The T&T Police Service has a dedicated department for investigations and recovery of stolen vehicles known as the STOLEN VEHICLES SQUAD (SVS) located in the CID Building on St. Vincent Street, Port of Spain. Most of the vehicles stolen in the country are involved in robberies, kidnappings and illegal auto trade. As a result, recovery of stolen vehicles can assist in solving other linked crimes. According to a source at SVS, there are over 400,000 thousand vehicles in T&T and at least 2,000 units are stolen each year. The most popular models are Nissan and Toyota. Statistics on stolen vehicles from the department reported the Almera
at top spot with 60 units being stolen in the first quarter of 2010. This seems to be due to the black market demand for spare parts where cars are stripped and sold to the highest bidder. Not far behind is the Corolla which (as with Almera) accounts for a large presence on the roads. The source revealed, “These vehicles seem to easily fit in traffic and move to a new location for stripping or storage virtually undetected by thieves. There are other vehicles though such as the Nissan B11, B12, B13, B14, B15 which are commonly reported stolen. Older vehicles such as the Laurel, 626, 323, Charmant, Cressida, Bluebird have been in demand due to a shortage of parts such as fenders, doors, trunks and
bonnets. There are also some garage owners (chop shops) who have been held in connection with stripping of stolen vehicles.” More statistics reveal a recovery rate of 29 percent by the SVS which is rising over the last couple of years. The source revealed that normal duties working in the Police Service to reduce crime, translates to a very risky job that people take for granted. The source said, “We tracked a stolen car from Barrackpore and ended up in Mayaro. The bandits were armed but abandoned the car and fled on foot. Sometimes it can turn “sticky” in a moment’s notice. We have noticed that bandits are using more weapons in the act of stealing recently. This may be due to the fact that many vehicles are using new technology such as immobilizers, coded
• Take your keys. Nearly 20 per cent of all vehicles stolen have the keys in them • Lock your car. Approximately 50 per cent of all vehicles stolen were left unlocked. • Never hide a second set of keys in your car. Extra keys can be easily found. • Park in well lit areas. Over half of all vehicle thefts occur at night. • Park in attended lots. Auto thieves do not like witnesses and prefer unattended lots. • Never leave your car running. Even if you are only gone for a few minutes, vehicles are commonly stolen at convenience stores, gas stations, ATM’s. • Completely close car windows when parking. Don’t make it any easier for the thief to enter your vehicle. • Always use emergency brake when parking. Using this brake system makes your car harder to tow. • If you have a garage, use it. Take time to use your garage as compared to parking outside where the vehicle is more vulnerable. • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Stolen cars/parts are more easily traced when VIN numbers have been etched on car windows and major parts. • Don’t leave valuables in plain view. Don’t make your car a more desirable target and attract thieves by leaving valuables in plain sight. • Use a tracking device. GPS and other tracking systems can help you recover your vehicle faster and disable the engine.
ignitions and alarm systems as the world changes. However, some bandits consider themselves “old school” and still use skeleton keys, knives, pig foot, screw drivers and hammers.” Surprisingly, intelligence from INTERPOL and Japanese law enforcement led to the discovery of a big stolen car racket within the T&T foreign used sector in 2007. Many cars were being shipped to T&T under the guise of false documents and the SVS had to investigate a number of cases. Most of the recovery areas for local stolen vehicles are scattered all over T&T but a main zone is Laventille. Common areas where vehicles are stolen are malls and car parks but you may be followed from your own home by thieves as well. A new trend is the attack on 4x4’s such as the Ford, Toyota and Nissan models. SUVs have also become popular such as Hyundai, Kia and Nissan models. As the Police Service strives to continue the fight against crime, the public can assist the SVS with identification of stolen units when advertised at Mangra Trace, Aranguez or Production Avenue, Sea Lots. Auto security and surveillance systems come in many forms. While most people think of car security as a simple alarm system that is really loud, its important to note that auto security accessories are now available with comprehensive safety features, as well as an assortment of time-saving and beneficial options that will help protect your vehicle in a variety of different ways. In this issue of CarTalk Magazine, reporter Kaelanne Jordan chats with Ryan Orie. Q1. What questions should a first time driver, seeking auto security need to ask the supplier? A. What is the brand of your product? Too often generic products are bought with no real guarantees or warranties. Brand names arise
after years of proving themselves in the security industry. Often times the cutting edge technology is met with efficient warranty services. Brands such as Viper, Clifford, Prestige and K9 are reputable and are sound investments for auto security. Additionally, Insurance Companies provide discounts depending on the quality of your security product. It is helpful to enquire from your Insurance Company (prior to security shopping) to enquire their approved brands. 2. Do you install and if so, how long have you been doing so? Knowing how long your installer has been at his craft provides a measure of comfort in that the odds are if he was inefficient; untrustworthy or unprofessional he would not survive in the industry more than a few years. Further, often times suppliers sell and then refer to an installer. Try to have everything done under one shop to ensure you have a person to hold accountable should there be any problems with your
