Pop quiz: What’s the first thing you think of when you think “quintessential Vegas entertainment”? I don’t know what you pictured, but for me it’s always the tribute show, a longstanding tradition here in the desert. Celebrity impersonators were practically invented in Sin City; Elvises used to be on almost every corner of the Strip. The tribute show evolved out of that and has helped define Las Vegas. It feels safe to say tribute shows will always be part of our entertainment landscape. This week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine highlights not only one of the city’s longest-running and successful tribute shows, but also a new one that might soon become an institution of its own. The Rat Pack is Back at Tuscany Suites & Casino does an amazing job of re-creating the glory days of Vegas entertainment when Sammy, Frank and Dean ruled the Strip (“Perfectly Frank,” p. 32). And Spice Wannabe at Excalibur has audiences cheering and screaming. It’s a letter-perfect tribute to the most successful girl group of all time (“Friendship Lasts Forever,” p. 36). This week’s issue is also a celebration of Strip dining. In addition to a Q&A with chef Michael Mina about his successful Las Vegas dining empire and his upcoming restaurants projects (“Let’s Get Cooking,” p. 34), we’ll introduce you to some new establishments you’ll want to visit: LPM Restaurant & Bar at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas (“From France, With Love,” p. 20); and East Coast classic Peter Luger Steak House at Caesars Palace (“Keep It Simple,” p. 12.) If you’ve got kids and want a fun experience, check out ARTE MUSEUM, where you can let your imagination run wild (“Lose Yourself,” p. 17). Whatever your definition of “quintessential Las Vegas entertainment” is, we hope we helped you find it this week.

Keep It Simple East Coast steakhouse stakes a claim on the Strip—and it’s glorious
When it comes to some dining experiences, simplicity really is the recipe for success. Peter Luger Steak House, which opened its first beer-hall-style restaurant in 1887 in Brooklyn, has proven that for nearly a century and a half, deciding early on that it would not deviate from its format: Great steaks surrounded by classic sides and appetizers, all accompanied by Luger’s Own Sauce. And if you haven’t yet had the pleasure of the Peter Luger experience, now’s your chance; there’s now one at Caesars Palace, the company’s first domestic expansion in more than 60 years. The German beer hall feel is alive and well at this location, complete with servers who are ready to make you feel right at home with old-world attitude. As you enjoy a classic cocktail—Manhattans, Old-Fashioneds, martinis, you name it, they’ll make it—you’ll want to order one of the franchise’s most famous creations—sliced tomatoes. Yes, that’s exactly what it sounds like. Or you can order it with accompaniments like onions, jumbo shrimp and chopped bacon. Whatever you order, smother it with that Luger’s Own Sauce and you will be in heaven. It’s hard to put into words how something so simple can be so delicious—so I’m not going to try. Just order it! The simplicity doesn’t get much better than the red meat portion of the menu. The lunchtime burger is a half-pound of prime chuck, served on a bun with a slice of onion—and that’s it, unless you want cheese! From the steak section, your choices are a porterhouse steak for two, three or four, rib steak or ribeye for two. And lest you’re wondering, they’re all served medium rare. We wouldn’t suggest ordering a steak well-done here, as you might get a bit of side-eye. There are plenty of steak alternatives should you so choose, from two double-thick lamb loin chops and a broiled chicken half to grilled Atlantic salmon and a Dover sole, deboned at your table. Sides are what you would expect at such an establishment, from Luger’s Special German-Fried Potatoes, creamed spinach and sauteed broccoli. All are solid accompaniments to one of the best new meals you’re likely to have on the Las Vegas Strip. –Ken Miller Caesars Palace. caesars.com

