GNBS celebrates CROSQ on CARICOM Day 2022

The GNBS on Monday, July 04, 2022, joined in celebrating the 49th anniversary of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

One of the key organisations within the regional framework is the CARICOM Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ), which was established to promote efficiency and the competitive production of goods and services

AIP the National Metrology Centre of Panama, titled ‘Introduction to the metrological verification of electricity meters’.

Topics covered included the importance of energy measurement, electric energy meters and metrological verification service for meters.

The new piece of equipment was recently acquired from ZERA India, which facilitated a practical training with employees from the Bureau and Guyana Power & Light Inc (GPL)

The practical training was preceded by a four day theoretical session hosted during the period July 05 08, 2022 by CENAMEP

This is made possible with the acquisition of a modern Electricity test bench capable of verifying five (5) meters simultaneously.

On July 12, the GNBS commenced the Mobile Stamping of scales, masses and measures in the marketplaces across the country an exercise which is done twice yearly by Legal Metrology Inspectors of the GNBS Main and Sub offices and Weights and Measures Officers within the Administrative Regions.

In trade, consumers rely on a system of measurement to ensure that accurate quantities of goods are provided to them, and the GNBS as the National Metrology Institute works to ensure traceable measurement services.

Metro Office and Computer Supplies, on the evening of Tuesday, July 12, 2022, was presented with its ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems Certificate by the National Certification Body of Jamaica (NCBJ), under the 11th EDF EPA Programme.

The GNBS played an integral role in realizing this outstanding achievement by Metro, which is now the newest internationally Certified Company in Guyana

In attendance at ceremony were representatives of the CARICOM Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ), the National Certification Body of Jamaica (NCBJ), Caribbean Forum (CARIFORUM), the European Union, the GNBS, the National Standards Council (virtually), Staff of Metro Office and Computer Supplies, and special invitees from the Private Sector

Speaking on behalf of the GNBS and the Ministry of Tourism Industry and Commerce, Executive Director (Ag) of the Bureau, Ms. Ramrattie Karan stated, “Choosing the path of Standardisation, let alone, the certification to the International Standard that focuses on quality management is a clear message that this company (Metro) wants sustainability to be in business for many years to come ”

The presentation occurred at a handover ceremony held at the Grand Coastal Hotel, East Coast Demerara.

The Bureau, during 2021 worked with the Metro Team providing Technical Assistance towards the implementation of the Quality Management System requirements.

THE INTERNATIONAL BUILDING EXPO

As we seek to address the needs of our stakeholders, the GNBS from July 22 26 established a booth at the International Building Expo 2022 which was hosted under the theme “A new frontier for building a One Guyana.” The exciting Building Exposition saw participation from over 300 exhibitors.

The Marketing, Communications and Business Development teams were able to interact with several contractors, engineers, manufacturers, and homeowners who visited the Bureau’s booth during the period

MANUFACTURER OF SANITATION DISINFECTANT CHAMBERS

CERTIFIED TO USE THE MADE IN GUYANA MARK

The GNBS presented Global Stars International Imports and Exports with the certificate of approval to use the Made in Guyana Standards Mark on its Sanitation Disinfectant Chamber. The Handing Over Ceremony took place at the International Building Expo bring the total to six (6) Guyanese Company Certified to Use the GNBS Made in Guyana Certification Mark. The Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Hon. Oneidge Walrond presented the certificate to the Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of the company, Mr. Bishan Ganpat and Ms. Kameel Klass, respectively. Also in attendance were the GNBS Executive Director (Ag), Ms Ramrattie Karan and Technical Officers, Mr. Keon Rankin and Ms. Yan Yi Zhu and Executive Director of Guyana Manufacturing & Services Association Ltd, Mr Nizam Hassan

Both certifications are valid for 1 year and the GNBS will conduct surveillance visits to ensure the approved quality is maintained through the period of certification in keeping with the respective terms and conditions

On July 29, the GNBS presented two certificates to KSM Investments Inc for being the first company in the construction sector to use the Made in Guyana Standards Mark on its concrete hollow blocks, vent blocks and pavers

The blocks were certified for meeting the compressive strength and water absorption in accordance with the Guyana Standard Specification for Load Bearing Masonry Concrete Units (GYS 215:2018).

