From page 3 classical line-up – piano, bass, drums – from top to bottom, free from any stylistic constraint. The band’s music, entirely acoustic, is constantly evolving. Plaistow’s music is often dubbed “post jazz”. However, according to Vladimir Kozlov of The Moscow News, “what Plaistow actually does often defies genre definitions and could be anything from minimalism to improvisation.” Plaistow will be performing at the festival in collaboration with Pro Helvetia - Swiss Arts Council. Line up • Johann Bourquenez, piano • Vincent Ruiz, doublebass • Cyril Bondi, drums

YURI HONING QUARTET Yuri Honing is one of Holland’s most important saxophone players, with touring experience in over 70 countries and a discography of almost 30 titles. Honing has played and recorded with such greats as Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden and Paul Bley. In 2001, Honing received the Edison

Jazz Award (Dutch Grammy) for his recording Seven, featuring Paul Bley, Gary Peacock and Paul Motion. In 2009 he released for Universal ‘Phase Five’, a pop album where he collaborated with internationally acclaimed pop star Sarah Bettens. DAY 2: 1st December

ELVIS LOBO PROJECT JAZZ VERSION Guitarist Elvis Lobo has represented Goa all over the world and he’s clearly a shining star on the Goan music scene. The Elvis Lobo Project is releasing a new album featuring more than 25 musicians. They’re creating unique rhythms & sounds of fusion music for “The Goa Sound.” This will be the first kind of original world music sound coming out of Goa. Their world sounds feature blues, jazz, funk, lounge and the Afro & Indian experience. Get a taste of this fabulous phenomenon at the Jazz Festival! Line up • Elvis Lobo – Guitar • Victor Netesov – Trumpet • Joe Ferrao – Bass

• Vivek Philip – Percussions • Samir Alvarez - Keys • Bosco D’souza – Drums

Featured artist • Derek Julian – Living Legend Guitar from Pune

LIVING LEGENDS OF JAZZ -HFT – (HIGH F**ING TIME) No two of HFT’s performances are ever the same. They draw inspiration from everywhere, and believe that music speaks of the here and now.

HFT plays world jazz, a savvy, urbane style of jazz that is warm and versatile. The trio is made up of AJ on the guitar, Lew on bass and Shullai on drums.

The band has been influenced by many greats, from Miles Davis to Baaba Maal. But they’ve taken the old and created something entirely new. A not-to-be-missed musical experience. Line up • Arjun Sen (AJ)– Guitar • Lew Hilt– Bass • Sam Shullai– Drums & Percussions

HEADLINE ACT ERIK TRUFFAZ QUARTET Erik Truffaz is one of today’s most famous European jazz trumpet players, having released 17 critically acclaimed albums with Blue Note Records and getting standing ovations worldwide. He’s a conservatorytrained and award-winning trumpeter, originally inspired by Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue album. His albums go from straight-ahead to contemporary jazz, incorporating drum’n’bass, pop and hip-hop rhythms. His legendary line-up has been touring together worldwide for more than a decade, including in front of an enthusiastic Indian audience at Jazz Utsav in 2011 and with his Jazz Trio in 2011. Line up • Erik Truffaz, trumpet • Marc Erbetta, drums • Marcello Giuliani, bass • Benoit Corboz, keyboards

The quartet will also be performing in collaboration with Pro Helvetia Swiss Arts Council

6  The Lowdown

Steven Gutkin, the venture’s chief mentor, is an award-winning journalist who has reported from some two dozen countries in the Middle East, Asia, Africa and the Americas. An international newsman for 25 years, Steven served as Bureau Chief with the Associated Press, the world’s largest news gathering organization, in Israel and Venezuela, as well as AP’s Chief of Southeast Asia Services in Singapore and Indonesia, and Senior Editor in the US. Steven covered the rise and fall of the Medellin and Cali cocaine cartels, rode into Kabul with a triumphant Northern Alliance and directed coverage of wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Gaza and Lebanon. The Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar was caught because he lingered on the phone with his son to answer Steven’s questions, and the cops traced the call. Steven covered the killing of Daniel Pearl in Pakistan, hurricanes in Puerto Rico and Mexico, the death of Yasser Arafat, a coup in Fiji and the rise to power of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. Steven has also worked for the New York Times, the Washington Post, Newsweek and CBS Radio.

Marisha Dutt, Publisher and Editor of Goa Streets, is a former Marketing and Advertising Manager with The Wall Street Journal in Singapore. She took a break from work to raise her two boys in Indonesia, Israel and the United States. She has a Masters Degree in Marketing from The University of Strathclyde in the UK and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Relations. She was born in Assam, India and spent her early years on a tea plantation overlooking a pristine wildlife sanctuary. When she was 10, she and her family moved to Calcutta, where Marisha had the privilege of working alongside Mother Teresa. Later the family moved to Goa. Marisha and Steven were married 11 years ago on the Candolim beach.

Ananda Krishna, Photographer, turned hopefully towards the camera early in life. With an abundance of knowledge and overwhelmed by his brilliant teachers in Light and Life Academy, Ooty, Ananda (last ‘a’ is silent) set out knowing the ‘how’s’ but not the ‘why’s’ of a photograph. It took a good amount of drifting on the road and dabbling with shooting advertisements, a film, weddings, events, exhibitions, copywriting and even selling booze to finally understand where the WHY really matters for him – photojournalism.

