I’ve said it many times before in this space, but it bears repeating again and again: Las Vegas is a city in which you can pretty much experience everything you can dream up in your head. Don’t believe me? Peruse the following menu of options in this week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine: • Music fan? We’ve got everything from tropical/salsa superstar Marc Anthony at Mandalay Bay (“Laugh, Dance Enjoy,” p. 32), Chicago at The Venetian (“Safety in Numbers,” p. 38), and Barry Manilow at Westgate Las Vegas, who last year made history by performing more shows at the property’s International Theater than The King himself, Elvis Presley (“Passing the Torch,” p. 18). • Miss the days of the cabaret shows? Well, we’re happy to report that the cancan is still alive and well at Le Cabaret Lounge at Paris Las Vegas, where two different free shows celebrate the form (“High Kicks and High Notes,” p. 12). • Looking for a great meal? Check out our exploration of Wally’s Wine & Spirits at Resorts World Las Vegas (“Sincerely Satisfied,” p. 28). • Fan of the outdoors? Grand Canyon West is just two hours away (“What a Difference a Day Makes,” p. 17). • Can’t get enough of magic? Grab some tickets to Penn & Teller, still going strong after decades at Rio Las Vegas (“Unbelievable Illusions,” p. 14). • Obsessed with mermaids? Swim like one at the Mermaid School at Silverton Casino Lodge (“Fins Up!” p. 34). • Love margaritas? National Margarita Day is Feb. 22, and we’ve collected some of the best versions (“For the Love of Tequila,” p. 24). • A big fan of art installations? Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens’ latest is a stunner (“Year of the Dragon,” p. 36). Have we convinced you?

High Kicks and High Notes Enjoy impressive music and moves, wrapped up in two free shows
It’s 9 p.m. and you’re looking to get your night started. We suggest starting it with some free, fabulous entertainment at Le Cabaret Lounge at Paris Las Vegas on Friday and Saturday nights. It’s here that you’ll enjoy two shows (one at 9 p.m. and the other at 10 p.m.) with a cast of gorgeous, talented women who sing, dance and get the crowd hyped. (For you late-night partiers, a second set of show occurs later in the evening at 11 p.m. and midnight.) The first show, La Femme, is a fun, upbeat performance where the ladies come out in pink babydoll dresses that glitter under the lights, topping their outfits with berets in a nod to the property. Synchronized dance moves are soundtracked by the lead singer, whose voice carries through the casino floor as she sings versions of famous pop songs like Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now” and Maroon 5’s “This Love.” The cast bounces around the stage and out into the crowd while Vanity 6’s “Nasty Girl” plays, followed by some impressive high kicking to classic ragtime music. While the show ends, take the remainder of the hour to visit the adjacent bar area, order a classic martini, cold beer or glass of wine, and chill out and socialize at one of the intimate tables. Soon, the lights go up again and the cast is now dressed more playfully (and sexier), perfect for the later time slot. This performance, titled The Red Show, has the ladies in red can-can outfits, the perfect throwback look for songs like “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” and “Lady Marmalade.” The lead singer gives the other performers a small break as she belts out an impressive version of The Police’s “Roxanne.” The whole cast comes back onstage, this time with a little less clothing (and a little naughtier dance moves) to perform to an awesome mashup of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” and Ginuwine’s “Pony.” They close the show with a rambunctious version of “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)” that has guests up on their feet and dancing. Not bad for a night of free entertainment, right? –Kiko Miyasato Paris Las Vegas. 702.946.7000

