A Legacy to Cherish
One of the biggest pop culture phenomenons I’ve ever witnessed during my lifetime was the transition of Michael Jackson from a member of The Jackson 5 to a solo career. From the release of O the Wall in 1979 and Thriller in 1982 to that immortal moonwalk he unleashed during the Motown 25th anniversary broadcast in 1983, the impact Jackson had on music, and on the world at large, was palpable. It doesn’t really feel like an exaggeration to say there was Life Before Michael and Life After Michael when it comes to entertainment.
This week’s edition of Las Vegas Magazine is dedicated to the entertainment Jackson helped foster. It feels especially appropriate to dedicate this issue to his legacy given that one of the main attractions this week is his sister Janet, who had a massive solo career of her own and carries on the family’s legacy with worldwide tours and her own Las Vegas residency, which resumes this week at Resorts World Las Vegas (“It’s All For You,” p. 32).

Jackson is only the beginning of the exciting live entertainment to be enjoyed this week. Blake Shelton performs live on the Strip in a series of shows at Caesars Palace (“Honky-Tonk Hero,” p. 40), while Mariah Carey returns to her mega-popular residency at Park MGM (“Emancipated Chanteuse,” p. 46 ). Over at Westgate Las Vegas, long-touring band Cheap Trick will pull from its vast catalog to get audiences dancing (“Surrender Yourself,” p. 21), while American band Grand Funk Railroad makes a whistle stop at Golden Nugget (“Still in Loco-Motion,” p. 16 ). And pop country fans will want to get their tickets to Shania Twain’s continuing residency at Planet Hollywood (“She’ll Impress You Much,” p. 18).
Life After Michael is very sweet indeed!

Walk Among the Wild
Over its decades-long history at Mandalay Bay, Shark Reef Aquarium has been host to some of the most fascinating and unique animals across the globe (both above and beneath the water), and its most recent addition—the first since 2008—is a dream come true for lovers of sharks, as well as a highly educational segment that helps to dispel some popular myths.
The re-creation of a kelp forest includes a variety of cold-water sharks (horn, leopard, swell and pyjama), and the aquarium also re-creates the dappled light that helps to camouflage the sharks in their natural environment. It’s here you’ll learn tidbits like:
Sharks do not need to constantly move to survive. In fact, species like the pyjama are nocturnal, meaning they will likely be sleeping at the bottom of the enclosure during most of the day;
Despite what you see in movies like Jaws, sharks actually eat very little: In fact, most sharks eat about 1% to 2% of their body weight in a seven- to 10-day period (humans, conversely, eat that much in a day).
Other highlights at this perennial favorite include a Komodo dragon, Johnston’s crocodiles, piranhas, skinks, jellyfish, a Burmese python and a wide variety of fish (everything from French angelfish to queen triggerfish and parrotfish), some of which share aquarium space with the sand and zebra sharks. There’s also a touch tank (the only part of the exhibit where you can actually reach out and discover what some of these creatures feel like). –Ken Miller

