The Man Who Wrote the Lusofonia Theme Song

By Andrea Fernandes

Viva Lusofonia’, the theme song for the international games Goa hosted last month, is almost as worldly as the sports event itself. Moving seamlessly between Portuguese, Goan and Indian tones and beats, it’s an extremely fitting tribute to the games that brought together Portugal and its former colonies and earned Goa wide praise for hosting them successfully. And who is the man who composed this wondrous melody? None other than our own Mukesh Ghatwal, one of Goa's most promising talents when it comes to making magic on the keyboard. He was born and brought up in St. Estevam in

ashion is simply an extension of your creative god, says Ethel Da Costa, judge of the Fashion Guru and Mega Model 2014 which unfolds at Bottle Bay, every Saturday. `Fashion fades, but style is eternal’, said one of my favourite designers, Coco Chanel. Yes, seconded by my style icons Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Madonna, Sophie Loren and Angelina Jolie epitomizing just what I have been saying and writing for almost 20 long years. That style is not about who you wear, but how you wear, what you wear. While money can buy you labels, it most certainly does not

Mukesh Ghatwal performing at the Heritage Jazz Festival

From page 3

North Goa. Music director, arranger, programmer and composer, he has mixed and recorded many beautiful pieces, won many awards and made quite a splash on the local, national and international music scene. His father Madhav Ghatwal was a teacher of the harmonium, a pump organ, at the Kala Academy. Is it any wonder that Mukesh, too, fell in love with music? His father was into Classical, though Mukesh always tilted toward Western and more modern genres. Before starting his own recording studio, he spent years moving from band to band. “Music is something for everyone living and has emotions. Sometimes music can express much more than spoken words”, says the 36-year-old Mukesh. Mukesh is a cool, calm and understanding person who doesn’t care much for musical imitation. He’s an original, and prefers original music. Mukesh has arranged and composed albums in Hindi, Marathi, English and Konkani. His pieces include Laraham, Shree Gajantakshmi, Sai Daivat Mojem, Mahan Mojo Des, Peheli Nazar, Sundor Goem, Bore Christavem, Jezu Bogos Maka and Mariola. He’s performed with Remo Fernandes and represented Goa in ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Band Special’ for Zee TV,

held at Delhi in 2000. He composed the music for 26th Jan floats representing Goa at Delhi in the 2012, bagging 2nd prize. Mukesh studied audio engineering at the ‘SAE Technology College’ and theory of music at the Trinity College of London. He’s noticed some positive changes of late when it comes to music in Goa. “The future of music in Goa is bright and this can be noticed from the fact that previously for any function or event people used to play recorded music and now prefer to have a new composition done for that particular event.” Case in point: Lusofonia 2014. Mukesh’s “ Viva Lusofonia” was quite a hit during the games, incorporating three separate styles with a distinctive Goan tilt. Mukesh plays over a dozen instruments, the main ones being keyboard and base. His other instruments are synthesizer, violin, tabla, ghumott, drums, keyboard, harmonium, guitars, flute, recorder, dholak, drums, harmonica and mandolin. Mukesh has judged band and singing competitions and dance choreography for different events at places such as Dempo College, Goa Medical College, All Goa, Maharastra & Karnataka ‘Battle of Bands’, ‘Kingfisher Voice of Goa’, ‘Mirch Sound Check’ By Radio Mirch, singing and dance competitions

Music & Nightlife  7 A fashion designer receiving applause for her work

From page 3 buy you personality. The one thumb rule of fashion: Reinvention, and your own seal of creativity. Have it, flaunt it, life moves on as the clouds float across the universe. So, when Ninil D’Souza, restaurateur and owner of Bottle Bay, approached me with his idea, I smiled…Encouraging talent, providing platforms for creative expression - whether art or music - fashion simply finds me in different avatars. So, we decided to start out with fashion institutes in Goa. Unfortunately, for all the fashion talent in the state, so few fashion institutes actually take the business of fashion seriously. One thing’s for sure. The only government-run fashion establishment at Altinho could use an infusion of proper funding, facilities and faculty that encourage creativity. When we came up with the Fashion Guru and Mega Model contest, we decided to keep the format simple. After all, this was about encouraging talent. It struck a chord, and the registrations came pouring in. The event is unfolding Saturday after Saturday, till the Grand Finale on April 5. After the sheaving and the chaffing the lesser for the Most Best, we will have our final Fashion Guru and our Mega Model for Goa. A career would perhaps be created as a launch pad for new talent and jump-start a life-long passion. We can only sincerely hope. Who made it through post auditions for the KINGFISHER ULTRA FASHION GURU 2014: Harold Andrade, Lakeisha Palha, Nasim Yalgar, Pinky Prajapat, Sparsha Deshpande, Sudha Vishwakarma, Anushka Rodrigues, Neha Masurkar, Amna Sarpal, Rutuja Ghavi, Mr. Trevor Pinto, Natasha Zotova And the ROCKLAND DARK MEGA MODEL 2014 contestants: Azra Da Costa, Belita D’Costa , Edwina Zora Cardozo, Mayanka Pereira, Myra Da Costa, Tanvi Pai (akaTracy), Zahara Powell, Schanel Da Costa, Flexcia D'Souza, Kezaia Caldeira , Isha Hiroji

