Raise a Glass

There’s a reason The Hangover was such a monstrous hit when it came out in 2009. Hint: It’s in the name! Because when it comes to Las Vegas, alcohol (and the sheer amount available) continues to be a huge draw. Gamblers at slot machines get free drinks as long as they’re playing; major properties have bars at every corner; every major show has a bar; some hotels still have minibars in the rooms; restaurants up and down the Strip have mixologists hard at work on signature cocktails; the list goes on and on.

This week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine highlights one of the coolest places to check out alcoholic beverages on the entire Strip: Wally’s Wine & Spirits at Resorts World (“The Spirit World,” p. 24). Not only is this a great place for a social meal and a great signature cocktail, it’s also a great place to shop for some of the hardestto-fi nd treasures around, from fi ne vintages to decades-old whiskies.

What goes better with alcohol than a great party? And this week’s issue will guide you to the best shindigs in town, based on your zodiac symbol (“What’s Your Sign?” p. 34).

If you’re a fan of classic rock, this week sees the return of two legendary performers: Sir Rod Stewart at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace (“Good Rockin’ Tonight,” p. 32) and former Eagles member Don Felder at Westgate Las Vegas (“In It For the Long Run,” p. 21).

Mariah Carey fans, meanwhile, will be thrilled to discover she’s performing at Dolby Live at Park MGM (“Vision of Beauty,” p. 17 ).

Human Connection

Explore all sides of human sexuality at this adults-only romp on the Las Vegas Strip

What show offers the perfect balance between sidesplitting comedy, impressive variety acts and human sexuality? The clear answer is none other than ROUGE , a high-energy co-ed revue featuring strong men, acrobats and so much more–all presented by the hilarious Dr. Libido and Nurse Naughty, who have a few tricks up their sleeves.

“We tried to take a genre that maybe, sometimes, is not treated or accepted in an artistic way and we wanted to … say that a sexy show can be artistic,” ROUGE director Hanoch Rosènn told Las Vegas Magazine in an exclusive interview. “I tried to do it like poetry; a (tribute) to the human body and to human love, and to treat it all with humor and with all kinds of ideas and approach. The main idea is that it will touch the normal person whoever (they are). Whoever has this kind of fantasy or this kind of memory or something like that … I really tried to concentrate and to have it for everybody; for men, for women, for gays, for lesbians, for everybody. Everybody will come there and find something there that they can identify with or can laugh about.”

Because of the production’s co-ed nature (and the dynamics that come along with it), it would be hard to leave without seeing something you can identify with. There’s a wealth of representation, all done beautifully. One moment you’ll be watching a pair of phenomenal aerialists swinging in sync across the stage, the next you’ll be giggling at a particularly cheeky French Revolution-themed number, then you’ll be rocking out with some crazy horses and their seductive handler.

“It didn’t matter to me so much about the nudity,” Rosènn said. “It is a topless show, that’s true, but for me the biggest compliment is when people say, ‘We didn’t feel that they were topless.’ I wanted it to be like art.” –Em Jurbala The STRAT, 18+. tickets.thestrat.com

A Cut Above

Indulge in top-quality fine dining at this Strip classic

Las Vegas is ever-evolving and creating new experiences, and while that’s incredibly exciting, it’s also reassuring to know that some things stay the same—and even thrive—in that atmosphere. One of those Las Vegas institutions turned 40 recently: The Steak House at Circus Circus, a restaurant that has not only outlasted so many others, but stays true to its roots, maintaining a classic menu that customers return to again and again. And again.

The dining room itself is exactly what you’d picture in your mind if you’ve never been here (and if you haven’t, why not?): Perfectly appointed tables and leather booths, with a food preparation area right in the middle of the action. You can literally watch your meal being prepared if you so choose, but we’d highly recommend getting to business with the cocktail selection, which hits on the classics you’d associate with a prestigious destination like this: Old-Fashioneds, Manhattans, dirty martinis, you name it.

