The Name Game
Fifty years and counting, this genre-defining band delivers the hits
Is there a Marshall Tucker in The Marshall Tucker Band? There is not. Nor has there ever been. But it doesn’t matter when the name helped to shape a band whose sound defined the Southern rock genre of the 1970s (along with bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet and 38 Special).
Indeed, this long-lasting band has featured more than 25 different members over its history, never making its fame about individual members, letting the music speak for itself. So, in a way, it’s very fitting that its namesake was never a member.
Indeed, the man whose moniker inspired the band’s name was a piano tuner whose name was inscribed on a warehouse door key where the band had been rehearsing. The rest was history, with
iconic tunes like “Can’t You See,” “Heard It In a Love Song,” “Searchin’ for a Rainbow,” “Take the Highway” and “Fire on the Mountain” enjoying tons of radio airplay.
As the band, which despite numerous lineup changes remains headed by lead vocalist Doug Gray, makes its way to Vegas for what is sure to be a nostalgia-filled night, it’s a bit poignant that the man whose name still embodies the group’s spirit passed away last year. He was proud of their legacy, and the band’s legion of fans surely agrees. – Ken Miller

Different Digs, Still Stellar
Magician changes showrooms, but his impressive skills remain the same
With the recent closing of his previous home, The Mirage, to make way for the Hard Rock Hotel, magician Shin Lim had to find a new home to work his magic, and he has found it at The Palazzo Theatre at The Venetian. Fans who remember his Mirage shows will notice one significant difference: He won’t have his usual co-star, mentalist (and fellow America’s Got Talent alumnus) Colin Cloud, who provided a bit of comedic relief amid Lim’s mind-blowing set pieces (Cloud is now performing in his own one-man show at Harrah’s Las Vegas!). But rest assured: Lim is more than capable of sustaining a show on his own. After all, the man has won AGT not once but twice (the regular season and the Champions edition).
If you’ve never seen Lim’s show before, you are in for some of the most elegant and jaw-dropping illusions even seen on a Vegas stage. For instance, you might see the illusion that won him the 2015 championship of the Federation Internationale des Societes Magiques in close-up card magic, which Lim is very proud of, as this competition is notoriously hard to win. You might also see the illusion that fooled both Penn and Teller on their reality competition, Penn & Teller: Fool Us. (An important note: They’re not often fooled.) And you might see the act that won his respective AGT seasons. – Ken Miller