Magical Season
Looking for some holiday fun? Find plenty of experiences and themed décor all over Vegas It’s the best of both worlds: You get to enjoy the glamor of Vegas, combined with the merriment of the holiday season. Here are a few Christmas attractions and shows to get you in the spirit. The Ice Rink at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas gives you a little lodge feeling with an ice rink (skates available for rent), fire pits, hot chocolate, apple cider and adult holiday-inspired cocktails. This is a favorite for locals and visitors each year. A must for locals is Ethel M Chocolates Holiday Cactus Garden Lights. Get yourself a hot chocolate, check out the thousands of lights strung around the massive plants of the garden, and see Santa himself. On the way back, swing through the gift shop to fill out any holes in your Christmas gift list. If you get the holiday collection, snag the prickly pear satin crème—it’s divine. For a heartwarming experience that will give you belly laughs, ventriloquist Terry Fator’s seasonal A Very Terry Christmas at New York-New York brings all the cast members from his regular show together to celebrate. Everyone from Winston the Impersonating Turtle to Duggie, the burner extraordinaire, busts out their favorite holiday tunes. If you stop into Bellagio, the Conservatory and Botanical Gardens seasonal display features The Nutcracker this year (pictured). Scenes from the ballet play out throughout the attraction, accented by amazing floral décor created by designer Ed Libby and the Bellagio horticulture team. It’s open 24 hours. If you’re traveling around looking at the holiday fun in Vegas, there are several other places to check out. At The Shops at Crystals, you’ll have a hard time ignoring the 55-foot tree, decorated with 100,000 LED lights and 5,000 Swarovski ornaments. Shaq’s Fantasy Lab at FSLV—Fashion Show Las Vegas presents A Christmas Dream, with different holiday themes in each room of the immersive experience. Off the Strip, check out Glittering Lights at the Las Vegas Speedway, Enchant at the Las Vegas Ballpark and Opportunity Village’s Magical Forest, which is celebrating its 31st anniversary this year. –Nina King

Attraction re-creates nature in a spellbinding way You’re likely to see the world in an entirely new way after a visit to ARTE MUSEUM. This incredibly unique, transportive attraction brings the latest visual, audio and olfactory technologies together in a glorious way, creating an extremely relaxing, tranquil space where meditation and reflection are not only encouraged, but are also practically guaranteed. Created by Korea-based digital design company d’strict, ARTE MUSEUM re-creates nature scenes in a way that

feels a bit disorienting at first. In one room, you’ll find yourself at the bottom of a towering waterfall; in another, you’ll feel like you’re in the middle of a forest as its creatures romp and play around you; in another, you’re standing on a shore as waves crash and roll in. (It’s so convincing, you might be tempted to take your shoes off!) If you’re on the fence about whether to bring the kids, check this out: At one installation featuring a screen with unique animals that inhabit a jungle,
your child can sit at a table and, with crayons, draw their own unique animal. That drawing is given to a museum employee, who will scan it. Then look up at the screen: Your child’s drawing has been brought to digital life, joining the other animals. It’s an extremely cool, personal touch that makes each visit to ARTE MUSEUM unique for each visitor. –Ken Miller 3716 Las Vegas Blvd. S. Suite 208. 702.725.7200

Temple of Taste
Take in the plush ambience as you savor elegant offerings at this Strip venue Las Vegas has its share of on-trend restaurants, but one of the hottest is Cathédrale. Filled with dark woods and plush seating, it looks as you’d imagine a Renaissance church might, hence the name. That name channels the original Cathédrale in New York, where soaring ceilings and wooden tables abound. Drinks here are fun and tasty, with such offerings as the Quintessentia, a sweet concoction of Maker’s Mark bourbon, Nonino amaro, lemon and blood orange. It’s topped by egg white accented with an orange “C” that provides a nice finish. For a nonalcoholic option, try the Blackberry Buck with blackberry, lemon and Fever-Tree ginger beer. Start your foray into the French-Mediterranean cuisine here with grilled hen of the woods mushrooms and basil pesto. The chef’s oyster selection comes with a mignonette and fresh lemon. A classic item, the caprese, gets an update with grilled marinated peppers standing in for the typical tomatoes. Dip into the burrata with wedges of chickpea pancakes. A signature dish imported from Cathédrale’s New York location, The Omelette comes with house-made potato chips, crème fraîche and the vaunted Kaluga caviar. Even salad gets an upgrade—the king crab and avocado salad adds in lobster and a celery root remoulade to a bed of butter lettuce. For entrées, take your pick of such items as a 22-ounce prime aged ribeye, pictured, or the huge Pané Diable, schnitzel-like breaded chicken breast with mustard endive and Asian pear. The fragrance of black truffle fettucine will waft across the table. Round out those dishes with sides like a French fry bouquet, with perfectly cooked spuds, neither too crisp nor heartbreakingly limp. For dessert, you have a plethora of dishes to choose from, including the gorgeous Sorrento Lemon. This is a doppelgänger for a real lemon, with bright yellow dappled “skin.” Crack it open, and the flavors of yuzu and calamansi come bursting through. The Paris-brest layers hazelnut cream between pieces of pâte à choux, drizzled with chocolate sauce. –Nina King

