The Last Laugh

I don’t know about any of you, but one thing that keeps me going in these troubled times is a good laugh. It releases endorphins, it relieves stress, and it just plain feels fantastic (even if, at times, I laugh so hard I actually pull something, but that’s more due to my advanced age than anything else).

I’m always on the lookout for a good joke, a funny movie and a great stand-up special on Netfl ix. Laughter transcends politics, religion, the environment, and everything else that divides us.

Hitting the town tonight? Stop by your concierge to pick up a copy of our sister publication, VEGAS2GO.

So, in the spirit of keeping everyone laughing this week, this issue of Las Vegas Magazine focuses on the people who keep the jokes coming. Millions of TV viewers who no doubt remember fondly the days of Everybody Loves Raymond will be happy to know that Brad Garrett, whose fame shot to meteoric heights during its run, not only has an eponymous comedy club at MGM Grand but is also performing there this week, along with some of the country’s other top-fl ight funnymen (“Comics Booked,” p. 34). At another Strip property, Harrah’s Las Vegas, a new series has launched called Stars of Comedy, and while its lineup will rotate throughout the year, one constant will be the hilarious Carlos Mencia, who spoke with Las Vegas Magazine in an exclusive interview to talk about the show and much more (“A Mind for Stand-Up,” p. 36 ). If this comedy combo doesn’t tickle your funny bone, seek immediate medical assistance!

And we’ve only skimmed the surface of the fun to be had this week, from The Killers starting their fi rst-ever Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace (“Glamorous Rock ’n’ Roll,” p. 32) and a collection of great dayclubs (“The Hot List,” p. 38) to great dining at Alexxa’s at Paris Las Vegas (“Day Breaks,” p. 28).

We hope you have fun this week—no joke!

Just Like Home

Strip Italian restaurant serves up made-from-scratch excellence in a vibrant setting with great views

If you love Italian food (and really, who doesn’t?), lunch and dinner options don’t get much better than Brezza, a concept courtesy of chef Nicole Brisson, who infuses her childhood memories into every dish. The result? Madefrom-scratch classics that elevate this particular cuisine far beyond what you thought possible.

The space itself is an impressive architectural achievement, a wideopen room with comfortable booth and table seating, a well-stocked bar, warm lighting contrasting with stonework, and floor-to-ceiling windows opening to a magnificent patio space. If you’re here for lunch, you’ll want to begin with a cocktail like the Spritza, so light and bubbly with Bisol Prosecco, Italicus, grapefruit and Fever-Tree grapefruit, or the Brezzacello, a magnificent use of limoncello that incorporates mintinfused vodka.

Lunch highlights here include the farmhouse tart, a savory blend of sausage, mushrooms, walnuts and fontina cheese, semolina cakes, sweet treats made with lemon, berries and whipped cream, and frittatas, made with candied tomatoes, prosciutto and fior di latte. All the salads here are highly recommended, but we’re partial to the kale option, which combines Medjool dates, Gorgonzola and candied pecans.

Dinner options expand your options considerably, and most of your favorite classics are here, all with that special Brezza zest. The gnocchi are excellent, made with fennel sausage and arugulabasil pesto, and bucatini alla amatriciana has serious pop thanks to Fresno chilis. For a truly decadent detour, order the lobster campanelle, highlighted by tomatoes, chilis and green onions.

When it comes to the meat course, you’ll have a hard time choosing from options like chicken cacciatore, veal Parmesan and braised shortrib. And if you can’t decide, you may want to go the steak route. If that’s the case, we can’t recommend the dry-aged options enough—Brezza’s method controls airflow and humidity to develop its unique steak characteristics, including hints of truffle, oak and Gorgonzola! Choices in this realm include a 30-ounce ribeye, 42-ounce tomahawk, 16-ounce bone-in New York strip and 42-ounce porterhouse (length of aging depends on the cut). There are no wrong choices, so don’t stress it.

