You only think of your Water Heater when you are forced to take a cold shower on a chilly morning… But in reality there are many factors to consider. CHOOSING THE RIGHT CAPACITY Most water heaters are sold on the basis of how many gallons they hold. For example, two to four people might use 80 to 85 gallons of water per day -- enough for about three showers, one laundry load, running the dishwasher once and turning on the faucet nine times. Bigger is not necessarily better when it comes to choosing the size of a water heater. If you install a tank that is too small, you'll run out of hot water before finishing your shower. Conversely, if you get a tank that's too big, you will be wasting money on heating water that won't be used.
STORAGE TANK WATER HEATERS are the most common type and the best water heaters to buy. These units have an insulated tank where water is heated and stored until it is needed. • Storage tank water heaters are designated by the amount of water they hold in gallons. Tank size is one of the major considerations when purchasing one of these water heaters. If you intend to use a storage tank water heater, Bradford White offers a variety of sizes to suit your needs. These tanks are available in 20, 30, 40, 50 and 65 gallon sizes, also with the option of a single or double element. • Another consideration for storage tank water heaters is the recovery rate — the number of gallons of water they can heat in an hour. The greater your demand for hot water, the higher recovery rate you need.
HADCO is an authorised distributor for Bradford White Water Heaters and offers an unmatched 6 year warranty on the inner tank and a 2 year warranty on the element and thermostat. Feel free to contact any of our knowledgeable Customer Service Representatives who will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
• When you buy a water heater, look at the energy efficiency and yearly operating costs before deciding which one is right for your needs. This information can be found on the Energy Guide label. Bradford White is energy star rated and strives to be environmentally responsible.

Create a check list of the safety equipment needed on the job:
• Head Protection – Certified Hard Hats – MSA (Mine
Richard Thompson
Safety Appliance) is a top affordable brand.
Director (Oil and Gas Division) Industrial Rubber Products Ltd
When beginning any home improvement project it’s imperative that your contractor and your family are on the same page, with full consideration into all areas of safety. Involving your family seems unnecessary until something becomes unsafe and without their input from day one, what may seem like an ordinary day, could turn into something horribly wrong. Starting with the right information and attitude matters the most and finding a contractor who cares about your safety and their workers is a great starting point. At the end of the day no one ever wants anyone to get injured and proper safety management must incorporate a genuine approach to the fundamental value for life. Changing a bulb or adding a wonderfully modern kitchen, involves the same risk and reward but thinking safely makes that reward ever so much more enjoyable. I would first of all recommend that you move out while the construction has to take place but if that cannot happen, there are some key areas of household management you must look into.
Working safely with documentation
If you hire a contractor asks them for any safety records they have used on other jobs. Request the presence of a safety officer or a safety consultant. If the job is big, even go as far as asking them if they have STOW (Safe to Work practice) Certification. Stow may well be more common to the Energy Sector so you can ask for simpler documentation such as; • A HSE orientation form. • A Job Hazard Analysis form. • Any Tool Box Meetings they may have had on any jobs in the past or intend to do. • Any Contractors Method Statement. If that fails and your contractor has none of the above then you can do two things. Firstly find another contractor, or work with the contractor on the task in hand educating yourself about safety as well as getting your contractor on board with your safe way of thinking.
• Hand and Feet Protection – Steel Toe Safety Boots – good Brands are available from IRP Fire and Safety, Frank Moutett or Safetec.
General Safety Concerns Working at heights
Too many times in Trinidad there is little regards for safety at heights and in many cases it’s the lack of common sense that kills us. Any reputable contractor will understand that they are liable for their workers and if you have any work at home that requires fixing, painting or pressure washing it becomes much harder when it’s above six feet. Whatever is used as a safety system you must consider the following: • Impact – what is below the work on hand, what will stop the worker from falling and what safety systems can be used to save the worker if he does fall? • Systems – Make sure the ladders you use are secure and the scaffolding you erect is certified for the number of workers and height. • If anyone is working on the roof of your house they must use safety equipment that can take their weight as well as stop them from hitting the ground. You must even consider the swing when they fall and use your commonsense to prevent any critical accidents. • Remember Safety Equipment is designed and engi neered to protect the person if it fits them, most full body harnesses must be fitted to the individual and the lanyard (at the rare of each harness) has a shock cord which extends between 3 and 3.5 feet with a stretch, so the full safety concern before you hit the floor must be the height of the person, plus the lanyard plus the exten sion of release. • You can get 6 and 12ft SRL’S (Self-Retracting Lanyards) which lock immediately when someone falls, this can be hooked onto a Caribiner which is fastened onto the scaf folding. Make sure the scaffolding can take the weight of the worker. (see picture)
• Hand Protection – Ask questions around what materials workers may be handling? Is it steel and rubble alone? Oils and heat? What do I need to protect against? If you can cover, chemicals, heat, abrasion and comfort then you will find the right glove. • Respiratory Protection – Most construction sites require some form of respiratory protection mainly from dust but never overlook all areas, make sure you don’t have chemicals on location and need some form of full face or half face respirator for the workers. Always consult the labels to see what cartridge works for what chemicals. • Availability of Safety Kits and Emergency numbers are always overlooked, I’m sure 90% of our readers today have no Safety Aid Kits at home nor have ever shared an Emergency number with their workers and families. • If someone is tied off on a roof when working make sure they have roof FP Roofers Kits – MSA - Mine Safety Appliances. Or any other reputable Roofer’s kit. Most individuals tie off on roofs and don’t think of what they are tied off on and the weight of the individual falling pulls the anchorage point out, failing the system immediately. So engineering the anchorage point is as important as the equipment itself.
Possibility of a Fire
Remember on any construction site you always have welding. So make sure if a fire does occur you have: • A fire extinguisher that can work close to the point of welding. • The correct safety gear is used, especially face, hands and eye protection. • Too many times workers in Trinidad prefer to wear shades and look cool rather than wear the right welder’s glasses. Edoos Welding is a good supplier to shop at. If a fire does break out, make sure you and your family know the basics: • Never open a door that feels hot. Escape another way. • Take the safest route, but if you have to go through smoke, crawl low and under the smoke. • Cover your nose and mouth with a moist towel (if possible) or an article of clothing. • Immediately leave your house, and then call for help. • Once you’re out, stay out. Don’t go back in, not even to grab someone else.
A SRL system
– available at IRP FIRE AND SAFETY
Ending safely
Most homeowners mean well and with proper planning anyone can carry out home improvements safely. There are many more areas that I haven’t covered in this article but the key to understanding what is required is thinking with the end in mind, asking simple questions that any sensible person can answer. What would be considered safe for me and my family? How do I protect my child from a falling block? Would I prefer that my kid was on that roof and how would I protect them? Would my child walk through this rubble barefoot? Having a “Safe Way of thinking” takes training and time, but starting at home means so much more to your family than you think, so why you should spend time and money on a home, if it’s not a safe one.