The event is supported by a Starcast Judging Jury comprising the `Who’s Who’ of the fashion and media industry, namely Hemant Sud, Syne, Archana & Sumeet Bhobe, Rita Mody Joshi, Monty Sally, Zhenya Marenych, Kabir Makhija, Hema Nagvenkar, Khushi Dawda, Kateryna Sadomovska and Dawn Mortimer. On March 1 we will have our Top 10 participants, in both design and model categories, post an on-going audience poll and online votes on www.bottlebay.net. Thereafter, each of the Top 10 designers will create garments to themes on each Saturday, modeled by the Top 10 model contestants from March 8th-29th. The entire glamour gala will culminate on April 5 with a headline act by Celebrity Designer Ramesh Dembla from Bangalore, where the winner of the Fashion Guru and Mega Model will be announced. I know where I’m going to be seen these Saturdays. At Bottle Bay. Are you? See you there. 

8  The Lowdown

The Lowdown At the end of the day, top architecture and design come down to taste. And in the case of the projects showcased in this issue of Goa Streets, very good taste. We’re talking luxury villas, infinity pools, well-appointed resorts, cutting-edge design, and serene views of expansive fields and the open sea. These are not run-of-the-mill projects. Some of them are extraordinary for the way they blend in so seamlessly with the style of Goa. Others for their modern take on traditional elements. Still others, for the comforts and conveniences they provide. And yet, they all have one thing in common: a commitment on the part of their creators to true excellence. We hope you enjoy reading about these lovely properties – resorts, hotels, villas and other divine spaces – that are helping put Goa on the world map for chic, interesting, sustainable and highly creative architecture and design. On these pages, we also give you the true word about pollution in Goa, and the news isn’t good. You may think the air we breathe here is pristine - and perhaps compared to some other parts of India it is – but Goa’s air is actually surprisingly polluted, due mostly to the ubiquitous burning of garbage. Speaking of serious topics, we’d like to draw your attention to Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello’s piece on the alarming incidence of child sexual abuse in Goa. In this issue, we also tell you about some very special projects put on by people who are committed to making our world a better place. The young men and women at the Goa Institute of Management recently staged a flash mob on the Dona Paula jetty (the same venue as the Goa Streets flash mob in November 2012!) as part of the One Billion Rising activities in support of women’s safety. You can also read about Goa For Giving’s The Power of Love activity and the love they’re giving to the sick, the orphaned and the elderly. Also, don’t forget to check out our story on the 10 scariest crimes in Indian history. The idea isn’t to scare anyone – just to give everyone a bit of an education and an update on where some of these notorious bad guys are now. In case you didn’t already know, Goa Streets’ print edition is just one part of our venture. The other big part of our project can be seen on www.goastreets. com. We’ll see you there!

BOMBAY DARBAR

Gateway to Gastronomical Heaven Mughlai-Style By Ananda Krishna

A

re you too tired to make dinner? Are you in the mood for takeaway? How about EXCELLENT take-away? Bombay Darbar is a take-away joint that opened less than a month ago in Santa Cruz, in the Panjim area – and it’s safe to say it’s one of the best take-away joints anywhere in Goa. It is located in Sairam Residency, surrounded by a quiet neighbourhood and in just less than a month Bombay Darbar is already stirring ripples. They have catered to a wedding for over a hundred people and are open every day of the week except for Fridays, when they do just dinners. Bombay Darbar is definitely worth checking out right away. All you have to do is reach for your phone and dial for a delicious Mughlai meal. Bombay Darbar does delivery within a fourkilometer radius so if you stay in Bambolim, Merces , Filomina Housing Society or Rich Builders Paradise, you are truly lucky! And the food’s good enough to make a special trip even if you don’t live in the area. Bombay Darbar is the brainchild of Farhan Sayed and Sayed Anwar. Farhan did a two-year diploma course in hotel management from Stephen College in Goa. After which he worked with the Marriott in Bombay. Sayed Anwar, Farhan’s Uncle, looks after the marketing of Bombay Darbar and also runs it when Farhan is away running his family business of interior designs. The seed of this dream was sown a long time back at Nagpada, in Mumbai. As a child, Farhan has very vivid memories of the bustling streets and delicious food served on the streets. The calling came back during his own wedding, when guests were so impressed with the Mughlai food Farhan arranged for them that he decided it was time to provide similar fare to the people of his native Goa. Dilshad, Sayed Anwar’s wife, told me that everybody especially loved the kulfi (dessert) at the wedding, and the same version is now available at Bombay Darbar. Amazingly it took them just one and a half months from ground zero to take off with their plan. The place was