Bedazzled Beauty
The queen of modern burlesque bring showgirls, showboys and vintage glam to her Strip residency
Burlesque icon Dita Von Teese recently resumed her dazzling residency at Voltaire inside The Venetian. The star chatted with Las Vegas Magazine ’s Em Jurbala about the show.
Voltaire, what a perfect room for you!
It feels really nice. It’s so glamorous.
How do you use a space that has so much of its own personality to influence the show?
It’s definitely a big shift for me. Even though the runway was invented for burlesque in America in the 1930s, it still is (different from) most of the theaters that I do—these big historic theaters that hold like 3,000 people … It was a lot of me trying to figure out how to make it feel immersive and adapt the show to utilize the runway and the whole room … I’m not used to having theater in the round or being that close to people. There’s a lot of beads that go rolling off into the audience, which people can feel free to capture, but it’s definitely a different feeling, and I’m really getting into it.
I know you to be incredibly detail-oriented; does that increase tenfold knowing you’re being viewed from all angles?
Actually, not at all, because I’m that way no matter what. I’ve never ever in my entire career thought, “Oh, no one’s going to see that from back in the balcony.” I always think about the details because it’s not even whether someone sees it, it’s what does it for me … I love the details. I love diving deep and really digging into the history of whatever I’m doing.
It’s great to see the vintage headpieces you used in your recent run at Horseshoe Las Vegas are back. What’s new, and what’s sticking around?
A lot of people who’ve seen the show feel like it’s an entirely new show because it’s such a different backdrop. Of course there’s going to be some of my best-known numbers like my martini glasses. And, yes, thanks to Caesars Entertainment, we were able to bring over a curated selection of the Bob Mackie costumes from Jubilee!, which really means a lot to me because those costumes are really untouched since Jubilee! closed … There’s a lot of new things. I’ve added a lot of things and done some edits … There’s a big fetish number and I’ve completely changed that. It used to be an ensemble cast without me and now it’s one of my own numbers with an epic new set piece.
There were two burlesque stars in your previous show’s cast. Are they in the current show? Are there more burlesque performers in this cast?
There’s three! Besides Dirty Martini, who is a global icon of burlesque and world champion tassel twirler, and Jett Adore, who’s been part of my tours for as long as I can remember, we’ve added Tosca Rivola, who is an amazing performer. She does the Cyr wheel. She’s very involved in the burlesque scene now, but I found her at this open casting and she did this incredible act and I was like, “Can you do it and add some strip tease?” So I’m pretty sure she’s the only woman to be performing strip tease while also revolving in a Cyr wheel.
Since you feature artists who have their own styles of burlesque, does the process of designing each show become collaborative, or do you know what you want and ask them to execute?
It’s a little bit of both. For instance, Dirty Martini. Her number is a little bit different from what she did at (Horseshoe). She’s performing with one of my jeweled carousel horses, which is one of my oldest props from a long time ago. It’s really a spin—no pun intended—on the tassel twirling. It’s a collaboration … I think all of us burlesque performers have the formula of what our best number is, and so she adapted that to this set and this prop that I’m known for creating. Still in Loco-Motion
Rock to one of music’s longest-enduring American bands
When Mark Farner, Don Brewer and Mel Schacher first formed their band in Flint, Mich., in 1969, they could not possibly have foreseen the massive success they would have as Grand Funk Railroad for the next seven years, releasing six platinum and seven gold albums in that time span and filling arenas worldwide. But even if they could, they definitely couldn’t predict the lasting impact their music would have over the decades and generations.
Despite turmoil that led to the band
breaking up twice, Grand Funk Railroad has proven to have major staying power, retaining original members Brewer and Schacher (joined in the current iteration by Max Carl, Tim Cashion and Mark Chatfield) while continuing to tour to satisfied audiences who can’t get enough of hard rock classics like “We’re An American Band,” “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home),” “Walk Like a Man” and their inimitable covers of songs like “The Loco-Motion” and “Inside Looking Out.” It’s brand of American-made music
strikes a particular chord with millions of fans, and while it never really got the critical accolades it so clearly deserved over the years, in 2005, the band was voted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame.
As the group will prove to this week’s audience in downtown Las Vegas, good songs never really get old. –Ken Miller

