From page 3 air 18,000 sq. ft with a swimming pool area in the centre & seating all around. Opening the festival on Nov. 30 will be young jazz musicians from Goa. This is followed by PLAISTOW- the young experimental & dynamic jazz trio from Switzerland revisiting the classical line-up – piano, bass, drums – from top to bottom, free from any stylistic constraint. The band’s music, entirely acoustic, is constantly evolving. The final act for the night is the one and only YURI HONING - one of Holland’s most important saxophone players, having toured over 70 countries and with a discography of almost 30 titles. Day 2 will feature the Elvis lobo project – the Goa Sound feat: Elvis on Guitar, Victor Netesov on Trumpet, Joe Ferrao on Bass, and Bosco D’souza on drums. Also performing will be Derek Julian, the Living Legend Guitar from Pune.

Following that is the one and only HFT, the living legends of jazz. Capping the festival is the headline act, Erik Truffaz. He is one of the most famous European jazz trumpet players, having released 17 critically acclaimed albums with Blue Note Records and getting standing ovations worldwide. The festival closes with a felicitation of jazz musicians from Goa & around the country (UNSUNG HEREOS OF JAZZ). The festival is completely crowd funded so be there to SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL JAZZ LIVE FESTIVAL IN GOA. Limited passes! 6  The Lowdown Steven Gutkin, the venture’s chief mentor, is an award-winning journalist who has reported from some two dozen countries in the Middle East, Asia, Africa and the Americas. An international newsman for 25 years, Steven served as Bureau Chief with the Associated Press, the world’s largest news gathering organization, in Israel and Venezuela, as well as AP’s Chief of Southeast Asia Services in Singapore and Indonesia, and Senior Editor in the US. Steven covered the rise and fall of the Medellin and Cali cocaine cartels, rode into Kabul with a triumphant northern alliance and directed coverage of wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Gaza and Lebanon. The Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar was caught because he lingered on the phone with his son to answer Steven’s questions, and the cops traced the call. Steven covered the killing of Daniel Pearl in Pakistan, hurricanes in Puerto Rico and Mexico, the death of Yasser Arafat, a coup in Fiji and the rise to power of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. Steven has also worked for the New York Times, the Washington Post, Newsweek and CBS Radio.

Marisha Dutt, Publisher and Editor of Goa Streets, is a former Marketing and Advertising Manager with The Wall Street Journal in Singapore. She took a break from work to raise her two boys in Indonesia, Israel and the United States. She has a Masters Degree in Marketing from The University of Strathclyde in the UK and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Relations. She was born in Assam, India and spent her early years on a tea plantation overlooking a pristine wildlife sanctuary. When she was 10, she and her family moved to Calcutta, where Marisha had the privilege of working alongside Mother Teresa. Later the family moved to Goa. Marisha and Steven were married 11 years ago on the Candolim beach.

Ananda Krishna, Photographer, turned hopefully towards the camera early in life. With an abundance of knowledge and overwhelmed by his brilliant teachers in Light and Life Academy, Ooty, Ananda (last ‘a’ is silent) set out knowing the ‘how’s’ but not the ‘why’s’ of a photograph. It took a good amount of drifting on the road and dabbling with shooting advertisements, a film, weddings, events, exhibitions, copywriting and even selling booze to finally understand where the WHY really matters for him – photojournalism.

Sneha Rodrigues – Business Development Manager. Sneha has a background in hospitality and online marketing, having worked for Club Mahindra as Marketing Manager and C2C, a medical tourism company in Kuwait, as Business Development Manager. She’s a foodie with a blog on poetry, and her best kept secret is that she has a fabulous singing voice that she puts to good use around Goa.

Nilesh Shetgaonkar, Administrative Assistant, is a happy-go-lucky Morjim native who prides himself on living life to the fullest. He spent seven years in Dubai and loves football, cricket and trivia. Radhika Naik – Editorial Assistant. A Mapusa resident, Radhika enjoys siestas and, when awake, spending time with family. She was always a big fan of the news and is thrilled to be part of that world today. Music with a slow tempo is her favourite playlist.

Selvan Gounder – Head of Distribution and Circulation. An energetic individual hailing from Chimbel, Selvan is a big fan of cricket and believes in keeping life simple. Victor Pereira– Distribution Team. Currently lives in Cavellossim after spending some time in New Delhi and Kerala. Victor gets a kick out of fidgeting with electrical equipment, and his claim to fame in the Goa Streets office is his winning combination of helpfulness and humility.

Vijay Gadekar– Distribution Team. Aside from being very handy in all things mechanical, Vijay is a big fan of football with an equal passion for quality beach time. Kunda Salkar – Office Assistant. A resident of Mapusa, Kunda goes through life with a permanent, and contagious, smile on her face. And it’s not just her delicious cooking that makes others smile.