From France, With Love Elegant Strip eatery channels the spirit of Jean Cocteau
In early November, LPM Restaurant & Bar quietly opened in The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, with LPM chief executive Nicolas Budzynski looking over every detail of the French-inspired restaurant, the newest installation of the brand and only the second in the country. It’s an elegant space imbued with color, from the décor to the art. “Joie de vivre—this unbridled enjoyment of life—is at the core of every intricate detail at LPM, making Las Vegas a natural fit for us,” Budzynski said in a news release. With inspiration drawn from French artist Jean Cocteau (the bar’s cocktail menu features both drinks and stories from the life of the bon vivant), meals are packed full of flavor and a bit of surprise, with starting dishes like burrata with cherry tomatoes and basil, escargots de Bourgogne (this is a signature item that earns rave reviews), and green lentil salad with apple and burnt tomatoes. Main courses include such items as homemade gnocchi with cherry tomatoes, whole sea bream, coquelet au citron confit (marinated baby chicken) and canard à l’orange, a variation on the classic French dish. Larger dishes include bone-in ribeye with potato galette and bordelaise sauce, a whole roasted chicken with foie gras and a whole grilled sea bass. “Our aim with every dish we serve is to create delicately intense and memorable flavors guests cannot find elsewhere,” said Budzynski. Mission accomplished! –Nina King The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. 702.698.1889

This shopping mecca has anything and everything you could want for fashion, accessories, gifts, skincare and toys as well as art, sports memorabilia, tattoos and unique experiences like the brandnew Lost City Show. on the hour from 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Located near the V Theater, the 3D-projection video show is a fun and visually exciting experience, with more than three dozen projectors making the space come to life. The show is based on Earth’s elements—you’ll watch fire and lava light up the buildings, water rush down the walls, ice freeze onto surfaces, and flowers and grass grow under the sun. The sounds of thunder, rain and nature help bring the surreal effects to life and change the stone facades of V Theater into a living, breathing cityscape.
Another free show at the complex, the iconic Rain Show, runs during the same hours over near the entrance to the Hilton Grand Vacations Elara. Yes, rain falls all around indoors, and the long-running, free attraction also recently received a complete overhaul. New to the attraction is a bridge crossing over the waters; as you walk along it, sheets of water fall all around, making for one cool photo for your social media postings. –Kiko Miyasato

Blowing Away the Competition Cigar lounge is an all-around awesome experience Take a puff. Roll the smoke around. And blow out. Don’t inhale! “There’s no rules to cigar smoking, though,” said Ian Floranza, general manager of Eight Lounge at Resorts World Las Vegas. surroundings. “Eight Lounge is a vibrant and sophisticated lounge where you can gather with friends over exceptional cigars by some of the most revered makers of cigars in the world, as well as spirits and signature cocktails that are crafted and curated by mixologists well-versed in the flavor profiles of premium tobaccos for optimal pairings,” Floranza said.
Ask Floranza to hook you up with a cigar and cocktail pairing, like one of his top choices the Arturo Fuente Opus X 888 cigar alongside a classic Irish coffee. “The flavor profile of Teeling whiskey used in our Irish coffee, which is a guest favorite, really complements the mild vanilla sweetness, floral and cinnamon notes of the Opus X 888 cigar,” he said.
Eight Lounge offers an exclusive small plates menu from next-door restaurant, Brezza.