For dessert, don’t skip the lemon olio verde tart, lemon curd, olive oil meringue and nepitella, all brandishing a “B” for, well, you know. –Ken Miller

Everything Nice

Go on a flavor adventure at this boutique with hard-to-find liquor and much more

If you’ve come to town to party, we’re certain you’ve encountered some of the city’s incredibly creative and experimental mixology programs, which feature some spirits you’ve never heard of before. Yes, Vegas is the perfect place to try something new, and at Spirits & Spice you can get that same experience, but nicely bottled and hand-labeled—ready to pop open in your hotel room or take home in your suitcase.

The vast array of liquor options here includes everything from tangerine gin and jalapeno liqueur to Amber Waves wheat whiskey. Unique flavors like hot pepper vodka or Southern sweet tea liqueur will satisfy the most adventurous drinkers, while high-quality classics like tequila añejo and American whiskey promise smooth sips.

For those of us who prefer to stay sober, worry not. This shop has more flavors of infused olive oils and balsamic vinegars than you can count on your fingers. Savory tastes like dill lemon extra virgin olive oil perfectly complement sweet vinegars like the caramelized onion balsamic. You’ll also find an assortment of handmade spice mixes like vodka-kissed tomato spice and tequila sunrise zest.

The best part of all of this, you ask? You can sample just about anything the store sells! Simply see one of the exceptional employees and let them know what you’re interested in trying and they’ll hook you up with a small sip and a ton of information. They can tell you where each product is produced, how it’s made and, if you’re extra nice and polite, they may even share their own personal recipes that they’ve invented with Spirits & Spice products.

Travelers with just a carry-on can still make out with TSA-approved bottles and sampler sets that make perfect souvenirs and gifts. Plus, if you come home with something you love, the store’s online marketplace offers the ability to restock until you’re able to make it back in town. Happy shopping! –Em Jurbala

Altered States

These curious friends will have you in awe all night long

There’s a lot of genius that goes into the making of the Blue Man Group show that most people don’t even think about. For starters, there’s the look of the Blue Men themselves—all wear understated custom black jackets, pants and boots, about as muted an ensemble as one could imagine. But it’s brilliant, as it enables the audience to focus only on the faces of the performers.

The feeling of discovery is the ongoing theme here, whether it’s finding out the decibel level possible from eating Cap’n

Crunch, figuring out how to access an iPhone, or discovering how many marshmallows you can fit in your mouth. (Spoiler alert: It’s a lot!)

Starting this year, the show is adding new components to the lineup. The bad news? The iconic Twinkie segment (called “The Feast”), which involves an audience volunteer, “poncho seating” for those closest to the stage and the effects of eating the snack cake on the Blue Men, is saying goodbye. The good news? A new segment is taking its place, this

time for two audience participants. The company is very mum on the changes, so you’ll have to buy a ticket to find out.

But c’mon—it’s the Blue Man Group! You were going anyway, right? Those compelling beats, courtesy of a live band, only serve to propel the audience to its feet, and by the time the lights come on, you will feel altered—just more of the genius of Blue Man Group. –Ken Miller

Can’t Beat These

Stripside mall offers many fun dining options

If you’re looking for choice for your next meal, check out FSLV— Fashion Show Las Vegas, which sports a large variety of cuisine at revered Las Vegas venues and new establishments, from steaks and seafood to pizza, too.

The recently opened Emmitt’s Vegas takes some of the legendary Pro Football Hall of famer Emmitt Smith’s favorite American dishes and presents them in an elegant environment looking out on the Las Vegas Strip. On the ground level of the FSLV Plaza, the venue features quality steaks, caviar service, seafood towers, sushi and more.

The casual Happy Camper, a collaboration between Happy Hospitality and Lettuce Entertain You, is also on the first Plaza level, a dynamic, open-air space with glittery disco balls overhead and pizza on the menu. Dig into inventive pies with such toppings as blackened chicken, roasted corn, prosciutto and artichoke heart (not necessarily on the same pie), quaff some potent cocktails, beer or wine, and have a good time. Plus, the Struggle Bus Brunch on Saturday and Sundays was just introduced for morning people.