a whiff of it is enough to get you going. Finally, I had the Lucknowi Seekh Kebab and thank God or I should say thank the wonderful team of chefs in Bombay Darbar. These guys have come down from Bombay where they were working with Delhi Darbar. This kebab is divine. It melts in your mouth when it’s hot and take that literally! It’s got cheese in it. I finally finished my meal by licking off my Malai Kulfi, easily one of my favourites. Farhan’s philosophy is simple; “We love to eat” and he tells me this with a wonderfully warm smile on his face. He carries on saying, he’d like to have a chain of Bombay Darbars and one day have a hotel. I won’t be surprised when this does happen because Farhan and his team have got all the ingredients to put the cherry on the cake. “The Chicken Clear Soup and Cream Tikka is good”, says Aneesh Lawande, who has brought his friend Avinash Pujari to try out some of the wonderful inaugurated on the 26th of January when guests, friends and family were invited for the launch. More than three hundred people turned up for a delicious meal of Chicken Achari, Chicken Biryani, Lucknowi Seekh Kebab, to mention a few from the list. It was the very same things that I tried when I went to Bombay Darbar; a meal consisting of Chicken Biryani, Chicken Achari, Lucknowi Seekh Kebab and Malai Kulfi. The meal was wonderful. The Chicken Biryani smelled delicious with beautiful long thin rice grains. I was so happy it wasn’t greasy like so many other biryanis. As I sank my teeth into the Chicken Achari my taste buds were overwhelmed with the rich and subtle flavours of Mughlai food. One of the highlights of this dish is its fragrance, just

food at Bombay Darbar. They are Goans who tell me they are happy to have found a new place that makes Mughlai food, which is so different from the food they have got bored with. Bombay Darbar also serves up some mighty fine Chinese fare and if you have an adventurous spirit, you could try out their Chicken China Town that’s got dry fruits stuffed in it. They shut by eleven so do make up your mind before that! The other day, we at Goa Streets decided to order our lunch from Bombay Darbar (even though we’re located all the way in Sangolda!) With all the running around we do here, it’s not too often we all sit down together for a meal at the table. Well, that’s what good food does. It brings everyone together.  • The Food: Mughlai, Chinese, Indian • The Ambience: It’s a take-away joint! • The USP: Unusually tasty food • Contact: +91 832 4458877 / 2458588

shray Real Estate Developers is a prestigious real estate company offering luxurious residential properties in exotic locations in Goa. They have been into the construction business since 1995. A hallmark of their many projects is that every one has been thoughtfully planned and designed by Goa’s leading professional architects and backed by equally competent civil engineers and contractors. The Ashray projects are headed by Mr. Girish Ragha. The architect for most of their projects is Mrs. Ashwini Ragha, Girish’s extremely talented wife. They are a reliable, customer friendly team that have gained a reputation among clients for being an ethics and value driven organization, with an ability to conceptualize ideal plans for development of top residential projects that can be easily absorbed into the market. They do not settle for anything less than the most modern and the best, be it in construction, fittings or features. Ashray started operations with the aim of providing modernity, functionality and luxury in every square foot of construction. They believe in a constant process of modernization and implementation of technology in their construction methods. The builders consistently strive to serve customer satisfaction, meeting various market challenges and developing projects in sync with changing scenarios. Ashray Real Estate Developers is the epitome of innovation and success in the realty space and strives to set a new benchmark with each new project.

