he use of music for healing purposes goes way back, to the sixties, for instance, in a ritual called Tarantism in the southeast Italian region of Salento. It is based on the principle of bio energy, where bodily stress creates a psychophysical imbalance which is then harmonized by a specific type of music with a consistent frenzied rhythm. “The rhythm of Salento is also called Pizzica, which was this rhythmic music played by live musicians and the dance that follows these rhythms, thus allowing

Salento, a big area in the Puglia region of Italy, is the origin of Transalento. “When in London at the age of 20, I fell in love with the dijeridoo,” says Andrea, as his story of passion unfolds, including a journey to Australia in 1998 to learn more about this aboriginal instrument and its allied culture. Transalento have just released their 5th music album in Goa this March 7th titled, Kali Mirch, as in black chili. A new-age styled band, Tranalento has Andrea as it founder and leader and often takes on different musicians at various times. Right now they are a trio. Kavita Soni from Mumbai is on vocals and also dances Hindustani classical moves to Transalento grooves. And then there’s fusion guitar magic by our very own Elvis Lobo. While the first album Bunda in 2005 and the next called Natural Trance in 2007 were predominantly acoustic sounds, later albums had effects processors and electronic gadgets on board. Andreas plays the dij (short form for dijeridoo) and the facebase, which is the electronic version of this very aboriginal instrument. “While in Salento, I played traditional music for many years, with Transalento. Then I had many musicians of different styles performing in big and small festivals around Italy and India. Music & Nightlife  5 Eventually, I started to get involved in social rights and then began to write lyrics of protest, love, devotion, and to preserve human and land rights. Slowly I also learnt how to create with laptop and fx machines and began to like the mix of real instruments with electronic. The music then started to get different colours.” So Transalento today is a worldfusion musical journey, mixing Indian spiritual chants and original compositions with Dub, funk, hip hop, contemporary dance music, the ancient voice of didjeridoo, Mediterranean songs and fusion guitar magic. The band never fails to inspire dance, “in a Among great music maestros, Transalento has jammed with world famous contemporary music composer Ludovico Einaudi, the Taranta Orchestra on an Italian and European tour, the Cora african master Ballakè Sissoko, Dulces Pontes, Justin Adams, and Goatika creative lab. Their music is in a 12” vinyl single track production with Gaudi whom Andrea worked with when in London. Apart from these, there were musicians from UK, Russia, Switzerland, Ibiza, Delhi, Mumbai, Australia, Qatar, Portugal, Goa, among others.

ritualistic atmosphere of liberation,” as its online description suggests. After Andrea returned from learning about didjeridoos and aboriginal culture, living with aboriginal communities and tribes, making didjeridoos, listening to the stories of the elders, listening to nature, imitating the sound of animals, learning new chants and other such indulgences, in 2002, Transalento was born. “Transalento’s specialty is to put together different styles and musical languages, and enhancing the power of groove with ethnic melodies. The music gets inspired from all sorts of tribal minorities around the world who try to keep their identity as ‘people of the land’, not contributing to global destruction in any way. Somehow the tribes are always in danger, wherever they exist. But they too have rights like all of us,” Andrea says. Andrea first came to India in 2004. His desire to fuse traditional harmonies of India and Salento brought up a collaboration called INDO PIZZICA with Bengali Singer Sonali Chakraborty a few years later. “I am now looking forward to research musical roots of tribals from Goa, before indulging in a fusion here as well,” he says, as he’s been around in Goa and playing gigs here since 2007. It’s a privilege and an honour to have Transalento grace these shores. 

8 Extremely Dirty Places in Your House And some tips for keeping them clean Kitchen sponges They keep your dishes clean, but sponges themselves are one of the biggest germ magnets in your home. Not exactly self-evident! Be sure to clean them by rinsing them under hot water after every use, washing them thoroughly with soap (or in a dishwasher) and replacing them often. Remote Controls The problem with the remotes is that everybody touches them, including people with grimy germ-infested hands. Usually, there’s serious bacteria buildup there. Wipe ‘em down with disinfecting wipes or a soapy damp towel on a daily basis. Cutting boards Cutting boards are another notorious magnet for unwanted germs. If you’re preparing a

big meal, try to use separate cutting boards for vegetables, meat and poultry, or at the very least wash them thoroughly after each individual

job to avoid cross contamination. Toothbrush Holders Toothbrushes keep your teeth clean, but they can wreak bacterial havoc wherever they are stored. Clean your container (and toothbrushes) by running them under hot water for a minute, and it’s better if you use a little soap.