The Lowdown When you read this issue’s cover story on Oliver Sean, it’s worth asking what’s really behind the international success of this fabulous Goan rock artist? There’s a number of factors involved, but if you read the story, you will see that Oliver’s been at this since he was 11 years old. It’s fair to assume that Oliver was a child prodigy, and when prodigies are nurtured and given the right opportunities, this is the result you can expect: Grammy and MTV Award nominations, international acclaim, accolades of every kind. Is there a lesson there for all the other prodigies of Goa? Goa Streets is happy to be media partner for content of the 44th International Film Festival of India, and we hope you enjoy Sheela Jaywant’s sassy preview of the event in this edition, plus Perin Ilavia’s review of a special art exhibit commemorating 100 years of Indian cinema. Speaking of partnerships, we’re also media partners for the International Jazz Live Festival Goa. Be sure to read our story on the event in this issue. There’s lots more to sink your teeth into on these pages, including our comprehensive event/party/ leisure listings, our restaurant reviews and Neena Jhanjee’s piece on her unusual travel venture designed for adventurous ladies. We’d also like to draw your attention to our story on Nigerians in Goa. When we started Goa Streets, we promised that we’d be providing out-of-the-box coverage not done by others. This is a perfect example of what we meant by that promise. We hope you appreciate the story and the important point it makes about the dignity of all people. Sending out warm wishes to all our readers! The Goa Streets Team

N

ow here’s a refreshing tidbit – a restaurant that specializes in a single cuisine! And that this particular single cuisine happens to be Japanese puts Sakana in a league of its own in Goa. That it also happens to be very good Japanese food is the icing on this Japanese cake. On a recent evening, we dined at Sakana and sampled a lovely selection of sushi rolls, sashimi and salads. One of the night’s specials was something called Hot Kingfish Sashimi, which seemed to be a contradiction in terms, for wouldn’t heating sashimi make it sashimi no more? (For all those Japanese food virgins out

there, sashimi, like sushi, is raw fish). Turns out it’s not the sashimi that’s hot, but the oil that tops it, and in reality it’s not very hot at all, neither fire nor spice wise. But was it good? Yes indeed! Next came another special of the night, the Lemon Fish Salad, which was tangy, hearty and delicious. The best, it turns out, was yet to come: the Salmon Lover Roll, featuring smoked salmon and avocado. Sakana, the brainchild of Indian-Israeli Eliko and his Japanese wife Mali, boasts a number of USP’s, not the least significant of which is its extremely inviting interiors situated in a well-travelled section of the Anjuna-

100 Pillows Café

For Breakfast, Burgers, Steaks and Foodie Cravings By Goa Streets

T

his inviting little café on the Arpora-Baga Road has just opened but looks likely to make a splash on the Goan culinary scene. Except for a small section featuring the stunning experimental paintings of Arnaz Mistry, the restaurant is outdoors – a quiet, quaint setting along the Baga River. What makes 100 Pillows Café rather extraordinary is the ingredients and the preparation. You can call it a burger joint, but note that the burgers are cheese stuffed and served with thrice cooked French Fries (Streets’ recommendation: order the big 100 Pillows Café burger stuffed with 3 cheese and topped with fried eggs and bacon). You could also call it a steak joint, with a steak that happens to be coated with the wonderfully satisfying Jack Daniel Barbecue sauce (there are six different kinds of sauces to choose from). On a recent afternoon, we sampled both the burgers and the steaks and came away very happy. As much as the focus might be on burgers and steaks, it’s fair to say the salads are an equal draw. Speaking of

appealing ingredients, in a salad here you can expect fresh fruit, avocado, praline and feta, among other goodies. One of the biggest hits at our table was the bacon jam expertly prepared by chef/owner Cherry Shethia and her team. It’s one of those foods you pop into your mouth and are instantly transported. There

Vagator beach belt. Another happy USP: when you order an alcoholic beverage, a ‘small’ is 50 CC and a ‘large’ is 100 CC. That’s substantially more than what’s offered at pretty much any other restaurant in the state, and there’s no extra charge for it. If you consider the quality of the food – which also includes a wide variety of meat and veg Udon noodle dishes, Gyozas (Japanese-style momos) and various creative variations on tofu – and the extremely reasonable prices, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Sakana was packed on the recent Monday night we visited. Yes, you read right. Sakana was packed on a Monday – and for good reason. • The Food: Lovely Japanese food in Vagator • The Service: Prompt and friendly • The Prices: Sushi rolls are all under Rs 300. Most expensive dish is the Mabo Tofu Beef Udon, at Rs 400 • Where: Chapora Road, Vagator (near Anjuna Petrol Pump) • (+91) 9890135502

are lots of other offerings, from grilled cheese Goan pao to beer bread to Eggs Benedict to a masala omelette to a typical American BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich). There’s also a fully stocked bar and lots of tasty desserts. 100 Pillows Café is definitely worth a visit! • The Food: Hard to beat for steaks, burgers and salads • The Service: Personalized, owner supervised • The Prices: Burgers range from Rs 200 to Rs 300. Most expensive steak is Rs 390. Won’t break the bank. • Where: Baga-Arpora Road, near Royal Goan Beach Club. • Phone: +91 9767212499

The International Film Festival of India Goa Streets is Media Partner for Content for the 44th International Film Festival of India, one of the world’s premier cinema events. Below, writer Sheela Jaywant gives us a thoughtful preview of what to expect at this year’s IFFI.

