’t fans. But what would any steak

roundup be without this amazing creation? And Barry combines beef tenderloin, Dijon, horseradish and a quail egg to create an appetizer that feels more like a meal. You may want to ask for some additional toasted brioche, as you’re likely to go through it quickly. Get over any preconceptions you may have and order this. Now!

Carversteak at Resorts World Las Vegas, 702.550.2333 Sometimes it’s all about where a steak is from that makes all the difference. While this premium cut from Carversteak is technically a New York strip, this 18-ounce Kansas City version still has the bone. And no matter how many New York strips you might have had in your lifetime, it’s always a good idea to try a fresh spin on an established genre. This is a true highlight on an already excellent menu.

Wagyu filet mignon

Nosh

Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse at Golden Nugget 702.386.8399 Another fan favorite, this is as about as close as you can to filet mignon, as they are both from the same cut of meat. However, chateaubriand is typically served in an enormous portion – in the case of Vic & Anthony’s that’s 20 ounces of juicy, silky smooth goodness. You can choose to have it served whole or sliced into smaller portions; there are no wrong choices.

Peter Luger Steak House at Caesars Palace, 702.caesars.com One of the newest restaurants to hit the Strip, this Las Vegas outpost of the New York original is uncompromising in its philosophy of letting the meat’s flavor profile speak for itself (the only sauce to hit the table is the signature Peter Luger sauce, served in a gravy

boat, which is meant to be enjoyed with just about everything). You can apply it to the Ribeye For Two, but we have a feeling you won’t be doing that—after your server drizzles a few spoonfuls of the juices from the plate, you’ll wonder why you ever needed bearnaise.

One Steakhouse at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, 702.693.5000 For many steak fans, this is the promised land of premium cuts, featuring the best of both worlds—it looks similar to a T-bone (with two different cuts of meat on either side of a large bone in the middle), but its tenderloin portion is larger; on the other side you get strip steak. David and Michael Morton’s impeccably appointed restaurant serves up a 32-ounce version that’s more than enough meat for two. Time to revisit an old friend—or make a new one!

Golden Nugget corrals concertgoers for its annual cavalcade of shows There may not be much bull riding or bronco busting happening on Fremont Street during Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, but you’ll still find plenty of NFR veterans there; they know at the end of the day the music is happening downtown. Once a year The Showroom at Golden

Nugget becomes a hallowed hall for honky-tonk heroes, high-lonesome songwriters, cowboy crooners and country outlaws. The 10 p.m. shows start just as the last Golden Nugget shuttles leaving Thomas & Mack Center arrive in the City of Las Vegas proper.

Unfortunately, singer-songwriter Mark Chesnutt will not be able to launch the concert series due to a health condition that caused him to cancel his November shows. This makes Mark Wills the lead-off performer with his Friday night (Dec. 8) slot. Wills went from paying dues at The Buckboard in Atlanta to becoming the 218th member of the Grand Ole Opry in a seven-album career that produced 19 charting singles. Wills emerged with “Jacob’s Ladder” in 1996 before firming up the foundation of a successful career with “Wish You Were Here” and “I Do (Cherish You).” The Academy of Country Music Awards’ Top New Male Vocalist for 1998 had his biggest success with nostalgic number “19 Somethin’,” which spent six weeks atop the country charts with images of “Skating rinks and black Trans Ams/Big hair and parachute pants” striking a chord with listeners. Wills comes to Vegas after recently playing a three-song tribute to the late Keith Whitley at the Opry, and may include a medley of Ronnie Milsap classics if the audience at The Showroom is lucky. Milsap, in one of his final shows, played the Golden Nugget’s rodeo concert series last year, as did Ray

