I

n the battle of the two EDM music festivals, Sunburn v/s Supersonic, guess who won? The music fan!

Never before has Goa – or India - seen such an amazing line-up of world class DJ’s showcasing some of the finest electronic dance music in the world, right here in Candolim and Vagator.

It was the seventh Sunburn in Goa, and naturally it was bigger than Supersonic – which took its first baby steps to loud applause. With the two festivals clashing over the venue in Candolim, Sunburn finally opted for a vaster, bigger venue in Vagator, ending up with what was undoubtedly the biggest and most impressive Sunburn ever, with the festival spread over 500,000 square metres of land up on the Vagator plateau, with fantastic views of the sea and a fairyland-like atmosphere.

What made Sunburn 2013 a phenomenal success was also the devotion and loyalty of their fans, who have been religiously coming for the Sunburn festivals in Goa every December. The number swelled to 30,000 festival-goers every day for three days (a conservative estimate), wildly cheering every single track played by every single DJ. Besides the music, the whole festival venue had a carnival-like atmosphere with a giant wheel, food courts and even a bungee jumping crane where you could go up in a cage-like contraption and dive down on a bungee rope for that near-death experience – for only Rs 2,500.

likely to stay loyal to Supersonic when it comes around again next year. On the last day of Supersonic on December 30, the place was packed with over 15,000 fans grooving to every track by the time the fest came to an end.

Goa truly is now the capital of electronic dance music festivals in India, if not Asia, taking its renown as the party capital of India to a completely new level.

It was an unforgettable experience for the thousands of music fans who had come from all over the country – Sunburn pointed out they had visitors from 36 countries. It was an incredible line-up of DJ’s from all over the world, with Grammy winners and top-of-the-charts superstars like Afrojack, Benny Benassi, Axwell, Tristan, Pete Tong, Mark Schulz and dozens of others dishing out their stuff to salivating fans.

Of course, some of the sets were better than the other sets. On a critical note, many of the sets sounded like each other,

with the DJ’s playing popular chartbusters. Sunburn’s sound systems were truly world-class. And considering that Supersonic was put together in only 21 days (something festival curator Nikhil Chinapa repeated often!), the sound and production at Supersonic were also quite impressive. Of course, with so many stages all blasting music all the time, the low notes on any particular stage were at times inaudible in all that cacophony.

One of the highlights, and easily the best set at Supersonic, was on Saturday night, day 3, when Ferry Corsten played a mind-blowing two-and-a-half-hour classic dance set infusing the music with sounds from the different eras of dance music. Over at Sunburn, the last day’s closing set by Axwell was the best ever set at any of the Sunburns, according to many.

Fans could sample different genres of dance music by going round to the various stages at the two festivals, three

at Supersonic, and six at Sunburn. The main stage at Sunburn was called Dance Temple, and featured a huge pop image of the dance avatar of Shiva, Nataraj. Clearly, a nod to the Goa trance scene which flourishes in Vagator. The other stages were called Cubezoid – which had the more experimental music, Space Station and Space Jungle – which both had music for the space heads, and Bass Machine and Flutter Bug. Over at Supersonic, they had three stages, Sub Sonica, Laboratoire and Spectrum.

Some of the more notable artistes who performed include Above & Beyond, Booka Shade, Richard Durand, Johnny Deep, Mark Knight, Albin Meyers, and many other top-ranked DJ’s in the world.

It was also all a bit overwhelming for the fans. Dhruv, a 19-year-old student from Mumbai came for Supersonic because the tickets were a little more affordable than at Sunburn. “Man, I bought a VIP pass for Rs 9,500, but it’s only for entry,” he wailed, saying that he had to dish out more for drinks but that he was thoroughly enjoying himself nontheless. After the shows got over at 10 pm, he also made it a point to go for one or the other ‘after-party’, with the VIP ticket getting him free entry. By the last day of the fest, it was happy hours at Supersonic – you bought one drink and got one free!

For the DJ’s, too, Goa was a discovery.

“This is the first time I am here and I am really happy,” Grammy-winning music producer and DJ Benny Benassi said after his set at Supersonic, adding, “Goa is crazy and I love the food and happy that I am finally tasting Indian food.”

It was the organizers of the two electronic dance music festivals, though, who were the most thrilled with the festivals, considering, for example, that a single day’s ticket to Sunburn cost Rs 6,000. Multiply that by around 20,000 or 30,000 and you will know why Shailendra and Harinder, the brothers who run Percept, will be grinning for the rest of the year.

“It’s all thanks to the fans,” Shailendra said in his blog on the last day of Sunburn. “Dedicated, fanatical, infinitely energetic. Everything has been of the fans, by the fans, for the fans. A festival is made by the fans that live it and love it and celebrate it, and there were a lot of fans living, loving and dancing at Sunburn Goa 2013. From the very beginning we had said that it would be the biggest and the best ever. And it was. Beyond all our imaginations.”

Says Jaideep Singh, one of the organizers of Supersonic, “Our debut journey has been sheer magic. Next year, we promise to bring in a whole new dimension to the festival.”

