Passing the Torch
We’re in the midst of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, and while many will be paying close attention to events like gymnastics, basketball and track and field, we here at Las Vegas Magazine will be paying extra close attention to an event that was added to this year’s games for the fi rst time: Breaking. It’s been around for decades, and it’s also one of the many dance styles incorporated into one of our favorite Strip shows: Jabbawockeez’s Timeless at MGM Grand.

Much More Than the Cronut
Pastry gets kicked up a notch at this Strip bakery
By now, most pastry lovers know Dominique Ansel as the man who invented one of the genre’s true stand-alone classics, the Cronut. But what most don’t know is that the French pastry chef’s eponymous Caesars Palace bakery has quickly become the go-to destination for breakfast and lunch fans.
The two heavy-hitters are definitely the aforementioned combination of croissant and doughnut and the DKA, which stands for “Dominique’s Kouign Amann,” a croissant filled with flaky layers inside and a carmelized and crispy exterior. But dig a little deeper and you’ll discover an incredible array of sweet and savory bites.
Delight your taste buds with sweet treats like the chocolate-raspberry soufflé, a gluten-free concoction made with Valrhona chocolate, dark chocolate mousse, raspberry gelée and raspberry hibiscus jam, all surrounding a flourless chocolate biscuit; the lemon madelein, an Earl Grey madeleine cake with lemon curd, brown sugar and whipped ganache; and the key lime pie, a visually pleasing blend of key lime curd, coconut dacquoise, toasted graham cracker, whipped ganache, meringue, candied lime and lime zest.
If you’re in the mood for a substantial breakfast or lunch, several items here will more than satisfy: the Perfect Little Egg Sandwich, a mini brioche bun piled with Gruyère, chives, carmelized shallots and fluffy, farm-fresh eggs; the Chef’s Croque Monsieur, homemade sourdough bread heaped with Black Forest ham, melted Gruyère and bechamel sauce; and smoked salmon and crème fraîche, melt-in-your-mouth pieces of sliced smoked salmon served with crème fraîche, capers, red onions, lemon zest and chives.
Another highlight here is the cookies, everything from double chocolate pecan and white chocolate macadamia to macaron and blueberry oatmeal. Some are even gluten-free. And speaking of cookies, there’s a very cool Instagrammable feature in front of the venue: A “Milk & Cookie” robot behind glass that prepares Dominique Ansel’s signature Chocolate Chip Cookie Shot. Watch as it grabs a soft cookie, shaped into a shot glass, and fills it with homemade Madagascan vanilla milk. Grab it from the window, sip the milk, then eat the baked treat. –Ken Miller

Cool It!
As temperatures continue to soar, head to these ideal places to chill out
Although Las Vegas is far from the only place that has experienced massive heat waves this year, it is one of the best places to escape the sun’s wrath. Not only is every resort on the Strip air-conditioned, you’ll find pools and cabanas galore. But there are also multiple destinations with even better ways to cool off.
One of most unique ways to beat the heat is in Minus5 Icebar, which offers three venues in Vegas. Inside each one is a cool bar and a lounge where everything is made of ice, and yes, temperatures are kept there, which means the ice sculptures, glasses and furniture will remain frozen. Each location—Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian, The Linq Promenade and Mandalay Bay—is made of about 100 tons of ice, and each venue is themed differently, so heading to all three is definitely recommended. This summer, all locations are offering specially priced packages. For instance, the “Polar Passport” offers three-day entry to all venues, plus glove and parka use, two cocktails, and a souvenir hat. Other special packages might include show experiences, souvenirs, cocktails and more; restrictions may apply.
Speaking of frozen, Eataly Las Vegas in Park MGM announced a summertime gelato program, and that’s a very sweet heat-buster. Il Gelato is located close to the Strip entrance to Eataly, and serves up small batches of the creamy treat, made with whole milk and imported Italian ingredients. Its new Gelato alla Grande menu features massive presentations like the Coppa Fragola, a sundae supreme with scoops of vaniligia, fior di latte and mascarpone gelatos, strawberries, pistachios, crushed ice cream cone and whipped cream. But there are several other creations that will pique your taste buds.
And if you’d like a little pick-me-up in your ice cream, try one of the alcohol-infused varieties at Aubi & Ramsa in Resorts World Las Vegas, where you’ll find tequila sorbet and Irish cream ice cream. At 0.5% ABV, no one’s getting totally toasted here, but it will definitely take the edge off Vegas’ scorching temperatures. –Nina King