Cheers
Eight Lounge offers a wide range of cigars, stored in the venue’s walkin humidor and retail space. With more than 150 selections and prices from $14 all the way up to $5,000, guests can peruse more than 60 different brands that include standouts like Cohiba “Weller” edition, Padron 50th Anniversary, Gurkha “His Majesty’s Reserve” and Arturo Rare Pink Series. And with cigars comes cigar smoke, but patrons don’t need to worry about stagnant smoke in the air, because Eight Lounge’s ventilation system does not circulate the smoked-filled air. Instead, once every four minutes fresh, new air is pumped in, making the space very breathable and pleasant to smokers and nonsmokers. “Our guests sometimes forget that it’s a smoking lounge because our ventilation sys-
tem is the best of any cigar lounge in the world,” Floranza said. Once seated with your cigar, peruse the impressive craft cocktail menu. We suggest starting with the Carajillo cocktail with Licor 43, espresso and an orange peel. Floranza likes to pair the cocktail with the Undercrown cigar. “The simple ingredients of the Carajillo bring together the earthiness of the espresso with the chocolate nuttiness of the cigar,” he said. If you’ve stopped by Eight Lounge after dinner, perhaps start with a dessert-like cocktail like
the peanut butter chocolate martini, served with a fun edible chocolate cigar, and mixed with Ballotin peanut butter chocolate whiskey and XXI Martinis chocolate liqueur. For a classic treat, order the Smoked Macallan Old-Fashioned, a blend of Macallan Double Cask 12 Year, demerara syrup, angostura aromatic and angostura orange bitters and smoked with cherrywood or applewood. –Kiko Miyasato

Alvin Smith It’s all about the love of bartending I mean, how can you not want to sit at Alvin Smith’s bar? “I operate off of love,” he says. “I feel like if you add a little love to everything you do—I know it sounds super corny—but if you add a little love to everything, like the cocktails that I make or my conversation, it just makes it better. The world needs more love right now.” Smith is the bartender at the newly opened Velvet Bar at Westgate Las Vegas, the property’s new upscale, intimate bar and lounge with impressive craft cocktails. However, he’s bartended

I thoroughly enjoy what I do.” Before he got into the industry, he spent more than a dozen years as a security guard and corrections officer. “I wanted to be in a job where I didn’t need to tell people what to do anymore,” he says. “I wanted a job that was fun, enjoyable, and bartending seemed right up my alley.” Especially since both his parents were also in the industry—his
mom was a cocktail server and his dad was a pit boss. “It’s kind of in my blood,” Smith says. So he began his bartending career 10 years ago, and says he couldn’t have made a better decision. “I love people,” Smith says. “I am a huge people person. I love meeting people from all walks of life and hearing their stories. It never gets old. To be a good bartender you have to love people, hands down.” And trust us, Smith practices what he preaches, and you’ll know that the minute you sit at his bar. –Kiko Miyasato

INTO OMEGA MART THE MIND-BENDING WORLD OF LAS VEGAS’ MEOW WOLF OUTPOST
THE EXPERIENCE
Described as “America’s most exceptional grocery store,” walking into Omega Mart is the beginning of an adventure. “At Meow Wolf, we like to introduce visitors to our permanent exhibitions in a way that’s familiar, whether that be a seemingly average neighborhood home—as with the House of Eternal Return in Santa Fe— or a grocery store like we have with Omega Mart,” Olsen said. “From there, we present opportunities to expand one’s way of thinking, and new ways to experience otherwise average tasks and processes through the exploration of creative narratives.” As soon as you drop into Omega Mart, other exhibits come into focus, with four main anchor spaces in the exhibit.
+
Putting your finger on Meow Wolf’s Omega Mart is nearly impossible. It’s a transportive, maximalist art installation, rooted in the foundation of a dense, explorative narrative. It’s a place to play and a place to study. It’s the anchor experience at Area15 and Meow Wolf’s largest installation to date, totaling 52,000 square feet. Omega Mart’s art director, Spencer Olsen, describes it as “a psychedelic sci-fi mystery that invites you to investigate as an in-world participant … or a big, fun, explorable art exhibit!” It’s utopian and somewhat dystopian. It’s an experience that refuses to be pinned down—one in which you’re allowed to stumble into a world that’s adjacent to yours, but also lightyears away. Here’s a topline look at the multidimensional environments that beg to be explored, and then explored again.
THE STORY
As you travel through Omega Mart, a rich and complex narrative begins to develop using audio, video and print media. The timeline of the story goes back hundreds of thousands of years, and breadcrumbs are scattered throughout the exhibit for visitors to uncover. Olsen recommends taking notes. “Everything is there for a reason, and we tried to add a lot of continuity so you can learn about something you find in one location elsewhere as you explore. If you think something might be a clue, take a picture.”
Pro tip: Ask an Omega Mart employee about the VIP Package to enhance your experience.
C RE ATED A ND PRES ENTED BY MEOW WO LF Omega Mart is stocked with fun and uncommon products to explore— all with the uncanny ability to fulfill shoppers’ desires.
IS IT SIMILAR TO THE HOUSE OF ETERNAL RETURN IN SANTA FE AND CONVERGENCE STATION IN DENVER? Yes and no, but you’ll have to dive in to find out. “For the narrative deep divers, there are similarities,” Olsen said. “They are completely different artistically and experientially, but there is an underlying sub-fiction in stories about groups and entities with the ability to travel between worlds. There will be more revealed around these relationships between the stories in Denver and other future exhibits.”