Doorknobs Ironically, sometimes the stuff we use the most are cleaned the least. Doorknobs are breeding grounds for germs, especially during cold and flu season. Disinfect them with a powerful cleaner or, for a quick all-natural solution, spray them with vinegar. Bath Towels Bath towels are also well-known germ collectors. Damp towels, especially, collect bacteria that can make you sick. Make sure to put your towels out to dry, in the sun if possible, after every use. And swap them out often. Faucet Handles We touch these things all the time, often when our hands are at their dirtiest. It’s important to wipe down these faucets, especially the bathroom ones, with a strong multi-use cleaner. If you prefer an all-natural solution, combine a quart of water with several tablespoons of baking soda. Pet Beds You don’t have to be a genius to see the amount of germs your cute little puppy exposes himself to. Surprise, surprise! He takes those germs to bed. So when it comes time to do the laundry, it’s a good idea to wash Pooch’s bed cover at least once a week (if you have one that’s washable). If not, vacuum them well and disinfect them with sanitizing, odor-cutting spray. 

How Lovin g M Their Child oms & Dads Unk nowingly T ren Into M urn aterialistic Adults

I

t’s not unusual for parents to reward their kids by giving them gifts. But new research suggests this practice risks turning them into materialistic grown-

ups. Giving gifts to reward good behaviour apparently teaches kids to define success in terms of material possessions, according to a new study published by the U.S.-based Journal of Consumer Research. The study’s authors say a message is sent that a person’s self-worth is centred around the accumulation of material goods. For the study, Dr. Lan Chaplin of the University of Illinois at Chicago and her collaborators at the University of Missouri surveyed 700 adults, asking myriad questions about their lives, relationships with parents and the punishments and rewards they received as children. The researchers found that adults who had been rewarded with toys and other presents as children tended to reward themselves with material items later in life, and also tended to define their self-worth through possessions. Notably, they were also more likely to judge others based on their material possessions. So now that we know that gifts to reward behaviour are a no-no, what should we doing instead?

Chaplin suggests rewarding the young ones with time and attention. So when your son or daughter does something good or helps out around the house, flash a big smile, give a hug and engage is some fun activities or play. When the kids are rewarded with attention and positive feedback, they also learn that doing nice things makes other people (including their parents!) happy. This is not a new debate, of course. Many parents see financial rewards as harmless, and there are many ways to reward good behaviour and punish undesirable behaviour. Psychologists mostly agree, however, that “extrinsic” rewards like gifts or money are less effective and can have negative results. Among the negative consequences found is reduced motivation for performing helpful tasks for their own sake. There’s also a danger that a person will simply return to undesired behaviour when no reward is attached, and that he or she will never learn to understand why being “good” is worthwhile to begin with. 

Socialist lawmaker Olivier Veran, who is also a physician, is seeking to amend an upcoming health bill to outlaw the hiring of models suffering from an eating disorder. Modeling agencies would have to submit a medical report showing that their hires have maintained a healthy mass-to-height ratio. Great-Grandma Celebrates 100th Birthday By Skydiving And Taking A Swim... With Sharks

es, you read right. She jumped out of a plane at age 100. Now get this. She went sky diving for the first time only eight years ago, when she was 92! A few days after her 100th birthday jump, Ms. Harwood got into an underwater cage off the coast of South Africa and mingled with sharks. “I’m so glad I did it!” she declared. Let’s just say Georgina Harwood has an adventurous spirit. After her tandem jump, the South African described the experience to the Associated Press as "wonderful" and "exhilarating." According to media reports, 15 of Harwood's family members and friends joined her on the jump. Congratulations, Georgina, for turning 100 and for knowing how to live life! 

