W

orld-class rock musicians from Russia and India are coming together in Goa on 31 January and 1 February to merge two great cultures in an open ended music fiesta. Not since the 60’s has Goa seen something like this, when the first jam session featuring the Beatles took place. Great Live Music 2014 is a return to the basics – and promises to be a stunning musical event. Rock music is one of life’s greatest gifts, and the music scene in Goa is getting a new face this season as Baga rocks to the sounds of this sensational festival. Musicians from both countries will turn on tunes that will set your soul on fire and your feet tapping. Goa Streets is pleased to be on board as Media Partner for GLM 2014! It’s all happening Friday and Saturday, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, near the Baga Bridge. The festival will feature some of the great bands of Rock from both Russia and India. The groups performing in the festival include Indian Ocean (India), Parikrama (India), Junkyard Groove (India), Heretic (India), Brainstorm (Latvia), The Matrixx (Russia), Dolphin (Russia), and Shiva (Russia). A brief about the bands: BRAINSTORM (Prata Vetra) LATVIA - pop/rock band. The band became popular internationally in 2000. Though Brainstorm is deeply rooted in the soil of Eastern Europe, the group draws on many musical traditions, including the harmony and rhythm of Western pop rock bands. Hence the growing demand for Brainstorm for rock festivals like GLM.

Over 2000 entertainers sizzle; dazzle audience at the stunning Lusofonia Games 2014 Opening Ceremony

T

he Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru stadium at Fatorda on the evening of January 18 was the shining light of the Lusofone world. And for a reason. The electrical charge of 2000 performers, the passionate cheers of local supporters, the bedecked stadium and its upgraded facilities all metamorphosed magically to orchestrate the Grand Opening Ceremony for Goa’s most high profile sporting event: the Lusofonia Games 2014. The 2,000 artistes exhibited spellbinding performances of folk dance from Goa and other parts of India. Local school children also partook in the scintillating extravaganza. In order to give the audience a feel of the expanse and ethnic vibrancy of India, artists groups from the North, South, East and the West parts of the country also put on a splendid representative display. Kicking off the festivities, the CEO of the Lusofonia Games, Keshav Chandra welcomed the multitude of spectators gathered, saying, “We have prepared for the Lusofonia Games for a long time, and now that they are upon us, we would like to welcome all the participating teams, and thank ACOLOP for their cooperation in building towards a successful event. We hope that this fosters ties well beyond the field of sport.” Alex Vong, the President of ACOLOP, emphasized on the players being the focal point of the hour, saying, “Athletes, do not forget that these are your games. At the end of the day, sporting conduct above all is what truly shall win the day.” To a tumultuous applause, Manohar Parrikar, Chairman of the Lusofonia Games and Chief Minister of Goa, addressed the public, saying, “I would like to welcome everyone to this magnificent event, the first of its kind in the state. It is my belief that if we build, above and beyond merely this event, the possibilities are endless.

For instance, this can but set a great futuristic precedent for Goa as a host of the upcoming editions of the National Games.” Building the anticipation towards the much awaited celebrations of the evening, Governor of Goa, Bharat Vir Wanchoo, gave the Lusofonia Games his vote of confidence, saying, “These games will go a long way in projecting Goa as a successful host of an international event. They will also promote friendship and camaraderie with the other nations with whom we have a rich heritage of trade relations and cultural similarities. The games also provide an excellent opportunity to promote Goa’s rich culture, food, places and people, while the sports lovers and youth celebrate the feats of the participants on the field. This is yet another occasion for Goa to showcase its rich tradition of warmth and hospitality. I am confident that the games will leave an indelible impression in the minds of those following

the games the world over.” The multi-cultured and multi-coloured event featured artistes performing dances that depicted joy, cultivation, a way of life, seasons, rituals and festivals experienced in our cultural sphere. Multiple segments showcased in a representational way, depicted the various occupations of Goa, colours of India, magic of monsoons, Goa through Mario Miranda’s eye, and more. The entire Opening Ceremony show was a kaleidoscope of India through a spectacle of mass cast, props, lights and technology.

