If you thought DJing was sole male turf, think again dude. Women DJs are out to banish that thought and put you in your place with their talent, skill and good looks. While they are doing it, they are also working very hard to ensure that there is more to them than sex appeal, says ETHEL DA COSTA.

In Goa, flip a coin and every corner lands a DJ, but hey we ain’t complaining. Instead, girdle your hips to the party scene this December, with a page from a typical night out:

There’s a hip looking DJ pumping up the volume like a funked-out bat from hell, as bouncers nod their salute (happens with the A-list you see) and open the door to usher you into a smoke-filled booby trap that looks set to burst into flames (you’re advised not to wear inflammable hair gel). You take a deep breath of fresh air before you step in, because trust me, you are going to need it. Heat, sweat, carbon dioxide, cigarettes and endless taps of take-me-to-la-la land water flows at the bar. From page 3 and no apologies. This is your quintessential Saturday night painting the town red. Unlike other South Asian destinations, Goa does actually boast night spots where males and females are present in relatively equal proportion. However, until recently you’d be hard pressed to find a lady Disc Jockey. Like so many other fields, being a dude and being a DJ went hand in hand. But really, does that make sense? Is there any indication that the qualities that go into being a good DJ – charisma, rhythm, knowledge, talent – are the sole purview of the male gender? Not surprisingly, then, women have taken to the Pioneer as ducks to water, negotiating their way up centerstage. Being a woman DJ is filled with excitement and challenges. Excitement because these days lady DJ’s are quite the draw, with nightclubs around Goa and India looking for unusual ways to attract a crowd and club goers showing particular enthusiasm for the shows of the fairer sex. Sure, that means that being a woman can actually be an advantage. However, the benefit comes with a challenge: proving that it’s not your pretty face that matters but your performance behind the console. Explains Bombay-based DJ Paroma Chatterjee, an up-and-coming DJ diva. “There’s no denying that women can often be taken for granted by men. But DJing is a dream job if you love it.” There’s one Goan DJ who’s clearly been ahead of her time. A popular face on Goa’s nightlife circuit for the last 15 years, DJ Ayesha Pramanik adds much fashionable eyeballs not only to her spunky coloured hair and attitude, but to the tunes she spins with gusto. A livewire behind the console, and the perfect muse to headline the first edition of my Fashion Fridays Club Nite Series (May, at Butter), she had the floor and clubbers eating out of her hand till the wee hours of the morning. The encores were many. DJ Ayesha gets up close candid, “I think there are highs and lows in every profession. Music has always been my passion, and this is what I feel I do best … I’ve been a DJ when there were hardly two or three women in the music industry, as a DJ or as a Producer. It was difficult at that time. But nothing to complain about, as hardships only teach you to be stronger and better at your work and self.” Going by her popularity quotient in Goa and Bangalore, she has undoubtedly earned Turn to page 6

`Quality, not Quantity matters in Music’ With a growing fan base in Goa, international artiste based in Ukraine DJ Teri Miko believes `Quality, not Quantity matters in Music.’ DJ is a Woman: I think it’s incredible to be a woman DJ in the male dominated industry, because you get lots of attention from the crowd. But at the same time, there are so many people who look down on a woman DJ, but I do not care and ignore their attitude, because every day and every event of mine and thousands of women DJs across the world prove that a woman can be as professional as male DJs. Far too few women DJs: I think it’s not about quantity, it’s about quality. I like some woman DJs in India like Ayesha Pramanik, Pearl, DJ Rink. I don’t think we should compare them to Europe because everyone has their own unique style. The JOB never gets easier: We have to work hard which I do every single day spending a lot of time in studio and working on my mixes. When I get an offer from an organizer, my first advice to them is to listen to my music, check my gig videos and not just my photo shoot, because I don’t like to compromise with my music. I think about setting a goal and follow it. I would like to contribute with my music. Happy Memories: The Goa Beach Grind, South Goa, because I received the best energy from the 17,000 people at the festival. It will always be a good memory. Next Goal: From here to Top 100. I would love to be part of Ultra Music Festival and Tomorrowland.