She’ll Impress You Much
Hear all this country superstar’s greatest hits in her Las Vegas Strip residency
The impetus of Shania Twain’s latest Las Vegas residency is a life force she’s been feeling, which is not all that different than the energy that drove the landmark album it’s named after. Twain released Come On Over, her third collaboration with producer and then-husband Mutt Lange, in November 1997. It was a deliberate departure from her first two albums, which were aimed at country music audiences even if they drew on pop songwriting sensibilities and rock production methods.
This time, Twain drew on the spectrum of styles she absorbed while growing up as a performer, taking a chance she could expand her fandom without alienating core listeners, or further alienating the country music industry at large after her second studio album, The Woman in Me, enjoyed crossover success. Twain favored Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette and George Jones as a performing preteen, and decided her music was going to be a hybrid of all her influences—R&B, rock, folk and country.
That hybrid came to full fruition with Come On Over. Hit singles including “You’re Still the One,” “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” and the title track contributed to it becoming the biggest-selling album by a female solo artist of all time, according to Guinness World Records.
At 59, Twain has seen Taylor Swift follow in her footsteps and take crossing over from country to places previously uncharted. She released her latest album, Queen of Me, a harbinger of the selfcelebration to come, in 2023. Twain feels free to walk around the house naked if she wants, to dye her hair pink or wear a blonde wig, or to show off the results of a diet and exercise regime for a Haute Living photo shoot. Her previous Vegas residencies were hardly no-frills affairs when it came to set design and wardrobe, but this time she wants to contemporize her show in terms of tech and taste. She wants fashionforward designs that will dazzle even in comparison to the elaborate couture she donned for her previous residency, Let’s Go!
Whatever is driving her, Twain is filled with the spirit that inspired her ascension to stardom and the resilience that kept her there. –Matt Kelemen

This delightful hot spot serves amazing Italian cuisine
On the north end of the Strip, you’ll find Balla Italian Soul, a sweet joint with a patio that looks out to Las Vegas Boulevard and a menu that captures some of the most celebrated flavors and ingredients of Italy’s Amalfi Coast.
The beverage menu is a beaut here, 26 pages of cocktails, beer and a great variety of wine from all over Italy, with sommelier recommendations, large-format wines and wines from other domestic and global sources.
Italian meals are traditionally served in multiple courses, so you’ll want to choose both pasta and a main. Balla Italian Soul serves several options for your pasta course. Plus, inventive choices of pasta will give you a great experience. For instance, you can get cannelloni Alfredo, featuring rotisserie chicken, or trottole presented with shrimp fra diavolo, ’nduja sausage, roasted peppers and mint.
Once you travel on to the mains portion of the menu, seafood dishes range from light grilled prawns with white bean ragu to sea bream, a white fish with a more meaty taste than other white fish. Steak lovers can choose between a 16-ounce New York strip or a 20-ounce ribeye. Stuffed mushrooms with cheese and marsala are sure to make a nice accompaniment.
And desserts span Italian classics as well, with panna cotta, gelato and tiramisu making good choices. However, if you prefer to drink your dessert, Balla Italian Soul has a carajillo with Licor 43 and espresso, plus amaros, limoncellos and grappa. –Nina King

Surrender Yourself
Long-touring classic rock band brings the hits to Vegas
Ask any classic rock fan to list their favorite live albums, and more often than not the answer is likely to include Cheap Trick ’s Live at Budokan, an album that was playing on every turntable at parties in 1979 and beyond. (It made No. 13 on Rolling Stone ’s list of the top 50 live albums of all time.) That Cheap Trick is remembered so fondly for a live album is entirely appropriate, for the band, which still includes original members Rick Nielsen, Robin Zander and Tom
Petersson, has performed live more than 5,000 times since its formation in 1973!
The band’s unmistakable sound is a mix of power pop and rock, and its hooks are some of the most memorable of the era, particularly in classics like “Surrender,” “I Want You to Want Me” and “Dream Police.” And Cheap Trick, which was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, is also capable of switching things up in concert and having a lot of fun
performing classic albums like Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (which they did at a series of Las Vegas shows more than a decade ago at Paris Las Vegas).
In other words, you really have no idea what to expect from a Cheap Trick show. But that’s exactly why you need to go. –Ken Miller