It’s going to be a long wait of 365 days, but it’s going to be worth it. 

AD HOC GUARDIAN ANGELS Discovery of a rare breed of selfless souls

O

k, so most of you have had an overdose of the mushy sentimentality that accompanies the Christmas season and were looking forward to the usual quirky and interesting articles that is this paper’s calling card; well, tough. For what better way to start the new year than by giving thanks for all the things that went right last year and expressing gratitude to all those who made it possible. That way, you won’t have to work so hard to fool Santa this year into believing that you’ve been nice and not at all naughty!

To begin my story, let’s rewind a tad.

On a random day in early 2013, at exactly 5:30 am, I sat watching slate grey clouds throwing a steady drizzle of gentle rain down onto the pista green fields from my sleeper cubicle on the Volvo bus; the only key ingredient missing from this

cosy scene was a cup of steaming hot chai. Suddenly, the title song from the Bollywood film ‘Bombay to Goa’ popped into my head for I was making identical tracks, hoping for a better quality of life by adopting the Goan formula of Sussegad. Fast forward to present day, one is happy to report success, the credit of which goes to the locals, who are the common thread of my ramblings today; a salute to some of the people that saved me from ending up in a padded cell with a straitjacket.

Yours truly relocated to a new home a few months ago, which means I’ve felt like slitting my wrists at least twice a day since then. Fortunately or unfortunately, I was flying solo when moving, so it was the working class (plumbers, electricians et al) that bore the brunt of my tantrums.

Victim No 1 was Sanjay the carpenter.

Here, despite the fact that his dad was seriously ill in hospital, he donned the good Samaritan hat and arrived at mi casa. Why? Because, as he explained, the desperation in my voice had struck a chord. Going above and beyond, Sanjay dragged an electrician along - no mean feat - and then patiently walked around the house examining its challenges and gently recommending remedies.

Definitely a keeper.

Next on the gold star list is Sunita, my housekeeper, who has balanced on precarious window ledges to keep my place clean and who once asked me if she could fix me something to eat because I looked shattered. And then there’s my friend Peter, who rescued my house from sinking a la Titanic by bullying a plumber to show up, calling every half hour to ensure the job was getting done.

My list of random acts of kindness includes the Delfino supermarket guy who suggested I try a cheaper version of port wine which he thought tasted better than the more expensive variety; the owner of Hometown, who cheerfully provided the name of his competitor for a product he didn’t carry; the manager of my ex-housing complex, who would wake up early on Sunday - even though it was his only day off- to deliver fresh warm pois.

Obviously, there are a lot more lessons to be learnt about the art of “give and not take”; I hope we all develop the sense to open our hearts and minds at the right moments. And to absorb these unselfish Goan qualities via air, food and drink!

The Lowdown If you’re like many people, you may have been slightly perplexed when you found out Goa was hosting not one but two Electronic Dance Music festivals at the very same time. As if one weren’t enough! And yet both Sunburn and Supersonic took place amid great fanfare, and as our story in this edition points out, the real winners were the fans. We took the Daft Punk lyric for our headline ‘Lose Yourself to Dance,’ and that’s exactly what tens of thousands of Goans and visitors to Goa did last week. A great time was had.

n one way, at least, it’s a bit of a shame the food, service and ambience at Go With The Flow are as good as they are. We joked that perhaps the restaurant decided on its name because if any of the above were lacking (food, service or ambience), they could just tell the disgruntled customer, “Go With The Flow!”

Unfortunately for the joke but fortunately for us and all other diners, there was no call for disgruntlement and no need to go with any untoward flows!

Chef Guto and his team are turning out Brazilian, Mediterranean and fusion cuisine that is tasty, innovative and inspired. particular location on the ample grounds not because we really wanted to but because there were children in our party who thought it was damn cool. They were not wrong and we were not unhappy with the choice (though the platform does vibrate at times).

Now, the food. The menu is not extensive (a good thing for high-end dining), and everything on it is prepared with great care.

For starters, we went for the Prawn Salad on a bed of sashimi of fresh salmon and chips of Parma Ham. Great! Next came the Roast Beef in a crust of Indian spices thinly sliced with a fresh rucola salad and cherry tomatoes.

Another winner!

The main courses we sampled were: • Beef Steak from the grill, in a thyme, mustard and cognac butter, Saffron puree and fresh salad • Beef Na Pedra, Slices of beef, to BBQ yourself on a hot stone at the table, with fries, salad and pepper sauce • Filet of Fish, with soya sauce, fresh curry leafs, ginger and chilly cooked in a papillotte in the oven, on top of pine apple Carpaccio served with coconut rice with

crisp of zucchini • Pork in Confit, prepared in a traditional French style, glazed with a sweet & sour sauce, apple puree and Momos filled with truffle

For dessert, check out the Gateau au Chocolat. And of course, there are also lovely cocktails served in a very appealing outdoor bar.