One of the coolest aspects of The Steak House is just to your left as you enter past the reception area: A dry-aging locker with floor-to-

ceiling windows, allowing you to check out all the cuts you’re about to choose from. All the beef within is Midwestern in origin and aged for 21 days at 37 degrees Fahrenheit.

As you pore over your steak choices, be sure to take advantage of all of the great starters available here. The crab cake is plenty for two and full of huge chunks of the crustacean, while the French onion soup has a topping of Gruyère. And if you really want to go all out, order the Seafood Sensation, a healthy portion of oysters, crab and shrimp that will have the entire table buzzing.

Now on to those classic cuts. Whether you choose the New York strip, porterhouse, filet mignon or ribeye on the bone, be sure to pair it with either a lobster tail or sautéed mushrooms. And if you’re not quite in a steak frame of mind, no problem—there’s lots of surf among the turf, including Alaskan king crab legs, grilled garlic shrimp and salmon filet. For a real treat, opt for the lamb chops, so succulent and flavorful. –Ken Miller Circus Circus. 702.794.3767

Vision of Beauty

Iconic singer takes over the Strip to celebrate groundbreaking album

She needs no introduction, really. She’s one of the most successful recording artists of all time. She’s the “Queen of Christmas.” She’s the diva supreme that everyone knows and loves. Of course, I’m talking about Mariah Carey, who’s back in town for another set of dates for her The Celebration of Mimi residency.

Come ready for a night full of whistle tones, iconic bops and skilled dancers at this show as the music icon celebrates the anniversary of her smash hit 2005 album, The Emancipation of Mimi, which brought you songs like “We Belong Together” and “Fly Like a Bird.”

The songstress has put together a super fan experience at Dolby Live with modern, sleek set pieces, skilled backup vocalists and instrumentalists and personal touches like video components that share a bit about the singer’s road to success. Often pausing to share anecdotes and exchange kind words with the crowd, Carey’s gratitude for her fans truly shines through.

In a particularly striking moment, the chanteuse lounges on a pink chaise in front of a waterfall of pink drapery to sing a few songs while a single dancer personifies the emotions in Carey’s music through just his movements. It’s a beautiful moment to have the privilege to savor. –Em Jurbala

Early Excellence

Start your day right at this beloved café

From breakfast to brunch and lunch, you’re going to find a lot to appreciate at Sadelle’s Café, an import from New York City that has been a huge hit ever since arriving here in 2019.

The restaurant itself is inviting—lots of Tiffany blue highlights, warm, inviting booths and impeccably appointed tables. The waitstaff is attentive and friendly, and always willing to help you out with any questions. You’ll feel instantly welcome here, especially when you start to sip on classic cocktails like Bellinis, mimosas and Bloody Marys.

Breakfast options all stress highest-quality ingredients and fresh flavors. You’ll definitely want to start your experience here with a bagel (your choice between plain, sesame, everything and cinnamon raisin), as Sadelle’s is famous for them— they are produced in-house under the direction of executive sous chef Minesh Mehta. They’re incredibly light and fluffy, a result of the amount of time spent proofing the dough. Follow up with eggs Benedict, pictured, available with either house salmon or ham along with a poached egg and Hollandaise.

One of Sadelle’s biggest sellers is the avocado toast, and for good reason: Avocado is mixed with salt, pepper and lemon juice, on top of which pickled red onions and freshly sliced Fresno peppers and avocado are piled. When you add in sea salt, lemon zest, cilantro and poppy seeds, you have a flavor bomb that you’ll be reluctant to share.

Even something as simple as a grapefruit half gets taken up a notch. This version, called grapefruit cocktail, is given a brûlée top with Sugar in the Raw, caramelized with a blowtorch. For those who love sugar on grapefruit, this is a unique treat.

