ewing fairy tales that little girls dream of, three designers add oomph, glamour and edgy style to the Goan spirit of designer dressing. For the past month, gorgeous models donning the stunning creations of three Goa-based designers have lit up night clubs around Goa in the Fashion Fridays Club Nite Series. All this brought a new dimension to the concept of Goan glamour, with chic beats, delightful cocktails and a mobile cat walk making the rounds in different clubs around the state. The result was a fabulous time had by all. Now that the party’s over, let’s hear from the designers themselves, Suman Bhat, Pranjal Kadkade and Diksha Khanna.

What sets us apart, is our collaborative design concept where ‘Lola by Suman B’ brings together my unique style with that of whomever I am collaborating with. This ensures that the basic design sensibility will be constant, while exploring inspired and imaginative ideas through the coming together of two distinct personalities; making it different, but not disconnected. India, a fashion mecca? I think India is let’s say, ‘growing’ as a fashion destination, we’ve come a LONG way, but we haven’t gotten there yet. We are a developing country that has a huge role to play, even in an industry like fashion. I think the kind of textiles and handicrafts India has to offer has contributed largely, if not as a whole, to India being a “fashion destination.” Goan designers a class apart? The beaches, the vibe, the serenity, tranquility, the air sets Goan designers apart ... Goan designers work that extra bit and we push ourselves to be on par with designers based out of metros in terms of networking, marketing and having a larger client base… People look at Goa and admire it

with neon yellows and corals, pleated foil prints combined with crochet shorts, followed by neon riot and then resort inspired kimonos and kaftans with ivory, gold, grape-wine and classic black with hints of sunset orange. Is there anything called too much fashion in Goa? I think Goa is a great place to be and also to put your creative energy to use. The design scene is growing and looks very promising here. My label offers diversity, goes from casual to fancy and celebrates womanhood in its every form. Goan designers have one thing in common and that is their love for Goa, which also comes across in the kind of clothes they design… Ethereal, fluid, are the keywords. I’m inspired by: Clear blue skies, white sandy beaches, trance, tranquility and history sums up Goa. For me it’s absolute resort wear when in Goa! Use of natural fabrics, free flowing silhouettes, and subtle textures makes a DK ensemble best suited for Goa. 

I don’t want to restrict myself to a particular style. I want to design all different styles like Indo-Western, Bridal wear, Cocktail wear, Boho traveler and so on. Technically I got started when I was a really little kid. At the age of four, when other kids were drawing flowers and houses and their

families, I was drawing women in ball gowns and saris with handbags and curly hair adorned bows. Somewhere down the line, at the age of about 16, I decided to join B D Somani Institute of Art and Fashion Technology, Mumbai. Fashion to me is a form of self expression. It’s my own little world of fun, because it’s fun to stand out of a crowd by what you wear. For me designing is not merely a profession, but a fanatical passion that sets my work apart. And as I said, I don’t want to restrict myself to a particular style. I think fashion is heading towards a strong sense of personal style. If you look around nowadays, contrasting colors, sheer stuff, satiny smooth, mix and match, funky stuff, everything is in fashion. There is no set-in-stone rule on what to wear if you want to be fashionable. The people who look fashionable are the ones who express themselves in their outfit.

The Lowdown Steven Gutkin, the venture’s chief mentor, is an award-winning journalist who has reported from some two dozen countries in the Middle East, Asia, Africa and the Americas. An international newsman for 25 years, Steven served as Bureau Chief with the Associated Press, the world’s largest news gathering organization, in Israel and Venezuela, as well as AP’s Chief of Southeast Asia Services in Singapore and Indonesia, and Senior Editor in the US. Steven covered the rise and fall of the Medellin and Cali cocaine cartels, rode into Kabul with a triumphant Northern Alliance and directed coverage of wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Gaza and Lebanon. The Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar was caught because he lingered on the phone with his son to answer Steven’s questions, and the cops traced the call. Steven covered the killing of Daniel Pearl in Pakistan, hurricanes in Puerto Rico and Mexico, the death of Yasser Arafat, a coup in Fiji and the rise to power of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. Steven has also worked for the New York Times, the Washington Post, Newsweek and CBS Radio.