The 3rd Lusofonia Games will be held over the period of 12 days from 18th to 29th January 2014 and will see participation from athletes and officials from 12 nations. Participating countries are founding members Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea- Bissau, Goa (India), Macau (China), Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe and Sri Lanka. Athletes from 12 nations will compete in 9 different sporting disciplines – Athletics, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Football, Judo, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Volleyball and Wushu. The Lusofonia Games are among the largest and the most prestigious multinational, multi-sport games in the world organized by ACOLOP (Associação dos Comités Olímpicos de Língua Oficial Portugues), which involves athletes coming from Lusophone (Portuguesespeaking) countries, namely those belonging to the CPLP (Community of Portuguese Language Countries), but also others where there are significant Portuguese communities or that have a common past with Portugal. I

s Hindi already the most spoken language in Goa, even more so than the local tongues Konkani and Marathi? In the absence of any surveys done, the verdict on this will have to be reserved. But there is no escaping Hindi wherever you go: on the beach, in beach shacks, in coastal restaurants, in the markets, in buses, and even in government offices. So much so that it has set the alarm bells ringing, and this past week, the Goa government, in one of its most decisive acts relating to language, made Konkani or Marathi compulsory in all schools up to the 10th standard, so that the coming generations of Goans continue to speak their ‘original’ languages. And from being compulsory, Hindi has now been made the second optional language. How all this came to be is quite a complex and interesting story, and has a lot to do with ‘identity’. Will Goans continue to cling to their Goan identity, or will we be happy being Indians first? Sixty years ago, the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, decided that Hindi should be taught in schools all over the country as a ‘link’ language, along with English, so as to avoid the fragmentation of the country along linguistic lines. The other reason was to unite the different cultural groups and give them a sense of ‘Indian identity’. Soon after Independence in 1947, in the early 1950’s, the states were reorganised along linguistic lines. So Marathi speaking areas were made into Maharashtra, while Gujarati speaking areas became Gujarat. And so on. When Nehru also decided that Hindi should be taught all over the country along with English to mitigate the linguistic separations, there was large scale opposition to what many said was the ‘imposition’ of Hindi on them, Hindi being seen as the language of north Indians. But in hindsight, linguistic experts today marvel that even in Tamil Nadu, which had most vociferously opposed Hindi, today Hindi is easily understood and spoken. Cut to Goa. Goa became a part of India in 1961. Till then Portuguese was the official language and the language largely used in schools and higher educational institutions. That changed after Liberation in 1961 when Goa’s educational system was brought under the ambit of the Maharashtra educational system. English became the mode of education, and Hindi was made compulsory in schools. Some have accused the government of pandering to pro-Konkani constituents by reversing

the longstanding policy. True or not, it seems clear the decision to make Hindi optional is a byproduct of deep-seated Goan fears of being swallowed up by giant India. Meanwhile, Goa has become a hot tourist destination, and according to the government, 3.1 million tourists visited Goa in 2013. Of this, 2.6 million were domestic tourists from all the different linguistic regions of India. Obviously, nobody here is going to understand their local languages or mother tongues in Goa. How do all those people speaking Assamese, Manipuri, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, Bengali and so on communicate when they wander around and partake of the delights in Goa? They usually do so in Hindi because most of the work force in shacks, hotels, and almost everywhere else in Goa are migrant workers who speak reasonably good Hindi after having grown up on a diet of Bollywood potboilers. The rest have picked up a smattering of English, and a good number are now picking up Russian. Any non-Goan who has done business in Goa’s tourism belt knows the story. Tinky, a hotelier in Baga who is originally from Mumbai, says, “Why should we speak Konkani when it’s not our mother

tongue and not even convenient? Goans are not even one percent of our customers, all my staff are non-Goans because our food is non-Goan. Sure, after being in Goa for so many years, I have picked up a few words of Konkani, but I get by with Hindi because it’s the most convenient way to communicate with my suppliers and customers.” Of course, much of this is not really literature-quality Hindi, but what is known as ‘Bombaiya Hindi’, the

