Live entertainment in Las Vegas is always evolving, but that’s not to say it’s completely changed from the old days. Yes, there are plenty of concerts and residencies that feature some of today’s most popular and influential performers in state-of-the-art theaters that are a far cry from the showrooms of old. But at the same time, Las Vegas still embraces the past. This week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine is a direct reflection of that.
This week sees the return of Carrie Underwood to her Reflection: The Las Vegas Residency at Resorts World Las Vegas, a show that redefi nes what is possible in a Vegas production—everything from water features and aerialists to a flaming Jeep and ribbon dancers (“Premier Performer,” p. 32). Also this week, music powerhouse 311 arrives to deliver two unforgettable concerts at Dolby Live at Park MGM (“Attitude of Gratitude,” p. 34).
If old Vegas is more to your liking, head straight to Horseshoe Las Vegas, where the Queen of Burlesque, Dita Von Teese, has brought back the spirit of Jubilee! with Dita Las Vegas: A Jubliant Revue, complete with original costumes from that long-running showgirl spectacular (“Talent With Plenty of Tease,” p. 12). And fans wanting a serious dose of ’60s nostalgia have to head to Golden Nugget this week, where Tommy James and the Shondells will remind everyone just how many immortal hits they’ve given the world (“They’re So Mony,” p. 20).
Other entertainment options include Tape Face at MGM Grand (“Miming and Memories,” p. 17 ), adults-only romp ROUGE at The STRAT (“Risqué Business,” p. 36 ), and the family-friendly Blue Man Group at Luxor, which is adding some new material (“More Than Words,” p. 14).
Let us entertain you! No matter the era.

It’s a wonderful world of glitz, glamour and vintage Vegas inside the showroom at Horseshoe Las Vegas, where burlesque queen Dita Von Teese delivers Dita Las Vegas: A Jubilant Revue
She reawakens the spirit of former showgirl spectacular Jubilee!, a show which ran in the same theater for decades when the property was Bally’s, and puts her own spin on the art form that helped define this city’s entertainment landscape. The raven-haired beauty even wears original Jubilee! costuming created by iconic designer Bob Mackie, including those towering, feather-filled headdresses.
Von Teese enters from the ceiling to start the show and then slowly goes back up and disappears before reappearing again along with the rest of the dolled-up cast as they descend a grand staircase to a jazzed-up version of Elvis’ “Viva Las Vegas.” The show’s sets are nothing short of dazzling, taking audiences on a journey through re-creations of the bottom of the ocean, a tropical forest, a French-inspired boudoir, a ballroom, a three-ring circus and more. All the while the stage is filled with athletic male dancers and buxom burlesque queens in all shapes and sizes.
Von Teese joins various vignettes, giving fans a chance to catch the sweet
and sultry dance moves that made her famous, whether she’s wearing tight leather and latex, dressed in pasties and a glittery thong as she swirls around in a huge champagne glass, or donning a cowboy hat and chaps while straddling and riding a pink velvet mechanical bull.
Music here is familiar, as songs made famous by Madonna, Prince, George Michael, Elvis and more are turned into fun, old-school swing and jazz sounds. Hightech visuals make their way into Dita Las Vegas, too. One perfect example is a number where Von Teese is stretched out on a sofa displaying her impressive curves while her outfit keeps changing to the beats of the music—thanks to some clever lighting techniques.
Other stand-out numbers include a cheeky tribute to longtime Vegas entertainer Liberace and some boisterous and fun stage time with famous burlesque performer Dirty Martini.
If you ever wondered what this city’s classic entertainment looked and felt like, Dita Las Vegas: A Jubilant Revue is a perfect way to get that perspective while being utterly fascinated with the beauty and talent that reigns on the stage. –Kiko Miyasato