So you've decided it's time to create your dream kitchen but you don't know where to begin. Don't worry it's easy and also the most enjoyable part of the project. Create a kitchen wish list file. This will help you communicate clearly your wants and desires to your kitchen designer. Magazine cutouts, printed pictures from the internet, and the rough measurements of the existing space are all key components to the file. Samples of cabinet finishes, counter top materials, flooring, backsplash tiles, paint samples and any materials or images that are an inspiration for the vision will assist in creating a smooth design and renovation process.
For those looking to add a little extra oomph to their kitchen, AyA offers a variety of different options to help upgrade your space. Not to be confused with accessories or ornamentation, upgrades apply strictly to how the kitchen is built (boxes, doors, drawers, hinges & finishes). Below are just a few of our top choices for upgrading your kitchen.
Is the current eating space sufficient for your family’s needs?
There are many items which need to be considered before undertaking a major home renovation. The cost of cabinetry is only one aspect of the total amount depending on what is required. It is important to set your budget for the entire space allotting amounts to each element-cabinetry, appliances, flooring, paint, structural-if necessary etc. AyA means design and our professional in house designers will work with you to develop a plan that will fit your style and budget. It is highly recommended that you work with a contractor to co-ordinate various trades that may be involved in your renovation. You may require an electrician, plumber, tile installer, painter etc. These are all materials and trades that need to be considered when setting your budget.
• Do you require more space than you have right now? • Do you have enough storage space? • Does the placement of your appliances make cooking efficient? • Is there enough counter space? • Does your kitchen require more than just cabinetry? ie-a desk for a computer • How many people are typically in the kitchen at once? • Are there any safety needs that should be considered for small children or others in your home?
Ask yourself Since the cabinetry makes the kitchen, AyA raises the bar by utilizing only high quality components. steel drawer box with 5/8” bottom 100% melamine interior clip on hinges including 3rd hinge on 42” wall cabinets 3/4 depth base cabinet shelves

Remodelling your kitchen is a major undertaking but well worth the effort. It gives you the opportunity to improve efficiency in the space, create a new look and the ability to plan for the future – at least 15 years or so of your future, as that’s typically how long a kitchen’s lifespan could be, or really, should be. Much can change in 15 years, so when it comes to remodelling, make sure you think very hard about what the space will be and whom it is meant to serve for that time. Planning is always key. Try to stay within the style that suits the architectural character of your home and don’t get too swept up in the trends. Relying on what has always worked for kitchen design will help make sure you have a space that doesn’t become dated. Consider the current kitchen layout. Does it reflect how you live now? Will the kitchen serve double-duty as your dining room? Do you cook daily or mostly as a hobby? What’s missing from the current kitchen that you always wanted? What does the current kitchen have that you want to keep? So, with some consideration to the above, start planning the layout. You will need to consider all the pieces that go towards completing a finished kitchen: cabinetry/storage, countertops, appliances, sink and faucet, flooring, lighting, island options, texture and colour and pattern. Literally – floor to ceiling and everything in-between. And perhaps most importantly, consider your budget as it will certainly be one of the most costly projects in any home remodel – but it will also add the most value to your home. Start your plan with the work-triangle – applying the elements that make the essential basis of kitchen design (the refrigerator, sink and range/cooktop). These should be close together but not crowded – usually from 5-8 feet apart – if you drew a line from one to another on your plan you should see a triangle – that’s a good start. Typical kitchen layouts are usually U-shaped, L-Shaped or Parallel (Galley) – plan which of these best suits the space that you have. This will give you the starting point to be able to determine placement of other possible elements, like an island. Everyone loves an island and for good reason. It gives us the single most desired request in a kitchen – more counter space, especially since most contemporary open – planned kitchens give us relatively less perimeter counter space than traditional enclosed kitchens. The great thing about an island is that it can be any size and it can serve any function that you need; as simple as offering preparation counter space, to having the sink or cooktop located within it. Review your appliance needs carefully and consider the long-term needs of the space. The range of appliances is
Randall Waddell CID, ASID Principal Interior Designer HomeWork Design Studio
vast and there’s something for every need these days. For example there are ranges, cooktops, vent-hoods, warming drawers, wall ovens (standard, convection, steam) and microwaves – and a host of options within those options. Then there’s the refrigerator (that option list is too long for this article), the independent ice-makers, the wine chillers, the dishwashers, garbage disposals and compactors. Even washers and dryers are now part of kitchen design. It’s a lot to consider – but do consider. The current popular colour for appliances is Stainless Steel, but white and black are making
big strides back into design. Cabinetry is the brains and beauty of a kitchen. Inside it keeps the space functioning with sufficient storage and outside it gives the eye something to admire. This is most important in planning, because you have many options here as well; doors, drawers, dumper-drawers, internal accessories like slide out shelving, lazy-Susans, etc. Then there are the materials other than wood - stainless steel, glass, plastics, lacquered finishes, laminates. Choose countertop materials that suit the need of the kitchen as well as for its looks. Don’t be afraid to use different types of material throughout the kitchen or even more than one colour; e.g. you may use a quartz on the perimeter counters and granite or marble on the island. Typical counter choices are Solid-surface, Granite, Marble, Ceramic Tile, Stainless Steel, Concrete, Quartz and more – each have pros and cons and variant price points. You should think function first before form when considering the sink. Its main purpose is for cleaning dishes and preparing food – so this will help determine the best size and features that fit your plan, the workload and your style. Flooring options are open wide these days – you can use the standard porcelain tile, Stone, Linoleum (yes –its back!), Vinyl, Wood (yes – wood!), bamboo and even laminates. Last but definitely not least – lighting. Without proper consideration to lighting your kitchen will likely be impractical and unattractive. Plan for layers of light as the lighting scheme is what will make your beautiful cabinetry, top appliances, perfect flooring and all the accessories SHINE. When all put together, you will be proud and happy to see your kitchen every single day for at least the next 15 years plus. Enjoy!

