Taking Goa By Storm

“A

narrow-minded person thinks, this is for me and that is for another. For those who are broad-minded, liberal or noble, the entire world is one big family.” - from the Vedic scripture Maha Upanishad Through 20-30th November I’ll be taking no phone calls, answering few emails, house-working at unearthly hours, ferrying tired feet to and from Kala Academy to Inox to Marquinez and back. I will be arm-chair travelling via IFFI (International Film Festival, India) to other countries, centuries and sharing others’ life-experiences, through films. The opening film is going to be Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s The President. The Grand Master by Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai will bring the curtain down. By the time this paper reaches you, the Big B would have inaugurated IFFI at Dr Shama Prasad Mukherjee

stadium near Panjim. And the ever-young Rajnikant would have received the Centenary Award for the Indian Film Personality of the Year. Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, Swedish filmmaker Jan Troell and Polish film-maker Krzysztof Zanussi are the other Guests of Honour for this Festival. Film-makers and watchers in Asia take IFFI seriously. There are other festivals in Nashik, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, even in the

home of Bollywood, but this is THE one that aims at (quoting a government press release) “providing a common platform for the cinemas of the world to project the excellence of film art, contributing to the understanding and appreciation of film cultures of different nations in the context of their social and cultural ethos, and promotes friendship and cooperation among people of the world.” Phew, quite a mouthful. Born in 1952, IFFI was the first International Film Festival held in Asia, organized by the Films Division with the patronage of India’s first Prime Minister. That edition was non-competitive, had twenty-three countries participating with forty feature films and about a hundred short films. From the 3rd edition, IFFI became competitive. IFFI was subsequently taken to Madras, Delhi, Calcutta and Trivandrum until in 2004 it came to Goa to roost. The Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government, declaring Goa its permanent venue. How long it will take to build the necessary infrastructure, how it will impact public transport, rents, travel and

How is it?

hospitality related businesses only time will tell. The day taxi-drivers can talk knowledgeably about films, as they do in Mumbai, I’ll be convinced that Goa, or at least Panjim, is worthy of the permanent label. “… it will soon become an internationally famous venue like Cannes,” Union Minister Javadekar has claimed. Waiting and watching. Last week, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said China is the “Focus Country’” in this year’s festival. Besides screening twelve films, the Chinese are bringing a working group that will engage with Indian filmmakers to discuss collaborations. Both countries have signed an audio-visual co-production agreement. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Directorate of Film Festivals and the Government of Goa take a lot of effort to sift and sort what will be screened here and who the guests will be. Last year, IFFI witnessed several firsts, including a film produced and directed by an Afghan director and a film from north-east India. This year, ‘Minefield’ – the directorial debut project of young Assamese filmmaker Shiladitya Bora – has been selected among the fourteen international final entries for the prestigious Co-Production Market at the Goa International Film Festival of India (IFFI) Film Bazar. Those fourteen international projects to be showcased in the eighth edition of the Film Bazaar Co-Production Market (FBCPM) include films from the US,

It’s good. Just that, the book was better.

Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Norway, France, Germany and Singapore. This FBCP Market, the only one of its kind in South Asia, provides a platform for filmmakers with South Asian stories to make the right connections to get their projects financed. It is organized annually alongside the IFFI. The directors and producers invited to the event present their projects to co-producers, funders and distributors from across the world. Film Bazaar, which will be held from November 20 to 24, has played a crucial role in mentoring a new Indian cinematic sensibility. If you’ve seen NFDC co-produced The Lunchbox, Ship of Theseus and Titli, which premiered at the Cannes this year and Margarita with a Straw, which was screened at the Toronto Film Festival, you’ll understand why. I’m going to visit the Film Bazaar’s Romance Filmwriters’ Lab to see what it’s about. What the participating filmmakers will bite their nails for are the Golden Peacock Awards given for Best Director, Special Jury Award, Best Actors Male and Female and the Centenary Award. IFFI 2014 will be screening 179 films from 75 countries across categories: • World Cinema (61 films), • Master-strokes (11 films), • Festival Kaleidoscope (20 films), • Soul of Asia (7 films), • Documentaries (6 films), • Animated Films (6 films). The Indian Panorama section includes forty-one feature and non-feature films and seven from the North-East, which is the focus region this year. Of late, Marathi films have been making an impact. Paresh Mokashi’s second Marathi outing ‘Elizabeth Ekadashi’, the opening film of the Panorama section, is on my must-see list. As is the biopic of an Oriya freedom fighter who had to wage a long battle to get his due after Independence. I will attend the workshops and master-classes if I can squeeze in. They’re door-keepers’ nightmares, and the invitees’ delight. Hopefully the e-ticketing will reduce the queues at the counters. Nothing can stop them from snaking outside the entrances, though. In these queues, I have met people who have made their bookings months in advance, who seriously study films and discuss them on and off-line with like-minded virtual or real friends, and visit Goa just for