Recipient of Lifetime Achievement Award Waheeda Rahman (left) with Rani Mukharjee

I

’m fascinated by the fairy lights on the trees and lamp-posts along DB Marg, the old Goa Medical College building (the name has stuck even though the ‘ownership’ is now with the ESG, Entertainment Society of Goa) and the contrasting darkness of the Mandovi flowing behind the Kala Academy. Panjim is spruced up for the International Film Festival of India. For a registration fee of Rs 300 (less than the price of a book), one can see 328 films from 75 countries. 171 are foreign, 157 Indian (of these 18 are from the chuppa rustom North-Eastern Indian states like Manipur). New entrants include East Timor, Latvia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Haiti, Bhutan, Nepal and others. We’re getting modern: 80% of the films are in digital format. The opening ceremony, glitzy and crowded, in the large temporary ‘hangar’ at Campal on Wednesday, 20 November, went off without snarling traffic or bombblasts. Considering the Goa police had to handle it without help from the Central Security Forces, not bad, not bad. Till last year, the ESG had allowed stalls to sell food, Goan ‘art’, shiny balloons, squeaky toys, etc on the footpath opposite the Old GMC. This year, the mess will be transferred inside that lovely green Campal Park. The junta that will therefore not obstruct the traffic will still be able to see the evening “cultural shows” (easier understood as music and dance performances) on the stage

that has been constructed opposite the GMC. Another stage is inside the Inox complex and the third inside the hangar at Campal. South Goans needn’t feel left out. Ravindra Bhavan in Margao will have performances, too. If it’s true that there are approximately ten thousand registrations for the IFFI, all four venues together won’t suffice. The good news is that many don’t turn up. At the opening ceremony, amidst the on-stage yack-yack and wick-lighting, Waheeda Rahman received the IFFI Centenary Award. What could one expect from her? Elegance? Pizzazz? She disappointed none. Best of all was Birju Maharaj and Shashwati Sen’s troupe doing kathak to Nishat Khan’s live sitarvaadan and relevant Bollywood songs: mohe panghat pe nandal, thaade rahiyo ho baakiya, and a song in Tamil. Czech Film Director Jiri Menzel got the Lifetime Achievement Award. Academy Award winning Hollywood actress Susan Sarandon was the chief guest. She confessed that she hadn’t seen Indian films, but was keen on seeing “what made people cry and laugh in other countries”. Interestingly, she shared the stage with critically acclaimed Iranian (!) producerdirector Majid Majidi and Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland. Michelle Yeoh will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony on November 30. Didn’t figure out why hosts Rajat Kapoor and Suhasini Mani Ratnam thought Asha Bhonsale was the ‘greatest

Indian singer’, but who’m I to disagree… I’ve made some queue friends at IFFI. They come from Assam/ Chennai/ Chandigarh/ Chattisgarh and elsewhere. To them, Goa isn’t about beaches, seafood, churches or feni. Just IFFI. We discuss what we’re going to see in the coming week: The opening Czech comedy-drama, ‘The Don Juans’ needs to be seen again. The closing film, ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ directed by Justin Chadwick and written by William Nicholson can’t be missed. Nor the fifteen films vying for the Peacock Awards. Apu’s Song by Kaushik Ganguly and The Coffin Maker by Veena Bakshi have been selected in the International Competition section. Apu’s Song is a reallife story inspired by Subir Banerjee, the child actor who played the iconic role of Apu in Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali. The film released theatrically in August 1955. Subir never became a part of any film again in his entire life. On his way to receive an award in a film festival in Germany, he reminisces about his life. The Coffin Maker by Veena Bakshi is set in a small village in Goa. It tells the story of Anton Gomes (Naseeruddin Shah) who comes from a family of accomplished carpenters and takes up coffin-making when difficult circumstances render him jobless and penniless. He is cynical and disillusioned till one day Death challenges his life. The International Competition Jury will be chaired by filmmaker Goran Paskaljevic

(Serbia). Others on the Jury are actor Victor Banerjee (India) and filmmakers Prasanna Vithanage (Sri Lanka), Claire Denis (France) and Atiq Rahimi (Afghanistan). The Indian Panorama has sixteen non-feature and twenty-six feature films. Besides the opening Malayalam film Kanyaka Talkies, the two on my list are: ‘23 Winters’, a bilingual film in Kashmiri and Hindi by Rajesh S Jala, and ‘Shepherds of Paradise’ in Kashmiri, Gojri and Urdu by Raja Shabir Khan. The Film Festival director Shankar Mohan had said that about 180 would be foreign movies. “There will also be a section dedicated to Konkani cinema.” Aribam Syam Sharma’s National Award winning documentary film “Manipuri Pony” explores the animal’s contribution to Manipuri culture and to the game of Polo. Visitors from Andhra Pradesh are in for a treat: in the special panorama section, are films made by Dr. A N Rao (Devadasu, 1953) and Dr. D Rama Naidu (Prem Nagar, 1971). Films of and by Dada Saheb Phalke awardees who are alive will attract serious cinephiles. In the ‘Fine Musicals Of Indian Cinema’ section, three of K Vishwanath’s movies will be screened: ‘Sankarabharanam’, ‘Sagara Sangamam’ and ‘Sapta Padi’. The Masterstrokes section includes ‘The Grand Beauty’, ‘A Touch of Sin’ and ‘Stray Dogs’. The Festival Kaleidoscope has favourites of the year like ‘Blue is the Warmest Color’, ‘Ilo Ilo’, ‘Only God Forgives’ and ‘The Past’. Pan Nalin’s ‘Faith Connections’ and Atiq Rahimi’s ‘The Patience Stone’ have made it to The Soul of Asia section. One sleeps through some boring ones. Last year, Mr Adoor Gopalakrishnan said ‘watching bad films helps filmmakers learn what to avoid’, mia comprehenda. I see them all.

