Of Pre-Concert Blues, But A Not-So-Blue Night The Downs and Ups of the MLTR Concert

et’s get one thing straight. Michael doesn’t need to learn to rock, because he already knows how. Michael Learns to Rock, or MLTR, did just that when the band wowed a crowd of thousands at a concert in Bambolim on Dec. 19, 2015. Every fan who attended would agree they got their money’s worth – every single paisa of it. But what ended as an awesome night began as a dampening evening for most – even though it’s fair to say the lasting memory is that of the band’s mind-blowing performance. One detail the organisers forgot to mention was the concert’s start time. The printed tickets mentioned no timing, while a local daily carried a story on the day of the concert, only mentioning that “Gates would open at 5:00 p.m.”For those who booked their seats online at bookmyshow.com, the timing of the concert was indicated as 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The contact number given on bookmyshow.com was engaged continually on Dec. 19, so there was no one to call for confirmation. The only option left for those who had booked tickets was to ask other people who had booked tickets ... which turned out to be a disaster, as each person was as confused as the next.

Needless to say, most people felt it would be a good idea to show up earlier at the stadium, rather than later, after having paid either Rs. 1300 or Rs. 2000 for their tickets. Naturally, no one wanted to risk being even a minute late. People began trooping into the gates of the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee stadium right from 3:30 in the afternoon. Seated in the surprisingly strong December heat, peoples’ tempers were flying by 6:15 p.m. – the time the organisers finally decided to let people enter the second of three gates one had to go through in order to enter the main venue. In exclusive Indian fashion, those who were given admission later tried to push their way to the front of serpentine queues. Many of these were successful in jumping the queues, given that fans standing in line were already exhausted from the over two-hour long wait. Some fans, though, were not about to take this breaking of queues issue lightly, and young but bold fans were seen giving a piece of their mind to older fans in

Are EDM festivals in Goa Safe? With Supersonic and Sunburn Around The Corner, Festival Security Is A Big Challenge Two Security Honchos From TOPSGRUP Say They’re Up For The Task

DM – Electronic Dance Music. It’s huge everywhere, but with Supersonic and Sunburn coming up this month, it can be argued that Goa has assumed the mantle of EDM capital of India. A part of this reality seldom talked about but extremely pertinent is security. With terrorism on a lot of people’s minds following a spate of Islamic State-related attacks around the world, preparations are well underway in Goa to avoid that kind of scenario in Goa. The footfall for the two festivals in Goa is expected to be huge. There will be a large police presence, along with sniffer dogs, metal detectors and a wide array of other measures. In the run-up to the two EDM festivals, I spoke with Ramesh Iyer, Vice-Chairman and CEO, TOPSGRUP India, a leading global security firm, and Niraj Bijlani, the firm’s executive director. Rahul Rivonkar: What goes into managing and securing a large-scale event such as Sunburn & Supersonic? Mr. Ramesh Iyer: This year’s Sunburn and Supersonic span over 4 days – December 27 to December 30, 2015. For Supersonic, we conducted a venue/ site survey with the client to understand the entry and emergency exit points, we decided on the number of security personnel required to secure the event – lady guards, bouncers, officers etc. After the recce, we have proposed a plan to the client and are awaiting an approval from their end. In the plan, we have also incorporated deployment of QRT (Quick Response Team) inside the ground as we expect more than 20,000 people to be present there per day for Supersonic and more than 40,000 people for Sunburn. Looking at the numbers, we have suggested a total strength of 310

security personnel including the day and night shifts. RR: What are some of the lessons learnt from past experiences, especially the latest Paris attack? RI: The recent attack in Paris was very unfortunate but I have a different take on that. I think the deployment of the security is also very important, especially managing a city like Paris. I see a lack of coordination between the intelligence and security agencies which allowed such horrifying attacks there. There is still a gap between the two which needs to be bridged so as to avoid such serial attacks killing hundreds of innocents. I see it as a reason of lack of prior leads from intelligence agencies to the police or to any other security agencies which could have taken prompt action before such brutal attacks. RR: How will you get the international standards of security protocols to India? Mr. Niraj Bijlani (Executive Director, TOPSGRUP): Security is always a major concern in today’s world, whether it be an indoor or an outdoor event. Since India is a densely populated country, we have to make sure we meet international standards of security for our clients.

This is one such issue where we can never compromise even in the minutest security checks considering the volatility of the environment around the world. Security agencies play a very vital role and have to stand up to the expectations of the client and the responsibilities we undertake. RR: Is there a real threat to the security from the ISIS in Goa? NB: ISIS is a threat to the entire world. We have not received any such threats from ISIS or for that matter from any other terror groups. However, these organizations cannot be neglected. During the festive season in Goa, we tighten our security to keep a close check of the terror threats pose by these extremists’ groups. We adopt strict measures to avoid accidents or any kind of mishaps during the festivities. RR: How are you working with the local police for the EDM festivals? NB: The entire security plan has been made in cooperation with the Goa police force. This is to ensure that both the government agency and we as a private industry work in tandem to provide the highest safety standards for the music lovers visiting the festivals.