system. 3. Do you have any insurance references? Insurance Companies are careful as to whom they select to validate customer security systems on their behalf always selecting the most efficient, trustworthy and professional Companies. Ask your supplier are you authorised by any Insurance Company to validate security systems? 4. What features do your security products provide? There are lots of niceties available such as trunk openers; window controllers; one mile paging but the major features one ought to ensure are available are: i. Sensors on glass (to ensure if glass is tampered with the security feature is activated); ii. Sensors on entry points (to ensure if any entry point is tampered with the security feature is activated); iii. 3 point Immobilizer system (to ensure if any entry point is tampered with the security feature ensures that the starter, fuel and engine management circuits are immediately shut down); 5. What warranties do you provide? The minimum on any electronic security system ought to be: i. 1 year warranty on module; ii. 90 days on remotes and siren. 6. What is the Cost? People spend thousands of dollars to purchase their motor vehicles. When selecting any security system a would be purchaser must ask themselves what is the cost of this product in relation to the value of my vehicle? 7. Does the price include installation? Too often people are lured into purchasing a system and learn about the installation costs after the product has been installed! 8. Are there any maintenance costs? These are often minimum but there are often costs to replace batteries or sirens after some time has passed. Q2. What are some of the different safety and security products currently on the market & what are their features and how do
they work? A. For vehicle security there are basically three systems:1.
Immobilizer systems; these won’t let your vehicle’s ignition start unless a key is presented near its sensor–no thrills-no frills–pure basics.
2. Alarm systems: these often have an inbuilt immobilizer systems as well as door sensors; and glass sensors. These are often called “siren” systems. 3. GPS/GSM tracking systems; these are silent alarm systems that allow the user to monitor and track a motor vehicle’s movements discretely and often include features which allow a vehicles ignition system to be shut down from anywhere in the world (as well as listen into the vehicle). Yes, this technology exists! Q3. What is the price range/average cost of auto security products? A. Prices vary with each supplier. Q4. What are the most popularly purchased auto security products that are in demand? A. Hands down the most popular auto security products sold are alarm systems. The most popular brand being Viper. However, with the advent of GPS/GSM tracking systems on the market many consumers are coupling an alarm system with a GPS/GSM tracking system, something we recommend! This is most helpful in both a petty theft (such as simple break in) or a carjacking situation. A motor vehicle can often be the difference between life and death when it comes to getting medical treatment for your loved ones. Securing your motor vehicle should not just be a future consideration but your priority today!

Car Talk is always on the lookout for innovative products that can make the driving experience more spectacular. Whip out your phone, make a call or text, and boom, your car starts. Control your car’s charge level, turn up the air-conditioning (system) or turn it down, lock and unlock, the list goes on. But before you get excited, this is only if you have a smartphone… and a vehicle. In other words, with the Smartphone apps on the market, a driver doesn’t need his keys and does not have to be near to his car to control the vehicle’s functions. Yes, auto technology has outdone itself yet again. Through the SmartStart app, you can start your car from your phone, release your trunk, set off your panic alarm, arm and disarm and even control all your family’s vehicles from one phone. There’s GPS tracking, roadside assistance and you can even locate your car where it’s parked. There are even apps you can download on your smartphone to check your key diagnostic information. Through the OnStar app, you can check your car’s fuel level, oil life and tire pressure. As the information will always be current (thanks to your Smartphone), your mechanic has an up-to-date report on your car’s health whenever you stop by for a check-up. You can also download the OnStar RemoteLink app or the Sync Destinations app and get amazing navigation at your fingertips. You just sync your Smartphone to your dashboard navigator and you’ve got the information you need on your dash display. This is all pretty amazing as it is, but these ‘tech wizzes’, who are determined to make our lives far easier than we ever thought possible, plan to outdo themselves. At the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, French company, Valeo, proposed a remote parking app called Park4U. Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like: your phone will be transformed into your private valet parking system. It will allow you to remote park your car; operate the steering wheel, brakes and acceleration, all from your iPhone5. It’s just up to you now to get with the times and make use of the wonderful technology there is available.