F

or all the Goan locals who are looking for a perfect lunch hangout and for all the visitors craving for some truly authentic Goan culinary experiences, I am going to share with you a discovery that will rock your palate. In the bustle of Panjim city rests a cute little coastal food restaurant called

Suwadik. As the name suggests, it’s all about the traditional Goan flavours and old school preparations making every flavour taste its best (or at least taste the way it’s supposed to). Talk of Goan food or coastal food and the first thing that pops into our heads is seafood, isn’t it? And well, you’ll find the menu at Suwadik replete with freshly caught fishes and prawns in several Goan

preparations like rava fry, masala fry, butter garlic, curry, and of course, ambotik. However, it’s not just seafood. It can’t be. To site an example, the first thing that I tried at this restaurant was an appetiser called ‘Komdeche Sukkem’ which is a dry preparation of chicken cooked in an array of Goan spices. To be honest, I was blown away by its soothingly spicy, sweet, and slightly sour masala made with onion, garlic, tomatoes, and Goan spices sautéed to an aromatic perfection. Topped with a bunch of cilantro leaves and a tiny slice of lemon, the start of this coastal culinary experience could not have been any better. Next up was the all time lunch favourite, namely, Fish Thali which is also one of the most popular specialities in Suwadik’s menu. The Thali included a zesty prawn curry, dry bhaji, Tonnak, tisryo, two types of fried fishes, solkadi, chapatti, salad, and assorted pickle. Now that’s what I call lunch! The prawn curry had a very strong coastal touch with flavours like mustard, coconut, and curry leaves dominating the curry while the tiny little shrimps dunked in the curry brought in an element of surprise. Apart from the sweet and spicy flavour of the curry, it was rather healthy with just the right amount of oil. Fishes on the other hand, namely lemon fish(modso) and black pomfret were marvellously fried to a perfect golden brown. Let me give you a little advice here. It might sound gross but this thali will taste much more spectacular if you dig out the contents and hog them with your bare fingers. Believe it or not, this massive thali with generous portions

will only set you down with INR 150/-. You must be wondering that a lunch place in the city with such completive prices must be sort of tacky. Well, this place may be small but is fully air conditioned with chic beige interiors and furniture. The walls are covered in replicas of black and white doodle artwork originally by Mario Miranda while the music they play is from a mix bag of pop, retro, rock & roll, and old school commercial hits. One thing that I’ll always regret is not being able to try any desert since the thali itself filled me up to the throat. With sweet dishes like bebinca, dodol, kharvas, caramel custard and so on, it is sealed that I’m going there for lunch very soon. Till then, if you do visit this

restaurant for lunch or for dinner, be sure to make use of the comments section on our website to share your feedback. Taste: 9/10 Portions: 8/10 Service: 8/10 Ambience: 7/10 Cost for two: INR 500-700/-

Happy New Year To All!

I

By Goa Streets

f you’re thinking about starting a new business or relationship, perhaps making an important purchase or investment, or any other major life decision, this might be a good time to take the plunge. After all, we are now celebrating Gudi Padwa, the the Hindu New Year. Gudi Padwa is the name for the new year used in Goa and other parts of India, but not the entire country. There are many things that can be said about this holiday, but perhaps none is more significant than the auspicious timing it gives to all those eager for a new venture in life.