Mama, why is it iffi if it’s happening for sure?

14  Cover Story

The Story of Oliver Sean Oliver Sean was 11 years old when he wrote ‘Music is My Life’. It was a love song. And yes, it was the start of a lifetime love affair with music. Of course this is not just about Oliver’s love for music, but also his fans’ love for HIS music. Oliver spent much of his youth playing local gigs around Goa, and now he’s become nothing short of an international rock sensation. Grammy Award nominee, recipient of an MTV Europe Music Awards nomination and nominated for the A V Max International Album of the Year, it’s fair to say that Oliver is one of the most celebrated musicians ever to rise from Goan soil. Streets’ Fransisca Rodrigues recently caught up with him to learn more about his life and his music. When he speaks, it’s clear that he’s more than a musician. Oliver Sean is deep water.

“M

usic has been an integral part of me. It’s not something that I had to make an effort to get into. To me it was like breathing. No music, no Oliver,” he explains. Most of Oliver’s songs are about love. Ask him about that and he says, “I think I’ve always associated music and love as the same thing. Music is love and love is music. And of course I write songs for love, which is the universal hit factor for the best songs in the world.” Besides winning the MTV nomination for his song ‘So Good’ in 2012 and the A V Max International Album of the Year nomination for ‘I Like It’ in 2003, he has been accepted into the National Academy of Recording Arts

Oliver Sean during his recent performance

and Sciences as a voting member for the prestigious Grammy Awards. That, he says, “has been a dream” since he was 10 years old. His songs and music videos have now been nominated for the Grammy Awards three years in a row. But he is modest about his achievements. “Nominations and awards are made to celebrate good music or give recognition for good music. However, a musician should not make music for the sole purpose of accolades - the accolades come if you are true to your music. Some of the awards I’ve been nominated for have been a great source of pride to me. It gives me a feeling of love from fans and the industry towards me, no matter how big or small the award or nomination. At the moment of receiving the news I feel the same incredible gratitude each and every time, which is why I know the love affair is still going strong,” he says with a wink. He goes on, “Every song I have written has something personal and is a part of me, a very personal part of me. That’s why my fans mean so much to me - they share a deep connection with a very personal part of me - my songs. And THAT is the recognition I always crave for - my fans’ adoration, nothing compares to that.” Oliver’s music can best be described as pop with contemporary undertones. He plays the guitar, bass, keyboard and drums, but it’s his distinctive percussive guitar style that’s helped propel him to fame – that, along with his voice, of course. Oliver has a Goan/Portuguese/ Italian lineage, and he grew up in Goa, Dubai and the UK. All of these influences can be heard in his music. The French authorities were so impressed with his song The Libran Mind that they used it as part of their national tourism campaign. The song was very different from the music Oliver usually composes. He explains, “This was instrumental and was in the ‘chillout’

or ‘lounge’ feel, which was all the rage at the time with films like The Beach. I remember the producer of the film saying he couldn’t believe how fantastic the piece was and that the musical style was completely unexpected from what they were expecting from me.” Oliver often incorporates Indian elements in his music like the use of the tabla. “My experimentation with tablas and sitar and other Arabic and world instruments as well as dabbling in other genres has been part of my music arrangements from the time I got into a professional studio when I was 15 years old.” His first hit song ‘I Like It’ featured tablas, but Oliver puts on no airs about the significance. “My fans loved it and even though it was unexpected it didn’t make the song ‘fusion’ or ‘experimental’. It just made the song fun! So that’s why I use these wonderful instruments sometimes in my music – it’s fun. A fun journey my fans take with me.” Oliver has also made music for Bollywood. “I did two major Hindi projects. The first was a Hindi pop album called ‘Darna Chod Do’ which did really well and had two music videos on various channels and TV specials on some of the music channels. The remix video went on to be an MTV exclusive featured video. The song instrumentation and production was similar to my English songs and the songs were unlike any Hindi tracks out at the time. After this I also took on a Bollywood Hindi movie project as a music director and composed the music/songs for a film called ‘Cutting Chai’. The film also featured me in the movie at the start of the film singing one of the main songs. I had a super time doing this but it’s just a one off thing in my career. As I said - I love experimenting and this was one such experiment. And besides - my Hindi is not really that great.” Oliver writes and composes all of his

He recalls, “I remember being in a studio as a 15 year old kid recording my first demo of 4 songs and I was next to the engineer going ‘shouldn’t we do this? And shouldn’t we change that setting?” he laughs. “I then went ahead and set up my own recording studio a few months later.” Now in his 30’s, he says starting his own record label WOA was the best thing he’s done. “I didn’t want to wait around for some guy in a suit to decide on a record deal for me and dictate terms to me ... As a young kid you believe that you can take on the world and do anything you want to - I had this attitude then and I still have it.” He says that at 18 years old he worked out of

his bedroom to set up deals with major distributors and PR arrangements with radio and TV. If you believe in yourself, he says, the “universe comes together to give you what you really want and believe in.”