If you feel a bit of Déjà vu while dining at Go With The Flow, it might be because it’s owned by the same folks who brought you the former restaurant Samovar in Anjuna.

And yes, like Samovar, proceeds from Go With The Flow go to the charitable Samarpan Foundation (www.samarpanfoundation.org).

Don’t let these frauds dupe you, or worse

ndia has always had seers and sadhus of every kind, spiritual leaders with legions of devoted followers and enough advice to fill a Bible, or Bhagavad Gita. No doubt, there are sincere human beings among them. Yet we’ve also had swamis who have raped, murdered, assaulted, burgled and engaged in paedophilia and many other crimes.

With the advent of the tourist season in Goa, along with visitors come the self-styled ‘godmen’, often targeting unsuspecting foreigners, who in hopes of obtaining spiritual nirvana instead end up getting hoodwinked in the worst way. Be wary of men in white and saffron, and all those whose charisma and gift-of-gab may seem a bit too polished. Let’s hear some real-life stories from Goa, in hopes that their experiences will prevent similar misfortune from these false purveyors of fortune.

Alisa and Eva, university students from the U.S., came on their first visit to Goa. A week into their holiday, they met up with a middle-aged man, with shoulder length hair, clad in saffron clothes, at a shack. He introduced himself as Gopal, a Yoga guru, and asked if they were interested. Though they had no plans to learn yoga, they saw it as an opportunity they shouldn’t miss and agreed.

For three days, Gopal came to their room at a private guest house at 6 am and put them through breathing exercises. On the fourth day, he suggested they go to the beach and do yoga in the rays of the rising sun. ‘Breath deep, close your eyes, soak in the rays, abandon every thought, and experience the

moment,’ he told them and left saying he had to attend to other students.

They went for lunch, and when they opened their satchel, they found their wallets with all their money missing.

Fortunately, their passports and cash were in a locked suitcase.

Returning to their room, they explained what happened to the lady who ran the guesthouse. ‘That man came to ask for the keys, said you wanted your suntan lotion,’ she told them.

That night at around 10:30, there was a knock on their door. Eva opened it and found two well-dressed guys, who asked if they could come in.

‘Who are you?’

‘Gopal sent us to spend the night with you.’

Eva asked them to get out, but they tried to force their way in, saying they’d paid him a thousand bucks each for

a good time. She pushed past them, and ran down the passage shouting for help. The owner of the guest house and others gathered about, and the men reluctantly left.

Needless to say, the girls were looking for seats on the first flight back. ______ An elderly British couple who had holidayed in Goa for five years were walking on the beach when they were approached from the opposition direction by young man clad in a white sarong, a long scarf over his shoulder, vermillion smeared on his forehead, who they figured was a ‘swamy’. He smiled, wished them, and asked if they were Ian and Celina Buckley from the UK. They were surprised a stranger knew their names. ‘I am guru Ramashree and Satya Sai Baba has sent me to take you

to his ashram in Bangalore.’

They’d heard of this Baba, and were intrigued and asked how he knew them.

“Baba had a vision; you are blessed to be singled out to meet him,” he said.

They said they’d think it over. Meet you tomorrow, Ramashree said. Ian was not keen, but Celina felt it would be an experience, and they should go.

The next day Ramashree came to their hotel, was very happy they’d agreed, said he’d arrange tickets for two days later, on the overnight train to Bangalore, travelling with them.

For the next two days, Ramashree spent a lot of time with them, regaling them with narrations of miracles Baba performed.

After dinner on the train, Ramashree took out a packet with pastries, which they ate heartily, and, looking forward to a new experience, they slept soundly.

They both felt kind of kind of groggy when they woke up. Ramashree was not in his berth.

They arrived in Bangalore, still no Ramashree. Then they found their suitcases were missing. They inquired with other passengers, who had no clue. Ian discovered his wallet missing, and Celina opened her handbag and found her wallet was gone, too. Their passports were still there, but their return airline tickets were in the suitcase.

Getting off the train, traumatized, they went to the station master’s office and lodged a complaint. After two hours of deliberation, they were asked to report to the British Council.

They were given money to tide them over as they had to buy clothes and essentials. It took two days to arrange money from friends in Goa, and then they returned home, vowing never to come to India again. 

With DJ’s like Andrew Rayel, Paul Ritch, Dickster , Shermonology, Apster, and Richard Durand, just to name a few, Sunburn fans joined their favorite DJs for full power dance session and proved that they knew their music. The highlights of Day 1 were the live performance sensation from South Africa – Goldifsh, and the mainstage headliner and returning Sunburn DJ – Afrojack.

Fans from over 40 countries around the world and over 70 cities across India, had travelled to Vagator to be a part of Sunburn Goa 2013. International flags could be seen waving at the sets of Quitino, Marco Bailey, Miss Nine, Arnej, Ajja, and DJ Fresh. Sunburn resident DJ, Shaan, pulled in a massive crowd for his sundowner set on the Cubezoid stage and Markus Shulz closed a fantastic day 2 with a banging set on the Dance Temple Mainstage.