Believers say this is the day Goa created the entire universe. This year, the festival falls on March 21 (it falls on a different day on the Gregorian calendar every year, since that calendar is not exactly the same as the Hindu calendar.) It’s important to remember that the Hindu New Year is not celebrated like the western New Year. No fancy parties or drinking into the night or clubbing in glamorous venues (or at least not much of it!). Gudi Padwa is a low-key harvesting festival, unlike the exuberant Holi or the glamorous Diwali. It marks the end of one agricultural harvest (the end of the Rabi crop) and the beginning of a new one. Instead of stars and flashing lights, what you will see outside most Hindu homes in Goa and neighbouring states is a pole sticking out of the window with a brightly-coloured silk-cloth-covered tumbler at its free end, decked in flowers. By the Hindu lunar calendar, the happy day is the first day of the bright phase of the moon (i.e., the day after a new moon of the first month, Chaitra). The following nine days and nights (or Navratra) are also auspicious – a good time to get married or open a new business or begin a master’s degree in Hindu mythology. Neighbouring states celebrate it as Ugadi (Andhra, Karnataka) and in Konkani, it’s also called Sansaar Padwo. Other names for it include Navreh, Cheti Chand and Bihu. In offices around the country, women employees will wear yellow. Astrologically, the sun is supposed to be in the first point of Aries. This is considered to be the beginning of spring (the Vasant Ritu). People of ancient Egypt knew

this and Nowruz, literally “New Day”, is celebrated as the Persian New Year. Indian Parsis celebrat Nowruz around this time of year. The Gudi Padwa pole-out-the-window is perhaps the holiday’s most recognizable symbol. A silk/brocade cloth flutters over an upside down tumbler at the tip. For company, it has some sugar crystals, neem and mango leaves, and a garland of red flowers. The inverted tumbler or pot might be of silver or copper or steel, but always metal. The whole contraption has to be noticed by neighbours and passers-by, hence it’s hoisted as high as possible. Early on Gudi Padwa morning, courtyards in village houses will be swept clean and plastered with fresh cow-dung. In cities, people do some spring cleaning. Women and children work on intricate rangoli designs on their doorsteps, the vibrant colours mirroring the burst of colour associated with spring. Everyone dresses up in new clothes and it is a time for family gatherings. Like all Hindu festivals, the social aspect is every bit as important as the religious one. Traditionally, a Gudi Padwa feast includes shrikhand (a sweet made of hung curd) and Poori (a fried bread). Goans love Kanangachi Kheer, a dessert made of sweet potato, coconut milk, jaggery, and rice flour. This is a time of joy, of hope and of new beginnings. It may not have the glitter and flash of other holidays, but when it comes to depth of meaning and renewal of the mind and spirit, Gudi Padwa’s hard to beat. To Hindu and non-Hindu alike, we wish everyone a joyful New Year – and a Happy Gudi Padwa! 

14   Heard on the Streets

Science Made Fun

The Pleasurable, Scientific Journey of Deepak Pathania quest, which gave me breadth and a wide vision. But as 2012 turned into 2013, I began to understand that for me it was time to stop excelling in lots and lots of things, and instead to focus on reaching the pinnacle of just one.

The older we get, and more experience we obtain, the more difficult it becomes at times to stumble upon something truly new. That makes the journey of Deepak Pathania all the more compelling. His science-made-fun YouTube videos and upcoming travelling science fairs – India’s first – are groundbreaking endeavors with the potential to enrich our lives. To all of you with kids out there, this is especially important reading. As part of “Heard on the Streets” – a citizen’s journalism initiative by Goa Streets – we invited Deepak to tell us about his life, his stunning, innovative projects, and his decision to move to Goa. Read on!

I

By Deepak Pathania

am a compulsive hands-on inventor/problem solver, having graduated as an Industrial Designer from NID, Ahmedabad. I shifted to Mumbai for work in 1995 and founded a multidisciplinary design studio, Design Intervention, in 1998. Mumbai in the late 90s was a booming market and if you had talent, you could pretty much get any project you wanted, and I wanted it all. Over the years, our boutique design firm won many honors and awards across disciplines, ranging from Promax gold in animation, prizes for exhibition stalls, for retail, sets for national networks, Sunburn stage designs (2011) and a even a national award in the form of FIRST PRIZE for the tableau design at the REPUBLIC DAY PARADE (2012). In 2007 I became a creative consultant for the TV show MAD on POGO, and since 2009 created original content for Science/ Innovation shows (FAQ, BrainCafe, EngineerThis) for

mainstream TV channels. I have worked on 700+ presentations as varied as developing mono-wheel motorcycles, amphibious vehicles, vacuum powered climbing equipment and even 30-feettall trebuchets (medieval war engines with slings for hurling missiles). In 2012, my wife Carol and I decided to escape Mumbai and move to Goa, shifting our creative office here as well. Goa because it was close enough to Mumbai and also a great place to raise our two sons, Moksh, 8, and Vardaan, 5. In 2012, I got some time to think things through. I had been thoroughly enjoying my “working” life but I longed for greater focus – a core competency, if you will. It was New Year’s Eve, Dec 31, 2012, when I engaged in several hours of deep introspection. I looked back on my journey since 1995, starting from my school days. I always wanted to try out new things and ended up doing a great many of them. Not for a moment do I regret my multi-disciplinary