The critical area of the event venue will have our guards accompanied by police officials. Moreover, we have also asked the policemen to be part of our Quick Response Team squad. Police patrolling vehicles will also be used to screen the nearby areas and the entire intelligence gathering will be used by our team to suggest a course of action in case of any mishap. RR: What are the extra measures that you will be taking considering the recent ISIS attacks in Paris? NB: The recent Paris attack is the most unfortunate event and could have been averted. Event security has definitely evolved over the years. Physical security has merged with technological advances. Video surveillance is now sophisticated enough to incorporate facial recognition and higher quality CCTV cameras are creating footage that is sharper than ever. With the help of these, one can react faster in case of a crisis. Further, continuous monitoring and surveillance solutions help us identify the threat and immediate action can be initiated from the monitoring room ... We would also have a team in plain clothes within the event vicinity to gather intelligence over any planned activity. 

100 Year Old Silent Film Gets Jazz Treatment Italian Jazz Trio Interprets ‘Cenere’ at Sensorium

he audience seated at the mini-amphiteatre of the Sunaparanta Goa Centre forthe Arts is taut, eagerly awaiting the performance of an Italian trio of musicians. Saxophonist Marcello Allulli, pianist Giovanni Ceccarelli and drummer Matteo Fraboni are set up in front of a white screen. The trio start off with a prelude of free jazz improvisation, setting the tone for what is to come. After the prelude, a 100-year-old black and white Italian silent film flickers to life on the screen. But it is not silent. The trio accompany the film, a tragic love story, with an amazing jazz rendition of a soundtrack, played live under the starry skies of Goa. This jazz trio performance was held at Sunaparanta in Altinho, Panjim, in association with the Italian Embassy Cultural Centre Mumbai on December 18, as part of the second edition of the arts festival Sensorium {Love}.The trio’s show is a musical tribute to ‘Cenere,’ a 45-minute-long silent film made in 1916. Marcello composed this music seven years ago, drawing inspiration from jazz, Mediterranean music, folk songs and free improvisation.The three musicians met in Rome in the 1990’s and played together as the ‘Trioakì’, led by German multi-instrumentalist Aki Montoya and featuring jazz maestro Tony Scott. Cenere, meaning ashes in Italian, is based on the Nobel prizewinning authorGrazia Deledda’s book of the same name. The film starred Eleonora Duse, lauded by Charlie Chaplin as one of the finest theatre actresses. This film is particularly valuable as it is the only existing visual document of Duse’s theatrical art and has been lovingly restored. The black and white film opens to an Italian countryside. The tiled roofs remind me of Goan village houses. The piano plays contemplatively, with just the faintest rustling from the drummer, asRosalia, an unmarried mother, takes her illegitimate son to his father. The music picks up pace as we see his father, a married man who works at a grainmill. He is shocked at the sight of the boy who proclaims “I am RosaliaDerios’ son!” The people at the mill fall quiet, and the music too is stilled. It’s a powerful use of silence by the jazz trio. “Your wife gives you daily bread, but the other one brings your living flesh!” a mill worker mocks the boy’s father. Rosaliahas fled without meeting the father, and now feels desolate and bereft. “Once a knit is broken, the threads don’t tie anymore,” she laments. The boy, Anania, loves a girl named Margherita, but his real passion is finding his mother. When he eventually finds her, the saxophone expresses the mother’s anguish with a savage intensity. There are times when all three musicians come together to create something larger than the sum of their parts. Their sound track rises luminously at these moments to bring tears to the viewers’ Turn to page 9

People started passing snide remarks loudly and to no-one in particular, including this one: “For what do we have so many MBA graduates in Goa, if even a small-scale concert of around 4000-5000 audience members cannot be organised well?” Or this one: “We haven’t paid just Rs 10 for this concert, the way the organisers are just taking our time for granted.” A bugged lady even exclaimed, “What are the VIP pass-holders waving their tickets in our face for? Nobody cares for their VIP passes at this point. All anyone wants to do is merely enter the damn arena.” By the time the show finally began, it was 7:10 p.m. And when I say the show began, I was referring to the opening band – Goa’s own A26, who did a really fantastic job of entertaining people with their unique renditions of Bryan Adams “Summer of 69”, Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life”, and Europe’s “Final Countdown”, among other hits. The first chords of Michael Learns to Rock’s opening song “Someday” were finally heard at ...drumroll ... 8: 40 p.m! Of course, with that, the last traces of fans’ anger for being made to wait faded, replaced by fangirl-and-fanboy-like screams and wolf-whistles. MLTR then went on to entertain continuously for nearly two hours. Fans sang along to hits like “25 Minutes”, “The Actor”, “Blue Night”, “Animals”, “Complicated Heart” and screamed their disagreement when lead vocalist and keyboardistJascha Richter proclaimed that the