these ten days year after year after year. They have permanent bookings in local, inexpensive hotels. Some of them go to other film festivals, too, but IFFI, they say, is the most charming. No reason to disbelieve them. The venue, along the banks of the Mandovi, is just one of the attractions. Whether or not IFFI gets as famous as Festival de Cannes, we Goans can still boast of something akin to it. We have miles to go before we’re even close to the Venice, Toronto, Sundance or Berlin International Film Festivals. Berlin is the largest film festival worldwide, based on attendance. But… we’ve taken the first tottering steps. Perhaps north Goa is more crowded during IFFI than over New Year’s Eve because it coincides with the novenas and feast of the 16th-century Basque missionary-saint Francis Xavier. This year, there’s an exposition, too, which will add to the woes of the police and the coffers of the taxi-men. The first IFFI was an iffy thing: the evening before the inaugural ceremony, writer-friend Bevinda Colaco and I sat on the steps of the Kala Academy with the Chief Minister, keeping our fingers crossed. Overnight, workers, supervisors, managers, officers who had been slogging over weeks, did perfect finetuning and if there were goof-ups, they were kept out of lay visitors’ sight. There wasn’t much traffic, and we could walk on Bandodkar Marg, enjoying the breeze, the works of Goa’s artists and classical music programs. The stalls of instant foods have replaced those today, adding to convenience (and garbage). I wish the organizers could mix and match elegance and essentials. One year, the IFFI was split between Margao and Panjim: lots of hard, complicated work for the organizers. Never again, someone must have sworn. Amen, I say to that. May the IFFI remain this side of the Zuari forever and ever. Amen again. Next week, I’ll be here again, telling you stories from the reel world. And experiences between the Entertainment Society of India, Inox and Kala Academy.

Goa World Music and Dance Project presents Two Evenings of music with Pandit Mukesh Sharma

M

ukesh Sharma Is India’s leading exponent of Sarod. His highly versatile and aesthetic perception of the sarod has enabled him to touch the most profound depths of this instrument. His soulful rendering of the raga, purity of style and uniqueness of imagination combine with brilliant technique blending elements of “Gayaki” (vocal rendering) and “Layakari” (instrumental rhythmic patterns) to make his recitals enchanting. The outstanding feature of his rendering is that it not only reflects the musician’s mood and his nuances but also adds to the overall power and effect of the ragas. His music is filled with melodic command and rhythmic complexity that make an experience incomparably sweet, melancholic and joyous. His father, the late Pandit Rasik Behari Lal, was an eminent sarod artist, a disciple of the great sarangi maestro Pandit Ram Narayan. Mukesh had his initial training from late Pandit Suprabhat Paul, the late Dr. Ramaballabh and Pandit Birju Maharaj. He has also received guidance from the sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan.

YOU CAN WRITE A SCREENPLAY! Professional Screenwriting Courses Launching at IFFI By Sapna Shahani very year, IFFI and the NFDC Cinemas of India Film Bazaar provide opportunities for new relationships to unfold. This time around, Oscar nominated filmmaker and curator of the Goa Writers Retreat, Ashvin Kumar, is tying up with a UK-based screenwriting academy to offer intensive courses right here in Goa. The legendary ex head of the BBC drama department and screenwriting guru John Yorke along with the Professional Writing Academy will begin with a master class at the Film Bazaar, which is to take place at the Marriott Hotel in Panjim from 20-24 November. Yorke is also the founder of the BBC Writers Academy and former head of Channel 4 Drama. He is bringing an internationally acclaimed, tried-and-tested set of courses and script development methods to India, beginning in 2015 that scriptwriters, film studios and development executives in India can benefit from. “John is responsible for more hours of British drama than anyone else, and the largest audiences for drama in UK TV history,” Ashvin says. “His bestselling book Into The Woods is revolutionising screenwriting in the UK by helping writers shape their ideas and produce stories that resonate with international audiences.” A week’s retreat in a beautiful residential setting in Goa is followed by 15 weeks of intensive study online via webinars, video conferencing and chats with tutors in the UK. Writers enter with an idea, story or first draft and leave with a completed screenplay. What’s more is that the course will be “reasonably priced” and will no doubt open doors to further opportunities, given the glittering credentials of trainers including David Roden and Christina Bunce besides the aforementioned Yorke and Kumar.

