The Best Gets Better

I divide Las Vegas’ entertainment history into two chapters: Everything before AREA15 and everything after. The enormous, all-in-one complex seriously changed the game upon opening in 2021, o ering a mind-blowing array of attractions, art, restaurants, bars and nightlife. It continues to grow, evolve and improve even as I write this editor’s note, but by far the most compelling aspect of AREA15 remains Meow Wolf’s Omega Mart, an otherworldly combination of consumerism, lighting, music, scents and exploration. It’s one of the city’s hottest-ticket items at the moment, and if you haven’t yet experienced it, you are in for a serious treat.

Even if you’ve been before, there’s a reason to return this week: Omega Quest, a scavenger hunt that will require some serious detective skills to solve (“Hunting Party,” p. 32). Trust us: Even if you think you’ve seen all Omega Mart has to o er, this experience will surprise you again and again.

And that’s just the beginning of the fun in store for you this week. Fans of the iconic Paris Las Vegas (with its replica of the Ei el Tower to remind us all of the wonderful, recent Olympics) will want to visit this week, as the property is celebrating its 25th anniversary, complete with cool prix fi xe menus at a bunch of its restaurants (“We’ll Always Have Paris,” p. 34).

Comedy fans will want to get tickets for one of the hottest stand-ups of the moment, Tom Segura, who brings his unique style of humor to Dolby Live at Park MGM (“Hoot and Holler,” p. 14).

Excited about football? Not as much as we are, which is why we’ve dedicated a feature to the best places to watch your favorite team with your favorite buddy or group of friends while enjoying great food and drink (“Gameday Greats,” p. 36 ).

Enjoy your week, and we’re glad you’re here!

Popular comedian brings his ‘Come Together Tour’ to the Strip

We shouldn’t have to tell you who Tom Segura is. If you’ve avoided his numerous hilarious Netflix stand-up specials and chuckle-worthy podcast clips, then clearly you’ve been living under a rock. But worry not. If you identify as deprived of the funnyman’s quips and comebacks, you can get a full dose in person at Dolby Live at Park MGM this week.

Paramount to the comedian’s success is his ability to tell captivating stories that not only have you hanging onto each word he utters and waiting for the next, but also giggling the whole time. And while that mode of comedy comes naturally to Segura, it’s no stroke of luck that he’s so good at it. He’s been practicing since he was a kid.

“Even when I was in high school, I had a teacher who would let me tell stories when I was late. I was always late for this one class after lunch and he’d be like, ‘OK, let’s hear it, why are you late?’ and I’d make stuff up that had kernels of truth in it and he would laugh,” Segura told Las Vegas Magazine in an exclusive interview. “I love when something happens and you go back and tell people what happened. And I think I’ve always tried to make that entertaining.”

You can count on hearing relatable tales about Segura’s family, friends and chance encounters. And if luck is in the air, the comic may go off script for a bit, giving audiences a taste of what he does so well on his various podcasts; being likable and just a touch out of pocket.

Segura’s no stranger to Vegas, either. He’s played clubs, theaters and arenas all over the valley with his solo show and co-headlining with his longtime friend and podcast partner Bert Kreischer. He’s even burst onto the Las Vegas bar scene with he and Kreischer’s vodka brand, Por Osos, becoming available at Best Friend, which is conveniently located in the property. So stop in for a sip before the show. –Em Jurbala

Creative Bites

Try inventive dishes at this fine-dining

mainstay

Rarely will you find a fine-dining restaurant quite so playful as Stanton Social Prime, an elegant, intimate space that’s perfect for gatherings, as sharing is heavily encouraged (hence the restaurant’s title). So many of the menu items are a clever spin on tried-and-true classics; you can tell founder Chris Santos (who for years ran the very successful Stanton Social in Manhattan) had the maximum fun with everything he created.

The cleverness begins with the signature cocktails: Trillionaire is a take on the whiskey sour with Old Forester bourbon, lemon, Grand Marnier and Velvet Falernum; Doors Have Eyes evokes the spirit of a Tom Collins with Roku Japanese gin, lemon, yuzu soda, Thai basil and iced tea ice cubes; and Rancho Gloria will appeal to margarita fans with Casamigos blanco tequila, Del Maguey Vida mezcal, lime, coriander and cilantro-jalapeño air.

Continue the journey with Famous French Onion Soup Dumplings, “al pastor” yellowtail crudo (with grilled pineapple, cilantro, lime and pineapple ponzu), dirty tots (so delicious with lobster crème fraîche and caviar), and black truffle ribeye cheesesteak sliders with fonduta and caramelized onions.