Mixmag UK tweeted on their official site: “Shizz is rockin’ @sunburnfestival Goa. 170, 000 Indians can’t be wrong” During the middle of his record breaking set, to the massive crowd of adoring Sunburn fans, the world’s favorite DJ, Axwell, turned down the music to say, “Sunburn, I have to be honest with you. When I play for the money, I go

to Las Vegas. When I play for the holiday, I go to Miami. When I play for love, I go to Sunburn India! There is so much love here tonight!”

And it wasn’t just the mainstage. All 7 stages were packed with fans enjoying every genre of EDM possible. At Space Station, Timo Maas concluded an incredible ‘vintage year’ with a killer set, just before the most respected DJ in the world hit the stage. With his unrivalled skills, Pete Tong and the All Gone Pete Tong stage was absolute magic.

After watching the brilliant sunset over the Arabian Sea, psy lovers went mad at the Space Jungle stage. Ace Ventura, one of the busiest DJs in the

industry, was followed by Starling’s aggressive twilight set. With no intentions of going anywhere else, the fans kept dancing until the very end of Reality Grid’s full-power set.

House fans has a unbelievable lineup on Cubezoid. Wolf pack made their return to India, after Sunburn B2B. Mark Knight celebrated his 10th year of “Toolroom Knights” with an energetic set. No ID, the Dutch Duo sensation totally killed it, getting the crowd revved up for the final headliner – the hottest House DJ/ Producer Duo on the planet - Prok and Fitch.

Just before 10pm, Sunburn Goa 2013 reached it’s climax.

The biggest beats were dropped, the brightest pyrotechnics blasted, the CO2 guns fired, the confetti rained down and fireworks filled the sky. The energy of the Sunburn crowd was palpable. All souls were united in celebration, drawn together by the music, the shared experience of the festival and Sunburn.

The entire world was watching Sunburn Goa Festival this year.

While fans danced on the Vagator Hills, the rest of the world watched the Live Feed of the festival and linked in via social media.

With the fastest growing EDM fan base in the world, Asia’s #1 festival had promised to be the biggest ever. And it was. Sunburn Goa 2013 created history.

Goa has a winter?

I

t’s generally assumed by fellow Sangoldkars that the Man and I are eccentric. We rise pre-dawn to water the plants, a job generally left to the Maker who cares for all creatures big, small and Goan, who has stretched the monsoons over four months and then provided heavy dew for another four, so farmers and plant lovers need to work for approximately a third of the year. Amen.

One neighbour politely wishes me good morning through chattering teeth, head covered by an acrylicwool shawl, upper limbs enveloped in two layers of husband’s long-sleeved shirts, brand new canvas shoes firmly on socked (sic, but that’s how we talk hereabouts) feet. Her hands are folded, fingers tucked into elbow folds. “Bai,” she says by way of conversation. “Cold, no?”

I’m busy bending, stretching, untangling a kink out of that stiff plastic pipe. Yes, I tell her.

The poder comes along, ‘monkey-cap’ protecting his head from frost and chill. She feels sorry for him and reflects a second “Cold, no?” towards me.

I stupidly decide to educate her about the temperatures in the Himalayas, Kashmir, the NorthEast, even neighbouring Belgaum. Blank stare. I tell her about snow. She has her aha moment: she’s seen snow. Her cousin from Canada had come via New York once, bought her a transparent globe with a ‘Statue of Liberty’ inside it, floating in clear fluid. When the globe was shaken, a white substance floated to the statue’s head, and slowly floated to its feet. “Snow,” said my true-blue Goan friend. “I have it in my showcase.”

I tell her about the extreme conditions our soldiers live in, in Siachen. She tells me how her arthritis improves with a khare udak dip in the Baga waters in late February. “Our bhangrachey golden soil, the water, all have the most therapeutic effect on these things.

The cold-cold waters of the sea at this time of the year make miracles, haan.”

I decide to educate her. I tell her that the ground is so cold that the soft snow hardens into ice. I know, her eyes tell me; her lips say: “Ice? In my freezer, lots of cubes, but they give us sore throats, so we don’t use them.” Then she added: “But you won’t fall sick, don’t worry, this early morning oxygen is good for health.” Her yoga teacher said so.

I recall a debate with another Goan about use of geysers in the bathrooms and wearing (artificial)

leather jackets on motorcycles so that you don’t get the sniffles, sore throat, joint pain, headaches, fever, the runs, etc. That’s not all. Hot milk with sugar and haldi is consumed first thing in the morning, last thing at night. I guess the nausea it gives rise to makes you forget all discomfort due to 17 degrees Celsius.

Whichever part of the world you belong to: the cold northern hemisphere or the sunny southern one, happy 2014 everybody.

hen Suraj Chavan was killed on New Year’s Day, police found four empty beer bottles on the floor of the car that collided with his bike outside the Army Signal Training Centre at Bambolim. The car’s driver, hailing from Haryana, has been taken into custody. That followed two fatal accidents this past New Year’s Eve that killed a Briton and a local Goan, in addition to accidents reported at Mapusa, Anjuna, Bicholim, Colva, Verna, Valpoi, Maina Curtorim and Cuncolim.

