By Goa Streets

f you’re hooked on hookas, or even if you’re not but still love an occasional drag, there’s now a hooka destination in Goa that’s well worth your while. This is for people who appreciate flavour and love to sit back and truly relax. If you’re an unabashed hooka aficionado like I am, you might be getting bored with some of the sameold same-old flavours that abound in the state. Happily for all of us HL’s (hooka lovers), the hooka lounge at The Clematis – the luxury resort just off the Candolim beach - does away with the boredom by offering unique and exciting hooka flavours, a poolside view and lip-smacking food.

The hooka lounge is built over two floors, with the ground level boasting a fabulous bar with tall chairs and the upper floor all set for lounging, with comfortable floor seating and an incredible view. Not just that, you can also order the hookah while dining or having drinks at Aqua Maritime or Ocean Bar and Grill. Here you can find exotic flavours like Bob Marley, BMW, Soex, Silver fox, guava and the regulars like Paan Ras, Bombay Paan Ras, Lemon, Mint, Double apple, chocolate and many more. 

Meet the dancing doctor By Selma Carvalho

By Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello

T

hey call him the dancing doctor. That’s because he sees patients by day as a homeopathic practitioner, and teaches his fellow Goans to dance by night (‘cept Sundays, when he grooves by day as well!). And what a dancer he is! Ask anyone in Goa who knows anything about dance instruction in the state, and Martin D’Costa’s name will inevitably come up. Put simply, he’s awesome. If your goal is to dance with grace and elegance, and to have fun while learning, this guy’s your man. And it’s not just because he’s a worldclass dancer. He also knows how to teach, and that’s way more than half the battle. The passion for dancing sprung up at the relatively late age of 32 years for Martin (he’s 42 now). He says, “I did not have a clue about dancing when I joined the medical field. It all started when I met Flossy.” His wife Flossy, a manager at HDFC Bank in Majorda, is his dancing partner. Martin and Flossy might be the only couple in India who have won both Latin (cha cha, rumba, samba, jive and pasodoble) and standard dances (waltz, foxtrot, quickstep, and Viennese waltz). They have been the gold medallists in Latin 5 dance category, Standard 5 dance category and Standard 5 dance category at All India National Dance Sport championship organized by All India Dance Sport Federation. With extensive participation in dance competitions in Orissa, Bihar, Delhi and Bangalore, this dancing couple also represented Goa at the Lusofonia Festival in Macau in 2013 and won second place. Martin and Flossy trained with the Thailand National champion Charlotte before they started their own dance academy. He says, “Once we learnt dancing, we realized that people hardly danced to music at weddings. People did not know the techniques. Starting a dance school was the only way to teach people great dancing.” That gave birth to their school Dance Illusions in 2006. Flossy and close friends lent their support to make this venture a huge success. Teaching social, international and American style ballroom dance to different age-groups of 9 to 60 years, Dr. Martin handles about 30 students in a batch. This dance school has done shows for New Year parties, Christmas parties, Herald Goa Food and Music Festival,

Grape Escapade, Fish Festival, Calangute Fete, Navelim Fete, Holiday Inn, Marriott hotel, Taj, and many others. Dr. Martin says, “Our shows have a specific theme and are tailor-made to meet the client’s needs. We cater to corporate and mass audience.” Dance classes are held at Mayfair Hotel (Panjim) on Wednesdays and Saturdays (7 to 9 pm), Don Bosco (Panjim) for special occasions (Valentine or Christmas, etc), BM Hall (Margao) on Mondays and Thursdays (7 to 9 pm) and Club Harmonia (Margao) on Sundays (10.30 am to 1.30 pm). Tuesdays and Fridays are reserved to teach dance to bridal couples at his place in Vasco. He enlightens me about his approach, “Teach the students new techniques in every class in simple and fun-loving ways. To begin with, I teach them basic weight transfer.” He chuckles, “A young boy once came up to me and said, ‘I have come for Dr. Martin’s class. Where is he?’ Perhaps, he was expecting an old man.” In 2007, he taught dance to prisoners at Fort Aguada and Sada Jail. Martin says, “Since all were men, we taught

them basics of waltz and Viennese waltz among others. It was a 10-day workshop. The prisoners liked the daily one-hour dance session that was held for them.” Sandip Soparrkar handed the Ballroom Icon of India Award in 2009 in Mumbai. Martin views dance champions Riccardo Cocchi and Yulia Zagoruychenko as his role models, admiring them for their expression and style of dancing.