hotchpotch created by the Hindi of Bollywood movies meeting the regional language of a person. That’s because most Indian languages have evolved from Sanskrit, and superficially, there are a lot of similar words across different languages. For example, the numbers: ek, do, teen, etc, are quite similar across Hindi, Marathi and Konkani. I always used to wonder why the local vegetable vendors in the market in Candolim where I live would speak to me in Hindi even though I would start the conversation in Konkani. Then one day I overheard a conversation between a vendor and another person like me, a Goan who had spent a major part of his life in Mumbai speaking Hindi most of the time. That person was speaking Konkani with a pronounced Hindi tilt; the numbers, especially, were more Hindi than Konkani. And though that person made a brave attempt to speak what he thought was Konkani (just like I was also doing to reassert my Goan identity), what was actually being spoken by him was more Hindi than Konkani! It hit me. The vendors switched away from Konkani because I came off to them as a Hindi speaker. Strange are the twists and turns of history. A little over 50 years since the Portuguese were sent packing, barely anybody speaks Portuguese in Goa today. That’s 450 years of Portuguese linguistic legacy gone into oblivion. And now a new legacy is being created by Portugal’s successor: India itself. 

I think I liked it better under the Portuguese. At least most of them stayed in Portugal.

I

t may come as a surprise that not all foreign tourists come to Goa to drink beer, party, and get a suntan. Or, for that matter, do drugs. But what if the drugs we’re talking about are penicillin, aspirin and some post-surgical pain killers? And what if the same folks partying on the beach decide to go in for some liposuction or a root canal while they’re here? Medical tourism in Goa is big and getting much bigger. It’s the reason you see so many elderly foreigners all over Goa staying on for months on end. Any why there are so many dental clinics all over the coastal belt, and so many super-specialty hospitals coming up in Goa. The reason is simple. Typically Goa offers up to 85 % off on international pricing for high quality treatment,

which means costs here are often around one-tenth for similar treatments in the West. A heart bypass surgery that costs $130,000 in the United States costs $10,000 here. A face-lift costing $20,000 in the U.S. costs $3,100 here. Hip resurfacing costing $48,000 in the UK costs $7,000 here. You get the point. “The Goa government has been highlighting the various medical facilities available here at various tourism and travel marts in the West, and the response has been good,” says Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar. According to industry sources, medical tourism now accounts for around 25 % of the revenues of Indian hospitals, and is growing at around 30 % annually. An estimated 25,000 foreigners arrive in Goa each year for some sort of medical treatment. Alec, a 62-year-old Russian tourist, is one of them. He suffered an accident three years back that resulted in severe knee pain. While he was

back in Russia, an acquaintance had told him about the quality medical care available in Goa, and he started checking around on the internet. “One particular hospital caught my attention, Manipal Hospital, which was recommended by my own friends travelling there and getting great treatment. Given the reputation of the hospital, cost advantage in India and my vacation, I decided to email Manipal Hospital,” said Alec. “The hospital staff were very polite and replied to me promptly. I was quite surprised to see the cost for treatments in Manipal Hospital; they are more economical than the hospitals in my country. I started talking to the hospital if I can have an evaluation with them on my knee pain; the hospital agreed and gave me an appointment. “When I landed in Goa, my experience was absolutely fantastic. I had a person from the hospital waiting at the airport to receive me and my wife,” he says, comparing his exclusive room and the polite staff at the hospital to a five-star hotel. “I decided to have my knee replacement there and was discharged in five days. In the mean time my wife got her dental treatment done and cosmetic procedure done at an unbelievable price.” Despite the excellent care you can expect at hospitals like Manipal, NUSI Wockhardt and Apollo Victor, visitors are advised to be careful when coming to Goa for medical procedures. Some foreigners complain of scams, unsanitary conditions, unqualified doctors and shoddy service. Many such complaints come from foreigners who find themselves in random Goan hospitals