Dramcorp is the parent company to Omega Mart, and as you’ll soon find out, it’s hiding a secret.
Within each anchor space, there is an everunfolding cast of unique experiences, and choosing a favorite may be impossible. “It’s hard to pick one [favorite experience], so I’ll pick some distinct ones,” Olsen said. “Pulse, by Claudia Bueno, achieves something remarkable. I’ve heard someone describe it as ‘healing,’ which is as good of an experience as I can think of. Uploaded Ghosts, by Stephen Hendee, with musical collaboration by Beach House, feels like the artistic and emotional summit of the show,” Olsen said.

transports audiences to Las Vegas’ golden age of entertainment The spirit of golden age Las Vegas is always present, even if visible signs are increasingly rare. The old gives way to the new, signs from classic resort-casinos retire to the Neon Museum just north of the Strip, and torches brandished by top entertainers get passed on to the next generation. Time stands still at the Copa Room at Tuscany Suites & Casino, though, where the music is performed by live musicians, the humor is blue and The Rat Pack Is Back. The Chairman of the Board (Chris Jason) is running things, of course, fronting a seven-piece band that is unplugged save for electric keyboard amplification. He hits his stride early with a swinging rendition of “Fly Me to the Moon,” shaking hands with front-row fans and creating rapport with fairer audience members seated further away. A percentage of those present are either true devotees of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. or have seen the show before in other locations. A British Columbia resident sitting at a front-center table says he saw the show at The Savoy in London and brought his brother from their Downtown Las Vegas hotel especially to see the show. They are expecting a slightly but visibly inebriated Dino (Drew Anthony), in

a shiny suit and sporting a luxurious coiffure, to come out and make things a little more rambunctious. The devil-may-care crooner of “Volare” and “That’s Amore” makes his connection to the audience with sing-alongs and light provocations. This is, after all, both a show and a time capsule from 1960, when the Rat Pack assisted the Kennedy campaign with influence and entertainment. Sinatra and Martin refused to perform without Davis at appearances at a time when the Civil Rights Movement was about to explode. Without Sammy (Kyle Diamond) taking the stage at the Copa Room there would be a noticeable absence that Frank and Dean can’t fill on their own. They can’t duet effectively on “Santa Baby” either, with all that masculinity on the stage. Luck be a lady in the form of the lovely and talented Santa’s Helper (Erinn Wasiak), who fills the role vivaciously. She’ll leave the liquor cart and most of the raucous humor to the boys, though. The Chairman provides a disclaimer early on regarding the fast-flying humor, making it clear that the standards of six decades earlier prevail at his show and truly tasteless jokes are not off the table. What is on the table is the only tribute show to the Rat Pack in Las Vegas. It’s one of the only places to catch live horns, an upright bass player and a drummer venerable enough to have played Vegas showrooms during the reign of the Rat Pack. The assembled players know the era they pay tribute to well enough to do it justice. Combined with a dinner package in the classic dining atmosphere of Tuscany Gardens, The Rat Pack Is Back is as much a transport back in time as it is top-notch entertainment.