There’s a lot of genius that goes into the making of the Blue Man Group show that most people don’t even think about. For starters, there’s the look of the Blue Men themselves—all wear understated custom black jackets, pants and boots, about as muted an ensemble as one could imagine. But it’s brilliant, as it enables the audience to focus only on the faces of the performers (and the various items they experience during a typical show).
That’s only the beginning of the ingenuity at work here. Even before the show starts, a silent radio gets the crowd in a friendly, communal state of mind by flashing messages of congratulations, birthdays, and more. By the end of this segment, you’ll feel like part of one big community, a feeling that only amplifies once the Blue Men emerge, making sounds and music from the most unusual of objects.
The feeling of discovery is the ongoing theme here, whether it’s finding out the decibel level possible from eating Cap’n Crunch, figuring out how to access an iPhone, or how many marshmallows you can fit in your mouth. (Spoiler alert: It’s a lot !)
Speaking of discovery, longtime fans of the show (this writer has been eight times and counting!) are sure to be thrilled to learn that, starting this year, the show is adding new components to the lineup. The bad news? The iconic Twinkie segment (called “The Feast”), which involves an audience volunteer, “poncho seating” for those closest to the stage and the effects of eating the snack cake on the Blue Men, is saying goodbye. The good news? A new segment is taking its place, this time for two audience participants. The company is very mum on the changes, so you’ll have to buy a ticket to find out.
But c’mon—it’s the Blue Man Group! You were going anyway, right? Those compelling beats, courtesy of a live band, only serve to propel the audience to its feet, and by the time the lights come on, you will truly feel altered—just more of the genius of Blue Man Group. –Ken Miller

It was one of the more memorable moments in the history of America’s Got Talent. When Tape Face emerged onstage, he could not introduce himself, given the signature piece of tape that covers his mouth. It made for a very awkward introduction to a man who would, in just a few short minutes, become a superstar. The fact that he did it without ever speaking and using household items to comedic effect only magnified the effect. Tape Face would not win his season of AGT,
Photo by Colin Boulterbut would quickly vault to the echelon of successful Las Vegas Strip performers, first appearing at Flamingo and later at various venues at Harrah’s Las Vegas. He’s now making audiences laugh at his new digs at MGM Grand, and if you haven’t experienced his show before, make sure to rectify that error this week.
This is a show to set the whole world laughing. As Tape Face brings audience members on stage to either engage them in staple gun combat or assist him in
various competitions or demonstrations, the sense of wonder and surprise never ends. Just be warned: he brings a lot of audience members onstage, and that may also include you, so be ready and willing; you won’t regret it and neither will your family members, who are sure to be howling with laughter at your predicament. –Ken

Music superstar continues to redefine herself with latest Las Vegas Strip production at intimate nightlife hot spot
In nearly every decade since the late ’80s, pop music sensation Kylie Minogue made her mark on the music scene. You can add this decade to that list, as Minogue is redefining the residency show with Kylie Minogue: More Than Just a Residency, a one-of-a-kind production at Voltaire Belle de Nuit at The Venetian (she plays March 8-9 and 15-16). Minogue talked to Las Vegas Magazine ’s Kiko Miyasato about what this show means to her.
Why did you choose to do your first U.S. residency show in Las Vegas?
I always thought I would have a residency in Vegas. I’ve toured most of the world with various shows over the years. In 2005, my Showgirl Tour was a nod to Parisian cabaret and Vegas showgirls. In 2011, my Aphrodite Tour had all the bells and whistles, including precision water fountains throughout the show. Everyone was saying back then that this was a Vegas show. It was absolutely crazy to travel with the fountains and everything, but it was totally amazing. As time rolled on, one of the shows I was offered in Vegas was Voltaire. It appealed to me because of its glamour, decadence and intimacy. It brought to mind
venues of the past where Elvis and Sinatra may have played. Designed by Tony Award-winner Derek McLane, it was all a very appealing offer to finally do a residency in Vegas. The irony is that it is quite the opposite of those big shows I mentioned, rather it is about the close connection with the audience. We really become one wild and wonderful group through this show.
What are your thoughts about performing inside the new Voltaire Belle de Nuit, more of a nightclub space, versus on a traditional concert stage?
It has presented some different challenges! I am known for big shows, so I still somehow managed to put a decent-size show in this snug room! The venue is like wonderland in a much more analog way than some other venues I’ve played, and I think this adds to the palpable emotion in the audience.
Do you have a message to your fans that are coming to see you here?
This really is a first for me and for my fans, so get ready to have an amazing night!