Latest technologies, ethical business values and an uncompromising attitude towards quality are helping them outperform other realty players. It is these core values that have earned them instant approval among higher end buyers as well as investors. However, it is their customer friendly business policies which sets them apart from their peers. Some of their current well-known real estate projects include Frangipanni, Nyassa & Belvederre. 'FRANGIPANNI' is a project consisting of ten Bali styled villas in a blissful setting in the village of Anjuna designed for a lifestyle of pure indulgence. The luxurious villas blend with the traditional Balinese atmosphere with all the contemporary amenities and comforts. A swimming pool surrounded by a lush tropical garden, and fully furnished, richly decorated interiors and

tasteful accents come standard at these villas. Each villa has four bedrooms and is equipped with staff quarters and large living areas opening out into the pool and immaculately landscaped gardens. The villas have been designed with attention to every last detail, using materials and finishes that allow the residents to get up close and personal with nature. And if the craving for the sun and the sea sets in, one is just a five-minute drive away from Anjuna and Baga beach. ‘NYASSA’, which means lake or divinity, is a project consisting of two contemporary styled ultra luxury villas being constructed on individual plots at Siolim, touching the Chapora river. Both the villas enjoy breathtaking views from their upper and lower decks. The beautiful Morjim beach and the popular Anjuna beach are close by, though it’s not clear you’ll be able to pull yourself away from enjoying the views from the villa and of course the little Gazebos spread over the garden. ‘BELVEDERRE’, made up of nine fourbedroom villas and three apartments, is located in the scenic village of Pilerne. It is the perfect place to live and relish and experience tranquility in your own private paradise. Designed to look like a typical Portuguese styled villa, you can enjoy the view of the pool sitting in the balcao of your villa or savour the

breathtaking view of the green fields as far as the eye can see, as you barbeque on the deck outside your dining room. And if you feel like some sea and sand, the Candolim beach is just a ten-minute drive away. Some of their other well known completed projects are: Aquamarinne, set in an idyllic location on the banks of the Nerul river, boasts a beautiful view of verdant hills in the background. This project has 3 luxurious riverside villas, where one can go boating or if you are not that adventurous, just take a dip in the beautiful swimming pool. Symphonny comprises 28 single and double bedroom apartments and is situated in the hinterlands of Chapora, Goa. With a rooftop pool and deck that overlooks the Chapora river and fort, the apartments also enjoy the view of beautifully landscaped gardens and a lush valley. Tranquille is located walking distance from the famous Vagator beach. The project consists of compact but stylishly designed single & double bedroom apartments (ideal for holiday homes) set in a single building with a large lobby space. A swimming pool & a well landscaped forecourt complete the setting. Their forthcoming projects are exclusive bungalows in Nerul. Stay tuned! 

THE DELTIN DREAMWORKS

T

he Deltin Group has created two new stunning properties-Deltin Palms and Deltin Suites - which reflect the original flavour and traditions of Goan architecture. The first, which is the flagship hotel for the Group, has been in operation since 2011 and is a beautiful boutique styled venue that has been built on the banks of the Mandovi River, overlooking Old Goa and the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. It has been completely constructed with red laterite stone and the facades resemble an authentic and charming Portuguese house. There are twenty-seven villas in total and most of

them have the lovely view of the river. It is also equipped with its own private jetty to enable its guests to hire feeders and boats for cruise outings, plus get dropped off at the Casinos directly without going through the hassle of passing through the road traffic. The Deltin Suites, on the other hand, which opened its doors in 2012, has preserved and renovated a 300 year old Portuguese house which they then converted into a hotel reception and lobby. Inside, there are one hundred and six beautifully designed contemporary rooms, which also include 2 penthouses

overlooking the beautiful hills of Saipem and Candolim Village. In addition, the property features numerous elements of the local unique architecture together with several displays of interesting artifacts, reflecting the local workmanship. Both the properties are unique because of their locations as they have the dual advantage of being located near the busy tourist places of North Goa but are, thankfully, sufficiently far away to provide a respite from the hustle and bustle of the noisy streets. Deltin Palms is located near the historic Britoona church which provides a very soothing and peaceful ambience whilst Deltin Suites, is comfortably nestled between the Candolim and Coco Beach, as well as the historic Reis Magos Fort, making it an ideal spot for fans of local history. The cuisine in both establisments is highly rated and soon Deltin Suites will be opening a 24x7 restaurant, which will serve international cuisine along with lounge style entertainment. So come one, come all! ď Ž

By Bina Datwani

S

ublime, surreal and serene are the words that jump into your mind the second you cross the threshold of Shanti Morada (translation: Peace at Home), an extremely elegant new boutique hotel in Goa. Nestled in the Eden-like village of Saligao, this property has already won the ‘Best Boutique Resort’ award in Goa by NDTV and Brands Academy - no small feat considering it hasn’t

even had its first birthday yet. Its six-year old sister concern in Delhi has also earned several awards including TripAdvisor’s ‘Best Small Hotel’ and ‘Best Service in India’, as well as NDTV and Brands Academy’s ‘Best Boutique Hotel in Delhi’. The charming owners, Rajat and Sanjana Verma, had a vision of restoring the century-old Indo-Portuguese home to its former glory. They did their utmost to ‘enhance the authentic architectural nuances’ of the property.