Chef Michael Mina’s Las Vegas success is only just beginning
By Brock Radke
MICHAEL MINA first came to Las Vegas to create a unique dining experience when he was just breaking through as an emerging star in the national culinary scene. He joined an all-star team opening fine dining destinations at the brandnew Bellagio in 1998, and his namesake eatery is still going strong at that iconic resort, all while Mina has evolved into one of the most influential culinary figures in Las Vegas. He also currently operates Bardot Brasserie at Aria, International Smoke at MGM Grand and Stripsteak at Mandalay Bay, and in a few short months, he will have expanded with two more concepts on the boulevard. You helped Bellagio celebrate its 25th anniversary in October. That must have had you looking back at your first experiences on the Las Vegas Strip. The event and the whole weekend were amazing, just being together with (chefs) Jean-Georges (Vongerichten) and Julian (Serrano). Bellagio didn’t just change Las Vegas, it changed the world and the whole face of gaming. The food and beverage had a lot to do with that, the way it elevated food in casinos. It’s been great for us as chefs and great for the industry. And then my restaurant, Michael Mina, which started as Aqua—to be able to walk your parents into Bellagio and have your name on the restaurant, that’s really special. You’ve spent a lot of time here through the years, but had been living in the San Francisco Bay Area until recently, becoming a full-time Las Vegan. Why did you make the move?
I’ve been full-time a little over three years now. These are our two biggest markets and I spent a lot of time with my operations and development teams, and everybody wanted to come to Las Vegas. It just made a lot of sense, and I’ve always loved it here. And after you move here, you realize you can travel less because everyone you’re on the phone with knows you’re in Las Vegas and they say, “Oh, we’ll come to you.” You’re getting ready to open Orla at Mandalay Bay, which is a concept you’ve been developing for a long time. Why was now the right time? I’m Egyptian; my father is from Alexandria and my mother is from Cairo. Growing up, I ate a lot of food I thought was Middle Eastern that was actually Greek. There are a lot of crossover dishes that are almost identical. I have always been extremely passionate about Mediterranean food, but earlier in my career I never did it, because the timing wasn’t right and I didn’t want to be labeled. The first time I really was able to even put my toes in the water was at Seablue (formerly at MGM Grand) and we had a really fun time with that restaurant. After that, I started working more and more in creating this concept that takes from my roots and traditions, a little bit of my journey, and being able to modernize it and put my influence on certain dishes. There’s a lot more Mediterranean on the Strip these days, which backs up your instincts that the time is right. For us, it’s being able to say we’re really bringing this to life, putting approachability into the food but doing it with amazing product, amazing technique, spices from all around the world, a restaurant with high energy. And you have another opening on the horizon, bringing your Bourbon Steak concept to Las Vegas at last, just next door at the Four Seasons. We have Bourbon Steaks in other premier cities, and this will be the first Bourbon Steak supper club. I’ve always loved that space for its accessibility, coming off the Strip and pulling up to the Four Seasons, how it’s private, and it’s a restaurant that attracts locals. We’re creating a menu that moves Bourbon Steak forward and it’ll have great live music, a really good atmosphere with a lot of layers, and beautiful tableside presentations so we can do some fun, theatrical stuff.

Spice Wannabe—The Spice Girls Tribute celebrates the most successful girl group By Matt Kelemen The Spice Girls took the world by storm after the release of “Wannabe” in June 1996, kicking male-dominated Britpop bands to the curb in the U.K. and peppering pop charts with girl power anthems and five-part harmonies. They’ve had two reunion tours since, playing three dates in Las Vegas during the first. They seem ripe for a residency, but visitors to Vegas don’t have to wait to spice up their lives, thanks to tribute show Spice Wannabe—The Spice Girls Tribute, which returns to Excalibur for its third engagement after a tour that concluded with a date at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort in North Carolina. “It was amazing,” said creator/co-producer Casey McConachie, who plays Emma “Baby Spice” Bunton in the show, in a post-tour phone interview. “It was such a good show.
36 | 12.17.23 Las Vegas Magazine
It was probably our biggest crowd that we’ve had so far.” McConachie left little to chance when she first brought Spice Wannabe to Excalibur in July. The show debuted at South Point last year and sold out at the Silverton in February. The cast experimented with an adults-only theme, then went on tour before launching the current family-friendly version during the summer. “The hype around it was already building and growing,” said McConachie. “July was amazing. First night, second, every show … it was so much energy, so many people coming out to see it because it was a limited engagement. We didn’t know if we were going to stay past July, so people were coming and dressing up.” McConachie was in middle school when the Spice Girls went into heavy rotation on MTV. She and her friends assumed Spice Girls personas, with McConachie as the Baby Spice of the group, of course. She went into entertainment, becoming a Britney Spears impersonator and starting her own business, FantaSea Productions, that booked mermaid-costumed performers for events. The insider experiences of performing in tribute shows and casting talent placed her in

