In 2022, the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) continued its activities and initiatives to promote standards and quality across the country It has been another y of substantial achievements as we expanded our range and scope of services, physica infrastructure, and our work team
The main highlights of our success this year include the certification of more than twe (20) local manufacturers to use the Made in Guyana Standards Mark on their product and the opening of three new branch offices in regions one, five and nine. In addition, trained hundreds of public and private sector personnel on standards and hosted the Standards in Academia Quiz Competition for Primary Schools in five administrative regions
The Bureau also worked with several local companies towards international certificati and certified new laboratories and products conforming to standards We also commenced the testing of Crude to aid in the development of Guyana’s Oil and Gas sector
Further, we continued to deliver on our measurement and monitoring services, verify and calibrate thousands of measuring instruments in commerce and industry, respectively; and conducted inspections of the seventeen categories of imported and locally manufactured products to protect consumers
To maintain stakeholder confidence and reliability, we maintained our ISO 9001:2015 certification and ISO 17025:2017 Accreditation. Meanwhile, works have commenced on the construction of the new GNBS state of the art laboratory facility
As we work to create a culture of quality through standards in Guyana, we urge you to continue with us on this journey In 2023, we promise to be even more responsive to the needs of all our stakeholders including businesses across the sectors of our rapidly growing economy

To kick start the activities for the month of November, the GNBS conducted a three-day training programme on Internal Auditing of ISO Management Systems.
Participants of this training programme included those from Medical Lab Services, Massy Distribution, Beharry and Quality Health and Safety Inc.
At the end of the programme, participants were guaranteed to execute effective auditing processes, write intelligible and accurate non-conformity statements, assess the significance of the findings, prepare audit reports and so much more.
The purpose of an ISO Internal Audit is to assess the effectiveness of an organization’s quality management system and its overall performance. Internal Audits demonstrate compliance with the Quality Management System (QMS) and how its processes are implemented and maintained.

Guyana National Bureau of Standards in collaboration with the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) interacted and conducted school lectures with Business students of the Bladen Hall Multilateral, Marian Academy, West Demerara Secondary, Leonora Secondary, Stewartville Secondary, Mahaicony Secondary, Fort Wellington Secondary and Rosignol Secondary.
The Grades Ten (10) and Eleven (11) students were given the opportunity to learn about the key functions of the GNBS, careers in Standards, the importance of using the International System of Units (Metric System) and their rights and responsibilities as consumers
Meanwhile, similar lectures were conducted with students at the St. Ignatius Secondary School in Lethem, Region Nine (9) and the Mabaruma Secondary Region One (1) as the GNBS visited those regions to open its new branch offices.
Officers from the Business Development and Marketing Departments engaged exhibitors at the Guyana Supplier Forum to share information on the various services of the Guyana National Bureau of Standards.
The purpose of these interactions was to encourage business personnel to utilize the GNBS services to accelerate their business growth and development.

Home Care Medical Laboratory became the first medical laboratory on the Essequibo Coast to receive certification from the Guyana National Bureau of Standards for confirming to the requirements of the GYS 170:2009 Standard – General Requirements for the Operation of a Laboratory.

Woodlands Limited Medical Laboratory was recertified to the revised National Standard GYS 170:2021 Standard (General requirements for the operation of a laboratory).
In a brief ceremony, a plaque and certificate were handed over by the Technical Officers of the GNBS Mr. Keon Rankin and Mr. Orlando Sturge to Managing Director of Woodlands Hospital Limited, Dr. Neville Gobin and Quality Manager, Ms. Hemwatie Kumar.
Meanwhile Steve’s Jewellery received a plaque from the Guyana National Bureau of Standards for their commitment to maintaining the requirements of the GYS 50:2022 Standards, Specifications for Gold Articles.
A certificate and plaque were were also handed over by Technical Officers of the GNBS’ Certification Services Department, to Proprietor of Steve’s Jewellery, Mr. Kevin Narine and Sales Representative, Ms. Maria Ramnarain.
Denmor Garments Manufacturing Inc. became the first garment manufacturer to achieve the rights to use the GNBS Approved Made in Guyana Standards Mark for its Safety Garments (PPE).
In a brief handing over ceremony held on November 11, 2022 at the GNBS Head Office, the Made in Guyana Certificate was handed over by the GNBS Head of Certification Services, Ms Andrea Mendonca to the Directors of Denmor Garments Manufacturing Inc., Ms. Fatma Mudlier, Ms. Upasna Mudlier, Ms. Serojiniee Mudlier-Persaud and Ms. Nandanie Mudlier.