Make sure to plan a return trip for brunch or lunch. The real signature here is the fried chicken, so delicious with its accompaniment of truffle honey, coleslaw and French fries. But as with breakfast, everything on Sadelle’s menu is worth your time. –Ken Miller

Great Escape

Death Valley resort offers untold possibilities

We know what you’re thinking: Death Valley? In the summer? But hear us out: With the hustle and bustle on the Las Vegas Strip, you can’t deny that the prospect of not having to fight crowds isn’t extremely attractive, and at The Oasis at Death Valley resort complex, that’s exactly what you’ll experience—with all the amenities you would enjoy elsewhere.

The 66-room, AAA Four-Diamond Inn at Death Valley, built in 1927, and the Ranch at Death Valley were recently renovated to the tune of $250 million in

2018, offering a spring-fed pool with bordering café and cabanas; the Tranquility Spa; a fine-dining restaurant and cocktail lounge; a gift shop; and the Borax Museum, rich in the area’s history. To beat the heat, explore the nearby park and opulent Mission Gardens in early morning and evening, taking advantage of the resort’s many pleasures during the day.

The Inn at Death Valley also recently added 22 private, one-bedroom casitas for a whole new level of accommodation. Throughout this gorgeous property you’ll

discover Western art, shaded terraces and views of the Panamint Mountains.

Adding to all this is nearby Furnace Creek Golf Course, the world’s lowest-elevation course at 214 feet below sea level. This 18-hole, par-70 course is framed with palm and tamarisk trees and ranked as one of America’s toughest courses by Golf Digest. What are you waiting for? Death Valley awaits. –Ken Miller

In It for the Long Run

Former Eagles member brings generations of hits to town

What’s that, you say? Can’t a ord tickets to The Eagles’ multidate residency at The Sphere? Or you didn’t act quickly enough and no tickets are available? Well, how about the next best thing? And at a much more a ordable price? Don Felder, at one time a member of that legendary rock group (and who’s a legend in his own right), holds court at Westgate Las Vegas for one night only this week, and while Don Henley and company will not be there, Eagles fans are sure to fi nd plenty to appreciate and enjoy.

Felder, an inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, could stake his claim alone in coming up with the melody for one of the group’s most iconic songs, “Hotel California,” but the curriculum vitae doesn’t stop there. Felder’s influential guitar playing, instantly recognizable to several generations of Eagles fans, is certain to give everyone in the audience goose bumps once he launches into classics like “Already Gone,” “Victim of Love” and “Witchy Woman.”

In 2019, he released his latest

album, American Rock ’n’ Roll, and has played the title track from that album at his most recent shows. Expect his trademark white doubleneck Gibson guitar when he re-creates the ri s from “Hotel California,” and expect inspired playing as Felder takes it to the limit one more time with expert acoustic picking on songs such as “Seven Bridges Road.” –Ken Miller

The Spirit World

Bar, restaurant and retail store is a unique experience

Lovers of fine wines, spirits and foods should make Wally’s Wine & Spirits at Resorts World Las Vegas a must-visit on their itinerary. This beautifully designed destination offers guests a multitude of experiences under one roof—part luxury wine and spirits retailer, part restaurant and bar, and part gourmet deli counter.

“You’re able to come in here and have a whole experience—grab a great bottle of wine or spirit at retail and enjoy it; have an elevated bistro experience; have a great cocktail to start made with seasonal ingredients,” says Phillip Dunn, director of spirits for Wally’s Wine & Spirits. “Wally’s is the best of all worlds.”

We decided to explore the wine and spirit side of Wally’s world for the reader. Since the brand was established in Southern California, it has a huge celebrity connection, and that translates over to the Las Vegas location by way of specialty cocktails. Two popular picks celebrate Las Vegas residents: 1.) The first cocktail is a tribute to longtime local Guy Fieri and longtime Vegas visitor Sammy Hagar, who teamed up to make Santo Tequila. “It’s a really, really, really good product,” says Dunn. You’ll find Santo reposado in the Yuzu Amazing, a riff on the classic whiskey sour. It’s mixed with yuzu and egg white and gives off a hint of oaky flavoring; 2.) The second cocktail is an ode

to new Vegas resident Mark Wahlberg. Using the actor’s new tequila, Flecha Azul, the Albahaca cocktail mixes in ancho chili, basil, aloe vera and grapefruit bitters. There is also the house Old Fashioned, made with Brother’s Bond bourbon from actor Ian Somerhalder, and a mezcal margarita made with Dos Hombres mezcal from Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston.

