Melque Rodrigues is a Goan singer whose melodious voice has captured the attention of many in Las Vegas, and this past week, in Goa, too. Hers is a story of triumph over odds, of inner strength and determination that enabled her to chase her musical dreams despite being legally blind. Melque has donned many hats - singer, restaurant owner, sales representative, among others. But music is what makes her heart beat. Recently, Melque returned to Goa for the first time after moving to the U.S. eight years ago, performing at a couple of gigs in North and South Goa and wowing her fellow Goans with her wonderful voice. Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello caught up with this bubbly 38-year-old professional singer in Goa before she flew to the States on 27th January…

M

aria Melqueades Rodrigues, better known as Melque, has her Goan roots in Navelim. A popular face in music circles, Melque moved to the United States eight years back in an attempt to further explore her musical talent. Melque was forced to give up her college studies when she was diagnosed with degeneration of the retina. The doctors told young Melque that her condition could worsen over the years with undue strain. With a medical condition such as ‘macular degeneration’, which causes one to slowly go blind, she felt her best option was to discontinue her studies and pursue her passion for singing, hoping that it would blossom into a career. She recalls, “My grandmother was sharp in spotting my talent when I was a little kid.” She has many fond memories of participating in various singing competitions as a youngster. Several teachers in her school (Perpetual Convent High School, Navelim) – Theresa, Ivonne and late Sr. Bernadine - reinforced her love for music. You can also trace her musical lineage to her cousin, Brian Monteiro (popularly known as Brian Bones), the bandleader of ‘Muzik Mann.’ Her maternal grandfather was known to play the drums and the violin. She was the crooner of ‘Muzik Mann’ for about 7 years in Goa. Shortly thereafter, she took the giant leap of going solo. She spoke of her performances at the Navy Ball, Clube

Gaspar Dias, Baywatch, Longuinhos, Fiplees, Raj’s Pentagon, Jazz Inn, Coconut Grove and for many New Year parties. In Mumbai, Melque has performed at the Taj, Parsi Gymkhana, Oberoi, and the Naval Defence Headquarters in Pune. She has also performed with the legendary Jazzy Joe. Melque fondly recalls, “Chris Perry was like a father figure to me.” He had commented, “The day I die, you will become a big star.” She had a brief stint in Dubai singing at restaurants ‘Susegad’ and ‘Viva Goa.’ She reminisces, “Dubai was the turning point in my life.” Glenn Perry (son of late Chris Perry) helped Melque in voice training at his Music School in Dubai. Living in the US and dabbling in different professions was a great learning experience for Melque. She was a sales representative for Chanel perfume. She says, “I enjoyed working there. The job was easy on my eyes too.” She had a stint in California as a sales representative for branded perfumes, followed by another at Macy’s department Store in California, after which she got a transfer to one of its store outlets in Las Vegas as the Assistant Manager. A lucky break or so it seemed! Melque joined the hospitality industry for two and half years where she took to singing nightly in her own restaurant ‘Namaste Indian Cuisine’ serving Goan food to Americans, Indians and many others, until closing down last year. She released an album in 2009 ‘Americak Pauxi,’ comprising of 12 songs (originally sung by Lorna and Usha Utup) in Konkani. Her music genre is jazz, pop and soul. World famous singers Whitney Houston and Tina Turner are her favourites. She is also a fan of Michael Jackson. Melque has been in the US for eight years. This was her first trip back home since coming to the States. Melque exclaims, “Music is everything to me. I don’t compete with anyone when I hold the mike in my hands. It’s just me and the

Music & Nightlife  5 audience. I sing from the depths of my heart and connect with the audience.” She is single and thirty-eight, but marriage doesn’t feature on her list of worries. She is very sure about herself, “Marriage is not everything. I am an independent woman and I am happy the way I am. However, I am open to marriage. I do not face any pressures from my family.” Just as every job has its rewarding experiences, Melque finds contentment in every moment. She says, “Each day is a big learning experience. At my restaurant in the US, I came

across people from diverse backgrounds with different problems. I learnt that problems are part and parcel of life.” “Follow your dreams. Listen to your inner voice. One should always think positively ‘I am someone.’ As long as your conscience is clear, you are answerable to God and your parents. Truth shall always prevail,” says Melque. As this US citizen bids adeus to Goa, she says, “I will always be a Goan at heart.” Goa wishes you all the best for your future endeavors! 

We hope you find this information – and the spa experience itself – to be useful and satisfying! In this issue, we’d also like to draw your attention to our thoughtful, nuanced story on Goans’ current political leanings, our important story on a special project underway to protect Smooth-Coated Otters and our ‘give-back’ piece on an extraordinary rickshaw journey made to support the cause of clean drinking water. On these pages, you will find a highly entertaining piece on an even more entertaining evening – the recent ‘Chaine’ dinner at Fiesta Restaurant. We tell you about a very special Goan singer who just paid our state a visit for the first time after moving to the U.S. eight years ago. Don’t miss our story on artist Subodh Kerkar’s very noteworthy project bringing a group of Goan artists to New Delhi, our eye opening piece on Goa’s far less than perfect Employment Exchange and our story on one man’s ‘deep’ view of the Tao. And then, of course, there’s Lusofonia. We pulled it off – and we can be proud! Sorry naysayers!

