Get Involved!

This long-running, colorful romp maximizes audience participation

There’s a lot of genius that goes into the making of the Blue Man Group show that most people don’t even think about. For starters, there’s the look of the Blue Men themselves—all wear understated custom black jackets, pants and boots, about as muted an ensemble as one could imagine. But it’s brilliant, as it enables the audience to focus only on the faces of the performers (and the various items they experience during a typical show).

That’s only the beginning of the ingenuity at work here. Even before the show starts, a silent radio gets the crowd in a friendly, communal state of mind by flashing messages of congratulations, birthdays, and more. By the end of this segment, you’ll feel like part of one big community, a feeling that only amplifies once the Blue Men emerge, making sounds and music from the most unusual of objects.

The feeling of discovery is the ongoing theme here, whether it’s finding out the decibel level possible from eating Cap’n Crunch, figuring out how to access an iPhone, or how many marshmallows you can fit in your mouth. (Spoiler alert: It’s a lot!)

Speaking of discovery, longtime fans of the show (this writer has been eight times and counting!) are sure to be thrilled to learn that the show has added new components to the lineup. The bad news? The iconic Twinkie segment (called “The Feast”), which involves an audience volunteer, “poncho seating” for those closest to the stage and the effects of eating the snack cake on the Blue Men, is saying goodbye. The good news? A new segment has taken its place, this time for two audience participants.

And those compelling beats, courtesy of a live band, only serve to propel the audience to its feet, and by the time the lights come on, you will truly feel altered—just more of the genius of Blue Man Group. –Ken Miller

A Heady Experience

Bar combines mysteries, riddles and stranger things with amazing signature cocktails

It’s hard to gauge what’s more fun at The Cabinet of Curiosities: The cocktails or exploring the space. For the safest bet, combine both, as this unique destination will test your brain while pleasing your taste buds at the same time.

The decor here is dark and gothic, with a mashup of Victorian and bohemian furnishings. On your right upon entering, you’ll find curio cabinets filled with objects that will have you scratching your head, “What exactly is this thing?” But scan a QR code and you’ll be taken to a site that lets you input each item’s four-digit number. You’ll spend quite a bit of time discovering information (not necessarily factual, mind you) on pieces like the Copper Watering Can. (We won’t spoil it, but it involves something grisly.)

Doing this with a cocktail in your other hand is highly encouraged here. Highlights during happy hour include the Nola, a gin fizz with dry gin, cucumber, mint, lemon juice and sparkling water; the Apple Smash, a whiskey cider made with Canadian whiskey, apple purée, caramel syrup, lemon juice and sparkling water; Oh Elle’s Bells, a Spanish fall sangria made with red wine, brandy, cinnamon, fruit infusions and sparkling water; and Latin Moon, a blueberry mojito made with light rum, blueberry purée, sweetened syrup, lime juice, mint and sparkling water.

Once you’ve explored to your heart’s content, head over to The Lock, the venue’s speakeasy with a door resembling an entrance to a bank vault. The phone rings, you pick it up and give the password. You’re then led to an antechamber where you’ll be faced with a series of riddles and puzzles, all of which you must solve to gain entrance. Cocktails here are significantly different than the Cabinet, and you can also have the bartender mix you a drink based on your personality—likes, tastes, etc. It’s tremendously fun. For a change of pace, definitely check out the Cabinet’s mixology classes, in which you are trained in the art of cocktail-making and get to create your own unique concoction in the process. This week, the theme is “Holiday Delights: Festive Spirits for Every Season” from Nov. 28-Dec. 1. –Ken Miller

Put The Back In Awesome

Skywalk is just one of the ways you can jolt your senses and ignite your spirit at Grand Canyon West. Plan your adventure today.

How Sweet It Is

Tribute to iconic music will get you on your feet

One of the most lively shows in town, Soul of Motown is far more than just a tribute to the music born in Detroit. It’s a get-on-your-feet celebration that just makes you feel good down to your core. It also features some of the best music ever written.

And surprise! It’s not just the music of Motown you’ll hear. While you will definitely hear classics like Smokey Robinson and The Miracles’ “Tracks of My Tears,”

The Temptations’ “My Girl” and Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On,” you’ll also hear Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You,” later a monster hit by Whitney Houston.