On the retail side, to get an idea of the special bottles that line Wally’s shelves, Dunn pulled an impressive lineup of rare and special finds, some with eye-popping price tags. The first is a very rare, very in-demand and very limited-made, 1989 Petrus, a 100 per-

cent merlot from the Pomerol estate in France (price available on request). For a cool $40 grand, check out the bottle of 2020 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. “This is one of the most highly sought-after Burgundies in the world,” says Dunn. Another grand bottle from the same vineyard is the excellent vintage and extremely rare 1995 La Tâche, for a cool $12,000. A high-quality, textbook example of a great 100 percent chardonnay is the 2019 Le Montrachet Grand Cru from Remoissenet vineyard. And what would a lineup be without a pick from one of the most popular champagne brands in the world, Vueve Clicquot? The 1990 La Grande Dame,

Albahaca & Yuzu Amazing

a top-10 champagne, is rarely released and considered to be one of the most classic vintages of the 20th century.

Moving on to spirits, find a very rare, highly sought-after bottle of G4 Reposado de Madera Dia de Muertos tequila, loved for its slightly higher 84 proof and additive-free recipe. Throw down some serious dough, $30,000, for the single malt 1958 Shirakawa

Tips/Insider Knowledge

Check out the collection inside the walk-in vault, kept at 58 degrees.

Wally’s cork fee is $50. Rare and vintage bottles make up 25 percent of the bottles for sale; the wine to spirits ratio is about 70/30. Wally’s also works on consignment, which enables the brand to source incredibly rare finds from coveted collections.

Stop by the gourmet deli counter and select from high-end meats and cheeses to make your own charcuterie board. Choose from decadent meats from Italy and mouthwatering cheeses from France and the U.S.

If you want to explore Wally’s collection of bourbons, vodkas, whiskies, tequilas and more, simply ask your server to put together a flight of 2-ounce pours.

On the restaurant side, Wally’s is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Japanese whiskey, another rare find. For a more reasonable price of around $600, The Boss Hog X Commandments whiskey from WhistlePig is a great find at Wally’s since it’s rare and super hard to find on the open market. “This’ll kick ya in the pants,” says Dunn. “So have it over some ice.”

The wine and spirits collections at Wally’s goes on and on ... and on. But pe -

“I think the experience of Wally’s is awe-inspiring if you’ve never seen a wine and spirits shop of this magnitude.”
–Phillip Dunn, director of spirits at Wally’s Wine & Spirits

rusing all the bottles lined across all the walls inside Wally’s is a truly fascinating and fun adventure.

“We’re probably the only place like this on the Strip, that’s reason enough to try us out,” Dunn says. “I think the experience of Wally’s is awe-inspiring if you’ve never seen a wine and spirits shop of this magnitude. It’s well done from a retail layout. You can come in and eat and look at the bottles. It’s almost like having dinner in a wine cellar.” –Kiko Miyasato

Nobu Las Vegas’ celebrated Japanese fusion fare draws dedicated fans and novices alike

In Las Vegas, the Nobu name has long been evident, first with a restaurant at the former Hard Rock, then with the opening of Nobu Hotel and accompanying restaurant at Caesars Palace in 2013. Since then, the popular brand by chef Nobu Matsuhisa has seen many openings in a global expansion, as well as another restaurant here in 2022 at Paris Las Vegas.

