The rainy season is upon us and with morning temperatures dropping lower every year, it becomes a task to take a shower. The water is as frigid as ice, so you do your warm up dance and jump in. If only there was some alternative to this routine‌ Bradford White has been providing warm showers for decades and continues to provide innovation and quality with its water heaters. Bradford White is one of the most technologically advanced manufacturers of water heating, space heating, combination heating and water storage products. The company has focused on the engineering and development of an increasing number of energy efficient and eco-friendly water heating products, many of which are Energy Star rated. Now some may think that the benefits of having a water heater is limited to the nice relaxing baths you may have but the reality is that hot water is required for a lot more than that. Doing laundry with hot water eliminates bacteria as well as allowing your detergent to work more effectively to remove stains and odors. Germs and bacteria are major concerns especially if you have a baby in the house. Another benefit of having hot water is that it aids in the daunting task of doing the dishes. Hot water along with some dishwashing liquid helps to lift away and clean dirt from dishes.

This reduces the amount of time you'll have to spend scrubbing and eliminates the need for extra cleaning products. Bradford White offers solutions to any water heating need you may encounter, from residential to commercial applications. The company has been providing heating systems since 1881, making it one of the oldest and most trusted water heating companies in the US. Bradford White also boasts proudly of its ability to provide their customers with a six year warranty on the inner tank as well as two years on the element and thermostat. This further enhances the corporate vision of providing unmatched customer service and satisfaction.

Count on Bradford White for Everything Hot Water In our next issue we will discuss how to choose the right size of water heater for your home, installation and the importance of your warranty.

BTicino offers a wide variety of electrical receptacles, but by far the most common ones in Trinidad and Tobago homes are conventional duplex receptacles. Electrical receptacles, sometimes called outlets or wall plugs, are the connecting element between your home’s electrical system and lamps, appliances, home technology and other electrical devices.

What is a GFCI? A GFCI, or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, is an automatic device that offers personal protection against electrical shock. They are installed in areas where known electrical shock hazards exist such as outlets in swimming pools, kitchens, basements, bathrooms and garages. Wherever there is the potential for contact between a person and an electrical appliance in or near moisture, a BTicino GFCI should be protecting the circuit... and you! BTicino also manufactures tamper proof Hospital Grade receptacles which meet all the requirements of general use receptacles. They also meet additional Hospital Grade requirements which include grounding

reliability, assembly integrity, terminal strength, impact resistance and durability. The next time you see a Ventilator, Dialysis Machine or X-Ray equipment rest assured that chances are they are plugged into, a BTicino Hospital Grade GFCI. Computers and other electronic equipment such as cash registers and computerized equipment in labs can be sensitive to electrical interference. Installations such as these emphasize the need for Isolated Ground GFCI Receptacles, which can be easily identified by the bright orange hue and green triangle. Countless house fires are caused by poor wiring techniques, substandard materials, faulty extension cords or defective electrical appliances. It is very important to have qualified electricians perform installations and repairs at your home rather than attempt to fix these yourself. You can rely on BTicino for superior quality products and their unmatched 20 year warranty on all Wiring Devices.

Important Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Contractor • How much time does the contractor propose to spend on your project each week? • How many other jobs is he or she completing in tandem to yours? • Have you done similar work? • Do you have a process for dealing with change orders? • Does the contractor plan on doing any of the actual labour, or is he or she mainly performing in a supervisory role? • How often will the contractor be on-site, and who'll be supervising during times when he or she isn't there? Vetting a contractor through customers works both ways — word-of-mouth recommendations have long been one of the most reliable means of finding competent contractors. Seek references from neighbours, friends, architects, colleagues and real-estate agents. We will also be happy to provide you with a list of references.

It is possible that in nearly every residential client meeting I have there is a reference to HGTV. I hear “I love HGTV makeovers – can we do that?” or “I want my home to look like those on HGTV” or “I’ve seen them do “this” and I’d like to incorporate “that” from HGTV. HGTV, HGTV, HGTV!!!