Viva La Chaine! An Extraordinary Culinary Event At Fiesta By Ananda Krishna “The fine art of gastronomy is a friendly art. It transcends the language barrier, makes friends among civilized people, and warms one’s heart.” - Samuel Chamberlain

W

hen it comes to culinary events, it’s hard to beat the one that happened on the 22nd of January, when Fiesta Restaurant played host to La Chaine, the world’s premier foodie club. Connoisseur Maitre Restaurateur Yellow pulled off a wonderful evening with world-class food and refined elegance. For starters, La Chaine des Rotisseurs is an International Association of Gastronomy with over 25,000 members across 80 countries. The history of this club can be dated back as far as 1248 (yes, you read that right, we’re talking seven and a half CENTURIES!). That’s the time when King Louis IX got the brainwave of forming a guild consisting of professional roasters. They developed the culinary arts for centuries, but their royal patronage didn’t sit well with the French revolutionaries who drove them underground. The group was revived in 1950 under the name “Confrerie de la Chaine des Rotisseurs”. Now fastforward to a fine night of exquisite European food served in a tropical garden on the sand dunes overlooking the Arabian Sea at the six-time award winning restaurant, Fiesta. This Portuguese summer villa was magically transformed with people attired in chic informal evening wear and Indian clothes. Murmurs had it that not just good but great food was being prepared. Fiesta specializes in authentic Italian, French and Seafood. It’s delicious even on an ordinary night, and on this extraordinary night the offerings were especially sublime. To attend these kind of events, you’re supposed to be a member of Chaine des Rotisseurs, or

invited by one. In some countries, prospective members hang for years on a waiting list before they’re admitted. Here in Goa, it’s possible to join a lot quicker. The place was tingling with the finest of senses cultivated to honour the centuriesold tradition of true food appreciation. There were chefs, sommeliers, foodaholics, gastronomers, hoteliers, restaurateurs and connoisseurs all under one roof (or in this case, sky) to celebrate the simple joy of life: Eating. There was a delightfully refreshing strawberry Daiquiri at the welcome

reception along with the pass-around Pear and Goat Cheese drizzled with Honey, the Citrus and Saffron Risotto, the Coarse Sea Salt and Black Pepper cured Tuna marinated in Dill, and the SouthEast Asian style Chicken with Sesame and Soy Sauce Dressing. It was the perfect way to start this odyssey; smacking food and scintillating conversation. We were already on our way to the next course of this five-course meal. We now had before us a Tartar of Kalamata Olives, Garden Tomatoes accompanied by Ruccola and Parmigianino Crisp and for

the love of prawns the next course had steamed Tiger Prawns served with Chef’s special Sherry Zabaglione. There was some white wine and Cucumber Granita before one dived right into the delicious Coarse Kerala black Pepper crusted Fillet of Beef with a wonderful selection of choices of sauce from Cream of English Mustard, Thai, Sesame and Soy Sauce and the Traditional Demi Glace. The dessert was called Fiesta’s Special Sweet Surprise, and a surprise it was – and a very good one at that! It featured Fresh Exotic Fruits, Chocolate, Caramel, Coffee and warm Vanilla Waffles. Well, while we were sipping our fresh herbal Teas and Italian Coffees, the satisfaction of this experience could be seen beaming on everyone’s face. Everyone, in this case, being members of Chaine des Rotisseurs – and their lucky friends. Viva la Chaine!  www.fiestagoa.in +91 - 832 - 2279894/ 2281440

W

hile having lunch one afternoon, Francis Pacheco, a restaurateur, joined me at a table in his restaurant and spoke to me in hushed tones. “He has done zabardasti and taken the lands for the rally,” Francis said, using the Hindi word for arm twisting. Francis, who hails from the Santa Cruz area where the recent Modi rally was held, is deeply suspicious of the ruling BJP government and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. Living in the village which hosted the rally, and aware of the inside workings ahead of it, Francis thinks the rally was forced down the people’s throats. He said locals were not consulted about the land’s use and that the place was left in a mess after the rally, leaving villagers enraged. It’s true the BJP swept to power in Goa and that Congress, which traditionally banked on the Catholic vote, was decimated. But the details reveal a far more nuanced reality – and it would be a mistake to assume Goa will automatically join the BJP-mania of the rest of India. In Catholic-dominated Ilhas Tehsil province in the North, which includes the capital city of Panjim and surrounding areas, the Congress has won three of the five seats, while a fourth was won through courting the predominantly Catholic residents of San André by a candidate who is seen to be more inclusive - Vishnu Wagh. In Salcete in the South, the BJP has secured just one seat out of eight -- that of Cuncolim. Another three went to independents, two to the Goa Vikas party and two were retained by Congress.