From page 8 eyes. Sadly,Eleonora Duse’s famed theatrical ability does not come through enough in this silent film, a perception that actually caused her to decline any further film roles. There were moments when the ambience of Altinho played cameo roles in the sound track. Rosalia anxiously awaits the return of her son, whom she has sent back to find whether his beloved will accept the return of his mother. There was silence from the musicians, but a baker passed by the Sunaparanta premises just then, and his horn’s ponk-ponking lent a surreal and comical twist to the moment. Margherita is furious. She accuses Anania of misleading her. The mother stumbles away brokenhearted, to die in an abandoned house. All the musicians come together in full painful glory here, with orchestral power. I am suddenly reminded of the melodramatic trumpets and drums of tiatr, the local Konkani theatre. Not surprising, as the first ever Konkani tiatrItalian Bhurgo (Italian Boy), staged in 1892, directed and produced by LucasinhoRibeiro, was inspired by an Italian theatre production in Bombay. “Tutto e cenere”, all is ashes … life, man, destiny … says the subtitle on the silent film at the end. But that magical evening the ashes came to life,through the music of this talented trio of musicians. Bravo!

to the band with their hands, they did so by swaying the flashlights of their mobile phones to songs like “I’m Gonna Be Around”. After the band left the stage, the audience called for two encores – which the band was more than willing to give, having saved their best songs for last: “Paint My Love”, “Breaking My

Heart” and ending with “That’s Why You Go Away.” By the time the night was over, happier hearts could not have been found in the world so wide, and Goa thanks everyone who worked on the stage and behind the scenes for a brilliant MLTR concert that all those who attended will never forget. Ever. 

Steven covered the killing of Daniel Pearl in Pakistan, hurricanes in Puerto Rico and Mexico, the death of Yasser Arafat, the Elian Gonzales case in Cuba, a coup in Fiji and the rise to power of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. Goa’s Football Fiasco And The Short Journey From Euphoria To Despair By Vivian Maverick Martins

H

ow gut wrenchingly close FC Goa came to clinching the Indian Super League title. In the 87th minute of play, the Gaurs were ahead 2 to 1, and it seemed to all that football glory was Goa’s. And then something extraordinary happened. In the next three minutes, opponents Chennaiyan FC scored two goals in what can only be described as some of the most dramatic football in the game’s history. So far, all good. Tiny Goa lost its chance to be football champion of giant India, but spectators had just witnessed a stunning game – and we could take some consolation knowing that the people of Chennai, had who have suffered so much in recent weeks because of devastating flooding, finally had something to be happy about. Unfortunately, the story didn’t end there. After the Dec. 20 match, Goan players rushed at the Japanese referee, FC Goa co-owner Dattaraj Salgaocar claimed the match was fixed, Chennaiyan FC Skipper Elano Blumer was accused of assaulting Salgaocar,the entire Goan franchise boycotted the awards ceremony, and Salgaocar had Elano arrested. It’s possible that Elano committed assault. And it’s even possible, though not particularly likely, that the referees were biased against Goa. But none of that erases the fact that what should have been a proud moment in Goan football history (we did make it to the finals, after all) has turned into a debacle of international proportions. Having Elano arrested rather than handling the matter through official football channels hurts efforts to attract foreign players. By claiming the match was rigged, boycotting the awards ceremony and rushing the referee, the Goan team came off as sore losers devoid of all sportsmanship. One of India’s top sports goals – to assume its rightful place in the international football arena as the world’s second most populous nation – has suffered a blow. After all, this was the championship match of what has now become the country’s premier football league, despite only being in its second season. A senior official of the All India Football Federation, speaking to Streets, said a strong example should be set by the ISL and AIFF

How Five Goals, A Scuffle, A Boycott and An Arrest Dashed Goa’s Football Dreams Is This The Way To Build Up The Beautiful Game In India? for FC Goa’s unsporting behaviour, but predicted in the end little would happen. “How can you get a player arrested for something that happened on the field? How can you accuse referees of being biased and assault them? Serious action should be taken against all involved including Elano for his misdeeds. But I don’t think anything will happen as one co-owner is the Vice President of AIFF and other co-owner has family ties with the league owner,” said the official, who asked that his name not be used because he was criticising his own organisation. The turn of events stunned the stadium of 20000 spectators in Fatorda, as they watched Chennaiyin FC stage its dramatic comeback in the dying minutes of the match to win 3-2. The Gaurs had captivated the football crazy state with an amazing run,and it wasn't supposed to end this way. After a goalless first half, Bruno Pelissari gave Chennaiyin FC the lead by converting a penalty in the 54th minute that was cancelled by FC Goa’s super sub Thongkhosiem Haokip in the 58th minute. The Gaurs came tantalizingly close to winning the title when Spanish Maestro Jofre Mateu Gonzalez scored a brilliant free kick in the 87th minute to spark off wild celebrations with three

