Basic Curriculum Building a Foundation in Martial Arts
Rev 1.0 - Š KarateBuilt L.L.C.
Welcome to Martial Arts Training!
The Basic Curriculum has been developed to help students learn basic skills and find out if martial arts training and becoming a Black Belt is something that they can accomplish. Our goals are that the students are able to understand basic martial arts concepts, the instructors will be able to spend individual time with each student, and be able to focus on improving the student’s physical conditioning.
About The Editors / Authors:

Welcome to Martial Arts Training!
The Basic Curriculum has been developed to help students learn basic skills and find out if martial arts training and becoming a Black Belt is something that they can accomplish. Within the first 2 weeks of training, every student is evaluated at a progress check (with their parents if they are kids). You may be ready at this point for the advanced training of Master Club or Leadership Training. In the Basic program We start with a foundation in Martial Arts Basics, Sparring Drills and Board Breaking. After 6 months, the students begin basic sparring with safety equipment. The focus of the Basic class is to improve physical conditioning and prepare the student with the technical skills for the more advanced forms and material in the Master Club and Leadership Classes. The Basic class is based on a rotation system. Each 2 month Graduation cycle, we will focus on one curriculum rotation which determines what material the student will learn. Our goals are that the students are able to memorize the material, the instructors will be able to spend one-on-one time with each student, and be able to focus on improving the student's physical conditioning. 1

“The Karate for Kids Program has something for every member of the family. My oldest has been training for 6 years and is developing real leadership skills. His younger brother and sister are learning how to listen, pay attention and follow directions!
Barrie and Mike Petty
Basic Curriculum The Next Steps... The next few weeks are going to be a fun and new challenge for you. The Basic Curriculum is an introductory program to get you started in martial arts. This gives you a little time to see what we have to offer and we can make a recommendation for your future training. Over the next few weeks you are going through a process that we use to determine the next step for you...

A Message from Master Moody!
Welcome! You have taken your first step to building a successful life. That's a big claim... and over the next few days you will see how I can make that claim! Our instructors are watching you during class and we are looking for who we will invite to train to Black Belt in our Master Club or Leadership Training classes.
It’s not easy to be accepted into Leadership Training. Our instructional staff reviews student’s attitude, their attendance, and their family support. If you quaIify, you will develop the skills to be successful in anything you wish to do - a big claim... and we back it up. In this book are a small sample of students, and families just like you. People who want the best for themselves and their kids - people like you - who are willing to make the extra effort to work with us to help develop confident people with self-discipline and a high level of physical fitness. While our staff is always available to answer your questions, I encourage you to take the time to listen to the other families - read what THEY say about making themselves, their kids and their families the best they can be... Sincerely, Master Greg Moody 6° Black Belt Rev 4.0 - © KarateBuilt L.L.C.

Step 1... Your First Class What to Expect:
Some helpful hints are below. Please don't worry about memorizing all of this, our instructors will take you through everything so it will be a fantastic first class! • Make sure you arrive a couple minutes early. That way you get to ask any questions and get your tracking card. On your first regular class, you will need to check in at the front counter. • The Tracking Card. The student tracking card is how we check your attendance. We also use it to give you notices - for example when you buy something at our Pro-Shop and it comes in, we will keep your card at the front counter - if it's gone, then you know you have a message so check in with us. • Keep The Card! The Tracking Card goes in your uniform till the instructor calls for "Cards!" in class. • Your Belt and Uniform. You probably went over how to tie your belt and uniform at your introductory lesson. If you have any questions, the instructors will be happy to help. Some notes: • Uniform: Tie the right side to the inside of the left, then tie the left over the right. • Belt: Tie the right over the left and then the left over the right. This creates a "square knot". • The Student Oath. Your student oath is on some of the following pages. Again, don't worry about memorizing this - in the Basic class you just repeat after the instructor.
We guarantee you will have an outstanding first class!!

“The values we stress at home are reinforced at Karate. Karate has helped Danielle appreciate that hard work yields excellent results. Danielle has a deeper understanding of self-control, honor, dignity and self-discipline. She has great self-confidence, knowing she can accomplish anything she sets her sights on!
LauraLee Gaudio, Mother of Danielle
Step 2... Progress Check Don't Miss It!
We do a Progress Check with every student in the Academy on a regular basis. This is how we provide incredible results for our members. Your first progress check (usually after two weeks with us) is the most important! There are three things to consider for your goals in martial arts at your progress check. First: where you were before you started classes. Second: what progress you have made since you got started. Last: what we can help you accomplish in the future. Notes:
• For Kids: Make Sure ALL Involved Family Members Attend. For children, both parents must attend - it's just as important as a parent teacher conference (in fact it is one). If only one parent attends the one that missed it won't understand how to work and practice with their child to get great results. Please make every effort for both parents to attend. • We understand there are some circumstances where only one parent is available. There are two options:
• We can conference call the second parent. This often works very well as they can ask whatever questions they like.
• The parent that attends must be able to make all the decisions for their children. Make sure you discuss their progress at home prior to the Progress Check.
• Please Don't Miss This Appointment. Our instructors work full time at being professional martial artists. Their time is very valuable - please respect it as we do your time.
Your Progress Check will help our instructors develop you into a Black Belt someday!! 7