Additionally, under the GNBS Product Certification Programme, KSM Investments Inc was also permitted to use the National Standards Mark on its various sizes of Concrete Hollow Blocks.

Lethem, Region #9

This training was done by Officers of our Business Development Department in Lethem, Region Nine (9) with a total twenty nine (29) participants.

Participants were taught the requirements f ensuring food safety in their job.

The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) from August 08 10 conducted a training programme on Food Safety Prerequisites with officers of the Guyana Food Safety Authority (GFSA).

These items are inspected by inspectors of our Product Compliance Department and in the month of August, the GNBS Corporate Communications Department partnered with the Department of Consumer Affairs to share those tips.

Internal Auditing of ISO Management Systems Training conducted by GNBS

Internal Audits determine status of a company’s Qua Management System and t training course helped participa acquire the tools to execute an effective audit process, write intelligible and accurate nonconformity statements and assess the significance of the findings and prepare the audit report.

Officers of our Busin Development Departm facilitated a three-day train course on Internal Auditing of I Management Systems from Aug 16 18, 2022.

Understanding the Requirements of ISO

Understanding the Requirements of ISO 9001:2015 course allowed participants to understand the intent of the ISO 9001 standard, what needs to be done to build an ISO 9001:2015 system, upgrading the current systems or integrating it with another management system, benefits of implementing the quality management system and the application of the requirements to a typical business environment.

Officers of our Business Development Team conducted a three day training course on Understanding the Requirements of ISO 9001:2015 Standard.

Technical Officers of the GNBS Business Development Department conducted a Risk Management Training Course on August 23 24 for twenty participants from local companies.

The Training Course is expected to help with the implementation of risk management methods and techniques to minimize the impact of risks.

During the course, participants were taught the principles of Risk Management, how to design, implement, monitor & review and continually improve the Risk Management Framework, and the Risk Management Process which included Identification, Analysis, Evaluation and Treatment of Risks

GNBS IN FOCUS 22 POMEROON OIL MILL INC. & HENVIL FARM CERTIFIED TO USE THE MADE IN GUYANA STANDARDS MARK

The coconut industry is an expanding business in the Pomeroon. Pomeroon Oil Mill Inc. was granted certification to use the prestigious mark on its Golden Brook Coconut Oil and its JUV Fragrance Oil.

The Made in Guyana Standards Mark is a registered mark that aims to provide recognition to locally manufactured products on the local and international markets and is a signature of quality for authentic Guyanese Products

Executive Director (Ag) at the GNBS Ms. Ramrattie Karan lauded both companies for meeting the quality requirements of the programme She added that they will enjoy a competitive advantage in the local and international markets.

The second company to receive certification Henvil Farm is located at Malbrough, Lower Pomeroon River. Henvil Farm was established in 2011 and produces bottled coconut water which it also packages for other companies

The Certification is valid for 1 year and the GNBS will conduct surveillance visits to ensure the approved quality is maintained through the certification period in keeping with the respective terms and conditions.

The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) on Thursday, August 18, 2022, certified two companies in Region Two (Pomeroon – Supenaam) under its Made in Guyana Certification Mark Programme. The companies namely: Pomeroon Oil Mill Inc and Henvil Farm received their certificates to use the Made in Guyana Standards Mark on their locally manufactured products.

“Construction of the New Laboratory Facility for the GNBS. The new lab facility will be located in the Sophia Exhibition Complex

Construction of this new state of the art facility, will equip the GNBS with international standard laboratory facilities to assure reliability and provide adequate space to perform tests for consumer protection and certifying production standards Additionally, the facility will allow for increased calibration capacity for temperature, moisture, pressure, force, volume and electricity; adequate equipment and the ability to maintain its ISO accreditation; and sufficiently trained staff to perform tests and calibrations.

The Government of Guyana, with support from the Inter American Development Bank has ensured that this project which is expected to be completed within the next 18 months,

Guyana Water Incorporated Laborat gets re-certified to th requirements of the G 170 Standard.

Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) Laboratory was re certified by the GNBS to the requirements of the Guyana Standard GYS 170:2009: General Requirements for the Operations of a Laboratory The certificate was presented to the utility company’s laboratory on August 31.

At the certification ceremony, the Head of Water Quality (Ag), Avinash Parsram signaled the laboratory’s intention to expand the scope of certification to include wastewater testing.