Unbelievable Illusions
These long-loved Las Vegas headliners will leave you questioning reality It takes some serious talent to be one the longest-running headliners in Vegas history, but Penn & Teller leave no room for doubt in that department. The duo is almost synonymous with Sin City, and the Vegas show will have you thinking, “How did they even do that?” long before the curtain closes. Of course, a magic show is no fun if someone spoils all the tricks beforehand, and with this duo, that would be hard to do anyway. Penn and Teller constantly revise their show. They add new illusions and change things up, ensuring that if you’ve seen them prior, you still have good reason to go back. That being said, here are a few hints of what you might see—or maybe not; they’re unpredictable, and that’s what’s great about these magic men: • A tongue-in-cheek take on the classic “donut on a string” trick that will not only leave you laughing but remind you that even the professionals are not in the business of taking themselves too seriously. • An impressive feat of memorization that requires a ridiculous amount of decks of playing cards, a few willing volunteers and Penn’s incredible recollection of those decks. • A mind-boggling moment with a couple of rings that will leave you believing teleportation must certainly be real. You’ll genuinely find yourself in disbelief. • A disappearing animal that will do nothing short of mystifying you. Seriously, you’ll be trying to figure out where it went for months. These godfathers of magic are ingenious and inventive, creating a show unlike any other show you’ll see. The kinds of things these two can think up are nothing less than astonishing and may even convince you that their magic is more than an illusion. Make sure you make it to your seat with a bit of time to spare because, as if being an iconic illusionist isn’t enough, Penn uses his musical talents to create a bit of ambience in the room before the curtain even opens. –Em Jurbala

What a Difference a Day Makes This natural wonder is only hours away from the Las Vegas Strip So you’ve checked into your hotel and you’re planning the perfect day. Would it surprise you to know you are literally only two hours away from enjoying one of the most spectacular natural wonders in the world? But yes, in about 120 minutes, you could be enjoying a zipline, amazing views from the Skywalk and so much more at the West Rim of the Grand Canyon, just one of the areas you can explore at Grand Canyon West. If you haven’t yet experienced Skywalk, make that your priority during your

day trip; the 10-foot-wide glass bridge extends 70 feet above the canyon, and you’ll really feel as if you’re floating. Yes, it can be a bit disorienting, but it’s like nothing you’ve ever experienced before. And once you’ve checked this off your list, schedule a zipline adventure, where you’ll soar 500 feet above the floor of a side canyon for more than a half-mile. Another day-trip possibility (it takes a few hours longer) is Peach Springs along historic Route 66. Here you’ll be able to schedule a whitewater rafting trip on
the Colorado River (check the weather reports first) or a helicopter tour deep beneath the West Rim. You can also opt to go hiking, off-roading, fishing and hunting. Best of all, after all this you get to return to your hotel room with plenty of time left to enjoy the rest of your stay. It really is the best of both worlds. And remember: Take pictures. Passing the Torch Iconic entertainer surpasses Elvis’ performance record at historic venue
Barry Manilow never met Elvis Presley, but he did stay in the original Elvis Suite when Westgate Las Vegas was The Hilton. “It was an older suite, but it was huge,” Manilow told Las Vegas Magazine in an exclusive interview. “It was the entire floor, the entire 30th floor, so I did get a sense of where he actually stayed when he was there.” The 30th floor was remodeled shortly after Manilow’s Hilton 1985 debut. He stays in the current Elvis Suite when he flies into Vegas for his Barry Manilow: The Hits Come Home shows. For Manilow, it was love at first sight when he saw the stage where The King reigned for 636 shows (Last year, Manilow broke the King’s record at the property). Arenas enable him to take his music to the masses, but he considers the stage and audience capacity at the International Theater perfect for what he does. “I like traveling into the audience,” said Manilow. “I have trouble being as intimate as I want to be with an arena. It’s fun and it’s exciting, but it’s a whole different kind of feeling than the Westgate. The Westgate is the perfect room for me. Out of all the rooms that I’ve ever played, this is the one for me. If I was building one for myself, this is the size that I would have built.” Anyone who’s witnessed Manilow perform “Copacabana” at the venue would agree, as set design and a flight of stairs allow Manilow to perform above the audience as he sings of music, passion and fashion. It’s a place where Fanilows the world over can make a pilgrimage to their favorite singer, where songs transport them to happier times and longtime fans dance as if the decades since “Daybreak” never happened. “These people are so happy, and they’re all ages,” Manilow says. “That’s why I still do it. Everything changed because I realized that’s why I’m on that stage. That’s why I’m there. It’s to make them feel great. It’s to make them forget their cancer and their divorces, and if they lost their job.” –Matt Kelemen