E

Well known in film circles as the youngest Indian to be nominated for an Oscar and winner of awards like the BAFTA for his short film The Little Terrorist in 2005, Ashvin has been keen on teaching screenwriting in Goa for some time now. His years of experience writing for films and documentaries like the double national award winning Inshallah, Football and Inshallah, Kashmir, will be of great value to those seeking to tell complex stories for the cinematic medium. “My role here is to facilitate and make sure that Indian screenwriters are able to access the best quality of instruction that the world has to offer… To bring the idea of being mentored by some of the top UK talent in drama and screenwriting,” Ashvin shares. The screenplay of his current project Noor based on a young Kashmiri girl’s search for her disappeared father, was one of only eight projects selected by the Sundance Institute and the Mumbai Mantra Lab this year. Besides Noor, Ashvin is working on other film projects as well, which take him around the world. “I am just completing a documentary for the UN on undocumented female domestic migrant workers. We’ve finished shooting New York and Zurich and our final schedule is in Kuala Lumpur.” IFFI provides filmmakers like Ashvin Kumar an opportunity to interact with the global industry. “Each year I see more and more interest from countries around the world in Indian cinema, which is great,” he says. However, he reflects some of the criticism the film festival has received regarding not meeting its full potential. “I think there’s a lack of vision and execution capabilities as to what can be done. There’s nothing stopping it from becoming the major film festival of South Asia. It requires will and commitment. And it certainly should be run by filmmakers and festival professionals.” The government can play a role in helping joint ventures like this succeed, however. “We would be very keen to explore how the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting may be able to support this educational venture in films,” Ashvin adds. 

N

ow here’s a surprise in North Goa. There are a number of Italian food options available in this particular corner of our planet, and some actually quite good. What we didn’t expect, however, when we visited Mamma Mia, the Italian eatery at Resort Rio on the banks of the Baga River, was that the quality of food here would deserve a spot right at the top of the Best-Italian-Food-in-Goa list. When it comes to depth of flavor, authenticity, creativity and presentation,

Mamma Mia’s offerings are top notch, and when we say that, we mean by international standards. What we liked best about Chef Murugesan Perumal’s creations was that they reflected a commitment to “homecooked” Italian food, the kind you get at the real “mamma mia’s” house in Sicily. This is not “concept Italian”, contemporary takes on old recipes, or “minimalist Italian”, dollops of this or that requiring a microscope to detect. Good, hearty, “real” Italian food is supposed to not just please your palate,

but to warm your heart and soul as well. Chef Perumal’s does. Let’s take a few of the dishes we sampled to explain what we mean. The Linguine Con Frutti Di Mare, a classic dish found throughout Italy, contains king prawns, mussels, clams and squid in a tomato sauce with garlic, white wine and parsley. Mamma Mia’s menu describes the dish as “vibrant” and “colourful” and the tomato sauce as “rich.” All this is true, of course, but what the menu doesn’t state is that this particular dish, if served in one of the finest restaurants in Rome itself, would hold its own and definitely NOT be laughed out of town. That says a lot for a restaurant 6,500 kilometres away from Italy, on the edges of the sub-continent! The same holds true for the Penne with Squids and Tomato and the Rigatoni Al Manzo Piccante (baked rigatoni pasta with ragu, beef meatballs, green chillies, fire-roasted red peppers, white wine and caramalised onions, topped with mozzarella cheese). With a single bite, one can taste the painstaking efforts that went into making these dishes as delightful as they are. If you’re Italian, it’s not unlike what you might expect from Mamma Mia – My Mama – a woman who never just goes through the motions and who always cooks with love and a joyous heart. Ok, so in this case your mama’s not a gray-haired Italian lady, but an Indian dude named Murugesan. But make no mistake, the love and joyous heart are there. You can taste it in his food. It seems we’ve gotten a bit ahead of ourselves here, jumping into the main courses before discussing the appetizers. The Prosciutto e Rucola, smoked prosciutto ham with peppery rocket, sliced chestnut mushroom and Parmesan cheese, was made with gorgeous imported ingredients that were a joy to behold. And the Calamari With Lime Dressing, grilled rings of calamari served on a bed of rockets with lime dressing,