The GPS Tracking Key is a small, pocket-sized device that receives signals from the 24 Department of Defense satellites orbiting the Earth. The internal computer accurately determines the GPS location of the device within 2.5 meters and records detailed travel activities every second. Data logged includes: • Route Traveled • Speed • Direction/Orientation • Active Driving Time • Arrival Addresses • Duration of Stop Data stored on the Tracking Key can be accessed by inserting the unit directly into your
personal computer or laptop via USB port. The information recorded by the Tracking Key can then be: viewed as a written activity/text report; displayed over a digital street map; or – the most popular option - displayed over a satellite image on Google Earth. The GPS Tracking Key is powered by just 2 AAA batteries. Its strong magnetic mounts allow for instant mounting inside, outside and even underneath the vehicle. And because the GPS Tracking Key is also water-resistant, you never have to worry about exposure to the elements. Simply put, the GPS Tracking key is an affordable GPS vehicle tracking device to record driving. Source: www.landseair.com

Today you can secure your vehicle with more than just turning your ignition to lock the course of the front wheel. But it was an evolution over the years – going from one stage to the other to reach the present level. After ignition and door locks came steering wheel locks and pedal locks. It turned out that car thieves found certain tools to make these antitheft devices ineffective. Back in the day, vehicle security meant things such as door and ignition locks. These devices did not prove to be very effective against theft, however, newer security devices were created. Hence the invention of vehicle alarms. When your vehicle was broken into, the alarm would set off a loud screeching sound to alert people to the theft. However with the newer technology it seemed that bandits were also updating their skills. With the right tools a car thief can now disable your alarm system. This led to the creation of immobilizers to save the day, making it difficult
for an ignition to be hotwired as the engine of the vehicle would not start unless the correct key was used. Car thieves sometimes beat this system by performing armed robbery while you were in the vehicle before you had a chance to immobilize it. So GPS tracking systems were introduced. This way you could monitor and track your vehicle. Knowing where your vehicle is means recovering your vehicle. By recognising the times we live in today, where mobile phones are a major part of our lives, manufacturers have produced tracking systems that work with your cell phone where you can send an SMS to your vehicle to shut it down. You can receive reports from your car as well. Panic buttons and silent alarms are also available with these systems. From your mobile phone, you can see your vehicle’s location on Google Earth. The systems also work with local landmark data so it is universal. Vehicle security has indeed come a long way from what it used to be. People still choose to have alarm systems and immobilizers but it’s more of a personal choice than a lack of options.
Many people are not aware of dealing with auto alarm problems. Sometimes it may be simple but when necessary, the professional needs to step in. According to Ryan Orie of REO Consultants in San Juan, alarm problems are common but they can be sometimes solved before spending exorbitant money. Some key factors are:-
and press switch (1-5 presses). Valet viper mode displays the light on steadily. Another remedy is to start the car with switch off, then press valet and let go. Also try opening any door and press combo on - remote lock- -aux- lock. This mode may differ across models.
1. Remote not working
The siren may be malfunctioning or unserviceable. Sometimes improperly carrying out an engine wash without protecting the electrical connections to the siren can cause this. It is advisable to protect all electrical connections when conducting an under-wash or engine wash.
The remote battery may be dead or switches damaged due to wear and tear. Having too much keys on the same keychain with the remote gets it banged up daily and is a common cause of damage.
2. Bypass switch or valet engaged
The valet switch is used to override alarm for parking and servicing. Check the remote to see if the valet mode is on. The remedy code is to turn the ignition on
4. No sound on alarm
In conclusion, alarm problems can sometimes be solved by vehicle owners but if it appears to difficult then call in the professionals.

There are a number of benefits that arise from fitting anti-theft devices to your car. But, did you know that auto security alarm systems often result in substantial savings even when no one ever tries to steal your vehicle? Installing security devices in your car may not only deter thieves from stealing, but they may also reduce your insurance premiums. According to Tateran Ramkhelawan, auto insurance agent at Frank Ramdeen’s Insurance Agency, most companies would offer a special percentage and premium according to your car’s security system. “Most companies offer 10 percent on premiums,” he said. “With the available products on the market such as GPS, Viper, Prestige, immobilizers and even the normal standard alarms are all advantages that the insurer would consider,” Ramkhelawan said. “Typically, security services such as CarSearch increases the amount of percentage that the car owner gets to 15 percent while a normal standard alarm approved by the company gets 10 percent. They must have the full system or the 10 percent applies,” he explained. However, Ramkhelawan says that the savings depends on what the security firms provide. For instance, if you are purchasing a new vehicle through a car company, the manufacturer normally will have an alarm installed or the car owner can install one themselves. “When they do this, they have to inform the insurance company on the alarm or type of alarm and then insurance company will act. If they do not have an ap-
proved alarm, then the deductible goes up. The standard deductible or excess that companies in Trinidad and Tobago apply is 10 percent with an approved anti theft device,” he said. It is important to note that the device needs to be approved by your insurance company to qualify for a discount. So, it would be in your best interest to confirm with them before fitting a device that it is on their approved list. As such, he says that having anti-theft devices, the car owner is eligible to a discount and the deductible on the policy is decreased. Ultimately, he noted that the car owner will have to pay a fee once per year once they have anti-theft devices installed. “After a couple of years, some savings may actually pay for the actual cost of these devices in insurance savings in a short period of time,” he assured.