Sneha Rodrigues – Business Development Manager. Sneha has a background in hospitality and online marketing, having worked for Club Mahindra as Marketing Manager and C2C, a medical tourism company in Kuwait, as Business Development Manager. She’s a foodie with a blog on poetry, and her best kept secret is that she has a fabulous singing voice that she puts to good use around Goa.

Nilesh Shetgaonkar, Administrative Assistant, is a happy-go-lucky Morjim native who prides himself on living life to the fullest. He spent seven years in Dubai and loves football, cricket and trivia. Radhika Naik – Editorial Assistant. A Mapusa resident, Radhika enjoys siestas and, when awake, spending time with family. She was always a big fan of the news and is thrilled to be part of that world today. Music with a slow tempo is her favourite playlist.

Selvan Gounder – Head of Distribution and Circulation. An energetic individual hailing from Chimbel, Selvan is a big fan of cricket and believes in keeping life simple. Victor Pereira– Distribution Team. Currently lives in Cavellossim after spending some time in New Delhi and Kerala. Victor gets a kick out of fidgeting with electrical equipment, and his claim to fame in the Goa Streets office is his winning combination of helpfulness and humility.

Vijay Gadekar– Distribution Team. Aside from being very handy in all things mechanical, Vijay is a big fan of football with an equal passion for quality beach time. Kunda Salkar – Office Assistant. A resident of Mapusa, Kunda goes through life with a permanent, and contagious, smile on her face. And it’s not just her delicious cooking that makes others smile.

The Lowdown Goa Streets is very pleased to be media partners for content at this year’s International Film Festival of India. That’s why we decided to make IFFI our cover in this edition, with a sassy overview of this year’s festival by Sheela Jaywant, some insightful reviews of the film offerings by Sanket Sharma and an out-of-the-box look at Susan Sarandon’s ‘master class’ by Bina Datwani. We hope you enjoy our IFFI coverage! Of course, there’s a lot more going on in this edition other than movies and our comprehensive listings of everything there is to do, see and eat in Goa. Speaking of media partnerships, we’re also partners for this week’s International Jazz Live Festival Goa, and the Main Event is happening this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Don’t miss our story on the festival in this edition, but even more importantly, don’t miss the festival! On these pages we bring you a rather alarming story on the state of the Indian Railways and lots of other examples of noteworthy journalism. Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello took the time to interview young ladies in Goa who, like their sisters throughout India, find themselves struggling inside the homes of their husbands’ families. Our story on the day-in-the-life of a hawker in Goa gives an inside look at the life of the sort of person many folks pass by without a thought. Also be sure not to miss Ethel Da Costa’s funky story on Anjuna, or Andrea Fernandes’ sympathetic look at Goan footballer Mathew Gonsalves, whom she calls a Goan Cannavaro! Oh, lest we forget. Check out Marisha’s food review of the wonderful new French restaurant Rara Avis. Happy reading! The Goa Streets Team

Rara Avis By Marisha Dutt

B

efore I begin this review about Rara Avis (in English, ‘Rare Bird), let me say a word not about this new restaurant along the Baga Creek Road, but about the three men who have brought it to us. For to understand the uniqueness of this establishment, you must understand the extraordinary background of its owners. For many years, Frenchman Laurent Guiraud was the owner of ‘Pays Basque’, a Michelin Star restaurant in Southwest France (note to the uninitiated: getting a Michelin star is a very, very big deal). Chef Jerome Cousin was groomed at his family’s three-generations-old restaurant in France, and started learning the “piano” (what the French call their cooking range) at age 6. To ease his induction into the culinary word, Jerome’s grandfather went to the extent of designing smaller pots and pans for him. And what would a French duo with restaurants in India do without an Indian partner? Suffer, of course, and that helps explain the presence of Rajiv Aneja, a self-taught cook and dedicated globe trotter with an entrepreneurial flair. When you look at Rara Avis, it’s worth emphasizing the ‘rare’ part of ‘rare bird.’ That’s because there’s nothing common about it. Simply put, Laurent, Jerome and Rajiv have brought to Goa a restaurant that would stand its own beautifully anywhere in the world, including Paris itself. The partners have a restaurant of the same name in New Delhi, which, like the Konkan version, reflects the culinary spirit of an authentic French bistro. My family and I dined on two recent occasions at Rara Avis, and came away very impressed. I hope it doesn’t sound too pretentious to say we’re a foodie family. Between my husband and myself, we’ve lived in the following countries: India, America, the UK, Singapore, Indonesia, Venezuela, Colombia and Israel. I love to cook, and over the years I’ve done so for many visitors. When we travel, we often choose our