In other areas like Mormugao and Bardes, where the Catholic population is sizeable, the BJP won by fielding Catholic candidates. “This should serve to dispel the popular notion that the BJP won over the Catholic vote. In majority Catholic areas, they either did not contest or lost, in the rest the Catholic vote went to Catholic members who newly joined the BJP,” said Jitendra Deshprabhu, a former Congress MLA. The question is whether these Catholic legislators who newly joined the BJP, will canvass for the party with the same gusto they canvassed for themselves, especially with a prime ministerial candidate as divisive as Modi. While Goa’s religion and caste fault lines may blur more than the rest of the country, they still exist. The three broad communities are the Catholics, the Hindu elite and the lower and middle-class Hindus. While Catholics like Francis are skeptical of Modi and the whole ‘Hindutva’ brigade, their vote for a BJP or a non-Congress candidate at local level elections will not necessarily translate into a vote for the BJP at the national

level. Catholics are a minority, comprising below 30% of the population. Hindus are about 60 percent and Muslims 10 percent. Here is where caste politics comes in. While a large section of the Hindu upper caste is known to root for the BJP, the lower caste Hindus which form a majority could swing either way, depending on who the final candidate chosen is. While a large section of this population appears to be relatively enamoured of Modi, especially since he is not a high caste Hindu, the mood could change. Much has changed since 2009, the year of the previous election. Back then Facebook was just starting out in Goa and the smartphone revolution was in its infancy. This time around the web and social media are sure to play an important role in driving people’s voting habits. Social media in Goa are abuzz with political commentary from partisans of every stripe. In the local cybersphere, the Congress is a clear loser with BJP-leaning Internet trolls seeking to dominate every forum. Congress supporters online know better than to defend a government that has made news for more wrong reasons than right. Not to be outdone, loyalists of the Aam Aadmi Party, or AAP, are putting up a brave fight, claiming to be the change and chiding the BJP for vain posturing. “Feku” is a term used to describe Modi for untrue ‘facts’ at speeches and “Pappu” is used to describe a young and unsure Rahul Gandhi. On the other side, lots of folks are blasting AAP for being “anarchist” despite its recent surges of

popularity. Of course, the real world isn’t the online world, and online moods do not necessarily reflect voting patterns, especially when you consider that at least 80 percent of the population doesn’t even have access to the Internet. While educated youth may be making choices from what they see online, the traditional fault lines of caste and religion still hold strong. For its part, the AAP has left everyone guessing. The party inducted, with much fanfare, two reputed personalities -- Dr Oscar Fernandes, a fiery activist, and Remo Fernandes, Goa’s top musical celebrity, both representative of Goa’s Catholic middle and elite classes. Their studied silence in the wake of the AAP’s recent drama-filled protest by the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the fear that it will alienate the middle classes from the party is definitely noteworthy. AAP Goa activist Rajashree Nagarsekar sounded a note of caution. “It is more important that the party gets down to business and organizes itself rather than jumping into the electoral fray prematurely,” Nagarsekar said. The AAP is considering a “different” way of choosing candidates, she added. “A prospective candidate will have to show that he is really wanted by the people by proving the support of at least 2,000 people through a kind of bottom up selection of candidates”. Going by the state’s history of protest voting, the AAP is sure to make a dent, but whether that will be enough to win seats remains to be seen. On December 19, Goa’s Liberation Day, when AAP held its first meeting post the Delhi success - a time when its popularity was presumably the highest - it attracted a mere 200 persons. A humble beginning one may say, but Goa isn’t Delhi and Central elections are not fought on local issues like electricity tariffs or erratic water supply. There are other players, too, who are fancying their chances. San André MLA Vishnu Wagh has made no bones about his disillusionment with the Parrikar government. He makes no denials when asked about plans to go “national”. But his cards are still close to his chest, and he, too, is biding his time. 

hat makes the largest spa chain in Goa so special? To find out, here’s a Question & Answer session with Tatva Elements Spa owners Anubhav Verma and Asha Arondekar, who are bringing the spa experience in Goa to a whole new level. Q: Let me ask you what everyone would like to know. How did Tatva Elements Spa come into existence? A: We realised that if one needed to visit a Spa, they would either have to compromise and visit the expensive spas in star hotels or sneak into one at various nooks and corners. We wanted to create a family spa where the entire family could walk in without hesitation. Thus was Tatva born with the tagline “The only family Spa”, aiming not just at tourists but also to give the Goans a fabulous spa experience. Q: What is the USP of Tatva Elements Spa? A: It is not one single thing which is unique about our spas. It is the whole experience which is derived from little things which make it happen. We offer small things like the posttreatment lounge room, where the guest relaxes before entering

the daily routine. All our spas look the same once you enter but have unique therapies offered at various outlets. We offer an Ancient String Massage at Panjim. We have a swimming pool attached at Calangute. We have a full-fledged salon attached at Margao. We have AC tents by the sea shore at Ashwem, and Ayurveda rituals at Candolim, amongst others. Q: You expanded real quickly to be the largest spa chain of Goa. How do you manage the business side of things? A: Truly speaking we took our time for expansion. It didn’t happen in days or weeks, but in the past two years we’ve been able to expand to about 10 spas. We really wanted to be sure of ourselves, that we would be able to handle the expansion especially in terms of staff and training, which are of utmost importance. We ensured we have enough trained people and in-house trainers with decades of experience to fall back on. Q: So now that you have started expansion, where do you see yourselves in the next 5 years? A: We see ourselves as an international organisation with a pan-India presence.

The aim is to have at least 200 spas in the next 5 years. We are sure this would be a milestone for a Goan organisation. Q: Spas in Goa are not looked upon as a great place to visit by people looking for professional spa. What is your take on it? A: The very fact that our tagline is “the only family spa” makes us ensure that we offer a professional spa experience. Right from the induction and training of staff to the regular mystery Audits that we conduct help us regularly to keep ourselves in check. We also take preventive steps like the display at our reception lounge to avoid customers who are not looking for a professional spa. Q: What message do you want to send to your clients? A: For us it’s about the details, and the care and attention we give. We make sure that everyone who comes to our spas has a delightful, exceptional experience.