Randall Waddell CID, ASID Principal Interior Designer Homework Design Studio

The recent popularity of television makeover programmes, where enthusiastic participants transform rooms in a matter of hours, have only served to promote the idea of interior design as a form of consumption, as immediately gratifying as shopping. Therein lies the problem – instant gratification. We often forget that design is a complicated business. It is not completed in an hour. The planning, budgeting, sourcing and implementation stages consume very many hours and a lot of brain power, many of which are spent on choosing the materials that are used in a space. Materials engage all the senses. You can paint your walls a different colour, but you will not alter the way they physically feel or smell as if you used wood or other elements instead of paint for example. Change a floor covering and a whole range

of ambient factors comes into play. Add a multi-layered lighting plan and that can completely change the mood of the space. These decisions are a few of the many hundreds of details that the designer takes into account when designing and planning for a space but are rarely the focus in detail on the makeover programmes – they simply do not have the air time to demonstrate the volume of factors required for the finished space. So it is not that I have a problem with HGTV and the effect these makeover programmes have on us – definitely not, as I too am possibly the biggest fan! These shows serve to show the homeowner the importance of using a professional and the effect that choice has on a space. I have been lucky enough to have had a few of my local projects featured by HGTV.com and also had the privilege of meeting with Candice Olson of HGTV fame to discuss her line of upholstered furniture, lighting, paint, fabric, rugs, broad case goods, wallpaper, etc. etc! She herself is like a full scale industry, and she is as charming, grounded, witty, funny and intelligent as she is on her TV show. Ms. Olson of all people best illustrates the power of HGTV, as her shows have made her a star of the interior design industry, and obviously one in which the big businesses that serve that industry see the relevance of her name attached to their goods. But in the end it’s because of her design aesthetic that people hire her to do their homes, and not because she has a multitude of stuff with her name on it. All those things need to work in conjunction with one another to make a space beautiful, cohesive and reflective of the homeowner’s personality and vision. It takes the interior designer to know and understand when and how to put it all together for a successful space. So, what has HGTV done to us? It’s a double-edged sword really, as on one side it makes for a more sophisticated client, someone who sees the need for reinvention in their space, and they can see through those TV programmes that there is a way to make it happen. On the flip side however, I perhaps think that people sometimes do believe that it could all be accomplished in an hour and that all the problems are easily solved. The truth is that the real business of interior design is, well, just that – a business - a tough and multifaceted one at that, but also a highly rewarding one. I love seeing the reactions from clients when they see the completed space and I am lucky enough to work with a team of talented, hardworking people who understand the importance each other brings to the success of the project. Interior Design is a joy and it brings joy - I couldn’t ask for a better job than that! Thanks to HGTV for spreading the word!

Sunday Guardian www.guardian.co.tt

Over the years most styles in architecture and design have taken their name from, or have been attributed to, a period in time or the individual who was the most prominent in the field at the time of origin. For example Victorian, Georgian, Edwardian etc are named after the English monarchs of the day, whereas the styles Art Deco and Cubism have their origins generally attributed to Romain de Tirtoff (or Erté from the French pronunciation of his initials R.T.) and Pablo Picasso respectively. One exception to this is a particular style of door called a "Shaker" which actually has its origins in religion. The Shakers were an 18th century break-away Christian group, formerly called the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing (USBCSA) which apart from being a mouthful to say, had its roots in the English Quakers but grew more so in the US when one of the early founders, settled in New York after leaving England. The term ‘shakers’ itself is derived from the method of worship that the breakaway Quakers used, namely ecstatic dancing or “shaking”, which dubbed them as the Shaking Quakers, and later just ‘Shakers’. The philosophy of Shakers was engrained into their daily lives and

greatly influenced their furniture style, and their philosophy is evident in everything they made or built, which can be summed up in two frequently quoted phrases: “whatever is fashioned let it be plain and simple and for the good” and “beauty rests on utility”. As part of their strong religious convictions, the Shaker craftsmen invariably made items for the glory and worship of their god and accordingly they strived to make them to the highest levels of craftsmanship, using only pure and simple lines without any ornamentation. The Shaker Craftsmen were also interested in making their homes and furniture, hardwearing, durable and, above all, practical. The revival of Shaker style of kitchens started back in UK the early 1990s and the modern version of a traditional classic remains

one of the most popular styles to date. The original Shaker furniture was usually made from beech. In the modern age, this has been replaced by more common woods like oak, walnut and maple, and is often stained, painted or lacquered. However, the signature of an understated square panelled door with fairly sharp, well defined edges; no fancy profiles or curves, just simple sophistication, remains. Our focus Kitchen this week utilises this same Shaker style door. Located as the penthouse of a Westmoorings Tower, with panoramic views of Trinidad and its Western Peninsular, the apartment was striking, but the kitchen, originally installed some 20 years ago was dated and tired. Maurice Superville from The Italian Kitchen Company was charged with the task of designer and surgeon, to restore life to the fading heart of this home. The door is made from Walnut which is a warm