was another winner. Now here’s an important point that needs to be mentioned. The official name of this restaurant is Mamma Mia Ristorante Italiano & Pizzeria. Note the final word. Yes, this place is, as much as anything else, a pizzeria, with pizzas made in a large, highly attractive stone oven with a circular dome that lights up in the night. We couldn’t try all the pizzas on the menu (there are a lot of them) but we did sample the Prosciutto e Bufala pizza, which is a stone-baked tomato and mozzarella pizza, finished with ripped buffalo mozzarella, smoked prosciutto, rocket and Calabrian oregano. This was one good pizza, folks. We mean it. When we dined at Mamma Mia, we sat outside at night, overlooking one of the largest and most beautiful pools in Goa, in addition to the Baga River. Live music played in the background, and the feeling was actually quite magical. Given the limitations of anatomy and appetite, there were quite a few dishes we would have love to have tasted but couldn’t. These include: • BUTTERFLY KING PRAWNS Butterfly king prawns oven-roasted with a slice of Italian artisan Altamura bread in garlic butter. Served sizzling in a skillet. • RISOTTO GAMBERONI Rich risotto with king prawn, courgette, tomato and a tasty kick of red chilli; garnished with a large, shell-on king prawn. • TERRINA MEDITERRANEA Chicken and king prawns casserole baked in tomato sauce with courgettes, butter beans, olives, red peppers, garlic and raisins, with a dash of white wine. Served with rosemary & sea salt bread. • GRILLED PORK CHOPS Tender grilled pork chops served with saute veggies and apple sauce The dessert offerings ranged from Italian plum and pistachio tart to lemon meringue pie to honeycomb cheesecake to tiramisu to molten chocolate pudding with vanilla gelato. We went with the tiramisu and were NOT disappointed. Kudos to Chef Perumal and his team at Mamma Mia for an unforgettable meal and evening. We WILL be back!  Resort Rio, Arpora, Bardez, M. +91 832 2267300 www.resortrio.com

o ahead, defy your overseas friends in their adamant insistence that having fun in Goa only involves drunken dancing in a club and a gorgeous tan from saltwater swimming. It’s been said time and again that Goa is much more than just the beach. But most of these articles tend to be published during the monsoons when a day at the beach is pretty much a wet blanket. But it doesn’t always have to be so. Here’s a chance to get away from the crowd-choked areas that call all and sundry during ‘season time’ and still have photographs that will make your social media followers go green.

1. Karting Feel a bit of the adrenaline rush and zip around a track where you can’t endanger the general public. You don’t need to be a speed junkie to enjoy karting; a little competitive spirit will do just fine. Children and adolescents find racing around bends bordered by rubber tires quite exciting, so it’s also possible for parents to keep them busy while they catch up on local gossip. Race around the karting tracks in Arpora or Nuvem. (http://www.thegoavilla.com/goa/ sport/goa-karting.html)

2. Boating at Mayem Lake

Remember those school trips as a child? Or perhaps even a family trip where you were plonked into a pedal boat and forced to pose with the sun in your eyes? It doesn’t have to be this traumatic. Mayem Lake has its own charm with its placid water, lush greenery all around and a large shady park to finish some reading in. Goa Tourism runs the Mayem Lake Resort with selfcontained cottages should you feel like soaking in the vicinity. In the nearby Kumbhar vaddo, artisan families make Ganesh idols out of terracotta – a change from the regular clay idols. Try boating options at the Champions Yacht Club, or stay at the Mayem Lake Resort

3. Live in a Portuguese mansion

Pretend you lived in a bygone era without the stiff frills of aristocratic society. There are a number of old Portuguese mansions across Goa that offer a trip back in time. Some built as far back as the 17th century, they are filled with antiques, paintings and curios that each tell a story; and rooms that whisper rumours about the people who lived there over the ages. Both Siolim House and Casa Britona were originally built more than 300 years ago.