Cast member Brandon Godfrey has strong connections to this music: “’Tracks of My Tears’ is probably my favorite,” Brandon told Las Vegas Magazine. “It’s a pretty song to stand and sing, but when you get the story and the emotion behind the song, you feel like

you’ve never heard it that way before.”

Sean Stewart Godfrey, who is married to Brandon and also performs in the show, loves the joy she brings to the audience. “It gets no better (than Motown),” she said. “It has the ability to bring you out (of) whatever you’re feeling. It can shift your spirit.” –Las Vegas Magazine Staff

The Power of Magic

Performer focuses as much on his health as his craft

Is the future of magic in Criss Angel’s hands? And feet? Las Vegas’ master of the mystic arts is a pioneer who infused a hard rock attitude and presentation into a magic show, but his main passion as of late, apart from Criss Angel MINDFREAK and his family, has been mixed martial arts. Angel, who has been training with former UFC fighter Jake Ellenberger and boasts former champion Frank Mir as his coach, obtained his purple belt on his birthday last year. His philosophy: Try to get 1 percent better every day.

It works as a way of life for a magician as well. Angel honed his craft for years with the fervor of an aspiring rock star. He would have been fine being an actual rock star, but magic set him apart from the hordes of bands fighting for success like crabs crawling over each other to escape the bucket.

He conquered television with Mindfreak, then moved his operations from New York to Las Vegas like the Corleone family did in The Godfather. The lure of being a Vegas headliner was an offer he couldn’t refuse, and Angel began his embryonic journey at Luxor in a show pro-

duced in collaboration with Cirque du Soleil.

Criss Angel Believe was the prelude to Criss Angel MINDFREAK, with Angel processing everything he had learned, refining his act into the personification of his magical spirit. The sound and video systems were as technically cutting edge as possible. A repertoire of tricks was cunningly developed to the point of being majestic miracles.

He already throws an MMA move or two into his shows, but don’t be surprised if Angel becomes a mixed martial magician for his next act. The possibilities must be dancing in his head already, but in the meantime Criss Angel fans can settle for his new podcast, Talking Junkies Mir and Ellenberger have already been guests backstage at Criss Angel MINDFREAK, where episodes are recorded and friends such as Flavor Flav, Keith Urban, Sugar Ray Leonard, Mike Tyson, Paul Stanley and Mix Master Mike from The Beastie Boys have been guests. –Matt Kelemen Planet Hollywood. 702.777.2782

Crazy, Sexy, Cool

Downtown variety show hits all the right notes

Amy Saunders clearly loves Las Vegas. Over the years, she’s brought the city no fewer than three amazing variety productions, the latest of which, Miss Behave’s Mavericks, can be seen at downtown’s Plaza. Saunders also loves the notion of old Las Vegas, a time of super-cheap drinks, free parking and an anything-goes spirit of fun.

It’s in that spirit that Saunders presents Mavericks, where she makes it a point to mention during the show that a.) the drinks are super-cheap; b.) parking is

free (and there are no ticket fees); and c.) this truly is a show where anything goes. On any given night, the show you see may be completely different from the previous one, so mercurial is Saunders and her love of spontaneity. (At one performance, the entire Green Valley High School marching band got up on stage and performed with an Elvis impersonator!)

The skills reflected by this incredible cast range from ballet (Bella Schleiker is as noteworthy for her dancing as her hilarious facial expressions) and

burlesque (Julie Atlas Muz might make multiple appearances, and that’s a very good thing) to juggling (Christopher Stoinev is flawless) and a “water dump” (think Flashdance, but substituting in the gorgeous Alexandria Beauregard for Jennifer Beals).

You’ll also see the considerable skills of Saunders herself. No spoilers, but suffice it to say they fit in perfectly with tone of the show. –Ken Miller

Industrious Illusionists

These headliners have been making magic in Las Vegas for more than 30 years

I’ve seen Penn & Teller almost more than any other act in town, and it never, ever, gets old. And there’s a very good reason for that. Just as their resume would suggest, Penn & Teller are never satisfied to rest, even though they easily could at this stage of their careers. When they’re not busy hosting Fool Us on the CW (and getting fooled very little by fellow magicians), The Tall One and The Quiet One are always coming with new ways of presenting material, some of it so old that it’s public domain. A great recent example is the “donut on a string” illusion, here expanded to include an inner tube and a piece of rope (and a very hungry Teller).