destinations according to their culinary offerings – and this especially applies to France, one of our very favourite foodie destinations. At our first evening at Rara Avis, we ordered the following dishes: Assiette du Boucher (meat platter), with pork chop, lamb chops, beef, pork sausages, and chicken - served with pepper sauce. Assiette du Pêcheur (fish platter), with two different fishes, squids, prawns and baby octopus. Ile Flottante, bitten egg whites poached in milk floating in a light custard cream, topped with caramel. Suicide au Chocolat, chocolate cake served with French vanilla ice cream. None of this could have been better had we ordered it at one of the finer establishments of La Rive Gauche itself. And here’s what we had on our second night: Terrine de Jerome, pork meat terrine served with a salad and gherkins with homemade French baguette. Cassolette de Gambas, prawns cooked in a light white wine, fish stock and cream, sprinkled with Gruyere cheese and baked “au gratin”. Poulet aux Morilles, chicken breast in a sauce made of Morels (Gucci), cream, reduced with port wine. Quenelles de Poissons Armoricaine, fish and prawns minced and mixed with choux pastry, with the mix then poached and put in a sauce made of tomato and Cognac, and a bit of cheese. It is not an understatement to say this is the stuff of Michelin stars. There’s lots of other offerings on the menu, including Steak Tartare, Cordon Bleu, Carpaccio de Boeuf, Poisson Cru Marine and Tagliatelle au Fruits de Mer. That Rara Vis is situated on the romantically lit terraces of a beautiful home overlooking the Baga River, with understated but highly tasteful designer-made furnishings, makes this a winner all around.  The Food: World-class French cuisine in Goa The Service: Proficient and warm Prices: Not too high, considering the quality of the food and ambience. Main courses run from Rs 420 to Rs 580. Where: Baga Creek Road, Arpora-Baga. Phone: +91 9811232992

Ride at your own risk! By Pedro Menezes

I

f the India Air Force’s Mig23 fighter planes are called ‘flying coffins’ (because they keep on crashing and killing pilots), what should the trains of the Indian Railways – which keep crashing with alarming regularity killing hundreds of passengers - be called? India’s railway network operates 9,000 passenger trains and carries some 18 million passengers every day. Train accidents in India have killed over 1,200 people over the past five years, railway officials say. But that figure does not count the people killed on the tracks. The biggest reason for people dying on railway tracks is trespassing. The recent accident near Nagpur where the Netravati Express derailed killing 3 passengers was only the latest, and like with most other rail accidents, could have been prevented if timely repairs had been done to the tracks. The last major accident was in Bihar on August 19 when at least 35 people died when the Rajya Rani Express ran over people at the Dhamara station near Saharsa. Last month, eight people were run over by the Rayagada passenger near Gotlam Vizayanagaram, in Andhra Pradesh. The tragedy occurred after

passengers of the Bokaro Express (Alleppy to Dhanbad), proceeding to Bokaro Steel city, pulled the chain at the railway yard at Gotlam station near Vizianagaram town when they heard a rumour that a compartment of the train was on fire. They then alighted the train and jumped onto the tracks at around 6.50 pm. It was dark and the passengers didn’t see the Rayagada-Vijaywada passenger train coming from the opposite direction on the adjacent rack. The Raigarh-Vijaywada train ran over them, killing eight people. On November 13, a herd of 40 elephants was struck by a passenger train in Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary. A high-level safety review committee appointed by railways in 2012 had found that almost 15,000 people were killed every year while crossing rail tracks, and had described it as an annual “massacre” due to poor safety standards. Around 6,000 deaths were reported on the Mumbai suburban system alone. In a harsh comment, the panel headed by Anil Kakodkar observed, “Reluctance of railways to own these casualties, which do not fall under the purview of train accidents but are nevertheless accidents on account of trains can by no means be ignored. No civilized society can accept such massacre on their railway system.”

Passengers at most stations are forced to trespass because of inadequate pedestrian over-bridges, escalators and narrow platforms. The trespass takes place mainly on account of lack of barricading and fencing. The failure of railways to eliminate level crossings is another major cause of deaths on tracks. Around 194 people were killed at unmanned level crossings in the last three years. The unmanned crossings are responsible for the maximum number of train accidents, around 40%, as the task of building road over-bridges (ROBs) and road under-bridges (RUBs) has remained incomplete. Recently the Railway Ministry announced that it would eliminate 10,797 level crossings during the 12th five year plan (2012-17) and not add any new level crossing in future. The railways have 31,254 level crossings, around 40% of which are unmanned. In February this year, a parliamentary panel headed by Sitaram Yechury recommended complete autonomy to the Commission for Railway Safety (CRS) for its effective functioning as an agency investigating rail accidents. The panel described the prevailing scenario for investigating rail accidents by CRS as “disappointing”, and its mandate as “greatly restricted”. Yechury said more

