‘Take 5ive’ Band Leader Rocks More Than Just Goa!

A

By Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello t 20 years old, Adrian Sequeira cuts quite the impressive figure. With his long hair and flowing beard, he looks the part of a guy with creativity running through his veins. He’s a band leader, a sound engineer, a singer, a basketball player and a student at the Smt. Parvatibai Chowgule College in Margao. He leads the 5-piece band ‘Take 5ive’, with Fleur Dias as the lead vocalist, Aldrich Rodrigues as the male crooner, Dylan Carvalho on rhythm guitar and lead guitar, and Ryan Andrade on bass guitar. Adrian is passionately into keyboards. Adrian says, “The band members are quite versatile and can switch between instruments,

complementing each other’s talents. They also play violin, melodica and percussion instruments.” The band, which formed in 2013, pooled the talents of these 5 youngsters, who are all currently pursuing their academics. To be sure, the challenges were many. “As I look back, we were totally disorganized. We made quite a few mistakes. We learnt the hard way,” he says, but quickly adds: “No regrets whatsoever!” “There were one or two incidents where we were fired by the sound engineers. Though we were very upset at that time, we look upon these as learning experiences and can laugh today,” he TURN TO PAGE 4

continues. “There is a formula for every function. The tempo picks up after a couple of numbers. The choice of songs also matters.” “Our band is like a family. We are there for each other not only at the professional level, but are each other’s support system.” He continues, “We love taking up challenging songs. We have sung Justin Timberlake’s ‘Mirrors’ last year which turned out to be a huge hit with the crowd.” Their musical journey is story of youthful passion. After Adrian cleared his Xth standard from Loyola High School (Margao), Ryan and he would practice for long hours at Club Harmonia. They would observe the weddings at Club Harmonia to learn a few tips. Adrian says, “There were days when we would play from 9 am to 11 pm. It was later that Aldrich joined us. We discovered each other’s talents.” The 3 of them started jamming and were noticed by the Club Harmonia Committee. In 2011, they played for one of their friends’ birthday parties.

Though there have been some offers from Belgaum, Bangalore and Mumbai, they have not yet considered taking them up as yet. Adrian says, “We are still in the experimental stage. First, we need to market ourselves and establish a strong fan base. We are interested in singles.” They sing in English, Portuguese, Hindi, Konkani and Spanish. They play pop, reggae, punk acoustic, classic rock, jazz and blues. Adrian says, “We have always been original. You will never hear the same song being sung twice. We strip down music to its raw form.” Having worked with songwriters and lyricists like Vince Costa, with a growing following on YouTube, these budding musicians have a bright future. These 5 members also sing for nuptials and funerals.

Their choir, also known as Take 5ive, sings mainly in English and echoes melodious Konkani hymns too, but only on request. In his school years, Adrian vice-captained his basketball team and had won many inter-school matches at South Goa level and also at the State basketball level (2008). Though he was selected to play at the National level, he declined the offer to pursue other interests. Adrian philosophizes, “I have to explore my ultimate potential. Explore new avenues… Keep experimenting… I believe in doing best in whatever I do.” Having completed Steinberg Certified Sound Engineering Course and 7th grade in Keyboards from Trinity College, Adrian has his sights on opening a studio and establishing himself in the music industry. He adds, “Ever since I was 3 years old, I have been inspired by American keyboardist Jordan Rudess.” His advises his fellow young people, “Be your own kind of beautiful and be the change you want to see. You live life only once. Make the most of it.”

How about a Thai Valentine's? Thai-n-Wok and Siwa Salon & Spa are Panjim’s ‘Little Bangkok’ By Goa Streets

W

ho said you have to travel to Thailand to experience all things Thai? The truth is you don’t, because our quaint Goan capital Panjim has obtained something of a Little Bangkok all of its own. Enter Thai-n-Wok, the utterly authentic Thai restaurant that now graces the Marriott Lane in Panjim, with its sister enterprise, Siwa Salon & Spa, just steps away on the same Goa street (self-serving reference intended!). The beautiful thing about both Thain-Wok and Siwa Salon & Spa is that you really do feel as though you’re in Thailand at either spot. The food at the restaurant is as true to the original flavours of Thailand as any establishment in Goa, or, for that matter, India. The reason is simple. Her name is Dew Sivapon Vaz. She herself is from Thailand, and her restaurant would hold its own even if it were set amidst the steamy sidewalks of Bangkok. Now add to this mixture Dew’s Goan husband