following some kind of emergency. Overall, those who come here specifically for medical reasons do their home work and end up in good hands. Hospitals like Manipal, NUSI Wockhardt and Apollo Victor are all great choices. As are some other establishments that have a proven track record, such as Loocs Cosmetic Clinic, which specializes in hair, skin and cosmetic surgery, with branches in Panjim, Calangute and Candolim. The recent Goa Investment Policy announced in 2013 has outlined the importance of medical tourism in taking forward Goa’s story. Setting its sights on the emerging segment of health and wellness tourism, which attracted over 1.3 million people to India in 2013 alone, the draft policy suggests that Goa has “good basic healthcare infrastructure” to cater to the segment. “While medical tourism is growing in Goa, the Government is keen to attract investments in new facilities and draw more medical tourists to Goa for highend and complicated procedures. For medical tourism to take off in a big way, uniformity and quality of services offered are critical,” said Atul Pai Kane, the Goa chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) who authored the draft policy. Richard, a Goa regular, who comes visiting from the UK every year, says, “Most people know about Goa’s excellent dentists, but they are now moving into general medical tourism too.” His hospital of choice is Vrundavan Hospital in Mapusa. “With state-of-theart facilities like spiral CT scans, excellent private wards, and more than enough nurses, this place has my own personal recommendation.” But like with many other aspects of the tourism industry, medical tourism also suffers from seasonal fluctuations, with a season and an off-season. Says a dental surgeon who has a practice in Calangute, “Sometimes, during the entire off-season you don’t get a single customer. Also before there were more English charter tourists who would be our main clients; now there are hardly any English tourists coming, so that has also affected our business. Now the Russians are the

biggest group, but to interact with them we need translators. Not everybody can afford to hire a translator to be on hand all the time.” He spoke on condition of anonymity. Besides the large number of dental surgeons, lots of cosmetic surgery clinics have sprouted in touristy areas like Calangute, offering procedures like liposuction, breast enhancement, nose reshaping, hair transplantation and others. Often, leading doctors from Mumbai, Delhi and other metros, visit Goa to perform the procedures. Many leading Indian hospitals like the Apollo Hospitals, Wockhardt Hospital and Manipal Hospital, have branches in Goa and fly in their best surgeons as and when needed. For the more complicated surgeries, like kidney transplants, patients have to fly to the main hospital, which could be in Chennai, Mumbai or elsewhere. The growth story of medical tourism is expected to continue at least over the next five years, riding piggy-back on Goa’s booming tourism industry. Says Ralph DeSouza, spokesman of the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa, “Medical tourism in Goa can grow at a much faster pace than it’s growing now. We have very good facilities in Goa with brands like Apollo, NUSI, Fortis and Manipal, among others, well established in Goa. We have state-of-the-art facilities in the private sector and smaller hospitals, diagnostic centers, as well as dental care which are very popular with foreigners and have an extremely good potential for marketing.” He adds, “We do need to market tourism more aggressively, highlighting

the type of care we offer including the super-specialty units that exists in Goa.” Victor Albuquerque, who owns the sprawling Victor Exotica Resort in Candolim, has forayed into the hospital business by starting the Apollo Victor Hospital and also an ayurvedic resort Devaya on Diwar island. “Medical tourism has great potential and is attractive for the European visitor because of the vast difference in cost,” he recently told reporters. Perhaps the best thing about medical tourism in Goa is that once you’re done with your procedure, you have the sun and the sand at your fingertips.

I

n my honest opinion, there couldn’t be a better place to be an artist than Goa. Long open roads with fields everywhere, big beautiful houses instead of buildings and complexes, a population of just 1.4 million, and amazing natural beauty in every corner. All this has caught the attention of artists across the nation and around the world who are ditching the fast moving metros for the land of supreme calm. As a result, art galleries in Goa have become more and more interesting and multi dimensional, featuring not just local artists but artists from around the globe. Let’s look at a few.

