Along with Christmas and New Year’s, there are a great many festive events all over the state that make the tourist season the very picture of vibrant. All kinds of restaurants, public gardens and hotels hold events to celebrate the much awaited tourist season, dressing up their respective spaces as best as they can, as if to go to a big happy wedding. But even with all the food and drink and people, what would that wedding be without music? As music lovers and a residents of Goa, we are always excited to go out and find the new music that the big touristic Goan wedding brings every year. In recent times, however, the music runs pretty much year round. And Goa
Music in the Sunny State is becoming more and more a hub of sorts for musicians and artists. A quick glance at the current music scene in Goa reveals several niche acts and their respective niche audiences, which are in fact quite diverse. From psytrance parties in Anjuna to blues-jazz improv in Betalbatim, Goa suddenly seems to have it all. From the late 1970s, Goa has been synonymous with psychedelic trance, often dubbed 'Goa Trance'. It’s a genre of music that is now well known all over the world. The pioneers of this movement are many TURN TO PAGE 5

between organisers, and of the kind of money that can be made from it. In the last few years, these extraordinary EDM festivals have attracted tens of thousands of revelers from all over India. Being seen at Sunburn has almost become a status marking rite, signifying a new ‘cool’ that young metro dwellers in India, flock to Goa to achieve. Tarun Shahani from Mumbai, an independent DJ who has played at Sunburn
From page 3 'druggie' foreigners who were drawn to India by its spirituality and to Goa by its untouched beauty. Goa Gil, a personality who’s been interviewed for several Goa documentary films on hippie culture, is one of the ‘grandaddies’ of this music in Goa. His work has spawned many eclectic 'electric' projects. Although the full-moon raves where this kind of music was born are not easily accessible anymore, the music has evolved into electric lounge and mainstream club acts that can be found not only in Anjuna but throughout the state. The ‘disco’ legends of Goa, Titos and Mambos arose in the wake of the psytrance movement and opened the door to mainstream club music. upper middle class Goan youth
and the occasional Russian tourist. Their legendary status and the evolution of the Baga tourist scene now sees them play Bollywood remixes as a norm these days, catering to the new crowd of disco-loving Indian tourists. These two gave rise to an assortment of little clubs all over North Goa and now also in the fast developing South, which plays the same popular, mainstream music that can be found in clubs all over the world. They host mostly homegrown DJs and have made Dj-ing a very viable profession amongst young Goan youth. There’s almost one in every family today! The ‘electric party’scene is kept alive in Goa today by festivals like Sunburn and now SuperSonic. This year, they will apparently take place at more or less the same time, which gives a clear indication of the kind of competition that occurs
for the last 5 years, talked to us about the musical side of the events. He will perform a 2-hour set on day two at SuperSonic, playing psy trance and techno. He says, “I’m quite excited about the lineup at the festival this year. It’s one of the best we’ve had at SuperSonic.” This year will feature international artists like the Stantun Warriors (UK), Hollen (Europe), Karl Craig, Heartrobe and Goldie.

6 Music & Nightlife DJ duo Pig & Dan to set console on fire at Marbela Beach White Party
From page 4 Parallel to the club and electro scene is the newly bloomed blues-jazz-indie music scene, encouraged largely by Art Escape in Benaulim (South Goa). Art Escape has been a haven for many independent blues artists like Cliff de Souza , Elvis Lobo and Shane Ballantine and has helped their music proliferate to an audience beyond the stray indie enthusiast. They recently held two big music festivals in Goa, one, a two-day indie music festival in Verna, one of a kind and probably the first indie fest in Goa, featuring musicians from all over Asia. They also held a jazz festival of 3 days, from the 28th to 30th November, another extraordinary event. Apart from this, they hold regular live music nights on Saturdays at Baywatch in South Goa, which feature singer songwriter original music and covers of much loved alternative bands, often from out of state. Pop-up bands and musical acts of this genre proliferate during the run of the Arpora Saturday night Bazaar as well, which sees very interesting and inspiring seasonal collaborations between touring international artists and local ones. The Bazaar in 2012 saw a collaboration between a French electric duo and a young Indian folk singer which had the entire audience enraptured with an electronic ‘Hare Krishna Hare Ram’, complete with a fire dancers for a side act. This music caters to those in search of ‘true music’, the ones who understand music not only at a sensual, but also an intellectual level. Says Cliff DeSouza, one of the prominent musicians on the indie-blues-jazz scene, “I love playing the blues on the acoustic guitar, it feels more raw and authentic than the electric”. Another up-and-coming talent to look out for this season in Goa is Rupa Rao, with her unique and haunting blend of