A

tuk-tuk is defined as a three wheeler used for public transport in an Indian city. And the definition of insanity is yours truly travelling over half the country in one. All said and done this was doable as the highway is no stranger to me. The highway is an arduous and daunting playground which has its own set of rules much like city driving. It commands a certain set of road etiquette. Rules and regulations go out the window as you get to play with the big boys (truckers, elephant and livestock carriers, bullock carts and rage fanatics who thrive for the need for speed. There was nothing new that could have shocked me). Driving on a highway is enough to make one’s ECG behave like a dubstep Skrillex concert. I decided to partake in this whacky rickshaw run organized by The Adventurists as I had never driven a rickshaw in my life. 80 rickshaws, 220 participants from across India all doing their bit for various charitable causes like Cool Earth, which works for the protection of the rainforest banks. My

chosen charity was an international organisation called Frank Water: it represents a cause closer to home – to provide safe drinking water to 2000 villages in India. Many such watercrunched villages were along the route we travelled. I first became involved with this issue on an earlier trip to Rajasthan, where I woke up one day and discovered saline content in the water while brushing my teeth. That was an eye opener. The people living there, despite boiling the water for hours on end, still couldn’t work out the problem. It led to many water borne diseases and health issues. The fact is that in countries like India, lack of access to safe drinking water is a killer. People ask me why I did the rickshaw run. Heck even the organisers were perplexed; especially because I was the only Indian (never mind Goan) to participate. Charity is not a new phenomenon to me but doing something so arduous triggered everyone’s curiosity. Let’s just say for me it was a matter of National and State Pride to bring this problem to a global forum that an Indian could participate in. A feeling I could not describe even if I tried. From nerve wracking camel rides minus stirrups; I was dangling 7 feet high,

Give Back  15

hanging on for dear life... to routine stops by police not for a dose of ‘hafta’ but to offer us Samosa and Chai and take pictures with the ‘white skin’. It gave me an insight into the way we perceive ‘outsiders’. Bad roads and drunk strangers who offered us seedy accommodation and shady deals in the middle of the night... this was no joy ride. The scenic routes taken felt like bliss with only the rattling noise of the disgruntled rickshaw engine for company: just the engine and I and the outdoors. Scenery changed from state to state. From arid dry lands to the sight of mustard seeds growing in the fields; it made me think how lucky we are to live in this country. I felt proud. Doing 650 kms at a stretch over 12 hours is something I am used too. I travel in my car to client meetings that happen outside Goa. So doing 2500 kms would have been a breeze in record

breaking time. However the tuk tuk has limitations. With a top speed of 55 kms per hour and a guzzling capacity of 20 kms to a litre with a 7 litre tank capacity, it could pose challenges of technical expertise and management to a F1 pit crew before and during a race. Also there were 1 hour stop-overs to cool a furnace-hot engine. The sight of the finish line left us participants with a sense of melancholy. We wanted to carry on and if given the option we would have kept going forever. I once read this saying by Buddha (if I recollect correctly) – It’s not about the destination but the journey. Well I can say Amen to that! The writer is a Marketing Consultant and an avid adventurist from Goa. You can contact him on twitter @ nolansatwit

A journey to the ancient wisdom of sacred dance Chantelle has dedicated the last 7 years to an independent study on ethnology in dance from the Middle East, Ancient Persia and India. She has travelled extensively through India, Egypt and California to deepen her study and practice with Masters. Her research is also based on buying all the books she can on sacred dance and the ancient culture of goddess worship. In this program, Chantelle will introduce her dance journey starting from India, to courts of Ancient Persia, to whirling dervish traditions of RUMI and ending in the southern deserts of Egypt. re you in the mood to be treated like royalty? To luxuriate in a bath or be pampered with multiple therapies for a full three hours? These are some of the fabulous services offered at Tantrah Spa, a budding organization which has now forayed into the hospitality business. The company is guided by internationally qualified professionals who strive for excellence. The word Tantrah is derived from a combination of “Tattva” (the science of cosmic principles) and “Mantra” (the science of mystic sound and vibration of mind and body). Tantrah is thus the application of cosmic science to help rejuvenate and relax the mind and body. There are many spas in the world, but finding one

with personnel trained at world-class, international standards is not easy. And few such spas are available within city limits. Clients at Tantrah can detox, de-stress and rejuvenate themselves without having to leave town, as the spa is located right in the heart of Panjim city, on the grounds of the lovely Hotel Fidalgo (the spa has a separate street-facing entrance). Unlike in traditional spas, Tantrah has introduced a Western flavour to the Indian Ayurvedic Aroma section. In addition, it provides services which are generally not available in Indian spas. These include:  Spa cuisine  The Tantrah – an all-in-one service combining Destination, Day & Medi Spa in a single location, along with beauty and grooming services and Yoga therapy.  Internationally certified professionals from CIDESCO and CIBTAC (globally recognized diplomas). The signature rituals in Tantrah are a tribute to Indian beauty therapy. Tantrah gives clients a threehour experience with multiple therapies. And baths as prescribed in the Vedas, with unique blended oils and

natural products that are freshly prepared. The rain drop therapy and manipura are two ‘must try’ items. They make you feel like royalty. The ultimate luxury. It’s a Western concept blended with ancient Indian tradition. And it’s not something you’ll find at any other spa. You can take sips of your soup whilst relaxing. Or have a swim right after in a large, inviting pool. Tantra is like a haven for those seeking a little pampering. Here, angels are available to take you to bliss. Right in the heart of town. 