As I introspected into the night, I had a plan. Developing science content for presentation is tough, and the scale that we work with is also unprecedented (certainly in India, but sometimes in the world as well). As we began working on these projects, everything seemed to fall into place – guided and nurtured by cross-discipline fertilization. My design education combined with a decade plus of multidisciplinary hands-on experience put me in the company of a select few on the planet. Through it all, the one thing that I loved most was innovation and being in the workshop. What was my plan? What was my core competency? I conferred with Amit, my brother, partner and director of operations, and we decided that the answer was to find focus AND do what we loved. The answer was to produce Fun Science Content as new verticals that can evolve into independent brands. After a year of backend work, in July 2014 we launched D’Art of Science www. dartofscience.com, a Science Website, along with a YouTube channel. India has numerous fun science and DIY content developers for online

consumption, and all concentrate only on the science/tech, but not on the presentation. Because we had the experience of developing content for all the science TV shows, including sets and exhibitions, it was eminently doable for us. The past journey started to make sense in the cosmic plan. The videos are being designed with a multi-layered strategy. Not only can these videos be used for edutainment for kids, but teachers can use them in class. They have the option of keeping the volume off and explaining the presentation the way they want. We release one video per week, but have the capacity to release one every day. Our next brand is the country’s first traveling Science Fair, to be released in New Delhi in July and thereafter in two more metro cities this year. Every year we will introduce new content and travel to five cities. Indian science fairs generally have more or less the same standard content, workshops for kids and food stalls for parents. We are planning to add to all that, experiences that are unheard of, even in international fairs. The information will be up on the website soon so stay tuned! Through all this, my plan is to remain in the thick of it in the workshop making things that feed the content development for the verticals. The eventual dream prototype workshop in Goa will evolve as a handson innovation hub for co-creative and collaborative projects as well. Goa IS the best place for that. Unlike other science/DIY content developers in India, we are building a brand that can grow to any scale, and we are committed to making things that not only work scientifically, but also look great. Our aim and USP as D’Art of Science is to provide great content using Indian ingenuity backed by industrial design capability, using international standards of presentation. And, through it all, I personally host/anchor everything and hope to become the Fun Science Guy of the sub-continent. The journey has just begun.  To see D’Art of Science’s videos, log onto www.dartofscience.com. You can also see video examples by logging onto www.goastreets.com and clicking on the “Science Made Fun” story.

A Goan Opposition? It’s been a long time since the state’s had a real one. Could the G-6 be it? By Crespo D’Souza

W

ith the Goan Congress Party missing in action, its fortunes felled by years of misconduct and abysmal performance, it seemed for a long time Goa would simply have to make do without a credible opposition. Now a group of legislators has stepped in to fill the void. With “Goan issues” being the keywords bringing the legislators together, the G-6, as they are sometimes called, believes their collective voice will have greater credibility than each of them crying hoarse at different frequencies. The legislators - Michael Lobo, Vishnu Wagh, Vijai Sardesai, Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenço, Naresh Sawal, and Rohan Khaunte – believe they can find common ground and take on the government jointly. To be sure, it’s hard to identify specific issues the group is tackling together. But we may see pet projects of individuals get support from others in the group. Take Porvorim independent MLA Rohan Khaunte’s opposition to casinos, for instance, or Calangute MLA Michael Lobo’s diatribes against growing drug peddling and prostitution in the coastal belt. Vijai Sardesai and Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenço are speaking out against the Hindu nationalists whose voices are growing increasingly strident under the current leadership of BJP Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar. All six legislators believe the government is not doing enough to raise employment and attract investment in the state. One area, however, where they decidedly do not oppose the government is the decision to renew iron-ore mining in the state (this is a