How much do we love Tournament of Kings, the long-running, family-friendly medieval production? Let us count the numbers over its 30-plus years:
• 15 million-plus: Number of Cornish game hens served to guests over the show’s 30-plus-year history (all foods are meant to be eaten with your hands).
• 75,000: Cubic feet of wood shavings used each year inside the venue’s horse stables, ensuring each equine is as comfortable as possible. (All the horses live on-property in 19 stalls.)
• 150: Weight in tons of hay consumed by the show’s horses each year.
• 50: Weight in tons of soil added to the Tournament of Kings arena every year.
• 47: Number of people who are responsible for bringing each and every performance to vivid life (20 crew including audio, pyrotechnic, lighting, wardrobe and stage technicians, and 27 cast members including King Arthur, Merlin, riders, fighters and dancers).
• 20: Battle props used during each performance of the show (13 swords, four short swords, two ball and chains, and one axe).
• Six: Lance tips sheared off during jousting in each performance.
What makes this show so singular among the offerings on the Strip is its audience participation element. Before the show even starts, you’ll be seated in one of the different “country” sections, which automatically gives you a feeling of inclusion. The games themselves involve everything from javelin tossing to racing and swordplay, and, after some coaching by the master of ceremonies, you either bang on your table or raise your hands and shout “Huzzah!” –Ken Miller

The Power of Glove
Two knockout artists square off in super welterweight bout on the Las Vegas Strip
Oscar De La Hoya was as serious as it got when he dominated boxing from 1992 to 2008, winning 11 world titles in six different weight classes. And he’s as serious as it gets now when it comes to promoting some of the most exciting bouts around, including this week’s super welterweight match between Vergil Ortiz Jr., left, and Serhii Bohachuk , who will battle for Bohachuk’s WBC interim world championship title.
The event, presented by De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, promises plenty of fireworks. Ortiz, from Grand Prairie, Texas, has a 100% knockout ratio, with 20 KOs since his professional debut in 2016. Meanwhile, Bohachuk, from Vinnytsia, Ukraine, has 23 KOs in 24 fights, his only loss coming against against Brandon Adams in March of 2021.
“There’s a lot of good fighters coming up,” said De La Hoya in an interview with Las Vegas Magazine earlier this year. “YouTubers are shedding a bright light on the sport as well, like Jake Paul. Fighters like that who can bring attention to the sport and sort of make it bigger. It’s my job as a promoter to continue to build the next generation of fighters. Bartender is living her best life at her best job
After more than a dozen years bartending at nightclubs and restaurants from Las Vegas to Dubai, working at Ayu Dayclub at Resorts World Las Vegas beats them all. “I’m kinda bummed that I didn’t get into (dayclubs) sooner; it’s my absolute favorite job I’ve ever had,” says bartender Brittany Ashton.
This is Ashton’s first season with the dayclub; you can find her bartending mainly at the South Bar. “The energy is my favorite part,” she says. “Plus, the
DJs, the guests—everyone is here to have a really good time. It’s such a party. It’s good energy. The energy is just different from any other dayclub that I’ve been to. The design of the dayclub, everything flows really nicely.”
And bartending while getting to listen to some of the world’s biggest musical artists perform is just one more perk of the job. “It’s amazing, all the music here,” says Ashton. “So far T-Pain and Illenium have been my favorites.”
“We make really good craft cocktails,” Ashton says. “Amazing cocktails with quality sprits and mixers.” A fave is the popular Mamacita, their version of a margarita made with Patrón Cristalino tequila, Chacho jalapeño aguardiente, Fever-Tree margarita mix, pineapple juice, orange juice and Tajín. –KM
When Ashton isn’t at Ayu, you can find the mom of three spending time with her family at the beach, reading, traveling and working toward her master’s degree in speech pathology, with the goal of working as a children’s speech therapist.
“When I moved here to go to college, I was like, ‘I’ll be here for a few years,’ and now I can’t imagine being anywhere else,” Ashton says. “And I love working in this industry—there is not a single part of the job that I don’t enjoy.” –Kiko Miyasato