Today, WOA International comprises a label, studio, a film production and promotion company, a syndicated radio show and a weekly TV show. It also recently got into publishing. Oliver, who besides music loves computers and bikes, recently shifted to London. “I am now expanding further with my very first live music club in the UK. The main reason for my move to the UK is to make it easier for me to travel to all parts of the world on my tours and for my company work.” But Goa will always be his home away from home. “My fans in Goa will always have me coming down to be with them.” Oliver credits his mom for his success. “To me my Mom is God. The biggest

hero in my life is my mother. As a single mother she has singlehandedly raised me with absolutely no help from anyone and whatever I am today is solely because of her. No question about that.” Currently he is working on various projects. “I am starting work on my new music video for my single ‘(are we) Doing That’, that song was released in New York in August. We are also in the process of starting my new club ‘The Oliver Sean Rock Lounge’ which is keeping us extremely busy and are also getting ready to organise a very special Christmas show which WOA Entertainment UK will be organising in Leicester. The show will feature the Oliver Sean Band performing along with several other international artists.” On a parting note, we ask him what he would advise those wishing to take music as a career. “Believe in yourself! And don’t let others bring you down. If you really want to make music your life, don’t get into it half hearted - give it everything. Music is not a JOB or a BUSINESS - music is a part of your life, it is your life.”  ____ To see and hear Oliver Sean perform, log onto www.goastreets.com.

elcome to Bioscope, a highly notable art exhibit paying tribute to 100 years of Indian cinema. That it opened this past week, just a few days before the 44th International Film Festival of India, was certainly no coincidence. Organized by Nayna Bandekar and Apurva Kulkarni at the Maquinez Palace, the exhibit focuses on yes, bioscopes, which were hand cranked machines that served as the first cinema projectors. The event was inaugurated on Nov. 16 by Entertainment Society of Goa Chairman Vishnu Wagh, with Indian screenwriter and director Sayeed Akhtar Mirza as Guest of Honour. The thematic exhibition features works by four artists of Goa, reconstructing a kaleidoscopic memory of old and recent movies, conceived by Apurva who curated the show, with Nayna providing vital logistical support. Artist Rajeshree Thakker focused on movies where the actors have double roles. She moves away from virtual forms to interactive works in mix media on wood and canvas, with traditional wooden game boxes, a frame with an interactive window with movable slats stimulating a Venetian blind. She alternately reveals faces of

two men in the movie Doosar Adami, another with a scroll inserted in a niche in the painting and scenes from the 1938 movie Tukaram and the movie Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyo Aata Hai. Her work also features portraitures of contemporary movie stars, placed in a panel with vibrant backgrounds with intricate designs, script and titles suggesting pop art. Viraj, distinguished for his printmaking and innovative body of works, draws the viewer’s attention to portraiture in monochrome images of actors of yesteryears. He also features a

sequence from Tukaram, but the central focus is on the villains, who he says “are equally important, intelligent and talented as the hero. My theme here is portraying the ‘grotesque’”. There are graphite heads attached with a string to bodies painted in watercolour and linear bodies with photographed heads. The first movie he saw as child was Sholay. The villain Gabbar Singh impacted him. In this case, the “grotesque” is projected in a sculpture of a foot on a pedestal. In another display inspired by the movie Do Aankhe Bara Hath, the installations are encased in a spider’s web woven in thread, simulating ‘real life webs’ shimmering when sunlight hits them.

The only artist to project Malayalam and Marathi along with Hindi cinema was Praveen Naik. His representations feature the movies Mother India, Bandit Queen, Black, Eliyapatnam (the Rat Trap), Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyo Aata Hai and Trikal. The visual dexterity is an analytical collage of the ‘reel’ and ‘real’ world of Praveen Naik himself. He uses fabric and architectural elements, exploring the suggestive interplay and cryptic reticence of images. Vasudev Shetye focuses on movies shot in Goa, with Goan themes. Albert Pinto and Trikal feature in his work along with Zoey and Avtar. He chronicles metaphors in an age of decadence, juxtaposing and super imposing figures, working in mix media on paper and canvas. There are portraits of actors draped in intricate designed garments, blending unusual hues and texture, linking patterns. The large format works make you feel like you’re viewing them on a 16 mm screen. The work titled Tribute to Jiah Khan (whose cause of death is under dispute) provokes deliberation. The aesthetic and contemporary language of the artists’ imagery is refreshing, as they approach ideals of the past and modernistic distortion, provoking thoughtful interaction with the audience. In conversation with Mr. Wagh, he opines, “In the twenty years that I have seen Goan artists, I think they have now come into their own. This is an admirable array of works, and being on