There’s another reason to be a frequent patron of the fun at the Penn & Teller Theatre: It’s one of the most relaxing, inviting shows in town. As patrons begin filing in, pianist Mike Jones evokes Vince Guaraldi vibes on the ivories while Penn Jillette accompanies him on a bass. You really feel as if you’ve just entered someone’s living room, and they’re doing their best to make you feel at home. And boy, does it work. At their core, Penn & Teller have always been about one thing: Surprising their audience. How they’ve managed to do it as long as they have may be the biggest surprise of all. –Ken Miller

This wine and spirits lounge is one of the city’s oldest and best-kept secrets

Celebrate wine any day, all day, at the city’s vino hidden gem, The Wine Cellar at Rio Las Vegas. This place is literally hidden underneath the property, operating and impressing wine connoisseurs and newbies since 1997. Take the winding staircase down to a Tuscan-inspired cellar with wrought iron, wine barrels, brick, stone, fine furnishings, cozy nooks and an air of European chic. The lounge stores more than 1,000 bottles of fine wines and spirits, as well as rare and unlimited selections. Peruse wines from around the world as well as more singular selections like after-dinner wines, sparkling wines, ice wines and tawny ports. Fans of tequila, whiskey and bourbon can peruse an impressive high-end list, too.

The least expensive glass of wine will run you about $15 a glass, and the most expensive, $75; bottles start around $50 with rare options costing up to $3,500. But what’s great about The Wine Cellar is its flight options—a program that wine manager Hung Nguyen is very proud of, as he curates all the flights.

“Every guest has a chance to try something here,” Nguyen says. “I

welcome the customer just like they were coming to my house, and if they don’t like the flights that are on the menu, I can put together a special flight for them. I have two rules down here in The Wine Cellar. Rule No. 1: Always have the guest walk in here and have the best time and the best value. And second rule is: Always follow rule No. 1.”

But fans of white or red shouldn’t miss two very delicious flights Nguyen has recently put together on the menu.

(All flights include a 3-ounce pour of three different selections). The first, Nothing But Buttery Chardonnay Flight, features Cakebread Cellars from Napa Valley, Duckhorn Migration from Russian River Valley and the Rombauer Carneros from Napa-Sonoma Valley. The second is for red wine lovers, Kevin’s Cab—Cabernet Sauvignon Flight, with Justin Isosceles from Paso Robles, Orin Swift Papillon from Napa Valley and Caymus from Napa Valley. For a real treat those flights, or any for

Kevin’s Cab—Cabernet Sauvignon Flight, accompanied by a steak from VooDoo Steak

that matter, can be accompanied by The Wine Cellar’s charcuterie or cheese plate or red meat options like lamb chops or porterhouse.

Not only is Nguyen proud of the wine selection, but he raves about the cheese selection, too—so cheeseheads might want to make their way to The Wine Cellar if only for the artisan cheese flights. A favorite is the Washed-Rind

Tips/Insider Knowledge

Meals at The Wine Cellar come from the VooDoo Steak kitchen. For a special experience, opt for the Wine & Dine special on Friday and Saturday nights where you start with a wine flight in The Wine Cellar and head up to VooDoo Steak for a three-course meal, all for $100 per person. Now, that’s a deal.

The Wine Cellar has its retail license, so if you find a wine that you like, you can purchase the bottle and take it home or to your hotel room.

For a special wine-tasting experience, reserve the King’s Table.

Artisan charcuterie board selections come in 2-ounce servings, and you can choose from such goodies as black truffle salami, lavender honey, Sofia salami, roasted almonds, Turkish dried apricots, olives and Mitica fig jam.

Cheese Flight No. 2 with 24-monthaged Parmigiana-Reggiano, 5-yearaged Gouda and 12-year-aged sharp cheddar. (This writer tried the latter,

and has to say it’s the best cheese she’s ever tasted.) The cheese is served with fruit and an 8-year-aged balsamic.

Rest assured though, if the wine world seems intimidating, everyone at The Wine Cellar couldn’t be more welcoming and accommodating, while being some of the most knowledgeable in the field of wine and spirits. Over its tenure, The Wine Cellar has had too many repeat visitors to count, and that’s a testament to the service and overall offerings and experience.