ubodh Kerkar, said to be Goa’s first ‘land artist, has been on the art scene since 1988. Self-taught, he has experimented with various mediums, keeping abreast with the contemporary art scenario around the world. He says, “Goan artists like Trinidade, F N Souza and Gaitonde, are world famous, but our young artists have not got sufficient exposure.” With this in view, last year he collaborated a show in New Delhi, titled Goa Reloaded, which was curated by Johnny ML, an eminent art critic. This year, the owner of Dhoomimal Art Gallery in Delhi, Uday Jain, asked Subodh to curate another show, and he’s done just that with “Balcao”, bringing together an extraordinary group of Goan artists and bringing them to Delhi. Says Subodh, “This kind of work gives me immense pleasure. Curating a show is a job which needs precision. It’s like weaving a necklace making sure all pieces fit together. I decided to title it ‘Balcao’ the most familiar feature of Indo-Portuguese architecture.” It took Subodh six months to organize the collection of 100 works by 15 artists. The theme revolves around a Goan ethos and lifestyle, and the cultural synthesis of Portuguese influences which permeated into the society. The show was inaugurated by the Portuguese Ambassador Jorge Roza de Oliveria, on 27th January, at the Stainless gallery in New Delhi. It also included ten paintings by the Maestro F N Souza, chosen from Uday Jain’s collection. The exhibition then moved to Dhoomimal Gallery, and will be there till the first week in March. The fact that it coincided with the India Art Fest in Delhi ensured good exposure. “Balcao” deals with many undercurrents in Goa’s history. The ‘Inquisition’, the darkest period of the Portuguese rule, inspired most of the artists. Others have dealt with mythology, commodities such as fruits, vegetables, chili, mosaic, and social scenarios and elements

introduced by the Portuguese. Pradeep Naik focuses on ‘Auto de Fe’- Act of Faith - burning those who did not accept the norms of Christianity. Viraj Naik has a collage titled ‘Phantoms’. The exaggerated expressions of Portuguese Governors are interspersed with bottles with phantom heads. “Ghosts of the Inquisition and ‘other kind’ still linger,” he asserts. Vaibhav Kitlekar’s sculpture, a bent figure of a man, projects suffering of the victim, while Kedar Dhondu explores emotional depths, with writhing figures set in a panel

suitably projecting the pain of being burnt alive. Subodh’s wall-mounted sculpture in wood replicates a wooden carved leg with a grotesque face. The original carved leg is currently on a table that was used in the Inquisition, now displayed at the Government museum. Three figures on each side draped in ‘Samaras’robes worn during the Inquisition - brings the macabre to the fore. In a fiberglass installation of his series ‘Chill Indigo’, he records, along with Kalidas Mahamal, ordinary day-to-day

happenings, made with consumables. It includes a picture from Goa’s first newspaper O Heraldo with the dates of Portuguese rule in bold text. Kalidas Mahamal is the youngest artist in the group, having studied for his Master’s at the S N University in Hyderabad. Moving to mythical scenarios, there’s Siddarth Gosavi’s deity Ganesh, with the offering of the ‘matoli’, platter of fruits, at its feet. Santosh Morajkar in his two sculptures draws a parallel between Hanuman and the Portuguese times: he is depicted carrying chillies and vegetables introduced by the Portuguese, along with medicinal plants. Sculptor Ramdas Gadekar portrays Alfonso de Albuquerque and Vasco de Gama in a large zebra striped figure made with metal scrap and fiberglass. It’s an animal body juxtaposed with human figuration, with a basket of marigold garlands and pineapple on its back. Julio D’Souza has stylish iconic figuration, and his focus is on ‘Masks’. The mosaic tile background is deftly painted, with Portuguese Governors shown wearing the masks. Chaitali Morajkar illustrates two diverse unresolved cultures connected to each other. A semi-abstract portraiture of a Hindu lady clad in a sari beside an unclad man. ‘Mrs. Naik and Souza’, she explains. She’s the only artist to compose

Arts & Entertainment  19 a semi-abstraction of the ‘ Balcao’, decorating it with marigold flowers. The small water colours set in the centre of a large frame lend distinctive dimensions. Shilpa Naik has insects in one painting and ants in another, on a mosaic floor. Fernanda D’ Melo is inspired by St. Francis Xavier. The only composition in charcoal is Harshada Kerkar’s expressive face of a Christian woman; it stands out from the works in mix media. Vitesh Naik is influenced by the liberated Christian women while Sripad Gurav captures expressions of a group of ordinary people in a semi-abstract painting. Among those who have guided and supported the show are Lutz Mahlewein, a TV journalist from Germany who’s been visiting Goa for twenty years and collects Goan art, and gallerists from Munich Erika Plate and Peter Mueller, who exhibit Indian artists. Here’s how Peter sums up the show: “The results are very reassuring. Those looking for fine art won’t be disappointed.”