Head sommelier pours his heart into the job
Growing up Joshua Dunson liked three things: watching his mom cook in the kitchen, eating, and watching The Food Network. So after high school, he headed to the New York Culinary Institute of America in New York with plans to be a chef … then he took a course in wine studies out in Napa, Calif. “And that was the seed right there,” Dunson says. He switched from chef studies to wine studies and today, nearly a decade later, he’s the head sommelier at Ocean Prime Las Vegas at 63 CityCenter.
He’s been with Cameron Mitchell Restaurants, owners of Ocean Prime and its multiple locations across the country, for most of that decade, starting out bartending and serving in one of the Ohio outposts before moving to the corporate side to oversee the wine programs. When Dunson came out to Vegas to help launch the location in 2023, he realized he wanted to get back to the restaurant floor, engaging guests in all things wine.
“I love people and connecting,” Dunson says. “You get to see people’s true

Michael Mina’s Bourbon Steak looks to create a community feeling
By Nina King
Wouldn’t you like to get away? Maybe go somewhere everybody seems to know your name? Well, one of the newest restaurants in Las Vegas, Michael Mina’s Bourbon Steak at Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas aims to give you that feeling, and a whole lot more.
Like Bourbon Steaks in other cities, Vegas was designed to engender a certain feel in everything from design to menu and tableside dishes. “We like to make it really have a sense of place and, Las Vegas is now home for me, and has been for a while. And so I said, you know, I definitely wanted to do a Bourbon Steak,” said Mina.
The community feel in the former Charlie Palmer Steak space starts from the moment you pull up to the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas valet—Palmer was Mina’s mentor. “What I always loved about this space was it was the ultimate locals hangout, because everything is about ease of entrance … you’re not walking to a casino, you’re
8-ounce center-cut filet mignon
by
Force pulling up to an amazing valet team that makes you feel right at home, and you walk right into the restaurant, and I was like, ‘This is perfect,’” said Mina.
For Vegas, Bourbon Steak captures a sleek feel that harks back to classic steakhouse style, with arched entrances, plush velvet and leather couches in the intimate lounge accented by modern art and a bright flower mural at the end of an intimate bar. You can grab a classic drink here while waiting for your table, like a Negroni or a Manhattan. Of course, a twist on a staple is appreciated, too, like the pistachio espresso martini, created with Patrón reposado, Patrón XO Cafe coffee liqueur, espresso, molé bitters and pistachio.
Once at your table, dive into the menu, where you’ll find not only dishes that remind you of your classic local steakhouse, like the shellfish platter, but also lots with modern, innovative touches, like the signature salt-baked & hay-smoked dry-aged tomahawk, a Las Vegas exclusive. The tomahawk is marked on the grill, encased in a salt crust, and anointed with bourbon tableside, where the crust is flamed. Each aspect creates a layer of flavor that stays with the beef, says Mina. The unusual hay smoke flavor was inspired by the cowboys of Washington state, where Mina grew up.
Although the menu seems much like other steakhouses, you’ll find that innovation in product all over, from the tableside caviar presentation of a “Twinkee” with yuzu crème fraîche to the spinach souffle, an alternative to classic creamed spinach. Even the whipped potatoes are given extra oomph through the inclusion of Echiré butter. Go ahead and choose an accompaniment to you 8-ounce filet mignon, like black truffle butter. Other dishes to look for include the lobster
pot pie, prepared tableside, and black truffle agnolotti with burrata filling. You’ll find a lot of tableside preparations to choose from here. “We eat with our eyes, we eat with our smell, and then we eat with our palate. So tableside gives you a little bit of all of that,” says Mina.
Cap off dinner with a dessert like Michael Mina’s banana tarte tatin with preserved citrus caramel and macadamia nut ice cream. You know, we’re sure they’re glad you came.