1. Sunaparanta

Sunaparanta is a non profit centre for the arts which has been running for the last 5 years. Over this time it has become one of the leading art galleries in not just Panjim, but the entire state. Here the platform for arts is not restricted to the usual paintings and sketches, but proudly extends to photography, audio video installations and conceptual arts. It has hosted local as well as national and international artists, establishing itself as one of the leading art hubs of Goa. It also hosts a variety of activities for children and adults including a weekly movie club. It’s a good place to find inspired modern art pieces and large acrylic on canvas pieces. The curators here definitely favour mixed media and abstract work while water colors and realism is not found as much. Normally a collection of work is refreshed every 15 to 20 days.

2. Kala Academy

It’s still the most constant and ‘public’ art gallery in Goa. Odds are if you have been painting long enough in Goa, sooner or later your works will be featured here. Of course Kala Academy is more than just a gallery, serving as the state’s premier centre for the arts. In

the gallery section, new artists are featured often, so it’s often possible to see fresh work. Paintings from all kinds of artists feature here, whether it be a recent graduate or an internationally acclaimed artist. There little deliberation on the part of the curator as to what kind of work should get displayed and what shouldn’t. Kala remains a service to artists and to the public. And just like two sides to a coin , this has both pluses and minuses. Hardly will you ever see artists repeated here, and most of the time the collections are refreshed. But at times the quality leaves something to be desired.

3. Gallery Gitanjali

Gallery Gitanjali is an up and coming art gallery in Mala, Panjim. It is housed in the building of Panjim’s oldest school: People’s High School. Older Goan art lovers who come here may well have studied here as kids. The general sense of the gallery is similar to Sunaparanta, with an upscale crowd, often including the who’s who of the state. Yet it still has a bit more down to earth quality to it, including the humble gallery space. Clever curation by gallery manager Miriam Koshy, who often does quirky things like putting an old school time sketch made by the artist next to their very professional oil paintings.

4. Carpe Diem

This south Goa centre operates as a multi function gallery for both arts and entertainment. Located in a big beautiful house, approximately 250 years old, it frequently holds workshops for films, photography, writing and even fitness dancing. Located in the beautiful village of Majorda in South Goa, this art hub is one of the best art spaces in the south. Art exhibitions are a regular occurrence, including paintings, photography and sketching. There’s also quite a few inspiring performances, right from a simple pop music show to a sophisticated

sitar recital.

5. Sanskruti Bhavan/ Krishnadas Shama Central Library

While not exclusively an art gallery, this space holds an important place in the art world. It is beautifully designed by Goa’s own Gerard de Cunha. The art gallery in the Bhavan is still to take off in a way where it gets recognised amongst its other Panjim counterparts. It is a huge space on the right corner of the entrance floor, and provides an easy, wide open feeling while browsing. The coloured high ceiling adds to the effect. The major attraction of this place is the abundant resources available to artists, students and the public in general. There’s a huge library packed with a wide variety of reading material, a music recording studio, a painting and sketching room, a stationary room, internet cafe, study room and a gym. Everything in the space is well looked after and well maintained. 

he State Art Exhibition, previewing Jan. 21 at the Kala Academy in Panjim, showcases 74 works from some 30 Goan artists, with varying themes, delightful colours and a wide array of expression in oil, acrylic, watercolour, mix media, charcoal and pencil. The exhibition, inaugurated by Kala Academy chairman and MLA Vishnu Wagh, also includes photographs and sculpture. Vallab Namshikar’s colourful semi-abstract portraiture catches the eye, as does Gaurish Poke’s vibrant splashes and strokes in red. The

Goan duo continues its Beach Volleyball domination on Day 2! The second day of sporting action on the sands of Miramar Beach had a surprise in store for sports enthusiasts. In addition to the existing main competition court, another court was thrown open for matches to be played. This decision was welcomed with a loud cheer from the audience stands as this meant that more matches could be played in lesser time. The spectators were waiting with bated breath for the first match to start on the main competition court. The match featured Goa’s favourite Beach Volleyball players, Pralhad Dhawasker and Anil Shirodkar and Angola’s Hildebrando Bastos and Gerson Da Silva Leitao. Within few minutes of the commencement of the match, it was clear that the Goan duo was in no mood to take things easy. They continued their winning streak by dominating yet again and demolished the Angolan defence by 21-14 and 21-13.