Whether you grew up this century or last, chances are you know the work of Tommy James and the Shondells. Singer and guitarist James, who formed the Shondells in the early ’60s, is responsible for some of the most known songs across the generations.
If you’ve heard “Hanky Panky,” that was his first hit. And if you thought Billy Idol and Tiffany came up with “Mony, Mony” and “I Think We’re Alone Now,” respectively, you’d be a little off, as those were mid-’60s pop smashes for
the group. With the song “Crimson and Clover,” the group began a more rock-oriented, psychedelic slant, releasing hits like “Crystal Blue Persuasion” and Sweet Cherry Wine.”
Although Tommy James and the Shondells disbanded in 1970, they had a lasting effect in the music industry, with more than 300 artists covering the hits. “Crystal Blue Persuasion” was even featured in the wildly popular Breaking Bad in 2012.
Today, James has a busy touring
schedule, traveling across the country with the Shondells, which has had many members throughout the decades, and appears in downtown Las Vegas at the Golden Nugget this week. No matter how you connect to the band, it’s a great chance to see a music legend and find yourself saying, “I didn’t know they did this song!” –Nina King

You’re likely to see the world in an entirely new way after a visit to Las Vegas’ ARTE MUSEUM . This unique, incredibly transportive attraction brings the latest visual, audio and olfactory technologies together in a glorious way, creating an extremely relaxing, tranquil space where meditation and reflection are not only encouraged, but are also practically guaranteed.
Created by the Korea-based digital design company d’strict, ARTE MUSEUM re-creates nature scenes in a way that feels a bit disorienting at first. In one room, you find yourself at the bottom of a towering waterfall; in another, you feel like you’re in the middle of a forest as its creatures romp and play around you; in another, you stand on a shore as waves crash and roll in. (It’s so convincing, you might be tempted to take your shoes off!)
If you’re on the fence about whether to bring the kids, check this out: At one installation featuring a screen with unique animals that inhabit a jungle, your child can sit at a table and, with crayons, draw their own unique animal. That drawing is given to a museum employee, who will scan it. Then look up at the screen: Your child’s drawing has been brought to digital life, joining the other animals. It’s an extremely cool, personal touch that makes each visit to ARTE MUSEUM unique for each guest. –Ken Miller

Pub can keep you busy all year round with its impressive beer program
Beer, beer, beer—it’s all here! Pub 365 at Tuscany Suites & Casino is a mecca for any beer lover. While in Las Vegas, if you’re looking for a place that will satisfy the novice or expert beer drinker, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better experience.
Just as the name says, Pub 365 has a beer for every day of the year, with 61 of them on draft that are constantly rotated and updated. “We bring in new beers, on average, about five to 10 per week,” says Jose Martinez, lead bartender for Pub 365. “We also have our unicorn menu.”
The unicorn menu features “seasonal, hard-to-find in this region, specialty, rare beers,” Martinez says. Names like Bicycle Day from Great Notion Brewing, Bourbon County Brand Fourteen Stout from Goose Island Beer Co., 120 Minute IPA 2022 from Dogfish Head Craft Brewing and Dead ‘N’ Dead from Rogue Ales, all make an appearance, and the list goes on and on. Pub 365 also caters to the local beer scene, with
nearly 30 taps dedicated to selections from breweries like Able Baker Brewing, Bad Beat Brewing, Tenaya Creek Brewery and Beer Zombies Brewing.
With the overwhelming selection of beers, we asked Martinez for some suggestions: “The Duck Hunter
IPA,” he says. It’s brewed locally by Beer Zombies and it’s a great, classic IPA for any time of the year. And he suggests trying one of Pub 365’s beer flights to get the best sampling of their selections. The flights come with four choices in either bartender’s choice,
local breweries or light to dark. “I’ll try the beers with you,” he says, smiling. “I like to taste beers together.” Rest assured that all bartenders at Pub 365 are fully schooled in all things beer, many, including Martinez, certified as a cicerone.
In addition to beer, Pub 365 offers an impressive assortment of specialty cocktails, too. Two of our faves include the Tequila Reposado Old-Fashioned
Download the Pub 365 app to sign up for Club 365, the beer rewards program. Every time you order a beer at Pub 365, log it in your account. Drink enough beer and you’ll win prizes! There’s no time limit or expiration date, so even if you’re a visitor, you can participate. Enjoy the twice-daily happy hour from 3-6 p.m. and 10 p.m.-midnight. Specials include $5 well drinks, $5 house wine, $3.65 draft beers and $2 off select dishes.
The last Thursday of the month, enjoy Thirsty Thursdays, where you can order select packaged and canned beers for just $3.65. Pub 365 offers monthly beer-pairing dinners. The next one is March 16 at 7 p.m., with local brewery Beer Zombies Brewing.
with Casamigos reposado, orange bitters and sugar. “It’s simple, but smoother than using bourbon or rye,” Martinez says. Another twist on a classic is the Mezcal Rita with mezcal, triple sec, Grand Marnier, lime juice, agave and a sugar rim. “The mezcal gives the cocktail a smokier flavor than tequila,” he says. The sugar rim is a tasty touch compared to the classic salt rim on a margarita.
“We bring in new beers, on average, about five to 10 per week. We also have our unicorn menu.”