Janet
Jackson
stuns with her new residency at Resorts World
By Em Jurbala
There’s so much to love about Janet Jackson, from her airy vocals and smooth dance moves to her discography full of hits. So it’s no wonder the chanteuse has a devoted following, and lucky for fans she’s treating Vegas to a fantastic residency.
The set of shows that began just before the new year marks a return to the stage following her 2023 Together Again Tour, which was her fi rst postpandemic venture. (It’s also Jackson’s fi rst time back in Las Vegas since her previous Metamorphosis residency, which took over Dolby Live at Park MGM in 2019.) The tour skipped over Vegas, but Jackson is surely making it up to Sin City crowds with her current run. The pop icon could stun with nothing more than a single spotlight and a microphone, but with the elaborate production capabilities of the Resorts World Theatre, she shines, and her music truly comes to life.
This isn’t just another concert—it’s an all-out spectacle. Talented dancers don fashionable garb while their crisp movements accent Jackson’s slightly softer yet still sharp dance moves.
An array of set pieces and lighting equipment make for a dynamic backdrop, morphing seamlessly between maximalist, high-energy numbers and beautifully designed moments of simplicity. Plus, the singer
created medleys of many of her most popular tunes, so you get to hear more than 40 of her hits. That’s right, 40! Expect to hear favorites like “Rock With U,” “Escapade” and “Miss You Much.” And of course, it simply
wouldn’t be a Janet Jackson concert without “What Have You Done for Me Lately” (spoken word intro included, of course) and “Rhythm Nation.” Audiences will be much delighted by some exceptionally special treats

like a version of “Velvet Rope” that Jackson hasn’t performed live since 1999 and “I Want You” in concert for the fi rst time.
The show includes short interludes that allow Jackson time for costume changes, and each time the star reappears, it’s as if she’s stepping onto the stage for the fi rst time. Each outfit is as glamorous and modern as the last, with chunky boots and formal wear being continuous themes. And each section of the show brings something unexpected. One moment Jackson sings atop a narrow pillar that elevates her above an array of blue laser-like light beams, the next she vocalizes bathed in a warm glow that slowly becomes obstructed by a
floating sphere that later transforms into a giant disco ball. Oh, and you can bet the diva’s wind machines are working overtime, blowing her beautiful honey-blonde locks back in just the right ways.
If you happen to score tickets to her Feb. 8 show (and assuming Jackson’s impressively lengthy performance doesn’t wear you out on its own), cross the casino floor to fi nd Gatsby’s Cocktail Lounge for a special concert after-party featuring famed Janet Jackson impersonator and drag performer Coco Montrese from RuPaul’s Drag Race. Themed cocktails like the Escapade (made with peach Ciroc, Grand Marnier, lavender lemon syrup, pomegranate, blueberry and champagne) are buy-one-get-one for all concertgoers.

stores that deserve a little extra attention—whether you just browse or decide to buy, they’re worth the visit just for the experience.
Make your first stop at Animazing Gallery, where pop art and classic art collide in a cool retail space that has such interesting pieces it’s like walking through a museum filled with iconic cultural references. Animazing Gallery first found fame in Soho, New York, more than four decades ago. Over that time, owner Nick Leone has amassed a massive collection of art, including the paintings of John Douglas (pictured). Douglas, the drummer for Aerosmith, travels with a blank canvas and acrylic paint. When touring, he’ll use his hotel room as his studio, mixing the paints inside a drum head. He’ll then tack the canvas up, paint and, when finished, lets them drip dry in the bathroom shower.
Jump from one gallery to the next. One can spend serious hours browsing through Regis Galerie. This store is more gallery and showroom than retail, but everything is for sale. “These are not mass-produced pieces, everything is high quality,” says director Lorne “LG” Gostfrand. “What we really base our gallery on is high-quality pieces that you can only find here in Vegas. We display 1,000 different artists from around the world and we’ve been in this spot at Grand Canal Shoppes for 25 years. We’re definitely a destination spot.”
It’s such a destination that celebrities galore have paid a visit—just check out the wall with tons of pictures of famous faces that have made an appearance. Besides museum-quality pieces for the home with everything from bronze statues, furniture and pop art paintings to Disney-in-