exhibit during IFFI, it’s an appropriate theme, ensuring a cross section of viewers.” Mr. Mirza, who won an award for Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyo Aata Hai, stated, “It’s incredible how the Indian cinema which is among the oldest in Eastern countries, has survived the onslaught of Hollywood movies, when countries around the world crumbled, we go on - undoubtedly absorbing nuances of Hollywood, and staying abreast of changing times and mindsets of ‘the generation now’, continue engaging audiences around the world.” Ms. Nayna Bandekar affirmed she was “totally satisfied with the creative projection of works which were at par with international standards.” _____ On view till 30th November at Maquinez PlacePanjim.

f you read the Facebook feeds and listen to the living room discussions in Goa, it’s easy to get the impression that every Nigerian national in the state is a drug trafficking gangster. The perception has hit fever pitch following the Oct. 31 clash on the NH17 Highway in Porvorim between Goans and Nigerians angered over the murder of one of their own the previous night. Streets decided to take a closer look at the Nigerians of Goa in the wake of all the trouble. Perhaps it should come as no surprise that, like every other community on the planet, there are both good and bad in the lot. Nigerians’ reputation for involvement in the drug trade is certainly not without reason. But generalizing about the entire group is fraught with pitfalls. Case in point: Obafemi TafawaBankole. A former student of the Loyola Jesuit College in Abuja, Nigeria, he first came to Goa as a tourist years ago and he liked it enough to stay and set up a business here. “When I first came here, I was impressed with your hospitality. Your people are very loving and caring. They are kind. I got good support for my garment and false hair business from local people. Many Nigerians do false hair business in India. In India we buy hair from hairdressers and export it to African countries. We buy garments as well,” Obafemi said, eager to stress that not all Nigerians in Goa are involved in drugs. “Some Nigerian do drugs, not all. Just as some Indians do drugs and not all Indians. It’s very upsetting that Nigerians are being targeted and treated like dirt in your beautiful state,” he said. Before the Oct. 31 incident, an estimated 300 Nigerians resided in Goa. That number is believed to have now been cut in half, as many have fled in the face of rising hostility. Those still here are doing their best to keep a low profile while hoping tensions will ease. Jonathan Adakole is example of a decent, law-abiding Nigerian who wants to come to Goa but now finds himself unable to do so. A football coach by

Jerry Karpeh (from Sporting) celebrates after scoring a goal against Dempo profession, he is wanted at the Brasil Futebol Academia in Goa to coach young Goan boys the tricks of the game. Speaking from Lagos in Nigeria where he currently is awaiting his Indian visa, Adakole stressed his business was football and that alone. “I have heard of this trouble between Indians and Nigerians,” he said, adding that he’s not sure when or if he’ll be able to come. “I’m hoping to be there in Goa very soon and can’t wait to be teaching young boys.” Goans and Nigerians have a long history of shared football experiences going back more than two decades, with players from Nigeria being the strikers of many top Goan clubs such as Dempo, Salgaocars and Sporting Clube de Goa. A good example is Jerry Karpeh, a Nigerian who now plays for the Sporting Clube de Goa. In fact, Sporting owes much of its meteoric rise to two Nigerians, Dudu Omagbemi, a striker, and Clifford Chukwuma, a football coach. From being a 2nd Division club in the Goa leagues it is today one of the top clubs of the country. Ranti Martins, another Nigerian player now with United Sports Club, played for Dempo Sports Club in Goa for many years, starting when he was just 18. Now married and with three kids, he stays in Kolkata with his family. Many of those still in Goa, however,

have faced harrowing experiences since the Porvorim incident. Chioma Ghansoli, a 23-year-old Nigerian in Goa for a holiday, said that she and her friends were kicked out of their guest house and found themselves forced to sleep on the beach. She stated repeatedly, and convincingly, that neither she nor any of her friends take, sell or have anything else to do with narcotics. “We want to stay here and stay here peacefully. We’re black, it doesn’t mean we are not God’s children and that we should be treated like some pagans or something,” Ghansoli told me. “There are many of us who are just down on a holiday and Nigerians are not bad people.” In the course of my research for this article, I spoke to quite a few Nigerians and I cannot say with any certainty that all of them are law abiding. All, however, spoke of mistreatment in the wake of the Oct. 31 clash. A man who identified himself as John Okeke told me that he also found himself homeless after the incident. “If you are black, there is no place for you,” John said. He and his friend Wisdom spoke to me in front of the Parra panchayat. The glances of the passersby and those who hung around the busiest area of the agrarian village were unmistakable. It’s that feeling you get when you know you are being watched.