entertaining
12 September/October, 2013 @Home Magazine Sweet & Savoury Kitchen Makeovers
When you have a lime at home, ever notice how everyone ends up in the kitchen? It does not matter if the lime begins in the dining or living room. Everyone is drawn to the kitchen. This is a serious traffic jam if your kitchen is small or laid out poorly. You want your kitchen to be as comfortable as your living or family room. The size and layout of your kitchen affects how effectively and comfortably you can entertain. When designing a kitchen that functions as a comfortable entertaining space ask yourself the following questions How many people do you entertain? Is your party formal, informal, sit down or buffet? Are your guests served or do they help themselves? Do you do the cooking? Do your guests participate? Or are your parties fully catered? SQUARE FOOTAGE. While size is not an absolute precondition for a good lime, it sure helps if you do not have to fall over or sit on the other guests. The stress of a cramped space can take the fun out of entertaining and the enthusiasm out of your guests. Square footage can impact on how functional your entertaining kitchen is. If your kitchen is small, look to incorporate adjacent spaces. An open plan is perfect for incorporating the kitchen into other social spaces such as the living, family, dining or
game rooms or the patio or other outdoor rooms. Guests can use adjacent spaces as being part of the kitchen. LAYOUT. Layout trumps size to be the most important factor for an entertainer’s kitchen. A great layout will feature multiple gathering locations, open to other entertaining spaces and a great flow. An island, kitchen table or peninsula countertop is great for meal preparation, buffet and for dining. ‌ And if one island is good, two are better. If your party includes cooking and multiple cooks, multiple cooking stages are advantageous. Separate grill, ovens and cooktop with ample space around them helps. On the other hand, are your parties mostly catered? In that case the focus is on eating, drinking and socialising. Wide aisles accommodate multiple guests. Arrange everything in a way that will make it easy for your friends to get food and pour themselves a drink. Your kitchen needs to be adaptable for cooking and /or for entertaining. DECLUTTER AND CLEANUP. Regardless of how large or well laid out your kitchen may be, if it is messy and cluttered the aesthetics and functionality of the space will be seriously eroded. Keep counters and tables clear. Pack away any appliances and chaos on the countertop; the less space taken up in clutter, the more space for food, prep and people. After the party, more people can assist with clean-up if you have multiple sinks and dishwashers. CREATE AMBIANCE. Decorate with live flowers and other decorative accessories. But do not overdo the treatment. You do not want to promote clutter. Have some music playing in the background.

Blender By Halcian Pierre On average, the kitchen is one of those rooms where the most activity takes place. Think about it. You get up, brush your teeth, have a shower and then head to the kitchen to make breakfast (tea/coffee, sausages, cereal, etc). Later, you come in there for a snack and something to drink. By lunchtime, you’re in cooking mode and the entire stove (including the oven) gets a workout with the many dishes you have going. In the evening, you’ll tend to have something light (another cup of tea, perhaps), and as you settle in for some prime time viewing, your kitchen will have been cleaned up and ready for the next day’s activity. With that said, although the function of the kitchen hasn’t changed, the speed with which we prepare things and the very tools we used to do so, have. Today’s appliances are like miniature versions of some found in industrial sized kitchens, but they do pack a wallop of strength when it comes to output. What we’ve seen happen in the past few years is that many countertop kitchen appliances have become multitaskers. A stand mixer isn’t just a mixer anymore; with the right attachments it’s also a pasta-maker and an ice cream maker. The same goes for your chopper – today they slice, dice, shred and puree. Toaster ovens are like miniature ovens on their own. Kitchen purists can still take advantage of the single task machines like hand mixers and the like, but once you can afford any of these machines, you will certainly be pleased with the results, meal after meal, after meal...
Multipurpose Stand mixer Whether you bake often or simply love a good mashed potato, this versatile stand mixer is designed with enough power and capacity to prepare large batches of batter and other foods. Its ten speeds range from very slow stirring to very high beating, and it comes with a flat beater, dough hook, wire whip and pouring shield. Extras include an ice cream and pasta attachment.
Mini Chopper Just like its big brother the food processor, mini choppers take the stress off of chopping up herbs and other vegetables as you cook. Quick garlic sauces, seasonings and even pesto are a breeze for this machine’s stainless steel blades, and when you want to make a quick version of your favourite cheese paste, it’s there ready and waiting to bring your recipe to life.
Toaster oven So you think a toaster oven just makes toast, right? Wrong. It can do more. Once you have a model that boasts 1500 watts of power, you’re on. Toast a single layer of nuts in the tray (using a sheet of aluminium foil). It can also defrost frozen items. Reheat leftovers. Bake individual cakes, cookies and other treats – there are utensils sold locally that can fit in your toaster oven.
Multi-surface electric grill The brands are endless, but it’s still a beautiful multitasker when it comes to cooking surfaces. They sit easily on your counter and according to which removable plate you decide to use, you have yourself an open grill, a flat griddle for your pancakes and fritters, or even a fancy Panini press.
Immersion blender Since being invented in 1968 (believe it or not) immersion blenders have slowly invaded kitchens everywhere (including mine). Easy to use, easy to manoeuvre, all you have to do is immerse it in a pot or a bowl and press “on.” Much less work than dirtying up the blender so use it to puree your soups, make mayonnaise, vinaigrettes, salad dressings and even pesto.
Ipad stand Now that YouTube, Facebook and other internet-discovered recipes are a part of our daily cooking routines, you can consider investing in a gadget that makes it easier to watch cooking videos, search for recipes, listen to music and even video chat while you cook and entertain. It holds up your Ipad or tablet easily, and some even come with a splatter guard in case you get messy. The choices are varied, as you can find some that actually look like wooden cutting boards, or you can let your inner geek out with others that look like they came from the set of Star Wars. You can search for t his item online – and may the ‘sauce’ be with you.
The blender has gone hi-tech, and while it can do the usual (help you make a smoothie or margarita), you can get blenders that are quieter, pack more horsepower and can delicately handle soups while being strong enough to make delicious almond (or peanut) butter too.