Otters in Goa

By Arvind Prabhakar

I

’m sitting by the manas (small sluice gate) along with wildlife conservationist Atul Borker. He keeps looking at the water as he talks, never really making any eye contact with me. He tells me about the rich mangroves and its importance to the diverse wildlife it supports and then all of a sudden pauses, squints to focus on the surface of the water and points, “Look! It’s an otter!” I catch a quick glance of this little elusive mammal, before it dives back in, and it’s gone. I had no idea we had otters in our backwaters, and perhaps you didn’t either. Smooth-Coated Otters (Lutrogale perspicillata) are a globally threatened species and are highly protected by the Wildlife Protection Act of India, 1972. The mangroves in Goa are amongst the very few otter habitats left in Asia. SmoothCoated Otters are apex predators in the riverine ecosystem.

Very little is known and understood about their behaviour by scientists around the world. We do know that they require fresh, unpolluted water to survive, and that many of their habitats have been lost. This makes it vitally significant to support efforts to study and protect this fascinating mammal. The idea of WildFriday, a weekend wildlife event, started just after Atul and myself sighted an otter in the backwaters. Atul A. Sinai Borker is a research associate with Mhadei Research Center. He leads the otter conservation program in Goa. The challenge he faced was that the total number of people working on this program was five, which included two remote workers. Conservation is serious business. It requires extensive field work in addition

to outreach efforts. Atul needed a volunteer network to create awareness and scout remnant otter populations. The answer: motorcycles. Enter IndusRider, a community of like-minded people brought together with a common love for riding motorcycles, of which I am the founding member. Our goal is to engage with the real India on two wheels and extend the role of bikers from spectator to participant. This opportunity to contribute to conservation efforts in the locality was in perfect synchrony with IndusRider’s intentions. We decided to join hands with Atul Borker. IndusRider and the Mhadei Research Centre have come together to promote citizen participation in wildlife conservation efforts. The idea is to bring

people in to visit the otter habitats in a safe and responsible way. We meet on a Friday in town and are briefed by the experts on what they can expect to see. Over the weekend, we ride through some of most scenic parts of Goa. An authentic Goan lunch full of conversations and discussions around the day’s sightings wraps up the weekend. This first-hand experience is the best way to appreciate the depth and importance of this effort. It’s also your best shot at an actual otter sighting, if you’re lucky. The first Otter Habitat Ride was scheduled for the Republic Day weekend, 24th - 26th Jan. Among the participants was Eliza Massey, a fellow of the Jupiter Traveller. Eliza has been travelling across the globe on her GS 650 BMW motorcycle and is in her 15th month on the road. Eliza expressed that this was truly one of the best rides she has had so far in her epic adventure. She has promised to help spread the word and support the effort. IndusRider is really excited that the Otter Habitat Rides have begun and will continue for another month. This is call to action for you the reader, to stop being a reader and start being a rider. If you want to participate, please contact Arvind Prabhakar via email at Arvind@ indusrider.com. Rides are a maximum of 10 people so they fill up quickly. For more information on Otters in Goa visit www. wildabs.com/otters-in-goa/. Bring your friends and families along. The otters are counting on you. Arvind Prabhakar is the founder of IndusRider. He lives in Aldona, Goa and is a Designer, Photographer and an avid motorcyclist. 

ith the opening of the Quan Spa, a world-renowned brand that promises a whole new world of spa & wellness treatments, the hotel has completed the last leg of an extensive renovation and is now the Goa Marriott Resort & Spa. Quan, a Chinese word that literally means ‘a source of pure water’ represents a spa that seeks to provide a path to wholeness and wellbeing, while embracing the time-honored healing practices of its local culture. The Quan Spa has 4 individual treatment rooms and 1 couple treatment room with a bath tub. All the rooms feature a relaxing sofa, shower cubicle and rest rooms. There is also a steam room, chilled

showers and a Jacuzzi; a brand new Fitness Centre (gymnasium) and a Kids Club as part of the recreational facilities. Who has designed the Spa The architect responsible for the creative thought process and design inputs is Barry Withington of Island Design Studio Ltd. which is based in Hong Kong. The design was conceptualized with inputs from the management and owners of the hotel. The process took into account Marriott International’s global spa standards and infused a touch of the local culture. The fundamental concept of Goa Marriott’s Quan Spa is based on the five great elements – Earth (Ira), Water (Jal)

Air (Vayu), Fire (Tejas) and Wind (Akash). This theme is predominant in the décor of the spa and the five treatment rooms are also named after these elements. There is also an attempt to create positive energy in the treatment room by having Tibetan singing bowls and raw crystals placed in strategic locations of the treatment rooms. Elemental based unique music for each treatment room and public areas like the relaxation lounge is the other signature feature. Thought process behind the spa The brief was to extend the existing Spa facility and raise the standards to meet Marriott Quan Spa status. There is now an expanded reception area with lounge seating and several retail displays showcasing Marriott’s unique spa product range. Existing changing areas have been fully renovated and upgraded to now include steam rooms, cold drench showers and an increased number of lockers. Another new addition is the relaxation room, where guests can recline in armchairs whilst watching TV or gazing over the private garden. Five new stand alone treatment rooms have been added, each one with large bathroom, dedicated treatment area and secluded relaxation zone with private outdoor terrace. Materials & color palette used Natural materials have been used wherever possible and the colours are neutral, calm and subdued. Fabrics have subtle floral or leaf patterns, or simply rely on colour and texture to give a natural feel. A combination of light and dark timber has been used throughout the spa, with natural stone counters and ceramic