Make your way through hilarious menu headers like “Not Steaks,” “Hot Potatoes” and “Not Potatoes” to find gems like miso-glazed crispy eggplant (highly addictive, we assure you), Thai BBQ wild mushrooms with toasted sesame, and a lobster mac and cheese that uses a full pound and a half of the succulent crustacean.

All the steaks are true highlights here, seasoned with a house dry rub and served with roasted black garlic (and don’t let that go to waste!).

The 64-ounce super tomahawk is prepared tableside with the full, fiery presentation, courtesy of cognac, while the “Pretty in Pink” 10-ounce filet (pictured) earns its title with the accompaniment of pink peppercorn sauce and pink oyster mushrooms.

Desserts are also full of surprises. Order the strawberry blond “milkshake” and discover a perfectly constructed piece of cake featuring strawberry mousse, vanilla sponge cake and Chantilly cream. And the peanut butter and chocolate cake, drizzled with warm chocolate sauce, is enormous; you could try eating it all yourself, but c’mon—be social! –Ken Miller

Summer Vibes

Close out Labor Day with fun shows and specials

Whether it’s in an office, at home or outside, Labor Day, the first Monday of September each year, recognizes the efforts of all the workers. It’s also the unofficial end to summer and those summer trips, so cutting loose a little is definitely in order. Here in Las Vegas, that weekend each year is marked with events, performances and deals.

Some resorts offer a full slate of specials from resort top to bottom, like The

STRAT, where fine-dining destination Top of the World has concocted such items as the Summer Sparkler cocktail, huli-huli chicken and fried green tomatoes. At PT’s Wings & Sports, View Lounge, REMIX Lounge and 108 Drinks, find $6 domestic drafts and red, white and blue jello shot for $5.

This weekend, Stadium Swim, the rooftop pool at Circa Resort & Casino, makes a great place to hang out. Or hit

up Daylight Beach Club at Mandalay Bay for an afternoon punctuated by Plies. At Tao Beach at The Venetian, catch Fisher and Amiri Paul, while Akon stops in at Ayu Dayclub at Resorts World Las Vegas. Steve Aoki gets the nightlife bodies moving at Jewel at Aria, and Ludacris pops up at Zouk Nightclub at Resorts World. New shows and specials land all the way up to Labor Day itself, so keep your eyes open for more! –Nina King

Creature Feature

Family-friendly attraction brings the past to vibrant life

Dinosaurs once roamed the Strip. We’re not referring to Piff the Magic Dragon or the once-abundant loungeus lizardus. It can’t be determined for sure which species were native to Nevada, but paleontologists believe the Tyrannosaurus rex may have stomped around the area where Las Vegas Boulevard South now intersects with Flamingo Road.

Of course, that was hundreds of millions of years ago, long before construction was started on the first casino on the Strip. It wasn’t until Dino Safari: A Walk Thru Adventure opened its doors inside the Horseshoe Las Vegas that T. rex and company would be sighted on the Strip again, albeit in an animatronic fashion.

Dino Safari takes visitors back in time to when the Earth was one big land mass. The supercontinent Pangea would break up and evolve into the continents we recognize today, but dinosaurs would be the first apex inhabitants of Antarctica. It was warmer then, with lush vegetation for the Hadrosaur to sink its 1,400 teeth into. Growing up to 35 feet long, it’s the first big lizard encountered in the journey.

Now, Dino Safari’s exhibits are not real dinosaurs, and they can’t walk away from their stations. Sometimes they can get a little close, though, and should one become too preoccupied with capturing bipeds Herrerasaurus or Leaellynasaura in their simulated natural habitat with cell phone cameras for social media posterity, they might just make you jump back a step when they move. The larger specimens are more awe-inspiring when they stir and turn their heads, with a roar that’s not too loud to terrify toddlers. Their older siblings get to stick their hands in boxes to guess what kind of fossil is inside before opening lid to see if they guessed correctly. A nearby dinosaur serves as a slide—adults not allowed.

Dino Safari will make lasting impressions with its exhibits dedicated to species that made footprints in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and the Americas. T. rex appears again at the climax, so save phone space for the toothiest critters to ever stay in Vegas. –Matt Kelemen

All About the Music

Classic-rock fans will feast on this band’s catalog

To nail down the exact story of The Grass Roots is no easy task; after all, the group, which has been performing since 1965, has enjoyed participation by nearly 60 members over the decades. But regardless of who played what and when and under what name, what matters is the music. And for generations of classic-rock music fans, The Grass Roots’ catalog is earworm goodness defined, nostalgia nectar for a generation raised on AM radio.