highly pro-business opposition group). “We are a young group of MLAs and that is what unites us together. There is a generation gap between us and the older guys,” said Vishnu Wagh, the legislator from San André just South of Panjim. He said that their coming together wasn’t official and neither was it

something being done in hiding. “There is nothing to hide. We do have a common policy on the issues we would like to take up,” Wagh added. Whether the group actually performs remains to be seen in the upcoming session of the Goa Legislative Assembly, but the forming of the group is seen as significant.

“Faced with falling political fortunes, these young and restless representatives want to ensure that they are looked upon well in the eyes of the public by opposing a government whose popularity is on the wane,” said a politician who didn’t wish to be named. No sooner was former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar upgraded to Union Defence Minister, when the rumblings among the legislators of the Goa BJP grew louder, with Michael Lobo the loudest of them all. Rohan Khaunte began issuing ultimatums to the government over a whole range of issues, from law and order to casinos in the River Mandovi, making no bones about how poorly the State was being run and even threatening to “reconsider” his support for the government. Reginaldo and Sardesai are known critics of the government and disillusioned by the lacklustre opposition of which they are a part. The question remains whether this grouping will actually have an impact in the state. It’s clear it raises the volume, even if not so much the number, of Goa’s opposition voices. A strong opposition can wake a complacent government from its autopilot mode. But will the grouping last till the next general election scheduled in 2017? Not everyone thinks so. “No sooner will the political climate change, each legislator will rechart his own course of action in a bid to stay afloat in an extremely turbulent environment,” one politician said. The budget session of the assembly begins next week, and it will be the new chief minister’s first session. At least now there’ll be someone to give him a run for his money. 

Saying ‘No’ To Intolerance, Fear and Communal Strife

Views From the Tiatr World Rays of Light Shining Thro ugh By Ron Fidelis

Dark Clouds

Signs of intolerance and growing extremism are everywhere these days in Goa and throughout India. But if you talk to the folks active in Goa’s Tiatr community, you will find unmistakable rays of light. Below, writer Ron Fidelis brings you views from the Tiatr World of Goans.

I

f we do not choose the religion that we get born into, how can anyone belittle another person for her religion? If a non-Hindu brother or friend decides not to stop eating beef despite the rise of Hindu nationalism, will a Goan’s attitude towards this countryman change? “My logic does not allow me to agree to this,” says tiatrist Premanand Sangodkar. This resounding “No” is a common refrain among Goan tiatrists who believe nothing will break the brotherhood between the various religious communities in Goa. “I do not believe Goans subscribe to views dividing people on communal lines,” chips in Sandeep Ambe, popularly known as Comedian Ambe. “In India, there will never really be a place where there will be only Hindus. People from other religions will always also be there. And in Goa, we Goans rent our houses to just about everyone just based on humanity. Goa has so many outsiders, tourists, who come here. We accept them all.” Tiatrists in Goa are a unique breed. As

entertainers, they tend to be open-minded and openhearted. Through their dramas, they are used to touching both the better and darker angels of their audience. True, they’re not beyond ribald humour and satire that deflates the powerful. But most share a belief that the common bonds of humanity are stronger than that which separates us. Talking to them about the topic of growing intolerance in Goa and India in this period of rising Hindu nationalism, they spoke of the need for cool heads and harmony among creeds. “The recent spate of communal statements made with regards to Mother Teresa, this whole ghar-wapsi issue from certain extremists will end up bringing together the Catholic community whose sentiments will be hurt and this will be only justified. But are these things worth it, given the hate that is involved?” asks Sangodkar. “I think these Hindu extremists have not understood the cultural background of Goa ... I see no need to impose gharwapsi after four hundred years of already being converted. Bringing it up now again serves no purpose apart from spreading communal hatred while