“My whole family has grown and strengthened through our practice of Taekwondo. I use the life skills all the time with my kids. They are a great reminder of our family’s own values!”
Beth Grula, Mother of Adam & Meredith
Step 3... Invitation When We Determine...
That you are making good progress, have a great attitude and family support, then we will invite you to participate in Black Belt Training. There are two options: Master Club Training. This is the first level you can train to Black Belt. It develops the knowledge of martial arts and skills to become self-motivated, or disciplined which is the start of becoming successful in life, Leadership Training. The highest and best level of training is our Leadership Training. This is designed to give you all of the Master Club Training plus the skills to be a leader, here, at home and at work or school. Students who participate in Leadership Training develop speaking skills and unparalleled confidence.
Ask your instructor about which training option you are ready for. Leadership Training is not for everyone - our staff will evaluate you carefully before you are invited to one of our Black Belt Training programs. 9

“Our children have been involved with Karate for Kids for several years now. Their martial arts experiences have influenced every area of their lives from academic achievement to social skills, physical fitness and self-esteem. We consider it a privilege to be part of the ATA family.
Cindi and Clark Mitchell
Step 4... Conference Follow Up...
Our instructors keep working with you and your family to set goals, suggest training, and make sure you are making great progress towards Black Belt and beyond. The next pages contain all the basic material to get you started! We are always available to help you get the most out of your training. There are many opportunities in martial arts including:
• Clinics. Clinics are a great way to learn new things and have fun. We often bring in special instructors and have amazing topics like weapons, pressure point control tactics, personal safety, and even personal development. • Tournaments. There are 4 levels of tournaments. When you are in Leadership Training, you will be able to collect points towards state and world championships! • Inter-school Tournaments (Class "C"). These are the smallest level and you can compete even at the Basic level. • Regional Tournaments (Class "B" or "A"): These are usually at the state level. Any school can participate. You need to be in a Black Belt Training program to participate. We offer special Competition Classes to prepare you! • National Tournaments (Class "AA"): There are two to three national tournaments each year. • World Championships (Class "AAA"): Held each year in Little Rock Arkansas in June, this is the begining and the end of the tournament "season". The competitors who have gathered the most "points" compete for world champion in sparring, forms, weapons, ATA extreme, team competition and more in child and adult divisions. This is the world's largest martial arts tournament. • Teams. We have many teams in the Academy: Some of them include... • Competition Team: The competition team trains for tournaments. If you want to compete or work towards state or world champion, you need to be on this team! • Demo Team: The demo team performs amazing team demonstrations. • Leadership Team: All members of the Leadership program are eligible to be part of the leadership team. You will help in classes and practice being a leader. • Elite Instruction. Ask an instructor how you can learn to be one of us!

To put it mildly... he was incredible! He was able to manage the class extremely well. All the kids were standing at attention and listening - even the difficult one... amazing! Parent Tips Understanding Your Child...
Parents, here are some tips on how to work with your child both at Karate, at home and at school.
Kids Think of NOW - If you ask a child if they want $10 now or $50 next week, they will take the NOW. When you don’t reward him now, he will find something else to do that isn’t beneficial like video games, or watching TV or another activity that is just a ‘game’. When they like something that’s beneficial (like school or Karate), you have to ‘lock it in’.
Habits - There are 2 kind of habits: good ones and bad ones. Good habits take work and time, repetition and discipline - Good Habits are always “forced.” Bad habits take no work and little time. They are easy to develop. As parents, we have the responsibility to help our kids “force” themselves into good habits - the alternative is they will certainly develop bad ones. Be Consistent - If your child knows when he or she needs to get ready it will help them stay on track to Karate, school and anything else they do. Taking a “break” from a beneficial activity is one of the worst things a parent can let a child do... As adults what happens when we take a “break” from exercise? or our diet? We usually don’t go back until it’s too late and then we have to start over. Our kids don’t have the chance to start over - once they learn to quit, they will learn it forever. As soon as they aren’t coming here, they will find things that aren’t as beneficial to them.
Commitment - Commitment is the foundation to all success in life - nothing great ever happened without commitment! Achieving a Black Belt requires a commitment of not just the child but the family. Because kids think of NOW and not the FUTURE - it’s our job as Parents to help them through times they want to give up. People (not just kids) want to quit just when they are about to accomplish something good! Just when they are going to forge their tenacity and perseverance to one day become a great success. Kids want to quit for one of three reasons - because they are afraid of something, because they think it’s too hard, or because they have been allowed to quit things in the past. We will support your child thought these times parents... you need to make the commitment to support your child too! Manage Transitions - Kids don’t like transitions between activities - if your child is in the middle of a video game and you interrupt it to get their Karate uniform on you’ll have a hard time. Setup their day by planning ahead - have them alternate fun stuff with chores or homework. 17