Chandeliers can be used to even the lighting in the space.
Lighting can offer tremendous flexibility for your kitchen design project. They can be used for general room light, accent lighting and more importantly, task lighting. Here are some sensible-style ways to incorporate light into your kitchen.
Lighting over the kitchen table is multipurpose; it can be used for dining, homework, hobbies, family business etc. A decorative pendant will provide sufficient task lighting while adding a touch of style and personality to your space.
Today’s recessed fixtures are available with a variety of trims, including metallic, so you can add a bit of flair as well as function. Also, not all recessed fixtures are round! Square downlighters have gained popularity with homeowners who are searching for a unique design look.
Island counters and breakfast bars demand efficient lighting. A very good solution is to add a group of miniature pendants. Mount each pendant so that the bottom of the shade is approximately 66” above the floor, this makes it possible to look across the room below the pendants. If the shades are not very deep and there is seating at the kitchen island or peninsula, install the pendants a few inches lower.
Under cabinet lighting will quickly and easily illuminate your countertops. It is available in a variety of choices, energy-efficient fluorescents and LED lighting systems.
Mount pendant fixtures 30” above the table top. If your table is round, the fixture should ideally be 12” narrower than the diameter of the table. For square and rectangular tables, choose a fixture that is 12” narrower than the smallest side. Tip - Consider putting your kitchen lighting on dimmers. The different levels of light can add depth and dramatic impact to your space. Electrical wiring can cover a number of different areas, from the breaker box panel, appliances to high voltage electrical systems. Have you ever seen a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet in a kitchen of any older home? The reason for this is that older homes and their wiring systems were not set up for all of the modern conveniences that we enjoy today. To explain further, we look at the kitchen. A modern kitchen uses more electricity than any other room in the house, thanks to the many appliances powered there. There are at least seven circuits that are needed in a kitchen, but by no means the only ones you may want to add for your convenience.
17
1.
4. 5.
HOW IT WORKS: Basically an electrical circuit is a path in which electrons from a voltage or current source flow. Electric current flows in a closed path called an electric circuit. The ‘source’ is the point where those electrons enter an electrical circuit and the ‘return or earth ground’ is where it leaves. The electrons between the points on the electrical circuit where it starts and where it ends is called a ‘load’. Here is some information on how some electrical circuits are incorporated into your kitchen.
You must take into account the appliances that will move from place to place, the ones that are stationary, outlet placement for optimal usage, lighting locations for optimal light coverage in the areas it is needed and any specialised outlets or flexible connections, such as built-in ovens etc.

1. Basic Lighting Circuit A 15-amp, 120-volt circuit powers the ceiling fixtures, recessed lights and task lighting in the room. 2. Refrigerator Circuit Refrigerators have gotten larger over the years, now there are refrigerators with built-in ice makers and water/ice dispensers built right into the door. These massive ice boxes can consume a lot of power, as such this circuit should be a dedicated 20-amp, 120-volt circuit. 3. Range Circuit Electric range circuits are needed to power the cooking area of your new kitchen. A 50-amp dedicated circuit supplies the power to the range/oven. Ranges have a special cord that plugs into a special range outlet.
4. Microwave Circuit Microwaves have also gotten larger over the years and have demanded more power due to the amount of wattage they use. They require a dedicated 20-amp, 120-volt circuit. 5. Small Appliance Circuits Small appliance circuits are those that supply small, portable appliances. These may include toasters, coffee makers, blenders, juicers etc. There must be at least two dedicated circuits for these countertop and eating area outlets. A minimum of two 20-amp, 120-volt dedicated circuits should be used. 6. Dishwasher Circuit The dishwasher circuit is also a 15-amp, 120-volt circuit.
Hiring a certified electrician is advisable. It is very important that all circuits mentioned above be wired using the correct gauge of electrical wire.

Anything you can do yourself…
do it! This will save you a lot of money in the long run.

Whether you like it or not, the kitchen is the place you and your family will spend a lot of time. Over the years your kitchen probably got drab and boring. All that grease and gunk is probably oozing down your walls right? Well, it is time to revamp your kitchen. How exactly do you do that on a low budget? It is quite easy actually. First of all, you need to make small changes. There is no need to do anything major. You can keep your cupboards. There is no need to get rid of them. Some varnish might help revamp them. If your flooring is good you can keep that too. If not, you may want to consider tiling. Tiles are quite inexpensive now and almost every tile company is having a sale. The cost you really have to consider here is the labour. It may be a bit costly to get someone to tile your kitchen. Depending on the size of your kitchen the labour could cost anywhere between $2000 to $3000. If you can do the tiling yourself well that would save you a whole lot. This brings us to the next point. Anything you can do yourself…do it! This will save you a lot of money in the long run. Paint your walls and change your bulbs and cupboard handles yourself. When replacing cupboard handles, look for ones that you know will not rust easily or those that are easy to clean. The next thing you need to do is use your head! Be creative. Yes, getting new appliances and replacing countertops would be excellent but you just can’t afford it. So, what do you do? Simply spray paint your refrigerator, or get the tile guy to place some tiles on your countertops for you. If your countertop is wooden then sand it down and varnish it and it will be as good as new. Updating the lighting is another inexpensive way you can spruce up your kitchen. There is no need to rewire; simply get some pretty bulbs and maybe even an inexpensive chandelier…nothing too fancy… get one that says “kitchen”. Some chandeliers are as low as $250. An inexpensive way to remodel your kitchen is to simply remodel in phases. Don’t do everything all at once. You can change cupboard handles one month, then purchase tiles the other month, then pay to have the tiling done the following month and so on. Trying to get everything completed all at once is guaranteed to get you frustrated. One important thing you need to remember when remodelling your kitchen is to shop around. Always look around for a better quality or a better price. If you think one tile guy is charging too much then look around and ask around too so you’ll know the type of work the person does. As you know, everywhere you go in Trinidad and Tobago the prices vary so looking around for a price and quality that suits you and your pocket is not a bad thing. When remodelling your kitchen remember to be creative and enjoy the job!