Some examples of their attention to detail in this heavenly abode are original tiles that were remade in Spain, wrought iron grills - discovered during excavation - redone in Belgaum and ancient pillars and archways that have been recreated especially for the resort. The old foundation cross from the 1897 house was also found and this now takes its pride of place on a pedestal within the property. The Vermas chose not to cut the lay of the land so as not to disrupt the landscape and so, painstakingly, built along the angle of the hill. Shanti Morada, from concept to inception to completion, has been true to the landscape and heritage of Goa. The resort’s architecture and design are quintessentially Goan, flowing seamlessly with local traditions rather than against them.

Each of the 20 uniquely named rooms (Indus, Ganga, Cinnamon, Bombay Masala) is bears the theme and fragrance of their name, their large bay windows overlooking Goa’s only Ozone pool - crystal clear water sans chemicals where you can float your worries away. A trendy Jacuzzi bar, with immersed bar stools, is ideal for intimate sundowners. The ornate dining venue set in a candle-lit gazebo, the Lantern, serves delicious tandoor food exclusively to in-house guests. The bathrooms complete the feeling of paradise on earth, with exquisite copper claw foot bathtubs and walk-in rain showers… Bliss. Heritage pieces greet you inside the resort and have been handpicked by the owners; art by iconic artists, sparkling chandeliers, antique clocks and furniture, including a 300-year old intricately carved bed flown in from Macau. After the visual feast and satiation of taste buds, it’s time for tranquillity to envelop your soul at the Mandala, where rejuvenating yoga sessions and soothing massages await you amid a garden setting. But in case you’re in the mood to just chill out, there are several cosy lounges sprinkled all around the property that are ideal for switching to the lazy mode. There’s Boat Lounge with its maritime theme, the Cue that’s equipped with a pool table, Shiva Lounge that stocks smoking pipes and even a lounge on the roof which would be perfect for meditation. Shanti Morada has obviously been a labour of love for the Vermas and that’s why they attract a discerning clientele, the kind who appreciate the finer things in life. Shanti Morada provides the truly world famous traditional hospitality that India is famous for. Peace. For further information, visit the website www.shantimorada.com. ndia is a land of extremes. And so it stands to reason that our crimes, too, can be particularly harrowing. Here’s a list of some of the worst crimes we’ve seen in recent memory in India, presented in no particular order of gravity or importance. 1: The Nirbhaya Rape Case The gang rape of the girl ‘Nirbhaya’ in Delhi in 2012 stirred up the entire nation, shining a spotlight on the issue of violence against women. Nirbhaya died from her wounds inflicted on that fateful night when she was brutally gang raped aboard a bus, her insides destroyed with an iron rod. But considering the impact her case has made on our misogynistic society, hopefully for the better, it appears her death was not in vain. And the culprits have now been given the death sentence.

2: 26/11 Mumbai Attack The attacks 26/11 have also made an indelible mark on the national psyche. And many in Mumbai still suffer from devastating flashbacks. It was a Tuesday, 5 years ago when a group of 10 Pakistani terrorists turned Mumbai into a war zone, staging a series of attacks at fivestar hotels and other venues around the city. The attacks began on 26th November, 2008 and lasted four days, killing over 166 people and injuring at least 300. Ajmal Kasab, the man who led the mission, was finally hanged last November. 3: Noida Double Murder Case On the night of 15-16 May, 2008,

14-year-old Aarushi Talwar and 45-yearold Hemraj, a domestic helper employed by her family, were murdered at Aarushi’s home in Noida. This was a huge whodunit story throughout India. When Aarushi’s body was discovered, Hemraj emerged as the main suspect, until his own murdered body was discovered on the terrace a day later. The ensuing investigation pointed the blame at Aarushi’s parents – Dr. Dr. Rajesh Talwar and Nupur Talwar – and subsequently on other of the family’s employees. The case made the rounds through various bureaucratic entities, with a great deal of intrigue, mutual recriminations and intense media coverage, and last November the parents were sentenced to life in prison. They are challenging the decision in the Allahabad High Court. It appears the mystery has yet to be solved. 4 The Shakira Khalili Murder Case It was 20 years ago when Shakira Khalili, the beautiful granddaughter of the former Dewan of the princely state of Mysore, left her husband and four kids to marry the sham Swami Shraddhananda. It took investigators 14 years to discover her dead body buried in the backyard of her Richmond Road house in Bangalore. The swami was convicted of the crime and is still serving his time after he received a death sentence nine years ago. Shakira’s daughter Sabah said she believed her mother was buried alive,

considering that the bones of one of her hands were curled up around a mattress as they dug her up.