There are various ways consumers can fall victim to auto insurance fraud, including accident scams, insurer tricks and referral fraud. Whether you're buying auto insurance or on the road, it's important to know how to protect yourself.
When Buying Auto Insurance
• Be wary of insurance offers from door-to-door salespeople, telephone callers or unsolicited Internet advertisements. • Be suspicious if the price of insurance seems much lower than the competition’s. It could be a scam, or the coverage might be full of exclusions that are only discovered when you need the cov-
erage. • Contact your insurance department to make sure the agent and company are licensed. •Check the company's rating. • Make sure “free services" aren't actually hidden in your insurance bill. • Ask if the insurance company has purchased or invested in vehicle repair shops; this is a red flag. You are not required to use them, and they will not give you better service or prices — in fact, they could be worse. • Guard your insurance identification number the same way you would your social security number, because once it's stolen, criminals can use it in a scam.
Many women have juggling roles, from football moms to manager at the office. In some cases, changing of footwear is required. If you are one of these ladies, try keeping your shoes in proper storage. How many times have offered a person to ride and your shoes are embarrassingly thrown all around in your car? Shoeboxes are excellent options for storing your footwear. You can either purchase plastic boxes or bags or recycle your shoe boxes. Imagine if a person accidentally step on your favourite pumps and you are aware of this while driving. Organising items in your car efficiently can also reduce the distraction while driving.
REMOTE ENTRY - Power door locks connected to the alarm system and synchronized to lock with the alarm and unlock when it is disarmed. ENGINE DISABLE - Prevents engine from starting when system is armed. Starter, fuel pump, or ignition may be inhibited. STARTER IMMOBILIZER - Also called starter kill. Starter motor is prevented from operating when alarm is armed. Usually accomplished by cutting off power to the starter. SIREN - Electronic or mechanical sounding device. STATUS - Alarm condition, either armed or disarmed. Status may be confirmed by audible or visual signals. VALET SWITCH - Used to prevent the system from arming when car is transferred to parking valet, mechanic, etc. May be used for programming. SENSOR - Device using various methods to detect tampering with the vehicle, when sensor trips, it sends an output to the alarm brain. TRIGGER - Activation of the alarm system caused by a sensor.

Jaguar Land Rover is internationally known for producing remarkable luxury vehicles. However, their recent exclusive event from 16-18 May 2013, dubbed, FAST DRIVE INTERLAGOS 2013 in Sao Paulo, Brasil brought heightened excitement and anticipation to this exotic region known worldwide for the prestigious Brazilian Grand Prix F1 Championship. Many memorable races have been created here with the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Felipe Massa, Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher. FAST DRIVE INTERLAGOS 2013 offered a rare opportunity for dealers and selected business clients from Latin America and the Caribbean region to experience the joy and passion of driving on this famous Formula One (F1) track. After a long flight lasting about eleven hours through 14-15 May from Trinidad connecting through Panama to Sao Paulo, Brasil, the Caribbean team comprising Interamericana Trading Corporation’s Regional Sales & Marketing Manager - Steve Rapley, Trafalgar Motors’ General Manager Jaguar Land Rover Trinidad & Tobago, Debbie Gormandy and Caribbean Business Entrepreneur, Sheik Mohammed, headed to check in at Sheraton WTC in Sao Paulo. Later, a Jaguar Land Rover dinner party brought some life to the evening at the Badebac restaurant at Sheraton. Many Jaguar Land Rover executives found time to reinforce ties, make new friends and enjoy great food and drinks. The following morning offered a shuttle ride from the hotel to the unrivaled excitement of a special racing experience at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace at Interlagos, with special permission to race a Jaguar/Land Rover vehicle of choice with a professional driver. In addition, an off road driving experience was available with professional drivers/instructors accompanying invitees. The event allowed for a twofold track approach with a test drive, i.e. the selected vehicle could be driven for a first-hand experience with a pro driver as co-pilot or fast drive, i.e. a pro driver would actually drive the occupants of the vehicles at similar speeds near Formula 1 standards. With fifteen vehicles available – ten Land Rovers and five Jaguars, the range of models for the track drive included from Land Rover - Ranger Rover Sport/Vogue/Evoque and Jaguar XJ/XF/XKR. There were many business clients including stock brokers, doctors, lawyers and some officials from various countries eager to embrace this opportunity of a lifetime. The Caribbean team: Interamericana Trading Corporation’s Regional Sales & Marketing Manager, Steve