The core of the group’s appeal is undeniably a fertile 10-year period from

the ’60s to ’70s, during which time it produced timeless hits like “Where Were You When I Needed You,” “Let’s Live for Today,” “Midnight Confessions,” “Sooner or Later,” “The River is Wide,” “Temptation Eyes,” “Wait a Million Years,” “Things I Should Have Said” and so many more. They also enjoyed a boost in exposure when one of the former members, Creed Bratton, appeared on the megahit NBC comedy The Office

The band’s current lineup of Mark Dawson, Dusty Hanvey, Larry Nelson and Joe Dougherty have been together

for more than 11 years, and in 2015 they were all smiles as The Grass Roots was inducted into the American Pop Music Hall of Fame (a class that also included Barry Manilow, Neil Sedaka and Barbra Streisand).

As long as audiences want to revisit music from classic bands, The Grass Roots will live on—regardless of who’s in the band. –Ken Miller

Refreshing Rituals

Have a rejuvenating day at this luxury spa

While you’re in Las Vegas indulging a bit (maybe a bit too much and paying the price?), consider an indulgence that helps you feel amazing. Qua Baths & Spa at Caesars Palace offers plenty of treatments that are sure to get you ready for your next round of partying.

Signature treatments focus on achieving certain results and giving you a total spa experience. For instance, the Qua Signature Hourglass creates a blend of skincare, massage

and body treatments that is customized for your needs. It’s available in a two- or three-hour version, and both come highly recommended.

A favorite for many Las Vegas guests is the Qua Signature Leg Recovery Ritual. For 100 minutes, you’ll get hot and cold therapies, hot stones and even a caffeinated leg mask, all designed to help reduce swelling and inflammation in the feet and legs. It even includes lower back treatment. If you’ve been hiking all over the Strip

(and you can seriously walk miles every day here), you’re sure to appreciate this treatment.

But that’s only a small part of what’s in store here. In addition to a variety of massages and facials (some designed for couples), you’ll find hot and cold saunas, the Roman baths and the Arctic Room, all which are sure to refresh you. –Nina King

Style and Sips

Strip

lounge makes for an enjoyable evening out

If you’re looking for an evening of drinking and merriment, let us point you in the direction of SAHARA Las Vegas and to its über-cool CASBAR Lounge. This lounge is a true destination for some of the best craft cocktails, a beautifully designed space with tons of room to relax and live music every evening.

Tim Rita, director of beverage, recently released a brand new menu of signature cocktails, and he shared with us some of his favorites, starting with the 9th Island Mojito. This cocktail, an ode to his home state of Hawaii, is served on draft and made with Kuleana Huihui rum. Rita loves the brand for its use of homegrown Hawaiian sugar cane, which gives the classic mojito cocktail a bump up in flavor. It’s then mixed with the standard ingredients—sugar, lime, mint and club soda. “Vegas being the 9th island, it just made sense,” Rita said.

For those that like the classic Pornstar cocktail, Rita created a PG version, The Starlet, and then upped the ante in flavor and ingredients, resulting in one of the lounge’s most delicious cocktails. The base is Weber Ranch vodka, a brand that takes distilled tequila and distills the spirit again, turning it into vodka. “It pulls a lot of character into the vodka,” Rita said. The vodka is

then mixed with Passoa passion fruit liqueur, lime, Madagascar vanilla and served with a glass of KÚ sparkling wine, which you pour into the cocktail.

Rita also took the classic Gold Rush cocktail and twisted the version into

the Cali Gold Rush cocktail. The twist is the addition of Argonaut Saloon

Strength brandy added to Horse Soldier bourbon and, for a lovely kick to the taste buds, a mango honey syrup and lemon.

For some fun with your cocktail, check out the What’s Your Fancy section of the menu. You’ll be able to choose from two cocktails: the Agave Club, a tequila-based delight; or the Casbar Sour with whiskey. Both cocktails are topped with an egg white foam, and the fun part is a machine the bar uses to stamp pictures on the cocktail

Jump at the chance to meet the jumpmaster

If you want to meet Kurt Sanchez you’ll have to travel up 829 feet. Say what?! Sanchez is the jumpmaster for SkyJump Las Vegas, a controlled plummet from the top of The STRAT in which you leap 829 feet to the ground.

He joined the property earlier this year and he loves that he “gets to help curate the moment for people,” he says. “When I see people smiling, it makes me happy. And a lot of people tell me, ‘I’ve been here for a week and you’re the most fun I’ve

had so far. You’re very kind and helpful and funny. You give good energy.’”