than 90% of the railway accidents have been assigned to human error and the persons responsible for these are often dead. There is seldom a complete investigation to find the reason. “The commission has not been allowed to conduct investigations independently,” he said. According to the railways, “it is a known fact that more than 50% of collisions on railways were caused by lapses of loco pilots who are one of the most stressful lot, necessitating technical aid to them for preventing collisions.” Sitaram Yechury also said the CRS should be legally empowered to conduct inspections annually, which is not the practice now. Prior to 1953, CRS had the power of inspection but it was taken away by the railways by an executive order that year. Yechury also expressed concern over the delay in using anticollision devices to reduce accidents. He added that whenever a question relating to the use of technology is asked, railway officials come with a “standard reply” of “still being tested”. The Anti-Collision Device (ACD), developed by the Konkan Railway Corporation way back in 2003 after a series of train collisions which killed hundreds, is still not widely used. The ACD is a self-acting microprocessorbased data communication device. When installed on locomotives (along with an auto-braking unit - ABU), guard vans, stations and level-crossing gates (both manned and unmanned), the network of ACD systems prevents high-speed collisions in mid-sections, station areas and at level-crossing gates. The ACD uses both radio frequency and Global Positioning System (GPS) through satellites, whereby a train is automatically brought to a halt if the track ahead is not clear. The train starts braking 3 kms ahead of a blockade. Even though there have been many major accidents since then, the railways are yet to install ACDs in all trains. One reason for the sad state of the Indian railways, say observers, is that the Railway Ministry, considered one of the most lucrative, is always given to a powerful politician – who usually knows nothing about the railways. The politician then fills the railways with people seeking employment from his constituency, state or political party. Asks Goa-based British parliamentarian Lord Meghnad Desai, “Does the Railway Ministry have to be sacrificed to narrow regional interests? Why has India not got a decent high-speed rail service but just plenty of workshops and factories in the constituencies of railway ministers and Congress grandees? What would it take to get a safe, decent, comfortable railway system which passengers can ride without fear of accidents and injuries?” Good questions. 

The 44th International Film Festival of India

T

By Sheela Jaywant

here’s much to differentiate IFFI from other film festivals around the world, but this past week I found a new one: A big male monkey posing and modeling in the middle of the road right opposite the festival’s entrance gate. A young gentleman pedestrian and I tried to bribe him with biscuits and then threaten him with a stick to get him – and ourselves – out of the way of Panjim’s potentially deadly traffic. Then others, rather than coming to our aid, started photographing and videoing this encounter – a rather fitting offense since we were standing outside India’s premier forum for capturing the image. The 44th International Film Festival of India, still going on as I write this, has been notable for a number of reasons: the preponderance of Japanese offerings, the grumbling of the delegates about disorganization, the overdue focus on Konkani films, the stunning ‘master class’ by none other than Susan Sarandon and, of course, the juxtaposition of cinema glitterati with a confused Goan monkey. Goa Streets is media partner for content for this year’s IFFI. Yes, it’s true this festival has had its share of glitches. But in the end, it remains a celebration of what’s best about our nation: our “soft power”, our creative side, our cinematic tradition that serves as a source of pride, entertainment and envy for people all over the world. And from the Goan perspective, there’s another reason to be happy about this year’s IFFI. For years, we’ve seen the familiar faces from Assam, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Trivandrum, Mumbai and Allahbad, none of them bothering to give our local cinema much notice. Not so this year. Konkani films have been something of a hot topic, with Baga Beach and The Coffin Maker making a particular splash.

As with every year, the best place to interact with actors, composers and directors was at the ‘master classes’, with the most celebrated one this year being that offered by the great Susan Sarandon (see separate article on page 16). Lots of people were upset when NDTV’s Barkha Dutt insisted on asking Sarandon political questions in a master class that was supposed to be about acting. But as Bina Datwani wrote, Susan is a very political woman (in addition to being one of our generation’s finest actresses, with a Best

Actress Oscar among her achievements). The décor outside the halls of IFFI showed ‘reels’. But today, reels are all but defunct, with most films made digitally. That means that as IFFI marks its 44th birthday, much is changing – but not necessarily for the worse. “Films don’t even need people onscreen,” said Seth Scriver, co-director (along with Shayne Ehman) of the acclaimed Canadian film “Asphalt Watches”. “New age computer technology has metamorphosed the global animation industry.” Added Max Anderson, director

of ‘Tito On Ice,’ “The best thing about animation films was that they could be made with a small budget … In fact, big budgets sometimes limit creativity.” Can one make out by watching a film whether the director is a woman? I couldn’t. Mouly Surya’s ‘What They Don’t Talk About When They Talk About Love’, a film set in Indonesia that took over three years to produce, captured the sentiment of love amidst a school of visually impaired teenagers. “In the school of visually impaired children, the film shows how they explore love using other senses.” Maria Douza’s Greek film ‘Tree and the Swing’ was about migration and its effects on a family and relationships. Eleni Bertes’ Greek film, “Joy” was soppy, but well narrated. Filipino actress Ruby Ruz spoke about her role in a film about poorly paid movie extras in her country. Acclaimed Czech director Agnieszka Holland at one point was asked why she chose the title ‘The Burning Bush’ for one of her films. She replied, “It was a phrase from the Bible where God guides Moses’ towards a burning bush. It is a symbol of a freedom fight, which is an essential part of the film.” The film, a three-part series produced by Home Box Office, tells the story of a member of the Czech freedom struggle setting himself on fire (see review page 15). One of the best features of IFFI is the Open Forum. Every afternoon, whilst one was munching a kebab or swigging a cold-coffee, one could ask questions of people such as filmmaker Ehsan Majid, critic and filmmaker Utpal Borpujari, Actor Seema Biswas (remember her in ‘Bandit Queen’?), Nayan Kumar, and others. I believe films have done more to unite this country than white khadi caps or saffron-coloured clothes.