For the Love of Tequila
Celebrate National Margarita Day at destinations around the city Eight decades and counting, the margarita remains one of the top-selling cocktails, so of course this drink deserves its own day. Celebrate the tequila-based cocktail on National Margarita Day on Feb. 22 by trying some of the city’s most delicious versions. Start at Hussong’s Cantina at The Shoppes at Mandalay Place—this brand claims to be home of the original margarita, invented in its first location in Ensenada, Mexico, in 1941. It serves up a classic recipe in the Original Margarita, a mix of Jose Cuervo reposado, triple sec, agave nectar and lime juice. If you’re with your sweetie, order the shareable Romance Margarita, 64 ounces of Hornitos reposado tequila, triple sec, organic agave nectar, lime juice, strawberry purée, banana liqueur and Grand Marnier. For one of the best margaritas in town (according to this writer who’s done the research), head to Sala 118 at The Venetian. Italian-inspired cocktails are the name of the game at this lounge, but the twist they put on the margarita works perfectly. Using what the good lord gave him “I was baptized in rock ’n’ roll,” says Troy Romzek, head entertainer at 1923 Prohibition Bar at The Shoppes at Mandalay Place. You can catch the born musician every Friday and Saturday nights at the speakeasy hot spot during the NOLA Nights show—a New Orleans-inspired party where Romzek plays the piano and sings jazz and blues. “When I was 10 years old, I went to see Bruce Springsteen,” Romzek recalls. “I walked away from the concert going,

‘Oh my god, I have to figure out how to do that!’” Romzek spent the next two decades in entertainment, including acting and playing in bands at clubs around L.A. “I was able to flip this music thing into a living,” he says. Three years ago, Romzek moved to Las Vegas to expand his career and ended up joining 1923 Prohibition Bar. “You ain’t gonna find an atmosphere like this,” he says. “We have a beautiful place. Wally’s Wine & Spirits serves dishes with a sprinkle of decadence There is no doubt that Wally’s Wine & Spirits is just as billed, with those walls of bottles stretching from floor to ceiling around the restaurant at Resorts World Las Vegas. But those walls don’t tell the whole story, as a bar, cheese counter, kitchen and more racks of wine are tucked around the huge space. Outside, a laid-back patio testifies to the California origins of the restaurant, where the Beverly Hills and Santa Monica locations have been legendary for years, and hugely popular among the glitterati. Wally’s Vegas has proven nearly as popular with new guests pouring in from not only California, but worldwide. Once seated, drinks are a must, whether it’s a great glass of wine (and there are many choices available by the glass) or a signature cocktail. For brunch, choose from French toast, a decadent dish with oven-roasted brioche bread pudding, lemon whipped ricotta and roasted stone fruit; salmon avocado toast with poached eggs; and steak and eggs, featuring

Creekstone beef, sunny-side up eggs and red chimichurri sauce. The lunch menu is truly appealing, with such appetizers as the wood oven baked brie. Slices of baguette are laid with a fermier brie, truffle butter and truffle honey, with shaved burgundy truffles on top. It’s a fragrant mouthful that gets your palate ready for the rest of your meal. And if you’re a truffle fan, you are in such luck, as the truffles don’t only land there! There are several pizzas on the lunch and dinner menu, from a luscious truffle pizza to a white pizza, with pear,