Marisha Dutt, Publisher and Editor of Goa Streets, is a former Marketing and Advertising Manager with The Wall Street Journal in Singapore. She took a break from work to raise her two boys in Indonesia, Israel and the United States. She has a Masters Degree in Marketing from The University of Strathclyde in the UK and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Relations. She was born in Assam, India and spent her early years on a tea plantation overlooking a pristine wildlife sanctuary. When she was 10, she and her family moved to Calcutta, where Marisha had the privilege of working alongside Mother Teresa. Later the family moved to Goa. Marisha and Steven were married 11 years ago on the Candolim beach.

Ananda Krishna, Photographer, turned hopefully towards the camera early in life. With an abundance of knowledge and overwhelmed by his brilliant teachers in Light and Life Academy, Ooty, Ananda (last ‘a’ is silent) set out knowing the ‘how’s’ but not the ‘why’s’ of a photograph. It took a good amount of drifting on the road and dabbling with shooting advertisements, a film, weddings, events, exhibitions, copywriting and even selling booze to finally understand where the WHY really matters for him – photojournalism.

Sneha Rodrigues – Business Development Manager. Sneha has a background in hospitality and online marketing, having worked for Club Mahindra as Marketing Manager and C2C, a medical tourism company in Kuwait, as Business Development Manager. She’s a foodie with a blog on poetry, and her best kept secret is that she has a fabulous singing voice that she puts to good use around Goa.

Nilesh Shetgaonkar, Administrative Assistant, is a happy-go-lucky Morjim native who prides himself on living life to the fullest. He spent seven years in Dubai and loves football, cricket and trivia. Radhika Naik – Editorial Assistant. A Mapusa resident, Radhika enjoys siestas and, when awake, spending time with family. She was always a big fan of the news and is thrilled to be part of that world today. Music with a slow tempo is her favourite playlist.

Selvan Gounder – Head of Distribution and Circulation. An energetic individual hailing from Chimbel, Selvan is a big fan of cricket and believes in keeping life simple. Victor Pereira– Distribution Team. Currently lives in Cavellossim after spending some time in New Delhi and Kerala. Victor gets a kick out of fidgeting with electrical equipment, and his claim to fame in the Goa Streets office is his winning combination of helpfulness and humility.

Vijay Gadekar– Distribution Team. Aside from being very handy in all things mechanical, Vijay is a big fan of football with an equal passion for quality beach time. Kunda Salkar – Office Assistant. A resident of Mapusa, Kunda goes through life with a permanent, and contagious, smile on her face. And it’s not just her delicious cooking that makes others smile.

You don’t have to be a particularly observant person to notice the smart phone explosion in Goa. Suddenly, seemingly everybody has a beautiful phone. Sure, there are still lots of holdouts, old-fashioned Blackberry aficionados and lovers of simple Nokias. But overall, we’re seeing such rapid growth in fancy touch-screen phones that chat and snap and stream that we felt compelled to make them our cover story in this edition of Goa Streets. It’s definitely fone fever, or shall we say phone phever, in Goa! We hope you enjoy our coverage of this noteworthy phenomenon. We’d also like to draw your attention to our coverage of the real estate roller coaster ride in Goa, where we explore exactly what’s happening in the industry today. Bottom line: It’s a buyer’s market at the moment, with too few buyers for too many homes. Things could change rapidly with a new government and clearer fiscal policies, but few think it’s a good time to sell now. Also check out our piece on French contemporary artist Yahel Chirinian, a very sought after designer/artist who happens to make Goa her home. If you haven’t heard of her, it’s probably because of the low profile she keeps at her studio/home in Arpora, the Monsoon Heritage Studio, where she employs a number of women with troubled backgrounds. Believe us, Yahel is a big deal. Be sure not to miss Sheela Jaywant’s somewhat cantankerous post-IFFI coverage, Ethel Da Costa’s piece on the Fashion Fridays Club Nite Series and Charlane Pereira e Rebello’s alternately humorous and informative story on venomous snakes. f you’ve been paying attention to Goa and all things Goan, then you probably already know that the Alila Diwa Goa in Majorda (South Goa) has been making quite a splash on the local culinary, musical and hospitality scene. Some of it can be chalked up to the high standards propagated by the Singapore-based hotel chain, with properties in Bali, Jakarta, Bangalore and Goa. Part of it is surely also because of the local team here in Goa led by the innovative and open-minded General Manager Siddharth Savkur, who himself is a great lover of food, drink and good times. Speaking of eating and drinking, Goa Streets has already written about several of Alila Diwa’s venues, including the wonderful Indian restaurant Spice Studio and the sleek drinking establishment Edge Bar, with its out-of-the-box entertainment offerings. Today our focus is on Bistro, the restaurant overlooking the pool of the Diwa Club, the newest and most luxurious section of the resort. The first thing you have to know about Bistro is that, despite its name, it’s not exclusively a French restaurant. Sure there are French influences, to be sure, but the overall culinary experience can best be described as Mediterranean and Middle Eastern, with some undeniable Asian inspirations. To test the promise of a Middle Eastern influence, we decided to try the Cold Mezze platter one recent afternoon, with its hummus, tabouleh, babagannoush, fattoush, marinated olives, roasted peppers and pita bread. The hummus and babagannoush required more salt, but once we added that ourselves, it’s safe to say they easily measured up to what you’d expect at an authentic Middle Eastern table. One of the highlights of this particular eating experience came with what we tried next, the Grilled Prawns, served with side salad, balsamic dressing and parsley butter. The prawns were enormous, and well prepared with nuanced seasoning that provided real depth of flavour. This was an undisputed winner of a dish!

