Our Mission: Preserving Prallsville Mills, interpreting its history and fostering its use for cultural, educational and community activities

r

History of the Mill r - BUILT IN 1720 -

A

wooden gristmill was built at the juncture of the Wickecheoke Creek and the Delaware River in 1720. It prospered under a succession of owners through the 18th century and was sold to John Prall Jr. in 1794. Prall expanded his business, adding a sawmill, stone quarry and two fisheries, and turned the community of Prallsville into a major commercial center for the rural countryside. Throughout the 19th Century, the Mill remained an important commercial center. But by the 1950’s, the property, no longer used as a grist mill, began to deteriorate and was put up for sale as an attractive site for a strip mall. To preserve the site, Donald and Beverley Jones purchased the complex in 1969 and began to invest in its restoration.

The Prallsville Mills was included on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The entire property became part of the D&R Canal State Park in 1974 and was designated part of the National Scenic Byway in 2009. In 1976, when the State of New Jersey took ownership of the Mill property, it was unable to fund its ongoing restoration. Local citizens joined with the Jones family, forming the Delaware River Mill Society with a mission statement that pledges to “restore, preserve, operate, maintain and interpret the Prallsville Mills. We invite you to join us in our ongoing efforts to preserve this special space on the Delaware.

A Message From Our President Jefferson Barnes

Dear Supporters, As a local resident for over 30 years, I’ve long admired the Prallsville Mills complex. It’s so much more than a historic building; it’s a community meeting place, where everyone from artists and historians to tai chi devotees can meet and connect with like-minded people. The mission to save the Mill began 45 years ago, thanks to the extraordinary vision of Donald Jones. It’s a mission I’ve been proud to be a part of as President. We’ve put a lot of hard work and dedication into preserving the complex and community center. Whether it’s our annual arts and crafts show, an intimate folk music concert, or even a runner stopping for a quick break from an exhilarating run on the Towpath, our programming attracts a whole new audience to the Mill. I’m extremely proud of how far we’ve come, but as is the case with any historic building, let alone ten, there is always more work to be done. It’s why fundraising events, including tonight’s Progressive Dinner, are vital to our future success. I would like to extend my personal gratitude to the Board of Trustees for their tireless dedication to our mission. I’d also like to thank you for your generous support and am delighted that you are part of our present, and our future, at Prallsville Mills. Sincerely,

Jeff Barnes Jefferson Barnes, President

A Message From Our Director Elizabeth Japchen Dear Prallsville Mills Supporters and Progressive Dinner Attendees, Before long, tonight’s Progressive Dinner will be another event in the books, but this one evening goes far beyond just any event. It’s the lifeblood of our mission at Prallsville Mills; the single largest fundraising effort to support our efforts to preserve this historic complex for years to come. It’s also a time when we see the heart and soul of our community and their connection to the Mill. The Progressive Dinner always reminds me a bit of Thanksgiving, when you finally sit down to enjoy a meal that has taken days of planning and preparation and watch as it disappears in a matter of minutes. Similarly, the Progressive Dinner takes months of planning and a lot of hard work, but unlike my house at Thanksgiving, this is far from a one-person job. I owe a debt of gratitude to the many who gave of their time and talents to support the mission of Prallsville Mills. Without them, I know this evening’s event would not be nearly as successful.

- HISTORIC PRALL HOUSE -

- RAISE THE PADDLE FUNDRAISER -

Raise the Paddle to Raise the Roof…and More! Although across the street from the Mill buildings, the historic Prall House is the beating heart of our complex. Built by John Prall in the late 1700’s, it has been described by historians as one of Stockton’s most significant early dwellings. In 2015, ownership of the Prall House was turned over to the state of NJ and the Delaware River Mill Society began its stewardship of the property. The Mill Society has worked tirelessly to preserve this historic treasure and in 2018, the 1772 Foundation and New Jersey Historic Trust awarded us a $15,000 grant to be used for repairs at the Prall House. Combined with the matching funds donated by the Mill Society’s loyal members and sponsors, the Delaware River Mill Society invested $30,000 into the property, beginning with repairs and repainting of the doors, windows and millwork. The project has been overseen by Michael J. Margulies, AIA of Eclectic Architecture, LLC. As any owner of a historic home can attest, the maintenance projects are never-ending. This work is just the beginning, and in March

we applied for additional funding to continue and complete the repairs to restore the building envelope of the Prall House. We are optimistic that we will receive an award from the Hunterdon County Open Space Trust Fund and the Historic Preservation Grant this year to be earmarked for completion of the work on the windows and doors. The Prall House is also in desperate need of a new roof. We are delighted to announce that Michael Margulies, AIA of Eclectic Architecture, LLC will be facilitating a grant through Preserve NJ. In order to unlock a potential $60,000 of grant funding, we are asking our supporters to meet a fundraising goal of $20,000. The potential total of $80,000 would breathe new life into the building and would allow us to complete the building envelope, including the new roof. Please raise your paddle high to support the important work we are doing to preserve and protect the Prall House for generations to come.