dark wood and usually works best with a lot of natural light. This wasn't an issue as the apartment was south facing and had ample uninhibited windows. Either side of the Kitchen was designed with 'banked' cabinets giving ample storage, and the front elevation, a simple run of base cabinets give the feeling of open space. The wall cabinet are fronted with defused glass doors, and although very modern, still retain the shape of the panelled doors. To the centre we added an island, clean, white and understated so as again not to crowd out the room. The gleaming white quartz counter adds to the fresh open feeling whilst a raised table bar hides any clutter on the cook top. I'm not sure what the 18th century Shaking Quakers would have made of our interpretation of their original concept, but i would like to think they would agree that it's definitely a modern classic. @Home Magazine Fabrics & Furnishings

Sunday Guardian www.guardian.co.tt

In our last issue of @Home we explored many different nuances of colour in the article Colour Vocab. We learned that hue is how we identify one colour from the next and that, a shade is a darker version of a hue. A tint is a hue that is mixed with white and on the other hand, if grey is added to a colour, you have the tone of the colour. The value of a colour refers to its relative lightness or darkness and the saturation refers to its purity, vividness or intensity. We were also introduced to the colour wheel. In this issue we look further at colour and discuss the basics of integrating different colours in pleasing combinations: the key to successful colour schemes.

Monochromatic Colour Schemes. A monochromatic scheme may seem the simplest since you are using only one colour. It is not as simple to use successfully. While the monochromatic scheme can be very elegant and sophisticated, it is easy for the room to lack contrast and look ‘matchy matchy’ and boring. It is possible to add some drama by forcing contrast by selecting variations of the colour. Hint: Use a paint strip as a guide. The strip will have your colour and other values of your colour, all of which can be used for monochromatic variety. Another way to increase impact is by mixing textures. Do so by mixing materials, like smooth leather with damask pillows or glossy paint with a textured rug, for instance. For diversity, you can also mix your selected colour with a neutral such as grey, white, cream, ecru or greige and your colour scheme will still be considered to be monochromatic. This is a good strategy for reducing the risk of an overload of your selected colour. So you can paint your walls ecru, for instance, and then layer on varying versions of your selected colour in different textures in your flooring, window treatments or furniture. Or paint your walls and accessorise in your colour, but use neutral colours for your larger pieces of furniture and flooring. Split Complementary Colour Schemes. Select a colour. Find its complement on the colour wheel. Then select the colours on either side of the complementary colour. The colour and the 2 colours from each side of the complement form the split complementary. This combination is easier to manage than the complementary scheme. This scheme is good for amateur decorators. It is very difficult to screw up. There is less risk of the colour scheme being jarring. There is less contrast between the colours and by having to divide between 3 colours (instead of 2) the colours can be more easily balanced. There is still a lot of energy in space as you will be combine warm and cool colours in the mix. You have the opportunity integrate layers of colour in a balanced and dynamic manner. In the example we see the combination of violet, red and yellow-green. Again, unless you want a colourful and very animated space, you will not want to use the colours in equal proportions. Consider using a shade or more muted version of the colour on the walls, with accessories and major furniture pieces being in more intense or saturated versions of the other colours. Or you can use all 3 colours in the shade or tint versions of the colour. Another option would be to paint the main walls in a white with a touch of one colour, with an accent wall in a more saturated version or stronger value of the colour with furniture and accessories using all 3 colours in varying tints, values and saturation. In another example, the soft blue walls are combined with yellow-orange bed linen and stool and red-orange patterned pillows.

Triadic Colour Schemes. Triadic schemes use three colours that are equally spaced from each other on the colour wheel: for example, red, yellow and blue or violet, green and orange or red-orange, yellow-green and blue-violet. To use a triadic colour scheme successfully one colour should be dominant, another should be secondary colour, and the third an accent colour. For Success. Have a plan. Good colour combination seldom happens by accident. The colour schemes suggested here are not exhaustive. But they are more than enough to give you a good start. As a rule of thumb remember the 60:30:10 rule. Use your dominant colour 60 per cent of your room’s surface; for instance, on your walls. Use your secondary colour on 30 per cent of your surfaces. Your upholstery will normally fit this bill. Your accessories can carry your accent colour at the proportion of 10 per cent. Then anchor your scheme, by using something black or a very dark value or shade of one of your colours. This helps to solidify and clarify the other colours. It could be a black pillow, a seat cushion, a box on a shelf, a vase or a small table. Remember that any coordinating neutral can be used with the colour combinations that you select.