This year marks the 10th anniversary of The Cromwell, a boutique hotel on the corner of Flamingo Avenue and the Strip. It also marks the 10th anniversary of Giada, the first foray by food star Giada De Laurentiis into Las Vegas’ vibrant dining scene. And lucky for Vegas visitors, the restaurant has announced a slate of new dishes to complement the signature items.
When you enter Giada, it’s up a private escalator to the second floor, where a casual yet elegant California vibe awaits in the Italian restaurant. The dining room is situated to take full advantage of the floor-to-ceiling
windows that curve around the area and overlook the Strip. Try to score a window seat; it’s so very pleasant, and perfect for a special event.
“I think the real highlight over the past 10 years is all the life events that are celebrated at the restaurant. We feel fortunate our guests have chosen to create these memories, from birthdays, anniversaries, engagements to even proposals, with us,” said De Laurentiis to Las Vegas Magazine
“I’ve also hosted my personal family and friends for birthdays, anniversaries, promotions, and the list goes on. Those events have made this place really feel like home.”

Once you reach the entrée stage, the cacio e pepe bucatini comes served in a warm pecorino Toscano cheese wheel, guaranteeing some happy sighs, or the signature lemon spaghetti. The bright flavors of the spaghetti, with shrimp, mascarpone, lemon and basil, is representative of much of Giada’s menu, where lemon is seen throughout.
On the signature tasting menu, you’ll find branzino as an option, served with a summer three-bean salad, olive tapenade and roasted cannellini purée. On the main menu, the 28-ounce bone-in Tuscan ribeye could potentially be shared, depending on how friendly you are with your dinner companion. A sunny-side up egg caps it o .
Ask about the cheesecake and raspberry honey semifreddo if you are in the mood for dessert, but keep yourself open to new sweet treats as well, as they change with the seasons. And De Laurentiis said to keep your eyes open for more upcoming changes as well. “We are definitely looking at ways to revamp and reinvent classics, both with food and in the space itself,” she said.

After a rocket ride to superstardom, Morgan Wallen has fuel to burn
Maybe Morgan Wallen didn’t know all the hard work he put into his career after being a talent program runner-up would pay o as handsomely as it has, but country music’s hottest star has become a household name. Fame’s come with a few drawbacks, like living under a media microscope, but it opens unexpected doors as well as Wallen’s opportunity of a lifetime: becoming the co-owner of Field & Stream magazine.
He and Eric Church are the most famous names attached to the publication’s revival of its print version in June, bringing the
singers of “Man Made a Bar” full circle to the outdoor traditions of their boyhood when dog-eared copies of Field & Stream carpeted the floors of pickup trucks and fi shing boats.
Wallen has come to embody the everyman since releasing his debut single, “The Way I Talk,” in 2016, and it’s a perception that fits him like a glove. He doesn’t much resemble the long-haired pretty boy that did well on The Voice in 2014 until he was booted from the show after singing a Florida Georgia Line song.
Undaunted and wiser from his experience, Wallen kept working with voice coach Serg Sanchez and returned to his home state of Tennessee. The former high school baseball player who studied piano and violin in childhood released an EP, got picked up by

Big Loud Records and reached the top five of Billboard ’s Hot Country Songs chart in 2017 with second single “Up Down.”
That song featured Florida Georgia Line, who he’d go on to open for in 2019. By that time he was already ascending to country’s top tiers of talent. “Whiskey Glasses,” his second single from 2018 album If I Know Me, went to No. 1, but it was sprawling 2021 release Dangerous: The Double Album that secured him a place in the fame fi rmament. It debuted at No. 1 in January 2021 and stayed atop the Billboard 200 for 10 weeks, the only country album in the 64-year history of that ranking to do so.

bringing street dance and breaking to such a high level of prominence that it’s now an Olympic sport. (Check out the breaking competition Aug. 9-10 during the 2024 Paris Olympics, where a new generation of dancers are representing the U.S.) The Jabbawockeez have broken through barriers in more ways than one and have stepped into a realm of their own while staying true to their roots. And check this out: In this issue, Las Vegas Magazine celebrates the icons by “transporting” them to locales far and wide. We also checked in with two founding members of the groundbreaking crew and asked them some burning questions.