Whan Tong Agencies has been a distributor of bathroom and kitchen fixtures in Trinidad and Tobago for over 45 years and is highly respected for providing quality products and services. This was achieved greatly in part from the relationship between Whan Tong and Delta® Faucet Company. The History: In 1993, Whan Tong Agencies was approached by Delta® Faucet Company to become the sole distributor for their Delta® brand in Trinidad and Tobago. As the years progressed, business increased and the relationship between both companies strengthened. It was not too long after that Delta® faucets soon became the #1 demanded faucet in the country.
In 2000, Delta® saw growth in the high-end builder and wholesaler showroom markets which prompted the introduction of Brizo® - an upscale kitchen and bath collection, named for a Greek goddess who appeared in the dreams of mariners. Brizo exemplifies inspiration, beauty, performance and reliability. It’s a premium faucet brand that promises distinctive design, inventive faucets and accessories that make a fashion statement in the home. Today, Brizo is sought after by many interior designers. “We are always engaging in providing new products, new services and have a passion for promoting the latest technologies in the bathroom and kitchen industry. Are you in the market for a new refrigerator? At FENS, you can find a selection of premium choices by Maytag to suit your kitchen design, tastes and personality. Here are some pointers to consider when buying a refrigerator: 1. SIZE UP YOUR SPACE Measure the height, width and depth of your space where you are placing your refrigerator. Determine how much space you would need when opening its doors. 2. START YOUR RESEARCH Even if you are not buying online, you can use the web to get more information on the type of refrigerators that are available. You can access the manufacturer's website directly to get the features and specifications. You should also consider purchasing locally for related warranty and after service care. At FENS we offer both factory warranty and after sales service. 3. WHAT TYPE OF REFRIGERATOR SUITS MY NEEDS? At FENS, you have four options to choose from, and each comes with its own pros and cons. Figuring out which one is best for you is the first, most obvious step towards making a final buying decision. Top Freezer This style is the most popular style and usually separates the fridge into two parts, one third for your frozen goods and two thirds for fresh food storage. Top freezers offer some of the best bargains on the market. Bottom Freezer Bottom freezer units tend to be just slightly bigger than top freezers. French door Highly popular, French-door models combine the drawerstyle freezer of a bottom-freezer unit with the low-clearance doors of a side-by-side unit. This means that you'll have a full-width, double-door fridge with plenty of storage space.
Dual-Cool™ Temperature Management System Side-by-side Side-by-side units split your fridge right down the middle, offering you frozen foods on the left and fresh foods on the right. Many of these features are aimed at saving space, especially when it comes to the shelving inside the doors. Sideby-side units also require much less clearance to open the doors, making them ideal for narrow kitchens. Due to the vertical split, you'll probably want to go with the widest model that will fit into your kitchen, and your budget. Features: • Store-N-Door Ice Dispensing System • Right Size Ice Cubes • ENERGY STAR Qualified • Cubed/Crushed Ice and Water Dispenser • FreshLock Crisper with Humidity Control • Water Filter Indicator Light • Adjustable Spill-Catcher Shelves • Adjusti-Temp Deli Drawer • Adaptive Defrost • Control Lockout • PUR Push-Button Water and Ice Filter with Indicator Light 4. GET THE 411 After you have picked out your fridge ask the retailer about the final details. Is there any delivery charge? Have they ever heard any complaints about this refrigerator? How much will it cost? What is the warranty period and what kind of repairs does it cover? How often do we have to change the water filter (If it comes with a water dispenser)? Where can we buy replacement parts? Is there regular maintenance that we can do to keep the fridge working well? If we want to return the fridge, will we have to pay to have it picked up? Together, Whirlpool and Maytag emerge a more com-

Christine Dalkan Creating an environmentally conscious space means making a lot of informed choices as a homeowner, from the appliances you purchase to the materials you use in your design. When shopping for kitchen appliances, remember to look for models that carry the ENERGY STAR, which tells you they are energy efficient. Keep in mind, these appliances may be a little on the pricey side, however they are good longterm investments and protecting the environment is invaluable. Energy efficient refrigerators use less energy than older models. ENERGY STAR certified refrigerators use about 15 per cent less energy than other models, allowing you to cut your energy bills and help save the environment. Water saving dishwashers use half as much water as others and thus, also helps you conserve the energy used to pump it, treat it and heat it in your home. Look for features such as ‘energy saving’ and ‘short wash’ cycles; a more efficient operating cycle means you use less water. Choose a dishwasher which offers an air drying option; while heat drying using a lot of energy, air drying uses very little. LED lights are energy saving light sources and provide great task lighting for the kitchen. You can install LED under cabinet lights (under the upper cabinets to light your counter) and LED strips over the cabinet to provide soft glow. It is a good idea to make the investment and purchase the LED lights, which provide a yellowy, softer light than the harsh whitish/bluish hue of the inexpensive ones. Microwave ovens that are fast and efficient tend to use around 50 percent to 65 percent less energy than conventional ovens. Eco electric kettles are your best option when it comes to boiling water. Some water filters come with a built-in automatic shut-off in the system. That way, even if one of the kids or even you forget to turn off the tap, the water filter helps you to conserve water. Wood, bamboo, bio-glass, resin and stainless steel are great eco-friendly materials to use when designing your counters and countertops. Concrete also gets the green thumbs-up if created locally. In fact, sourcing most of your materials from local manufacturers, if possible is a good way to lessen your footprint. Starting a kitchen garden is another great way to go green. This way, if you’ve the outdoor space to work with, you can cultivate vegetables organically to feed your family. However, many times, homeowners may not have a lot of outdoor space to work with. You can still grow a little herb garden in a raised box right outside your kitchen window or right on the window sill.