eastern and western elements. The effort that the blues and jazz artists put in while popularising their own genres in Goa, has also opened doors for other musical genres. One often hears of one-off Trip Hop and Noise performances in remote corners of the tourist belt. Joanne, Anina and Joe and Vijay Xavier are other artists to watch out for in this genre. They appear at places like Shamba and SeaRock in Anjuna and One Degree in Vagator. Goan jazz legend Colin D’Cruz has done as much as anyone to further the cause of jazz and blues in the state, both through his music and his website chronicling the best
No one hosts an exclusive party quite like Marbela Beach Resort. The stunning beach-side property in Morjim has announced its sensational Ola Fiesta Blanca – The White Party – to jump start a season of pulsating parties featuring world renowned artists. Slated for December 14, 2014 from 6pm onwards, the caressing shores of north Goa will infuse a Mediterranean resort-style ambience to the scene. With chic white décor and beautiful people, Marbela Beach Resort’s white parties have been the talk of the town each year. This time, the highlights of the show will be performances by international DJ duo Pig & Dan, and Drums On Live! Pig & Dan have created a signature style in the electronic music scene. Since the turn of the century, these two phenomenal acts have combined forces to create tracks that have raised the bar on ‘top lists’ around the world. jazz and blues artists in Goa (jazzgoa. com). The third and most clearly defined musical space in Goa is the ‘nostalgia’ space. Almost every family in Goa also has a guitarist, perhaps stemming from the colonial tradition of including music in every pupil’s compulsory education. Every upper class Casa in Colonial Goa had a music room, and almost every family today with colonial history has a resident musician. These music aficionados often pursue music part time, giving their main attention to the family business or to more socially ‘approved’ professions like law and medicine. But this part-time energy itself is enough to sustain several 3 to 5 piece bands that practice in garages and private living rooms throughout the year and play at weddings and events during the ‘season’. During this tourist season, not only the seasonal restaurants but the year round restaurants too, open their doors to these bands and to other ‘live music’ acts which are often not live at all, but consist of ‘one-man bands’ and lone singers armed with their karaoke collection. They usually set up for a 3-hour set at a restaurant, often rotating at 2-3 popular joints in the week. The key to the popularity of these ‘artists’ lies not in their originality or risk taking approach, but in the fact that they know just what to play to revive the nostalgia that the local Goan public holds so dear. Year after year, from the late 1980s on, Goans flock to the sounds of ‘Feeling hot hot hot’, ‘Everything I do’, ‘Eye of the Tiger’ and ‘Give me hope Joanna’ that are played in every restaurant, at every event and at every New Year’s Eve, and delivered in a way that is as similar as possible to the original track. And the public never tires of it. New party numbers that are the flavour of the year, ranging from Daler Mehendi’s
‘Bolo Tararara’ to ‘Gangnam Style’ are added and dropped every year depending on their popularity with the crowd. It is interesting to see that The Eagles and Bryan Adams have persevered on these ‘Goa Top 10’populist set lists for decades while they’ve lost their standing in much of the rest of the world! Every December sees the return of countless NRI families and working youth that want nothing more than to relive the days gone by, to the sounds of the same ‘feel good’ songs that played in those beautiful days of their youth. It is this crowd that provides the reliable audience to the opportunist ‘karaoke’ live musicians. When asked why he plays music, Andrew Norman, a British musician who visits Goa every year, doesn’t spout endless intellectual soliloquies about music, but simply says, “I likes to make people dance'’. Spaces like Cavalla in Baga and Sofala in Nerul are platforms for musicians who also play populist nostalgia, but often with a more ‘classy’ twist. Sofala has opened its doors to many a jazz improv band that plays originals, too, but Cavalla tends to stay in the mainstream genre, catering to returning locals and to tourists who want just to let their hair down, dance and have a good time, and don’t really care about originality of composition. Restaurants and event spaces all over Goa that cater to this crowd see bands that perform mostly cover songs in a very ‘homage’ fashion. This music aims at creating an environment rather than at making musical history. And it hardly matters if that environment is the same across the ages and across restaurants. Goa never gets tired of this fare. Along with the usual Cafreal and Butter Garlic, it forms their staple diet! But nevertheless, with exposure to many new channels for music like YouTube and a growing array of local establishments not afraid to experiment, the musical palate in Goa is growing new taste buds, and becoming more multi dimensional.