Roquefort cheese, bacon and a champagne vinegar gastrique. It’s a pretty presentation with incredible flavors. Choose from a range of sandwiches, including the signature Wally’s Hero, on a ciabatta roll stuffed with provolone, Genoa ham, mortadella, capicola, prosciutto, pepperoncini, and tomatoes. With that variety of flavor, no wonder it’s a favorite. Even the grilled cheese has a little extra—aged Gruyére and gouda with shallot chutney on country bread. If you’re in the mood for a burger, Wally’s version features wagyu and smoked gouda, along with heirloom tomatoes and caramelized onions. And get the fries! Dinner is highlighted by several truffle dishes, such as a truffle Caesar salad, the truffle pizza, baked brie, truffle Bolognese and truffle gnocchi. Wally’s uses French black truffles, with Italian white truffles available for an extra cost. Truffle Bolognese combines a veal truffle bianco ragù with Vesuviotti pasta with shaved truffle and aged Parmesan, while truffle gnocchi covers pillowy ricotta gnocchi with an abundance of braised wild mushrooms, Parmesan and grated truffle. It’s a personal favorite. Larger entrées range from the signature, shareable Hundred Dollar Chicken, a whole bird with truffle chicken jus and shaved truffle, to New Zealand lamb chops, filet mignon and wagyu tomahawk. Pan-seared king salmon and saffron lobster risotto add a smooth touch to the mains. Could there be truffles on the dessert menu? Well, no. But what they do have is just as good—dessert by the glass! Louis XIII cognac, anyone? In addition to cognac, there are sweet wines, brandies, sherry and more. For a more traditional dessert, enjoy an apple tarte Tatin, or the chocolate board, with dark and milk chocolate, fruit and nuts.

Marc Anthony had an amazing 2023. A new wife, a new son and a Grammy for his latest studio album, Pa’lla Voy, amounted to a trifecta of high points for the “Vivir Mi Vida” singer who lives his life, as the song suggests, in the moment to understand the future. Anthony’s dedication to music helped him avoid pitfalls that often accompany fame, and helped evolve the styles that formed his musical foundation into the contemporary sound he creates today. Born in the Bronx, Anthony’s Puerto Rican parents named him after Mexican singer Marco Antonio Muniz, and his formative years coincided with the 1970s salsa explosion in New York City that made stars out of Willie Colón, Héctor Lavoe and Rubén Blades. Anthony’s father, Felipe, played guitar and raised his son to sing in both Spanish and English. The rise of electronic-oriented, freestyle dance music coincided with Anthony entering adulthood. He wrote a hit for singer Sa-Fire, “Boy, I’ve Been Told,” and formed a friendship with Little Louie Vega that would culminate in 1991 collaborative album When the Night Is Over. Latin bandleader Tito Puente, a huge influence on Anthony, performed on several tracks, and album single “Ride on the Rhythm” rode to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart. Anthony pivoted toward salsa after he and Vega opened for Puente at Madison Square Garden in 1992. Contemporary urban and house music styles informed the approach Anthony brought to RMM Records. His 1993 debut solo album featured a song composed by his father (“El Último Beso”) and a cover of Juan Gabriel’s 1986 hit “Hasta Que Te Conoci” that raised his profile and created demand on the concert circuit, where he would tour in support of Blades. In 1994, he was named Tropical/Salsa New Artist of the Year by Billboard. His Grammy-nominated 1995 album Todo a Su Tiempo reached the top of the charts and begat three No. 1 Tropical Airplay hits before being named Billboard’s Tropical/Salsa Album of the Year. He’d win the first of four Grammys when 1997’s Contra la Corriente was recognized as Best Tropical Latin Album. That was the year Latin crossover music broke big in the States, and Anthony ascended to the celebrity status he maintains today. His marriage to Jennifer Lopez made him a mainstream media figure, which was not enough to make his film debut as Lavoe in biopic El Cantante a hit. Still, no one else could have portrayed the tragic salsa legend in performance the way Anthony did. Unlike the late Lavoe, Anthony did not become mired in substance abuse and depression. A minority owner of the Miami Dolphins since 2009, he exemplifies how to live life excellently. He married 2021 Miss Universe Paraguay Nadia Ferreira in January 2023, and in June they welcomed baby Marquitos, giving special resonance to the lyrics of “Vivir Mi Vida” as Anthony sings them on his current Historia Tour: “I’m going to laugh, I’m going to dance/ To live my life. … I’m going to laugh, I’m going to enjoy.”