4. Go off the grid Yes, literally. Leave everything behind and live without a fridge, fan or easily accessible shops. Is the city soul in you already scared? Don’t be. Tucked away in the Western Ghats is a farm that indulges in what it likes to call ‘micro tourism’ with simple eco-friendly solutions, lots of outdoor activities including an overnight trek in the wilderness and a fusion of multi-cultural cuisine out in the wild. Sounds too good to be true, but Off The Grid certainly delivers.

5. Pedal your way around Goa

Before the festive spirit leads to all sorts of lazy indulgent malaises, repair that forlorn bicycle and pedal into the hinterland. Stay away from the touristy areas where over-enthusiastic bus drivers can turn your legs to jelly. Try the stretch from Chandor to Quepem and its surrounding areas where you can stop and admire the golden fields. Stop at the Palácio do Deão in Quepem to admire an ancient legacy of architecture, art and décor, and perhaps grab a bite to eat.

6. Kayak down a river

Stretch those arms and get yourself up a creek. With a paddle though. Goa has more beautiful rivers than you’ve cared to notice. Exchange loud-mouthed tourists, pesky sand bugs and the stench of jet ski fuel for a light kayak and oars, thick foliage bent double over the river banks, and perhaps a mocking monkey or two. Goa Kayaking has a number of options.

7. Stuff it

Eat more spoonfuls of indulgent food that your brain can comprehend. When your workout programmes reward you with a cheat day, an all-you-can-eat buffet is what you ought to gift yourself. Do justice to that famous appetite of yours at Coffee Heaven or House of Lloyds.

8. Make some high-flying pals

These will come without the pretentious behaviour affiliated with the human sort. Grab a pair of binoculars and head into thickly wooded areas. You’ll get a lesson in silence (switch those phones off and stop chattering), patience and observation. There’s a vast range of species out there so you might want to lug along a copy of ‘The Book of Indian Birds’ by Dr Salim Ali, the 13th edition of which has illustrations by Goa’s own Carl D’Silva. Get a personalised introduction to Goa’s avian treasures with Rahul Alvares. Don’t overthink it; simply get that calendar out and cross out dates. Friends and family will thank you for a refreshing change to the fun times they’re used to. 

Discover Middle Eastern Grill in the Middle of Candolim By Shubham Gupta

hink of the Mediterranean Sea. Let the thought of the blissful breeze, sparkling sea, and a voluptuous view move you. Need anything else? Someone to hold hands with as you gawk at the sunset, perhaps. And what about some delightful food reflecting the finest culinary traditions of Turkey, Morocco, Lebanon, and Greece? As fun as it would be to actually go there, you need not, because we have something right here in Goa that includes all of the above. You just have to substitute the word “Arabian” for “Mediterranean” in front of the word “Sea.” Enter Izgara Grill, the Meditteranean restaurant and bar at the new Acacia Hotel, located on the main Candolim strip. For true Mediterranean flavours with a unique and inspiring ambience, Izgara is wonderful option for lovers of food and good times in Goa. Stepping out of the elevator on the fourth floor of the Acacia Hotel, I was generously exposed to the sea breeze coming from the west. An open terrace restaurant high enough for you to ignore the hustle of the Candolim beach belt and gaze right at the Arabian Sea is what you’ll get at Izgara Grill.

As I sat on those beige chairs with turquoise cushions, the zest of the coal diffusing into the gentle breeze convinced me that I was on for a truly Mediterranean experience. To start off the culinary part of the experience, I laid my hands on the hummus marakeesh, freshly baked pita bread with hummus topped with green and black olives. The pita dough was coarse enough to make those little triangular pieces of bread really pop while the hummus was very smooth with just the right amount of tahini in it. What really amazed was that despite the smooth hummus texture, I could taste granules of fried sesame, meaning that the tahini was also prepared fresh. Next up was ‘Kisir’, an originally Turkish salad tossed in bulgur (cracked wheat), sweet pepper paste and finely chopped vegetables. It contained the acidity of lime juice, richness of virgin olive oil, and freshness of Italian parsley, all at the same time. Talking of Turkish delights, it was time for some savoury lamb offerings. Kebbeh Milki, a Lebanese delicacy, awaited. The simplest of lamb recipes, Kebbeh Milki, also called Kibbeh Milk, is a surprising combination of milk and lamb broth. With seasoning as simple as dry mint and