tiles in off-white and neutral tones. The color palette is largely earthy; while contrasting colors feature in some areas, the treatment rooms have neutral colors for a soothing effect and a contemporary feel. In public areas we have used a dull golden finish to elevate the classy vibe. As for material, wood predominates, again to broaden the earthy feel while the furniture is finished in leather and natural fabric. Treatments Our 8 therapists have been trained in all Western, Oriental and Indian therapies. They are also certified in Thalgo La Beaute Marine- France. We have a waiting area where you are greeted at the beginning of your spa experience with a welcome drink and a wet towel as well as a relaxation lounge where you can complete your spa experience amidst tasting detoxifying teas. ‘Goan Magic’ is the signature treatment of Quan- Goa. Western, Indian and Oriental methodologies come together to synthesize this signature massage. With long loopy movements, the masseur expertly channels toxins and other harmful elements out of the body. Body and mind strike a fine resonance induced by the smooth application of a hot herbal compress and oil, to attain the state of wellbeing. Another signature package is the ‘Celebration Wedding Ritual’ which is a program of relaxation inducing spa treatments (steam, body polish, aroma fusion massage, facial, milk bath) taken together in the comfort, privacy and luxury of our Couple’s Room to calm pre-wedding stress (or take some time out together for a post-reception break).

When the Tao is forgotten, there is righteousness’ (Tao Te Ching) On first reading this passage it could be assumed that forgetting the Tao is a spiritual act since it leads to doing the right thing. After all, isn’t righteousness the popular goal of all religions? Apparently not, for the Taoists. In fact, certain Taoist Sages in the past were notorious for mocking what they considered to be the Confucianists’ misguided commitment to morality and duty. So what could be better than righteousness? Remembering the Tao. And what is the Tao? It is the way or the way of nature. Taoists often use aspects of nature to describe the Tao, comparing it to the flow of a river - an effortless activity. It is a state of being in which

actions flow with spontaneity, even seemingly virtuous ones. Yet the reality is that such a state can’t be reached by the same mind that is obsessed with righteousness. The goal of morality will always be a contrived undertaking. Furthermore, righteousness can only exist with its opposite and such duality is not considered the Tao, which when further defined is one, all things, the absolute. But how does one find such a way of tapping into this Tao? In a word, Meditation. This practice can align us with the Tao, thus transcending dualities like righteousness. So am I suggesting that doing the right thing is not important? My response to that would be to first ask ‘what is right’? Morality has occupied the mind of many great thinkers throughout history but I think one of greatest examples of

this ‘beyond-righteousness’ that the Tao is pointing to is Jesus Christ. I am not a Christian and I cannot prove beyond doubt everything that’s written in the New Testament. What I can say is that Jesus certainly appears beyond mere virtue. What I mean is that, according to the gospel stories, Jesus appears to act with incredible spontaneity. It seems no one knew what to expect from him next. While being recognised by some as righteous, he was also hated by others. He called his religious leaders snakes and sons of hell, while wrecking an entire temple market, overturning stalls and all. This doesn’t sound very Christian does it? Christians often refer to this as healthy indignation but if we turn back to the Tao, I contest that we see in this Jesus an example of ‘beyond righteousness’. He was not trying to be

a particular way, he was the way. When we align ourselves with the Tao through regular meditation, we too can begin to let go of contrived, karmic actions and be the way. It is as though the universe flows through you and there is a rightness and certainty in all your ways for they are not born of effort, confusion or contrivance or the law but by the flow of the spirit of Tao rising in you. I would even say that a good sign of being one with the Tao is eccentricity, a quality that is not uncommon with Jesus and clearly notable in the character of the great Taoist Sages. So I say, let’s rid ourselves of righteousness and align ourselves with the source, the Tao from which all things emanate and the universal fruits of the spirit will lay bare for all to enjoy…Let’s meditate!

O

n the last day of the Lusofonia Games 2014, Jan 29th, the Wushu finals at the Multipurpose Indoor Stadium in Peddem were dedicated to bouts of Sanshou, or Sanda sub disciplines. Team India finished the final rounds of Taolu by raking in some moolah. The final rounds of Sanshou were in stark contrast to the graceful and elegant stances of Taolu. The adrenaline rush of power punches and stinging kicks filled the air as India went on to dominate and win all the matches. At the end of the day and the Games, Jojo, the red cockerel icon with a white tee-shirt, awesome biceps (winglets if you like) and attitude, stood up tall and proud. His terracotta ancestors, with globe-shaped abdomens had kept cool stored drinking water in Goan kitchens. This evening, he lorded it over the closing ceremony at the Pandit Jawaharlal stadium in Fatorda. As the flame of the Lusofonia Games 2014 died out, the Games flag was lowered and handed over to Mr Mario Rosa de Almeida (Secretary General, ACOLOP) by Goa’s Chief Minister, Mr. Parrikar. After felicitating the sportsmen an enthralling medley of entertainment followed. Parrikar spoke. He said it was time to work hard again for the state’s