The vernacular films were as popular as the ones from abroad. “Character and not celebrities are important,” said Nagraj Manjule, director of the critically acclaimed Marathi movie ‘Fandry’. “It’s my first feature film, a biopic of my own life.” Said Kishore Kadam, an actor in the movie, “Fandry was an ‘unlearning’ and that was difficult.” It was hard to juggle movies with the informal chai and chat sessions. At one, New York-based director Vince Sandoval spoke about how his film “Apparitions” explored the conservativeness of nuns in the Philippines. Set in 1971, it’s about a monastery whose nuns leave the world physically but not mentally. You need to see the film to know what that means. Small and independent producers are making their presence felt. Girish Malik’s film ‘Jal’ was screened to a packed audience. Lead actor Purab Kohli couldn’t stop smiling. “It was the first time that it was screened for an Indian audience.” He plays a water diviner in the waterparched Rann of Kutch region in Gujarat. The press conference at which Ramesh Tekwani and Vincent Corda talked about such filmmakers almost persuaded me to take up the camera. Wondering how to pronounce Antonia Piazza and Fabio Grassadonia (joint directors of a mafia thriller ‘Salvo’) and Eduardo Rossoff (who directed the Belgian film ‘Let me Survive’) led me to the banks of the Mandovi behind Kala Academy, where delegates were discussing films made by them. Many guests were excited about visiting Goa. Eduardo Rossoff said that India resembled Mexico a lot. “There is the same chaos, love for spicy food and love for people ... It makes me feel like staying on here forever.” I’d wanted to assure him that a lot of people from Delhi felt like that, too, and they weren’t a 30hour flight away. For the next few days, I have on my list interactions with Malayalam DirectorProducer Salim Ahamed, the crew of the Hindi film, “A Dream Called America”, and Lifetime Achievement Award Winner, Jiri Menzel. 

Highlights of the Festival By Sanket Sharma

Let’s take a look at some of the best film offerings so far of the 44th International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

Burning Bush is a 3-part series produced by HBO which depicts the true story of the Czech student Jan Palak, who in protest against the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia burned himself in daylight. Timing in at around 240 minutes, this series provides a haunting and important testament of Czech history. This act of protest by Jan Palak leads to various sub plots which keep the tension alive. The narration of the movie is tightly bound by the director, which not just makes the long screen time bearable, but also enjoyable. Another striking feature about the movie is the treatment of the facts in the form of storytelling. We all love a good yarn, and this movie gives us one.

The Act of Killing - 2012

Dir: Joshua Oppenheimer Country: Denmark – Britain - Norway

Like father, Like Son - 2013 Director: Hirokazu Koreeda Country: Japan

Like Father , Like Son could be the most surprising movie of the festival. This Japanese flick, well received at the festival, depicts the lives of two families whose kids are swapped at birth in a hospital and only realise this after 6 years. The most striking element of the movie is the treatment of the emotions, which are both subtle and real (anyone who’s visited Japan knows these are not folks prone to wearing their hearts on their sleeves!)The two main male characters of the movie are fundamentally opposite, one a hard-working ambitious achiever and the other a laid-back family man. They are at loggerheads on and off throughout the movie. The film begins with the revelation of the ‘real’ identity of the kids, which leads to their parents planning a lawsuit against the hospital. Then begins a cinematic journey of twists and turns, leading to the conclusion which, of course, I will not reveal! Japanese cinema, although famed for gangster and war movies, over the past few years has produced works of value in other genres too, this being a prime example.

Burning Bush -2013

Director: Agnieszka Holland Country: Czech Republic

The Act of Killing is a documentary movie, based on the death squads of Indonesia, seen through the eyes of one of their most brutal killers during a military crackdown in 1965 that killed a half a million people. The movie follows a few main characters, who are all either ex or present members of the death squads and asks them to recreate their personal killing stories by shooting a film in the style of their favourite American movies. The squad members, proud and unashamed, narrate their stories through props, sets, costumes and even dancers. This movie is shot and portrayed as raw as possible, which intensifies the brutality of the subject matter and hence achieves the desired reaction from the audience. The movie is brilliantly put together, and provides a thought provoking yet satisfying informative document. And the emotions shine through, too.

September - 2013

Director: Penny Panayotopoulou Country: Greece

September is an emotionally subtle and intense movie. It is the bittersweet tale of a young woman, who is trying to deal with the death of her beloved dog. After the death, the owner enters a state of extreme sadness and loneliness (all the pet owners out there will understand these emotions, though if you’re not one, it’s possible you will find the subject matter strange). The movie keeps you involved and interested, despite the fact that the topic can be mistreated very easily. The movie captures the complexity of emotion while keeping the plot simple. With a little self investment and patience, this is a good movie you can enjoy.

Mystery Road- 2013 Director: Ivan Sen Country: Australia

Mystery Road revolves around the investigation of the murder of a teenage girl in a desert town in Australia. The movie progresses at its own pace, slowly unravelling the mysteries surrounding the murder. Although the plot is somewhat stereotypical, it does manage to engage you because of its extraordinary delivery. The cinematography is the top draw, with wide-angle shots capturing the beautiful landscape of the Down Under countryside. Mystery Road attempts to keep its viewer invested, and to some degree it succeeds, although it might not go down in the history as one of Australia’s greatest films. Still, the characters and events are authentic. When someone shoots at a long range of a few miles, there’s a 2 to 3 second pause before the bullet reaches the target. The depiction of a destroyed town in the desert is also haunting, with an almost post-apocalyptic look. In terms of ideas, it does overlap a lot with the American greats, but still manages to make a novel point or two.

Susan Sarandon – If doing plays is like making love, what is doing films like?