children’s faces portrayed in Ajay Kothawale’s works each tell a story without words. Hitesh Panikar, Siddarth Gosavi and Sanjay Naik all composed works merging man and animal. Sripad Gurav combines mythology and the ‘now’- with the deity Hanuman hovering over high-rise buildings, the dark background accentuated with white, drawing in the viewer. Vitesh Naik’s signature is the social scenarios of Goa, with people socializing in tiny liquor bars. Shilpa Naik’s ceaseless fascination with ants continues. The scenic beauty of Goa has always been a muse for many artists, though we

don’t see much of it here. An exception is Beena Vansekar’s semi abstraction. Darshan Shetye has a pleasant watercolour of the façade of an old Goan house. Vasudev Sheyte’s large format portraiture was thought provoking. ‘My inspiration is the merging horizon of life beyond and the echoes of thoughts of the tech world, and I feel joy when viewers can relate to the subject’, he said about this painting. The etchings by Shivraj Shety, Sachin Naik, Rayan Aberu and Preeti Prabhakar contain disconnected symbols, and figures both surreal and straightforward. In this exhibit, canvas and paper share space with sculptures in fibreglass, clay, terracotta, and stone. Gopal Kudaskar beautifully sculpts the face of a man tinted in silver, and the brain detailed in brown. Vidyadhar Kundenkar has a sculpture titled ‘Extra Territorial’ made with bicycle components, while Rajendra Mardolkar has assembled an interesting figurine with nuts, bolts, and screws, welded together. The largest sculpture is a

In the 18 photographs on display, there are depths of reflection, the play of light and shadow, and a kaleidoscope of colours. It was great to see compositions in black and white. Siddhivinayak Naik shows us seascapes - the impact of the reflection of light on the water, another a silhouette of a boat setting off the sunset. Chandan Goankar brings us a man on the seashore, as the waves come in. Presley Fernandes captures scattered toys on the floor of an old Goan home, and Swapnesh Mangoankar has timed his composition in capturing a boat and the reflections in the water. Gauresh Poka’s candid picture captures clearly defined figures in the breaking of the ‘dahi hundi’- a ritual performed on the festival of Janmashtami, (Lord Krishna’s birthday). The photograph is stunning! Sajjan Bhater’s multi-hued intricate interiors of the ceiling and murals in a church show a delightful combination of colours. Presley Fernandes captures colourful puppets in a row, while Kapil Madokar has a candid shot of a boy playing with a car tire on the road with a Christian shrine in the background, among other exhibits. It captures a moment in time which will never reoccur. ___ On view till 25th January at Kala Academy- Campal

Mozambique even missed a penalty in the first half, but were gifted an own goal in the second half which was enough for them to win the match 1-0.

Getting up close and personal with the man and woman - on the street By Bina Datwani

H

ere’s a scenario most of you must be familiar with – listening in on peoples’ conversations (ok accidentally) whilst shopping at your local supermarket. As I was pushing my trolley cart of quality cellulite goodies up and down the aisles at Newtons last week, snippets of chatter from the other shoppers kept wafting into my hearing range. An English woman who looked to be in her late sixties was berating her husband in angry hushed tones for being distracted by the sight of an attractive young Russian girl dressed in a pair of hot pink short shorts (typical); a bunch of young Indian lads were excitedly debating which of them had the best looking calves (seriously?) and, lastly, at the checkout counter, a local mother of two was complaining to her girlfriend about the marital tensions created by her visiting mother-in-law (“my sorpotel is better than hers but the silly husband can’t admit that in front of Mummy!”). It then occurred to me that shining the light inwards into the minds of random folks may throw up some interesting revelations, a form of people watching from an internal angle. And let’s be honest; we all relish finding out the gory details re the lives of others. So, donning my Sigmund Freud hat, I set off for a saunter along the Candolim stretch in search of ‘patients’. Charles Lambrou had a smiling countenance when I spied him outside Café Coffee Day – a good omen. Turns out, he’s an author currently residing in Goa and was en route to the beach to “connect with the ocean … I believe watching the beautiful horizon is sort of an analogy for the endless possibilities that exist within us”. After a line like that, I wasn’t surprised to learn that this fortysomething South African national teaches the art of mindfulness. Why Goa? “It’s an upgrade from living in Bombay, which was an assault on my senses whereas here, it’s a fresh dimension plus the much reduced cost of living definitely helps!” At this point, I could tell that Charles was