The latest Nobu Las Vegas sits in a

Yellowtail jalapeño
Toro tartare with caviar

cozy cobblestoned passage along with other restaurants such as The Bedford by Martha Stewart and Vanderpump à Paris. A large sign affixed to a wooden fence signals the entry to the Japanese restaurant, which features several distinct seating areas, such as a casual courtyard and patio area, and an intimate dining room with a sushi bar at the rear. That room maintains the same open feel as the rest of the restaurant due to large openings where the backs of the circular booths create a short wall of sorts. It all adds up to a lively dinner atmosphere as we imagine a sidewalk café in the city of Paris might have.

The chefs at Nobu are masters in plating and create the most sublime flavors with seemingly simple ingredients and pairings. Some of the most celebrated include the signature tacos, which come in lobster, wagyu and vegetable versions. Although small, they are indeed mighty. Vegetarians and vegans will delight in the fact that Nobu can adapt quite a few items to accommodate both preferences.

You’ll notice a broad range of cold dishes like the classic yellowtail jalapeño, crispy rice with spicy tuna, baby spinach salad with dry miso, and the toro tartare with caviar. Hot dishes include black cod with miso, beef tenderloin toban yaki and free-range chicken with the signature Nobu sauce.

Throughout the meal, enjoy eda-

mame and shishito peppers. (Who doesn’t love the game of spicy chance you play with these beauties?) The salad section of the menu is a dream for vegetarians, presenting eggplant with miso, warm mushroom salad and roasted cauliflower. But items like shrimp and lobster salad with spicy lemon sauce will undoubtedly appeal to almost everyone else. Tempura is a perfect, crunchy bite, with options including seabass and amazu ponzu, vegetarian and luxurious lobster.

For beef lovers, Nobu offers A5 wagyu, both tataki-style and toban yaki-style. And for the sushi fan, find

a good mix of hand rolls and cut maki, from spicy tuna and spicy scallop to soft-shell crab and salmon skin. Nigiri and sashimi range from kanpachi to octopus and sea urchin.

The absolute best way for a novice Nobu-goer to experience Nobu may be with an omakase menu, and you’ll find three options: vegetarian, the signature version, and the over-thetop Paris one. Who knows?

Maybe the Paris presentation may inspire you to head to Nobus in other cities (with Nobu New Orleans, Nobu Bangkok and Nobu Toronto scheduled to open this year), or even cause you to book a return to Vegas.

Sir Rod Stewart is back in Vegas after taking a sentimental journey with ‘Swing Fever’ album

Sir Rod Stewart finds inspiration from the unlikeliest of sources. His ’70s disco megahit, “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy,” a highlight of his Rod Stewart: The Hits Vegas residency, drew fire from critics but endures with more than 300 million Spotify streams to date. His dive into pop standards beginning with 2002’s It Had to Be You: The Great American Songbook kicked o a series that turned Stewart into a steward of classic songwriting. Now his latest album, Swing Fever, has put him and collaborator Jools Holland at the top of the U.K. charts.

The top, as in No. 1. Stewart had last reached No. 1 in the U.S. with 2006 album Still the Same... Great Rock Classics of Our Time. That album covered nearly 35 years of chart chestnuts from “Love Hurts” to The Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand by You.” Stewart gave Motown and Philly

Soul the same treatment three years later with Soulbook. With Swing Fever he gives some of the most amazing performances of his post-2000 recording career.

That has a lot to do with crossing paths with Holland. Known in the States mainly for co-founding British pop band Squeeze and serving as a guest VJ on MTV, Holland is a living institution for his role as host of long-running late-night BBC music program Later … with Jools Holland. A virtuoso stride pianist, Holland has an infectious enthusiasm for and encyclopedic knowledge of all styles of music.

In March, 50 years after Squeeze formed, he had his first No. 1 album.

Stewart’s last studio e ort to top the U.K. charts was 1976’s A Night on the Town, with 1971’s Every Picture Tells a Story being his first No. 1 on both sides of the Atlantic. The pair received the news after

performing at a Feb. 29 Prince’s Trust dinner, giving them cause for celebration.