Rapley and Trafalgar Motors’ Jaguar Land Rover Trinidad & Tobago General Manager, Debbie Gormandy joined Caribbean businessman, Sheik Mohammed in the test drive experience which continued throughout the morning period. With the nail biting corners and adrenaline filled straight aways, the track never offered a dull moment for the group and was not for the faint hearted. An international layout of exhibition Jaguar Land Rover booths stole the attention of the crowds whilst away from the track. A stand out would certainly be the “fun zone” inclusive of F1 simulators which had many participants dreaming of a new found racing career. Each booth kept to their corporate identity and seemed distinct in their layout and design. The offroad drive provided a totally unique perspective of Land Rover. With a spectacular course comprising steep hills, mud pits, sharp corners, side bank and wooden bridge; the adventure continued from track to offroad. A main point about Land Rover is

Most notable at the FAST DRIVE INTERLAGOS were Jaguar Land Rover’s executives from various regions. At the media briefing, Sales Operations Director Jaguar Land Rover Latin America and Caribbean region, Ruben Barbosa spoke about JLR’s Global investment of 2.75 billion pounds for 20132014 supporting ambitious growth plans, significant investment in product and facilities, as well as a strong presence in 177 markets globally. According to Barbosa, JLR focuses on product and design encompassing concepts of inner strength, innovation and seductive performance in the models. The new Jaguar F-type represents a return to the essence of the British brand: a convertible two-seater sports, focused on
that the brand is synonymous with offroad dominance in the market. After the drive, the Range Rover seems to be the most capable and comfortable offroad machine. The new Terrain Response system gives the same five settings as the outgoing model: General, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl. The difference with the new generation Terrain Response is that it comes with an automatic setting that uses on-board vehicle sensors to analyze the current road surfaces and conditions, and then automatically selects the most suitable terrain program. Leaving the track brought tears to many onlookers (including me) as it certainly was an historic experience driving some of the top vehicles in the world in an incredible atmosphere with great people. Special thanks to Interamericana Trading Corporation’s Regional Sales & Marketing Manager, Steve Rapley and Trafalgar Motors’ Jaguar Land Rover Trinidad & Tobago General Manager, Debbie Gormandy for coordinating this historic opportunity. Also special thanks to Jaguar Land Rover Latin America Public Relations Manager, Fernando de Moraes and many others from Team Jaguar Land Rover Brasil for their extra special hospitality during the stay in their beautiful country.
Caribbean businessman, Sheik Mohammed was the sole customer from Trinidad & Tobago to embrace the Fast Drive Interlagos 2013 event with the all expenses paid experience courtesy Jaguar Land Rover Trinidad & Tobago. He appeared excited as he boarded his first hand test drive on the famous F1 Interlagos track. At the end of the drive, he appeared elated as he posed for photos with the pro driver and proceeded to get his GoPro footage of his exciting experience. He said, “Brasil is an amazing place. There are nice people here, nice food and a really great atmosphere. I did not believe that this experience would have been so amazing. I went onto the track and it felt so wonderful that Jaguar Land Rover could have arranged for their special customers and dealers to experience this.” The following experiences on the offroad and fast drive both with Range Rovers gave him a new outlook as to the capabilities of the vehicle. He said, “The offroad experience opened my eyes to what this vehicle could do under extreme conditions. The instructors were very helpful as well and the information I got was invaluable. I would like to say special thanks to Ms. Debbie Gormandy at Jaguar Land Rover Trafalgar Motors as she was very instrumental in me being at this event.”
delivering performance, agility and involvement to the driver. The F-Type, and the continuation of the family of the Jaguar sports, with more than 75 years, and that includes some of the vehicles most beautiful, fascinating and compelling history of the automotive industry. Three versions are available: F-TYPE, F-TYPE S and F-Type V8 S. will be driven, respectively, by the new engine Jaguar V6 3.0 Supercharged petrol for 340 and 380 bhp, and the V8 5.0 Supercharged, which develops 495 BHP. The top of the range, F-Type V8 S, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and has a maximum speed of 300 km/h. The F-TYPE S V6 380 BHP accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and reaches 275 km/h, while the values for the F-Type are 5.3 seconds and 260 km/h.

The event offered an unbelievable experience hosted by Jaguar Land Rover. It has been often said that sometimes words get in the way to describe the emotions or passion of unforgettable moments. So here are a couple of photos that captured some great memories of Interlagos 2013.