Wylie Hubbard. Hubbard is hardly reaching the end of his road, though. He may cover a song (“Choctaw Bingo”) by fellow Texan James McMurtry, but he’s an American original in every sense and returns to Golden Nugget’s rodeo shows on Sunday night (Dec. 10) for the fourth time. Hubbard’s a subterranean homesick poet, a reluctant outlaw, a dedicated rock ’n’ roller and living country blues legend. The best place to start for newbies is 2006 album Snake Farm, from which Hubbard draws the title cut and “Rabbit” as set staples. Hubbard is equally at home delivering slow-churning boogie as he is with the lyrical illuminations of “Mother Blues” (“The days that I keep my gratitude higher than my expectations/Ah! Well, I have re-

ally good days”) and “Drunken Poet’s Dream,” his grizzled voice encapsulating a lifetime of uncompromising spirit and road-weary wisdom. Little Texas may have been formed in Nashville but, like Hubbard, are very much a product of the Lone Star State. Monday night’s (Dec. 11) featured act helped kick-start the ’90s with current set opener “Some Guys Have All the Love” from 1992 debut First Time for Everything breaking the country singles Top 10. The band would score more than a dozen hits including 1994 No. 1 “My Love,” but can safely claim “God Blessed Texas” as a signature tune and a cover of Eagles’ “Peaceful Easy Feeling” as a live highlight. Knoxville-born Rodney Atkins has a 10 p.m. show on Tuesday (Dec. 12). He’s on track to appear at The Showroom despite a lung infection that led to early October canceled appearances in Oklahoma and Colorado. Atkins began a six-song streak of No. 1s in 2006, beginning with “If You’re Going Through Hell (Before the Devil Even Knows)”, which spent four weeks at No. 1 and become Billboard’s top country song of 2006. Follow-up “Watching You” topped the chart for four weeks as well, becoming the top country song of 2007. Atkins’ chart success continued through 2019 with the title track from Caught Up in the Country, and he tours as much as possible with wife Rose Falcon. Twenty-three years after charting with “Dust on the Bottle,” David Lee Murphy (Dec. 13) was surprised to share Musical Event of the Year honors with Kenny Chesney at the 2018 CMA Music Awards for their col-

Little Texas

laboration “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright.” Murphy had a successful track record co-writing No. 1 hits for Chesney (“Living in Fast Forward”), Jason Aldean (“Big Green Tractor”) and Thompson Square (“Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not”) since withdrawing from his own recording career, so it was an unexpected honor for the cowboy from Illinois. Murphy’s sets cover the spectrum of his songwriting history. The history of Thursday night’s (Dec. 14) headliners dates back nearly a half-century to when David Bellamy co-wrote “Spiders and Snakes” with Jim Stafford. The success drew David and older brother Howard into A-list circles and a song

written by a roadie for Neil Diamond. Diamond turned down “Let Your Love Flow,” enabling The Bellamy Brothers to record it and become hitmakers. Follow-ups “If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me” and “Do You Love as Good as You Look?” became pickup lines as well as Top 40 hits (and eventually part of the yacht rock canon). By then, they became the live draw they remain today. Eddie Montgomery planned to continue as Montgomery Gentry in honor of the memory of Troy Gentry, who died in a 2017 helicopter crash. The final act (Dec. 15) of Golden Nugget’s rodeo concert series now tours under his own name but

delivers the hits he created with Gentry beginning in 1999 with “Hillbilly Shoes.” The Southern rock influence in their sound set them apart on the airwaves and helped them earn Vocal Duo of the Year honors at the 2000 CMA awards, ending eight years of dominance by Brooks & Dunn. Each successive album beginning with 1999 debut Tattoos & Scars climbed higher up the country chart until You Do Your Thing debuted at No. 2 in 1994. Montgomery could always form a superduo with younger brother John Michael Montgomery, but for now, the spirit of his longtime partner is very within him, and Montgomery Gentry’s music lives on.

Be blown away by Carrie Underwood’s Las Vegas Strip residency By Em Jurbala

She really did take that Louisville slugger to both headlights. Carrie Underwood, the powerhouse vocalist who’s long been loved for her country tunes, returns to her Reflection: The Las Vegas Residency, this week to bring three more nights of great music and phenomenal showmanship. And, you may have guessed it, a pretty little souped-up four-wheel drive does make an appearance. Resorts World Las Vegas has proven time and time again that it brings an incredible level of production with each residency lucky enough to call the theater home. Underwood’s is no exception. Visual elements include moving set pieces, flashy lighting design and various screens, creating a dynamic backdrop that morphs seamlessly to accompany each song that the singer performs. Then, of course, there’s the star herself, with a wardrobe of fashionable outfits, a voice so fierce it fills the space the moment she lets out her first note, and those glorious legs! The singer stuns at every moment of this show, from breakup bangers like “Cowboy Casanova” to ballads like “Jesus, Take The Wheel” and upbeat tracks like “All-American Girl.” While Underwood’s catalog surely must have been hard to narrow down into a single show, she’s gone out of her way to enPhoto by Denise Truscello