Next came the Spaghetti, a hearty and satisfying dish also packed with flavour. The Crispy Calamari, flour dusted and served with garlic aioli and salad, also held its own. We were looking forward to the mini baguette we ordered with smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber. So when it arrived with grilled salmon rather than smoked salmon, there was a small amount of disappointment at the table – until we tasted it and realized it was just as good this way. (We’ve noticed it’s been hard to find smoked salmon in Goa in recent months. Have the shipments from Norway been cancelled?) Of all the Mediterranean options we sampled at Bistro, perhaps none was as interesting and thought provoking as the Gazpacho, the chilled soup with tomato, peppers, citrus segments and mint. Tangy and delicate, the tomato base paired exceptionally well with the citrus and mint – a welcome twist to the original Spanish delight. We also sampled the Pho, the Vietnamese chicken noodle soup which, while not exactly authentic, was appealing in taste and presentation. For dessert we had the Profiteroles, the Lime and Mint Homemade Sorbet and the Crumble (macerated apple, caramel and cream). We hope it’s not over the top to state categorically that of all the lovely offerings at our table this lunch time, the Crumble won hands down as the most delicious of all. This is why the phrase ‘To Die For’ was created. There are lots of other items on the menu, from Braised Lamb Shank to Seafood Paella to Tenderloin Steak to Quesadillas to Grilled Rib Eye. There’s also a good breakfast menu. If you’re in South Goa or anywhere in the vicinity of the Alila Diwa Goa, it’s well worth stopping by at the Bistro. Hankerin’ for the Sand? Check out these beach recommendations!

o much has been said about Goa’s beaches, certainly not all of it positive. To anyone who experienced the ubiquitous pristine stretches of sand that were the norm just a decade ago, there’s reason enough to mourn what’s become of many beaches today. Still, it would be very wrong to eulogize Goa as a beach destination, for there is still much about our shoreline to be savoured. Below, writer Richa Narvekar offers up some of her picks on where to head if you’re in the mood for a good beach experience – some well known, some less so. Have a look!

1. Mobor (South Goa) Access to this beach is largely blocked by the resort Leela Goa, but consequently, it remains quiet and relatively untouched. It’s very wide and very long and has incredibly soft sand. You won’t find any restaurants or pubs at this beach, or beach beds or, for that matter, people. So if you want to be one with nature, and run along the froth, there’s no beach like this one.

2.Vainguinim (Dona Paula)

Hardly anyone but the locals knows about this beach anymore, as access to it has been blocked by heavyweight corporate resorts. Again, this reality makes it particularly quiet, especially

when you consider that it’s in Dona Paula, just a few minutes drive from the hustle bustle of the capital city Panjim. There are some fantastic geological rock formations in which water gathers as the tide flows in and out. If you were thinking of a short walk on the beach with your lover, drawing sand art on the shore with sticks and collecting shells, this is the place you want to go to. That marriage proposal fantasy that’s been playing in your mind for a while now is also something that could happen here! The beach can be accessed from Vainguinim Valley Resort, where you could potentially dine after your ‘happy news’! Alternatively, if you’ve had enough of laser selling hawkers and crazy parasailing tourists, go visit Panjim city for a day, and then end it with a ‘centre yourself’ walk at Vainguinim beach.