A stunning new art installation, inspired by Jaguar design and created by Royal College of Art students Ewan Gallimore and Claire Miller, was unveiled to an exclusive audience at the opening of the Clerkenwell Design Week, which runs in London from 21-23 May 2013. The installation was created by RCA students in association with Jaguar's Advanced Design team in Whitley, Coventry, using many of the technologies and facilities employed in the creation of Jaguar concept cars and production designs. Jaguar, which is the primary sponsor of Clerkenwell Design Week, approached both the MA Vehicle Design and MA Textile Design Departments of the Royal College of Art with a brief to create a joint exterior and interior form study which expresses their vision of future Jaguar design language in either a sports or luxury context. Teams comprised of students from both vehicle design and textile design backgrounds were asked to consider the proportions, surfacing, line interactions and aesthetic
beauty when expressing their vision of Jaguar's future design language. In the end, nine different teams each presented their outstanding proposals and after much deliberation on the part of the Jaguar Advanced Design team, the submission of Ewan Gallimore and Claire Miller eventually emerged as the favourite. According to Ewan and Claire, “Jaguar has a long history of ground-breaking design so we knew we needed to create something truly special to catch the eye of Jaguar Advanced Design Director, Julian Thomson. We began the project by looking at light, specifically the way the light falls within the space at Clerkenwell. We thought about how our form could accentuate this light and convey volume through its use of materials and our knowledge of how these materials react with one another." “Our form relates to the Jaguar brand through its sculptural volumes, bespoke materials and visual lightness. These elements helped us to create a sculpture that aimed to display a seamless transition between inte-
rior and exterior space." In addition to pushing their creative boundaries, the students were also able to experience the tight schedules and strict deadlines that are part of working in a global design studio. The students had just two weeks to conceive and present their design proposals and within three days of announcing the winning submission, Ewan and Claire were in the Jaguar Advanced Design studio meeting the design team, and discussing how best to proceed with the development of their installation before handing over to digital modeling in preparation for manufacture. Julian Thomson, Jaguar Advanced Design Director said: “Jaguar enjoys a successful relationship with the Royal College of Art and several Jaguar designers, including myself and Ian Callum, are RCA Alumni." "This has been a fantastic opportunity to once again work with the best car design students in the world and challenge both ourselves and the students with a view on how expressive Jaguar design can become in the future." Excerpts from the First Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety Christine Dalkan
Road fatalities will be the leading cause of death by 2020 unless governments take urgent action. This is the message coming out of the World report on road traffic injury prevention. Sadly, it seems Trinidad and Tobago is determined not to be left behind in this regard. Since 2005, over 1200 lives have been lost on our nation’s roads and as we reach the end of the first half of 2011, we are nearing another hundred mark. As a result of the millions of lives being lost in road carnage across the world, the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) has declared 2011-2020 as the Decade of Action for Road Safety. Arrive Alive has answered, repeatedly calling for proper road safety measures to be adopted locally. This organisation questions what are we going to do to save the lives of the 100 people that are predicted to die in road traffic incidents over the next six months? Firstly, we can heed the UN’s call, which is a mandate for its member countries to implement road safety strategies and policies into road transport planning. However, dangerous driving habits have become as standard as safe driving, and it seems drivers aren’t even aware that they are endan-
gering lives in the process. These dangerous driving habits are everywhere – from highways to residential streets. Brent Batson of Arrive Alive takes the time to pinpoint the top five most common dangerous driving habits of local drivers: 1) Excessive Speeding: Trinbagonians have to wake up to the need to be disciplined, responsible for safe road use. 2) Following too closely: The Regulations state that you have to stay one vehicle length for every ten miles per hour (MPH), which is equivalent to three vehicle lengths at 50 kilometres per hour (KPH) or five vehicle lengths at 80 KPH. Most people have no clue how to match their following distance to their speed. The faster a vehicle goes, the longer it takes to stop. 3) Failure to check mirrors and clear blind spots: Most drivers have their side mirrors incorrectly adjusted, which create large blind spots for the driver on the road. Motorcyclists fit in really small spaces and come up on the road very fast. That’s why you need to check your mirrors regularly.
4) Driving defective vehicles: People don’t do preventive maintenance checks and they are therefore unable to gauge whether to change a tyre or not, Tyre pressure forms part of the vehicle’s suspension which is a crucial part of safe vehicle handling. 5) Driving while distracted: People have this misconception that they are skilful enough to use their phone while driving, brush their teeth, apply makeup and sometimes read the newspapers, when in reality driving requires 100 per cent attention. In order to curb these habits, Batson is calling for increased enforcement and for people to take the initiative to attend defensive driving courses. He stresses the need for pedestrian education and for pedestrians to wake up to the importance of crossing roads safely. Another dangerous habit Batson has observed (this time on the part of the pedestrians) is that they have forgotten the need to wear bright-coloured clothing while crossing at night. He also warns that drivers tend to drive recklessly many times because they are late. This calls for the need for proper time management by drivers. “Leave early, drive safely, arrive alive.”