Tucked back on the Plaza, look for El Segundo Sol, Lettuce Entertain You’s Mexican hot spot that features a patio with plants draped everywhere and a vibrant interior based on Tulum that just makes you happy. Add a margarita (yes!) to skillet queso, fajitas, corn fritters and plenty of taco platters.

Up on the third level is The Capital Grille, a classy restaurant that’s garnered many local Vegas fans over many years in Las Vegas. Dishes here are delightful as is the lovely dining room, which features two-story windows looking out on the Strip. Among the inviting menu items are French onion soup and lobster mac and cheese, with a sauce created with three cheeses and cream, and pasta that has been sautéed with poached lobster.

And for a hidden secret, head to Jeannie’s, nestled in Nordstrom, where you can indulge in gourmet pizza and several grilled sandwiches known as “toasties.” There’s also a full bar, so indulging in a drinky-poo while taking a break from shopping is definitely doable. –Nina King FSLV—Fashion

Swimming With the Fishes

Have a unique pool day at this downtown hot spot

With it being so hot, you’ve got to have a pool day on your Vegas vacay itinerary. Seriously, how could you endure this heat without it? And if you’re in need of a seriously snazzy place to take a dip, consider diving into The Tank Pool

With a 200,000-gallon aquarium in the dead center of The Tank Pool and Hideout Pool complex, The Tank Pool offers a swimming experience like none other. Swim right beside fascinating Caribbean creatures like nurse sharks, black tip sharks, varied jackfish and

stingrays. If that’s not quite close enough for you, take a ride down the water slide to submerge yourself right into a swarm of sharks as you shoot through the center. (Fun fact: Some of the fishy friends that swirl around in this complex are more than 20 years old and capable of living for many more!)

This spot is kid-friendly (with this much fun, how could it not be?), but if your ideal pool day lacks little ones, sneak away to The Hideaway, a 21+ area with its own pool and bar. You can also

have adults-only fun all over the pool complex during Friday Night Swim where fireworks, DJs and specialty beverages make for a spectacular swim. Better yet, there’s no cover! Book cabanas or daybeds to elevate a day here, and make sure you stop by the H2O Bar for a refreshing Shark Attack, made with Malibu coconut rum, Bacardi rum, blue Curaçao, Sprite and pineapple juice. –Em Jurbala

Sports, Snacks and Sips

Have it all at this stadium-adjacent eatery and parking garage

Whether you’ve got tickets to a sporting event, an upcoming concert or other special event at Allegiant Stadium, there’s now an alternative to parking directly at the venue or taking an Uber—WSKY Stadium , a restaurant and bar about as close as you can get to the stadium without actually being there, and one with ample parking, meaning you can enjoy an Allegiant Stadium event with easy ingress and egress. And best of all, you’ll enjoy a fun dining experience with great beers and cocktails.

Start your experience here by parking in one of the 638 spots available (free on nonevent days). From there, it’s easy access to WSKY Stadium, where you’ll get striking views of the home of the Raiders while enjoying a large range of craft and draft beers, not to mention cocktails like the amazing Frey Fog, a unique sipper featuring locally produced Frey Ranch bourbon, honey syrup and bitters, all finished with a fog of smoke.

Menu highlights include the Italian Grinder, a beast of a sandwich piled high with salami, ham, spicy capicola, smoked provolone and more on perfectly textured French bread, the Are You In Or Are You Out sliders, two double-patty mini burgers with American cheese and all the fixings (plus “secret sauce”), and the Fish and chips, featuring beer battered white fish, fries, coleslaw, onion hush puppies and dill and caper aioli. –Ken Miller

The Party People

Resorts World destination elevates the city’s club scene to a whole new level

A nightclub should at least be experienced once on a Las Vegas vacation— make it Zouk Nightclub at Resorts World Las Vegas. Why? For nearly three years, Zouk, a three-decades-old nightlife juggernaut out of Singapore, has shown this city how to party using the best in tech and talent.