Warren, who has spent decades in highprofile positions in the hospitality industry in major world capitals, on ships and in various hotspots of Goa, and you get the full picture of an entirely winning combination. From the delectable Tom Yom soup to satay sticks cooked to perfection, Thai-nWok is the best fix for any Thai craving. Siwa Salon & Spa has special packages for all you love birds looking for something special during Valentine’s Day week. So here’s to blissful pampering! At the end of the day, the draw at Thain-Wok is the incredibly good food, and the allure at Siwa Salon & Spa are the Thai treatments unavailable anywhere else in Goa. When we say Dew and Warren have got this one right, we mean it. It’s a treat on Valentine’s Day, and every other day, too. • Where: Goa Marriott Resort Road, Miramar, Panjim • Phone: +91 832 2461980, +91 7350522781 • Email: thainwokgoa@gmail.com • Website: www.thainwokgoa.com

The Passions of Mopa

The airport may be inevitable, but the fight heats up

E

By Goa Streets

ven by the standards of emotion-inflamed Goa, the recent public hearing on the environmental impact of the proposed Mopa airport in North Goa stood out as one of most stormy in the state’s history. The shouting matches threatened to spill over into a violent free-for-all. That supporters of the proposed airport outnumbered the opponents at the hearing was not necessarily a reflection of majority opinion; many if not most Mopa opponents reside in the south and the meeting was held in the far north. The controversy that has ignited so many Goan passions is a captivating, wholly Indian saga pitting the powerful against the weak, environmentalists against developers, farmers against politicians. With the pro-development forces of the BJP in power both at the state and national levels, with powerful politicians (including the current chief minister) possessing personal interests in the Mopa project, and with the central government now stepping in with an offer to build and operate the facility, the Mopa International Airport is starting to look inevitable. But India being India, and Goa being Goa, past experience has shown that when citizens band together and fight for their cause, even the mightiest must beware. Each side, to be sure, has valid arguments. Why shouldn’t Goa have a second airport, considering that the first one is run by the Indian Navy and is not available to commercial flights during peak morning hours? The project will bring thousands of jobs, much needed commerce and a robust boost to not just the proposed site at Pernem but also the entire Goan economy, proponents argue. So many things that can’t happen now at the Navycontrolled airport at Dabolim – from

installing hangars to increasing cargo transport to raising the number of flights – would now be possible, they add. And compared to other sites in Goa, this one’s ecosystem is not particularly diverse or sensitive, the proponents insist. “The airport will have no adverse impact. It is being constructed on a plateau that is by and large barren and is miles away from any protected forest,” said Devendra Prabhudesai, a teacher from Pernem. No, scream the airport’s opponents. The whole affair smells of crookedness, with politicians supporting the project to promote their own land investments, and a second airport making no financial sense in a state of Goa’s size (not to mention a THIRD international airport now going up an hour’s drive north at Chipi in Maharashtra). Mopa’s location is at the far tip of the state rather than in the centre, as Dabolim is now, the opponents argue, and therefore would likely serve Maharashtra as much as or more than Goa. Farmers and other land owners were not compensated fairly when the site was acquired, they say, and now they point to new evidence of rich aluminium bauxite reserves at the site constituting a bounteous public resource that could never be exploited if a runway and terminals were built atop it. All that’s in addition to rich water resources discovered beneath the land. “MOPA Greenfield International Civil Airport (MOGICA) will be the first such airport in the world to be built on one of world’s richest high-grade bauxite ore deposits and one of world’s richest ancient tropical sub-coastal groundwater