“I make people have fun down here,” Nguyen says. “They don’t have to pay for a ticket to a show to have fun and be entertained—they can come down here to The Wine Cellar. Try something unique and different here than other spots in town.” –Kiko Miyasato

Life is good for this general manager

What do you do after four decades in the food and beverage industry? “You enjoy the lifestyle,” says Richard Douglas, general manager of Edge Steakhouse at Westgate Las Vegas. “I drink the best stuff, eat the best stuff, around great people—life is good!”

Douglas, a native of Vegas, started off as a busboy and worked his way up the ladder at some of the best restaurants in the city. He went from busboy and server to management and eventually added

certified sommelier to his resume. “I’ve been in management for 30 years, wine for two decades—and at Edge (which he joined four years ago), I get to do both,” he says. “It equals me out.”

You can spot Douglas running the restaurant, greeting guests, busing tables, pairing wine with dishes—he’s a manager that believes in working right alongside his staff. One of his fave parts of the job is geeking out on wine (since joining Edge he’s beefed up the offerings

Douglas reflects on his 40-plus years in the industry, “I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. It’s perfect for me.” And all that sureness translates beautifully to the Edge Steakhouse experience, because there is nothing better than being taken care of by people who have found their passion. –Kiko Miyasato

Lavo’s gorgeous new space makes a perfect place to indulge

A Las Vegas hot spot with a stellar location in The Venetian recently made its reappearance after an inspired refresh, leaving a space that emulates an Italian garden feel and a menu that brings back treasured favorites and introduces new dishes as well.

Step into the new Lavo, just a short distance from the Strip (in fact, Lavo has a Strip-front terrace), and you’ll be struck by the lovely atmosphere, decorated in warm tones accented with pops of blue and red. A curving bar makes a perfect place to grab a drink—wait until you see the barstools, looking like oversize wooden candlesticks with cushy seats. The rest of the lounge is equally as impressive, with aged brick accents dividing the area from the restaurant proper, and there’s plenty of additional seating around inviting cocktail tables.

Those impressive cocktails include house specials like the Secret Garden, a mix of The Botanist gin, basil, Liquore Strega (an herbaceous liqueur with saffron lending a yellow color), elderflower tonic and fennel, and the Appley Named, a delicate sip with the flavors of apple, lemon and rosemary

Beef carpaccio

mixed with Absolut Elyx vodka and St-Germain elderflower liqueur.

In addition to the décor, the Lavo menu got a refresh, with a mix of new dishes and Lavo favorites. Appetizers include beef carpaccio with black truffle, a pristine burrata, grilled octopus and salads like the baby beets with Sicilian pistachio vinaigrette— you’ll be tempted to make a meal out of those alone. But you’ll miss out on

excellent pasta and entrées, so be restrained, if only a little.

That restraint is sure to be tested by Lavo’s signature, The Meatball. This is an enormous mound of ground wagyu (from purveyor Imperial Wagyu Beef), Italian sausage and veal, with marinara and whipped ricotta. You’ve simply got to share! The black truffle pizza is another people-pleaser, one of five brick-oven pizzas that will leave you wanting to order another.

For those pasta dishes, try the bucatini carbonara with crispy guanciale and egg yolk, or the truffle ricotta cavatelli, a personal, perennial favorite.

Rigatoni melanzana has a wonderful depth of flavor, with fresh tomatoes lending a brightness of flavor to the meaty tones of the eggplant.

Head over to entrées and you’ll find seafood dishes like scallops puttanesca, sautéed Dover sole and grilled branzino, plus chicken Parm and double-cut lamb chops. The beef options abound—try the 36-ounce Meyer Ranch porterhouse, served with crispy smashed fingerling potatoes, or the succulent 14-ounce New York strip.

If you’re a brunch person, then Lavo is the spot for you. The venue hosts its celebrated Saturday Party Brunch from 1-6 p.m., and it has everything—food, fun and cocktails. And on Sunday, Lavo hosts Endless Brunch from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., where you can get a menu of favorites, plus entrée add-ons (like The Meatball) and bottomless mimosas or Bloody Marys for an extra charge.