Keeping Alive The Richest Traditions of Awadhi Cuisine Not All North Indian Food Is Created Equal By Shubham Gupta
G
uarded by the Himalayas and nurtured by the rivers Ganges and Yamuna, Awadh in its time was the perfect place to establish a kingdom. Located in the northern plains of what is today Uttar Pradesh, Awadh was more than just a fertile mass of land and a strategic location for battle. The fertility yielded in agriculture and agriculture yielded in food that still is considered one of the richest cuisines in all of India. Visitors to Lucknow (the epicentre of Awadhi cuisine), of course, would have no problem finding Awadhi delights that are true to their Mughlai roots. But what about visitors to our fun and sunny Goa? In a tourist belt riddled with fakes, wannabes and culinary imposters of every sort, enter Masala Art, the delightful new restaurant at the Acacia Luxury Hotel in Candolim that most definitely stays loyal to the eminently royal flavours of Awadh. Under the expert guidance of Executive Chef Bisnu, the offerings here are fit not just for a Goan foodie, an Indian tourist or a
foreign sojourner, but for a Mughlai king himself. Awadhi cuisine can be dated back to the time when India was first invaded by the Mughals, and it contains many influences from Mughlai cooking techniques and spices. It’s known for the ‘dum’ technique of cooking marinated meats over a slow fire. And it is world famous for such dishes as kebab, biryani, keema and nihari. Allow me, if you will, to take you through a small virtual field trip through the Awadhi kitchen at Masala art, which is emerging as one of the top North Indian restaurants in Goa. It’s located in the bustling main beach road in Candolim inside the highly inviting Acacia Hotel (home to a number of interesting restaurants featuring cuisine from different parts of the world). Chef Bisnu works his culinary magic so that you can truly grasp the flavours behind the history of Awadh. The field trip begins with a rich and flavourful soup loaded with almond paste and the flavour of cardamom. The cardamom complements the almonds seamlessly; it breaks through with a perfectly appetising texture and
nutritious vegetable stock. Our guides in the kitchen call it ‘Badam Aur Elaichi Ka Shorba’. Next up in today’s expedition is an appetiser called ‘Dahi ke Kebab’, a crispy yet tender kebab made out of hung-curd, ginger, Bengal gram, green chillies, chaat masala, cardamom and other Indian spices. Served with a refreshing cilantro and mint chutney, the kebabs were soft and the curd boasted an unusual tanginess. Moving on to the main course, Chef Bisnu prepares a rich speciality called Hasrat-e-Husn, consisting of thick saffron-rich quorma gravy with perfectly carved heart shaped pieces of paneer. How he stuffed the dry fruits inside the whole piece of paneer is a mystery. Alongside you may try the Dal Makhanwali (Makhani), black lentils cooked overnight with fenugreek enriched with fresh cream and Murghaloo, and the chicken tikka with stir fired baby potatoes, cherry tomatoes, green chillies and traditional pickled spices. The loaded offerings would go perfectly well with breads straight out
from a traditional tandoor. Some of the major breads you will find here are warqi paratha (made out of flaky refined floor), Kandhari Naan (bread stuffed with nuts and topped with chopped green onions), and tandoori roti. To cleanse your palate while switching between the mains, you can try a spoonful of burrani raita, yogurt with Kashmiri red chilli powder and garlic. The showstopper of the Awadhi field trip is something Chef Bisnu calls Zauk e Shahi, which technically is Gulab Jamun (deep fried condensed milk dumplings) on a bed of chilled rabri. Try this and you will never think of Gulab Jamun in quite the same way. So if you don’t have the time to go up north (WAY north), just head to north Goa, look for Acacia (situated on the Fort Aguada Road) and relive the historic significance of the flavours of Awadh.