imposing one’s religious opinions on another,” says the septuagenarian. “You see the gap between those my age and the present generation is already about 30 years. The new generation is expected to go beyond these divisions of religion; not get divided on its lines instead.” Alarm recently spread in Goa’s Tiatr community after the state government proposed a “censor board” to police Tiatr and Marathi dramas in the state. To many, the move seemed part of a generalized trend of growing intolerance – in line with the BJP sweep taking place across India. Hindu Tiatrists seem particularly perplexed by these movements to sew communal discord. Perhaps it’s because many of them are used to reaching out across religious lines. “Most of my friends are Catholics” is a common statement they make when discussing this topic. “However much some may try to defame Mother Theresa, try ghar-wapsi or any other way of dividing us, they will never succeed in Goa because the relationship between the Hindus, Muslims and Catholics in Goa is very different. I celebrate Diwali with my non-Hindu friends here. Communities celebrate festivals of each other. It’s different here,” explains famous Tiatrist Premanand Lotlikar.

“Even right now as I speak with you I am having two good Muslim friends of mine at my house,” he added. How can one stop another from living his own life, choosing her own diet or worshipping in the prayer house of his choice? they ask themselves. “Each one of us has a role to play in this world. We still don’t know where we come from, or where we will go after we die. We just have to live these lives and pass away and play our role in between,” says Tiatrist Pradip Naik. “And this is applicable to everyone, irrespective of being Hindu, Catholic or Muslim, as we are all one.” Some 400 Tiatrists recently petitioned the state government to scrap the proposal to set up a Tiatr censor board. They have not yet received any assurances. What is clear, however, is that this community, comprised of all of Goa’s religions, is emerging as a solid voice of tolerance in the state. 

On My Own (O.M.O) Celebrates 20th Anniversary Goa Store Flourishing in Tonca and Mumbai Store Reopens

From the time of its launch in Bandra, Mumbai, 20 years ago, On My Own or O.M.O. has enjoyed cult status for urban women in India, including TV presenters, celebrities and executives seeking elegant women’s wear with Indian motifs. In Goa, the store in Toncahas quickly gained prominence as a top favourite for Goan residents as well as tourists from metro cities, who know and love the label. Driving into Taleigao, it’s hard to miss the pretty white bungalow with the vibrant blue sign on the right side of the road. Inside, the store encompasses four sprawling rooms that tastefully display distinctive collections of women’s wear, accessories, home décor, gifts and there’s more added all the time. The Mumbai store recently reopened its doors in the quaint Chimbai village area, at a site thatwas well known for hosting the ‘Yoga House’ previously. Both the stores are a visual treat with neat and colourful racks of women’s garments calling out to be mixed and matched with the variety of innovative accessories available. This aspect of encouraging women to mix and match to create their own look is one of the strong suits of the O.M.O. label, and one that has led to its phenomenal success. And with the mantra of providing affordable fashion, creator of the brand and curator of all the fabric and accessories

ArtiShantakumar, makes it possible for her customers to look unique everyday.“When we create clothes, we choose textures and colors that make you look special. We always try to ensure that you can put together your own ensemble in a way that suits you and you alone,” Arti says, speaking of her approach. With an ever-changing collection of uncommon clothes, necklaces, earrings, scarves, and sarees, any lady shopper will tell you it’s hard to leave the store without buying something. The mix of Western and Indian wear are made largely from natural and hand loom fabrics, sometimes using vegetable dyes and block prints. And Arti is always happy to feature innovative collections that are also natural and socially responsible like herbal cosmetics by Pure Herbs, attractive gift products by the NGO Akankshaand chic home accessories by ‘Salva Terra’, in both Mumbai and Goa. Additionally, the delightful children’s wear brand ‘Almirah’ is prominently featured in the Mumbai store. One can see why news of the O.M.O. store reopening in Mumbai elicited excited comments from fans on their Facebook page. As Sampada Chaudhari put it, “It’s my favourite location. It couldn’t be a better place and a better brand than O.M.O.” Others ask if there are plans to open stores in their cities. With collections that are delectably curated and an adoring fan base, O.M.O. is looking forward to their next 20 years.