Complementary Colour Schemes. If using a 2-colour scheme, using complementary colours is usually successful. Complementary Colours are those which are directly opposite to each other on the colour wheel. The complements are red and green, blue-green and red-orange, blue and orange, blue-violet and yellow orange, yellow and violet, red-violet and yellow-green. This combination of warm and cool colours creates excitement, brings out the richness in the other and adds interest. Opposites attract and are perfect accent colours in a neutral décor. For success when using complementary colours, do not use both colours in equal amounts or intensity. Consider using one colour on your walls and using the complement in the accessories. Of course, you can combine different tints, shades, values and saturations of any of the colours and mix in general mix any versions of the colours. So in the end you can have a colour scheme of many different versions of yellow and purple (violet), for instance. Analogous Colour Schemes. In an analogous scheme the colours are right next to each other, or consecutive, on the colour wheel. For example yellow, yellow-orange, orange or green, blue-green and blue. This is a very pleasing palette. Since the colours very often share an underlying colour the combination works comfortably together. Analogous schemes with greens and blues will create cool, soothing space. Schemes that range between purples and reds are dramatic when values are used and light values will be more relaxing. Schemes based on orange and yellow are sunny and bright and darker versions can be over powering. Use this combination in well-lit spaces. To use this scheme successfully, have enough contrast, vary the proportions of your colours and have some textural interest. In an analogous colour scheme, usually one colour is dominant and the others secondary in importance. Decorators sometime use colours that are near, but not directly adjacent to each other.

The ceiling is now considered such an important element in a space that it is often referred to as the fifth wall in interior design. They are often forgotten and neglected, and all the while they have so much potential. we paint the other four walls with great thought, beautifully making masterpieces out of them. We take our time to pick out colours for the walls to match our textiles, and furniture, even artwork, but won’t give the ceiling a thought. Most of us keep it white and blah. Usually the only thing popping from the ceiling is a chandelier, or a ceiling fan. Well ceilings need love too! Painting or adding a design element to a ceiling can really change a entire space from dull to that wow factor, but the best news is that painting a ceiling is a very budget friendly way to add curb appeal to a space. There are some considerations that need to take place before you paint your ceiling. Decide on the overall result you want to achieve in the room. Do you want the room to feel large, airy, spacious, and tall? Do you want a cozy, intimate feeling where you feel surrounded and safe? Do you want to cre-

ate the illusion of space in a small room, or emphasize the smallness by using a stronger colour? Is the room too big and cavernous so you’re trying to make it more human scaled? However, once you’ve decided to paint the ceiling, Dwayne suggests you use the same colour as the wall but at 1/4 to 1/2 strength. Using the same colour keeps a cohesive feeling in the room yet allows the ceiling to be perceptibly lighter and brighter. If you are considering banishing your boring white ceiling, Beyond Paint (Colour Solutions) suggest a few decorating ideas to give it the attention it deserves. For a harmonious, monochromatic look, use hues in the same colour family for both the ceilings and the walls. Don't be afraid to use the darker colour on the ceiling. This will create a space that is bold and elegant. It's perfectly fine to paint your ceiling with a bold colour, even if the walls are white. In small rooms, many people paint the ceilings white to achieve a sense of spaciousness. However, painting both the walls and ceiling with the same colour will actually make the space appear larger, because

there is less contrast. When using multiple colours perhaps in an entertainment room or kids room it is essential for fostering imagination and creativity. In small spaces, painting the ceiling the same colour as the walls (or one shade lighter) can make the room feel larger. On ceilings with molding, try a neutral colour (such as light beige, ivory or gray) on the ceiling to make your molding really pop and give your space an elegant look. If your walls and furnishings are neutral in colour, consider adding your main colour on your ceiling (a classic colour such as rich plum or red often works well) to draw the eye upward and give your room some vibe. Decals, stencils or even decoupage work well on smooth ceilings and give a room a surprise ingredient that can really add an individual touch to a space, or for a custom look, paint a design on your ceiling to draw the eye upward. Small decorative wood moldings are inexpensive, and with a bit of paint or stain and a touch of hot glue, a ceiling can easily be transformed into the most interesting fea-

ture of a space. You can make your ceiling appear like an expensive, trayed ceiling by painting a soft pinstripe or border around edge of your ceiling. Choose two paint colours similar in tone to achieve this look. As usual with home decorating, there are always exceptions, personal preference and style to consider. Remember to use your imagination in your home.