Global Status Report on road safety in 2010 said India had the highest number of road accidents, with the number reaching a staggering 130,037. Second is China, which recorded just over half that number, at 70,134, and Brazil coming in third, with 36,499 accidents. Of course, in India’s case this is only the number of accidents that are officially reported, so the real number is even higher. Here in Goa, every year thousands of additional vehicles appear on the roads. In 2012 Goa had total of 7,90,000, and by 2013 it added 76,000 cars, for a total of 8,66,000 vehicles. The National Crime Records Bureau reported that in 2012, there were 4,288 accidents in Goa with 302 fatalities. And a year later Goa experienced 4,293 road accidents, with 269 fatalities. That’s a death on the road every 33 hours! Yes overall one can agree that the roads are getting slowly better in Goa. Unfortunately, however, the size of the cars and engines are growing faster than the infrastructure needed to support them. A 40-foot container truck must have much stronger asphalt and better engineered curves to support its size and speed. In addition, drivers’ attitudes don’t change much. It would be nice if authorities understood that even more important than fines would be a focus on education and awareness to improve driving habits. South Goa residents experience many odd things on the roads, such as a leftturn curve on the highway that in time has been converted into to a four-way junction, with no proper signs or speed
limit. It’s a place known to locals as “Char Rasta”. Drivers and residents report that local buses stop in the middle of the junction to pick up or drop passengers, interfering with the traffic and creating a blind spot for drivers and pedestrians who try to cross the street. Several accidents have been seen at this spot. The junction is the main crossing to the beach areas, and also leads to the five-star Lalit hotel. After crossing this dangerous junction, Lalit’s guests must face a backbreaking crumbling road for the next few kilometres, before reaching the resort (where at this point a little relaxation is necessary!). The narrow road is elevated above rice fields, making it even scarier as at some points falling would entail a two- to three-metre drop. The Lalit PR manager informs that the hotel itself has been working with authorities for the past two years to have the road fixed. The tender passed and work was supposed to begin in October but didn’t. Now this manager is afraid that political changes will cause even further delay. Personally, for me the lack of understanding or awareness is exemplified by the local buses. No use of indicators, dangerous and reckless driving, unnecessary usage of high beams, stopping in the middle of the road or just using their ear-piercing horn cause me to shiver every time I see a bus ramming down the road. Last year a shop owner in Palolem, Ms. Sablin, was one of many to be forced off the Palolem beach road by a racing bus. Luckily she moved in time as she almost ended in a side ditch with her scooter. When she filed an official complaint with police, the officer told her that unfortunately not enough people
complain in order to make a real change. Do big vehicle drivers fully understand the responsibility they hold for other people’s lives? Another major problem, of course, is something every responsible driver in Goa laments: the overuse of high beams at night. High beams blind drivers moving in the opposite direction, and should not be used as a default. They are to be used on unlit roads where there is no oncoming traffic. And that’s not to mention unmarked speed breakers, which are responsible for a great many traffic fatalities each year in Goa. Many of these breakers do not meet official guidelines for height, width and signage, and it’s no wonder so many people have died because of these bumps that are meant to save lives but instead end up taking them. India is the biggest democracy in the world. Change can happen but not by accepting the situation as is. To make change, we need to understand that things can be different, roads can be widened and properly marked, drivers can use indicators, car horns can be regulated, high beams can be used sparingly, speed breakers can be marked and
pedestrians can have safe crossing. A great example of how to do things correctly is Panjim. On many streets, sidewalks are in place and road signs are in use. Walking or driving in the city, if not exactly a delight, is no nightmare either. So if you are experiencing any offensive behaviour or a dangerous situation, bring it up, don’t accept it, make the change, ask why and try to create a better neighborhood for yourself and others. Buses should use indicators and stop only in designated areas, and large vehicles should give right of way to scooters and pedestrians. Kindness on the roads can be achieved! By Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello
Life is a precious gift, and that doesn’t have to change just because a person is disabled. Psychologist Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello delves into various problems faced by the disabled, importance of family support and community efforts that can make the world a better place for them.