It’s not clear how many of these accidents were due to alcohol consumption and some – like the death of two teenage bikers who hit an unmarked speed bump in Olavlim in North Goa on the night of Jan. 1– likely had nothing to do with drinking at all.

But a sad and simple reality remains. Goa, with its fastgrowing reputation as the drinking capital of India, is also a major flashpoint of drunken driving.

The number of traffic deaths in Goa has actually gone down in the past few years, from 333 in 2011 to 292 in 2012 to 242 registered up until Dec. 16 of last year.

The likeliest explanation for the marginal decrease has been the absence of mining and the speeding trucks that came along with it.

Authorities believe that among the accidents that do occur, the percentage of those with alcohol involved is going up.

A combination of an overwhelmed traffic police force, growing numbers of domestic tourists coming here on drinking binges and the lack of severe consequences for those who drive drunk has exacerbated the situation.

Since the Goa government doesn’t collect statistics on the number of

accidents that are alcohol-related, we must rely on anecdotes to flesh out the picture. Stories like that of Shripad Keni, the police constable who injured himself by driving an official jeep into a compound wall on New Year’s Eve a year ago, and then failed a breathalyzer test.

Or the story of 22-year-old beautician Kirti Chodankar, who was seated in a parked vehicle at Guirim three years ago, waiting to be taken to a bride’s home for a hair-do, when a speeding Santro, driven by drunken New Year’s revellers, rammed into the vehicle and killed her.

“Right from Dec. 20 till Jan. 1 we are stepping up our drives to nab drunk driving armed with alcometers,” Police Inspector (Traffic) D Angle at the Panjim Police station told Goa Streets. While, he said he couldn’t offer figures this time of the year, he admitted that drunken driving was at its highest.

And he acknowledged that the exponential increase in traffic at this time of year was way more than the meagerly staffed traffic police departments can handle.

“All my men are busy manning the traffic junctions and the bottlenecks in Panjim to be able to do both. We can’t be pulling people over as well as managing traffic,” Angle said.

As a result, cases of drunk driving are noticed only when there is an accident or if someone is noticed to be driving erratically.

He further said that only if the person is found to be driving at a level of 0.035 grams per decilitre (one-tenth of a litre) of blood, he can be booked although the legal limit

was 0.030 (the added 0.005 is to account for reading errors).

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar acknowledged the problem of drunken driving while addressing the state legislative assembly last year and promised to solve it, but the situation on the ground remains the same.

“Drunk driving has reached enormous proportions. Drunk driving cannot be permitted. We will give people enough time to correct their habits. If five people go for a party, one must not drink,” Parrikar had said.

“The police will be given powerful vehicles which can run in excess of 120130 kilometres per hour for Highway patrol. They will be parked every 10-12 kilometres. By next tourist season it will already be effective. They will check for over speeding, drivers causing problems as well as drunk driving,” Parrikar said.

While Highway patrolling has begun, the “superfast, powerful” vehicles are yet to be procured for the Goa Police.

How many more accidents and people losing their lives will it take before people change their habits and before the government and the Goa Police get their act together? 

he last five days of 2013 brought the values of Peace Love Unity and Respect (P.L.U.R) to the forefront of dance music. The first ever Vh1 Supersonic unfurled over the sands of Candolim Beach bringing fans from India and around the world a spectacle that spread over the three stages: the main stage Sub Sonica, the leviathan Spectrum and the edgy Labratoire Supersonique. just three weeks. Conceptualized by Live Viacom 18 and Nikhil Chinapa, the festival took on their shared ideals: friends and family. It’s the dance music community within India and the world that is the driving force behind everything within the realm of electronica. Super Location, Super Lineup and Super You was Vh1 Supersonic’s slogan, as it aimed to shine a spotlight on those very important tenets. The euphoric faces dotted along the sands in thousands, revealed that it was a successful endeavor.

The artists playing over the five days of the festival, also exemplified those principles. Above & Beyond, Benny Benassi, BT, Booka Shade, Ferry Corsten, Protoculture, Max Graham, Albin Myers, Funkagenda, Jerome Ismae-ae, John ‘00’ Fleming, Felix Cartal, Yousef and many more, flew in to Goa to support and carry this new venture to greater heights. India’s homegrown stars shared the stage with equal conviction. Pearl, Tuhin Mehta, Ash Roy,

The fifth and final day of Vh1 Supersonic ended with plenty of smiles, heartfelt emotions, and just a few tears. Tony McGuinness of the mighty Above & Beyond concluded these five magical days on Candolim's beautiful sands the only way he knew how -- with classic tunes that unified all of the assembled music lovers for a bit of Group Therapy.

No dance music act can match Above & Beyond's intensely spiritual performances, and McGuiness' performance was a fitting end to a festival that has been about bringing people together to celebrate dance music's unmatched power. For five unprecedented days, Goa has witnessed a unique festival that has returned the spirit of community to the Indian dance music scene.