Colour Solutions Tips: Cool colours tend to recede into space while warm colours often make something appear closer, so consider this when choosing your ceiling paint colours. If you choose your ceiling to be your main colour element in your room, don’t forget to “spread the wealth” by adding throw pillows, vases and other decorative accessories in the same colour.

Hugger Fan - close to ceiling

Sunday Guardian www.guardian.co.tt

One of the most common mistakes people make when purchasing a Ceiling Fan is basing the decision on price and appearance but not considering performance. At Lighthouse we can help you to choose the best Ceiling Fan, at the same time keeping performance, quality and décor in mind. The following are some factors to be aware of: • CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) Airflow • Windspeed • Efficiency • Location (indoor, outdoor etc.) • Ceiling height • Size of room All of these must be taken into consideration before choosing the right Ceiling Fan for your space.

Why do I need a Ceiling Fan? Ceiling Fans help maintain a constant temperature in a room to prevent the Air Condition Unit or Heater from working too hard, which leads to energy savings. A Ceiling Fan uses less electricity than a 100 watt bulb.

What size Ceiling Fan do I need? Ceiling Fan with Light

Choose a Ceiling Fan that fits the scale of the room. For rooms that are smaller (about 11’ x 11’), a 36" or 42" fan can be used. At Lighthouse we have a variety of Ceiling Fan sizes ranging from 30” to 60”.

What height should I install my Ceiling Fan? For optimum air circulation your Ceiling Fan should be installed 9ft above the floor. Depending on the height of your ceiling, we would recommend the appropriate length downrod. Ceiling Fan downrods range from 12” to 72” in length. For very low ceilings you can use Hugger Fans (Ceiling Fans that are close to the ceiling).

UL Listed Ceiling Fans

Ceiling Fan - 30 inches

Outdoor Ceiling Fans are UL listed for either damp or wet locations. Both of these are designed to be exposed to the elements without the risk of electric shock or fire. Damp location Ceiling Fans are not designed to get into contact with water; however wet location Ceiling Fans can handle sprinkles of water from the rain etc. UL listed Ceiling Fans have weather resistant blades made of plastic. The motor housing, paint, screws and other parts of the Ceiling Fan are also made of weather resistant material. Lutron’s innovative products are known worldwide to: Enhance Comfort & Convenience Your home and your workspace should be designed to complement your every need. As your needs change throughout the day, your lighting should adapt as well; bright to read a book, but dim to use the computer. Whether you are at home or at work, Lutron solutions provide convenient access to light control, creating a comfortable atmosphere to support your daily activities.

Provide elements of Comfort Personalize a light control system to recall favorite settings and effortlessly transform the light that surrounds you. Your home’s lighting can be controlled from a handheld remote, wall mounted keypad, tabletop control and now your iPad® or iPhone®. For rooms with ample sunlight, you can integrate a shading solution with electric lighting for total light control. Shades can be preset for different room uses or adjusted for changes in the time of day or season.

Lutron Remote Controlled Shade

Increase energy Savings & Cost Effectiveness When it comes to energy efficiency, there are plenty of options; however, many homeowners overlook a key energy saving opportunity-lighting. This accounts for almost 20% of the average homeowner's monthly electric bill. Lutron light controls can help increase energy savings throughout your home.