aquifers,” said Goa University researcher Nandakumar Kamat, who made the explosive revelations about the site’s natural resources. The reports of last week’s hearing on the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Report - held at Simeche Advan in Varconda village of Pernem - will now be sent to the centre’s ministry of Environment and Forests, which will rule on the Goa government’s application for environmental clearance. “We are not against the Mopa airport,” said the Sarpanch of the Mopa panchayat, Vinayak Mahale, who was joined by politicians in neighbouring villages in support of the airport. The proposed airport will improve the financial position of the state and help ensure Goa’s rightful place on the international map, the supporters said. Those with opposing views chimed in quickly, bringing up issues including inadequate compensation, destruction of groundwater springs, and discrepancies in the EIA report. “The EIA study report is misleading,” said Sandip Kambli a long-time opponent of the Mopa airport. “There is no mention of the farming land in the report. On the contrary, it is mentioned that the villages have no plantation at all.” He found support among farmers who lost their land to the airport. However, one such farmer, Rupesh Parab, said he did not oppose the airport as long as compensation to farmers is increased. “The compensation of Rs 20 to Rs 40 per square metre provided towards land was not adequate. It has to be increased. It is better to

have an airport than having a mining site at the location,” Parab said. Questions remain on whether the Goa government will be able to meet its deadline of having the airport in place by Jan. 1, 2018, as promised. Despite issuing repeated ‘Requests for Qualification’ from private parties, asking them to build and operate the new airport, the government has found no takers. There have been several deadline extensions to no avail, until the Airports Authority of India, a central government-owned company, decided to throw its hat in the ring. Fatorda legislator Vijai Sardesai smelled a rat. His theory is that the central government arm-twisted the AAI into bidding for an airport, which no private player thought fit to bid for due to viability issues. "From this development, it is obvious that all the bidders have 'privately' indicated to the government that the Mopa airport is not commercially viable and that they are not interested in the bidding," Sardesai said, predicting that the government’s push will force the AAI into a loss making venture. "It appears that the central government has forced the AAI to take this step to save face and to ensure that the Mopa airport is bulldozed against the wishes of the Goan people and by neglecting environmental and safety concerns," Sardesai said. Meanwhile, in the background attracting little attention is the work currently taking place at the Sindhudurg Airport at Chipi-Parule in Maharashtra. Just over an hour’s drive from the north Goa border, bulldozers are fast at work completing the runway and shells of the terminal buildings are up. The government plans to make it an international airport, and if it’s completed within 18 months, as some predict, the debate in Goa may become moot. If a single airport is enough to service huge cities like Mumbai, New Delhi and Bangalore, it’s hard to see why tiny Goa would need three. 

Park Hyatt Masters of Food and Wine, an Italian Indulgence at Da Luigi By Goa Streets

T

here’s a reason – a very good reason – the Park Hyatt Goa chose the word “indulgence” to describe the Italian culinary extravaganza that took place this past week at their restaurant Da Luigi. Anyone who’s frequented any of the resort’s restaurants knows that these folks take their food very, very seriously. The Italian Indulgence – three culinary events from Jan. 26 to Feb. 6 – were a case in point, to be sure. This indulgence was part of the Park Hyatt Masters of Food and

Wine series hosted around the world in which award-winning chefs prepare interactive and intimate gourmet lunches and dinners, informative classes and demonstrations, heavenly wine pairings, cheese and tea tastings, among other events. Goa Streets attended an Italian four-course wine pairing dinner on Jan. 31 as part of the Italian Indulgence, and the experience was, well, highly indulgent! Alessandro Nesi, sommelier of the Piccini winery in Italy, was on hand to explain the wine pairings, and the food was extraordinary. Those lucky enough to participate in the indulgence got two choices for each of the first three courses, as follows (all were simply

amazing): • Seabass loin, pistachio crust OR Salted ricotta cake, pistachio crumble • Angus beef “tagliata”, black pepper scent OR Mushrooms gnocchi, black pepper scent • Scallops, cinnamon essence OR Saffron risotto, cinnamon essence There was a pomegranate and mint sorbet offered between the second and third courses, and for dessert, a Chocolate Napolean with salted caramel vanilla ice cream. Sure, this is the Valentine’s Day edition of Goa Streets, but we would have used words like “sinful”

and “indulgent” to describe the evening even if we weren’t approaching the holiday of love. That this Italian evening was taking place at the Park Hyatt Goa, one of the most romantic spots in Goa, definitely added to the air of ‘la dolce vita’. The resort, reminiscent of an Indo-Portuguese village, is set within 45 acres of gardens, with myriad waterways and lagoons and one of the largest swimming pools in Goa. Of course at the edge of the property is Arossim Beach on the Arabian Sea, making for a stunning setting. Yes, the evening was certainly an indulgence, and, after all the calories consumed, perhaps not entirely guilt free. But with flavours as delicious as these, and wines as smooth and velvety, this is one sin we’d happily commit again. ----For more information and reservations, visit goa.park.hyatt.com.