A
s I was buying leafy spinach from my regular vendor, I was overwhelmed with the sight of her right limb that stopped short at the elbow. The vendor cajoled me to buy a dozen bananas and I gave in to her subtle demands, overcome by empathy for the disabled who eke their living. We may not realize the challenges of the disabled, the paraplegic who cannot walk/run, the autistic child who requires special schooling, the blind individual who cannot appreciate the beauty of the rainbow, or the individual whose speech impairment keeps her from her dream job. To quote the great scientist Stephen Hawking who suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, “It is a waste of time to be angry about my disability. One has to get on with life and I haven’t done badly. People won't have time for you if you are always angry or complaining. ” Here are a few cases where disability has not interfered with important life decisions, be it marriage or employment or creative pursuits. The names have been changed to respect their privacy. Patricia, now in her 50s says, “Joseph, my husband met with a (major) accident when we were engaged. Though my parents coaxed me to marry someone else, I just couldn’t get myself to do that. I knew what I was getting myself into. Joseph has to move in a wheelchair at all times, and I had to give up on many family gatherings and functions to avoid sarcastic and hurtful
comments from others.” Or take the case of polio-affected Samantha, who never let her condition keep her from leading a productive life. She says, “Ever since I was a little child, I found it difficult to manage simple things like carrying heavy things or parcels in my hands or even dressing.” She continues, “As I grew up, I have got used to my handicap. I passed my graduation in Arts and got a government job as a clerk.” Her dad says, “She loves gardening and spends most of her leisure hours pottering in the garden.” He adds that he and his wife continue to look after her needs, both physical and emotional. Frederika Menezes, a cerebral palsy patient who lives her life in a wheelchair, has written 2 books - ‘The Portrait’ (collection of poems) and ‘The Pepperns and wars of the mind’ (fiction/ fantasy novel). A 28-year-old, Neena, married her sweetheart of 5 years. She says, “My marriage began at the altar saying ‘I do’ to a man whom many referred to as cripple. I have been married for about 6 years now. My husband cannot walk and though his movements
are restricted, I have no regrets. Every day is a new day and a big challenge. I have a 2-year-old healthy daughter.” Many of these families with differently abled children/family members have made life-long adjustments. Marlene Ritchie, an international educator in her published work (2013) says, “Families must learn to tolerate, accept and hopefully celebrate children who are not what they originally had in mind.” Clifford De Silva, a psychologist from Navelim says, “A father of a girl born without legs and only two short stumps for hands said to me, ‘She does not think that she is abnormal. I will bring her up to think and believe in all that she can achieve rather than what she can’t.” Adds Clifford, “I was very impressed with the father’s words. That is the best attitude that a family can adopt to foster independence in a child while supporting her/him emotionally.” “Today, the same girl kneads flour, can stitch clothes and has two hollow wooden legs which she wears with straps from her shoulders. She has passed her SSCE via National Open School and took bakery as one of her subjects,” remarks Clifford. Though the differently abled face many challenges such as discrimination, segregation and isolation, they can cope with their disabilities by finding employment, or exploring their talents. Community interventions have been directed to provide better facilities for the disabled and create awareness among the general public. Disability Rights Association of Goa, headed by Avelino De Sa has been working for the upliftment of the disabled. From holding protest dharnas for insensitivity
towards the disabled to fighting for their rights such as parking in public places, this organization is planning to launch massive awareness campaign for the promotion of inclusion of persons with disability in the society on 3rd December, it being World Disabled Day. Jacinta Santamaria’s (special educator) short film on autism won the 2nd place in the ‘We Care International Film Festival Award’ this year. Schools for special children teach them useful skills and educate them in a supportive environment. Daddy’s Home Special School (Margao), Shree Gujarati Samaj School for the Deaf and Dumb (Davorlim, Margao), Disha Charitable Trust - School for mentally retarded and slow learners (Panjim), Asha Deep Special School (Vasco), Lokvishwas School for the handicapped (Ponda), St. Francis Xavier Education Cum Vocational Centre for the handicapped (Old Goa) and Sanjay School and Sanjeevani School (Alto Porvorim) have been doing a commendable job. One major challenge in the years ahead: Making Goa’s cities disabled friendly. That means lowering sidewalk curbs to accommodate wheel chairs, erecting ramps, installing elevators, among other measures. To be sure, we’re a long way off from this reality that is now the norm in developed nations, especially since facilities for those without disabilities (sidewalks, roads, etc) are themselves inadequate. ------For any queries/rights of the differently abled, you may contact Avelino De Sa, C/o Star Investments, Opp. Head Post Office, Panaji, Goa - 403001 Email - drag.goa@gmail.com Phone - 0832-2427160

Fiction
ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE
By Anthony Doerr Scribner With brisk chapters and sumptuous language, Doerr’s second novel follows two characters whose paths will intersect in the waning days of World War II: an orphaned engineering prodigy recruited into the Nazi ranks, and a blind French girl who joins the Resistance. Tackling questions of survival, endurance and moral obligations during wartime, the book is as precise and artful and ingenious as the puzzle boxes the heroine’s locksmith father builds for her. Impressively, it is also a vastly entertaining feat of storytelling.