minutes of regulation time left. Before the match, FC Goa’s Brazilian Coach Zico had said “it is difficult to stop a player like (John Stiven) Mendoza, if we do that it will be good for us”.And Zico’s boys did just that until the game’s final moments. But then Mendoza’s time arrived, and what followed were three minutes that shook and shattered Goa. First the Colombian jumped high to cause a mix up between Goan players Laxmikant Kattimani and Pronay Halder, to make it Even Stiven (pun intended) at the end of regulation time. As Goans were trying to recover from the shock, Mendoza delivered the knockout punch in the first minute of added time, breaking Goan hearts in the process. After the match, Mendoza, speaking to Streets, said “I am very proud the way my team and me played throughout the tournament. We deserved to win”. And yet the events following the win, especially the alleged assault by Elano and his subsequent arrest, undoubtedly dented the joy of victory. It’s now up to the courts to decide Elano’s fate and whether he committed any crime (he has since been allowed to return to Brazil despite an effort by the Goan police to confiscate his passport). Rajeev Gomes (who happens to be a Goan and an FC Goa fan), called the turn of events highly unfortunate for the sunny state. "This incident has brought a bad name and reputation for the image of Goa,” he said.“Defeat should be taken in a sporting spirit.” Dattaraj Salgaocar defended his actions at a press conference. "If Elano came to me immediately and apologized, I would not have done anything. Even the ISL officials did not take any action. It was at that time, to show that we have some pride, some self esteem, I had to do what had to be done." Unfortunately, it was a costly point to make. Taken together with the boycott, the on-field scuffle with the referee and the comments questioning the match’s integrity, the Goan franchise could very well face sanctions by the ISL, the AIFF or both, despite the doubts of the AIFF official I spoke to. And that’s not to mention the bad taste the episode has left in the mouths of many, and the poor example it sets for youngsters, especially those harbouring football dreams. The ISL in a press statement said that it has taken a "serious view of the unsporting behaviour by the Goa franchise and alleged unsporting behaviour of certain players of the teams on and off the field." Speaking to reporters after the football fiasco, Coach Zico said that he personally would have preferred to attend the prize ceremony but that he didn’t do so out of respect for the owners. He added that those owners, namely Salgaocar and Shrinivas Dempo, had always respected his coaching decisions. Zico also said that he thought the Elano incident was unfortunate, and could complicate efforts to bring big name players and coaches to India. Ordinary fans have watched all this play out with a mixture of sadness and dismay. Many of their comments stand out as singularly wise in comparison with the hot-headedness of the stakeholders. “The game was kind of shocking. We lost from a winning position in the dying stages but I don’t think there was any foul play. Chennaiyin FC snatched the win from us,” said FC Goa fan Lloyd Carneiro. And fan Lyn Fernandes said, “I think we should be gracious in defeat and take it in the right spirit.” And this from Ryan Rodrigues on the Elano incident:“Such things happen in football. Whatever happens on the field should remain on the field. Getting a player arrested for pushing and shoving is not right.” It seems the owners of FC Goa have a thing or two to learn from fans troubled over watching the beautiful game turn ugly. 

The Radiologist With a Savvy Sense Of Business

Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello chats with 60 year old Dr. Francis Almeida – a radiologist, businessman, Lion’s Club member, ex-Rotarian and affectionate father.

I

’m ushered into the cabin of Dr. Francis Almeida at 5 pm. A stout man with a heavy medical book in his lap welcomes me with a warm smile. You would think being a doctor for over three decades is enough work, but this gentleman is much more than just a doctor, as I am about to learn. “My philosophy is to try and reach out to as many people as possible,” says the affable Dr. Francis. He passed his MBBS in 1976 and earned his DMRD and MD degrees in radiology three years later. He considers himself a ‘conventional radiologist’. “I do ultrasound, mammography, dental X-rays, bone densitometry, etc. I am also a recognized doctor for shipping employees. ‘Shippies’ come here to clear their medicals,” he explains. Dr. Francis sees to his patients at his Margao clinic from 8.30 in the morning to 2 pm in the noon, takes a quick lunch break, and is back at the clinic at 2.45 pm, where he remains till the clock strikes 7.15 pm. Then he heads off to his home village of Assolna to play table tennis or soccer. After a brisk game, he is back home by 9.45 pm for dinner, and retires to bed around midnight. In a day, he sees to about 30 patients. “People come with various complaints such as renal stones, liver diseases, varicose veins, chest complaints, fractures, tumours, disc lesions, etc,” he says. “I have been involved in a lot of things,” he reflects, when I probe into his non-medical activities. I fought for 50 percent concession of bus fares for students during my college days. I was the President of Goa Association of Resident Doctors, a body that took up various issues of resident doctors in the state. I served as the Youth Secretary in the Youth Congress for 15 years. I was also the State Councillor for the International Movement for World Peace that was affiliated to the UNESCO and UNO.” Dr. Francis was a member of the Rotary Club from 1984 to 1989. He joined the Lion’s Club in 1994 and still continues to conduct various medical camps under this Club. He founded his own NGO in 2003, the Sai International Bal Yesu Bal Krishna Charitable Trust, which serves street children, destitute women and widows, and provides them with education, medical care, library