10  Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day ideas for the fun, the funky, the crazy and, of course, the hopelessly romantic

By Sapna Shahani and Anuradha Visvanathan

W

hat do you do to show your love on this one day when your choices can end up winning you a shower of affection or a barrage of criticism from your better half? Should you pick the perfect setting, purchase something that seems to be made just for him or her, or select an activity that is unforgettable? On Valentine’s Day, finding the exact right message can be a challenge. For starters, here are six creative ways to make this February 14 especially memorable for your belle or beau. 1. Get a professional photo shoot - Sure we all have camera phones but hiring a stylist and getting professional pictures taken is worth every extra penny. Sunieta Narayanan (7350909391) offers personal styling tips and you can pick up a designer outfit at her retail store right on Ashvem Beach. Then call Steve Dias (8605321781) to arrange a photo shoot and you’ll have indelible memories of your coupledom on this special day. 2. Adopt a pet - If you know that your better half loves animals (and is ready to invest the time to care for it), why not adopt a cute puppy or kitten at the International Animal Rescue centre in Assagao (http://www. internationalanimalrescuegoa.org.in/) 3. Get serenaded by Joanne Fernandes - Choose your special ballad and email joanne.soul@gmail.com to schedule a live performance for that special someone. Joanne, by the way, is Goa’s Tracy Chapman, arguably the best singer in the state.

4. Go sailing together - Moonlight sailing from Marine Bay located on the western banks of the dreamy Chapora river must be one of the most unusual and unforgettable Valentine Day experiences in India. Order a bottle of your favorite bubbly, some fusion tapas (I loved the BBQ spare ribs with jungli potatoes and spinach artichoke dip) and head to the water for a sail on their Hobie catamarans. These beautiful boats are stable and responsive... A wonderful introduction to sailing. Visit them at Facebook.com/marinebaychapora. 5. Take a Cooking Class - Learn how to bake just about anything with Vandana in Panjim and bond along the way. Contact her at Vandana’s Delicacies on Facebook. 6. Experience Carnaval in Panjim through a photo walk organized as part of the first ever Goa International Photo Festival (see story on page 16). Visit www.goaphotofestival.com to sign up.

Of course, if you’re looking for a venue or a more traditional gift like jewelry, here are our picks for some of the best Valentine’s events and specialty offerings. For something truly different this Valentine’s Day, check out the Grand Hyatt Goa’s special romantic dinner at the “Dining Room,” featuring champagne, serenades and a delightful selection of Asian, Middle Eastern, Italian and Indian cuisine. While you’re at the resort in Bambolim, you may also want to check out their delightful Valentine’s Day Spa package which features, among many other offerings, a chocolate body polish (see story on page 18). The Park Hyatt in South Goa, is also, of course, a terrifically romantic spot for any Valentine’s Day celebration. The Grand Mercure Goa Shrem Resort in Candolim is also preparing a Valentine’s Day celebration featuring a romantic dinner by the poolside or in an exclusive cabana. You can choose between being serenaded to live music or customizing your own playlist for your partner on the resort’s dock station. (For bookings call +91 (832) 2494848). The Thai & Wok restaurant is the place to go if you’re in the mood for spicy, entirely authentic Thai food in the Goan