DEPT. OF SPECULATION
By Jenny Offill Alfred A. Knopf Offill’s slender and cannily paced novel, her second, assembles fragments, observations, meditations and different points of view to chart the course of a troubled marriage. Wry and devastating in equal measure, the novel is a cracked mirror that throws light in every direction — on music and literature; science and philosophy; marriage and motherhood and infidelity; and especially love and the grueling rigors of domestic life. Part elegy and part primal scream, it’s a profound and unexpectedly buoyant performance.
EUPHORIA
By Lily King Atlantic Monthly Press In 1933, the anthropologist Margaret Mead took a field trip to the Sepik River in New Guinea with her second husband; they met and collaborated with the man who would become her third. King has taken the known details of that actual event and created this exquisite novel, her fourth, about the rewards and disappointments of intellectual ambition and physical desire. The result is an intelligent, sensual tale told with a suitable mix of precision and heat.
FAMILY LIFE
By Akhil Sharma W. W. Norton & Company Sharma’s austere but moving novel tells the semiautobiographical story of a family that immigrates from India to Queens, and has just begun to build a new life when the elder son suffers severe brain damage in a swimming pool accident. Deeply unnerving and gorgeously tender, the book chronicles how grief renders the parents unable to cherish and raise their other son; love, it suggests, becomes warped and jagged and even seemingly vanishes in the midst of mourning.
REDEPLOYMENT
By Phil Klay The Penguin Press In this brilliant debut story collection, Klay — a former Marine who served in Iraq — shows what happens when young, heavily armed Americans collide with a fractured and deeply foreign country few of them even remotely understand. Iraq comes across not merely as a theater of war but as a laboratory for the human condition in extremis. The collection is hilarious, biting, whipsawing and sad: the best thing written so far on what the war did to people’s souls.
Each year, the editors of the New York Times Book Review choose what they believe are the year’s 10 best books. Are they always right? Perhaps not. Are there many book that deserve to be on this list but are not? Of course. Still, it’s worth taking a look at their choices, and even more worth picking up a copy of many of these books. Read on!

CAN’T WE TALK ABOUT SOMETHING MORE PLEASANT?
By Roz Chast Bloomsbury Cartoons, it turns out, are tailor-made for the absurdities of old age, illness and dementia. In Chast’s devastating and sublime graphic memoir, the odd dramas and repetitive minutiae find perfect expression in her signature antic drawings as she describes helping her parents navigate their final years — from packing up their cluttered Brooklyn apartment to getting a seat at the “right” table in the nursing home. No one has perfect parents, and no one can write a perfect book about them. But Chast has come close.
ON IMMUNITY: An Inoculation
By Eula Biss Graywolf Press In this spellbinding blend of memoir, science journalism and literary criticism, Biss unpacks what the fear of vaccines tells us about larger anxieties involving purity, contamination and interdependency. Deeply researched and anchored in Biss’s own experiences as a new mother, this ferociously intelligent book is itself an inoculation against bad science and superstition, and a reminder that we owe one another our lives.
PENELOPE FITZGERALD: A Life
By Hermione Lee Alfred A. Knopf The life and times of that elusive, original miracle worker, the English novelist and biographer Penelope Fitzgerald, have been brilliantly captured by Lee, previously the author of masterly portraits of Virginia Woolf, Willa Cather and Edith Wharton. Growing up steeped in literature but sidetracked by the vicissitudes of life, Fitzgerald published her first book at 58 and did not become famous until she was 80. But her fiction, when it finally emerged, had a tamped-down force and intense compression, as if the decades-long wait had worked its own clarifying, crystallizing magic.
THE SIXTH EXTINCTION: An Unnatural History
By Elizabeth Kolbert Henry Holt & Company Kolbert reports from the front lines of the violent collision between civilization and our planet’s ecosystem — from the Great Barrier Reef to her own backyard — in this, her third, book. Traveling to some of the world’s remotest corners, she examines how man-made climate change threatens to eliminate 20 to 50 percent of all living species on earth within this century. This is environmental writing at its most rigorous and richly detailed — and as riveting as any thriller.
THIRTEEN DAYS IN SEPTEMBER: Carter, Begin, and Sadat at Camp David
By Lawrence Wright Alfred A. Knopf In 1978, over 13 days at Camp David, Anwar Sadat, Menachem Begin and Jimmy Carter hammered out a peace agreement between Israel and Egypt that remains the most profound diplomatic achievement to emerge from the Mideast conflict. In a fascinating account of the talks, Wright combines history, politics and, most of all, a gripping drama of three clashing personalities into a tale of constant plot twists and dark humor. He reminds us that Carter’s visionary idealism and doggedness represented an act of surpassing political courage.