next sporting milestone: The National Games in 2016. “Goans got a chance to see an international standard event. We could see the sports-persons’ passion and enthusiasm. One does not become successful by accident or coincidence, but by sheer hard work. This is what these Games have shown us.” We, who had seen the stadiums at the different places grow month by month, had been surprised at the speed that went contrary to the Goan spirit of susegaad. We were impressed, too, that our athletes could run like the wind, jump like hares, and play team games without quarreling amongst themselves. Conclusion: when Goans want to do something, they do it. And very well, too. Mario Rosa de Almeida said so. He said: “We will never forget the kindness, smiles and support of the wonderful people of Goa. From the most professional organising staff, amazing volunteers, spectators and

public, Goans have made these Games successful and memorable. You have shown the Lusofone world, your passion and heritage.” We, too, aren’t going to forget the lesson that when one attempts something and works at it, dreams can become realities. De Almeida then thanked the athletes: “… for travelling from so far and celebrating respect, fair play enthusiasm and passion. Each and every one of you has been an inspiration to people on five continents.” These words should find their way to the notice-boards of schools and colleges. Goa’s Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar said: “Winning is not everything, but participation is important and so is getting yourself immersed in the sport.” Amen. President of the Goa Olympic Association and North Goa MP Shripad Naik dedicated the Games to all those who worked day and night to make the Games a success, and despite a tight

schedule made themselves available to meet deadlines. “For the first time we have got 85 medals…Goa will have more and more national and international sporting events in the years to come.” Tathaastu. Francisco Martins and his team had put together a colourful float parade which depicted Goa’s culture and heritage. Hema Sardessai, Merlin D’Souza, Lalan Desai and Group, Kalangan from Margao, Elvis Goes and group, the dance duo of Jason and Sylvia along with their dance troupe, provided the singing, music and dance. The elaborate and complex laser beam show and the fireworks showed that this little State could hold its own when it came to glamour. (Not surprised; just the weekend before the ceremony, designer Wendell Rodricks was awarded the Padmashri, wasn’t he?) For the National Games…. Let the slogging begin. 

The table of the registration done and placement provided by the Regional Employment Exchange at Panjim and Margao from 2007- 2013 (up to November 2013). 2007

P

riyanka Bidaye, an actress who starred in the Konkani films Aalisha and Saavariya, received a call letter from the State Employment Exchange asking her to come for an interview for the post of industrial security guard in the state industries department. Ms. Bidaye, a post-graduate from Goa University, had registered with the Exchange in 2007. Even if she weren’t happily employed as a successful actress, it’s safe to say she would not be looking for a job toting rifles at a factory! And yet this is the kind of incident that appears to happen quite often at the employment exchange, which has a long way to go before it can fulfill its mission of providing jobs to the jobless. Here’s how it works. Banks, public sector companies and various departments register with the Employment Exchange to get a good choice of candidates. The exchange, which falls under the Department of Labour and Employment, functions as an interface between employers and jobseekers. It proposes a list of potential candidates to employers seeking to fill vacant positions. Sunil Gaonkar, the employment officer at Panjim, says: “We give the employers a list of suitable candidates who have registered at our employment exchange as well as place an advertisement for the required post in the newspaper. The employers then choose the candidates and send call letters to suitable candidates. We try and see that candidates registered with us are given jobs in the private as well as the public sector.” More than one lakh Goans are currently jobless, or around 7 percent of the work force, one of the highest rates in India and well above this year’s expected national figure of 3.8 percent. Only a very small portion of Goa’s jobless get placed through the employment exchange, unfortunately. Gaonkar pointed to a number of imperfections in the system, including outdated information. “We give the database and suitable candidates’ list to the employers having vacant posts in their companies. The actual selection lies in their hands”, he said.

“Many proposals have been sent. They are yet to be finalized.” Alka Mardolkar, Statistical Assistant at the Panjim Regional Employment Exchange said, “Between January – December 2012, 26,322 candidates registered. We submitted 29,619 candidates as reference for the 3,584 vacancies that arose. 1,833 candidates got placed.”

“The reason people get jobs in inappropriate fields is because of misinformation provided. For example, at times candidates register with us when they have completed their S.S.C. Subsequently they don’t come back to add the degrees or additional courses they have done.” What exactly is being done to address the problem of unemployed Goan youth?

It shows that in seven years, 11,406 of the 1,46,066 candidates registered got permanent placement. Here’s what you have to do to register with the employment exchange: Get a residential certificate (proof that you are staying in a particular locality for an extended period, issued by the Mamlatdar of the Taluka). Get all original certificates proving your educational qualifications. Fill the employment exchange registration form (available at all the regional employment exchange offices and submit it along with the relevant documents mentioned above). After confirming your credentials, the regional employment exchange office will give you a registration number and the process is complete. Whenever you want to update your records, report to the same registration section on any working day. The registration is valid for a fixed time. It has to be renewed. If you fail to renew your registration in due time, you can apply for renewal within two months. After that it lapses. Goa’s Labour and Employment Minister, Avertano Furtado said in the Assembly: “… there are 1,04,789 unemployed persons registered with the state Employment Exchange; 58,226 males and 46,563 females. The problem of unemployment is being tackled at various levels. The government has taken various initiatives: promotion of new industries, giving a boost to tourism, ensuring that locals get priority in employment and providing training to unemployed persons under the Minimum Employment Assurance Scheme.” Considering incidents like the one involving actress Priyanka Bidaye, perhaps the Personnel Department of the State Government needs to figure out who isn’t doing their job, and maybe have them join the growing ranks of the unemployed!