From sweet to sparkly, it’s always a good time to gift jewelry. You’ll be amazed at the phenomenal selection at Min -
er’s Gems. This is more than a jewelry store, it’s a treasure chest of stunningly beautiful pieces. Owner Meeta Jethani and her husband opened Miner’s Gems in Las Vegas after the pandemic shut down their storefronts on cruise ships. Since then, they’ve found great success with their shop at The Venetian. The beautiful pieces and rare stones they carry are worth a look, even if you don’t decide to buy. “Our gold selection is our crowd puller,” Jethani says. “But we have a huge selection of diamond baguette jewelry and specialty stones and one-ofa-kind pieces. We have stuff from a reasonable $500 to like half a million.”
Some of Jethani’s favorite pieces (pictured) include a
light blue natural aquamarine necklace, with diamonds set in 14-carat white gold; a 100-carat tanzanite necklace with diamonds all around; a hand-fabricated gold tourmaline set in 18-carat gold that can be used as a pendant or pin; a tanzanite and diamond bracelet; an 18.24-carat
royal blue sapphire ring set in 18-carat gold with custom-cut trapezoid and halfmoon stones; a natural green diamond ring (a very, very rare diamond); a diamond bracelet with emerald and round cut diamonds; a gold necklace with morganite, rubies, emeralds, sapphires and diamonds;

From something special to wear to something special to drink, head to the unique Spirits & Spice. Cocktails and liqueurs and spices and oils, oh my! The store lets guests mix, match, try and buy small-batch alcohol like whiskey, tequila, rum, vodka and liqueurs. You can create your own recipes or just buy the spirits straight. When it comes to cooking, browse a selection of oils, balsamics and seasonings, and select, bottle and take home your favorites. “The best part about the store is we let you try before you buy,” says River Pizzimenti, sales
associate. The store stocks cocktail-making supplies and tools so you can bartend to your heart’s content. And don’t miss the selection of bottled wine—around 40-50 brands from all around the world.
Currently, one of the best-selling whiskies at Spirits & Spice is the Two Bitch Bour-
bon out of Eureka, Nev.; the company is named after the owner’s two rescue dogs, Sage and Scarlet. Price points for many of the small-batch spirits start around a reasonable $34 and can go all the way up to $1,000.

Bauman Rare Books
–Pamela Raia, salesman at Bauman Rare Books
It’s another shop where one could spend hours browsing the merchandise, especially lovers of the written word.
“Three things that determine the value of the rare book: the condition and completeness
(is it as close to original as possible?); the scarcity (How many still exist?); and lastly, the title has to be interesting to collectors,” says salesman Pamela Raia. “Bauman Rare Books is very much a bespoke
service. We always say, ‘You’re not only buying a book, you’re buying someone to assist you with your collection over the long term.’ We help with book care, how to build your library, the environment to keep books in, the storage.”
One of the most treasured books is Thomas McKenney’s and James Hall’s North American Indians, early edition, second octavo edition from 1854 ($25,000). The illustrations are of indigenous leaders who traveled to government offices to have their portraits painted. (This was prior to photography.) The original portraits burned in a fire, but luckily McKenney and Hall preserved the images by making illustrations of each of the paintings. “They made
the illustrations based off the original paintings and without them doing this, we would not have these images of very important Native American chiefs,” Raia says.
Other special book selections include Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice, the first American edition of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights and the first edition of Sigmund Freud’s Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis inscribed by him to a friend. Familiar names in literature also include books by Charles Dickens (a first edition of Oliver Twist), Walt Whitman and Ralph Waldo Emerson.