Adults and kids can swim with the fishes at Silverton Casino Lodge’s Mermaid School I don’t know if you were like me when I was a kid and jumped in any pool … I would pretend that I was a mermaid and would squeeze my legs and feet
together imagining it was a tail, and I would cut through the waters just like the mythical creature. Does that sound familiar?
Well, pretend no more! Cut through actual waters (in this case, the 117,000-gallon aquarium at Silverton Casino Lodge), don colorful tail and fins, and live out your mermaid fantasy at the property’s popular Mermaid School. There is no experience required for Mermaid School—just a love for mermaids, fish and water and a little

The class is about 90 minutes long and entails (get it?!) 30 minutes of tail and fin fitting, instruction and photo taking, 30 minutes inside the aquarium and a 30-minute behind-the-scenes tour. “It’s everyone’s dream to be a mermaid, and your dream is coming true!” said Sierra Gomez, mermaid and instructor. • The first 30 minutes: Getting ready. Choose what tail you want to wear (sizes kids 4 all the way up to an adult 3X). The tail fits like a tight skirt going from the ankles to above the stomach. Next, you fit the fins on your feet, which act like the tip of the mermaid tail and help you move through the waters. Find prosperity and luck at Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens exemplifies the powerful meaning behind the Year of the Dragon,” said designer Ed Libby. Enter through the East Bed, and a pathway flanked by golden dragons and bamboo stalks leads to a pagoda where you’ll have a clear view of the West Bed. No matter where you enter this year’s Lunar New Year display at Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, you’ll be impressed. to a pond below. And more than 8,000 scales were hand-placed on the dragon. To one side is a 30-foot tall, intricately detailed representation of the Temple of Six Banyan Trees, a famous Buddhist Temple that dates back many centuries. Here you’ll find the Garden Table, where you can reserve a table for lunch or dinner and dine with an unparalleled view. Noodles, the resort’s pan-Asian restaurant, presents special prix fixe menus for each meal, with only two seatings for lunch and two seatings for dinner each day. The North Bed is spectacular, with the Chinese god of wealth, Caishen, sitting in the center with a pot of gold in his lap. Frolicking on his sides in front of golden money trees are gorgeously clad children. Behind, LED screens burst with festive fireworks, and Chinese lanterns float overhead. On the other side of the East Bed a traditional lion dance is taking place, attended by more joyful children watching from around a colorful red bridge. The large lions may fool you at first into thinking they are static, but soon will begin moving their heads and bodies. Overhead, strings of fireworks promise a festive end to the parade. Ensure a more fortunate year and view this attraction by March 2, when the current display will begin to be switched out for the spring exhibition.

In its current career phase, Chicago is getting stronger every day By Matt Kelemen
It may seem like Chicago is enjoying a career resurgence, but the brass-driven band has never taken a break substantial enough to be considered a hiatus. Chicago is one of the few acts that performed every year during the pandemic, playing The Venetian in 2020 right before the stages of the Strip went dark and returning to the concert circuit in June 2021. “We are so blessed to have enjoyed a legacy that
seems still to be a timeless one,” said trombonist and founding member James Pankow in a late-January interview with Las Vegas Magazine. “And it’s about this music. Never in our wildest dreams would we have expected this music
38 | 2.18.24 Las Vegas Magazine
to become so much of a soundtrack (to the lives) of millions and millions of people. We are, over a half a century later, doing sell-out business. People can’t get enough of this stuff.”
“This stuff” started out when Chicago college students Pankow, saxophonist Walter Parazaider, trumpet player Lee Loughnane, keyboardist Robert Lamm and guitarist Terry Kath
teamed up with drummer Danny Seraphine to form a band that would become Chicago Transit Authority. Bassist Peter Cetera completed the band’s classic lineup, and they released