6 The Lowdown From page 5 her spot under the search lights. “Nobody said it’s going to be easy, so practice your talent well. No one can stop you, if you’re good. Be confident,” is Ayesha’s advice to all aspiring young DJs waiting in the woodwork. A new girl on the block with just two years on the spin-masters, DJ Paroma Chatterjee is learning quick the tricks of her trade and the highs of being a woman DJ on the dance circuit. “It is a pure entertainment high,” she coos. “Women get to perform more often as a guest DJ than men, as there isn’t intense competition amongst women at all.” The low point, DJ Paroma asserts, “is the constant pressure to look presentable at all times, and at the same time deliver good performances.” Ok, so women DJs are taken at face value first!!? DJ Paroma quickly corroborates, “We Indians still need to open our minds up towards women being a part of the male-dominated industry. Only an artiste understands the `feel good’ factor when you overcome all these challenges. I believe it’s really hard for our older generation to accept this and for a lot of other women to actually put their foot down and take that huge risk.” Spoken like a true winner who looks beyond glamour and knows push from shove. Home-grown, glamorous, hardworking, learning all her early moves spinning at local Goan clubs, DJ Donabelle, now based in Dubai, started DJing at 17, took a break because she wasn’t sure “whether I could consider it as a full time profession,” and let experience, maturity and understanding of the industry decide her future move. Result? This go-getter cookie has been spinning around the world for the last six years now. “For sure it’s not easy if you’re doing it the right way, as there is always over or under-cutting in the business. Sometimes there are women in the industry who just do it for the fun of it, not realizing that they make it difficult for other women who have actually made it their profession,” says DJ Donabelle vociferously. Believing that unlike Europe where professionalism is respected and a way of business life, “In India, everything works on networking and `who knows who’ to get the right break at the right time

in the right place. If one is not well in tune with the right trends and tracks, they are left behind in this race,” she shares. Donabelle has moved up the ladder the hard way. “It is quite a challenge to keep the crowd going,” says this shaker for her gender. Her formula is 50% mixing, 50% crowd pleasing = 100% great DJ and assured future bookings. “This is a serious industry, so please don’t get into it just for the fun of it,” Donabelle rues. Which boldly translates to wannabes: `Girl, you won’t last long if you’re just happy being a pretty face.’ The Paris Hiltons of the world notwithstanding, this is actual work! Any dream location for this Goan to do herself and Goa proud? “Currently, I am traveling and playing in South East Asia between Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and definitely want to play in Japan. I would love to have the opportunity to play at more festivals in Goa and around the world. It is sad to see so many big events and festivals being hosted in Goa, but unfortunate to say that only one or two Goans are a part of it,” observes this DJ, who seems to have also read my mind. Here’s hoping talented Goan DJs fight harder to be part of the festival programming that use Goa as a venue. And here’s a cautionary footnote for festival organizers or club owners looking for women DJs: We are more than just eye-candy, boys. So pay up and well for the skills we present. We can and do run head to shoulder, as equals, in an industry which is yet to pay its respects to women talent, however hard fought our spaces. Meanwhile, party hard and stay safe. Chef Sergio Corbera and Sommelier Marta Delfa put together the fabulous Torres Wine Dinner at Palms restaurants, on the grounds of the Park Hyatt Resort. On offer was a six-course Spanish degustation menu paired with unique wines from the House of Torres. Goa Streets was extremely happy to be present, and to be wined and dined, literally. The event took place under the stars right on the beach (where Palms is located) and, combined with the food and drink, the effect was nothing short of magical. Each course for the wine dinner, which took place on Dec. 7, was a signature by Chef Sergio who worked together with visiting Sommelier Marta Delfa to perfect this unique wine-pairing evening. t’s not 100 percent clear that Nelson Mandela deserved every accolade being thrown his way in the wake of his passing last week. And some of the qualities he’s being lauded for are certainly open to debate. He’s being called a pacifist, and yet he did choose, right or wrong, to take up armed struggle against South African apartheid. Many say that without him South Africa would have descended into a bloodbath, though there’s reason to believe the blacks might not have sought revenge, especially considering that the African National Congress had always included both black and white members. What’s not open to debate, however, is that Mandela was a moral giant. By leading his nation’s struggle against racial injustice, he became an internationally recognized symbol of dignity and human rights. By emerging from 27 years of imprisonment without hatred or rancour, he delivered a transcendent message about the power of forgiveness. He led his people not according to the authority of his position but from the example of his life, which inspired, uplifted and engaged others in a shared mission. There are many great people in the world, but historical giants are rare. There’s only one Mahatma Gandhi, one Abraham Lincoln, one Mother Theresa, one Martin Luther King Jr. I was four years old when the latter was assassinated, and yet his life and struggles very much informed my feelings about the world and my desire to be part of the ‘light.’ This, ultimately, is why we need these giants. They are guideposts showing us a better way. Here’s what Barack Obama had to say about Mandela at this week’s memorial service: “Over 30 years ago, while still a student, I learned of Nelson Mandela and the struggles in this beautiful land. It stirred something in me … And while I will always fall short of Madiba’s example, he makes me want to be better.” When I learned of Mandela’s death, my thoughts immediately turned to my two young sons. I was grateful that their first years on earth corresponded to the final years of Nelson Mandela, and I hoped that he would inspire them in the same way Dr. King inspired me. And then I thought of India and Goa, and all the political leaders here who could take a lesson from Madiba on how to wield power constructively. And all the voters in this land facing stark choices this election season, with some of candidates so un-Mandela like