position to expand on an idea written down in a notebook into a concept during the doldrum days of the pandemic. “It’s been years in the making,” said McConachie. “Just doing a one-act with Britney, it’s a lot. Hiring out the dancers, costumes, setlists, everything. … The biggest challenge was finding the right talent to cast.” She needed Wannabes who looked like Spice Girls, could sing and could dance. McConachie found them. “The little kids are watching us, not understanding we’re a tribute show,” she said. “They think that we are the group. It’s really cute to see how they’re screaming at the top of their lungs.” Adults scream as well, with some coming as their favorite group member or character from the Spice World movie. “That’s why we named it Spice Wannabe,” said McConachie. “We make it a point in the show to ask who came. We point the people out who dressed up, like ‘Which Spice Girl did you want to be growing up? Where are the Sporties? Where are the Gingers?’ They stand up and cheer.”

Despite the recent boom in these trendy trips, Las Vegas has long been a city ripe with enveloping environments, making each property entrance a portal to a new world. So, let’s take a journey, not just through ticketed attractions, but also to some of the city’s incredibly detailed re-creations of distant locales and even some fantasy lands that you’ll want to spend a lifetime exploring. Providing one of the most enchanting stops for tourists and locals alike, Excalibur opened in 1990, bringing a fully realized medieval castle to the Strip, completed with touches like intricate stained

Frolicking around the castle grounds alone is fun enough, but the real magic comes from Excalibur’s long-standing resident show, . “I think one of the biggest keys to this whole entire show is the audience participation,” director of Royal Productions Philip Shelburne said. “Right now, immersive entertainment is this big-buy word, but that’s what this is, and it’s always been that way. The audience is a character in the show.” The dinner show invites guests to suspend reality for a brief moment as

Mandalay Bay 702.632.4555
For animal lovers, the Strip houses a sinking ancient temple filled to the brim with captivating critters that you can peruse. At Mandalay Bay (a resort with its own South Seas theme), you’ll find , which houses sea life and reptiles that are exciting enough on their own—but the attentively decorated environment puts visitors
right into an alternate universe. As you walk through the stone corridors looking at the exhibit’s Komodo dragon, snakes and piranhas, remember to pause and take in your surroundings. Plush greenery fills the animal-less areas while the temple statue emits a peaceful power. As you make your way toward the sea life portion, you’ll find yourself in
an underwater shipwreck. The creators have even gone so far as to include parts of the shipwreck as decor in the largest shark tank in the attraction, which engulfs the ship, even providing room for sharks to swim above and below visitors. Through Dec. 24 it transforms into Santa in the Shipwreck, and children (with paid admission) get a photo with Santa. Plus, “Santa Jaws” will appear each hour for pics as well. Not far from the Strip, travelers can enter a surreal realm. AREA15, a psychedelic megaplex of its own, features Meow Wolf’s ,a nonsensical, otherworldly supermarket where shoppers are known to stumble upon strange passageways and mythical creatures. The attraction also has a mystery to solve, with various hidden clues all over to help explorers uncover what’s really going on at Dram Corp. “I like the freedom of choice guests have for how they want to experience Omega Mart,” senior creative director Spencer Olsen said. “I like the emotionally vibrant story of an unconventional family who have found themselves in a strange situation. I like the new perspective you get when you leave and the feeling that anything is possible.” Not only does Omega Mart provide a new perspective, but you’ll honestly feel

the streets of Times Square and really get a sense of the Big Apple. The resort, which features re-creations of the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building, opened in 1996 and accomplishes a very metropolitan feel with art deco-style accents and a mini Greenwich Village. Naturally, it’s a touch warmer in Las Vegas than it is in the real Empire City, but that just means the weather’s perfect for a stroll along New York-New York’s replica of the Brooklyn Bridge, which sits along Las Vegas Boulevard and provides the perfect backdrop for a meal at one of the property’s bustling eateries. The list just keeps going, too. While you’re in Sin City, you could visit the pyramids of Egypt or the Roman Empire. You could even immerse yourself in your favorite animated movies or the art of Vincent Van Gogh. The options are aplenty, so what are you doing still reading this? Get exploring!