The most expensive book on display at Bauman Rare Books is the $60,000 first English translation of Democracy in America by Alexis de Tocqueville, long considered one of the most important texts in political literature.
Blake Shelton has the best of both worlds as a headliner and bar owner on the Strip
By Matt Kelemen
lake Shelton is rapidly becoming a honky-tonk man about town on the Las Vegas Strip as of late. He performed for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest from his Stripside music venue/restaurant Ole Red on Dec. 31, then turned his attention to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace to make his debut as a resident headliner. Blake Shelton: Live in Las Vegas may be long overdue, but the country superstar has only recently managed to make room on his perpetually full plate for the six performances.
Shelton previewed two songs likely to be part of the Live in Las Vegas set at the New Year’s Eve show. His latest single, “Texas,” almost seems like a long-awaited follow up to “Austin,” the song that launched his career and gave him his first No. 1 country hit in 2001. His guest vocals on Post Malone’s “Pour Me a Drink” put him back on top of the country airwaves and became a Top 5 hit. Further plans for the show remain unspecified. It’s probable that the setlist will draw on his 14 No. 1 hits from Billboard ’s Hot Country Songs chart and 29 top airplay singles. It’s possible that there might be a guest or three, most notably Gwen Stefani. Shelton made a surprise appearance at his wife’s Just a Girl residency at Planet Hollywood in February 2020, right about the time their duet “Nobody but You” was the most popular country song on radio. They could duet on “Purple Irises” from Stefani’s 2024 album Bouquet or “Happy
Anywhere” from Shelton’s 2021 album Body Language. Live in Las Vegas probably wouldn’t have happened at all if Shelton hadn’t resigned from his coaching positions on talent competition series The Voice in 2023. Shelton had been with the program since it launched and fatefully met fellow coach Stefani after both were bouncing back from divorces, but he wanted to spend more time with Stefani and his stepsons than a television gig would allow.
8 p.m. Feb. 5, 7-8, 12, 14-15, starting at $89 plus tax and fee. ticketmaster.com
Shelton’s career has been a roller coaster ride for most of its duration. The musically talented youth emerged soon after Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Achy Breaky Heart” had caused mainstream audiences to view country music as good for little more than an occasional novelty hit. Shelton grabbed the reigns of traditionalist country as practiced by George Strait, Randy Travis and George Jones, and set out for a long ride.
He moved to Nashville at 17 and released “Austin” through Giant Records in April 2001. He followed that up with “All Over Me” and “Ol’ Red,” with the latter becoming his signature song. He still had long locks when he released The Dreamer in 2003, followed by Blake Shelton’s Barn & Grill in 2004.
It was 2011’s Red River Blue that promoted him to superstar status, with songs such as “Honey Bee,” “Over” and “God Gave Me to You” becoming No. 1 singles and concert staples. Now Shelton is a living country legend with a residency worthy of his accomplishments in a town ideal for his outsized, charismatic personality.

Every time that little smile spreads across your face, or you get that warm, fuzzy feeling, that is your brain releasing dopamine into the body. Ahhh, dopamine, nature’s ecstasy! And, as humans, we seek out ways in the world to activate our brain to release more and more of it.
tic CEO Jennifer van Dijk. “(It’s) the perfect home for our kind of twisted humor to be brought to life.”
Now, what if there was a place you could go to trigger hit after hit of dopamine? There is—thanks to the creative genius of intellectual property company Superplastic. Head to AREA15 and visit the arts and entertainment district’s newest tenant, Superplastic’s Dopeameme Institute for Pleasure Research (D.I.P.R.).
“There is no more perfect place for us than to be at AREA15,” says Superplas-
In the same vein as Disney or Marvel, Superplastic designs and creates characters and content to share with audiences, especially those on social media like TikTok, YouTube and Instagram. That content has gone viral and triggered a slew of artistic collaborations with stars like Post Malone and Paris Hilton and brands like Gucci, Fortnite and Tommy Hilfiger. Superplastic’s world of characters has been turned into collectible toys and fashionable
apparel, and now the company has branched into the immersive attraction world with its fi rst-ever, in-real-life experience, the Dopeameme Institute For Pleasure Research. “It’s really important to us to fi nd new ways to engage our fans,” van Dijk says. “We wanted to make something that would really bring people into our world and excite our fans who knows us but also give us an opportunity to get new fans and discover who we are.”