Palolem Beach

3. Palolem (South Goa) This is probably the most famous of South Goa’s beaches. It was the subject of a Goa Streets cover story earlier this year (The New Palolem: From Sleepy Paradise to Major Hotspot http://www. goastreets.com/princess-palolem/). The website Business Insider last year named Palolem Beach one of the Top 10 Party Beaches in the world, putting it in the company of Ibiza, Miami’s South Beach, Psarou Beach on Mykonos Island and Bali’s Kuta Beach. Palolem is also home to the world famous ‘Silent Noise’ headphone parties at Neptune Point. The beach is a narrow, long strip bounded by tall rocky formations on either side (which, for the adventurous among us, can also be climbed). There’s food and accommodation catering to all tastes and economic classes. If you’re brave and/ or poor, hire a ramshackle beach hut right at the shore, preferably one with a coconut palm passing right through it (yes they have those here!). Spend the morning shopping and drinking papaya milkshakes, take a lazy swim and then wait for the evening at your shack’s balcony, just drinking beer and watching

the shore. Trust me, there’s hardly anything as amazing as this view! In the evening, after a delicious and cheap dinner and happy hour cocktails, you can go to sleep in your shack with the roar of the waves in your ear. Unforgettable!

4. Candolim (North Goa)

Why is Candolim on this list? Well, it’s not as much because of Candolim as because of Baga and Calangute, which, owing to the careless trash throwing of some insensitive tourists and the frenzied competition of local shacks, today come across more like a circus than a beach. Happily, Candolim next door is still, in relative terms, a nice place. Candolim is better known for its long line of shops and multi-cuisine restaurants, which hide the beach. Little lanes between the shops provide access to the beach, which still provides decent swimming as well as many little shacks serving up beer and food while you lounge on your beach bed. And since Candolim is walking distance from party central, it can serve as an ideal beach to swim and chill out before the party begins!

5. Morjim (North Goa)

A long-time favourite of Russian tourists, Morjim Beach is a long stretch of sand and sea that is still not as commercial as Calangute or Baga, but still has enough crowd to see a host of new shacks every season. The water is still relatively clear and makes for great swimming. If you come at around 4 pm, when the sun isn’t out much and the people are out even less, you could even call it ‘heavenly’! Ideal if you want to settle under a thatched roof, read your book, get tipsy on your beer, and eventually, once you’ve sobered up, have some real fun on the waves with friends and family. Then you can finish up the evening with dinner at a fancy, international cusine restaurant, of which there are many here! Note: Remember to responsibly care for Goa by disposing of all your trash in bins or your own bag!

illian D’Cruz shows off her shiny new Alcatel smart phone she bought barely a day ago. “It has amazing features,” says the 30s something mother of one, who has joined the legions of Goans who simply can’t do without a phone that video streams and net surfs and Facebook chats and Shazams a song. The irony is that just a year ago she was dead against all “smart” devices. “Don’t buy a touch-screen phone,” she told her friends, believing they were nothing but problems. Today she stands converted. Her new Alcatel, bought at a price of around Rs 12,000, is testimony not just to the all pervading power of smartphone technology but also to how Indian and Chinese (Alcatel is Hong Kong-based) companies are keeping up with rivals like Apple and Samsung in a fast-paced game. Smartphone usage in Goa, like much of the rest of the country, can only be described as an explosion. Have you noticed? People who were walking around with a dinky little Nokia last week this week are sporting an oversized Samsung Galaxy Note. Your 75-year-old grandmother has suddenly decided to download Viber on her new I-Phone. All those who thought they had some kind special status because of their fancy smartphones in Goa now find themselves in the company of a gazillion others. What’s happening here? And how can so many people afford it?