Karate for Kids Star System CONGRATULATIONS! You have officially entered the Karate for Kids program. The following is important information that you will need to know to make your enrollment a great success. In the coming week you will be receiving your official Karate for Kids V Patch. Aside from the patch’s use as a school symbol, the patch is also part of the reward and promotion system. The “V” symbolizes the personal victories the children can achieve on a day-to-day basis, relating to the eight building blocks of our program. These victories are rewarded with gold, blue, and red stars that are sewn or glued directly on the “V” portion of the patch. Applying Stars and the V-Patch: The best way to do this is to attach the V-Patch with Velcro onto the uniform, and glue the Stars on with fabric glue. This is great because when your child gets 25 stars, they will be awarded the SILVER V-Patch, with 25 more (total of 50) they receive the GOLD V-patch and with 50 more (100 total) they receive the SUPER Patch! A system of rewards was developed to help reinforce the theme weeks and to support the motto “Every kid is a winner”. The stars will be awarded at the end of each class. The kids receive stars for the following deeds. GOLD STARS - Excelling at school. Every excellent report card and improved report cards receive a gold star. Collect 5 papers from school that are “A” papers or that show significant improvement and receive a gold star. RED STARS - Tournament participation or doing a public demonstration. This includes any extracurricular special activity such as a piano recital, track and field day, presentation in front of their class, etc. BLUE STARS - Demonstrate the daily class theme or have a great Taekwondo attitude in class. Students Collect Karate for Kids papers in class and can exchange 5 for a Blue Star! Theme related activities sent home for homework and returned completed earn a blue star (ex. Taekwondo report card).
KARATE FOR KIDS LIFE SKILLS Vision Communication Respect
Self-Esteem Discipline Honesty
The Karate for Kids program will assist your child in developing the skills necessary to be successful in life. By learning and incorporating these philosophies into everyday life, your child will improve at home, in school, and with friends. Remember.......
A student may train for a long, long time, but if they merely move thier hands and feet and jump up and down, learning Taekwondo is not very different from learning to dance or play other sports. The student will not have reached the heart of the matter; they will have failed to grasp the essence of Taekwondo. The Karate for Kids program goes further; it trains the student both mentally and physically. Rev 4.0 - © KarateBuilt L.L.C.

Tiny Tigers Star System CONGRATULATIONS! You have officially entered the Karate for Kids TINY TIGERS program. The following is important information that you will need to know to make your enrollment a great success. In the coming week you will be receiving your official Tiny Tigers V Patch. Students Collect Tiny Tigers papers in class and can exchange 5 for a Blue Star! Theme related activities sent home for homework and returned completed earn a blue star (ex. Taekwondo report card).
TINY TIGERS LIFE SKILLS Vision Communication Respect
Self-Esteem Discipline Honesty
The Karate for Kids Tiny Tigers program will assist your child in developing the skills necessary to be successful in life.

White to Yellow Belt: Special Rank Information
Each rank has a special meaning. As we learn our new material, the belt we wear represents progress toward Black Belt, but it also symbolizes our growth as people. Here is a list of the special meanings of each belt: Color Meaning / Philosophy White "Pure and without the knowledge of Songham Taekwondo. As with the Pine Tree, the seed must now be planted and nourished to develop strong roots." The student has no knowledge of Songahm Taekwondo and begins with a clean (pure) slate." Orange "The sun is beginning to rise. As with the morning's dawn, only the beauty of the sunrise is seen rather than the immense power." The beginner student sees the beauty of the art of Taekwondo but has not yet experienced the power of the technique" Yellow "The seed is beginning to see the sunlight." The student begins to understand the basics of Taekwondo.