Flossy and Martin’s parents have been a source of constant support and inspiration. His critics have helped him to hone his skills. He says, “Twice a year, we travel abroad to attend dance workshops and short-term training courses taught by World Champions. So far, we have participated in various courses held in Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, etc.” Martin suggests, “Although our Goans dance from their hearts, they need to improve their dance moves. Most feel that they know to dance. But dancing is like learning the piano. One requires years of practice!” He says, “I love to dance International Foxtrot. You feel that you are flying like a bird in the sky and nobody in India dances it. We were the first couple to do it.” In the past, Martin sang for the band Divine Rhythm for about a year. Currently, he also works for the Herald in the area of event management. “Pick up your dancing shoes and be up there! Say NO to drugs, drinks and smoking. Live life like there is no tomorrow. Enjoy the moment because tomorrow might never come,” advises Martin. In his true dancing spirit, he quips, “Dance is a magic pill that combats aging.” Despite a hectic schedule of juggling gym workouts, work, dance classes, spending time with his kid and seeing to patients, Dr. Martin says, “I see happiness in treating my patients and teaching dance to my students.” On the thorny subject of the efficacy of homeopathy (scientific studies show conclusively that these remedies are no more effective than a placebo, meaning that if you get better after taking one, you would have gotten better anyway), Martin stands his ground. "The very fact that homeopathy has helped many individuals from their suffering for more than 200 years through many noble hands of homeopathic physicians shows that homeopathy does work," he says. Nevermind about all that, I say. Just enjoy the groove, and let Martin and Flossy sweep you off your feet.  ______ • You can contact Martin D’Costa and his team on 9923472688/ 9823014397/ (0832) 2714818 • Twitter: @danceillusions • Website: https://danceillusions. wordpress.com/

Many things come to mind when you think of Pakistan. Religious strife. Benazir Bhutto. The Taliban. Military rule. The ghazal and the qawwali. But Goan Catholics? Indeed there was a time when migrating to Karachi, Pakistan seemed like just the thing to do for Goans in search of a better life. Call up Google maps, and you’ll see Karachi is not terribly far from Goa, just further up from Gujarat and not even as far as, say, New Delhi. Roman Catholic Goans in Karachi today number between 12,000 and 13,000 people, and they remain one of the most cohesive and fascinating communities comprising Pakistan’s 2.8 million Christians (about 1.6 percent of the country’s population). Below, author, columnist and Goa Diaspora expert Selma Carvalho gives us a brief history of the Goan community of Pakistan.

N

othing fascinates me more than turn-of-the-century Goan history for the sheer audacity, perseverance and intellectual vibrancy of its intrepid migrations. It is not a coincidence that the new arrivals went about doggedly building Catholic churches and parochial schools, for it is European Catholicism which ironically broke the stranglehold of the communal and replaced it with individualism, enabling migration. Driven by self-interest, Goans would venture far; the concept of community would no longer be bound to geography. Much like the Jewish diaspora, it would be held together by abstract notions of religion, culture and a curious Anglicisation. From Karachi comes a fascinating book, The Origin and Evolution of St. Lawrence’s Parish by Oswin Mascarenhas, which sheds light on the Goan migration to Pakistan, and the formation of Cincinnatus town and St. Lawrence’s parish. The Karachi diaspora predates that of East Africa by a good fifty years. By 1858, when Goans were just venturing into Zanzibar, the J. C Misquita bakery was already thriving at Saddar. The importance of Catholic bakeries and butcheries cannot be underestimated; they acted as general contractors for flour, bread, beef, vegetables and provisions to English settlements and cantonments. In a very

real sense, they were the vanguard of Goan migration. Eventually, every venture in the diaspora, be it the Goan club or the Goan business, was intimately linked to the Catholic church, thus creating a overlapping history. Mascarenhas traces the Goan settlement of what was then the Sindh to Sir Charles Napier, the beleaguered English general who, in 1842, had the unfortunate task of quelling rebellions on the northern frontier. ‘Accompanying the army,’ writes Mascarenhas, ‘were civilian officers and camp followers many of whom were also Catholic.’ This assumption bears out. The English were particularly fond of Goans as personal valets, given their ability to speak a smattering of languages. Sir Richard Burton, part of Napier’s contingent, tells us he started his army life in India with just ‘Salvador Soares, a handsome Goanese; a horse, in the shape of a dun-coloured Kattywar nag; a horsekeeper, a dog, a tent.’ But camp followers were not just made up of menials, for army personnel also needed medical and pastoral care. Goan doctors and priests attended to them in the most austere and perilous of places. By Mascarenhas’s account, midnineteenth century Karachi, then a bustling port and city, had about 2000 Catholics, flourishing under British patronage. A spry and moderately affluent

class of entrepreneurs, doctors and midlevel government employees emerged, allowing them to invest in private property. In February 1906, three gentlemen, A. N. Menezes, an engineer by profession, D. F. Faria and Caciano Villa Reis visited a piggery in the Garden Quarters, which belonged to a P. J. D’Mello. They found the adjoining land was up for sale. This was the genesis of what erroneously came to be known as Cincinnatus town after one Cincinnatus F. D’Abreo, who at the time was the assistant collector of customs. Although he was actively involved in the colonisation scheme, he had neither planned it nor conceived of it. Mascarenhas offers no compelling reason as to why a largely urban community would want to leave the cantonment area and take up residence on its outskirts, other than to seek more salubrious conditions. But perhaps a parallel can be drawn with similar planned ‘colonisations’, model towns or residential quarters, which the British encouraged in other parts of the empire, in the early 1900s, which effectively segregated populations. Cincinnatus town grew to be the abode of the moneyed, professional class who took pride in their homes; they ‘kept poultry and tended their gardens where they grew fruit trees and sowed beds of flowers.’