All Lutron dimmers save energy. Light sources use less energy when dimmed; these include Incandescent, Halogen, CFLs and LED bulbs. For example, a halogen light source dimmed 35% reduces energy use by 28%. On average, dimming an Incandescent or Halogen light will reduce energy use by about 20%. The more you dim, the more you save. Dimmers operated over longer periods of time at light levels dimmed greater than 20%, save more electricity and money, not to mention reducing the payback period. Lutron dimmers extend bulb life. Dimmers reduce power to the lighting source or bulb, leading to energy savings and longer bulb life. Incandescent and Halogen bulbs last up to 20 times longer when used with a dimmer. Discreet occupancy/vacancy sensors can be installed to ensure lights are turned off when rooms are unoccupied, thus leading to further energy savings. Dimmers and other lighting controls allow individuals to adjust light levels for specific entertainment options, enhance ambience, set a mood and take advantage of daylight. While there are many ways to reduce energy use, most involve sacrificing something; few actually enrich the quality of living and working environments. Karen Mc Lean is a Mixed Media Installation Artist residing in Birmingham United Kingdom. As she looks back at her life’s journey, it seems that her penchant for craft making as a child has come full circle to be her life’s destiny. A former BWIA flight attendant, Mc Lean migrated with her husband to England to fulfill his three year work contract with intentions to pursue a degree in Interior Design and open her own business on her return home. For Mc Lean however, life quickly took another route. “I did not like the Interior Design course offered at the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, plus it was only offered full time and I could not manage such an intense course with an infant to take care of” revealed Mc Lean who at the time had a two year old son. She embarked on a BA (Hons) in Art and Design and excelled, graduating with First Class Honours in 2009 from Birmingham City University. As a Mixed Media Installation Artist, it’s all about the materials used, most of them being unconventional. “They have to visually express what I am trying to convey. I have used wood, metal, screen printing, video, ready mades, and collage from found paper. At the moment I am using blue soap, cross stitch, double sided tape, and packaging,” she said. Every artist has an inspirational viewpoint. For Mc Lean it’s post colonialism. “I am not interested in the colonial condition as a thing of the past, but in the continued ef-

fects that colonialism has on the world today.” The mixed media artist has already done a slew of exhibitions starting from her days at university. She has gone on to be accepted in the Cork Street Open in London and copped the winner’s title in North Worchester Open in 2010. Mc Lean has even exhibited at the Hackney Museum for Independence Exhibition which celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Independence for Trinidad and Tobago as well as Jamaica. “My work is not the mainstream art of the culture, so I signify from the periphery. One of the main characteristics of my work is Primitivism, the rationale that institutionalized slavery. ‘Primitivism’ is used theoretically as a counterpoint to the discourses that continue to support colonial superiority,” said Mc Lean. As a post-colonial artist, like many others, Mc Lean includes colonial history in her work, seeking to alter the discourses of the European West and make them acknowledge their suppressed history.

Love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art.

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

“When we live or work in natural spaces, we feel at peace with ourselves, in unity with nature and at one with ourselves.” This is what the owner of ‘The Timberyard’, located in Chaguanas, had to say when asked about hardwood floors. The owner added “When we live or work in spaces covered with or surrounded by natural timber, the space enlivens our being, maintains in us a feeling of serenity and lends towards a less stressed, more productive atmosphere. The use of hardwood floors, as compared to synthetic floors (laminates, carpets, vinyl) and cold floors (tiles) in living spaces, bedrooms, patios and decks, leaves the individual with a superior experience of well-being, peace and natural living.” ‘The Timberyard’ was established out of a need in the market to access high quality, first grade timber for construction of buildings with timber walls, ceilings, floors, decks, rails and outdoor landscape and activity areas. Disclosing that the demand for hardwood floors (Greenheart in particular) in this country is very high the owner continued on the advantages. He said “As a hardwood, Greenheart creates beautiful floors. The shades of the wood can vary from very dark brown to lighter shades of brown and greenish-brown. This creates multi-toned floors that are very hard and durable, beautiful to look at and wonderful to experience. Since Greenheart is resistant to all regional termites, such floors are considered ‘lifetime’ floors. These floors can be sanded for decades later and still be brought back to their original luster and beauty.” In addition, such floors are easy to clean and once furniture feet are padded to prevent scratching of the floor, hardwood floors are very easy to maintain. This type of wood also has excellent resistance to local and regional conditions. It is considered one of the strongest woods in the American tropics. In general the timber is exceptionally hard, heavy, tough, strong and elastic. As a result, Greenheart timber is a preferred hardwood for most contractors building or renovating along coastal areas, forested areas or any areas requiring high durability timber. This timber is also highly resistant to fires and this makes it one of the safest timbers to use. You’re probably thinking that such a high quality floor must be very expensive right? As the owner explained, “Hardwood floors are more costly up front but are well worth it. While ‘wooden looking’ laminates are about half the price, laminates are not durable, will swell and deteriorate if wet and will need to be replaced a few times over as compared to the lifetime benefit of genuine hardwood floors. Carpets are cheaper but can become moldy and are not a healthy option. Ceramic and porcelain tiles can be attractive and versatile but can be very ‘cold’ in certain spaces such as bedrooms, living rooms, dining areas, studies and patio decks where the feel of natural timber under the feet is a truly special ex-