Dwayne Ifill dj_ifill@hotmail.com
As a professional painter or a homeowner, it’s always smart to use the best painting practices when doing your interior or exterior painting. Most of us can do an okay job of painting a room. But a seasoned professional does a great job. Obviously, pros have more experience than the average homeowner, but they also know techniques and tricks that make them better painters. With that in mind, here are some painting tips by Dwayne Ifill you should be sure to keep when doing your end of year painting projects around your home, that would make your project faster, easier and a lot more fun and ensuring better results. To begin, move everything out of the room. Every painter or homeowner has a horror story about the time they didn't follow Rule No. 1. Bigger pieces of furniture can sometimes be left covered in the centre of larger rooms, but if you are repairing walls, Dwayne of Beyond Paint, suggests: "Take everything out as wall dust goes everywhere." Remove or tape off light fixtures and hardware, and label everything with masking tape if necessary. Also, invest in drop cloths. "It's surprising how well a few drops of paint can cover a floor." Buy high-quality drop cloths, such as canvas. (Paint soaks right through newspapers, lightweight fabrics and bed sheets.) Plastic sheeting works, but it's very slippery and doesn't absorb drips. Prepare surfaces; find, then fix cracks and holes. Use painter's putty or a lightweight spackle filler for minor cracks and holes. Damaged wood requires a slightly different approach. “Don't use spackle on wood," says Dwayne, "because it just won't stick." For damaged trim, I use painter's putty or a two-part wood filler, you can pick up at hardware or paint store. Smooth any repairs, bumps and nibs with a sander or sandpaper. For smoother walls and better adhesion, some painters sand all previously painted walls regardless of the shape they're in. Sanding not only feathers out chipped paint but also provides "tooth" for the next coat of paint.
Candy Apple is the perfect touch that easily uplifts moods and inspire creativity

For glossy trim, use a sanding sponge rather than sandpaper. Sponges mold to the shape of the trim and last longer than paper. Sponge-bath walls unless you like textured walls, don't paint over dust. Wash the walls with a mild cleaner. To clean a wall, use two buckets. Load up your rag or sponge from your cleaning-solution bucket, and scrub. Before redipping, rinse the sponge in a second bucket filled with clean water. When it comes to using tape, masking tape is problematic. Paint can bleed behind the tape, or remove the paint it's stuck to. Try a painter’s (blue)
tape. Another problem is bridging. Latex paints form a skin, and painted tape can tear the skin, resulting in a ragged rather than a sharp line. Lastly, taping takes time. “Learning how to cut in with a brush takes practice, but if you can do it, you'll leave most tapers in the dust." (Cutting in is painting just the surface you want, not the surface adjacent to it for example, where a wall meets the ceiling.) When selecting paint, homeowners should try to use paint samples no matter how good their colour sense. There’s no substitute for seeing the exact colour you’ve chosen on the very surface you’ll be painting. So, take a drive to your preferred paint store and spend a couple of dollars for a paint sample and apply it to your desired surface to make sure your colour pick is perfect. Another practice you shouldn’t ignore is use of primers. Primers aren't just diluted paint. They're formulated to establish a solid, even base, seal stains and ensure that the topcoats of paint go on smoothly and bond securely to the surface. Primer can affect the appearance of the topcoat. "It's okay to spotprime the ceilings but not the walls, because primed spots will show." Use quality paint in general; glossier paints are more stain-resistant and easier to scrub, but a higher sheen also highlights any imperfections in the wall or in the paint job. “Flat paints are fine for ceilings and formal rooms, but for most of my customers, I recommend an eggshell satin finish. It's good for hallways, kids' rooms, even kitchens and baths,” says Dwayne. "Though we still use oilbased paints for restoration work, latex paints are fine for interior walls and new trim, as long as you don't go cheap on the paint." Professional painters and homeowners would have their personal favourites with paint brands, but they know good

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 22 paint does not come cheap. Using two coats of paint will result in the best looking finish. There are paints with mildewcide additives for bathrooms and kitchens that have built-in mildew fighters. These paints will prevent mildew from forming, but they won't kill mildew that's already there, because leftover mold spores can live beneath the paint and eventually work their way through to the surface. You should also prep bath and kitchen surfaces too. First, wash down the walls with a bleach solution (3/4 cup of bleach per gallon of water) then seal with a stain-blocking primer. Never work with sub-standard rollers and brushes – invest in well made, high quality applicators to do justice to your paint. They’ll apply the paint more evenly, making your painting effortless, and help you achieve superior results. The perfect roller would hold a roomful of paint, leave the right amount of texture, wouldn't fuzz, and would be easy to clean. (Unfortunately, one hasn’t been invented yet!) But follow these tips to choose the right roller; the thicker the nap, the more paint the roller will hold, but it will also create more texture. Less expensive rollers can work; just wash them in dishwashing liquid to remove any stray fibres prior to use. A painter's rod can help you paint ceilings and high areas quickly, no climbing up and down ladders required and there's no need to stand directly underneath the area you are painting, so you won't catch every wayward splatter. A rod is also great for floors. Buy better brushes; a good paintbrush is key to a professional looking finish. Quality brushes are a professional’s advantage, especially when paired with the techniques they use. The equipment has a lot to do with your success. I prefer natural bristle brushes for oil-based paints, but recommend synthetics for all-around use.
When choosing a brush, pay attention to the bristles. Synthetic brushes are made of nylon or polyester (or a combination of the two). Poly bristles are stiffer, which makes them good for exterior or textured work, but for fine interior work, Dwayne uses softer nylon brushes. Look also for tapered bristles, which can help you work to an edge, and flagged tips, which help spread the finish smoothly and evenly. Brushes are available in 1-inch to 4-inch widths. Most painters keep an arsenal of brushes on hand to match the job. A smaller brush gives you more control, but no one wants to paint a door with a 1-inch-wide brush. Dwayne recommends starting with a 2 to 2-1/2-inch brush. The angled brush makes it easier to cut to a line and puts more bristles on the work than a Nothing spices up a rich, gourmet kitchen quite like a playful pop of black raspberry. square-tipped brush. Always care properly for unused paint. Securely seal cans of leftover paint, label them with helpful information (especially if paint drippings conceal data on brand, colour, and sheen), and avoid storing them in an area that is subject to extreme heat. Not enough to save? Then make sure and dispose of the paint properly, following recommended procedures. Take pleasure in your painting as with other things you do in life. We can approach interior and exterior painting projects as either pleasant activities or disagreeable tasks. Make sure you are comfortable with your painting contractor of choice! This season, be positive in your approach to home painting. You might find it to be fulfilling, even fun. One thing’s for sure, you’re likely to be a lot more fun to be around! Best wishes from Dwayne and Beyond Paint for a safe, happy, and colourful season!