their debut in 1968. Songs such as Lamm’s “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” and “Questions 67 and 68” continue to be part of sets today of the band
that shortened its name to Chicago by 1969. Political activism was a priority at the time, but the jazzrock arrangements that characterized Chicago’s songs became the signature
sound that Pankow remains proud of to this day. Pankow composed hits such as “Just You ‘N’ Me” and “(I’ve Been) Searchin’ So Long,” as well as the suite “Ballet for a Girl in
Buchannon,” which included classics such as “Make Me Smile” and “Colour My World.” Kath, who passed away in 1978, provided the original vocals on most of those tracks. Now vocals are provided by Neil Donell, Loren Gold and Lamm. Parazaider has retired, but Pankow and Loughnane have no shortage of energy to apply to Chicago and The Venetian. “I believe this is our eighth residency, and it’s just gotten better and better and better,” said Pankow. “We feel very much at home in The Venetian. It’s a wonderful property. We get treated so well and it’s such a beautiful showroom. Anybody would love to perform in the Venetian Theater. It’s just perfect acoustically; ambience through the roof. There’s not a bad seat in the house.” It’s also the perfect staging point for Chicago’s 2024 tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. The bands have created a strong touring bond in the past few years, although Pankow has found the show-ending all-star jams a bit hazardous due to EW&F bassist Verdine White’s physical stage performances. Still, he says, those risks are worth taking. “We do a finale with both bands onstage, and it is amazing,” said Pankow. “We’re going to be all over the country this summer, and we hope to see everybody when we’re in their town.”

Check out these hot spots to eat, drink and be merry By Kiko Miyasato
With more than seven decades of history in Las Vegas, the Golden Nugget still shines as one of the star properties along the Fremont Street Experience. The huge property has everything a guest could want—restaurants, nightlife, gambling, entertainment and one of the coolest features in the whole city, its pool complex called The Tank, which features a 200,000-gallon shark
40 | 2.18.24 Las Vegas Magazine
tank with various species of sharks. (You can even take a waterslide ride through the tank!) One could never get bored, hungry or thirsty at the Golden Nugget with its vast array of options. But lucky for you, we’ve helped narrow down the choices. In this feature, we’ll shine the spotlight on three of our favorite spots to explore for food, drink and fun.
If a night out in Las Vegas means drinking and dancing, we suggest skipping the megaclubs and trying Troy Liquor Bar. This nightclub is way more intimate in size, but the fun you’ll have here is huge. With live DJs and VIP tables, Troy operates exactly like all the other nightclubs in Vegas, but there’s bonuses at this spot.
Troy Liquor Bar courtesy photo
One, you can gamble at table games on the balcony; and two, let’s talk about that balcony—spacious and overlooking the famed FSE! At Troy, one of the best bonuses is its bottle service: the prices here won’t break your bank. For only $299 you can get a bottle of Tito’s vodka and one bottle of Moët & Chandon Imperial Brut champagne. In the world of Vegas nightlife, this is a deal that can’t be beat.
Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse
Stepping inside this hidden-gem steakhouse instantly transports you to a special evening, as understated elegance mixes with a great balance of romantic vibes and social fun. Vic & Anthony’s also offers some of the best cuts of meat in the city. Here you can order three options that’ll melt in your mouth: the 8-ounce Snake River Farms rib cap, the A5 Kobe and the A5 Japanese wagyu filet mignon. The steakhouse also offers an impressive specialty cocktails list.
Chart House
For a special experience, book one of the tables on the mezzanine level by calling 702.386.8288.
While Chart House (found in the Rush Tower) is a nice spot for dinner, we suggest this spot for some cocktails and light bites in the bar and lounge area. The draw here is a mesmerizing one—a 75,000-gallon aquarium with hundreds of fish. Plus, you can’t beat happy hour from 4-6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Enjoy $8 cocktails like the pomegranate martini and the mango mojito, $5 domestic beers and $6 import beers, $8 glasses of wine, and $7 premium spirits like Dewar’s Scotch and Bulleit bourbon. Nosh on yummy dishes from $7$11 like seared ahi nachos, firecracker shrimp, fish tacos and prime rib sliders.