I met John and Wisdom on the evening of November 15, a good two weeks after the incident. I asked them if they felt uncomfortable as they looked at me through dark glasses. “The landlords have put a lock on the accommodation where we were staying. In some cases the bags are locked inside. In other cases the bags have been kept outside,” John said. “We need help from our government. We are stranded in Goa now. We are turned away by taxi drivers, by grocery store owners and by other shops. If we want to travel or to even get food for ourselves, we cannot get it,” John said. I asked the two what they do for a living, but they tried to avoid the question (I don’t rule out that these two might be involved in illicit activities). Barely a day after I met him, a Nigerian was roughed up by a group of locals at Calangute after he got into an altercation with a domestic tourist over a minor road accident. Another surprise. Goans, it turns out, aren’t the only ones upset over the behaviour of the Nigerians on NH17. Chioma Ghansoli, the 23-year-old Nigerian holiday maker, was equally critical of her compatriots. “It was not right for them to be brandishing knives the way they did. If they had some issue they should have taken it up with the local authorities in an amicable way,” she said.

Calling All Divas Adventure and passion for the ladies By Neena Jhanjee

I

’m a lover of books, a passionate travel buff and a nomad at heart. When I was a child I remember dreaming of having fanciful adventures in distant lands. The books I read transported me to places I’d never been to, but one day wanted to discover. I began travelling for real when I was in college. I was studying history and archaeology then, and had realised that my love for travel was not a fleeting infatuation, but a lifelong passion. However, a busy and stressful career in finance, banking and private equity meant I was landlocked and grounded for nearly thirteen years. While I did get to see the world -- from Cambodia and Italy to France and Maldives -- I knew that I wanted to do more with my love for travel than going on personal vacations and work trips. This year, I finally gathered enough courage and momentum to break out of the rigors of a corporate career, let my itchy, restless feet take over and returned to my one great love, travel. On March 8 this year, which happens to be International Women’s Day, I launched my dream venture, Diva Odysseys, a bespoke, luxury tour operator offering thematic group vacations exclusively for solo women travellers. We specifically cater to urban Indian women who want to travel, but don’t have the right company to do so, and don’t particularly want to travel alone. Diva Odysseys offers them a safe and fun platform to take off on exciting, life-changing journeys to some of the most beautiful locations around the world with small groups of discerning and like-minded female travellers. I run Diva Odysseys out of Goa. Since it is an e-commerce portal, where I stay doesn’t play much of a role in its workings and I have the luxury of setting

up base anywhere. I have chosen Goa for obvious reasons: it’s paradise and I love living here. Although I am Punjabi by birth, I am completely Goan at heart! I’ve often been asked what sets Diva Odysseys apart from the gazillion other travel tour operators out there. I believe that we stand out with our unique emphasis on experiential getaways rather than staid destinationbased holiday packages. While our vacations are set in some of the most intriguing locations across the world, they are all about engaging with a place beyond the usual touristy trappings

and associations and through a host of locally relevant activities featuring a mix of luxury, stimulation, adventure and cultural flavour. Most operators offer ‘drive-by’ tours to popular tourist spots but this does not allow you to unravel the true essence of the place. Instead, our vacations let travellers experience the destination through a range of rare and quintessentially local experiences, be they gastronomic, wellness-based

cultural or adventurous. All of this is offered in a wellpaced, luxurious and carefully curated environment with an experienced local guide in tow and more importantly, in the company of spirited travel companions. Our current assortment of hand-picked, thematic tours includes a luxury spa holiday in Ubud, Bali, cooking lessons in France, a food and wine holiday in the vineyards of Australia, a trip through the game parks of Tanzania, an epicurean getaway winding through the picturesque islands along the Amalfi Coast in Italy and a trek through a prehistoric island in Bali to spot the elusive komodo dragon, among several others. At the heart of all our Signature Odysseys is the idea of promoting female bonding and a shared sense of camaraderie among women with a similar wavelength. Through Diva Odysseys, I would like to bring together

women who love to travel and who are connoisseurs of life, but who don’t end up travelling for the sheer lack of company as most tour operators in India focus on couples and families. Our tours allow solo travellers to mingle with each other, soak up the sights and sounds of an international destination, enjoy some space and ‘me’ time and experience a memorable Odyssey. In fact, the inspiration to start Diva Odysseys was sparked off by my own globe-trotting adventures. I realised that like-minded company is an essential ingredient for a good holiday, but is equally hard to find. Each journey I had was diverse and exceptional whether it was swimming with the manta rays in Maldives, meditating with the Bodhisattvas in Cambodia or digging into the exotic hot-pot in Hong Kong. But what made it really special was sharing the experience with like-minded buddies. This inspired me to create Diva Odysseys -- a platform where women can meet, travel and see the world. I’m proud to say that our customer base is wide and varied. Our bevy of divas includes women who are married and single, young professionals or homemakers, educators, businesswomen as well as retired ageless women or empty-nesters who want to celebrate life. Neena Jhanjee is the founder of Diva Odysseys. A travel aficionado and selfconfessed nomad with a background in history and archaeology, she gave up a successful career on finance and private equity to start her dream travel venture.