“Since the opening of Zouk, the production was an immediate standout,” says Joe Lopez, vice president of nightlife and hospitality of Zouk Group Americas. “As one of the newest nightclubs in the city, the team really took advantage of all the new capabilities and created a venue that will deliver an immersive show. We have the brilliant Mothership, which is the centerpiece of each show, our ceiling panels, and an incredible state-of-the-art sound system developed in partnership with industry leader L’Acoustic. There’s just so much to every show and our production team is truly incredible.”

Guests can check out the mesmerizing and moving Mothership in the main room. (The nightclub offers two other spaces, a 360-degree bar with a top mixology program and a lounge

with more chill vibes). The Mothership was redesigned and inspired by the original in Zouk’s flagship nightclub in Singapore. The huge LED piece features a state-of-the-art lighting system and literally dances to the music throughout the night, making for those perfect, only-in-Vegas videos. The main area also features two bars, more than 1,000 square feet of dancefloor and tons of

VIP banquettes for those that want to spend some extra dough and rest between top musical performances.

Since its inception, Zouk Nightclub has crushed the roster of talent, signing big-name DJs like Tiësto, Zedd and DJ Snake, and this season is no exception.

“We’re thrilled to have Kaskade, who is incredible and is a pioneer within the industry,” Lopez says. “Illenium is one

of our newest residents that takes advantage of the production and created a show unlike anything else you’ve seen from him. We have phenomenal artists like T-Pain, Odesza, Meduza, James Hype, and the list goes on.”

The talent lineup and dope design offerings flow right outside the doors to the nightclub’s daytime counterpart, Ayu Dayclub. “We have some exciting new things coming for Ayu Dayclub that we are looking forward to sharing soon,” Lopez says. “Additionally, returning to the dayclub this summer is our nighttime pool party, Jungle Cat,

and Kaskade’s Summer Lovin’ party concept.” The pool party is spread across two levels and the vibes and décor are reminiscent of the tropical islands in Southeast Asia.

“Zouk Group is elevating the nightlife scene in Las Vegas, and we continue to push boundaries,” Lopez says. “Our

2024 resident artists and stunning production make for a show you cannot find elsewhere.” Now, you know what nightclub will make that Vegas vacation memorable, right? –Kiko Miyasato

Brian Kurata

It’s all about the past, present and future

Earlier this year Brian Kurata joined a 30year Las Vegas success story—Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House at MGM Grand, as general manager. “It’s very unique and it’s a great honor. I get to meet the guests that have been dining here for nearly 30 years. It’s a great feeling to know that this restaurant has built great relationships with guests—it’s all about them and making them feel special.”

Kurata celebrates 30 years of being in the restaurant industry himself, starting

out as a busboy in his native Hawaii. He moved to Las Vegas in 2006 and joined Lagasse’s Stadium at The Venetian in 2013 as a manager. When the place shuttered, he moved to Emeril’s other restaurant, Delmonico Steakhouse at the same property (which has been opened for 25 years itself!).

He got promoted to his current position in February. “It’s been great to experience a lot of different restaurants in Emeril’s portfolio and become a part

of the successful Emeril ventures,” Kurata says.

Now that Kurata has worked in several management positions, his favorite part of achieving such success is passing it on the next generation, he says. “It’s all about the knowledge that I obtained in this industry and for me to teach what I’ve learned and be a mentor to other team members and staff. That’s what really drives me, to be a mentor to others and help them succeed.” –Kiko Miyasato

Boulevard. It also has a great patio, which overlooks Fountains of Bellagio.