Why we need historical giants when it comes to the issue of tolerance. South Africa is far from a perfect place. The economy is slumping, inequality is rising and corruption is rampant. And yet it is a democracy that enjoys the respect of the world, and despite the dire predictions of a generation ago, it is at peace. Mandela’s journey took him from a privileged childhood of tribal royalty to the underground struggles of the antiapartheid movement to the cruelties of prison life to the office of the presidency. When he was inaugurated, he famously invited one of his former white jailers to attend the ceremony. Unlike other revolutionaries, when his term was up he happily handed the job to someone else. “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion,” Mandela once said. “People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” It’s one thing to be a freedom fighter and another to be an effective national leader. The fearlessness and stubbornness required for an effective

rebellion are often the same qualities that can stymie a politician. Mandela’s gift was that he was both – a courageous rebel and a pragmatic politician. It can be said that he was the last great liberator of the past century. Where will the next ones come from? I’m not really sure. Goa’s Parallel Universe The Creative, Bohemian and Path Breaking People Who Make Goa Their Home By Pedro Menezes

any don’t know this, but Orhan Pamuk, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2006, stays a good portion of the year here in Goa, in a village in Salcete, writing his next masterpiece. As does another globally famous author, Amitav Ghosh, who lives in Aldona. Not to mention Pamuk’s partner, Kiran Desai, winner of the 2006 Man Booker Prize, who also spends lots of time in the state. As do hundreds of other creative minds, drawing inspiration from the Goan countryside, the rustle of leaves being blown away by the winds, the sing-song melodies of wandering birds. It’s not just writers, though, who find Goa inspiring. Top Indian fashion

designer Malini Ramani also spends much of her time – when she’s not jetsetting around the world - in Goa. She’s now shifted home from the hustle and bustle of Candolim, to the more serene environs of Siolim. Her equally famous mother, socialite Bina Ramani, also calls Goa home for half the year. There are dozens of others who may not be famous faces in the media, but who are making a big splash with their noteworthy, creative projects in Goa. Some are local and some are foreign. What they have in common is that they form part of what can be called a parallel universe in Goa – an alternative scene consisting of artists, entrepreneurs, writers, performers and Bohemians of every stripe. It can be said that the scene’s epicenter remains largely in and around Anjuna, though the crowd is dispersed throughout North and South Goa. Let’s hear what some of these denizens of Goa’s parallel universe have to say. Kees Van Andel and Karen Peace Kees Van Andel and Karen Peace have made themselves at home in an old Goan-Portuguese house in Assagao, where they have a high-end jewellery boutique called Cheshire Cat that attracts clientele from all over the world – by word of mouth. The peaceful environment in Goa, they say, is very conducive for creativity. “We wanted