Stewart sounds like he’s celebrating throughout Swing Fever. The album opens with “Lullaby of Broadway,” with muted horns and tap dancing complementing the vocalist’s rasp and Holland’s boogie-woogie playing. Stewart really opens up on next track “Oh Marie,” indulging scat-singing that may come as a surprise to most longtime fans and make late Vegas showroom king Louis Prima proud.

Whether Stewart adds Swing Fever material to his Colosseum residency sets remains to be seen, but there are several songs that would work. Proto rock ’n’ roll song “Good Rockin’ Tonight” would fit right in, and he’s performed “Pennies from Heaven” live with Holland. Covers have long been staples of Stewart’s sets, with Muddy Waters’ “Rollin’ and Tumblin’” and Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind” included in concerts during Stewart’s recent summer tour of Europe.

He’s included surprises at Rod Stewart: The Hits before, along with familiar renditions of Sam Cooke’s “Twistin’ the Night Away” and Van Morrison’s “Have I Told You Lately.” Lucky fans of Stewart’s tenure in The Faces may get to be present for “Ooh La La,” but of course no matter which era is a favorite, all audience members there will be dancing during “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy.”

Lite-Brite Retro Nights

outside world quite literally revolve around you for a spell.

Indulge in a bit of yourself, Leo, with the fittingly themed cocktail of the evening, the Sunset Majesty, a bright and punchy concoction of Tres Generaciones tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and cranberry juice. In a room full of radiant, vivacious spirits, you’d be hardpressed to avoid making friends, so why not order a shareable cocktail for you, your squad and all of the new lions you may meet? Try the Champagne Bubble Bath, made with The Botanist gin, Aperol, lime and pineapple juices, Monin straw-

berry liqueur and rose syrup, all topped with champagne and edible rose petals and served in a small, bathtub-shaped vessel complete with floating rubber duckies. It’s the perfect showstopper to share on your LNO (Leos Night Out, obviously).

Reservations are not required but seriously recommended here. It’s one of the most poppin’ places to party at the property, and it would only be appropriate for the royalty of the cosmic jungle to be on the list.

Family-friendly

fun awaits at

multiple experiences on the Vegas Strip

Families promenading properties and steering strollers at all hours was once a sign that things in Las Vegas were evolving. Today it’s convention, with multiple generations of guests from all time zones splitting time between

sightseeing, shows and dining with kids in tow. It’s no longer a question of finding activities for all ages as much as what to choose from.

One of the newest immersive experiences, ARTE MUSEUM, stands mid-Strip

across from The Cosmopolitan’s Chelsea tower entrance. An Infinite Waterfall room that combines projections of vertical rivers falling from a height of 7 meters and the sounds of cascades awaits within the cool confines. Other

rooms contain floral, oceanside and starry sky themes and frolicking luminescent creatures, with features including a tea bar and a Live Sketchbook, where drawings of animals can be customized and turned into animated figures.

Dino Safari: A Walk Thru Adventure has its own share of Instagrammable moments inside Horseshoe Las Vegas, where an assortment of prehistoric reptiles come to life. They find inhabiting Dino Safari to their liking and are not in the habit of breaking free to run wild in the streets. It’s a rare chance to get close to a Tyrannosaurus or triceratops, but they could get close to you first.

Speaking of breaking free, Jabbawockeez have the most kinetic show on the Strip, which enchants children when they aren’t dancing themselves. The world’s preeminent breakdance crew has held multiple residencies over the years, with current MGM Grand extravaganza Timeless

being the ultimate showcase of body-rocking, precision choreography, skits and humor, and audience participation.

For an o -Strip trip, Ethel M Chocolates Factory & Cactus Garden is a fantasy land for sweet-toothed small people and adults who grew up wishing there was a real-life Willy Wonka. Ethel M’s provides golden tickets for everyone and is a go-to place during the holidays when it’s transformed into a winter wonderland. The Cactus Garden, the largest of its kind in Nevada, is accessible year-

round, as are factory tours and chocolate tastings.