itching to get to the sea so I quickly threw my last question at him: ‘what’s the most interesting thing that’s happened to you today?’ Quick as a shot came the response. “Being interviewed by you of course”. And with those parting words, he took off but left me with a very sweet gift – a copy of his book that explains how our body holds the secret to health and well being. I think it’s going to become my Bible. After a quick shot of caffeine (yes, there are limits to my holisticness), I returned to my adventure and came across Maisie Skinner, who is in her twenties, English and three months pregnant. “This is my 23rd visit to Goa in the past twenty years,” she explains, adding that her family comes here to reconnect with local Goans whom they met three decades ago. She’s working towards getting a Level 2 coaching badge in the UK which will enable her to teach serious football. “It goes up to level 10 where one is then qualified to coach international teams”. Tres interesting ! Any quirky incidents to

share? “My scooter almost collided with a taxi this morning and that’s a bit scary considering I’m in my second trimester!” Now there’s a truly Goan experience. At this point, the mother-to-be begs off saying “I’m just tired, tired, tired all the time”. Good luck Maisie. Next, Holiday Street was around the corner so one decided to get off the beaten crowded track and venture towards the beach. UK born Analisa Jefferies, with her peaches and cream complexion, was hovering outside the Kerkar Retreat, looking a tad more animated than the rest of the passers-by. I asked the reason behind her excitement. “I’m in town for a flying 24 hour-visit from Singapore and have been racking my brains trying to remember the name of the place we used to stay at but had just about given up. The friend I’m staying with suggested eating at a beach shack down this stretch and eureka! I found it” (Kerkar Retreat). What’s on the agenda for the remaining few hours in Goa? “Feasting on garlic chilli prawns and poi bread”. This comment sets off

hunger pangs in my stomach – lunchtime. Satiated, I sit back and survey the other diners around me to try and find more fodder for my article; Nilima (name changed, you’ll see why in a second) smiles as my eyes rest on her – bingo. She starts sharing right away: “My German husband filed for divorce after 31 years of marriage stating that I was too fat. According to the laws there, he’s entitled to 50% of all my assets so I’ve had to go back to work”. Originally from Tanzania, she is a trained nurse. She owns a home in Candolim and comes to Goa a few times a year to unwind. For the record, I didn’t find her to be particularly fat. By now, my brain is suffering from information overload so I decide to call it quits for the day. Freud was right; the more we learn, the less we understand but, ‘one day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful’. Here’s wishing everyone good mental health. 

26  Feature By Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello

This is the story of my wise old man, Fideles Pereira. I love him not just because he’s my dad but for who he is and what he stands for. He’s a retired headmaster, Ex-President of CRCC Club, Ex-President of Mando Festival Committee, toastmaster and overall gentle man. Fideles Pereira, 76, triumphed over many challenges, and he instilled the same indomitable spirit in me.