H

ow do we change as day morphs into night? How does a criminal’s mind work? Why do some like soft pao and others prefer katre pao or the kankonn? These colorful questions featured in a play on the humble Goan poder - The Breadman’s Calling, staged by the Mustard Seed Art Company at Margao and Panjim in the first week of December.

The play was written and directed by Isabel Santa Rita Vas, a veteran playwright whose troupe has staged over 55 plays so far. An unspecified object has been stolen from the house of Bostiao Mendonsa, the town baker (played by Ryan Semelhago). A local lass Joella (Efigenia de Santana Miranda) decides to play Sherlock Holmes. There are several suspects― the town lawyer Albert (Kiran Bhandari), the baker’s delivery boy Kistu (Yulian Pinto) who pines for Joella, and even Mersu (Celsa

Fernandes), Joella’s mother who works as a freelance ‘flying’ cook.

Isabel gives a magical twist to her Goan whodunit thriller by exploring the alter-egos of her characters. As he kneads dough in the wee hours, Kistu asserts himself as ambitious Christy, Joella (who detests the nickname ‘Vency’ given by her mother) sees herself as Venezuela, yearning to sing. She recites haunting lines by poet Salil Chaturvedi on the mystique of the night. Her mother Mersu the cook transforms into the sensual Morgiana, who dances in the night to rise above her wretched past. Albert broods over the criminal mind; the lawyer of the day is Aristo, the philosopher of the night.

Bostiao the now wealthy baker thinks of his long-dead hardworking and stern mother, yet the memory of the ugliness of her hands terrifies him.

The poder inhabits a transition space in Goan time―the space between night and day. So in the play, even the alter-ego of the day is explored.

A second theft occurs. As Joella dips her hand into Kistu’s bread basket she discovers a Chinese vase, an antique from Bostiao’s house, and he becomes a prime suspect. But Joella suspects Kistu has been framed, and proves that the crafty Albert had played this dirty trick. Albert/ Aristo yields to the darker side in his quest to understand the criminal mind and becomes a diabolical schemer himself. It is he who has carried out the first theft― of a seemingly worthless portrait of a traditional poder―from Bostiao’s house and sold it to a museum, just to exercise his evil mind, and to discredit Kistu the poder-boy in the eyes of Joella, who Albert secretly lusts for. Joella cracks the case open and the portrait is recovered. But Bostiao goes further and actually cracks the portrait open to reveal a hidden diamond ring belonging to his parents.

who proposes to Joella and everyone lives happily ever after.

Under Isabel Vas’ direction, there is impeccable English where desired, but the native ‘Konklish’ and multilingualism of Goan folk is also delivered delightfully in the lines of the characters. ‘Itu beginu?’ queries the poder, meaning ‘So early?’ The ‘u’ at the end of almost every word is a peculiarity of the Sashtti (Salcete) dialect. ‘Bor mure tum, malcriad!’(you are quite a rude chap!) shows how Portuguese words were absorbed into Konkani. The play of words like ‘Pulis-bulis’ ‘Investigatebinvestigate’ are derived from such usage in Konkani, where the first letter of a word is replaced by ‘b’ and repeated. Quaint English idioms like ‘Potatoes are not boiled twice’ are probably more used in Goa than anywhere else. There is a clever play of words in the title too – Is it also about the Breadman’s calling in life?

Beside his ‘original’ katre pao, poie, bakri and kankonn that Kistu takes great pride in, he also carries ‘duplicate’

bread in his basket, pao that has been sourced from other bakers, possibly the ubiquitous migrant bakers from Goa’s neighbouring states. The times are changing. ‘Te poder gele, te undde kabar zale’ is inevitably quoted, an old proverb, often related to the passing of Portuguese colonial rule.

It was a delightful play, made pleasant on the eye by sets designed by Norman Tagore, with a poder’s bicycle at centre stage. Vamona Navelcar’s sketch on the play brochure shows the poder of yesteryear carrying the bread panttlo on his head, walking along with staff in hand, many decades before the bicycle came along.

The Mustard Seed Art Company, founded in 1987, stands out as a pioneering and vibrant theatre group that has seen a whole generation of young theatre enthusiasts pass through its ranks. Here’s to many more entertaining, provocative and inspiring productions from this theatrical ensemble! 

ith its 100 kilometers of coastline and 250 kilometers of inland waterways rich in marine life, Goa and fish are undoubtedly inseparable. From the looks of things, however, what’s not inseparable are fish and fishermen.

Once upon a time the main occupation of the people of Goa was fishing and most Goans were fishermen. Increased mechanization, the slow demise of traditional methods, and the lure of alternative pursuits like tourism-sector work have led to a significant decrease in the number of fisherman in the state. It’s probably not an overstatement to call the raponkars, as the traditional Goan fisherman caste is known, a dying breed.