Susan Sarandon during a theatre workshop

By Bina Datwani

I

t was billed as a ‘master class’ on acting by the most famous person to attend this year’s IFFI, Susan Sarandon. But in the end it was much, much more. True, the class did not start out on a happy note. The air in the Maquinez Palace room was fraught with the tension of disgruntled film buffs who were desperately seeking Susan – in this case a seat in the packed auditorium. It was embarrassing to hear angry raised voices echoing through the hall while TV journalist Barkha Dutt put questions to Sarandon, who then had to raise her voice to be heard. (We do want one of the world’s most celebrated actresses coming away with a good impression of Goa, don’t we?). Despite the obvious organisational lapses of the IFFI team, this one time, the blame for the fracas appears to rest squarely on the shoulders of the delegates. While I can understand the frustration of being made to wait in long queues, there can surely be no excuse for loudly berating Barkha for, as one particularly loud heckler shouted, “wasting time by asking irrelevant questions about political stuff”. Anyone who knows anything about Susan is aware that she is one of the most political entertainers in existence – taking strong stands in favour of gay rights and against the Iraq war (plus drawing criticism for once calling Pope Benedict XVI a “Nazi”). So no matter what the session was labelled as, it can be legitimately argued that Barkha would have been remiss in her journalistic duties NOT to broach politics. Enough said. This rebel with a cause - who plays ping-pong as a stress buster (she co-owns the table tennis club SPiN) – enjoys keenly observing people. Speaking about gender battles in Hollywood, Sarandon says that though men get paid more, they don’t necessarily get great roles written for them. “And the irony is that women buy more movie tickets than men”. As for the Oscar, she thinks that sometimes people win simply because they’ve been nominated several times but have never won and so, the jury votes for them “just to get it over with and it may not necessarily be a great performance”. (Sarandon herself won a Best Actress Oscar for her breathtaking role as a nun in the 1995 film Dead Man Walking). Perhaps her biggest issue with this award is the rule that a winner must sign a paper promising not to sell the statuette unless they first offer to sell it back to the Academy for just one dollar. “It should be

treated like any piece of art and the winners allowed to sell their prize if they so wish”. Speaking of politics, she confirmed she voted for Obama, twice, but really only because she couldn’t stand the Republican alternatives. “People thought we had lost our minds with Bush and so, an African American president is a huge thing for us”. And what of his being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize? “Perhaps they were hoping it would encourage him to do more ‘peaceful’ things,” she replies, apparently less than thrilled about the president’s trigger happiness on the ground. Her honesty has come at a high price, including death threats. “Being outspoken is like playing Russian roulette. You’re bound to get a bullet sooner or later with the press reporting everything”. It takes less than a minute of listening to Susan before understanding she’s one smart cookie. Is that a good thing for an actor? “The verdict is still out on whether being smart helps cos it may in fact get in the way. Also, a good actor needs to be a good listener because empathy is the key to playing different roles with compassion and learning that everyone has the same issues and fears. Ergo, acting can actually make you a better person”. Surprisingly, Susan has a strong superstitious streak and so refrains from using the classic method of thinking bad thoughts about her family to invoke tears. She said as she grew older – believe it or not, she’s now 67 – she realized there are many ways to express grief other than crying. She admits to being superstitious, which, she said, was the reason behind her refusal to allow her real life daughter to play her reel life daughter in the film ‘Stepmom’, which depicted a girl’s relationship with her dying mother. (Sarandon has three kids, a daughter from her relationship with Italian filmmaker Franco Amurri and two sons from her relationship with

actor Tim Robbins). On the subject of current and future projects, Sarandon recently completed a film with Kathy Bates where she played an alcoholic grandmother, “which was liberating because I didn’t have to worry about how I looked”. But what she enjoys most is working in theatre, although the downside is that it involves a huge time commitment and keeps her away from family. “The difference between theatre and films is like the difference between making love and masturbation,” she says to rapturous laughter in the Goan auditorium. Does that mean she’ll be doing more plays in the near future? No, they take too much of her time. “Right now, I’m interested in making documentaries”. I hope she finds something akin to lovemaking in them, too.

A Survival Primer This slice of the planet ain’t nothing like the rest of it, baby. A paradise for spiritual seekers, party kids, flagwavers of the counter-culture, the punk and exotic co-existing in the melody of bright-eyed psychedelia. Refuge for the anti-establishment, where American, European, and Indie hippies come to turn on, tune in and drop out… Anjuna is the favoured queen of the `misfits’, while the rest of the world turns on the heat chasing their `material’ demi-gods. y first brush with the culture shock of Anjuna happened in the late 80s, when I first discovered that the village’s palm trees bear strange fruit, and people. The land screams massage parlors, exotic food, trance music and salvation through yoga. Then of course there’s the hippies and the marijuana and the hash and the ecstasy and the meth. High priests preach the chill pill while others fleece the tourists. As my visits increased, I became fascinated by the assimilation of multi-cultural lifestyles, and I knew it was only a matter of time before tourists smartened up with the ways of the locals. When you can’t beat them, join them. Brown skin and white, tattoos and suntan, Russian, Hebrew and Greek gyrating to