There are lots of other dishes to order, including sheep’s milk ricotta pancakes, and chicken and waffles. So no matter when you come in, you’ll find it was the right time.

Superstar Shania Twain rides toward the final round of her latest Vegas rodeo

You can definitely call the current arc in Shania Twain’s career a comeback. The five-time Grammy winner has been on an ascendency since recovering from voice-impacting health problems, beginning with her move to Republic Records and the release of her 2023 album Queen of Me. The “Shaniassance” continued with a triumphant tour and climaxed this summer with her critically acclaimed appearance at England’s Glastonbury Festival.

She received a lot of press for her hosting gig at the People’s Choice Country Awards in October as well. A blonde Twain was lowered to the stage seated within an open heart and then welcomed the audience to the show, resplendent in a white cowgirl fringe outfit she had exchanged for the denim dress bedazzled with blue crystals that she wore on the red carpet, but maintaining the retro hairstyle that made her resemble Nancy Sinatra at a distance.

It was her last major public appearance before beginning the final rounds of her Planet Hollywood residency, Come On Over. It’s not her last rodeo, though, and probably not her last residency. Twain plans to spend time in the recording studio after Come On Over concludes, and looks to be influenced by a surplus of positive energy accumulated during the past two years.

Twain has transcended being a country or a pop performer. Her shows are a celebration of her music, and Twain effortlessly leads her audiences into a collective state of ecstasy. She arrived for Glastonbury’s prestigious Legends slot on the last Sunday afternoon in June trailed by drag queens

bearing hobby horses to open with “That Don’t Impress Me Much.”

She wore a pink ruffled cape likely visible from the back of the field. Pink cowboy hats and leopard-skin patterns were abundant among audience members who helped make Queen of Me No. 1 in the U.K., and participated in flash mob dances to “That Don’t Impress Me Much.” Even the line of security guards protecting the stage got in on the act.

Twain soaks up love and admiration and delivers it right back to her fans. If the endorphins produced by that bond didn’t assist her on the road to recovery from Lyme disease and dysphonia, they surely didn’t hurt. The Shania Twain that appeared at the People’s Choice Country Awards seemed like an altogether new person very much living in the moment.

The next mystery to solve is what her new music will sound like. Twain added the first two singles from Queen of Me—“Waking Up Dreaming” and “Giddy Up!”—to her previous Come On Over setlists. She could keep moving in the contemporary pop direction that characterizes those songs or move in the retro direction her Nancy Sinatra look hinted at.

It’s no mystery why Mattel honored Twain earlier this year with a Barbie 65th birthday tribute doll made in her image. Her likeness was outfitted in a black corset dress and top hat inspired by her iconic look in the video for “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” The Barbie did impress her much.

Holiday meals abound on the Las Vegas Strip

Few holidays bring families together quite like Thanksgiving does. And while many of those get-togethers are in homes across the country, some will be happening all up and down the Las Vegas Strip, as most of the city’s premier dining destinations offer special holiday menus on Nov. 28. (For all the following, reservations are strongly encouraged.)

For a fun twist on the traditional Thanksgiving meal, check out Carversteak at Resorts World Las Vegas, which offers three courses: butternut squash or roasted duck gnocchi with black truffle; a Diestel Farms organic turkey breast and dark meat, served with traditional gravy, potato purée, garlic sausage stuffing and cranberry sauce; and warm pecan tart or traditional pumpkin pie.

At Yardbird Southern Table & Bar at The Venetian, you can enjoy two distinct holiday meals. There’s an herb-roasted turkey with mashed potatoes, biscuit stuffing, spiced honey-glazed Brussels sprouts, bourbon brown butter-glazed yams and brown butter bourbon pumpkin pie, or you go with a meal of fried chicken (24 pieces!), featuring Yardbird’s famous 27-hour brined chicken, mac and cheese, and biscuits, with the same pumpkin pie for dessert.

Downtown at Oscar’s Steakhouse at Plaza, a traditional feast awaits you

and your family, which includes butternut squash soup with sherry cream, turkey with the chef’s selection of the traditional fixings, and your choice of maple pumpkin pie or chocolate pecan pie for dessert.