garlic, Kebbeh Milki’s melt-in-your-mouth texture made it deliciously rich. As I sat and gazed at the palms dancing with the wind right before the land hits the sea, I sat in anticipation of what was to come. And there it was, plated to excellence, another popular Turkish snack called Muska Boregi. It took me by surprise since it is traditionally stuffed with spinach. These deep fried pastry pockets, however, were interestingly filled with feta cheese, olives and fresh parsley. The flavours that were so well blended together were further complemented by the perfectly done pastry pocket, which was crisp at the surface while soft inside. Moving on from the starters, it was time to have some of the best chicken soup I HAD EVER TASTED! Sehriyeli Tavuk Corbasi, originally Turkish chicken soup prepared in vermicelli, was the breakthrough dish of the evening. Subtly flavoured chicken stock with a hint of garlic and pepper was held together by the vermicelli soaked in it. Another draw was the way it was plated. A blob of crispy fried vermicelli balanced on a slice of garlic toast, further balanced on a chunk of chicken, kept the excitement levels up. The main courses were an exercise in heightened taste. I sampled the Tavuk Izgara, grilled chicken thighs marinated with cumin, garlic, yogurt, and paprikabased paste served with French fries. Seasoned with lemon juice, the tender and juicy chicken upheld all the flavours

perfectly, including the smoky tang from the coal. Soon enough it was time for dessert, and guess what? There was Baklava. One of the most varied desserts served in the Mediterranean belt, the Baklava here was of a rather Turkish variation. Three layers of pastry sheets sandwiching a variety of roasted nuts held together with caramel syrup crumbled with every bite. It was so eccentric that my mouth still waters writing about it. T

he first thing that must be said, when discussing the topic of steaks in Goa, is that there are steaks and then there are steaks. Put another way, not all steaks are created equal. We’ve stated this before and we’re happy to state it again. Foodies don’t eat “sizzlers”. They eat steaks. Unfortunately, great steaks in Goa are rare – and by that we are not referring to how much time the meat’s been fired. There’s still a few days left to avail oneself of the Great Steak Festival at Il Camino, the Italian restaurant at the Vivanta by Taj Fort Aguada. This, we are happy to report, is the real deal. Here the steaks are not some buffalo meat tossed on a sizzler. As the Taj’s promotion states, there are “prime cuts, choice chunks, hefty hunks, juicy T bones and saucy accompaniments.” The USP here is high quality meat, prepared with true expertise and care.

THE GREAT STEAK FESTIVAL At Il Camino (Vivanta By Taj – Fort Aguada Goa)

On one recent evening, members of the Goa Streets team sampled the Ribeye, T-Bone and Tenderloin steaks, and we’re happy to report these meaty offerings are wonderful! “The steak festival is not just about using the best of ingredients which are brought from different parts of the world and to cook it in a unique style defined by our Chef. It’s also about the innovation through which we are serving chicken chops, tofu steaks and even cottage cheese sirloins,” the restaurant states. During the steak festival, guests are given various choices to create their own plates. You choose your steak, the sauce to

go along with it, the starch and the side to accompany it. It is then paired with a COMPLIMENTARY glass of Fratelli wine. The steak festival if the brainchild of Chef Mayank Istwal, who had put on a similar festival in Sydney, Australia. Winner of India’s National Chef Competition in 2006, Chef Mayank is extraordinarily worldly, having lived and worked in many parts of India, Australia and on cruise liners throughout the Asia Pacific region. He’s in charge of Il Camino, the innovative Italian restaurant at the Vivanta by Taj Fort Aguada. He and his colleague Mayank Saxena have set out to create

something truly extraordinary at Il Camino, giving each guest a unique experience. Take how soup is served, for instance. “We wanted the guest to see the exact journey of the soup, so we got just the garnish of the soup on the bowl, and the soup on the side,” explains Saxena. “We would explain the garnish first, so as to let the guest how much effort is put in making those garnishes and then pouring the soup right in front of them to give it a personalized touch and if required grate fresh parmesan right at the table itself.” That all this is taking place on the grounds of this breathtakingly beautiful resort overlooking the Arabian Sea and the actual Fort Aguada adds to the mystique of any evening here. The team at Il Camino is wholly committed to excellence, as reflected in service, food quality, ambience and, to be sure, their steaks. On till the 23rd November, so hurry! How One Resort is Enriching the Experience of the St. Francis Xavier Exposition In Conversation With Park Hyatt Goa’s Thomas Abraham