5 Nithari Case of Noida This case involves businessman Moninder Singh Pandher and his servant who lived in Nithari. Between 2005 and 2006, many children from Nithari village went missing. Residents eventually discovered the decomposed bodies of 15 children in a drainage tank behind a white house that belonged to Pandher. The Nithari residents suspected that Pandher and his servant had something to do with it but the case went nowhere. When the CBI took over the case, they found that Pandher would force his servant Surender Koli to kidnap these children, after which they would torture and cut the children to bits. Both culprits were eventually given the death sentence, as the case was classified as ‘rarest of rare.’ However, Pandher was acquitted by the Allahabad High Court in 2009, though he still faces trial on several other counts. Koli’s death sentence has been upheld. 6 Somnath Parida chopped his wife into 300 pieces Somnath Parida, 72, was a retired doctor who lived with his wife Ushashree 62 in Orissa. They had been married for 42 years, their children were well settled abroad and they had a relatively good life together, although people did mention that the old man had a short temper. One day last year Ushashree went missing. Soon, relatives got a whiff of ‘a decomposing body stench.’ Authorities

8 The Psycho Raman Case One of the most deadly serial killers has got to be madman Raman Raghav, who committed some of the most horrendous murders in Mumbai in the 1960s. Raghav killed over 30 people between 1965 and 1968, including his own sister who he raped and stabbed several times. He was arrested after a girl called Krithika identified this strange man killing a victim on the outskirts of town. On arresting him, police found that he suffered from schizophrenia.

9 The Suryanelli Rape Case This case involves a 16-year-old girl who was raped by a number of different men for 40 days in 1996. The girl was originally from Suryanelli village in Kerala. She was coerced into eloping with her lover, who disappeared during the journey. A woman and an advocate approached her, and the lawyer ended up taking her to a lodge where he raped her. The pair dragged her around Kerala and Tamil Nadu, where she was repeatedly raped by several men, including a number of highly influential ones. A total of 35 people were sentenced to prison for involvement in the case in 2000, but another court acquitted them all five years later, claiming the sex was consensual. However, the Delhi bus gang rape in 2012 shed a new spotlight on the case, and the acquittals were overturned last year. At one point the victim accused Congress minister PJ Kurien after spotting him on TV but the charges against him didn’t stick. The 2006 movie Achanurangatha Veedu was in part based on the Suryanelli case. 10 Umesh – The Ripper Murder Case This serial rapist was actually once a police constable till his warped sexual fantasies got the better of him. Between 1996 and 2006 he did terrible things to women, including raping a military commander’s daughter, and raping, robbing and murdering some 20 women in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat. This cop turned serial rapist deserved a death sentence and got one in 2006. 

R

aghu Shetiya is a man who wears many hats… effortlessly. From property development to supplying timber to an online taxi service, this Goenkar has come a long way, a far cry from the young man who started out as a real estate broker in 1997 and used to unload trucks at night. Today, he has built residential complexes, set up a useful transportation business and launched Goa’s first fashion calendar (Aatmaa). The construction projects include Goldbeam Residency, located in Santa Cruz and comprising of twenty-four apartments. This was undertaken with two partners, Rajesh Salgaonkar and Sameer Kakodkar, after which clients began to appreciate his work. The next housing initiative is Immaculate Gardens, in Mapusa, which has fifteen villas and twenty-five apartments and estimates to be ready for occupancy by March this year. “But I wish the Government would set up a governing body so as to avoid malpractices in the real estate sector; too many people have been duped by forged documents and unclear title proofs”.

Last August, Mr Shetiya came up with TaxiGo, an online taxi service (dial 671-1111), which he hopes will provide efficient and reasonably priced cabs to both locals and tourists alike. It offers pick-up and drop off to the airport and railway stations, plus sightseeing tours within and outside of Goa. Under the umbrella of his Chandan Group, Raghu’s vision is to make Panjim a ‘no traffic zone’, replacing cars and bikes with buggies. His other selfless endeavour is WHY (We Help You), an NGO he set up in May 2008. It has already assisted in various disaster relief operations – providing medicines to the Uttarkhand Relief Fund, donations to the affected victims of Canacona- in addition to helping the poor and needy by giving out clothes and books. The future seems very bright for the enterprising Raghu Shetiya. 

Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello, a psychologist and frequent contributor to Goa Streets, checks out the ground reality of this alarming phenomenon in her informative chats with experts from diverse fields.