Checking out the new Samsung arrivals

For one, lots of folks, like Lillian D’Cruz, are opting for less expensive smartphones. Others are buying phones on credit, with manufacturers offering interest-free financing and longterm payment plans. These days you don’t really have to be able to afford a smartphone to have one. As Lillian showed off her phone to a group of friends, boasting about the camera and functionality of the applications, some of her friends rolled their eyes. For those who had bought their phones much earlier, seeing a companion join the fold so late and gushing over its features had only one reaction: “Duh!” Defined as a cellular phone that is able to perform many of the functions of a computer, typically having a relatively large screen and an operating system capable of running general-purpose applications, smartphones today are the primary gateway to the Internet and popular social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, not to mention peer-to-peer messaging services like “Whatsapp”. A large percentage of the smartphones in Goa are made by companies such as Samsung, Sony and Motorola, which use the popular smartphone platform Android. Apple’s I-Phone has less penetration, but is making fast inroads in

Goa and throughout India. According to a new study by Nielsen India, there are some 51 million smartphone users in urban India today, an 89% increase from 2012, when there were just 27 million users. The study also reveals that the biggest spike is in the youngest age group between 16 to 18 years, where user penetration has gone from 5% in 2012 to 22% this year, a fourfold increase. Goa is no different. For a state that has the highest per capita income in the country, the state behaves like the rest of the metro cities of India rather than a tier-III city when it comes to buying preferences. There could be as many as 13-lakh mobile phones doing the rounds in the state with a population of around 15-16 lakh. Vishal Lobo, a phone dealer in Goa, said that a mobile phone was now such a necessity that even people from low income groups pool together resources to buy one. “The phone has become such a necessity now that all adults have a mobile phone. I would say that over 90% of the state’s adult population has a mobile phone, with a large percentage being smartphones,” he said. He added, however, that the surge

This may help explain the spectacular rise of Micromax, an Indian company that launched an array of phones for the Indian market a couple of years ago at jaw-droppingly low rates. “Micromax has been among the first smartphone manufacturers in the country to capitalize on this changing trend by making technology more affordable for the masses,” Rahul Sharma, co-founder of Micromax, recently told reporters. Micromax is second only to Samsung when it comes to market share in India and has made it precisely because of its pricing. Several Indian and Chinese companies like Micromax, Karbonn, Lava, Xolo and Alcatel have now begun marketing low-end smartphones along with tablet devices that seek to woo the costconscious Indian buyer. toward smartphones has tapered slightly because even many feature phones (as the old cell phones are now called) now have some of the most popular ‘apps.’ “Earlier it was just smartphones. But now even phones within Rs 5,000 give access to Facebook and Whatsapp. These are crucial features, so many go in for these phones below Rs 5,000,” he said. But that hasn’t stopped the smartphone boom. He said as many as 30% of all phone users in Goa are now smartphone users, a figure he said would only grow higher. A lot of the growth of highend phone usage is due to easy finance. “There are schemes floated by the company wherein the company pays the interest,” Lobo said. “The biggest demand is for phones between Rs 12,000 to 15,000 but there are others who go in for phones even costing up to Rs 30,000 and above,” he added. Before 2011, really only the elite could afford a smartphone because of their stiff prices. What exactly are youngsters looking for in a smartphone? “The only reason why I’m taking to a smartphone is because of Whatsapp. All my friends are there, they’ve made a group where they share common messages. I don’t want to be missing out,” said Shruti Kansar, who just graduated college. There’s no doubt that Indians long for phones and are

offering most of the functions that any other smartphone running the same operating system could, it was a huge hit.” Evidence of the smartphone revolution is found in the ample number of mobile phone shops that have sprung up around Goa’s towns. Shops that once sold garments, hosiery, collectibles and food items have shifted to selling and repairing mobile phones and other electronics. Of course, not all are enamoured of the smartphone revolution. “I’m a smartphone user myself, but am frustrated at the lack of good quality phones with a physical keypad. For a person who requires to do a lot of typing and sending newsbits as soon as possible, it is impossible to do on a touch screen pad,” said Neswin Almeida, a journalist. “I’ve searched all the Internet forums, foraging for tidbits to see if any phones with a physical qwerty were available, but to no avail,” he said, adding that his other option was Blackberry, which has now gained the reputation of being outdated and overpriced (despite launching new touch screen phones themselves). At the forefront of opposition to the smartphone revolution are the parents of youngsters who are glued to their phones. “When studying, they are on the phone, when eating they are on the phone, when sleeping, they are on the phone, at a social gathering, they are on the phone,” said Matthew D’Souza, a parent of a just-out-ofcollege kid. Such grumbling will continue and perhaps even grow. But it’s not likely to stop the revolution. 