As a child, my mom made sure that anything in season grew in our yard; in other words, we were never out of food. There is a growing trend towards kitchen gardening. High cost of living, the abuse of chemicals and the unavailability of some foods encourages many to lean toward planting home grown fruits and organic vegetables.
Your kitchen garden does not require a lot of space. You can start your garden in a simple bed or a planter. Use pots or build boxes and hanging pots on your walls. You can even contact your nearest agriculture dept who will provide you with a grow box, tons of information and even plants. Now that you have your space and planters sorted, let’s put them together. But before that, make sure you have adequate sunlight for your plants. At the base of your planter place three to four inches of stone to allow drainage. Mix in equal parts of topsoil, manure, sharp sand and Promix, fill your planter and keep the rest for topping up. Some research is needed before buying plants. Find out how long some vegetables take to grow and produce their crop. This helps you space out what you’re planting; you don’t want to wake up one morning and find out you have more tomatoes than you know what to do with. A good rule of thumb is to plant three of anything you use. Planting new plants three or four weeks after the first set ensures that when your adult plants are finished bearing, you have new plants almost ready to produce. Learn to incorporate what you have planted into your daily meals; this helps you save money and eat healthy. After a few months you will find your green thumb. You may be great with eggplant or sweet peppers might be your thing. Also, you can find friends in your community you can barter with. Trade some of your tomatoes for
some of his peppers or some of your bodi for a few eddoes or dasheen. If done right, that weekly trip to the market may become obsolete. Don’t just think of veggies alone. Include herbs too. Buy two types for everything you use and very soon you will eliminate herbs from your market list. It is a feeling of accomplishment walk into your garden and pick fresh stuff to enhance your meals. Get the entire family involved. Let the kids help plant and water; the rewards will be awesome. Also, don’t get discouraged if you encounter a couple of setbacks regarding diseases and bugs (sometimes these can make you throw in the towel). Make friends with your garden shop guy and take bitten or damaged leaves to him. This will help him figure out what’s wrong so your next crop will be even better. Your kitchen garden has so many benefits, from releasing stress to bringing a sense of pride and encouraging bonding with your family and making long-lasting friends in your community. So don’t wait any longer. Get to gardening.

Landscaping is indeed a growing business everywhere. However, it is quite expensive to get yourself a landscaper and purchase what he or she needs. Well, there is great news for you. Yes, you can do it yourself. Online, you can learn how to landscape and now that landscaping has become such a big business finding mulch, decorative stones and all that you need is quite easy. So how do you landscape on a low budget and how do you maintain your work easily? The first thing you need to do is draw a rough plan of your yard. There may be some problem areas so look up how to deal with these problem areas. Maybe you’ll need to cut different levels like steps or dig some drains. Depending on the size of your lawn, you may want to reduce it. How do you reduce your lawn? It is quite easy actually. You can use decorative stone or you can place some clay tiles. This way

you’ll save money on water and fertilizers. If you’re laying decorative stone, you should get landscape cloth to place under the stones so that weeds will not shoot up. Mulch can also be used to suppress weeds. Mulch comes in all different colours and is available at places such as La Vega. Mulch looks great, is low maintenance and can be used in those problem areas. On the topic of stones, creating a rock garden is a beautiful and inexpensive way to landscape. Think about it… at least you won’t have to water the rocks. Building a rock garden is quite easy. You can use any size of rocks and any colour and they look amazing. Online you will find some great pictures and designs for rock gardens. You want your lawn to look amazing but you don’t have the time to maintain it, therefore, you need to choose wisely. Choose things that would cut down your maintenance time. For instance, if you’re creating beds then do
large, sweeping beds rather than small beds. Be sure to choose plants that are easy to maintain and those that insects may stay away from. If you’ve decided to go with lighting then choose wisely. Remember that you need to consider safety, your electricity bill and purchase fixtures that will not put a dent in your budget. Edgings are another way to keep

that much needed mulch in and the lawn out. Edgings are easily available here and are not too expensive. They come in steel, aluminum and plastic. If you have the time you may want to try making your own by using bricks. Landscaping on your own can be challenging but fun. Remember your goal is to keep it simple, low maintenance and beautiful.