T

here has been a rapid surge in child sexual abuse in India over the past several years. A total of 8,541 cases of child rape have been reported in India during 2012 as compared to 7,112 in 2011, indicating an increase of 20 percent. National Crimes Record Bureau statistics have also revealed a disturbing trend; 48,338 child rape cases from 2001 to 2011 with a 336 percent increase of child rape cases from 2001 to 2011. Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest number with 9,465 cases. Though these cases don’t often come to public attention in Goa, it’s clear child sex trafficking in Goa is prevalent, especially involving young boys, who are usually children of the migrant class. According to an estimate by Child Relief and You (CRY), over 10,000 paedophiles visit Goa every year. Another assessment by Children’s Rights in Goa says that at any given point there are at least 100 paedophiles on the prowl in Goa. According to field data collected by national and international child rights organisations, a paedophile in Goa sexually exploits at least 20 children during his or her visit.

Less than a month back, a 31-year-old man raped his Iranian girlfriend’s 4-yearold daughter while they were vacationing in Goa. In the Vasco rape case, where a 7-year-old girl was raped in the school toilet last year, arrests are yet to be made. One recent press investigation reported an inefficient police probe after which the CBI was handed over this sensitive case. Dr. Ravindra Agrawal (consultant psychiatrist at Salgaoncar Hospital, Vasco and Manipal Hospital, Dona Paula) says, “Though child sexual abuse has occurred in the past, it is being increasingly reported due to greater awareness and access to help. At the same time, it is indeed increasing due to the changing nature of our social fabric.” There are laws to fight the crimes of sexual predators. The Goa Children’s Act protects children from abuse, sexual offences, child trafficking, child prostitution and violations of their rights against exploitation. But serious legal and governance loopholes plague the system. Parents voice security concerns about sending their children to schools due to lack of surveillance. Anxiety and fears for their children loom large. Security measures in schools need to be urgently

addressed. Selma Rebello (Navelim), a concerned parent of a young daughter remarks, “All schools should have CCTV systems, have reliable security manning all entry and exit points, checking of IDs as any offender could pose as a parent to gain access to school premises, a well functioning parent-teacher association, added responsibility handed to class teachers, orientation for parents, teachers and students to educate them.” Victims are not only girls. A 13 year old migrant boy was kidnapped and sexually assaulted near the old Margao railway station last year. In yet another case, a 10-year-old boy was sexually assaulted by three inmates of a juvenile delinquent home in Merces in 2012. Often, the perpetrator is known to the victim. “At times, children could be sexually exploited by maids, house-help, babysitters, relatives, and neighbours,” comments Dr. Agrawal. Kavita Borker, psychologist and Head of Psychology Department, Chowgule College (Margao) says, “I have come across cases of sexual abuse in which the father is the perpetrator. It is very shocking and disturbing. The child has no security in his/her own house. It is an extremely traumatic situation for the young child. The situation is compounded when the victim has nobody to turn to, not even the mother!” “The risk of harm to children is further magnified when family issues such as marital discord, alcohol and drug addiction of father, unemployment, mental illness or history of abuse are prevalent,” rues Dr. Agrawal.

Last year, local dailies flashed shocking news that child sex was being offered for Rs 50 on Goan beaches. Last year, a paedophile was arrested for molesting four minor girls from Margao over several months. The existance of child sex tourism reflects the lacunae in our legal and judiciary system. The Freddy Peats case, a German who had abused many children in 1980s, was sentenced to life imprisonment. A report commissioned by the British Government in 2001 showed the extent of paedophilic activity in Goa, half of which are related to British men, in 31 case histories. Most victims are migrant children from neigbouring states. The exposure of the paedophilic ring in Mapusa in 2003 showed that sexual predators could be locals too. Mrs. Borker continues, “Children are easy targets for sexual offenders due to their vulnerability. Abuse could take different forms: overt or covert abuse, physical or mental or both.” “Unfortunately, any form of child abuse has a detrimental effect on the victim. The effects could be long lasting or relatively of shorter duration depending on the child’s age, extent of social support, and type of abuse,” says Mrs. Borker. Purva Kamat, behavioural therapist at Sethu opines, “Sexually abused children are wary of strangers and find it extremely difficult to form close bond with people.” Dr. Agrawal explains, “Greater awareness among parents and children themselves (e.g. educating them about good touch vs. bad touch), alcohol and drug de-addiction, supervision of children, background check of all employees who will be working with children, expedient and strict law enforcement, swift justice are some preventive measures.” Children’s Rights in Goa (CRG), Porvorim has been working towards empowering children, making them aware of their rights, and providing them with information about how they can protect themselves from abuse. Psychosocial support is provided to child victims of abuse. CRG has conducted various productive activities - inspecting children’s homes, drafting child protection policies for child care organizations and schools, setting up village child committees, carrying out workshops and training programmes targeting teachers, police, government employees, panchayats, among other projects. What does it really mean to be a sexually abused child? It’s almost too painful to even fathom. This is about the loss of human dignity, and the unspeakable violation of the most vulnerable members of society. All of us must be aware of what’s happening, and be prepared to act against it. _____ For more information on sexual exploitation of children in Goa and what you can do to help, log onto www. childrightsgoa.org

F

ebruary 14th, is generally made out to be a day of love celebrated between lovers and couples. But, we at GoaForgiving celebrated “The Power of Love” in our own special way at Mother Teresa’s Home in Panjim. We chose to spend our Sunday with the elderly, the sick and the orphaned, celebrating through song, dance and music, thus marking it as the Weekend of Love!