Alexxa’s makes a delicious destination for morning and midday meals

Earlier this year, one of the most popular spots for a daily brunch on the Strip, Alexxa’s, debuted a seasonal brunch, and

lucky for you, it’s available every day. The restaurant sits Stripside, so it couldn’t be easier to get to if you are walking down Las Vegas

Being as you are probably on vacation, I’ve got to recommend you indulge in a shared, large-format cocktail. During the summer, these are the way to go—big, fruity, frothy vessels that will impress you and leave the whole table feeling good. Try the Strawberry Fields, a take on strawberry lemonade with Old Forester whiskey, strawberry purée, agave and lemon juice, or the Magick Dragon, with Midori, Apple Pucker liqueur, blue Curaçao liqueur, lemonade and Starry and Gold Luster Dust (fancy!). Bottomless mimosas and

Chicken and waffles

the Colossal Bloody Mary are other great sips to start with. (I also recommend the coffee, as it goes so well with brunch dishes.)

Sharing isn’t just limited to those big drinks, though. You’ll want to order a few starters, just to get a sampling of everything. The hummus is delicious, and comes with fragrant, puffy balloon bread, with za’taar adding a surprising flavor to each bite. Fruit plates are laden with berries, pineapple, blood oranges and apple, with a delicious, sweet sauce. Spinach dip and calamari go pretty fast as well.

One of the most refreshing salads is Alexxa’s chopped version, with bacon, avocado, Gorgonzola and tomato, but it’s the white French dressing that puts it over the top for me. You can get protein added to any salad if you choose. And the caprese features heirloom tomatoes for great flavor.

For your entrées, ordering separately may be in order. Breakfast faves include the Cinnaroll waffle, a decadent bite with cream cheese icing. It’s so very good. A stack of fluffy signature pancakes is covered in blueberries and Chantilly cream while Brioche French toast, with berries and nuts, could almost be dessert. Huevos rancheros, prime rib French dip and the signature omelet with blue crab are worthy choices (there’s also a terrific veggie option!), but a variety of pizzas might be more your style. Try the prosciutto and fig pie, with balsamic vinegar and fig jam adding a delectable taste. The black tiger shrimp and grits are not to be missed . The creamy, cheesy grits are so delightful with fragrant Cajun spice; it’s the grown-up version of the packets you might store in your pantry. And chicken and waffles makes a crunchy, satisfying bite with bourbon-maple syrup.

Hit up the dessert menu for shareables for all: an Oreo waffle sundae with rocky road brownies; New York-style cheesecake; or a 25-layer chocolate cake that’s chocolate everything—chocolate sponge cake, chocolate ganaché, chocolate-hazelnut cream and chocolate sauce. It’s a good thing it’s served with vanilla ice cream, or maximum chocolate level might be achieved.

The Killers are bringing it all back home for their first Vegas Strip residency

The Killers are an institution in Las Vegas, part of the city’s mythology that will be enhanced with a 10-show residency at The Colosseum. In the U.K. they are practically deified, with every album having topped the charts since 2004 debut Hot Fuss. They filled O2 Arena six times in July, providing an unforgettable moment when they stopped the show to screen the last five minutes of the European Championships semifinal. England won, the audience went wild, and The Killers launched into “Mr. Brightside.”

Where is a band to go after creating that slice of rock history? A special sort of homecoming may be just the grounding The Killers need after that high point, part of a summer schedule that included headlining the opening dates of the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan and Lollapalooza in Chicago. In a time of uncertainty about the future of the music business, two decades after the release of their debut album, The Killers have proven that their music endures and they are still one of the most popular acts in the world.

The Killers: Live in Las Vegas brings the musicians that created Hot Fuss together onstage to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the album by performing it in its entirety. “Mr. Brightside” is where the band mythology really begins, as guitarist Dave Keuning had created the chord progression before aspiring vocalist Brandon

Flowers answered his ad in the Las Vegas Weekly seeking like-minded musical souls.

Powerhouse drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. and multi-instrumentalist Mark Stoermer, whose muscular and melodic basslines provided crucial primary colors to The Killers’ sound palette, completed the lineup. The sound had a foundation in the post-punk and new wave scenes of ’80s London and Manchester, with Keuning proving himself to be one of the most innovative and idiosyncratic rock guitarists since The Police’s Andy Summers and fashionable Flowers evoking The Cure’s Robert Smith, Joy Division’s Ian Curtis and New Order’s Bernard Sumner in the perceptions of the critical establishment.