perience.” A Greenheart floor can be supplied and installed complete with coating for around TT$50.00 per square foot. By now you’re probably convinced that you should get hardwood floors installed in your home. So how exactly should you get started? The first thing you need to do is get the square foot area that needs to be covered. ‘The Timberyard’ will then provide a list of the timber materials needed, provide a cost of materials, recommend a contractor experienced in installing first grade hardwood flooring and arrange delivery of materials to home or office. Floors can be installed directly over plain concrete, tiled areas or timber joists, as long as floors are level. It is not recommended that floors be self installed. So you are an environmentalist to your heart but you simply love the look and feel or hardwood. How do you deal with that conscience of yours? As ‘The Timberyard’ owner insisted, “Once the timber is sourced from a confirmed sustainable forestry source, there is no negative impact on the environment. Hardwood floors are perfect for those interested in natural lifestyles and are ideal for green building principles.” He then pointed out that ‘The Timberyard’ only sources its Greenheart timber from sustainable harvesting sources in Guyana. All floor, ceiling and partition timber is first grade quality, kiln dried and dressed and can be supplied groove and tongued, vjointed, lap-edged or square edged. The Timberyard also supplies 2", 4", 6" and 8" Greenheart timber that can be used for wall structures, posts, trellises, rails, stairways and steps, partitions, bridges, outdoor cabanas, jetties and piers and any other type of construction requiring durable hardwood.” While Greenheart is the best type of wood to use here in Trinidad and Tobago, as the owner said “traditional floors such as teak are still in use. There are engineered hardwood floors but these are not 100% timber. Of all the natural 100% hardwood floors, Greenheart is ranked as one of the most preferred.” For more advice on hardwood floors contact ‘The Timberyard’ via email at timberyard7@gmail.com or via telephone at 309-2221 / 377-2165.

In today's world, the family's needs are changing, so much that your landscaping is constantly evolving to meet those needs. No longer do gardens consist of just planters and lawn; there is need for so much more. Outdoor living is now becoming a trend, planning your landscape with your family activities in mind makes your garden functional. Here are some ideas to take into consideration when planning your landscape:

• How are you going to utilise the space? Take into consideration what activities your family loves, e.g. picnics, bar-b-ques. Do you like to read outdoors? Play sports? Family cook outs? Does your family do more than one of these activities at once? Then your landscape must reflect these functional spaces.

play area, bar-bque or a party space. The possibilities are endless. Utilising this space also puts less pressure on the kitchen, and living/dining areas and if you are creative enough these can be fun.

• Paved area This area can be done in concrete, pitched, pavers, tiles or wooden deck. This is a multifunctional space used as a sitting area, an extended entertainment space, children

• A Peaceful Retreat Pick a spot in your yard that has the ability to be transformed into a peaceful retreat. Create a pathway from your multipurpose area that leads

to this spot. Plant a tree, use shrubs to give you privacy and add a bench or a pond/bird bath. Even a feeding tray for birds would be a welcomed attraction. Make it a place to go read, have your morning coffee, and feed your fishes. It is a perfect spot for the people who desire quiet time in your family. • Outdoor Kitchenette This space has changed my life, I can’t function without it. It’s where we cook most times and entertain. Even do all the dirty stuff, you don’t want to do in the house, like clean fish, roast veggies and man handle dirty pots and pans. This outdoor wonder has protected our indoor kitchen from all the damage associated with those activities.

• Seating Functional outdoor seating is a must. Having adequate seating outdoors means less people indoors. Make sure you choose comfortable seating arrangements that are strong, yet easy to move around. These are just a few suggestions. Every landscape is uniquely designed to fit your personal needs. So list your needs first, add the features you consider necessary for living, then add your planters, lawn and other garden accents to complement your must haves. Always install the functional aspects of your landscape first, and then the rest can be considered for that extra touch.