People from across Goa, including all the Political parties were invited to join us in spreading love, to which the AAP responded. AAP members included Dr. Oscar Rebelo, Joe Gomes, Arturo D’souza, Miki Naik and others held a Jhadu Chalao Yatra (Sweeping Rally) from the Gonsalves Mansion up till Mother Teresa’s with the idea of sweeping our souls and working towards the betterment of our country. The Revving Peace Makers (RPM- Goa) a biking club which was launched on the 14th of February, whose mission is to make peace with a disturbed planet and all its inhabitants, also joined us by riding to the Home with a message to spread love. The charming Hamara school children sang a few songs like “God’s love is so wonderful”, “Love is something that you give it away” and others for the elderly. Varun Carvalho too strummed a few songs for

them, thus bringing a smile to their faces. Students of Dr. Martins Dance Academy were also a part of our programme. AAP members distributed Red Roses to all the people gathered, which were later on presented to the inmates as a sign of love. The inmates were very happy and delighted to receive them, which was significant through the bright smiles on their faces. Through our humble work Goa ForGiving wishes to enthuse our other friends in Goa and beyond to reach out to old age homes, hospitals, orphanages and the other less fortunate sections of

society to spread the message of love through their words and deeds even beyond the 14th of February. There are so many people who are bereft of love, spending some time with them and showing your love to them is what they look forward to. “LOVE” is all you need to show towards the ones who need it the most, and possibly the only thing that could make this World a better place to live in! Goa ForGiving sends out a message to everyone this Love season, “SPREAD LOVE WHEREVER AND WHENEVER YOU CAN!”

T

he Grand Hyatt Goa, a contemporary resort and spa is built in the architectural style of a 17th century Indo-Portuguese baroque palace and located on the calm and inviting waters of Bambolim Bay. Its amenities include a grand ballroomwhich offers the largest banquet facilities in Goa and are spread over 12,400 sq ft (1,150 sq m), perfect for grand weddings, social events, conferences, and small and large meetings. This elegant Grand Ballroom is decorated with KaalaKhata marble imported all the way from Israel. The decorative molding on the ceiling border and sides of the walls and the gold leaf ceiling design are inspired by IndoPortuguese architecture. Obviously, the Hotel is the ideal destination for individuals who wish to host a distinctive Indian wedding. The jharokha (covered

terrace) is strategically located above the banquet entrance to give the bride and groom a traditional royal entrance with petals or confetti being bestowed upon them. The artistic woodwork around the jharokha is a traditional intricate design done in dark toned Burma teak. The interiors of the resort and rooms include a display of pictures of village scenes of Goa, art that pictorially depicts the hues and colours of the sunset, sea and favouritemotiffs in traditional ceramic tiles. The tiling employed is in Tarazzo style which is a unique system used in ancient India. This is similar to mosaic tiles but are rectangular in shape. The beautiful Capiz shell also features prominently inside the resort. The opaque flat shell also known as mother of pearl, is commonly associated with Goa and plays a significant role in Goan Portuguese architectural designs. Outside, in the stunning lotus garden in the main palace clock area, one can find huge trees of Frangipani with a big

sculptural formation of lotuses that almost resemble a formation of a flock of birds. The garden is soothing and brings the outdoors into the building area. The Capiz Bar and The Veranda, which are two of the many dining options, have strings of capiz shells hanging from the ceiling to create a beautiful curtain and add an element of casual chic to the ambience. Approximately 10,000 Capiz shells have been used in the restaurant and 20,000 pieces have been used in the Spa. The Shaman Spa houses 19 treatment suites that include six couple suites and two Royal suites. These are designed as sanctuaries and offer hydrothermal facilities with a sunken bath, vitality pool and multisensory rain showers. The spa also houses a 25meter indoor lap pool and a 1,300 sq ft (120 sq m) lifestyle studio designed to host group and individual sessions of yoga and aerobics. An outdoor free form swimming pool is the perfect feature for guests to be able to relax and enjoy the sea breeze and soak in the Goan sunshine.ď Ž