With a fictional band in New Order’s video for 2001 comeback track “Crystal” inspiring their name, The Killers went on a mission of world domination that began in earnest with a trip to England and the U.K. release of “Mr. Brightside” as a single. DJs and audiences embraced the band that had revived a very British music style and served it up in its birthplace, much like the Rolling Stones did with blues in the ’60s before blazing their own path in the ’70s.

It’s easy to see the parallels between the two bands. The Killers evolved their sound to include elements of heartland rock during the course of seven studio albums, which latest release Rebel Diamonds takes a retrospective look at. It’s a good time for the band to look back, take stock of everything that happened from the stage of The Colosseum with family and friends in attendance, then chart a course for the future that may be a complete break from the past.

Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club provides a foundational venue for funny people

Brad Garrett did not have it easy for the first half of his life. By 1997, the over-6-foot-8-inch comedian decided he wanted to live a life of sobriety and start fresh with a clean slate that would enable him to be the best family man he could be. He then realized he needed a purpose bigger than himself to ensure he’d never fall back into self-medicating. He needed his own comedy club. By 2009, he got one in his beloved Las Vegas, where he opened for Frank Sinatra, among many other classic entertainers, in the ’80s. It was sort of a destination within MGM Grand, with an old-school feel, a bar and clamshell footlights. Garrett had a foundation that guaranteed he could do what he loved, provide work for his peers and nurture generations of comics.

Now Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club has moved to The District at MGM Grand. Its lounge, featuring live music by Ashley Fuller and the Collective on Fridays and Saturdays, is open to passersby. Garrett, best

known for his long-running role as Robert Barone on ABC sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, takes the stage frequently. (Six appearances are scheduled for August, including this Thursday and Friday night.) He’s a bridge between old-school comedy and contemporary social observation stand-up, and has a penchant for crowd work. Front-row audience members can count on being part of the show.

This week’s featured comics include Alonzo Bodden, Rob Little and Randy Kagan. The latter comedian may be familiar to fans of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, as he both appeared on and wrote for the nocturnal CBS series. Kagan opened for Ferguson on tour after coming up through the ranks at The Improv in Los Angeles and being an on-air correspondent for MTV movie program The Big Picture

Little is an extrovert with a gregarious, self-deprecating style and a contagiously optimistic demeanor. Having discovered George Carlin at

age 5, he nonetheless pursued a button-down career trajectory as a computer programmer until, he says, IBM sent out a company-wide email that told employees to follow their dreams if they weren’t happy at their jobs. Little did just that.

He studied improv with venerable sketch-comedy institution Second City and incorporated the knowledge into his act, as well as gigs with Fox Sports’ The Best Damn Sports Show Period and Last Call with Carson Daly. His latest comedy special, 2020’s Political Correctness Has Gone Too Far, can be found at Dry Bar Comedy’s YouTube channel. Bodden’s latest special, Heavy Lightweight, can be viewed on Prime, but listeners of Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me! may be familiar with the voice last heard on the June episode of NPR’s weekly quiz show featuring comedian panelists. He’s also appeared on NPR’s Comedy Congress and online political news show The Young Turks. Bodden doesn’t shy away from politics, although he’s been open about how the increasing absurdity of current events is causing him to have to up his game. Catch him in the act every night this week.

joins the ranks of comedy stars with Vegas residencies

When Stars of Comedy debuted this summer at Harrah’s Las Vegas, it was with some major star power signing on, like Jeremy Piven, Paul Zerdin, Ryan Hamilton—and Carlos Mencia. Known for shows like Mind of Mencia and his podcast, The Journey, Mencia performs most Sundays and Mondays in Vegas, and spoke with Las Vegas Magazine’s Nina King shortly after jumping onto the Harrah’s Las Vegas stage.

something more challenging … (I) thought that it would give me a different jolt of energy, and it has. I’ve done four shows and they’re all about 60% to 80% different.