Outdoor
KITCHENS Neil Sheppard The Gourmet BBQ Grill Store www.escapeoutdoorspaces.com
More people are remodelling their homes to include an outdoor entertaining space. This means there is a space for gathering (seating area), a space for dining and a place for food preparation. The outdoor kitchen allows for the guests to congregate around the outdoor cooking action and makes it possible for the outdoor chef to be a part of the party. If you are thinking about expanding your outdoor entertaining space to include an Outdoor Kitchen, the following tips will help in getting you started. 1. Location • It is usually a good idea to keep the Outdoor Kitchen close to the house. This is because most of the food preparation is done in the indoor kitchen and you don’t want to have to be walking long distances between the grill and the indoor kitchen if you run out of BBQ sauce. 2. Pay
attention to the Elements
• Consider wind direction when locating
your grill. Most BBQ Grills perform better with the wind direction towards the front of the grill. You also do not want the smoke from your grill to bother your guests or blow constantly into windows or doors of the house. • Since most outdoor cooking occurs during the day, you may want to consider locating the grill under a natural shade tree or under a pergola. Consider the path of the sun and the angles of sunlight that will be hitting the outdoor kitchen area • The best gas grills are made of high quality Stainless Steel (304 grade stainless steel rather than the more common 400 grade). We still recommend a cover to protect from the elements when not in use but a higher quality grill like a Fire Magic, AOG or Napoleon grill will be more resistant to corrosion. If you’re not sure how to determine whether a grill is made out of 304 or 400 stainless steel, take a magnet with you when you go shopping. The magnet will stick to the 400 stainless steel, but not the 304. 3. Building Materials • Since the outdoor kitchen will house a bbq grill that could be reaching temperatures of around 700-900F, it is important
that the island is built with non-combustible materials. Concrete blocks are good for the construction of the structure and a Decorative Concrete, Granite or Tiled countertop of your choice could be used. 4.
Power & Gas
• You will probably need to consider at least one electrical outlet on the outside of the Island. This could be used to run lighting, a rotisserie motor or a blender for cocktails. Remember the outlet will most likely be exposed to the elements so it should be a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupted) outlet. An additional GFCI outlet inside of the island could be used to power an under-counter refrigerator or ice maker • Most outdoor kitchens have bbq grills that are run with propane gas. This could be taken from your house supply or from a dedicated propane cylinder that is stored within the outdoor kitchen island. A regulator is usually installed between the tank and the grill to ensure that the correct pressure is entering the bbq grill. Please Note: The propane tank should not be stored directly under the bbq grill.
5. Size & Spacing • A 30” – 36” Grill is normally enough for most get-togethers. A 36” grill should cook comfortably for 25 – 30 people at a time but it doesn’t make sense having a grill that could cook for 30 people when your backyard can only hold 15 people comfortably. • Many options are available for outdoor kitchens. Grills, Power Burners, Searing Stations, Side Burners, Blenders, Bar Stations, etc, etc. These need to be spaced properly to allow for plates, dishes, pots, drinks and the like. It is normally advisable to leave at least 12” between appliances. • For safety reasons, the bbq grill, side burners, searing stations, etc. should be located at least 18” from combustible surroundings. • If you are thinking about an under-counter refrigerator or ice maker, you should check its height before the start of construction as this may dictate the height of your countertop 6. Storage • The island could be used for storage of your propane cylinder, bbq utensils, plates, glasses, cutlery, towels, and other items. You could organise the storage using the many stainless steel storage units, doors and drawers available. Like the best quality bbq grills, the best quality outdoor kitchen storage door and drawers are constructed with heavy duty 304 stainless steel. 7. Outdoor
Kitchen Standards
• The following are some industry standards to follow: • Food prep counters and bbq grill areas should be 36” – 38” high. Anything above this could be uncomfortable for the chef • Bar serve counters vary from 42” – 46” high. • Counters are normally 30” – 32” deep to accommodate most BBQ Grills • Bar counters should be at least 18” deep. This will accommodate most plates • If you are having bar seating, you should cater for a 24” width per seat. We hope that the above tips help you with the expansion of your outdoor entertaining space to include an Outdoor Kitchen. Functionality & Design are the secret ingredients to a successful layout & kitchen.
design showcase @Home Magazine Sweet & Savoury Kitchen Makeovers
The Kitchen has become the showpiece of the home. No longer is it carefully tucked away in a corner of the house. Modern times have redesigned the way we look at and use the Kitchen in our daily lives. For many of us, the kitchen has become the heart of our homes; a place for family time, homework time, sharing meals, preparing meals and socializing. With all that time being spent in the Kitchen, our Kitchens, more than ever should be a place we truly enjoy being in and most importantly, one that meets our practical and design needs. Any size kitchen can be transformed into the focal point of the home. Functionality & Design are the secret ingredients to a successful layout & kitchen. Here are some important points to consider when planning your Kitchen:
Layout The layout you choose can affect the overall cost of your kitchen. For example, where you place your appliances affects the choice of units and the flow of your countertop. The more breaks in your countertop, the higher
the cost of installation as it calls for more cutting & finishing of edges. Placement of Windows The more windows you incooperate into a kitchen, the less wall space available for cabinetry. This may allow for more natural light in your space but can compromise storage space in your kitchen and call for storing of wares in lower cabinets which may be considered less convenient than wall storage. Choice of Units The units you in-cooperate into your design affects function and the final cost. Having increased drawer units is ergonomically preferable, easing back stress caused by trying to get to low, hard to reach places. Drawer units also maximize the use of space but they are also more costly than standard shelf units. Cabinet Materials Most of today’s cabinets are made of MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard). MDF is available Raw (no coating) or Melamine coated (White/Wood Grain). We do not recommend the use of Raw MDF as it is susceptible to moisture absorption and will affect the durability of the cabinet. Melamine coated MDF however, makes for durable cabinet interiors. The material allows for easy clean up and having a white interior enhances the internal lighting of your cabinets, helping them to always look crisp. Cabinet Fronts We recommend cabinets with a Wood face frame, as screwed in hinges hold more securely to wood than MDF. For similar reasons,

Wood doors are far superior to MDF and thus, are valued higher. The use of Glass Panel Doors (Glazed) is a great alternative to solid wood fronts. Or even better, mix & match! Glass Panel Doors are trending currently as it lightens the overall look of the kitchen. Dark Cabinet hues are popular but can sometimes be overwhelming in smaller space or one with limited natural light. By pairing dark cabinets with frosted or textured glass panel wall units you will now soften the overall look and create contrast. Appliances Appliances play a major role in every kitchen. Keep your appliances in mind when choosing your Cabinet stain colour and countertop hue. For example, pair stainless steel appliances with Dark or Deep Cabinet hues for a modern, opulent look. White Appliances look stellar with White Cabinets for a crisp, seamless look. At Beta Homes, we offer solutions to your ever-changing needs. We believe foremost in function & style. Working within your budget from layout, to cabinet choice, to Timber specification, colour tones, counter-top solutions, shelving accessories, knobs, pulls and other finishings, the works. We offer it all, at Beta Homes, Your Home Improvement Centre.