international DJs on the mix, dishing out nirvana in an era of global warming in equally hot clubs, tripping towards mind expansion. I realized, you can’t ignore Anjuna. She grows on you, gets under your skin and stays. Popularised by the world’s flower children of the late 50’s who traveled overland on “magic buses” from Europe to create a slice of a free-spirited, budget-friendly new world among the laid-back native Goans, the village of Anjuna has today become a wildly spinning center, swallowing up the quieter communities of Arambol, Vagator and Morjim as caravans of global nomads seek their own clusters of alternative living. Thatched roofs, suntan, and acid disco. Sure, the government stepped in and

banned nudism, forcing the unclothed freedom seekers underground. But come Wednesdays and an under-current of vibrancy runs high through the nerve centre of Anjuna as all wheels head for the most celebrated weekly Anjuna Flea Market. This is where the action truly is, depending upon your flavour of the day. Started decades ago by Anjuna’s hippie community, the humble local enterprise which started as a community meeting centre of funky nomads, has today mushroomed into a sprawling, wide-scale international affair. In the 90’s, it came with a statutory warning: If you’re not street-smart, mind your purse. The same mandate applies too now, and how! It has grown over the years into fifty-odd closely packed stalls run by vociferous Lamani `business women’ in bright colourful clothes, world denizens jingling tribal jewelry and strange accents, and an assortment of other colourful bohemians. Brace up to the persistent `must-buy Madam’ come-ons as the carnival-like atmosphere crazily winds down the length of the palm-fringed beach. Looking for Alternate fashion? Big spot for fashion drop-out designers, or creative seamstresses masquerading as designers. Heck! If it works for you, good for you. Everything for a price under the sun. Mind it, hefty, if you will not exercise your bargaining skills! Books, bikes, Balinese batik, silver jewellery, linen, electronic goods, precious stone trinkets, Tibetan accessories, art, Indonesian thongs with European price tags and massages that

promise instant rejuvenation of the spirit and the wallet. Nepali goods, Tibetan prayer beads, embroidered stoles, scarfs, kaftans, incense sticks and semi-precious stones, crystals, fancy knives, handicrafts, hammocks, bedspreads, latest techno and trance CDs, and let me not forget: Exotic food -- Indian, Israeli, Greek, Tibetan, Burmese, Italian and French, take your pick. Ayurvedic doctors, professional hair cutters and stylists, dreadlock weavers, nose and body piercers and tattoo artists hawk their wares with panache, snarling at persistent hagglers who won’t cut the chase. Sharing elbow space with loud trance tunes, Swedish rockers, French backpackers, punk Lebanese girls in Che Guevara T-shirts and nose-rings, and middle-aged Brits throng juice and beer bars, while your eyes take in the colourfully demarcated bed-sheets tied to coconut trees, shielding yourself from the fierce sun and further intoxication. The caravan meanders snake-like with their assorted wares, languages, and promises of Neverland. Of course, bargaining and being a savvy shopper is mandatory. Unless, you have no qualms letting a good-looking Israeli talk you into buying his grand-aunt’s recycled toaster for a ransom. The food is to be enjoyed while you’re there. Cuisines vary, tempting palates to venture where no taste bud has been before. Organic health food and fusion co-exist, along with the ubiquitous Italian vegetarian pizza for the Gujju brigade recovering from the experience. And if the sun has not blinded you by now and your feet stay rooted for more, head to `Shore Bar’ or `Café Looda’ for a sunset rendezvous, some more trance music and nirvana or fading jazz funk rebellion anthems. By next Wednesday you’re an enlightened soul qualified for a re-run on your own. Wish you a great bargain! Writer Profile: Ethel Da Costa is a Goa-based acknowledged fashion, lifestyle, music writer, radio head, creative entrepreneur, commenter and columnist of all things politically and socially incorrect. After the lads graduate from the academy, they will stand a chance to play for the senior team. “There is no substitute for hard work; this is my humble advice to youngsters who want to make football their career. Take your practices seriously and give your best in every match,” Mathew says. Mathew speaks frankly about the problems the game faces. “The government doesn’t pay much heed to football as we all know,” he says. There’s wide agreement that much work needs to be done before India can take its rightful place on the world football stage as the planet’s second most populous nation. Fortunately, academies like Peter Vaz’s and another venture, the Brasil Football Academy, are beginning to change things right here in Goa. Here’s what Peter Vaz has to say about Matthew: “I have no regrets about scouting Mathew (at the MPT) … He has matured from then with good discipline. No doubt he his short in stature, but through his hard work and dedication he is the most feared defender, by any striker”. Peter concludes by saying, “If Fabio Cannavaro captained Italy at the age of 34, Mathew has captained Sporting Clube at 36”. In some ways, he already is Goa’s Cannavaro.