Fifty-two-year-old ramponkar Suresh Shet from Chorjuem started fishing at age of 11. His mom, dad, grandfather and forefathers also fished.

Here is his take on the situation: “Fishing is the bread and butter for me and my family. The government is supportive and is granting subsidies and licenses to us as and when required. Compared to the past the number of fishermen in Goa has decreased drastically. Now-a-days many people in Goa prefer the tourism industry and like working

in hotels, beach resorts and giving their houses on rent to the tourists and making money rather than working hard and going out fishing. Our youth also nowadays prefer white collar jobs”.

Suresh says that mechanized boats often destroy the nets placed on the shore by traditional fishermen like him, who fish with small canoes. Most fishermen make arrangements for micro financing and buy a small quantity of net to catch the solar shrimp that are abundant in Goan waters for the first fifteen days after the monsoon ban ends – from August 1 to August 15. A good catch of solar shrimps, say 5 to 6 tonnes, can fetch Rs 4 lakh to 6 lakh a day, he says.

That’s big money, and fishermen make a quick buck as these shrimp are mostly exported to China and Japan. Keep in mind, however, that fishing in Goa is not a year-round activity (it’s banned during the monsoons), and that fish yields in the state’s coastal waters have been steadily declining. In the end, you’d be hard-pressed to find a rich raponkar.

All that’s despite the fact that fish is a must for the majority Goans. And many families in Goa survive on fishing. Fishermen catch fish with nets and sometimes with naked hands. Some ride the trawlers far out at sea.

To feed this large market of fish eaters and also to export to other states, large fleets of mechanized boats leave the shore every day. Earlier there were only the traditional canoes used by the ramponkars. Now there are various types of fishing boats going into the deep sea and also into the estuaries.

Though many still fish in the traditional method, some of them have modernized themselves by fitting a Yamaha outboard motor to their wooden canoes.

Rituraj Tandel, a 38-year-old ramponkar from Vasco, said he got into the job after the death of his father in order to carry on the family tradition of fishing. “I went to school till the 3rd standard and was forced to leave due to my family problems. When I was small I used to go fishing with my father and had the mastered the skills at childhood itself”.

“The key to catching fish”, ramponkar Tandel says, “is studying the kind of fish in a certain area and buying the net accordingly. The whole difference in fishing is getting the fish caught by their gills different areas, different fish, so different net sizes.”

He continues, “Today the government is providing us with subsidies but yet it’s not encouraging many of our youngsters. I couldn’t study but I want both my children to study and do well in their career. My income is not sufficient for my family yet I am happy with what I am doing. During the season time we earn good money but during the ban I have no work and then I am forced to do manual labour so I can earn some money for my family. My wife works in other people’s houses and thus supports the family during those months”.

Tandel says he loves being a fisherman, but laments he can’t do more for his family.

“I am happy being a fisherman but I am not sure whether my kids are happy with me as I am unable to satisfy all their needs.”

In recent years the fish catch has gone down not only in Goa, but along the entire Konkan coast. The fishermen attribute this to the foreign deep sea trawlers who are supposed to fish in international waters, but regularly venture into Indian territory.

It seems clear a big part of the problem is the over exploitation of fish resources by mechanized trawlers. Now that the Supreme Court has ruled that the 55-day ban during monsoon must be honoured, the situation might improve in the coming years.

It’s a wait and watch situation to see how the ramponkars manage to survive in the battle of existence against the mechanized fishermen. If they go, so does something beautiful about Goa. 

How many of those gifts do you actually

he silly season’s nearly over, and you’re stuck with a five cakes still wrapped in transparent plastic, four sets of table-napkins, three packets of fancy candles, two boxes of chocolates and a bottle of cheap wine (you could use that for trying out an au vin recipe). Not including the curios which, if you display them, are going to add to your dusting woes. You’re lucky no one’s gifted you a puppy or turtle. Or shiny marbles one more time. Or your umpteenth pair of brightly coloured socks (unless you’re a collector). Or plants/flowers your mother-in-law is allergic to.

If you think buying presents is a tough job, using gifts someone else had chosen is tougher. Those with bursting wardrobes and overflowing book-shelves (and no time to read those tomes) know how irritating it can be to add yet another item to the collection. So much easier to handle a piece of precious jewellery, but not everyone takes the hint if you tell them that.

So, after you’ve carefully unwrapped, uncreased, folded and kept away the wrapping paper – you do re-use that, don’t you – sort out the gifts into will use, may use and won’t use ever. Put a little chit inside the gift with the name of the person who gave it to you. That way you won’t by mistake give it back to the same person. And make sure there’s nothing written inside the box. (Once, when a friend opened a carton of fine china coffee mugs, she found a note that read ‘from ‘X’ to ‘Y’’ indicating that they weren’t originally meant for her). If you don’t want the next person to pass it on further, paste a chit with your name and good wishes prominently on the inside of the box, or

write the same with a bright felt-tipped pen. Break the chain thus.