So, just what is this D.I.P.R. experience? Simply put, it’s a walk-through, story-driven immersive adventure where the most wellknown characters from Superplastic, like Janky, Dayzee and Guggimon, guide visitors through a series of rooms that will illicit dopamine hits to the body through interactive
experiences. If you put your science hat on, you’ll remember that the body produces dopamine through activities like exercise and dancing, and at D.I.P.R. you’ll get to do both in rooms like “Heavy Pedal,” a laundromat-themed space where you’ll pedal on a stationary bike, or the “Private Dancer” room, a space that looks like an o ce building bathroom where you’ll step into your own stall and dance like no one is watching. Inside these rooms, you’ll also be taken through a series of tests guided by Superplastic characters that comically reveal their warped, twisted sense of humor. Besides the rooms, there are a ton of di erent activations and Easter eggs that help deliver a rush of dopamine to visitors as they make their way through the

Outside of the ticketed attraction is The Dopeameme
Shop, open to ticket holders and visitors of AREA15. It’s here that Superplastic o ers exclusive merch like collectibles and cheeky impulse buys. It’s also where fans can take pictures with lifesize Janky and Guggimon characters set within a comical hijinks scene involving a truck and hot dog cart.
“We are really proud of this experience,” van Dijk says. “We’re excited about the potential and partnership with AREA15. I really think this can be a cool part of our business model going forward. Come play and have fun with us!”
Mariah Carey ’s latest residency celebrates the inspiration that led to her career comeback
The most wonderful time of the year to catch Mariah Carey begins during the holidays and extends through Valentine’s Day. Each year Carey’s single “All I Want for Christmas Is You” rises to the top of the charts as she performs a round of seasonal concerts, channeling the holiday spirit for her superfans she a ectionately refers to as “lambs.” This year she segued from celebrating Christmas into the latest dates of her Mariah Carey: The Celebration of Mimi Live residency in Las Vegas.
Carey’s 10th studio album, The Emancipation of Mimi, was released nearly two decades ago. It was more than a comeback album for Carey, who had weathered the critical and commercial failure of 2001 fi lm Glitter as well as Virgin Records buying out her recently signed $100 million contract. She then moved over to Island Records
and released Charmbracelet in 2002 to lukewarm response. Undaunted, Carey was determined to get her mojo working and make her next album worthy of comeback classification.
Once production was underway and she began turning inspiration into songs, Island exec L.A. Reid made two suggestions: Work with Jermaine Dupri and include the nickname he had heard her called by members of her inner circle. “Mimi” was Carey at her most authentic, unguarded and fun.
The Emancipation of Mimi put Carey back on top, with Dupri collaborations “It’s Like That” and “Shake It O ” rising high on the charts. “We Belong Together" became the album’s smash hit, though, staying at No. 1 for 14 weeks and becoming a 2005 song of the summer. Carey was back on top for good.
Lambs couldn’t ask for more. Carey kicked o the last date of her summer residency shows with her fi rst No. 1, 1990’s “Vision of Love” before performing “Emotions” (No. 1, 1991), “Make It Happen” (No. 5, 1992) and “I’ll Be There” (No. 1, 1992). She’s joined by Trey Lorenz, who had performed the song with Carey for her MTV Unplugged special.
Lorenz is one of Carey’s four backup singers for Celebration, which features eight dancers, a four-piece band and a lot of costume changes under the supervision of stylist Wilfredo Rosado.
8 p.m. Feb. 5, 7-8, 12, starting at $99 plus tax and fee. ticketmaster.com
The album’s success help lay the foundation for Carey’s later headlining residencies at Caesars Palace, and directly inspired her current Dolby Live engagement. It’s not so much that she wants to pay tribute to Emancipation as apply the spirit that fueled that creative period to a show with a loose autobiographical thread and a chronological setlist.
Carey’s couture reflects with the eras she covers.
Some albums get a little extra representation while others, including Glitter and Charmbracelet, are referenced in medleys.
Emancipation provides the concert’s climax though, with both eight songs from the album and a medley taking up the lion’s share of the show. The set design’s lush and elegant backgrounds contrast with the kineticism and clutter that are characteristic of many contemporary stage concepts, leaving plenty of room for Carey’s singing to fi ll up her fans’ senses. Celebration of Mimi is Carey at her iconic best.