he’s been labelled eccentric and fiercely private. Maybe that’s why I felt a tad nervous about meeting this mega talented French contemporary artist who makes Goa her home. But within 7 seconds of exchanging ‘bonjour, ca va?’ (good day, all ok?) greetings, we were talking like best girlfriends and passed the next two hours in an intimate, deeply satisfying dialogue. Upon stepping over the threshold of Yahel Chirinian’s heavenly ‘jungle’ abode, the Monsoon Heritage Studio, my thoughts were that this must be what Harry Potter felt as he broke through the platform at King’s Cross station and entered the surreal world of magic - sheer awe and amazement. Giant mirror mosaic skulls with headlights as eyes and a red dash on the forehead (depicting an Indian tika) act as goose bump inducing bodyguards, flanking both sides of the stairs leading into the main house. the mirrorwork, which is Yahel’s favourite medium, throws a kaleidoscope of light all around via the different sized fish which dangle from the ceiling, mingling with serene ganeshas and all-knowing owls. Wow. As I sit across the striking and intriguing designer, dressed casually in a trendy smock outfit that somehow works on her but would transform yours truly into a shapeless sack, one can sense this oasis of peace seeping in and lulling me into the ‘off’ mode. The sense of peace contrasts sharply with the reality before me: In what is perhaps one of Goa’s best kept secrets, this worldclass French artist and designer keeps a low profile as she renders her stunning creations commissioned by private collectors and buyers around the globe, all the while employing village women who have come from difficult backgrounds. “I’m very much like an island and live in my bubble,” Yahel tells me. “Work is my addiction and I do what I do because it makes me laugh. Depressive art holds no appeal, maybe because I’ve been through a lot and feel that what remains afterwards, should be celebrated. Bien sur (of course) it’s hard sometimes cos shit happens but we should remember that each of us is a miracle”. She backs up her sentiments with a quote from Mother Teresa stating that God only sends problems that He knows we can handle. And then she laughs, “I just

wish He didn’t trust me so much!” Born in Avignon, France in 1970, with a Tunisian-Jewish and Armenian ancestry, Yahel attended boarding school in India and was sent to Benares (Varanasi) to learn Sanskrit. India, she says, is “the most fascinating country in the world”. She went on to study architecture in Paris, Rome and Tokyo and even had a mild flirtation with the film world. Yahel credits Pina Bausch (German modern dance choreographer) and Jean Cocteau (French

realist painter and writer) as her biggest influences. “Bausch would teach dancers about concentrating on their space and using this to think about movement; I use the same idea with reflections”. She set up shop in Goa in the year 2000. Tucked away in Arpora, the studio is where Yahel lives, dreams and creates. Her spirit appears to be embedded in each piece that cries out to be caressed. She works with her hands to translate an inner and perhaps subconscious image into a sculpture. “I want my work to make people dream”. These visual masterpieces erupt with energy and drama, demanding an instant reaction. Her work is a favourite among private collectors and well known architects across the globe. Why the love affair with cutup mirrors? “Because you can’t really see yourself which is good as I don’t think I’m that interesting; rather you’re able to view the things around, the tree, the garden, which is more fun”. She’s also attracted by their diverse effect, a play of light that almost seems like a form of dance, exploding on ceilings and walls much like a disco ball. The next elephant in the room is the skulls. This apparently is Chirinian’s vision of sadhus, with splashes of saffron thrown in to highlight the fact. “I envy people who are so simple and don’t need much from life”. Her grandmother, who survived a concentration camp, believed that religion is created by humans and God should be your only conscience. “We give ourselves too much importance”, explains Yahel. She then lets slip in a whisper, “I’ve been in three comas due to various accidents but never saw the light or anyone waiting for me. Voila, there is no afterlife!” We’re interrupted by her capable assistant Geeta, on a work-related matter and so, I ask about the local women she employs and trains – another hallmark of the Monsoon Heritage Studio. “It started with 2 girls who were having problems at home. I taught them how to file the mirrors and speak English and have also put some of their children through school.” Et what’s on the agenda for the future? “I’d love to explore the dynamic cities of Asia. It’s nice to be anonymous in a city though I always miss Goa when away. But I’m bad at taking a vacation, going on the beach or even taking time to sleep. Easy to be with but difficult to work with, c’est moi (that’s me)” Yahel quips. Yahel possesses an infectious energy that is as apparent in her persona as it is in her work. “Life in her goodness throws little flowers along our way in the form of wonderful surprises”, she tells me. A special musician who has trained with them, one of the finest violinists in the state, will give a unique performance on Sunday evening. The IFFI Hangover By Sheela Jaywant