sure she displays her full range of talents to her Vegas crowds. You can likely count on hearing your favorites as she takes hits from most of her albums, from debut Some Hearts all the way to her latest, Denim & Rhinestones. She even performs “How Great Thou Art” from her album of gospel hymns. The dancers and instrumentalists who join Underwood also help bring the whole show to life with their respective talents. Aerialists and acrobats make appearances, bringing a very Vegas-y essence to the already elaborate display. When the star steps offstage for a moment, ribbon dancers fill the foreground of the scene under blue-toned lighting, while Underwood’s band play soft instrumentals, creating a beautiful calm in the room before the fiery performer returns. You can almost feel the room take a breath as the serene moment plays out.

Making the show even more special, Underwood takes advantage of brief breaks between songs to share anecdotes, address the audience and allow the room to feel a connection with her. The singer’s energy is warm and kind, and it shines brighter than even the stage lights can manage. If you’re particularly lucky, you may even find yourself having a close encounter with Underwood, possibly even a moment onstage with her. Wrapping up the show, the singer pulls out her final stop, which (spoiler incoming) is an impressive water feature that is unlike anything you could possibly imagine. As water flows down a sloped strucaxs.com ture, drenching Underwood and her dancers, the songstress belts out her final song in a moment you need to see live. It’s magnificent and memorable, and it perfectly concludes the over-the-top, Vegas-style spectacle.

Year after year, Rodney Carrington brings NFR crowds together like no other entertainer By Ken Miller

AS FAR AS COUNTRY COMEDY ACTS GO, it doesn’t get much bigger than Rodney Carrington’s unique blend of mirth and music. There’s a very specific reason he’s been asked to perform during National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas year in and year out: It would be inconceivable to not have him involved. As Carrington told Las Vegas Magazine in an interview

9 p.m. Dec. 7-9 and 14-16, starting at $89.99 plus tax and fee. ticketmaster.com

prior to one of his many multiday stints at MGM Grand: “It’s like seeing family. It’s just coming and seeing the gang, you know? Making them laugh.” And boy, does Carrington succeed at that. And his “family” never misses an opportunity to howl at both his observations on normal life and his singular songs that complement his bluecollar style, including “Dancin’ With a Man,” “More of a Man” and “Show Them to Me.” (One title, which we can’t reprint here, is a letter to his, um … you get the idea). Carrington’s upward career trajectory was apparent early on with the release of his first album, Hangin’ with Rodney, in 1998. He would go on to release a total of seven albums, two greatest-hits compilations and a holiday album, all of which did well—including No. 2 on the U.S. Comedy Albums chart for

King of the Mountains and No. 3 on the Billboard Top Comedy Albums chart for Greatest Hits. His success there led to side projects like an ABC self-titled sitcom from 2004-’06 and the 2008 movie Beer for My Horses, which he both co-wrote with and co-starred in with Toby Keith. And in 2009, his noncomedy album, Make It Christmas, yielded a hit, “Camouflage and Christmas Lights.” While he has tapered back on albums, his touring schedule is as busy as ever. And that’s because a connection with a live audience remains his priority. As he told Las Vegas Magazine, “I want to be connected in a real way, not a fictitious way. I find people that are overly concerned with things like social media are missing out on what’s important. They’re so connected to things that don’t matter in life that they’re disconnected

from things that do, and I think that’s a big problem for society in general right now.” And as for the message he’s looking to relay, Carrington has always been up-front about his comedy: It comes from his personal experience. Despite writing songs like “Vote for Trump,” Carrington insists he never wants to get political. “Look, I have no agenda,” he said. “I make people laugh. The level of success I’ve achieved didn’t come from not being good or not connecting with somebody. The success that I’ve had came from being able to connect with people, the people that come and see me ... my willingness to tell the truth about my own personal life. My only agenda is making people laugh. I don’t have any agenda. I always tell people if you come to my show and you learn anything, it’s an accident.”