And when they come to Goa they come straight here,” she says. There are three goldsmith artisans working for them during the season, and they have also trained five young women from in and around Assagao to make beaded jewellery. Their clothing line is called Pink India, and the Cheshire Cat gallery also has paintings and other designer items. The thing they like about Goa, they say, is “The peacefulness. Everybody knows each other. The locals are very friendly, very nice, very open. We felt very welcome when we first bought this house. They treat you like normal people, not like a tourist.” While she’s from north Ireland, he’s from Holland. Sarmishtha Ray Sarmishtha Ray is one of India’s top artists, with her paintings adorning the prime minister’s house In New Delhi and private collections around the world. While she spent most of the ‘90’s in Baga and Calangute, painting and helping her partner run a restaurant, she now lives along the quiet riverside in Candolim. She has a different take on what it means to be ‘alternative’ in Goa. “Yes,” she says when asked whether she considers herself to be part of the alternative scene here, “Because I am not a Goan and I was brought up in Bombay. I don’t speak Konkani either. I would say that people like me contribute to a cosmopolitan Goan culture. It is an alternative to the local culture and customs. The good thing about Goa is that it has absorbed people of all cultures peacefully and harmoniously. Being ‘alternative’ would mean that I carry on living an urban existence in a semi-rural set-up like Goa. It is a lifestyle.” Elaborating, she says, “The mixture of different cultures in Goa has produced a vibrant and colourful culture. Yes, there is a downside - a certain amount of hedonism and self-indulgence has crept

in. There is a lot of selfishness and greed. But this belt - Candolim to Arambol also supports many talented musicians, painters, fashion designers and writers - some of whom have made it big globally. Food is also quite exciting in its diversity and there are many different cuisines and a lot of choice. Like, I said before, it’s colourful.” Unfortunately, Sarmishtha has suffered some setbacks of late, including being robbed and undergoing some health difficulties. Yet she betrays little bitterness. Yahel Chirinian Yahel Chirinian, an acclaimed installation artist who lives in Arpora, loves Goa because she doesn’t have to be part of any scene. Goa, she says, allows you to live in your own bubble. Just being here is an artistic experience, she adds, because you become part of the beautiful landscape. “Most people see India in terms of its rich and influential history, its Gods and devotion, Bollywood movies, or its awakening as an economic giant. However, there is so much more about the complex and dynamic India of today. The depth of this country, the contradictions of its society, the dreams and hopes of its people, and its energy and passion toward the future.” “I am interested in those ideas that extend us out and change the reality of the sense of territory that we as humans have,” says the French-born Yahel who has studied Sanskrit in Varanasi and architecture in Paris, Rome and Tokyo. Says she of her approach, “I came to the installation works wanting to bring the light of day into a landscape. I did not want to make a mark on the surface of the earth. I wanted to employ sunlight, moonlight and starlight to empower a work of art. Instead of competing with the sunset, I wanted to use it, to take it in.” Fortunately for Yahel and all the other creative souls who have flocked here, it’s hard to beat Goa for inspirational sunsets. 

t’s no secret that if you can afford it, world-class education is available in India. But what about if you can’t? “Our English and Maths is really bad. If the foundation of our studies is weak at this initial stage, how will we strengthen it in the future?” asks Manisha, a student whose education has been put on hold because of the lack of teachers in her school. For most Indians, getting access to education remains an elusive dream. The further one travels into the interiors of the country, the more severe the problem gets—schools that are too far to walk to; financial constraints; teacher shortages are just some of the obstacles they face. In a recent campaign launched by Video Volunteers, an international community media organisation, 206 trained community correspondents will document the problems their communities face trying to get access to proper education facilities. Thousands of students like Manisha from across the country will reveal on camera the ground reality of education in India. These voices are the real faces behind the statistic that there are 8 million children out of school in India. 2013 marks the deadline set to meet all the norms set forth in the Right to Education Act that envisioned equitable, quality education to every child in India. Though one of the most progressive education laws in the world, it has missed many of its goals. Are schools easy to get to? Is the student-teacher ratio correct? Are there toilets and drinking water in the schools? Are the School Monitoring Committees functioning properly? These, and more are some of the questions they are asking. This teaser for the campaign sets out the issues. These videos will form the base of the campaign “Pass Ya Fail”, an audit of achievements and shortcomings of the RTE Act. In the first phase of the project, 100 videos from 100 districts across India will be produced. Community Correspondents will bring you information from hundreds of schools, interviewing numerous teachers parents and children – seeing how these schools measure up to the thirteen key provisions guaranteed by this Act. The campaign comes at a crucial juncture as India is getting set for a general election in 2014. As young India will come out to vote, this campaign will hold accountable policy makers who have promised to give every child of India the right to education through this Act. Already documented, is a collection of over eighty videos (and counting), compelling evidence that the education system in India is far from adequate. The RTE Forum’s stock-taking report found that only 8% of schools conform