facilities, etc. This NGO is also involved in developing farm land in Karnataka. Dr Francis owns about 20 acres of land and is very keen on organic farming. His grandfather had a good sense of business. Known by the name Lokhankar, he owned a husking mill, oil mill and public transport business. Dr Francis himself ran a software factory in the 1990s and even did a short stint of manufacturing locks and supplying building material to various clients, with a workforce of over 60 employees. The savvy doctor also once owned about 15 trucks and heavy machinery. But when his sons didn’t show any inclination to take over, he wound up that venture.

“I am a self-made man; self-taught in many ways. I have certain principles in life and thereby I can be associated with almost anything. I now plan to go into farming, and run this medical practice by proxy. There are already three doctors in the family,” he says with a proud twinkle in his eye. Strangely for a man of science, he has an unusual hobby: preparing horoscopes. He has read several books on astrology. I offered my date and time of birth and my star sign, and he read me my horoscope! Dr Francis received the ‘Outstanding Young Person’ award in 1995 and ‘Doctor of the Millennium’ in 2000, bestowed by the Association of Medical Sciences. His wife Trudy and children Sharif, Suraj, Pooja and Soham complete his happiness. He offers some parting words for the youth: “Fix your goal and work towards it. Be disciplined in life! Take part in sports. It is very important to stay fit.” 

Christmas-time is Here! Goa Welcomes The Season Of KulKuls And Kormolam By Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello

It’s time you took that big box of decorations down from the loft. The sight of the 5 feet tall Christmas tree gives you a thrill, as your husband carries it to the corner of the living room. Out come the stars and tinsel! The season of joy, peace and hope is knocking cheerily at the door. Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello chats with a few Goans to peep into the elaborate Christmas preparations that start a good week or two in advance.

o, ho, ho! Christmas is just round the bend! Santa Claus with his bagful of sweets strolls into the neighbourhood, with an entourage of kids singing Christmas carols. You drop a few notes in their rattling tin as they go about singing ‘Jingle bells, jingle bells….’ from door to door. After all you have been there, done that, in your childhood too. Precy Coutinho from Navelim says, “Our dresses are ready. Shopping is already taken care of. The decorations have been put up by my kids. I am yet to go to church for confession, others have already finished with that! Sweets such as bebinca, neoris and cake will be bought from the bakery. I usually prepare kulkuls every year.” Twenty year old Stacy Fernandes from Panjim is delighted with an important part of the celebrations. “I had given my dress to be stitched a month back. I usually get my clothes stitched from the local tailor. We just buy the cloth material and give it to the tailor, and then choose a dress pattern. I just got my dress two days back, it looks lovely!” she beams excitedly. A badly stitched Christmas dress can spell doom in the minds of girls. And God forbid that someone else turns up at Church with the same dress design! Many households have a crib made in their balconies or outside the house. A thatched hut set amidst green fields is symbolic of the manger that the Christ child was born in. Muriel Barros from Velim opines, “I start with the crib preparations a week in advance. The nachini that I scatter on the moist sand

has to sprout. It’s a simple crib, with African statues. My mom had brought set of Mother Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus figures from the United States.” She adds, “It’s been 3 or 4 years that I have been setting up this crib. It is placed next to the Christmas tree in the living room.” In recent years one can also see giant cribs or Nativity tableaus erected near the village church or the roadside. Local boys take great pleasure in crafting these elaborate scenarios, that may include King Herod’s castle or the Bom Jesus Basilica of Old Goa and even a cashew feni distillery! In their enthusiasm to create a White Christmas in balmy Goa, the lads give a coat of white paint to the trees and add generous amounts of fluffy cotton as foliage. Voila, it’s snowing in Goa! For many Goan folk, Christmas is still essentially a spiritual occasion. Elvira Pereira of Moira feels that “a good confession is more important than other preparations. It is the cleansing of the soul that makes hearts ready to receive Jesus.” “I am yet to put up the Christmas decorations. I didn’t have much time as I am working. Sweets are prepared and ready to be served. The Goan delicacies have been prepared by my loving mom,” adds Elvira. Though most would like to prepare Christmas sweets every year, those who are busy at work don’t have the time to prepare the seasonal neoris, kormolam, bebinca, dodol, etc. With time constraints due to hectic schedules, they purchase sweets from bakeries. Prices are also