But besides being a huge people-person and getting jumpers excited for taking the leap off the tower, one of the most important parts of the job is safety, Sanchez says. “Above anything else is safety. … You need to make sure you’re mentally and physically capable of doing the job because you’re in charge of people’s lives.” Every morning he inspects harnesses and all equipment, wires and

Carversteak rounds out menu with vegan dishes

Back in the day, steakhouses never offered dishes that vegetarians, let alone vegans, could indulge in. A few lonely asparagus spears and a plain salad might be all that could be hoped for. Well, that has changed, and as more diners ask for plant-based options, steakhouses have responded with delicious dishes that rival the beef that might be on the plates of their companions.

And although vegan dishes have been available since day one on the menu of Carversteak in Resorts World Las Vegas, recently the restaurant

announced a new set of dishes that offer something vegan for every course. “We know that our guests crave diversity in Carversteak’s menu, and this adds a whole new dimension to our offerings,” said Daniel Ontiveros, corporate chef of parent company Carver Road Hospitality, in a recent announcement. And all the dishes are perfect for intermixing with meat dishes for variety.

To begin, try the vegan “calamari,” constructed of king trumpet mushrooms and served with sweet peppers and a tomato-based sauce for dipping. Shishito peppers are favorites for diners due to the sweetness and mild heat in most of them. (You could always hit on a hot one, but that’s the chance you take). Chili flakes, lime and tofu aioli finish it off.

Market salad

A different take on gazpacho, Carversteak’s features strawberry and tomato with almonds. If you prefer a salad, the market salad features Salanova lettuce, a variety similar to butterhead and baby lettuce that has earned a reputation for being more flavorful than basic butterhead. Green goddess dressing, heirloom tomatoes and fresh basil add even more flavor.

For entrées, get pasta, a chop or grilled eggplant. “These dishes are not only flavorful and perfect for those with specific tastes, but they’re also fun to create,” said Ontiveros. Carversteak’s vegan chop has been available since opening, a marvelously hearty blend of organic grains and legumes that has a very meaty appearance,

served with heirloom tomato and chimichurri sauce. Although technically you wouldn’t need Carversteak's signature offering of a custom steak knife to use during your meal, take it anyway—the knives are beautiful and a wonder to hold. (If you are a knife fan, Carversteak has a private dining room with an amazing collection of specialty knives on display.)

summer squash. The binchotan grilled eggplant introduces you to a tofu and garlic confit purée—binchotan is that super-hard charcoal that burns very cleanly.

“I love the opportunity to try new things in the kitchen and bring something truly inspired to the dinner table,” said Ontiveros. Semolina pasta features housemade gemelli in pomodoro sauce and

And the side dishes here are also amazing—steak fries, roasted mushrooms, roasted broccolini and sautéed spinach. Desserts here may not necessarily be vegan, but they are mouthwatering. The Baked Nevada captures the essence of baked Alaska, with mixed berry sorbet and coconut lime cake. This wins best in show on looks alone. For a clean finish to the meal, the fruity sorbet trio delivers.

Omega Quest sends shoppers through the Omega Mart universe on a mission of mysteries

3215 S. Rancho Drive. meow.wf/lvm

OMEGA QUEST seems like an innocuous series of tasks on the surface, a scavenger hunt tailored for the multiuniverse realms of Omega Mart inside AREA15: Find and document 10 items or locations with a written solution to a clue or a photo as proof. Several quests, such

as one involving the search for “Sop,” look easy enough for smart shoppers who have been to Omega Mart before. But where are these eyeballs? What is “Rose Beef,” and who is “Shelby”?

The best thing to do once arriving for the 1 p.m. check-in is to take a casual

Photos courtesy of Atlas Media

stroll around Omega Mart and check out the products. There will be a quest object somewhere among shelves lined with Lil Meow Pigeon Mousse cat food and Healthy Wolf Lonely Hiker Protein Feast, Plausible Deniability laundry detergent and bestselling bendable, squeezable

“and totally rad-ish” Daikon plush pals.

Of course, this is Omega Mart, owned and operated by the enigmatic Dram Corporation, so there’s more here than immediately meets the eye. Turn the right corner, climb the right stairs or open the right door and suddenly a surreal world contrasting with the store’s bright lights is available to discover.

The menagerie of scenic design, installations, set pieces and psychedelic playgrounds is divided between the more artistic presentations below and the operations center fantasyland above. Several Omega Quest missions will be in this center, which may be a good place to exchange with an attendant the solitary Omega Quest clue pass that comes with the pen, checklist and mini-clipboard.

