The SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) show is regarded as the world’s premier automotive specialty products event. The show provides attendees with educational seminars, product demonstrations, networking opportunities and more. Each year, the show draws visitors and exhibitors from around the world. Attendance is open exclusively to members of the industry. This event attracts nearly 100,000 people from more than 100 countries every year.
The lone T&T representative at Car Crazy’s booth, Jeremy’s Gayadeen’s Range Rover Sport, turned a couple of heads at SEMA 2012. However it was a long journey for the local vehicle and its team (mentally and physically) from the shores of the Caribbean island of T&T to the bright lights of Las Vegas, and ultimately the globally acclaimed – SEMA SHOW. The journey started a couple years ago for Jeremy in bringing the Ranger Rover together. When Jeremy heard of the Meguiar’s Car Crazy show in Centre of Ex-

cellence earlier this year, he was elated that his Range project had a strong shot at winning the exclusive trip to SEMA 2012. It was a combination of long days and nights to get the right paint scheme and aftermarket body kits and accessories for the Range. Even the black 24 inch Ashanti Rims were special selected to compliment the burnt orange look with custom interior. After a local team of judges inspected the vehicle at the Car Crazy show in T&T, Jeremy was given the nod for first place and snatched the exclusive spot to exhibit the vehicle at the Meguiar’s Car Crazy booth at

SEMA 2012. The local competition was very keen but Jeremy felt that the team’s hard work was rewarded. SEMA had a variety of vehicles from across the globe and it was refreshing seeing a T&T vehicle among the lineup. T&T is very passionate about carshows and the Caribbean flavoured Range Rover Sport attracted many onlookers including the popular television series Car Crazy host, Barry Meguiar. Meguiar’s Car Crazy booth also featured special winning vehicles from other regions such as England, Central America and South America.

Ken shows his legendary skills at SEMA 2012
Ken Block (born November 21, 1967, in Long Beach, California) is a professional rally driver with the Monster World Rally Team. Block is also one of the co-founders and recently appointed Chief Brand Officer of DC Shoes. Block has also competed in many action sports events including skateboarding, snowboarding, and motocross. Ken is no ordinary guy as he is the first American to compete in the World Rally Championship (WRC) and has several millions of fans following his viral Gymkhana motorsport videos on youtube. (Warning: the video may excite you… just watch, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuDN2bCIyus). His demos at FORD Out Front special event at SEMA 2012 alongside World Drift Champion, Vaughn Gittin Jr. were well received. He shared an exclusive interview with CarTalkTT:-
also get to come out here and be able to throw it around and enjoy myself. RG: What advice do you have for young people wanting to get into motorsport especially drifting or rally like yourself? KB: I started in rally and there are really a lot of good rally schools out there that can help teach you to drive on loose surfaces and control the car when sliding. I think that is the easiest way for someone to do instead of trying to go out and figure it out yourself because you can make a lot of mistakes. You can really go to a good school like here in America, Dirt Fish and Team ONeil are very good rally schools. That’s my best advice. PHOTOS: Narend Sooknarine – ZORCE MAGAZINE

RG: Ken Block what are doing out in SEMA? KB: I have been out here since Monday because we actually had a global rallycross race here for Monday and Tuesday. That’s finished so I’m actually doing some demos for FORD with Vaughn Gittin Jr and I have a bunch of autograph signings for people like GoPro, Pirelli and Shining Monkey… a bunch of my great sponsors. SEMA is a lot of fun out here and seeing all the fans and being able to come out here and play. RG: How was it breaking barriers doing WRC as the first American? KB: I have always liked rally since I was a very little kid so for me being able to race in WRC was an absolute dream come through. It is racing at the absolute highest level of the sport so I know if I had to push my skills somewhere to the top I had to go there to race. I have struggled a bit, crashed a few times but being able to finish in the top ten in a couple of races I’m quite happy. RG: Millions of views on youtube with the popular Gymkhana series, tell us when is the next one coming out? KB: I get that question a lot but when I grew up watching rally it was the groupie days of the 80’s and 90’s and watching cars sliding around on the tarmac was just the biggest inspiration for me. Especially someone like Colin McRae, so for me nowadays when we get around in the rally car we have to drive so smooth, clean and straight and that is what is quick. Gymkhana is for me, the fun time when I get in the car and get to throw it around in a fun way. I’m very lucky though that I get to do the racing side very clean, very straight and have fun doing that and compete. However, I