hiked during these seasons for necessary commodities such as eggs, sugar, maida, etc. Brother Dileep Viegas of the Dominican Order at Orlim says, “We don’t prepare sweets. Some of our benefactors who stay close to our house give us sweets and food items.” Those interested in going for Christmas dances scout the newspapers to check out the various dances that are organized in halls. Sometimes, people opt to go to far-off halls for a Christmas Dance, simply because good bands are hired to play there. The dances go on the whole night. One can spot boys clad in suits returning in the wee hours of the morning with their girlfriends or partners. Anna, a student from Margao, says, “I buy a new outfit for Christmas every year. This year I have bought a strappy red dress to be worn along with a shawl for the midnight service at Loyola High School in Margao. Then I will be going for the Christmas dance with my boyfriend Erlic.” In western countries, Christmas preparations start a month or more in advance. Small children excitedly tug their mother’s skirts in shopping malls and lick the chocolates given by the Santa. The snow-capped trees in colder countries evoke the imagery of western Christmas carols. In Goa, many are seen buying the ubiquitous red Santa cap with a white border. Youngsters don the cap on Christmas Day and whiz by on their bikes. Jason from Panjim says, “I have this Santa cap that I had bought about five years back. I wear it for every Christmas, when I go roaming with my buddies. It lends a festive spirit to the big day.” Everybody loves the Christmas season! Merry Christmas to all! 

“Content Flows And Finds Its Own Level” Eminent Indian Writer Keki Daruwalla Says Reading Matters

Keki Daruwalla, an eminent Indian poet and short story writer, was at the recent Goa Arts& Literature Festival, with his latest book Ancestral Affairs. His first novel For Pepper and Christwas published in 2009. He won the Sahitya Akademi award for his poetry collection The Keeper of the Dead in 1984, but returned his award in October this year to protest the inaction of the Akademi over the issue of the violent killings of intellectuals such as Dabholkar, Kalburgi and Pansare. In his keynote address at the festival inaugural, Keki Daruwalla mused on the difference between poets and novelists, and reflected on the spectre of intolerance and the recent terrorist attacks around the world.

Ambika Kamat: Could you elaborate on the ‘creative process’ that occurs when you write a book? Keki Daruwalla: Well, the process of writing begins with the idea and the urge to express one’s thoughts. The first few lines that are written down determine the nature of the literary work. In the case of poetry, I find the syntactic patterns and rhythm in these initial lines and continue with the same throughout the poem, for instance, say 8 syllabic pattern. The content gradually flows like a liquid and finds its own level.

AK: Do you set or chart out any general themes before starting with a piece of writing? KD: As you know I initially wrote committed poetry, no longer so much. But recently I have begun to write on birds. AK: According to you what is the relationship between reading and writing? KD: Reading matters a lot. With the advent of the Internet one is exposed to a wide range of writing. Students, I think, should make best use of this facility which our generation did not have. Reading literary journals can help one get acquainted with the current developments in literature. AK: Which authors influenced or shaped you during your formative years? KD: Archibald MacLeish, W.H. Auden, Philip Larkin and Nikos Gkatsos are some of the poets who have influenced me in many ways. Ambika: What advice would you give budding writers? KD: I would say, do not hesitate to try your hand at various genres. As you are attempting to do it, judge yourself. See what captivates you. Work upon it. Sieve the good writing that you do. Continue in that direction and you will achieve what you desire. 

t was a dream come true for me to interview Meena Alexander, a well known poet and the author of Fault Lines, the memoir we read as a text book at college. The internationally acclaimed writer attended the 6th Edition of the Goa Arts and Literature Festival earlier this month at the International Centre Goa. Born in Allahabad, India, Meena Alexander spent her formative years in Kerala and Sudan. She is Distinguished Professor of English at Hunter College and at the CUNY Graduate Center in the Ph.D. Program in English. Her latest volumes of poetry include Illiterate Heart (2002),Raw Silk (2004) and Atmospheric Embroidery (2015). Ambika Kamat: How does the act of creation unfold in your writing? Meena Alexander: For me, a poem basically begins in my mind with an image. The image is left as it is, to grow on its own, as I shift to some entirely different activity such as a walk in the park or cooking. I invariably end up burning my veggies while I think about the image subconsciously! The period that a poem might take to develop from the image varies considerably. I once wrote a poem in two days, whereas the poem titled Moksha that appeared in Atmospheric Embroidery, based on the Nirbhaya case,took me two years to write. AK: Do you set out a theme before embarking on your writing? MA: No. I don’t think of a specific theme before starting to write. I believe that the poem has to find you. Once an idea has caught hold of you the poem develops from there. AK: What, according to you, is the bond between reading and writing? Which writers have shaped your thought? MA: A writer must read. I personally like reading Wordsworth, Jayant Mahapatra, Adrienne Rich and Galway Kinnell. They have influenced me in multiple ways. AK: As a writer, do you go through a phase called the ‘mental block’? MA: Yes, I do. I have many incomplete poems, and books that have not been published. I don’t even know if I will ever complete some of them. The published work of a writer, I feel, is essentially only the tip of the iceberg. Ambika: What advice would you give aspiring writers? Meena Alexander: I would advise young writers not to give up. Not to lose their heart. Trust your voice. Writing is about clarity and grace rather than money. 