Mathew was a raw talent when scouted from the Mormugao Port Trust football team by Sporting Clube President Peter Vaz. But the defender has transformed himself and is currently enjoying his ninth season with The Flaming Oranje. He has been breathing football since early childhood and hard work and dedication have made him one of Goa’s fiercest defenders. Mathew’s journey began early in his schooling days where he represented his village school Our Lady of Remedios High School, Nerul. He didn’t take any football training at any academy. Yet that didn’t stop him from moving on to the MPT team, where he served one year in 2003-2004, before joining Sporting. On the Streets A day in the life of a hawker Currently a resident of Khorlim, Mapusa, Mohammed has been in Goa since he was 11. He is the sole breadwinner in his family, which consists of himself, his wife and two kids. Mohammed starts off his day at 9 in the morning after reaching his small children to school. He does his duty of a father well by going to pick his kids up from school later in the day (at around 2 pm) after which he has his lunch and returns back to work by 3 pm. Then he stays there till 9 or 10 pm. “I myself am not educated but I have a great wish to educate my children as much as possible,” he tells me. Like many people who sell stuff on the streets of Goa, he does not take home the profits for himself. Whatever income Mohammed earns, he gives to his boss, who in turn pays him a fixed amount of Rs 4000 at the end of every month. (I don’t have to tell anyone how difficult it is to live on that amount of money).

“I began selling clothes since the age of 30. I have a boss who brings the clothes from Mumbai. My clothes prices range from Rs 100 to 200 and my rates vary as per the season. Now at the moment since it’s

winter and people like to keep warm I am selling sweaters for Rs 200 each. I even sell raincoats during the monsoons,” Mohammed explains. Perhaps it should come as no surprise that life has not been easy for Mohammed, one of the thousands of people in Goa who earn their daily bread by hawking. “I live in a rented hut-like house. I had built my own hut once but it was demolished by the police. I tried to seek government aid but it was in vain. I dream of building my own house someday,” says this hawker with a million dreams in his eyes. 

Is not always a fairy tale By Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello

In India, unlike in Western countries, when a woman decides to mouth the words “I do,” she often has to accept her husband’s family, too. I won’t get into the origins of the tradition of a new bride moving into the home of her husband’s parents, other than to say that it’s very much the norm in our beloved state and nation. For young women, this experience runs the entire gamut from warm haven to living hell. Let’s listen to what some ladies – and a few men - here in Goa have to say about the issue. With the exception of the experts I interviewed, I’ve changed the name of each of these folks to protect their privacy (and their relationship with the offending inlaw!) Sangeeta:

“I don’t like staying at my husband’s home, but I am forced to. He is based out of Goa. My in-laws seem to poke their nose in everyone’s business; where I am, what I am doing, where I am going, what I should wear, what my baby should wear, what my baby should call me, what I should cook…..” “I have a very good relationship with my husband. We discuss all matters over the phone or email and take decisions. But such interference from in-laws can be very annoying.”

Reshma:

“I am not happy. My in-laws want me to take over the entire household responsibilities when I have a teaching job. My husband is onboard the ship. My sister-in-law who is already married couple of years back is putting up here when she has a home of her own. My in-laws cater to all her needs, refusing to consult me on any household decisions.”

Jasmine:

“My husband holds a job in a private company. We are staying at his ancestral home. His parents are forever whining about my style of getting household things done. I find that quite frustrating. I

love my job and I really love the time that I am away from my in-laws. Who would want to hear complaints especially when one is tired and needs a good rest?” ____ Of course mothers in law have their side of the story as well. Let’s hear from one of them, 59-year-old Natalie: “Both our young daughter-inlaws don’t help us out with any of the household duties. They remain aloof most of the time. I could use some help in the kitchen and other household chores.” “If I question them about it, they don’t like it and are off to their mothers’ homes. Now that’s quite a difficult matter to handle especially when everyone asks ‘Your daughter-in-law doesn’t stay here anymore?’” _____ To be sure, not all women share the same monster-in-law opinion. Here’s a case of a lady who adored her husband’s mother.

Jennifer: “When I got married about thirty years back, my mother-in-law was very helpful. I was a working woman and she understood that despite the fact that she was hardly educated. She would help with the cooking and looked after my kids. Just before she passed away (more than a decade back), she told me that the responsibility of the whole home rests on my shoulders and to take good care of the family.” ____ It’s not common, but at times

it’s the man who stays at his wife’s parents’ home. In such situations, misunderstandings and complications emerge less frequently. Though most men would prefer to be on their home turf, several siblings (especially brothers) in the family might drive some men to stay at their wives’ homes. Here’s a guy who’s living happily in that situation.

Benson:

“We are five brothers in the family. I am the eldest. I moved out of my ancestral home after my marriage. I have a great job, a good wife, and two kids. It is always best for one sibling to stay at home, while others find a place of their own …” _____ Sociologists say that a large percentage of married women rate troubles with their mother-in-law as a major bone of contention, with sex and money being lower-rated areas of contention. A study by the Co-operative Legal Services this year found interfering in-laws as among the top ten reasons for marriage breakdowns in Britain, with 11 percent of those polled blaming interfering in-laws for their marriage breakdown. In this year in May, local dailies flashed news about a husband who along with his parents was booked in a suicide case of his wife in Ponda.

Investigations revealed that the trio was harassing her for dowry since marriage. In another similar case last year, Ponda police had registered a case against the husband and in-laws of a woman who had ended her life at Shiroda barely four months after her marriage. A similar incident was recently reported by a woman from Curchorem. Psychologist Clifford DeSilva believes recently married couples should live on their own for a while whenever possible, so they can get used to each other and consolidate their relationship. “In the Indian context, the word ‘healthy relationship’ and in-laws don’t go together,” he says. “It is very difficult. In India, when a woman gets married to a man, she also gets married to his family.” ____ Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello is a psychologist based in Navelim