The Good Life

A

h, Goa! The moment you step off the airplane at Dabolim airport, you smell the land of the sea , sand and casinos. Your step is lighter, your spirit higher and your mood better. That’s what Goa does to all of us. Everyone pushes the envelope of their life just that little bit more when in Goa. They take risks they wouldn’t dare of in their urban existence. People who can’t do without cars get onto a bike, others wade into the water a couple of feet more, non-swimmers don’t think twice about getting on a jet-ski and people with a fear of heights happily strap on a harness and para-sail high in the air. Risk is suddenly a fun word, risk is its own reward. Goa is unquestionably the gaming and hospitality capital of the country and at the heart of it are the Deltin Group casinos and hotels. For over a decade, Delta Corp Ltd has established itself as the leader in the gaming and hospitality sector by creating leading destinations for both players and tourists. Now, the bar is being raised once again with the launch of the group’s new brand – Deltin Group – that offers a bigger, better and even more opulent lifestyle across their casinos and hotels. From the moment you step into a Deltin property, expect an experience that reaches a level of perfection. Be it the custom-tailored service, stunning venues and glittering gaming options, the objective is to make your visit truly unforgettable. At any Deltin property, you are guaranteed a world of glitz, glamour, and excess. It all happens at Deltin Royale and Deltin Jaqk, India’s two largest live casinos, and at Deltin Suites and Deltin Palms, luxury hotels nestled in the heart of Goa. Deltin Royale, the sparkling new casino is truly the jewel of the Mandovi, and every gamer’s dream come true – a place where you experience gaming at its best! With 4 levels spread over 40,000 sq. ft. offering 123 tables and 850 gaming positions, Deltin Royale brings a level of gaming, glamour and opulence that is unprecedented in India. Deltin Royale offers international games, live entertainment, luxurious interiors, Vegas restaurant that serves

world cuisine, and Whiskys lounge with an impressive Single Malt collection. The Flint, The Maverick, The Grand Sinatra and The Grand Duke – all private gaming suites – are lavishly furnished to suit connoisseurs of gaming. Guests can be entertained at the Velvet Lounge, or at the Hearts, Spades, Diamonds and Clubs four private suites where one can unwind after an exceptionally brilliant game. What’s more, Deltin Royale is also home to The Royale Poker Room, India’s largest and only dedicated poker destination. Apart from Texas Hold’em, the Royale Poker Room also offers Cobra, Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO) and Open-Face Chinese Poker (OFC). Tableside service and exclusive guest services ensure that you can focus all your attention where it belongs – the poker table. Indian games are not left behind either – the Taash Room, with 13 teen patti (Indian Flush) and 5 rummy tables offers domestic favourites in a premium section that also has in-room dining facilities, tableside massages and tableside service as part of the package.

Deltin Jaqk

The casino that offers something for everyone, from a gamer to a tourist,

this gaming destination puts the fun in gaming! Over 12,000 sq. ft. of gaming space welcome the visitor to over 300 gaming positions. Equipped with some of the best games, live entertainment every night, a multi-cuisine dinner buffet, this is an extraordinarily fun destination for the whole family. Yes, you don’t have to worry if you are travelling with your kids! Drop them off at the Young Turks playroom where loving, well-trained care givers and a range of games will keep them engaged and happy while you play your own favourite games!

Deltin Suites

Location, they say, is everything. Add facilities to that, and you have an unbeatable combination. And that is exactly what Deltin Suites has to offer. A mere 5 minutes away from the bustling Candolim beach, and only 15 minutes away from Deltin Royale and Deltin Jaqk casinos, this luxury hotel is close to everything and yet offers a respite from the hullaballoo of Goa’s more crowded locations. Set in the heart of the Nerul, Deltin Suites spoils you for choice while keeping in mind everything you and your family need. The 106-suite hotel offers free transfers to the

group’s casinos, 24x7 room service, outdoor swimming pool, gym, and spa facilities. Add to this the multi-cuisine Vegas restaurant and premium Whiskys lounge bar with its imporessive selection of single malts, and you have an experience that can only be described as extraordinary. The best part is that it is only five minutes from Deltin Group’s Lighthouse jetty at Reis Magos, from where you can transfer to the casino in only 10 minutes! The rooms are built to provide space, with kitchenettes, en-suite bathrooms, in-room safes for valuables, LCD TVs and free wi-fi. And the penthouse suites, with their expansive living spaces, two bedrooms, and dining areas are ideal for large families, with enough room for everyone. Because ‘living’ is better than ‘staying’.

Deltin Palms

When in Rome, do as the Romans. And when in Goa, live as Goans. That is the unique calling card of the boutique Deltin Palms hotel, which combines the best of classical Goan villa architecture with the modernity that guests expect. The pleasures of this riverfront residence, where serenity and relaxation calm your mind and soothe your body, make for the ultimate Goan vacation. The highlight, of course, is the private jetty just steps away from your room that offers complimentary speedboat transfers to the casino. Each of the 27 spacious rooms give you the feel of a quaint Goan villa but with every facility to make your stay comfortable. Spend your time by the pool and around the barbeque space in the evening or give your body an all-natural treatment at the Pevonia spa. Deltin Palms is truly the last word in Goan charm! 