Besides its beer, Pub365 has also garnered local fans for its food, mainly its “locally world-famous tacos.” There are three in an order with choices of carne asada, fish, shrimp or chicken tinga.

Edward Tracy, general manager for Brasserie B by Bobby Flay at Caesars Palace, hates to admit it’s been more than 30 years since he began his career in the restaurant industry, but it’s a career that’s become a passion, he says.
“I’ve been in restaurants for three-plus decades and in every role from sous chef to general manager,” says the Detroit native. Tracy has worked at restaurants from his hometown and California to the Bahamas and Las Vegas. He first came
here in 2010 to work at chef Michael Mina’s different establishments. After some time, he ended up leaving to work in other spots around the country before eventually returning to Vegas last year to help open chef Bobby Flay’s newest French-inspired restaurant.
“Brasserie B has a very unique energy when it’s busy,” Tracy says. “The hum of a restaurant—they did a fantastic job with the design so when the room is full it just feels alive.” And it’s Tracy’s job to

When Tracy isn’t at Brasserie B by Bobby Flay, you can find him tending to his garden with his wife. They grow their own peppers and make their own hot sauces. And in June, you’ll also find him at UNLV working on getting his master’s degree in business management. “I enjoy the constant learning, and improving myself,” he says. –Kiko Miyasato

Carrie Underwood will not be performing in Las Vegas on March 10, the night of her birthday. She will be performing in Reflection: The Las Vegas Residency the night before, though, so a round of “Happy Birthday” from the audience between songs would be appropriate. American Idol ’s Piscean princess has played more than 25 shows at Resorts World Theater since her Reflection premiered in December 2021. She now reigns as one The Strip’s premier performers.
It’s been a long drive to the top for the girl from Muskogee, Okla., who sang along with Reba McEntire songs in the car. “I loved all her sassy songs like ‘Fancy,’ ‘Why Haven’t I Heard from You,’” said Underwood in an exclusive interview with Las Vegas Magazine. “She gives the sass real good.” Reba’s sass was complemented by Martina McBride’s class as influences on Underwood. “I sang ‘A Broken Wing’ and ‘Independence Day’ at every talent show that I performed at, ever,” she said.
By Matt Kelemen“And then maybe like Faith Hill. She’s another one that I feel I sing a lot of her stuff, and she was also my first concert. She was opening for Alan Jackson at the time, so that was my first concert ever.”
Those influences shaped Underwood into a singer destined to win the fourth season of American Idol. She was one of the few champions who parleyed a recording contract prize into sustained success and
a slew of hits. To date, she’s had 14 No. 1s on Billboard ’s Hot Country Songs Chart, won eight Grammys, and collected dozens of awards from the Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association. Her Vegas residency celebrates all of that and more. “We try to keep the Reflection show to be a greatest hits kind of show,” Underwood said. “My guitar player, I think, coined it perfectly when he was like, ‘This is like an awards-show greatest-hits moment,’ because every single song we try to have a lot of production, a lot of visuals to go along with it. Every single song in Reflection could stand alone.”
Those stand-alone songs behind Underwood’s success are the result of collaborative relationships with top Nashville
songwriters. Not everyone who wins a national talent show will have chemistry with composers, but Underwood was fated to find people like David Garcia, who produced 2018 album Cry Pretty, and Hillary Lindsey, who wrote 11 country chart toppers for Underwood like “Jesus Take the Wheel,” “Wasted” and “Just a Dream.”
“We have a lot of fun working together,” Underwood said. “I feel like everything’s easy when we get together to write, or even when David and I are in the studio with musicians or recording, or whatever. I feel like it’s just easy and fun, and you never know where the day is going to take you, but it’s going to be a good day, and I feel like that’s the best way to work, when you really like to go into work.”