I

t happens only once in 10 years. The exposition of the relics of St. Francis Xavier, one of the most famous figures ever to live in Goa and the co-founder of the Society of Jesus, or Jesuits. The saint’s relics will be displayed at the Se Cathedral in Old Goa from Nov. 22 to Jan. 4. It’s one of the biggest events that our state hosts, and this year it’s even more significant given that the extremely popular Pope Francis hails from the Jesuits. This year, the Park Hyatt Goa Resort & Spa has put together a Spiritual Sojourn package, catering to travellers arriving in Goa for the exposition. Below, Streets’ Shubham Gupta interviews the resort’s General Manager, Thomas Abraham, about this extraordinary initiative.

SG: How did the Spiritual Sojourn idea come about? TA: The whole idea has been boiling for quite some time. In fact, we’ve been thinking about it for the last six to seven months now. St. Francis Xavier’s relics are brought out at Se Cathedral once in 10 years. Being an event so unique, drives us to give an opportunity of living a very niche spiritual experience. SG: How did this package strike you? What about it made you keen on driving forward? TA: In my knowledge, 5 million pilgrims are going to visit the holy shrine this year. Being able to even tap 1% of that number is an interesting business figure. I don’t think that anyone is creating such an experience so to speak. While I know that the government is making immense developments in that front, I’m not so sure if there were any hotels in the past who’ve been working on something interesting. So we thought that here is an opportunity for us to tailor make an expedition that envelopes the whole history of Christianity in Goa, and something that elucidates the facts about old Goa since it is the epicentre of Christianity in the country. SG: What have been the key

strategies to maximize response? What has been the response so far? TA: The package is applicable for a short 40-day period. Some of the marketing has already started online on the Park Hyatt website, the GTDC website, the SFX website which is the St. Francis Xavier website and the Bom Basilica website. We’ll have some promo videos put up and promoted through various online platforms as well to give a virtual tour to people. At this stage, we’ve been getting a lot of queries and a few

bookings but the momentum will gradually pick up as the dates close in. SG: Are you taking support of charter agencies and online travel portals? TA: We are not tied up with any agency as such since the clientele they have has a very different purpose of visit. This package is exclusively for the ones who want to get enriched both historically and from religious stand points. As I said, it’s a unique experience and the Park Hyatt is all about delivering unique experiences. SG: Why does one need Park Hyatt to enhance their St. Francis Xavier experience? TA: Okay. Here’s some hypothetical guy who decides to have the St. Francis Xavier experience. He takes a flight to Goa, books a hotel somewhere close by, stands in a queue and waits to be enlightened. He wouldn’t know what it’s all about all by himself. On the other hand, some may have done some home work, researched on some website or if he’s strong believer, he may know more that most of the pilgrims visiting but he’ll still lack some details. In this three-day package, you check into the hotel and on the very first day, you will have a oneon-one group activity with a historian, namely, Jose Lourenco (former Editor of Goa Streets!). Being an architect by profession, Jose has written a lot of books about Goa and the churches of Goa. In this activity, he will take the guests on a virtual tour of old Goa and talk about the history of Christianity in Goa, some facts about old Goa, Q & A, et cetera. SG: What more is in store for the guests? TA: Well, on the second day, after breakfast, the guests will be taken in an air conditioned bus to the English service at Bom Basilica and thereafter to see SFX’s body at Se Cathedral. They’ll be taken to a museum and church in the vicinity. Day three is again back to Old Goa with a rather detailed expedition of all the