What’s interesting, is not just the cross-cultural exchanges that took place as a result of Goan migration but the very tangible manner in which Goans influenced the architectural landscape and husbandry of alien lands. Mascarenhas tells us that Goans of Pakistan kept in touch with ‘their roots in Goa,’ and on visits there brought back ‘seedlings and grafts.’ Their gardens bloomed with flowers and fruits like bananas, chikoos and custard-apples. It might seem strange to us now, given Pakistan’s conflicted contemporary history, the grim reality of its sectarian strife and the marginalisation of minority religions, that Goans opted to live in Pakistan postindependence. But there was a moment there, through the forties and fifties, when hope reigned, when businesses surged, and Catholics streamed in. Goans, literate and urbanised, took up positions in the newly formed government offices of this emerging nation; women joined the workforce, sometimes earning more than their husbands. The quiet sobriety of Christian values meant the Goan community continued doing what it had done best: tending to the disadvantaged, and building stellar educational and health care facilities. Pakistan’s Christian population has held steady for the past two decades at about 2.8 million people, but many of them feel alienated in a nation that has become increasingly theocratic. Karachi has five Goan-majority churches, and while the Goan population is now somewhat lower than its estimated peak of 15,000, the community’s numbers are more or less holding. As important, its members remain vibrant and hopeful. Their contributions to life in Karachi are unmistakable, even if too few of their countrymen see it. ___

he first thing you must know about Cube Gallery in the sleepy north Goan village of Moira is that it is eminently true to its namesake. Cubes form the basis of the stunning architecture of the home in which the gallery is based. Designed by Satinder “Sonny” Singh, who runs the gallery along with his highly talented wife Carolina Paez, the structure is one-of-a-kind in Goa. Seeing it at night, with its recessed lighting, cube atop cube and elegant landscaping, is rather extraordinary. The only thing that tops it, perhaps, is what you see when you walk inside. Cube Gallery provides a nurturing environment for artists and designers, encouraging them to learn and test new techniques, or fine tune old ones, giving art a new form. It has evolved into something of a hub, attracting people from around the country.

Sonny, as his friends call him, graduated in architecture and completed a Masters in Experimental Animation from CalArts in California. He returned to India in 2007, choosing to live in Goa, as he has fond memories of growing up in Vasco. His wife Carolina is a well-known fashion designer from Venezuela, who, like him, thrives on creative pursuits. “Goa attracts a lot of creative people from all over the country. I want to create a sense of aesthetics that can motivate people, an awareness to the art of everyday objects that we surround ourselves with,” says Sonny. This helps explain why the couple chose to curate the furniture exhibition “Art of Wood”, which previewed on 20th February. The show is inspired by the works of George Nakashima [1905-1990], a Japanese architect, sculptor and furniture maker who was among the great innovators among 20th century furniture designers. Exploring reproductions of Nakashima’s artistry, Sonny’s vocabulary captures the virtuosity of a deeply woven manifesto of art on furniture, revealing rather than interpreting the timeless. The furniture should not be viewed as mere physical manifestations, but also for the aweinspiring vision behind the work, translating people’s concern for efficiency into art with a utilitarian sensibility.

dramatize richness of grain movement with traditional detailing. The process is laborious, slow and intense, with the seasoned wood providing richness and intensity. Art of Wood is just one of the innovative shows curated by Cube Gallery. Recently, the exhibition “Artable” featured 11 Goa-based artists, transforming a series of white console tables into delightful works of art. Call it avant garde. Call it pushing the artistic envelope in Goa. Whatever you call it, it’s nice to have Cube Gallery in our midst. 

laissez-faire, with wicker sofas painted in aquamarine and buttery white linens and daybeds as a part of table settings, all shaded with a white muslin roof and wispy drapes. THE FOOD: The menu showcases world cuisine with a special focus on Mediterranean and European delicacies. Wood-fired pizza is a specialty here, while the grill serves up perfectly broiled meats and the day’s catch. For a pick-me-up, the Australian fine coffees and shakes are one-of-a-kind. THE PARTY VENUE: 3 Dance-floors on Multiple Levels | Indoor Sound-proof Nightclub | Covered Bar & Open-Air Lounge | Pool w/ Bar & Sunbeds THE LOUNGE BAR: The lounge bar at Waters is an outdoor deck below the restaurant. Carrying forward the design theme of the space, lavish loungers in aquamarine, plush white leather sofas and daybeds make for a relaxed ambiance, ideal to enjoy a drink while soaking in the sunset. THE INDOOR NIGHTCLUB: The indoor glass-walled nightclub accommodates upto 50 guests.