capital during Valentine’s Day (or any other day, for that matter!). And while you’re there, you can gift your honey a soothing spa treatment at the Siwa Salon & Spa right next door (husband and wife team Dew and Warren run both establishments – and Dew is from Thailand!). The Black Sheep Bistro in Panjim is literally taking the cake this Valentine’s by creating a whole menu with the core love ingredient, chocolate – prepared in both savory and sweet varieties. At the A Reverie restaurant in Calangute, owners Aakritee and Virendra Sinh have concocted an evolved five-course menu glorifying love in its most instinctive form, and one that elevates the ‘art of erotica’ on a plate. At the Clematis Resort in Candolim on Feb. 13 & 14 check out the unplugged musical night by Gargi Varma & Band, 8 pm onwards (call +91 8805 565400 to reserve). Speaking of bliss, it’s hard to beat the special Valentine’s Day packages at the Zaara Spa at Resort Rio in Arpora. As the spa itself promises, “surrender yourself into Lovers Paradise!” If you’re in the mood to just go dancing to 90s funk and hiphop, check out the newly renovated baroque designed Eviva bar in the Azzure by Spree hotel in Calangute. Another great place to hang out on Valentine’s Day is Café Lilliput in Anjuna, with a great DJ line-up (not to mention the Feb. 16 bash with the globally-acclaimed Gaudi, performing Electronica and Dub Reggae). For couples on the south side of the state, RJ Joed Almeida and Stanley are organizing an event at Soul Souffle on Feb. 13. Folks will be encouraged to serenade their Valentines, with the help of a karaoke DJ. Or if you need to be on the beach, Zeebop in Utorda expects to be busy again this year, offering great food and live music, besides their picturesque location. As this Valentine’s falls on a Saturday, a weekend getaway is on many

lovers’ agenda. Among the most picture perfect new venues is Anahata Retreat at the pristine Ashvem Beach, with its trendy European fusion restaurant or should we say ‘food workshop’ L’Atelier. In the same area, Sandy’s Place in Morjim features highly tasty food and mesmerising bamboo huts. Cafe Cotinga at the Tamarind Hotel in Anjuna has been well known for their desserts for some time now and recommend their Red Velvet cakes for Valentine’s set up on one of their cosy birdcage tables arranged with roses for the occasion. For the holy grail of pastries, of course, you must check out Bodega at Sunaparanta in Panjim, home to Goa’s (and, frankly, one of Asia’s) most celebrated pastry chefs, Vandana Naique. Of course, a sure shot way to impress your mate is to spend some real cash on precious jewelry or a designer watch. A good place to start is Laxmi Jewellers in Margao, which has prepared a delightful Valentine’s Day collection. Javeris in Panjim has 10-20% discounts on platinum, Dia, gold and branded watches. If you plan ahead, you can also order online from Suman Mishra’s elegant Valentine’s collection at www.smishing. com. Jewelry isn’t the only gift women appreciate though. One can never have enough couture and the Bebel store in Calangute is a great place to pick up a gift card towards a superb designer dress by the likes of Stephany DSouza so your girlfriend or wife can shop guiltfree. Just one more way to keep the “Happy” in Valentine’s Day! 

14    Sports India’s premier football league fights a battle of survival with Goan teams failing to attract crowds. Was the Indian Super League created to destroy the I-League? By Vivian Maverick Martins

I

-league is currently underway with three Goan teams Salgaocar FC, Sporting Clube de Goa and Dempo FC participating. However, a sound of silence echoes around the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda. The absence of a partisan Goan crowd might sound ideal for the visiting teams, but for the home teams and the I-league it is a matter of grave concern. The Goan fans who were queuing up to buy tickets for the Indian Super League (ISL) and creating a ruckus for non availability of the same for ISL matches have suddenly gone missing. The vast empty spaces in the stands at PJN Fatorda speak about a football crazy state no longer enthralled about its I-league teams. It’s like witnessing the realistation of a prophecy, as if the big-money ISL were created to kill the I–league, albeit softly. Sunando Dhar, CEO I-league says, “Goa has obviously been very disappointing in terms of numbers. We’ve spoken to the clubs and they’ve initiated some marketing activities. We hope Goan people come out and support their teams.” “ISL had lots of passionate supporters for the Goan team. After that the loyalties are divided so that could be one of the reasons for the low turnout at matches. Last season we had better crowds in Goa, so it is strange to figure out what went wrong as Goans are very passionate about their football,” Dhar added Goan football faithful were seen chanting Forca Goa and routing for FC Goa during the inaugural edition of the Indian Super League. However, all those fans seem to have gone into exile only to return for the next edition of ISL. I-league has failed to excite them as it continues to crave for entertainment & funds and is forgotten by most Goan football fans. I-league clubs were optimistic that the ISL impact would benefit the I-league. However two months into the league that hope is fast fading. So where have all the fans gone and why this indifferent attitude towards the I-league? Daniel Fernandes, an ardent FC Goa fan from Panjim says, “We had 4 I-league clubs in Goa,