Camo to Purple Belt: Special Rank Information
Each rank has a special meaning. As we learn our new material, the belt we wear represents progress toward Black Belt, but it also symbolizes our growth as people. Here is a list of the special meanings of each belt: Color Meaning / Philosophy Camo "The sapling is hidden amongst the taller pines and must fight its way upwards." The student begins to realize his/her place in the world's largest martial art. The student must now begin to spar in order to be promoted in rank. Green "The pine tree is beginning to develop and grow in strength." The student's technique is developing power. The components of the basic techniques are beginning to work in unison.
Purple "Coming to the mountain. The tree is in mid-growth and now the path becomes steep." The student has crossed over into a higher level of Songahm Taekwondo. The techniques, forms and level of sparring become more difficult, creating a "mountain" that must be overcome. 41

The Basic curriculum is derived from beginner forms that the Master Club and Leadership Students perform. These define the Basics you will do. The instructors will select basics from these (you will not be memorizing the sequence). Kids are required to perform one half of the adult material at graduation and Tiny Tigers perform all material with a leader. Remember you are responsible for remembering your lower rank curriculum. You may be re-examined on your knowledge of this material. The easiest way to remember them is to practice them regularly.

Sparring
Sparring is an important and very fun part of your training. This is when you will start to learn applications of techniques you have previously learned, and develop the skills to respond automatically to an attack. You will need to bring the following to every class (whether you think we will be sparring or not); ATAApproved Safety Gear (Feet, Hand, Headgear), Mouthpiece, Cup (for Men). To keep your sparring experience safe and fun, we always use proper safety gear and all sparring is supervised by instructors. Have FUN!!

Rank Requirements: Board Breaking
Board breaking is designed to be a safe way to practice application of power in techniques. It's better to break a board than practice on each other! Other benefits of board breaking training include focus (you must focus on the target to break it), proper execution (only through proper technique will you break the board), power (you must kihap!) and most importantly, attitude (board breaking is largely a mental exercise). Our instructors will guide you through to Black Belt Excellence!

Saying No!
NO!
Karate Kids know when they can say NO!
1. Is it OK to say NO to an Adult? Yes... • If they try to take you somewhere without your parent’s permission. • It’s also OK to say no to an adult if they try to touch you without your parent’s permission and you feel afraid. 2. What if my parent’s ask me to take out the trash or do my homework? Of course not! PARENT Practice: When you say NO! You also want to: • Raise your hands • Step Back • Go to your parents! Kids and parents should practice this. Parents can pretend they are a bad guy.
It’s good to be quiet, but there are times when you need to be loud for your own safety!

Magic Word
Karate Kids Know Who They Ride With. The magic word is a code word that you share with your parents. No one is to know this word other than you and your parents. It is used as a code word in special ways. Maybe one day your mother or father is sick and sends someone to pick you up from school. You should only go with that person if he or she knows the magic word. If a person tries to pick you up who does not know the magic word, you should run away, find help and call 911. To parents: Note that we said “share”, and the word is not called a “secret word”. This is important, because Karate Kids are taught not to have secrets from adults.

More Safety
Karate Kids never allow anyone to take them anywhere!
The best self-defense is to avoid being in a position where you would be at risk to be grabbed or taken. IF it does happen, when grabbed by an adult: CAUSE A BIG SCENE! Scream Throw Kick Bite When you get away - go to your parents!
PARENT Practice: Practice together with a qualified instructor at a martial arts school. !
It’s not likely to happen, but you must be prepared, just in case!

911
Karate Kids are SAFE Kids.
1. 911 is a phone number you can call from almost any phone in the country. 2. You do not need money to dial this number from a pay phone. 3. Dial this number only in an emergency. 4. When talking on the 911 line, stay calm and speak clearly. 5. Tell the 911 operator the emergency, if anyone is hurt and give your location. 6. Once the 911 operator knows the problem, he or she will send help right away. 7. Stay on the line until help comes. 8. Remember that 911 is not a toy. 9. If you have trouble dialing 911, you can dial 0 for the operator.

Fire Escape
Karate Kids have a Fire Escape Plan!
1. Make a step-by-step fire escape plan. Have two ways to leave every room in your house. An alternate route is necessary in case the easy way out is blocked. 2. Keep a flashlight and whistle within reach. The flashlight will light your path and the whistle can signal for help. 3. Agree on a family meeting place away from your house during an emergency to see who may need help. 4. Make sure everyone knows how to open all windows and doors, especially if special locks are used. 5. Be sure everyone in your family knows how to dial 911. Also make sure everyone knows the address and phone number at home. 6. Have a rope ladder handy if you may need to escape from an upstairs room. 7. Practice fire drills often until all fire escape habits become second nature. 8. The fire department is always able to assist you when you have a question about fire escape or fire safety.
If there is a fire... 1. Follow the escape route as planned. 2. Do not stop to call for help or get pets. 3. If your clothes catch on fire, you should stop, drop and roll. 4. Remember that smoke rises, so crawl on the floor, under the smoke. Don’t stand up. 5. If a door is warm, don’t open it. If smoke is coming through the bottom of the door, block it with a sheet or towel. 6. Use your flashlight and whistle, and yell out “Fire” for everyone to hear. 7. When you are outside, go straight to your meeting place. Do not go back inside. If someone is missing tell a firefighter. Remember to check the batteries in your smoke detectors monthly, and be prepared!