urp. The feast of films is over and I am satiated. I had the stamina to watch an average of four films per day. There were chat-n-chai sessions, open forums and master-classes to attend in between, so I could learn what went into making a film. Getting tickets was a problem because the number of registered delegates was higher than the number of seats available. Some of those who had tickets for a particular show kindly didn’t show up so that the ticketless queue-standees could get in after the ticket-holders did. At 8:30 am the halls usually weren’t full, which, I suppose, isn’t surprising as movie watching isn’t exactly an early morning activity. Interestingly, some of the out-of-Goa delegates had managed to get bed-&-breakfast accommodation for as low as 100 bucks/night at places like Anjuna. But they didn’t get the time to visit the beaches or bars, so hectic was the IFFI schedule. Some selected the films based on the category: Master Strokes, Country of Focus, Cinema of the World, International Competition, among others. I chose based on screening timings and availably of seats. And I managed to see ALL the award-winners! If the easiest and best way to travel the world is through film-experiences, then I’ve done a ‘round-the-planet’ three times in ten days. For a couple of hours I shared the lives of people on different latitudes, longitudes, centuries. I cried with the Israeli officer (A Place In Heaven) when his status as national hero was shattered after forty years. His once heroic deed had become a ‘war crime’. In ‘Grigris’ I saw how African slum-dwellers survived. ‘When Evening Falls on Bucharest’ showed the other end of the economic spectrum. ‘Les Apaches’, ‘Hush, Girls Don’t Scream’, ‘When a Man Desires a Fifth Wife’ introduced me to cultures and people whilst I snuggled in a/c’d comfort The right here in Goa. Polish and German films covering the early 1900s fascinate me. That suddenness of change, of lifestyles and attitudes, can’t be matched even by the Internet revolution. In contrast to that seriousness, ‘Quai d’orsay’ was hilarious, poking fun at a French politician. We can do a dedicated festival if someone makes such comedies on Indian netas. Talking of food: the film ‘The Fifth Season’ was about famine. What if spring didn’t follow winter? Considering in India we have droughts and floods every alternate year, it wasn’t an unreal theme. Another familiar story was ‘The Promise’. Could have been a Bollywood idea: rich old man marries beautiful young woman. Poor but bright orphaned young man comes into their lives, to be separated for seven years. Rich man dies, young man returns, film over. The most memorable picture was ‘Stray Dogs’. Ten minutes per frame. No sound, no movement. Seriously thought I was in outer space. Remarkable, to have an audience of over five hundred people in deep slumber for over an hour. Well deserved rest for those like me, because “for the ten days of IFFI my true love said to me:…nine frozen dinners, eight snacksn-smoothies, seven kinds of popcorn… and some beers that came free.’ Yes, there were lots of glitches at IFFI this year, not the least of which being the long lines and the obvious disorganization of the organizers. And yes, I do feel like I have a hangover. And yet the IFFI is over, long may it live. Will now have to wait for another two months until the South Asia Film Festival happens in February. Until then, building up an appetite for viewing. Gurgle.

t was past eight O’clock where the night cast ghastly shadows. Fluffy, one of our cats stared suspiciously in the distance, refraining from licking her fish bones (given felines’ instinctual hunger for fishes, this was a sure sign of something seriously amiss). My eyes scouted for any movement in the shadows. Nothing! Could it be a rat or some other scavenger of the night? And then something moved. Rather slithered several inches forward. Oh yes! There it was… A poisonous viper! I am fully committed to women’s liberation, except for when it comes to reacting to creepy reptiles. My first phone

call was to hubby, who, working late at the office, promptly took matters into his own hands by putting them into someone else’s. He made a frantic call to a snake catcher whose number was fortunately saved in his contact list, thanks to his previous encounters with the reptilian creatures prior to our marriage…. Phew! The snake catcher was busy with another creepy call and our anxious summons meant a forty-five-minute ride for him. I had serious doubts this viper would be happy to luxuriate in the same spot for such a long time. Nor was I birdbrain enough to venture out on my own to keep track of its movements.