however I did not support any of them as there is no emotional connect for me. With FC Goa it was different, and it managed to unite the entire state.” “The I-league clubs need to take initiatives to revive the league and build a fan base which they have failed to do for decades now. I really think it’s time the family names are changed so that there is an emotional connect with the fan and the club,” suggested Fernandes. Carol D’Costa, of Margao, echoes the same sentiments. “I love football and I don’t mind going to the stands to watch Indian football. However I’m not passionate about any of the Goan I-league clubs.” He pointed to I-League clubs like Bengaluru FC, Pune FC & Shillong Lajong, which have large fan followings and said, “imagine if they were named after their owners for example Jindal FC or Piramal FC”. The I-League clubs in Goa never attracted a great many fans, media and sponsors and the introduction of the ISL could well be the nail in the coffin for the I-league here. The writing was on the wall for Goan I-league clubs as newbies like Bengaluru FC & Pune FC set new trends, with the professional set ups and spending capacity. Varun Carvalho, Singer/Composer of the FC Goa anthem ‘Forca Goa’ and the man responsible for engaging crowds in the ISL matches with the support of his band, feels “the reason for the success of ISL was because every Goan could connect with the team and the loyalties were united. Entertainment, foreign stars and quality football on the field also played a huge role.” “I-league has very little to offer in terms of entertainment and excitement. Besides that there is no branding and marketing of the I-league, the quality of the game ain’t that great as well, so it is no surprise that the fans do not hit the stadium” added Varun. I-league has little funding and the All India Football Federation seems

disinterested in promoting the league centrally, with the onus solely on the clubs to revive the league’s fortunes. It makes it especially difficult for the Goan clubs to spend money when there is no return, and many owners have gone on record to say that they are doing it solely for the love of the game. Highlighting the problems, Sunando Dhar, CEO I-league says, “ISL was a huge success because the central marketing team did a great job but for us to replicate it in the I-league is difficult, as there are resources problems.” “If the quality of the game is good, crowds will definitely turn up. All other marketing activities have a short-term impact. It’s the quality on the pitch that matters”, concluded Dhar. But one senior official of an I-league club who didn’t want to be named out of fear of AIFF reprisals disagreed, saying, “If the AIFF keeps banking on good football and does nothing to promote the I-league it will slowly but surely die.” The AIFF has silenced voices that have spoken out against the ISL, and

many believe Churchill Bros got the axe for bad mouthing the I-league. “It is true, the ISL was formed to kill the I-league and the AIFF is making sure its mission is accomplished by completely neglecting the I-league,” added the senior official. Goan teams have done well on the field and there is nothing wrong with the quality of football. However, they have not yet succeeded in rekindling enthusiasm amongst fans, which is not possible without the support and financial backing for the I-league from the AIFF. 

‘Kama, Interrupted’

In case you’re wondering, that’s short for Kama Sutra!