The secret to 311’s success after more than three decades with no lineup changes is no secret. Omaha’s finest funk rock sons have remained pro-
By Matt Kelemenductive and successful while musical influences and peers disbanded or disintegrated, delivering performances that are energetic from opening song to
encore. And for hardcore followers and fan club members who make up the 311 Nation, there’s no better way to celebrate the band’s longevity than 311 Day.
311 Days might be more accurate. Only one 311 Day concert every year that ends in an even number (most odd-numbered years are dedicated to
311 Caribbean Cruises) was not enough to meet fan demand, so one concert on or adjacent to the 11th day of the third month of the year became two. Las Vegas has been a host city since 2010, but has been the exclusive destination for 311 Days since 2018.
One of the most durable bands to
come out of the ’90s, 311’s roots go back to 1985 before lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist Nick Hexum and lead guitarist Tim Mahoney could drive. They played in high school bands that covered acts mainly confined to college rock stations of that era such as The Smiths, The Cure and R.E.M.
It was at this time that Hexum and Mahoney began a tradition of lead guitar dueling, trading off licks during a reggae-fied version of garage rock classic “Wild Thing,” that they still thrill 311 fans with at shows while playing songs such as “Beautiful Disaster.” Hexum would start 311 with bassist Aaron “P-Nut” Wills and drummer Chad Sexton in 1988, with Mahoney joining two years later. DJ/vocalist S.A. Martinez, who had guest performed with the band, joined in 1992 to complete the lineup that remains unchanged today.
Wills supplied the band name, police code in Omaha for indecent exposure. Inspired by the late-’80s L.A. scene stoked by Jane’s Addiction, Fishbone and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, 311 had a foundation in funk rock but mixed in healthy doses of hip-hop and reggae. While their first two albums did not chart, 1993 album Music put 311 on the pop culture map as the alternative music wave of the early ’90s crested, opening the door to national exposure, capitalized on via constant touring. 311 was not part of a trend or a regional scene, though. Bands such as Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit would take cues from 311 and enjoy success with rap-rock hybrids, but by the time of the band’s 1995 self-titled album and the success of its single “Down,” a following usually characteristic of jam bands was forming. 311 closed out the decade with genre-fusing 1999 album Soundsystem, manifesting the musicians’ collective philosophy in single “Come Original.”
The band is happy and healthy, with physiques like professional tennis players and energy levels that allow for 40song 311 Day sets. Set lists are mixed up for the 311 Day performances, so truly devoted members of the 311 Nation that attend both concerts get their money’s worth, as well as a weekend of complete immersion in a live act that never lets them down.
The adults-only ROUGE excels as a tribute to the human bodyBy Em Jurbala
What show offers the perfect balance between sidesplitting comedy, impressive variety acts and human sexuality? The clear answer is none other than ROUGE, a high-energy co-ed revue featuring strong men, acrobats and so much more–all presented by the hilarious Dr. Libido and Nurse Naughty, who have a few tricks up their sleeves.
“We tried to take a genre that maybe, sometimes, is not treated or accepted in an artistic way and we wanted to … say that a sexy show can be artistic,” ROUGE director Hanoch Rosènn told Las Vegas Magazine in an exclusive interview. “I tried to do it like poetry; a (tribute) to the human body and to human love, and to treat it all with humor and with all kinds of
ideas and approach. The main idea is that it will touch the normal person whoever (they are). Whoever has this kind of fantasy or this kind of memory or something like that … I really tried to concentrate and to have it for everybody; for men, for women, for gays, for lesbians, for everybody. Everybody will come there and find something there that they can identify with or can laugh about.”
Because of the show’s co-ed nature (and the dynamics that come along with it), it would be hard to leave this show without seeing something you can identify with. There’s a wealth of representation in this show, all done beautifully. One moment you’ll be watching a pair of phenomenal aerialists swinging in sync across the stage, the next you’ll be giggling at a particularly cheeky French Revolution-themed number, then you’ll be rocking out with some crazy horses and their seductive handler.