The GNBS Director (Ag.), Ms. Ramrattie Karan provided remarks at the Opening Ceremony which was held at the office location.Other presenters were the Regional Industry, Mr. Daniel Gajie, Regional Executive Officer (Ag ), Ms Coretta Lyken, Regional Commander, Superintendent Raphael Rose, and Town Clerk, Ms Keisha Vincent To open the new office, the ribbon was cut by pupils from Arapaima Primary School.
This new sub-office which also includes a training facility, was established to better service the region in accordance with the GNBS’ mandate, taking our Core Services to businesses and stakeholders in the region

The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) has certified five additional companies under its Made in Guyana Certification Mark Programme.
The companies, Denmor Garments Manufacturing, Guyana Thermoplastic Limited (Toolsie Persaud Group of Companies), Prestige Manufacturing & Bottling Enterprise, Sterling Products Limited and Nand Persaud and Company Limited were certified to use the Made in Guyana Standards Mark on their locally manufactured products.
The second company to attain certification was Guyana Thermoplastic Limited (Toolsie Persaud Group of Companies) which was certified to use the Made in Guyana Standards Mark on its PVC Pipes and PVC Conduits Additionally, they are the first Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) Pipes Manufacturer Certified to use the Made in Guyana Standards Mark.

Prestige Manufacturing & Bottling Enterprise was granted approval to use the Made in Guyana Standards Mark on its hot sauce, mustard oil, mixed essence, almond essence, cake colouring, mango achar, lime achar, tamarind achar, green seasoning, miracle seasoning, cassava cassareep, Chinese sauce, bilimbi achar and koraila in lime.
The Made in Guyana Certification Mark is a registered mark that aims to provide recognition to locally manufactured products on a national, regional, and international level.
It focuses on creating competitiveness for authentic Guyanese products certified under the Programme while creating a framework for the development of quality systems within our local content
They were all afforded an opportunity to understand the requirements of the GYS 235 Standard and how it can be implemented to promote safety management within a laboratory.
Additionally, the training allowed participants to identify unsafe practices within the work environment through risk assessments, developing safety policies and providing guidance for conducting safety audits to ensure conformance to the standard and applicable legal requirements.
As we drew closer to the end of the month of November and the end of the year, team members from the Administration Department of the Guyana National Bureau of Standards prepared a Guyanese creole lunch for all employees
On the menu this month was dhal and rice, bunjal chicken curry, coconut choka, callaloo, fried fish and lime wash, popularly known as ‘swank’.
This activity is aimed at fostering employees’ development and team-building capacity.
The GNBS is committed to fostering employee’s growth and development, through various team-building programmes by creating a cohesive and diversified working environment.
A team from the Guyana National Bureau of Standards kicked off meetings with officials in Mabaruma, Region One (1), Barima-Waini, ahead of the opening of a brand-new sub-office in the town of Mabaruma, on November 30, 2022.
The team included Head of the Business Development Department, Mr. Al Fraser, Head of Product Compliance, Mr. Omesh Balmacoon and Communications Officer, Ms. Bibi Khatoon.
Meetings were conducted with Regional Chairman, Mr. Brentnol Ashley and Regional Executive Officer, Mr. Tikaram Bissessar, followed by engagements with Mayor of Mabaruma, His Worship Chris Phang, Deputy Mayor, Ms. Carolyn Robinson, Town Clerk, Mr. Ganesh Seecharan and Superintendent of Works, Mr. Jimal Bridglall.
These meetings and engagements were held to inform officials of services which will be provided in the region and to cement collaboration and support

The Made in Guyana certification mark is a registered mark that aims to provide recognition to locally manufactured products on a national, regional, and international level. It focuses on creating competitiveness for authentic Guyanese products certified under the Programme while creating a framework for the development of quality systems within our local content.
The Certification is valid for 1 year and the GNBS will conduct surveillance visits to ensure the approved quality is maintained throughout the certification period in keeping with the respective terms and conditions.
Another laboratory was recertified by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards, Medical Arts Laboratory received recertification to the revised National Standard, GYS 170:2021 (General Requirements for the Operation of a Laboratory).
In a brief ceremony, a certificate and plaque were handed over by a Technical Officers of the GNBD Certification Services Department Mr. Keon Rankin and Ms. Yan Yi Zhu, to the Laboratory Quality Manager, Camilla Ragobar and Laboratory Supervisor, Kimelle Wright, in the presence of the Administrator Fazeela Salim; among other employees
The GNBS Team also presented two Certification stickers whereby one was placed at the entrance of their Facility Laboratory.
Just before Christmas, Davis Memorial Hospital and Clinic Laboratory had its certification renewed by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards.
The laboratory demonstrated conformance to Standards, and continuous maintenance of the requirements of the GYS 170 Standard, General Requirements for the Operation of a Laboratory

As the festive season commenced, the Guyana National Bureau of Standards hosted a fundraising activity, where all proceeds were donated to support a family in need.
Additionally, to further usher in the Christmas season, staff of the GNBS enjoyed an evening of Christmas caroling and good company as the GNBS Christmas Tree was lit up
In an effort to magnify its brand awareness, the Guyana National Bureau of Standards in collaboration with SS Natural Fruit Flavoured Inc., Basdeo’s Dynasty and Only Coconut participated in this year’s Christmas Village, along Main Street Avenue.

As it is the season of giving and sharing, the Guyana National Bureau of Standards in demonstration of fulfilling its Corporate Social Responsibility, was proud to bring smiles to the faces of children at the Canaan Children’s Home in Port Mourant, Region Six, by distributing toys and treats.
The toys were donated by staff of the Bureau as part of the Holiday Toy Drive.