A swimming pool is an investment, just like a car or a home. You wouldn’t just buy any car on just any lot, would you? The same rules apply. There are many ways to build a swimming pool. Some are made of concrete, others are made of fiberglass, and still others are vinyl. And that’s just the first step. Coping,

cleaning systems, filtering systems, artistic finishing touches are all important elements when designing your pool. The list of variations goes on and on. Getting up to speed will allow you to speak your pool builder’s language and be more confident in the decision-making process. Here’s how:

KNOW HOW YOU WANT TO USE YOUR POOL Stop and think about why you’re installing a swimming pool. Is it for your kids? For entertaining? Is it an investment? Do you want it to make a dramatic architectural statement? Or is a relaxing retreat for you and your spouse? Answering these questions will help tell you what kind of swimming pool you want. A swimming pool for kids might include a slide and a wading area. It probably doesn’t need high-end glass tile finishing or a vanishing edge. But if you want something that is as visually appealing as it is enjoyable to use, you might consider a built-in water feature, more expensive coping, and a negative edge. A client with a clear sense of purpose is a builder’s best friend.

ESTABLISH A BUDGET You probably already know what you’re willing to spend on a new swimming pool, but it’s important to speak with your pool builder to gather more information and get a sense of what your project will cost. Your pool builder will be able to listen to what you want and give you an estimate on what it will cost to make it happen. You may have to adjust your plans, or you may find you have the resources to add to your initial concept. Either way, it’s important that both you and your builder know what your budget is from the start.

CHECK OUT THE EXPERIENCE LEVEL, HISTORY, OR BACKGROUND OF A CONTRACTOR What makes them qualified to build swimming pools? Consider the saying, "If you think the cost of a Professional is expensive, wait until you hire an Amateur."

SAFETY Work done by

Kaufmann Pools and

Swimming pools can be a great place to recreate, exercise, and just enjoy the outdoors. They also come with responsibility..... make sure you protect the ones you care for, and protect the ones that cannot protect themselves.

SHOPPING BASED ON PRICE Usually if a deal seems too good to be true, it is! If you shop for price alone you are destined to be disappointed. Bottom line: you usually get what you pay for.

WORKMEN’S COMPENSATION AND GENERAL LIABILITY INSURANCE? An inexperienced pool builder may have neither of these policies, and put you at risk. A professional pool builder will have both, and protect you from any liabilities. Today’s pools are substantially more sophisticated than they were 15 years ago, and take experience and engineering know-how. They are stunningly beautiful, but can be very expensive and disappointing disasters if built by someone with insufficient experience. Article and images courtesy Kaufmann Pools and Spas

Sweet Ethics in Cadbury Context

Primitive Matters

Primitive Matters Wallpaper

Some of the focal points of her pieces are: Sweet Ethics which questions George Cadbury’s ideological stance as a philanthropist and great chocolate manufacturer. Her research reveals an occluded part of history that shows that he used indentured labourers to develop Ortinola and La Merced in Santa Cruz where the housing and conditions provided for them were less than savoury as compared to the utopian village where his chocolate factory was located.

Post Colonial-Now looks critically into Post War emigration from the Caribbean after the Second World War, the reasons Caribbean people came to England, the hardships they endured and why, this project investigates their continued displacement and the historical as well as contemporary reasons why as the oldest minority in the UK we are still economically displaced. Primitive Matters Wallpaper interrogates ideologies and racism, and in particular the home as the primary space of socialisation where the formations of social and political attitudes become engrained, formations that become rooted, and are handed down from one generation to another. Subtly they are reiterated and repeated, to the point of banality. It is this primary space that political attitudes such as racism become rooted. Primitive Matters Huts looks at the Magnificient Seven and the process of colonization. Homi Bhabba in his book The Location of Culture states that colonization occurs through a process of education, religion, language, and architecture. He highlights how the “coloniser tries to create ‘doubles’ of himself through this process but the undertaking is never fully achieved and the doubles remain forever unfinished, always in a process of formation.” The Magnificient Seven are icons of such attempts. Every dream of an artist would be to live full time off of his or her work. Sadly, this has not come to pass yet. Mc Lean stated “There are many obstacles, one of them being the type of art that I do, as an installation artist I cannot sell my pieces like a painter, for example. I would need to draw the attention of a collector who would be interested in collecting them.” Nonetheless this passionate artist continues to make strides in her art. She received a grant from Arts Council England to do her residency in Trinidad and her work will be featured in a theoretical text Playing at Home: The House in Contemporary Art, written by Professor Gill, which will be launched this summer. For Karen Mc Lean, her art is really about evolution. “There is no script when you become an artist; but I have achieved critical milestones in the three and a half years after leaving university. Presently I feel it is important for me to complete my Masters and engage in activities and experiences that will allow my work to evolve. I am very optimistic and remain passionate about my work!”