“It didn’t matter to me so much about the nudity,” Rosènn said. “It is a topless show, that’s true, but for me the biggest compliment is when people say, ‘We didn’t feel that they were
topless.’ I wanted it to be like art.”
Each and every act in ROUGE features some supremely talented performers. When the trio of strongmen take the stage, you’ll have to pick your jaw up off the floor with each new pose they pull off. Fast-paced dance numbers provide plenty of energy in between slow, sultry acts, like a champagne glass performance set to Ariana Grande’s “Dangerous Woman,” to ensure the show never drags.
Also bringing so much life to the show, the comedic co-hosts, played by Zion and Poppy Martyn, quip with the crowd before pulling out an Icarian Games routine of their own—Zion uses his feet to toss Poppy into the air in a thrilling feat of strength, coordination and chemistry.
“I remember, when I was 17 years old and I went to Italy to see the statue of David … and we were standing in front of this statue (for), I think, like, 30 minutes without speaking because it’s so amazing to see this perfection … it’s unbelievable. The last thing you think about is that he’s naked. It’s art. So that’s what I was trying to do in the show,” Rosènn said.
find the Cabinet of Curiosities Bar and Lounge, head down an escalator from the casino floor, where you’ll also find REAL BODIES at Horseshoe Las Vegas and a Las Vegas Monorail station. Tra c is brisk and constant, giving the cocktail lounge decorated with small antiques, bric-abrac and objets d’art a high level of exposure.
It’s a destination, though, with most visitors having
heard about the Cabinet’s inner sanctum and not-sosecret speakeasy, The Lock. Anyone 21-plus can walk into the Cabinet beginning at noon daily and get signature craft cocktails, top-shelf tequila or o -menu improvisations. Revealing a predilection for bourbon may inspire mixologist Gabby (we’re on a first-name basis here) to concoct an Old-Fashioned variation, made with Skrewball peanut butter
whiskey, that tastes like a dessert. Signature drinks include Curious Cosmopolitans, Pink Stone Eggs and Flea Market Martinis, but the most popular menu item is the bourbon-based Festival of Lights homage to flying lantern festivals.
The drink menu is accessible via QR code, as is an online catalog of the curios. Peruse the collection before entering The Lock: Punch a tag number into a smart-
phone and learn a little about the Authentic Animal Teeth Necklaces (No. 1323), Mystical Typewriter (No. 4381), Carved Figural Mask (No. 8181) and Carved Soapstone Cats (No. 1629). It is possible that creative liberties may have been taken with the explanatory captions, or that the author(s) were inspired by Festivals of Lights, or both.
The outer entrance of The Lock (which requires a reservation) looks like a wall safe, with confirmation made through an adjacent, old-fashioned phone. Once giving the password and entering a vestibule, the 2020s gives way to the 1920s, and a puzzle must be solved to get the access code. Remember to pay close attention to details of the door host’s bootlegger stories.
The Lock sends visitors back a century with brick walls, vintage ceiling tile and Charlie Chaplin movies projected onto one side of the room. Lounge chairs and low-volume old-time music
create a perfect ambience for conversation, with a different set of signature drinks on the QR code menus. Even better, a Secret Menu provides the opportunity to fill out personal specifics regarding one’s current mood, flavor preferences, favorite destinations and zodiac sign. The result may be an indescribably delicious bourbon concoction or whiskey sour infused with banana, on top of which your mixologist drizzles syrup on the three-cherry garnish before dropping it in the glass. Take that drink and look closely at the walls for signs of another passageway, another door to the inner sanctum’s inner sanctum.
That room is furnished with more comfy chairs and walls festooned with illuminated paintings depicting scenes and figures of the Renaissance and Enlightenment eras. A mirrored ceiling creates an infinity effect, and the sound system is Bluetooth-accessible, so guests can play music from phones. Talk about the past meeting the present!
There are other speakeasies in Las Vegas, but there are no other speakeasies with a room like this. The Cabinet of Curiosities and The Lock are escape rooms of a different kind where one can experience an atmosphere truly unlike any other on the Strip.