Books can be passed on quite easily if one’s name isn’t written anywhere (inspect carefully, people like me write stuff in one of the inner pages for an ‘ouch’ moment: if I’ve gifted a book, I don’t like it to be passed on). Ever since we began to download music and movies,

it’s hard to give away CDs and tapes (remember those?) if one does receive any.

If your relatives and friends insist on giving you pillow cases with ‘sweetdreams’ embroidered on them, or thin steel trays that make a patak sound when handled or perfumes that are strong and horrid enough to be sprayed in bus-stand loos, please just give them away, perhaps to someone very poor, or at least very poor taste. Some people give very practical gifts: diapers and some unmentionable female hygiene products, soaps, shampoos, ear-buds, refills for ball-point pens. I don’t mind those kinds, I’m actually quite comfortable in this category till the level of bath-towels, for they are consumables.

What if you live in a tiny flat and you receive a huge crystal glass bowl?

No place to keep it, too expensive to gift away easily, emotions involved?

I suggest stash it away until you buy yourself a bigger place. If you must reuse it, make sure you remember to give it to a favourite relative/friend who will value it, so that every time you see it, you know it’s ‘yours’ and feel some joy. Not of owning, but that the thing is being cared for. Like one might feel for a loved pet. There are people who feel the

same affection for their (dear, departed) expensive gifts.

There are people who keep every gift they receive: unmatched sets of coffee mugs, painted shells, manicure sets, etc.

Every painting and ceramic plate they get is displayed. In the old days, wallclocks took a lot of wall-space in these hoarders’ homes. They delight in telling you that the (truly awful) blouse(s) they are wearing was/were gifted by xyz neighbour/schoolmate/acquaintance.

This article isn’t for them. (The slashes to include both singular and plural are for grammar Nazis, my apologies to lesser mortals.)

The New Year has been ushered in. In homes across Goa, unwanted gifts will find their way to the loft, to be aired, dusted, repacked and gifted when the time comes to people on birthdays, anniversaries, friendship days, and more.

The smart ones, who want to make sure their gifts are valued know that, when in doubt, it’s best to go traditional.

Home-made foods are rarely re-gifted.

Specially if the giver smartly insists on opening the jar/dabba in the presence of everybody and offers the snack/dish/ drink around. There’s something about well-made hand-crafted things and living (potted or otherwise) plants that makes it difficult for recipients to resist keeping them.

And before you decide what to keep, discard or pass on, bear in mind: the mantra of the three ‘R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

f you had to choose Goa’s top USP’s (OK, for all you business virgins out there, that stands for Unique Selling Propositions), what would they be? The beach shacks? Its role as India’s Party Central? The laidback vibe?

All of the above, yes, but the list is decidedly incomplete without IndoPortuguese houses, those architectural gems bequeathed to our lovely state by 451 years of Portuguese rule. They’re not always easy to spot, being hidden away as they often are in difficult-toreach alleys and shrouded in unkempt vegetation. There is solace here, even

as they cry out to be explored.

One way to explore them – and to celebrate them – is through design.

I am a graphic design student from the National Institute of Design, who was given the opportunity to illustrate these marvels of Goa through Beard Design, a passionate design studio in the heart of Porvorim. One of the things that sets Beard apart is that, aside from working for clients from all over the world, they also work for themselves, taking on projects that are close to their hearts.

One such project is ‘Houses of Goa,’ an illustrated tribute to the state’s Indo-Portuguese dwellings, and a fitting tribute to our beautiful state.

The idea for doing this had been formulating in their minds for many months. What a privilege it was for me

Since little information on Goa’s Indo-Portuguese houses is available online, the houses had to be individually visited and photographed. Most of them are hidden away in noncommercial areas and are engulfed by so many trees, vines and other life forms that’s it’s often difficult to even see them.

The idea of the illustrations was to do away with all

the flora (and occasional fauna!) that hides these houses and give people the clarity they won’t get to see on the actual ground. We wanted to highlight the facades, the big windows and doors, and the beautiful railing.

Once we had photographs and initial sketches of the houses, we started by exploring different illustration styles, ranging from water-color to handdrawn vectors.

Finally, each house was painstakingly illustrated in a flat vector style with a tremendous amount of detail, from the ornate grills to the intricate ornaments on the walls and windows.

Although illustrations are an artist’s perspective on something and I had the freedom to experiment, I felt it was my duty to stay true to the form of these houses, and not go all arty on them. It would take me roughly three to four days to finish one illustration.

The style of these artworks has evolved over three months. Each time you develop a style, you need to stick to it

and you must update or make changes to the previous artworks, which takes time. I have taken a few liberties and tried to highlight parts of the house that were strikingly beautiful.

I traveled to Loutolim, Chandor, Chinchini, Quepem and Majorda in the peak monsoon on my scooty, with a camera and an ineffective raincoat and met some amazingly helpful people on the way. Some owners boast about their houses for carrying the name of the family for generations and in some cases the owners have lovingly named the house after their wives. The people of Goa are so kind and cultured, and I felt pressure to do some good work, so as to not disappoint them.