Las Vegas is known more for slot machines and casinos. However, the SEMA SHOW could best be described as a Disneyland paradise for car lovers. The 2012 edition gave many highlights of top notch custom built, vintage restored, new cars, trucks, SUV’s, 4x4’s, motorsport, automotive tools, parts, paints and basically everything else you could have imagined. In the end SEMA 2012 left one common memory of maintaining top spot for the global automotive industry. With over 100,000 exhibitors and huge crowds trekking the Las Vegas Convention daily from 31/10/12 -02/11/12, the event remains an iconic calendar mainstay for auto industry leaders. The winners of the Hottest Car, 4x4, Truck and Sports Compact were announced early. The Ford Mustang was named Hottest Car, the Scion FR-S took the Hottest Sport Compact honors, the Ford F-Series won Hottest Truck and the Jeep Wrangler received the Hottest 4x4-SUV award. "The SEMA Show has always been about innovative products and trends," said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO. “The SEMA Award amplifies the industry's special ability to identify and set trends that consumers follow." The SEMA Award recognises vehicle models that specialty-equipment manufacturers believe are the best platforms for accessorisation and that showcase the year's coolest products. It also underscores the cooperative relationship be-
tween the automakers and SEMA-member companies. “The SEMA Award helps guide consumers toward the hottest-trending and most accessory friendly vehicles on the market," added Kersting. “Our SEMA Show exhibitors are industry visionaries who determine the winners of the SEMA Award based on the vehicles they showcase in their booths. Each booth vehicle represents a ‘vote' and the most prominent models in each category are the winners." The 2012 SEMA Show features more than 2,000 exhibiting companies that manufacture thousands of products designed to improve performance, safety and convenience, as well as those that enhance appearance and comfort. While products are available for every make and model, exhibitors are investing more in the Ford Mustang, Scion FR-S, Ford F-Series, and Jeep Wrangler than any other vehicles. Consumers, therefore, can expect to find great specialty products for accessorising these vehicles.

Racetrac, formerly Andy’s Wheels, located on the Eastern Main Road in Arouca is committed to adding a new dimension to the tyre and rim sector in T&T. A revamped display is being developed to international standards that would encompass wheel products from various markets such as motorsport, daily drivers, car customizing enthusiasts and special-fit custom orders. The Sailun Atrezzo brand is capturing a lot of attention because of its strong performance in the last couple of years. While Sailun Atrezzo is available in various sizes from 14-24 inches, it is also the only tyre with the most amount of sizes available in any brand with specifications such as Touring, ZS+, Z4+AS, Terramax H/T-SUV and commercial variants. After getting their proverbial feet wet in the World Rally Championship level just a couple of days ago with Rally de Espana 2012, John Powell and co-driver Mike Fennell may have to actually drive in ice come next year at WRC Rally Sweden with FORD M-Sport. According to T&T’s Powell, you may have to mark February 7-10, 2013 on the calendar as he heads to Sweden with FORD M-Sport. Powell added, “I believe this is a Caribbean thing, whether you are from Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago or elsewhere. I want to thank everybody, I didn’t get here alone… I never believed for a moment that I got here by myself. It is with good, consistent support from the spectators, my fans, my family, the media, my sponsors, Trinidad’s rally club and marshals that we are here. This is why the decision I had to make was very difficult. However, we are happy to secure a deal with FORD M-Sport to do a few of the championship rounds next year.” The decision by Powell to withdraw from further stages in the competition due to a medical problem was based on the team’s doctor recommendations. Apparently, an inner ear infection had been putting the Caribbean rally icon under physical stress across the long stages and there was the issue of safety first and foremost. Jamaica’s Mike Fennell also agreed with Powell’s decision to withdraw. He said, “WRC has been treating us good but there was the issue of health and safety at all times.