Better yet, scope the place out for the first half-hour, and don’t worry about finding anything. Get oriented. Sit down at the desks in the operations center, pink up a phone, play with a computer and regard wall décor. Check out the interactive contraptions and the soundgenerating station. Walk downstairs and find a river of lights in the floor, a hallway of sense-stimulating rooms, themed side nooks and wall projections, and tunnels that provide shortcuts between immaculate installations and also enable games of hideand-seek.

Parties can make up their own games that can last until closing, but there is a

time limit on Omega Quest, so a group effort may be less challenging and a lot more fun. One quest that is not on the checklist is artist Karla Lagunas’ work-in-progress, Meta-Telos III, which is in the sensory-room hallway. Lagunas is on-site Fridays after 4 p.m., continuing her creation of magenta hues, soft lights, moving curtains and text imagery, but it’s always available for immersive investigation.

Omega Mart offers a look at its entire collection

of visual installations and exhibited works via an art tour, but Omega Quest is designed more for the explorers and amateur detectives. Save the clue pass until near the end of the 2:45 p.m. deadline, then find an attendant. They are all remarkably well-briefed on Omega Quest and expertly offer advice without spoiling the surprises. They can help you find “Shelby” or point you in the general direction of the foreman’s desk. The real fun is in the hunt.

Mid-Strip’s resort of romance presents prix fixe menus during its 25th anniversary celebration

For many Vegas visitors, Mon Ami Gabi is the fi rst place that comes to mind when considering breaking overnight fasts with Bloody Marys and eggs Benedict, thanks in large part to a reputation for consistent excellence built during the 25 years since Paris Las Vegas opened to the public. That

The Bedford by Martha Stewart o ers a wine-pairing to go with its prix fi xe menu, which kicks o with Alexis’ Chopped Salad. Big Martha’s Pierogies are accompanied by 19 Crimes’ Martha’s Chardonnay with golden osetra caviar as an option. Lemon risotto with sea scallops and an 8-ounce American wagyu fi let are entrée choices, paired with Beringer Knights Valley Reserve cabernet sauvignon, while cotton candy and raspberry sorbet characterize the Snow in the Desert dessert that comes with Broadbent Madeira Colheita.

The Paris Anniversary prix fi xe menu at Vanderpump à Paris begins with the tru e-stu ed Vanderpump baguette and triple crème Brie, tru es and tru e honey. It’s paired with pearand-ginger mule Pump & Circumstance before the courses commence with La Fleur or goat cheese cakes (with Vanderpump rosé), coq au vin pot pie or a cast-iron fi let (with an apple butter Old-Fashioned), and crème brulée beignets or mousse au chocolate bites paired with a pain au chocolat martini.

Al fresco dining destination Chéri Rooftop opens during anniversary week and o ers a brunch highlighted by an avocado croissant topped with softboiled eggs, smoked salmon on a bagel, Benedicts, Japanese sou é and steak frites. The new venue has a special cocktail program to explore while taking in one of the most spectacular views of the Strip, which Chéri Rooftop will take full advantage of during the next Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix.

It’s finally back! Oh, football, how we missed you! There’s also a killer food menu, with shareable highlights including Bodega Chopped Cheese Stadium Fries, a decadent concoction featuring ground beef, Boursin fondue, provolone, grilled onions, bell peppers, American cheese, giardiniera and chipotle aioli.

Another great option for both viewing and food and drink options is Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Sports Kitchen at Horseshoe Las Vegas, where you can find any game you want on the more than 30 TVS while you and a group

Plus, if you want to check out a Monday or Thursday night game, Cadillac features an enticing happy hour from 4-6 p.m. Monday through Friday, featuring $4 domestic draft beers, $5 Famous Margaritas, $6 wines and more.

While downtown, you can also

Another downtown venue o ers sports viewing on a completely di erent level—three of them, to be exact. Stadium Swim at Circa Resort & Casino features six pools on three tiers, all of which o er great vantage points to watch some games on a 40-foot-tall, high-definition screen. The food and

beverage options are plentiful, all of which can be delivered to you!

Sports are so much more fun when you’re betting on them, and for such activity it doesn’t get much better than the impressive SuperBook at Westgate Las Vegas. This season the venue will o er a special promo for the mobile betting app (bet $100 and get $100 for new mobile app signups), and in addition to the SuperBook, Westgate will o er Football Central, with an additional 1,500 seats in the International Theater. And, as always, you’ll have plenty of gameday food and beverage specials.