“From 2000 to about 2002, we were a group of friends that found each other through a love for hip-hop and dance. Having been from different crews, we all brought something different to the collective. We are a product of dance culture; we mixed the styles we grew up learning and formed some type of hybrid that became unique to us. Our motivations at the time were about showmanship; we were able to hone this skill by creating shows for local dance competitions or state fair events. Original Jabbawockeez member Rynan Paguio serves as the official assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic Breaking Team and is traveling with them to the 2024 Olympics in Paris. He answered a few questions for us.
I was asked by my really good friend, crew mate and mentor Jerry Randolph, also known as Flo Master, to be a part of the coaching staff with Breaking for Gold USA (BfGUSA) in 2022.
There (were) a total of 15 official competitors working on getting their spot to Paris, and it went down to the final four athletes. Victor Montalvo from Kissimmee, Fla. and Jeffery “Jeffro” Louis from Houston (repping for the boys); and Sunny Choi from New York and Logan “Logistx” Edra from San Diego (repping for the girls).
They are scored through a judging system that has been created by the World DanceSport Federation and BfGUSA, which focuses on five categories: technique, vocabulary, execution, musicality and originality.
We actually call these rounds. It’s when a breaker dances up top, does a creative go down to the floor which then can lead into dynamic moves or creative style patterns which we call footwork and ends with a freeze—all without messing up. When a breaker makes up certain moves that are formulated and put together, we call this a “set.” From that point it’s up to them how they want to create their round, which is the artistic part of this dance. And no, they don’t pick their own music—the DJ plays certain tracks during the battle and the breakers have to improvise to the music.
The whole team is super excited to just go out there and rep for our country. Every country around the world is excited. But we hope to do our best and represent as a whole and medal but mostly win gold for the U.S. and the breaking community worldwide.
may not be the most vocal proponent of traditionalist country music, but his warm, expressive baritone is as much a part of country tradition as the legendary recording voices he evokes. He doesn’t exactly sound like George Strait, Randy Travis, Tom T. Hall or Jim Reeves, but he’s part of that artistic bloodline, and his music makes the listener want to stay in that baritone zone.
He doesn’t ordinarily wear a hat, but if he did, he’d tip it to Garth Brooks, Brooks & Dunn, Conway Twitty, Travis Tritt and Keith Whitley, whose songs he’s been covering while on tour this year. His most pleasantly surprising tribute—in concert and on record—is the title cut to latest album Young Love & Saturday Nights. While not one of the 15 songs he wrote or collaborated on for that album, its opening hook and chorus are borrowed from David Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel.”
Bowie gets a songwriting credit on the track, making Young responsible for bringing his music into the country charts with the composition by Ashley Gorley, Jesse Frasure and Josh Thompson. He wasn’t sure about it at first, as he was unaware if the interpolated riff had copywrite clearance (it did), but the song resonated with him and appealed to his affinity for boundary stretching.
Young grew up in Murfreesboro, Tenn. His grandfather performed with Louisiana Hayride, the most popular radio program after The Grand Ole Opry, and he grew up surrounded by country music. He demonstrated singing talent at an early age and his parents encouraged him as he participated in school theater productions. By high school, he
was singing in clubs and promoting an independent debut album.
He tried out for talent competition program Nashville Star while fronting a bar band in Arlington, Texas. He won season four. A contract with RCA records led to the release of his 2008 self-titled debut album and a series of singles that culminated in his first No. 1 with 2009’s “Gettin’ You Home (The Black Dress Song).” He followed that up with another No. 1 in May 2010, the title track of his second album The Man I Want to Be.
It’s been steady sailing for him ever since. Young had increasingly honed his skills in the studio, since 2015’s I’m Comin’ Over, and produced most of the songs on Young Love & Saturday Nights. In addition
to Gorley, Frasure and Thompson, he collaborated with songwriters such as Chris DeStefano, Cale Dodds and Corey Crowder. Nashville-based singer Mitchell Tenpenny helped pen
“Country Boy’s Prayer,” and HARDY lends a hand with “Fire.”
Young, Crowder and Dodds wrote one of Young’s favorite songs on the album, “All Dogs Go to Heaven.”
“Gettin’ Older” might be the most meaningful song to him, though.