A Better Stage for Special Players Chetna Charitable Trust has Ambitious Plans for Differently Abled Kids

All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players” wrote Shakespeare in his play ‘As You Like It’. But a band of stage artists from Curchorem, Goa have ambitious plans to create a level playing stage for all children, especially the differently abled youth. Sankalp Theatre is a cultural organization, based at Curchorem, Goa, with an impressive 15 years of activities in the fields of theatre, education, medical and sports. Having worked with differently abled children over the years, these social workers felt the need for a dedicated school for these children. Thus emerged the Chetna Charitable Trust, which set itself the noble task of building a state-of-theart school and rehabilitation centre at Curchorem. “We staged shows of our plays, sold donation coupons with prizes and raised money to buy a plot of land measuring 10,200 square metres at Cacora, Curchorem,” says Rajoo Megashyam Naik, the tall and portly leader of the Trust. Social activists Nandesh Vasta, Rubiya Kakodkar and Sunil Naik are among the other trustees. Even before construction of the proposed two-storeyed school building could begin, the Trust started the school at rented premises in Curchorem city. The drive for funds was intensified and the first phase of the new school has now begun to take shape. “Around 60 percent of the ground floor of the first phase is completed,” informs Rajoo. “The present school at the rented premises caters to 36 students, but the new school, once completed, will have a capacity of 250 students.” The running costs of the school currently come to Rs 1,60,000. The Trust has applied for a government grant, and will be given these funds from the next

academic year onwards. The grant will cover roughly half their running costs. Showered with affection and tender care, the students at the Chetna School are blooming. Ishwari Naik has excelled at floor hockey and has represented Goa at the National Games for special children at Simla this year. Another lad, Shivam Naik, not only plays hockey well, but is also a talented keyboard musician. Then there’s Bhavika Kudalkar who is a good singer, and Kavita, who loves painting and knitting. The school provides differently abled children various training and therapies like Academics, Music, Sports, Dance, Vocational, Occupational, Fine Arts, Computers and more. There is a computer studio, a library, games facility, kitchen, garden and swimming and physiotherapy unit. Learning through fun is amply seen at Chetna’s school. The kids in their bright orange uniforms plant trees, practice yoga, play carrom, work out at the gym, dance and sing, and take part in the numerous activities

planned meticulously by the caring staff members. “These children cannot easily remember what we teach them,” says Rajoo, when I ask him about the challenges of teaching special children. “So we have to teach the same lessons repeatedly, so that they absorb the skills.” To facilitate this, the school has special educators Rubia K. Naik and Ramachandra Bhosle on the staff. Geeta Kavlekar is their Vocational Assistant, Bernandina Vales teaches music, Vinashree Naik is the PE Instructor and Kanaya Naik is their in-house physiotherapist. The visiting faculty includes physiotherapist Carla Sousa, Counsellor Percy Cardoso and Deepak Gurav who conducts dance therapy. The arts and craft team has Sonal Saglani, Maya Kuncoliencar, Nagraj Achari and Reema Kakodkar, teaching the children skills like knitting, crochet, drawing and painting. The medical team of visiting doctors comprises Dr Atchut Kakodkar, Dr Priyanka Raikar and Dr Naresh Babu.