Premium Farmers Markets Begin at The Grand Hyatt
T
By Sapna Shahani
hose of you who think a farmers market is a congregation of gaoti vegetable sellers may be surprised at the kind of event planned for this Sunday December 14 at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Bambolim. Farmers markets around the world and more recently in Indian metro cities have been associated with small-scale producers of healthy, organic foods, handmade crafts and natural fiber clothing. They bring together progressive communities that prefer healthy and eco-friendly lifestyles and often can afford the somewhat higher price tags associated with it. Restaurateur and TV show host Karen Anand is bringing her version of a farmers market to Goa this Sunday after a successful run in Pune and other cities. The daylong market from 11am to 7pm will feature tens of stalls featuring specialty foods, teas, wines, cheeses,
restaurants and more. Many well-known national and some local brands will be participating such as Sattvic Foods, a healthy snack company launched in Panjim recently and Natti’s Naturals, a health food store in Anjuna. Then there’s agave liquor brand Desmondji and Tea Trunk whose founders are also residents of Goa. Karen Anand will also launch her new line of gourmet products in Goa at the market under the brand KA Gourmet along with gift boxes for the festive season. The Grand Hyatt plans to continue organizing similar markets on their picturesque and sprawling lawns every Sunday, and will extend invites to vendors beyond the food and beverage industries. At the market, patrons would have the opportunity to explore new restaurants and old favourites in a ‘pop up’ experience. The hotel will also be showcasing some of their famed specialty cuisines including Indian, Arabic, Asian, Italian, Grills and Desserts. The Farmers’ Market will aim to attract everyone from chefs, restaurateurs, passionate amateur cooks and people who just happen to love eating and drinking and those looking out for a splendid time with families and friends. Karen Anand hopes “to create a market which becomes a repository of culinary knowledge and understanding. It’s a place to explore, to ask questions, to discover new flavours, to savour a unique atmosphere and to have fun!” “When we heard of this initiative by Karen Anand, which we believe is a very strong and innovative concept, we immediately foresaw
the tremendous potential it had for Goa, who has never witnessed anything like this before. In the past, the Farmers’ Market has demonstrated huge potential and success, and we are certain that the event at our property too will see huge traction from locals and also national and international tourists who would be in Goa during that time – December being one of Goa’s lucrative tourist months,” shares GM Jaco LeRoux The hotel aims to create a fun family environment with fun activities for kids, along with live music by the sensational and popular international music performers Jovan and Thelma. To ensure ease and comfort for parents of young children, Grand Hyatt Goa has sanctioned a play area for kids. Guests will also have access to the free-form outdoor swimming pool at the hotel. Best of all, there’s no entry fee! Beyond the Sunday farmers market events, the Grand Hyatt is upping the ante with different themes on other days too. On Mondays guests can ‘Go Fish’ with local fishermen and come back to have their catch cooked fresh. On Tuesdays the Indian restaurant ‘Chulha’ will lay out a culinary map of India and invite people in to learn how to make a dish, one-on-one from the chefs. Wednesdays are fashion-themed nights, where local artists and designers feature their latest collections. There will be live seafood stalls on Thursdays with live music by international duo Jovan and Thelma singing popular classics. Their new ‘Australian Bush BBQ’ themed restaurant will be highlighted on Fridays and Saturdays feature the sailing center, which is the only one within a five-star hotel property in the country. Families can learn how to sail, do wind surfing, kayaking, and groups can do team building exercises as well. The novel aspect of the BBQ theme events are that visitors from outside the hotel are welcome to book a picnic setting, where everything from the rug to sit on to the picnic basket is laid out for you. All that’s left is to order your grilled vegetable or meat of choice. There’s an exciting New Year’s Eve masquerade style party planned as well where delightful stages, gardens and unexpected performers will be set up, along the lines of international theatrical spectacles such as Russia’s ‘Midsummer Nights Dream’ and the Tomorrow Land festival. The evening is designed to feel like an escape from reality. Revelers will be able to borrow or buy costumes and get professional makeup and hair done at the in-house Snip salon to transform themselves into a surreal persona for one night.