For something completely different, Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer at The

Venetian serves up a chicken-fried turkey sandwich! This beast is topped with country gravy, watercress, shaved red onions and cilantro, and is served with loaded mashed potato tater tots. And desserts don’t get much more decadent than Black Tap’s Pecan Pie CrazyShake, which includes a vanilla-frosted rim with

Texas glazed pecans topped with a slice of pecan pie, whipped cream, caramel drizzle and, of course, a cherry on top.

Over at Circa Resort & Casino downtown, Barry’s Downtown Prime serves a traditional Thanksgiving feast, including white and dark turkey meat with mashed potatoes, traditional stuffing,

baby carrots, creamed corn, cranberry sauce and turkey gravy, along with your choice of desserts like F-ing Chocolate Cake, banana cream pie or pumpkin cheesecake ($22 apiece).

Back on the Strip, Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris Las Vegas offers a three-course menu of pumpkin soup with duck confit, turkey with chestnut dressing and Old-Fashioned-style pecan pie.

For an elegant, seafood-forward Thanksgiving, Michael Mina at Bellagio has an amazing lineup of selections like ahi tuna tartare, butternut squash soup and Michael’s lobster pot pie.

Martin Lawrence lets his comedy do the talking for the Y’all Know What It Is! Tour

Comedy is an art form for a talent on Martin Lawrence’s level. In his case, art blended into comedy seamlessly, thanks to a teacher who gave her rambunctious pupil fi ve minutes at the end of class to perform stand-up before other students in exchange for chilling out for the rest of class. Nowadays the actor-comedian, who broke out as the boisterous title character of his own eponymous sitcom, maintains a low-key lifestyle, saving his energy for the right scripts and stand-up tours, where he takes rising stars on the road. Lawrence chose Ms. Pat and Desi Banks as special guests for the Vegas stop on his Y’all Know What It Is! Tour , which should put to rest rumors about his health that rose during promotional appearances for Bad Boys: Ride or Die . The tour launched in June , opened by Benji Brown in Chandler, Ariz., and ends with an April show in Little Rock, Ark., with Deon Cole on the bill. Lawrence seems to have done few interviews for Y’all Know What It Is! and prefers to let the comedy do the talking. By the time the tour wraps, his slate will be clear for preproduction on the sequel to 1999’s Blue Streak , a No. 1 box o ce smash co-starring Luke Wilson and Dave Chappelle.

Chappelle would inherit Lawrence’s crown as the king of television comedy a few years later as Lawrence starred in 2000’s Big Momma’s House and 2001’s Black Knight . He’d star in many other comedies, but it was his sequels to Big Momma’s House and Bad Boys that sold the most tickets in theaters. Bad Boys: Ride or Die , the fourth installment of the franchise, has grossed $400 million since opening the second weekend in June. There was clearly an appetite for Lawrence’s chemistry with Will Smith and a nostalgia for Martin that led Netfl ix to begin streaming the sitcom in March. This was Lawrence at his most boisterous, with a portfolio of memorable characters that made episodes the topic of water-cooler conversations throughout the mid-’90s. Lawrence had made his comedy bones by that time, navigating his way from comedy sets in Washington, D.C. to A-list stages in New York and L.A. before landing a series of increasingly high-profi le television and fi lm roles. By 1992, he was introducing new talent at HBO’s Def Comedy Jam and, two years later, had the biggest hit stand-up theatrical release since Eddie Murphy’s Raw with You So Crazy . It’s understandable that Lawrence’s catchphrase of “Crazy … deranged!” from the set fi lmed at New York’s Majestic Theatre could tint the lenses he was viewed with through the rest of the decade. He experienced the excesses of fame, made mistakes and owned up to them.

Nowadays he’s associated with a simpler pre-Internet time when it was OK to push boundaries for comedy’s sake. Lawrence doesn’t seek to go viral. He’s an infl uence, not an infl uencer, and he’s always been good for a laugh.

It’s like a mini theater. Through the dance, they have a towel that dispenses the aromatherapy and the heat throughout the room.” Awana Spa & Wellness is the fi rst to bring this European tradition to the U.S. “It’s unique in that people know the benefits of a sauna but sometimes you’re just counting down the minutes, but if you’re being entertained by this amazing show with aromatherapy and beautiful dance and lights and sound then 20 minutes goes by like that.”