19-20 November Moscow 2009
Moscow Declaration:… underlining that the reasons for road traffic deaths and injuries and their consequences are known and can be prevented and that these reasons include inappropriate and excessive speeding; drinking and driving; failure to appropriately use seat-belts, child restraints, helmets and other safety equipment; the use of vehicles that are old, poorly maintained or lacking safety features; poorly designed or insufficiently maintained road infrastructure, in particular infrastructure which fails to protect pedestrians; poor or unsafe public transportation systems; lack of or insufficient enforcement of traffic legislation; lack of political awareness and lack of adequate trauma care and rehabilitation. PAUL CLARK MINISTER OF TRANSPORT, UK There is a real cost to national economies from high rates of road accidents. The global economic cost is staggeringly high – somewhere between US$60 – US$100 Billion (dollars). There is no quick fix or single solution – each country has its own particular circumstances and lessons to share with others. An understanding of local conditions and a long-term political commitment to action will be a good start. MORITZ LEUENBERGER MINISTER OF ENVIRONMENT, TRANSPORT, ENERGY AND COMMUNICATIONS, SWITZERLAND We all know very well – the greatest risk is still the human beings themselves. The most important goal is to change the driving behavior of unreasonable drivers. We need strict enforcement of the law. RASHID NURGALIEV MINISTER OF INTERIOR, RUSSIAN FEDERATION Long ago many drivers learnt to drive at the speed of 60–70km per hour, nowadays modern vehicles can speed up to 200–220km per hour and require additional skills for safe driving. It’s clear that the interconnection between a man, a vehicle and road infrastructure is out of harmony due to lack of awareness, training, education and safe behavior of all road users.

Fast & Furious 6 is equal parts Ocean’s movie, Road Runner cartoon, and WWE SmackDown. In other words, it’s more or less the same movie as its predecessor, 2011’s Fast Five—a surprise commercial and critical hit that didn’t so much reinvigorate the Fast & Furious franchise as reinvent it. The series, which began in 2001 with Rob Cohen’s throwback exploitation movie The Fast And The Furious, has dropped any pretense of grit; like Fast Five, Furious 6 is a big, colorful B-movie romp where the laws of physics are routinely ignored. There are long, mayhemheavy setpieces involving armored race cars, tanks, harpoons, and cargo planes. There are logic-defying leaps, as well as leaps in logic. It’s dumb fun—nothing more, nothing less. In the world of the Fast & Furious franchise, any crime can be committed using a car and every problem is solved by adding more cars. As the movie opens, Fast Five antagonist Dwayne Johnson is hunting a team of automotive terrorists led by Luke Evans. Using the logic that one should fight fire with fire—or “wolves with wolves,” as he puts it— he seeks out Vin Diesel, who has retired from car-centric crime to lead a quiet life in the Canary Islands. Johnson piques Diesel’s interest by showing him a picture of one of Evans’ team members—Diesel’s ex-girlfriend, played by Michelle Rodriguez, who has long been presumed dead. After about 30 seconds of soul-searching, Diesel calls his old gang back together; in exchange for full pardons
and a fleet of sweet vintage cars, they’ll help Johnson catch Evans. The large supporting cast—a liability in most action franchises—is one of Furious 6’s assets; the movie emphasizes team action over solo heroics and group banter over one-liners. The potentially dragging Rodriguez subplot is covered in a handful of scenes spread out across the movie, and every member of the gang— Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Ludacris, Gal Gadot—gets roughly equal screen time; as a result, the movie often plays more like an ensemble piece than a Vin Diesel vehicle. Courtesy: www.avclub.com Fans of the “Fast & Furious" franchise — and even Michelle Rodriguez herself — seemed to think her character Letty really bit the dust when she got caught in an explosion during the fourth film. But Rodriguez was surprised to discover that when she went to watch "Fast Five," producers had future plans for Letty. “Vin Diesel decided to keep his word from ‘Fast & Furious 4' when he told me that death is in everybody's imagination," Rodriguez told MTV News ahead of Friday’s “Fast & Furious 6" debut. " He said 'Just watch and see.’ Cut to two years later, I'm in Paris and I go see 'Fast Five' because I want to see Vin Diesel go head-to-head with The Rock like everybody else, and then at the end, I see a tag ending with my picture in it." Rodriguez, meanwhile, admits that she was intimidated by the prospect of battling Carano, who is a bona fide MMA fighter in real life. “On paper, you look at a fight like that and you're like, 'OK, there's absolutely no way that I'm going to get out of this credibly against somebody like Gina Carano,' “Rodriguez confessed.” 'We're going to have to set this up where it's realistic.' So there was a lot of configuring it with the stunt guys to have my own street style compared to her tactical style. It was kind of like fight or flight, survival versus tactical combat." “Fast & Furious 6" opens in theaters nationwide in June. Courtesy –www.mtv.com