I

By Perin Ilavia

t might just be pure coincidence that the wonderful multimedia art exhibition ‘Kama, Interrupted’ starts on the eve of Valentine’s Day. But this show, with its relationship to what is perhaps the most important and beautiful book ever written on erotic love, the Kama Sutra, is a lovely way to commemorate the popular holiday. Eighteen Goan artists will be displaying some 75 artworks (two to four works each) in one of the state’s largest curated shows to date. Dr. Sudhir Kakar, an acclaimed psychoanalyst, writer and coauthor of the latest translation of the Kama Sutra, will inaugurate the exhibition on Feb. 13, at 6.30 pm at Gallery Gitanjali, Fontainhas, Panjim. Some of the most talented and sought after artists in Goa will be participating, including Vamona Navelcar, Nirupa Naik, Francis Desousa, Verodina Ferrao, Rajeshree Thakker, Katharina Poggendorf-Kakar, Mohan Naik, Viraj Naik, Vitesh Naik, Pradeep Naik, Praveen Naik, Vasudev Shetye, Osborne Carvalho, Shripad Gurav, Aadhi Vishal, Manjunaath Naik, Kedar Dhondu and Ramdas Gadekar. Dr. Sudhir Kakar collaborated with Wendy Doniger, one of the world’s foremost Sanskrit scholars, in a translation of the Kama Sutra, written in the third century by the Hindu philosopher Vatsyayana and dealing with a sex, desire, love and pleasure. “The best known English translation is by Richard Burton which is full of errors. He pads the original Kama Sutra by inserting portions of a commentary written a thousand years later and the reason why Oxford World Classics asked Wendy Doniger and me to do a new translation is, our translation is also a scholarly one in the sense that the book is placed in its full context, newly translated into clear, vivid, sexually frank

English,” Sudhir explained. “If Vatsyayana were alive today, he would have been the publisher of Playboy, not Penthouse,” Sudhir said recently in an interview conducted with Michelle Caswell of the Asia Society. It was this book published in 2002 that inspired the curator of the show Apoorva Kulkarni to approach the subject. Choosing from older and younger artists of Goa to “reinterpret” the Kama Sutra, “the ‘interruption’ alluded to in the title of the exhibition is both thematic and representational”, says Apoorva. Vamona Navelcar’s “Homage to Vatsayana” features his inimitable style of unending lines. Nirupa Naik’s “Kamadenu” has interspersed figures

of man and woman in a blue pallet. Francis Desousa’s ‘Alternate Arrangement” has figures in assorted positions, plus calligraphy, symbols and objects in an enchanting pallet. Rajeshree Thakker’s “Details of Kama” in mix media comes forth like a collage, with shades of grey and white, with dabs of colour, and background script. Mohan Naik unclothes his couple, with his pet subject a goat, in the foreground. Katharina Poggendorf-Kakar has

four wall hangings using as medium chillies, copper, acrylic, lacquer and ash on plywood. The hangings are titled “Desire - Am I Cooked Rice For You?”, “Yoni”, “Empty Middle – Do You Give an Orgasm To Your Wife?", and “Sensuality – Do You See My Need For

Intimacy?” There are also two book installations: Kama Sutra, a copper breast digital photo projection, and “Is there a way to rescue eroticism from raw desire?” The latter, with its depiction of several sexual themes, comes closest among exhibition’s works to a visual interpretation of the Kama Sutra. Moving to the younger artists, Viraj Naik juxtaposes man with animal head, with the subtle placement of a woman’s

hand and the decorative background in watercolour and graphite. Vitesh Naik’s “Details of Naked Truth” echoes reflections of men. Pradeep Naik’s sketch of a torso in black and white, and Praveen Naik’s works in shades of brown in “Two Poles”, focus on the ‘self’. Vasudev Shetye has a study of man and woman. Designs on the grey and black intricately designed background and figures draw attention. Osborne Carvalho’s “Detail of Kumpa” is a study of a woman’s face bathed in ecstasy. Verodina Ferrao has a sculpture called “It’s All in the Mind” in stone. Shripad Gurav’s forte is caricatures of Goa’s people, and his depiction of the posture of the couple is suggestive. “In Breath” by Aadhi Vishal is true to his minimalistic form. Manjunaath Naik’s sketch “Detail of Procreation” is highlighted with the word LOVE in red. Kedar Dhondu’s has created a surrealistic figure in “Transaction from Cool to Warm”. And Ramdas Gadekar depicts “Let’s Make it a Night to Remember” in a paper assemblage. For me, it’s the titles of the paintings, more than the visuals, that extensively interpret each artist’s language on love, sex and desire. The exhibition is supported and endorsed by Panjim-based businessman and art collector Gautam Suresh Amonkar, who states, “When Apoorva approached me and explained the true nuances of the ancient text, it was a revelation. I supported this event as the theme appealed to me, also to increase awareness of this ancient text to people in Goa, and promote Goan artists.” On exhibit till 17th February - at Gallery Gitanjali, FontainhasPanjim