Gang Avoidance Karate Kids are Learning to be Leaders! 1. As a martial artist you are learning to be a leader, but at times you are told to follow someone else’s example. 2. When your instructor tells you to follow someone else’s example, he or she is teaching you to role model. Role modeling is OK if you are looking to a good example for a positive answer.
3. You get into trouble when you follow someone who does things you know are wrong.
4. Leaders of gangs don’t want to get caught, so they ask others to do things for them. When you know something is wrong, don’t do it. 5. Take pride in yourself, and avoid gangs.

Drug Prevention Karate Kids have Self-Control!
There are drugs that cure illness and drugs that are harmful to you. The good drugs are given to you by a doctor. Doctors are trained to decide what kind of medicine you should use for your illness. You only use the drugs that are recommended by the doctor for you. Medicines given to your Mom or Dad could be harmful to you if used in the wrong amounts or in combination with another drug.
You are in control of yourself. If someone tells you to do something or eat something that you know is harmful or you feel uncomfortable about, don’t do it. Don’t be afraid to talk to your Mom or Dad about drugs. They are there to help you and take care of you.

Pool Safety
Karate Kids are Responsible Kids! 1. ALWAYS have parents supervision. The parents are the “Water Watchers“ 2. NEVER go into the pool or bathtub on your own. Parents: It only takes 2 minutes for your child to lose consciousness in the pool and only 4-6 minutes for them to sustain permanent brain damage. There are 2 main areas to consider in keeping your child safe. 1. Supervision • Always have a “Water Watcher“. If there are several children you may need more than one watcher. • If a child is missing, look in the pool area first. • Baby-sitters, grandparents and friends must know safety rules and CPR. • Have a phone by the pool so 911 can be called. 2. Your Home • Have a fence around the pool at least 5 feet high with no more than 4 inch spacing between bars. It should be self-closing and have a self latching lock out of the reach of children. • Have supplemental door locks at least 5 feet off the ground. • Pool alarms and Pool covers. As of 2001, no studies have shown them to be effective in reducing drowning incidents.

Bicycle Safety Karate Kids Prepare to Ride Safe!
1. ALWAYS wear a helmet that fits correctly: • Level and low - just above the eyebrows • Must touch all around the head - use the sponge pads to adjust. • Front and rear straps form a “Y” just below the ears. • Chinstrap must be snug - allowing only one finger between the strap and chin. 2. Make sure your bike fits: • Smaller children: feet can firmly touch the ground when seated. • Larger children: tiptoes can barely touch while seated. 3. Ride Safely: • Ride in the right hand lane of the road, in the same direction as the cars. • Children under 8: ride on the sidewalk until riding and traffic skills are developed. • Walk bike across intersections. • Stop and look both ways before entering a street from the sidewalk, driveway or between parked cars. • Obey all traffic signals - they apply to bikes as well as cars. • Be predictable - use hand signals. • When riding at night wear light colors and reflectors on bike. Parents: It may seem that some of these rules do not apply to younger kids, however, we want to encourage you to understand the rules and start educating them early. Make sure you are a good leader by example and wear a helmet too!

Sun Safety! Karate Kids are Safe in the Sun!
1. Remember the sun’s rays are the strongest from 10am to 4pm. 2. Use a suncreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. The SPF tells you how long you can stay in the sun without getting sunburned. If you normally burn after 20 minutes and you put on a sunscreen with an SPF rating of 15, you will get 15 times the protection or 300 minutes (15 SPF X 20 minutes = 300 minutes). 3. Be sure to put sunscreen all over your body including places you might not think of like the tops of your ears, the back of your neck, your face and the tops of your feet. 4. Don’t forget your eyes need protection from UV rays too! Always wear sunglasses in the bright sun and make sure they have a UV protection label when you buy them. 5. When you’re swimming or boating, the sun can do double the damage, because water reflects and intensifies the the sun’s rays. Be sure to wear a waterproof sunscreen and always reapply the sunscreen after swimming, even if it s waterproof. 6. Drink plenty of water and liquids that replace electrolytes (like sports drinks).