Kulkarni’s advice - Recommended First Aid protocol for snake bites • Reassure the victim who may be very anxious. • Immobilize the bitten limb with a splint or sling (any movement or muscular contraction increases absorption of venom into the bloodstream). • Consider pressure immobilization for bites by elapid snakes like the Indian Cobra, the Indian Krait or sea snakes, but not for viper bites. There is considerable debate about this technique, but using a local compression pad applied over the wound pressure bandaging of the entire limb can be very effective. • Avoid any interference with the bite wound as this may introduce infection, increase absorption of the venom and increase local bleeding. • The patient must be transported to a place where they can receive medical care (dispensary or hospital) as quickly, safely and comfortably as possible. Any movement, especially of the bitten limb, must be reduced to an absolute minimum to avoid increasing the systemic absorption of venom. • Remove watches/rings/other jewelry from the site of the bite and do note the time of the bite and sequence of symptoms. • If possible, the patient should not be allowed to walk and carried with the help of a stretcher or bed or sitting on a chair. • The best possible first aid for a venomous snake bite victim would be to rush him/her to the nearest hospital in the least possible time.

After all, I had grown up hearing that any contact with a viper’s urine would result in the rotting of my flesh (which, by the way, I’m very much attached to!) No more sighting of the viper after half an hour when I peeped through the backdoor. Sigh of relief! I cancelled the snake catcher’s visit. Ok, so the incident ended without the anticipated tragedy. Still, the whole thing got me wondering, would my flesh REALLY have rotted? I decided to educate myself on the topic. Nirmal Kulkarni, herpetologist and wildlife photographer, and a member of Goa State Wildlife Advisory Board says, “There is no one specific simple single rule for identifying a venomous snake, as many non-venomous ones have evolved to look like their venomous brethren. However, some (venomous snakes) can be recognized by their shape, size, color, behavior and sound they make when they are threatened.” He continues, “Venomous snakes (that can cause serious

harm) have a pair of enlarged teeth, the fangs, at the front of their upper jaw. These fangs contain a venom channel or groove, along which venom can be introduced deep into the tissues of their natural prey. If a human is bitten, venom is usually injected subcutaneously or intramuscularly. These species are Spectacled Cobra or Common Cobra, Russell’s Viper, Saw Scaled Viper, Common Krait, King Cobra, Pit Vipers.” Many popular beliefs about snakes run amok in our Goan villages. Surprise, surprise! Many are not true. Aaron Fernandes, a snake catcher based in Siolim says, “Local beliefs and misconceptions influence people’s reactions to them.” He points to one common myth is that female cobras can fly. “Cobras don’t have wings to fly,” he says. Another false notion, he continues, is that the Sand Boa, or Malun in the local parlance, has two heads. And yes, the belief that a Russell’s viper urine or mere touch can cause rotting of the flesh is just a myth, he says. A doctor who preferred to stay anonymous opines that panic is a bigger problem than venom. “It is best to stay calm when bitten and seek medical help at the Government hospitals where the anti-venom is available. All snakes are not poisonous. But laypeople assume that every snake is a venomous one and they will die from a non-venomous snake bite. People need to be armed with knowledge.” Nirmal Kulkarni says the most important thing is to get immediately medical help and avoid traditional remedies that medical science has proven to “be useless or even frankly dangerous.” He explains, “These methods include: making local incisions or pricks/ punctures at the site of the bite or in the bitten limb, attempts to suck the venom out of the wound, use of black ‘snake stones’, tying tight tourniquets around the limb, electric shock and even application of chemicals, herbs or ice packs.” “I have sadly seen many local people have great confidence in traditional treatments, but they must not be allowed to delay medical treatment.”