churches followed by a meal at Casa Sarita (the Goan-inspired restaurant at the Park Hyatt) to keep them connected to the Goan culture. SG: What sets apart Old Goa from the rest of Goa? TA: Old Goa is considered the Rome of India. There are seven different churches in Old Goa in the same area. They say when the Portuguese came in, they brought different brotherhoods with them. This displays different arteries of Catholicism that originated from Goa. SG: Is this package exclusively for Christians? TA: Of course not. It is more about the history of the place, more the religious prominence behind it. For instance, even if one is Christian or not, having to see SFX’s body buried in the 1500’s being still intact is an incredible experience in itself. It’s not about religion. It’s about living a miracle. SG: What about the curiosity of the guests as they observe details and have any queries? TA: Apart from the historian, on every tour will be 2-3 hand-picked guides who are all certified by the Archaeological Survey of India. Their in-depth knowledge of Old Goa, their experiences of Old Goa and the stories that they’ll have from their 20 years of research in Old Goa is just incredible. SG: Did you come across any such astonishing facts during your recce with the guides? TA: Very close to the Se Cathedral, there is a tiny chapel. I asked one of the guides what the significance of it was and the answer was astounding. It was the first chapel that the Portuguese had built in Goa and had their first prayer. Also, did you know that the Se Cathedral is the largest cathedral in Asia? Or that the St. Augustine church, where now there’s just the tower left, was the largest church in Asia before it collapsed? It’s interesting how I came about these facts only after visiting Old Goa.  For bookings, contact: Arossim Beach, Cansaulim, South Goa Tel: +91 832 272 1234 Emai: parkhyattgoa@hyatt.com

A film made by Goa for IFFI 2014 SCREENING THIS SATURDAY AT INOX SCREEN 4 @ 7:45 PM

T

he current subject of Portuguese citizenship and Goans asking to have the right to keep dual passports is beautifully depicted in Aftab Khan Farooqui’s English/Konkani Docu Drama PAKLO. Gauhar Khan will open the film during IFFI 2014 at Inox Screen 4, this Saturday at 7.45pm. The film, which is dedicated to Goa’s outgoing Chief Minister and India’s new Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, was made by the people of Goa and throws cinematic light on this delicate subject. The short and cleverly narrated film tells the story of a young villageraised man who wishes to leave his native India and move to Europe. His journey through the government offices of Goa and onto the streets of the world is portrayed through the colour and humour of areas in Goa that seem like the

shadow of beautiful Portugal. The film takes the face of a mind-opening documentary told through the life of this young ambitious Goan man. With culturally rich footage from both countries, it celebrates his linkage to Portugal while retaining his unbreakable bonds with India and Goa. The viewer is led through the veins of India and its largerthan-life characters, finally settling into the charming squares and coast of Portugal, where a once world-shy young man now opens the windows of his soul to the views of Europe and the rest of the world. Consider this an open invitation to everyone in Goa and to the international film community to come and see this heart-warming movie. Screening at Inox 4, this Saturday, Nov. 22, at 7.45pm. To be opened by Gauhar Khan www.facebook.com/paklomovie

The Taste of Goa is coming alive

G

oa ForGiving in association with the CCP is organising a Food, Music & Art Festival on the 9th, 10th & 11th of January 2015. “Taste of Goa” 2015 which will be held as part of the New Year 2015 celebrations. UK-based celebrity chef and TV show host Cyrus Todiwala along with a team of 4 acclaimed British chefs will present Goan and International cuisine. The three day event will also feature traditional Goan folklore, dance, music and showcase sights, sounds and flavors of Goa. A press conference was held last Tuesday to discuss the same at the Gonsalves Mansion. The conference was addressed by Armando Gonsalves, Chairman Goa ForGiving Trust; Liz Gracias, Festival Director; Francisco Martins, Goa’s Entertainment King and Chef Vasco Alvares, owner of the famous “Vashquit”. Speaking to the press Mr. Armando said “it is a good thing that it is a bad year for tourism, for a simple reason that this gives Goa an opportunity of changing the axis on which tourism rests”. He also said that a large number of restaurants will be participating who will be coming up with their own specialty menu for the three days. Goa’s Entertainment king, Mr. Francisco Martins spoke on the set up of the Festival which will be designed by him. He said it will be somewhat like the set up at the samba square which takes place during Carnival, but this will be more related to food. Speaking on the Chefs’ Forum, Vasco Alvares owner of the famous “Vashquit” food joint said, “ with the 5 celebrity chefs coming down to showcase their local cuisine, it will give an opportunity to our Goan chefs to present to them our Goan cuisine as well. It will be a good platform for Goa to promote its local Cuisine as this festival will be marketed at an International level”. Also speaking on the Chefs’ Forum, Mr. Armando said that it we encourage the Goan housewives too, to come forward and learn the tricks of the trade, and maybe teach the International culinary artists some things of Goan food as well.