Many of these professionals work for token fees, and some perform these labours of love absolutely free. “The parents of the children also need counselling,” says Rajoo, “Dr Atchut Kakodkar comes in every Thursday, and checks and treats the children, and even the parents if needed.” Chetna Charitable Trust’s ambitious project will be built in three phases, at an estimated total cost of 10 crore rupees .The first phase has been budgeted at Rs 4.53 crores. The architect of the project is Mr Rajeev Sukhtankar and the engineer is Mr Vidhyadhar Kakodkar. The Trust welcomes support from the public in the form of sponsorship of classrooms and other units. Annual Zoroastrian Meeting Held Right Here In Goa The Contributions of Parsis Far Outweigh Their Dwindling Numbers

hink of a Parsi in India, and immediately the image of an affluent, hard working and influential community comes to mind. The Zoroastrians (followers of the 7th century prophet Zarathustra) are divided into two groups, Parsis and Iranis. They migrated from Persia (modern day Iran) to Gujarat and Sindh to avoid persecution by Muslim invaders. India has about 60,000 Zoroastrians, and their numbers are fast dwindling because of an aging population, low rates of birth and high rates of intermarriage. So when the World Zarathushti Chamber Of Commerce (WZCC) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) this year at the International Centre Goa, Dona Paula, on 19th December (which also happens to be Goa’s Liberation Day), it served as a reminder of the group’s stunning contributions in a great many fields. Some 150 Zoroastrians, including many prominent business leaders, converged on our state for the meeting, bolstering efforts to promote Zoroastrian cohesiveness. The first AGM of the WZCC was held in 2000, in Houston, Texas. The Mumbai Chapter started in 2004 at New Delhi, followed by expansion to Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Iran, Dubai, London, Hong Kong and Canada.

The Zarathushti people are well known for their legendary ethical integrity and business acumen. WZCC has over 1800 members around the world. Among the entrepreneurs that WZCC has helped are 43 year old Karan Bilimoria, CBE, who ‘carried coals to Newcastle’ by establishing a brewery business in London, audaciously branding his products as ‘Cobra Beer’ and ‘General Bilimoria Wine’. The eminent economist Mr. Minoo Shroff has been the WZCC Global President for the last six years. He serves as a financial expert on the Board of Directors of several leading business houses. As Chairman of one of the largest public trusts, The Bombay Parsi Panchayat, for 21 years, he was associated with The Indo Japanese Association, and even given a citation by the Japanese Emperor. “Our trump card is trust,” Minoo Shroff tells me. “We are good Indians, contributing to every imaginable professional field, except for politics

– that’s no place for us. The often repeated question is ‘what is in it for me’ in becoming a member of the WZCC? It’s the essence of learning through net-working. Besides, those who have achieved success in life should in turn ask the question ‘what can I do to contribute?’ This can be done only by seniors sharing their invaluable experience and empowering the younger generation to fulfill their aspirations.” With regard to the Indian economy, Minoo opined, “We are doing rather well. Being part of G20, the world recognizes India, we have a surplus current account, and are poised to takeoff. It will take time, but it will happen. The centre of gravity of global business is rapidly shifting to the East with China and India.” 86-yearold Minoo retires after his tenure of six years. At this AGM, Edul Daver from New Jersey was elected the new President. Sandip Bhandare, the Vice-President of the Goa Chamber of Commerce, spoke about this event coinciding with the Liberation Day of Goa, the links Goans and Parsis have had, and the benefits of GCC associating with WZCC. Presidentelect Edul Daver spoke of his plans to create a master web site, a global trade fair and a joint project for solar energy and clean drinking water in India. Brigadier Benjamin Panthaki, who served as aide-de camp to Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw, also spoke, referring to his book on that great soldier. Among the memorable quotes by Manekshaw is this one: “The qualities of a good leader are to have moral courage to stand above his superior, distinguish right from wrong irrespective of what your boss might think and what your subordinates want.

Be friendly, not familiar.” Baron Meghnad Desai, a nationalized British economist and Labour politician was invited as the Chief Guest. “India is on the cusp of a major transformation,” he said. “Good political leadership takes responsibility for defeat and shares the victory. India suffers from this crucial problem of low level discipline in the dysfunctional Parliament. There’s no decorum, order or discipline. This never happens in the British Parliament. Why do we have this culture? Because the people in power lack education and refinement. Progress will happen by debate, not by aggression.” Every year, WZCC presents awards to outstanding Zarathushti entrepreneurs and professionals. Among this year’s winners was Dr Zarir Sholapurwala, Chairman of Zeonics Systech, Bangalore. He was awarded for his outstanding contribution in supplying state of the art radar technology to the Ministry of Defense. 28-year-old Dr. Urvakhsh Mehta, MD, Assistant Professor at NIMHANS-Bangalore was lauded for his contribution to mental health and neuro-psychiatry. Another awardee, Jasmin Sohrabji, MD of Omnicom Media Group is listed among the top 20 women in media and advertising. Young entrepreneur Tania Bulsara is visually impaired. She studied computer science, started a centre for computer study from her garage in Mumbai, and has given free tuitions to over 200 economically backward blind children. The evening concluded over cocktails, dancing to live music, and dinner. The number of Parsis around the world is now estimated at around 110,000 people, with an additional 80,000 Zoroastrians identifying as Iranis. So why not advocate the purpose and live the spirit? Dress up as Santa or just yourself and visit one of the NGOs that work for underprivileged kids.