Grand Canyon West o ers sights, tours and lodging from the Hualapai Indian Reservation’s side of the epic chasm carved by the Colorado River. The West Rim is the location of iconic glass-floored bridge Skywalk, and GCW is a launching point for river-rafting, ziplining and helicopter tours that enable the execution of a Grand Canyon bucket-list entry. Adventures await.

Omega Mart should be on everyone’s list. The next-level attraction masquerades as a supermarket with eccentric inventory items, but secret entrances lead to a backroom,

multilevel maze of art installations, interactive contraptions and the headquarters of the mysterious Dram Corporation. There is a conspiracy to unravel, and Omega Mart provides the clues.

There’s no mystery behind Tournament of Kings, where audiences gather at Excalibur for dinnertime shows of gallantry and pageantry, and the forces of good fight knights with not-so-good intentions. Swords clash, sparks fly, horses prance and damsels dance as kids of all ages eat with their hands and root for kingdoms with hearty huzzahs. Add this to the bucket list—twice.

Adults and kids can swim with the fishes at Silverton Casino Lodge’s Mermaid School

I don’t know if you were like me when I was a kid and jumped in any pool … I would pretend that I was a mermaid and would squeeze my legs and feet

together imagining it was a tail, and I would cut through the waters just like the mythical creature. Does that sound familiar?

Well, pretend no more! Cut through actual waters (in this case, the 117,000-gallon aquarium at Silverton Casino Lodge), don colorful tail and fins, and live out your mermaid fantasy at the property’s popular Mermaid School. There is no experience required for Mermaid School—just a love for mermaids, fish and water and a little

imagination (and strong swimming skills). Classes are o ered for both adults and kids, and each class is led by an instructor and Silverton mermaid. In the waters during each class is a safety diver, too, certified in water rescue. The class is about 90 minutes long and entails (get it?!) 30 minutes of tail and fin fitting, instruction and photo taking, 30 minutes inside the aquarium and a 30-minute behind-the-scenes tour. “It’s everyone’s dream to be a mermaid, and your dream is coming true!” said Sierra Gomez, mermaid and instructor.

• The first 30 minutes: Getting ready. Choose what tail you want to wear (sizes kids 4 all the way up to an adult 3X). The tail fits like a tight skirt going from the ankles to above the stomach. Next, you fit the fins on your feet, which act like the tip of the mermaid tail and help you move through the waters. Photo taking is next, while you’re still dry and your hair and makeup are perfect! Mermaid School provides a backdrop to pose in front of.

• The second 30 minutes: Getting in the water. You’ll be swimming with more than 2,000 animals inside the

tank containing 100 di erent species. “They’ll come over and get close,” said Kristin Janise, Silverton’s aquatic safety manager, mermaid and creator of Mermaid School. “We definitely have a few fish that have personalities and they’ll come check you out, but there are no issues with harassing people.” Guests will get to dive, swim and play out their mermaid fantasies, but there is a platform for

Silverton Casino Lodge 702.263.7777

sitting inside the water for those that are a little timid and need to take time adjusting to their surroundings. “If the kids are nervous about the fish, I just tell them to wave to them and to say, ‘Bye-bye fishes,’ and they’ll usually swim away,” Gomez said. “But the animals are so used to people that they don’t really bother you.”

• The last 30 minutes: Getting to see behind the scenes. “People just see the main tank and they think that’s it, and we show them the back area and they realize all it takes to keep this place running,” Janise said. Tour the quarantine area, where new residents are observed before joining the aquarium. See where the food is prepped and where the chemistry equipment to test the waters is stored, check out the seamstress area where the mermaid tails are kept looking good, and get a look at the various tanks with live coral reefs and cool inhabitants like hundreds of jelly fish babies.

A helpful tip: Bring your own swimsuit and camera. The Mermaid School provides everything else, including tail, fins, goggles, towels and the magic of making mermaid dreams come true.
