Leif Erikson was the first European to explore North America. He did this in 1000 AD. He sailed off course when he was leaving Iceland to get back to Greenland. But he went to North America instead of Greenland.

Marco Polo is famous for traveling through Asia. He became one of the first Europeans to travel through Mongolia and Persia. Later on he published a book called The Travels of Marco Polo. This book got many people interested in China and the Far East.

Christopher Columbus went west in 1492 to find the Indies. He could not go by land because the road was blocked. He wanted to get the gold, spices, and silk from Asia.

John Cabot was famous for claiming land for England. In 1497, he claimed a little bit of Canada, but he thought it was Asia. He sailed through an island called Newfoundland.

Amerigo Vespucci 1454 – 1512 Birth Place: Florence, Italy By: Alexa Keating
Amerigo Vespucci is famous for sailing to the Northern Shore of South America and went with Alonso De Ojeda, but they got separated and moved on. While he was there he declared that South America was no longer part of Asia. That is why the Americas are named after him.

Juan Ponce de Le贸n is most known for founding St. Augustine, Florida and the oldest settlement in Puerto Rico. Sadly, he died in 1521 because of a poison dart in the thigh.

Ferdinand Magellan was a explorer born in Sabrosa or Porto Portugal circa 1480. Magellan is best known as the first person to sail around the world in 1519. Magellan proved that the world was round and not flat as most people thought. King Charles I, the grandson of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, sponsored Magellan’s expedition around the world. Magellan traveled around the Pacific Ocean region and was killed by a poisoned dart in Mactan, Philippines on April 27,1521.