You know, I expected at some point in my career to do this. I’ve been touring consistently ever since I started doing stand-up in 1988. To be in Vegas and have those people coming to me instead was very, very inviting. Another thing was I felt like I needed something different, something new,

When human beings are laughing, the avenue of information is open as well. And I am able to put ideas forth in my comedy, perspectives maybe, that my audience doesn’t have—point of views that they’d never thought of. I’m able to do that.

When an opportunity presents itself like this one, I’m going to enjoy it to the fullest. I’m going to give myself to it completely. One hundred percent—not 99.9 but 100%. And whenever I venture

starsofcomedy.com

into any endeavors, whatever they may be, I give myself 100% at that moment to that endeavor. So that I know, at the end of it, I did my best, I gave it my all, and it’s also something that really makes me happy.

Oh, hell yes! I love the fact that in Vegas, you can get a good bite anytime. Every day is Friday or Saturday, depending on which one of those you like, it’s a 24-hour city that’s awake all the time. I love that energy. I love that I can wake up at anytime and say, “Hey, let’s go do this.” OK, we can, whatever time that is. To see shows, to go see friends. Access to some of the best food in the world. Yeah, all of that stuff is just, it’s just so much fun.

I’m about to do a new special. I’m trying to figure out if I want to record it actually in the showroom (at Harrah’s Las Vegas). Because it’s convenient, it’s already there, it’s nice, It has a good feel—the stage is big. And all we would have to do is put some cameras up there. So yeah, I’m in talks with that right now. But you know what? You have no idea what to expect, because I have no idea what to expect.

‘Soul of Motown’ performers Sean Stewart Godfrey and Brandon Godfrey make beautiful music

Soul of Motown is one of the most popular musical tribute shows in Las Vegas, and the undeniable onstage chemistry between Sean Stewart Godfrey and Brandon Godfrey is a big part of the show’s success. The two talented singers were married in 2020 after launching the show with their castmates at the Westgate Cabaret in 2019, a rollicking tour through some of the most beloved music in American history that will have you dancing in the aisles. It’s a can’t-miss production, but it hits an emotional peak when these artists duet.

Brandon: When I first came in for the audition and saw her onstage, I just thought, she is beautiful. The whole night, I could care less about the other guys performing. I was in another show at the time and had to drive back to Virginia, and I told my friend that night that there’s this girl in the show, and that’s gonna be my girl. But I had to bide my time.

Sean: It was six months before I had any idea whatsoever. Everybody else seemed to be in on the secret but me!

Brandon: You don’t realize what type of energy you exude. With us, there’s always been a connection that reads well to the audience.

Sean: Because we’re married, we gel perfectly onstage. It works for us, and it’s

funny, because we had chemistry to begin with. Even before we were together, people who knew nothing about us would come up and talk to us, thinking we’re together.

Sean: It gets no better. Motown has the ability to bring you out whatever you’re feeling. It can shift your spirit.

Brandon: There’s a timbre, a sound that Motown brings, a beat that Motown brings, and it just makes you feel something. That’s the feeling Motown was going for back in its time. There was a lot going on, those were tough times. Motown makes you forget about everything that’s going on and says, I’m here for a good time. It exudes love.

Sean: A lot of other shows are doing impersonations or other things to take you back to that era. The thing we love about this show is we can bring our own twist to it, individualize it to give our own perception of that song. It’s a modern Motown concert, a tribute to the artists from our hearts.

Brandon: “Tracks of My Tears” is probably my favorite. It’s a classic and it tells a story ... It’s a pretty song to stand and sing, but when you get the story and the emotion behind the song, you feel like you’ve never heard it that way before.

Sean: There are some (songs by) artists that were not Motown artists. Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” will always be my favorite song, and it was originally done by Dolly Parton, who is from Tennessee, my home state.