Have you ever wanted to become a DJ? Or at least mix tracks like one? Well how about being able to do that with the touch of one button… better yet right in your own car! Car music decks have come a long way from your basic equalizer and digital tuning. Pioneer has introduced several affordable single CD car decks for 2012 which feature App Mode (iPhone / iPod) and USB connectivity, while certain models offer proprietary MIXTRAX EZ, built-in Bluetooth connectivity, HD Radio Technology and a full dot LCD display. MIXTRAX EZ technology is a new innovative approach to raising the level of car audio. It allows you to easily and quickly enjoy a mix of your music library in a style similar to a live DJ. The technology called MIXTRAX EZ provides three types of DJ-style transitions (Flanger, Echo and Crossfade) and six sound effects (Backspin 1 and 2, Echo, Trans, Roll and Scratch) that are automatically added between songs for a nonstop, continuous listening experience. To further enhance the “dance club in your car" atmosphere, the illumination buttons and display of the two in-car CD receivers pulsate and change color with the beat of the music. Two modes of illumination (defeatable), each with six colour patterns, create different light effects to give users a cool and fun experience. According to Ryan Orie of REO Auto, “Music has a unique ability to affect our moods, our feelings, and even our energy levels. So if the public is interested on learning more about these new audio systems they can feel free to check the website, www.reoautott.com.” Available on all new 2012 models, Pioneer's App Mode lets users listen to their favorite music and streaming music apps from a USB connected iPhone or iPod touch. The feature allows passengers to separately control, browse and select apps directly from the iPhone or iPod touch while audio playback is performed by the Pioneer receiver. Bluetooth connectivity provides a wireless communication and data connection to Bluetooth enabled devices. The bluetooth profiles include the Hands-Free Profile (HFP) for wireless calling and receiving and Simple Secure Pairing (SSP), which allows the user to pair compatible devices without the need to input PIN codes which simplifies the pairing process. Basically, for those with bluetooth ready cell phones, this feature allow you to talk hands free, which is now required by law for all of us while driving in sweet T&T. When a call comes in, your music CD is automatically paused and your radio automatically routes the call through your speakers without having to switch to another band or frequency. Certain models are integrated with an HD Radio tuner, embracing the growing trend of high quality audio broadcasts and provide that clear digital connection to HD Radio broadcasts from radio stations around the country. In addition to crystal clear reception, artist and song title information is shown on the display of the receivers (when available from the radio channel). Each new model in the line-up now includes USB connectivity with dual ports available on the flagship model DEH-P9400BH. The USB connection enables consumers to connect their musicfilled flash drive, hard drive and/or smart phones. The music decks are then able to read the music on these devices and play them through your car’s music system.

Charlotte, NC. T&T`s Rishi Kanick said a prayer as he attended the special Sunday church service for all racers of the National Hot Rod Association`s (NHRA) Dollar General Four Wide Nationals at Zmax Dragway, North Carolina which formed part of the final day of weekend action from 19-21 April 2013. Reaching the NHRA`s final against five time World champion Top Alcohol Dragster, Bill Reichert, was literally that prayer being answered for Kanick. Retracing the weekend, the fairytale journey to the final was no easy path. Beginning on Friday, Kanick was sitting on top of the qualifiers earlier in the morning for Top Alcohol Dragster bracket with a personal best elasped time (ET) of 5.42 seconds @253 miles per hour on the quarter on April 19, 2013. That was until Jim Whiteley came and put down a ET 5.29 seconds @271 miles per hour run to take the lead. Later, Kanick would have another qualifying run and clocked ET 5.89 seconds @247 miles per hour with engine complications after a cylinder dropped. Stormy conditions with heavy winds and rain forced the day to an early halt but Kanick still qualified with the seventh fastest overall time heading into the final 16 running Saturday. He said, " It`s my first season running a nitromethane car so I am still learning a lot as I go along. I have to say thanks to my family, friends and Anthony Dicero Racing." Kanick went even faster during further qualifying stages on April 20, 2013, with an Elasped time of 5.26 seconds @274 miles per hour in his Top Alcohol Dragster and sent the crowd into bewilderment as this is his first year in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). Top Fuel drivers, Sidney Frigo, Spencer Massy and current World Champion-Top Alcohol Dragster, Jim Whiteley congratulated Kanick on his achievement. His crew chief, Anthony Dicero was also proud of Kanick`s 5.26 sec pass but was more pleased with an ET 5.33 seconds @267 miles per hour later in the evening which secured the team into the quarterfinals. Local motorsport veteran, Hollister Edwards was on location with Kanick and provided support heading into the quarterfinals. This was the first for anyone flying the national flag at this level of racing – Top Alcohol Dragster which is a bracket below Top Fuel. Saturday`s action was full of excitement for race fans as four Top Fuel cars followed by four Jet Dragsters ran simultaneously on the biggest four track facility in the world. Quarterfinal action continued on Sunday morning with a special church service, track walk and presentation of racers. Kanick ran an Elasped time of 5.33 seconds @ 267 miles per hour to dispose of John Finke and head into the semi-finals. He maintained an Elasped time of 5.33 seconds beating out M. Thacker and created Caribbean history as the first racer from the region to qualify for a Top Alcohol Dragster Final in NHRA. With his prayer answered, at the line in the highly touted final against Reichert, nerves got the better of Kanick and he left before the tree. Although he lost the race, the lasting impression of Kanick in his debut season had earned the respect of many fellow racers and crews who came across to the T&T camp to congratulate the team.