The story of my extraordinary dad

M

y dad served as headmaster of St. Bosco’s High School in Chinchinim for nearly three decades, and he was in the teaching line (is there a more noble profession on earth?) for his entire career. Despite being born with a congenital defect of the right foot, he has never let this handicap hinder his personal growth and professional success. He underwent an operation as a child, but it failed and led to gangrene, forcing him to miss a year of school and leaving him with a lifelong limp. After passing St. Bosco’s High School in Chinchinim in 1956, he wanted to pursue his studies in Mumbai. “There were no higher educational institutions in those days in Goa. I decided to move to Bombay to pursue my studies as this was the only option available due to my handicap.” These were tough times for Goa and for him. My dad was a member of Azad Gomantak Dal and Indian National Congress, revolutionary outfits devoted to ending the Portuguese colonial rule that had been in effect since 1510. “I could not get my visa to join for higher studies in Bombay. So, I tried to cross the border of Goa at Majali with some others. It was a very harrowing experience for all of us.” “We missed the agents who were helping people to cross the border. We had to walk through ploughed fields, wade through waist deep water, walk in forested areas, climb hilly regions and brave rough terrain and heavy rains for nine days …” Finally, they caught up with the agents. But before they could cross the border and blend in with the Maharashtrian masses, Indian officers arrested all of them, including the agents, at Majali. My dad stayed at the Majali police station for eight days, before being sent back to Goa. He later learnt the bitter truth about the arrest of the agents. The police were on the watch for them as they were involved in the illegal smuggling of

Fideles Pereira liquor from Goa to Mumbai. Neither my dad nor his peers at the time had any idea that in the presence of those agents, they were sitting ducks! After his release, he reached the Portuguese police post at Pollem. One of the Goan policeman remarked, “Bhienaka re, tumi Goia pavleat.” (“Don’t be scared. You have reached Goa.”). There he spent a night before being shuttled to Canacona police station, from where he would try to make his way back to his home in Chinchinim. The problem is that he didn’t have a single paisa to ferry him home! That didn’t stop him from boarding a bus and asking a shopkeeper he knew to lend him a rupee to pay his fare. My dad was just a 19-year-old lad at the time. After the ordeal, he fell sick, and it took months to recover. In 1957, he caught a lucky break. My dad managed to procure his Documento de Viajem, his passport, and travelled to Mumbai without any hassles. He joined first year of Arts in St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai. Three years later he graduated in Sociology and Psychology, and with a determined outlook went ahead to complete his post-graduation in History.

There were financial crunches due to Portuguese rule. But he managed with the help of some relatives in Mumbai. Returning back to Goa in 1963, two years after liberation, he joined his alma mater, St. Bosco’s High School, as part of the teaching faculty. Armed with B.Ed (teacher’s training degree) in 1969, he took over as headmaster of the school in the same year till he retired in 1997. He has raised countless toasts for weddings without charging a single fee to the bridal couple. He is very interested in sports and to this day you can find him in animated discussions about football, tennis and cricket. He was a two-term President of Clube Recreativo Cultural de Chinchinim. He has been very active in the Chinchinim Church, serving as both Secretary and Vice President of the Chinchinim Parish Council. He’s also a past President and current member of Chinchinim Mando Festival Committee, which organizes Mando competitions annually. My dad says, “I am now enjoying a quiet retired life. I am blessed with a beautiful family. It is great satisfaction to see my students in different fields – medicine, engineering, sports, chartered

accountancy, shipping, academics, etc. I had to face many hardships and challenges in my life, but my faith in the Lord and positive outlook kept me going forward. ” I caught up with a few people who have known my dad over the years. Mr. Devdatt S. Lotliker, an ex-student who works at Zuari Agro Chemicals Ltd., says, “Punctuality and discipline was his main agenda in the school. He used to maintain good rapport with everyone in the school. He was like a military chief to me.” Allen Viegas, Secretary of Mando Festival Committee, Chinchinim says, “He reminds us that Mando is the essence of Goa and it is because of people like him that traditions are kept alive.” Flaviano (Flazo) Cardozo, a senior citizen from Chinchinim quips, “He is a gentleman and honest, well respected in the society.” Bosco Cotta, advocate and ex-student of Sir Fideles says, “He commanded respect by being a friend, mentor and always willing to help in our difficulties. Till today whenever I meet him it is with fond memories which are still treasured.” Fideles Pereira has lived a life that matters. Not by accident, but by choice.