to the standards set out by the act. The shortage of teachers is one of the most urgent concerns that need to be tackled. VV’s Community Correspondents have documented many cases where 1 or 2 dedicated teachers try to run a school but end up being over worked and frustrated. Other basic infrastructure like drinking water and separate toilets for boys and girls are also absent. These two are important factors in retaining students in school. For girls especially, the absence of separate clean toilets presents a hurdle in coming to school.

There are also grim revelations from the 2013 Annual Status of Education Report which states that the percentage of children in Government schools who can identify numbers up to 100 has reduced to 50% from the 70% it was four years ago. This decrease in quality has been largely attributed to the Right to Education (RTE) and Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) policies that have been implemented since 2010. In the course of the campaign, Community Correspondents will go deep into particular stories and case studies, to help understand why the act has worked or not worked in a particular area. And most crucially, they will use the videos to bring an impact in individual cases at the block or district level where the act has not been implemented properly. In the past Video Volunteers’ Correspondents have succeeded in redressing RTE violations. Through this video audit, Video Volunteers will raise the issues and concerns on the ground backed by visual evidence. They hope that in the course of the year-long campaign, organisations working on education and the government itself will take note of

these and ensure that the RTE Act, as envisioned is actually implemented. group show titled ‘Contemplativeness’ provoked a great deal of contemplation when it debuted at the Kala Academy in Panjim. The works of six artists revealed engagement with reality, personal sensations, and a little fantasy and mythology extended in various mediums.

Kuleep Karegaonkar lives in Mumbai, and coming from a farmer family, his inspiration is growing cotton, in various stages of bloom. Instead of using a brush, his tool is cottonwool wrapped around a stick, as was done in the village to paint thresholds. Warm colours spread nostalgic recollections, as the landscape coexists with the effects and textures of the surface. The colourful depiction moves to line drawings in black and white. “These are caricatures of the labour in the fields”, he says. Mallikarjun Katke is from Karnataka and lives in Mumbai. He blends pigments and bold

abstract firmness with calligraphy, breaking up the canvas in an expressive overlay of slated panels. “It is a process of construction represented in deconstruction, and I depict the experiences of struggles in life.” There’s an intriguing confluence of mythology, breaking uniformity and monotony of space in asymmetric frames, in oil on canvas.

Basudev Ghosh, a painter from Kolkata, displays a mélange of vivacity and expression. His semi-abstract works are influenced by the short stories of Hemmingway and Kafka, and by Charlie Chaplin. The ink, pencil and watercolour span a richness of cross fertilization depicting war, social scenarios and different lifestyles of the evolving techno world. Ranjit Singh lives in Delhi, and he has been actively involved with NGO’s fighting against child labour. He has previously done a series on the children he interacts with. In his depictions of various social scenarios, the intensity of his compositions come out in his woodcuts, which project humanity, mythology, mananimal configuration, and a traverse play of lines, with a graphic objectiveness. Talking about the art scenario in Baroda, he mentioned the patronage of art connoisseurs and industrial houses which provide a studio to work in for the young graduates of the Art College. These artists have a platform, and though they come from other cities in the country, many settle down in Baroda. There are art shows, workshops, and other artrelated activities going on through the year, giving local artists an opportunity to sell their works. N. Kanihaiya, who lives in Goa, says that “For me art is an ongoing process.” Who can doubt that paintings reflect the artist’s psyche? This is evident in his

work projecting anguish and pain. His acrylic paintings in a bright pallet are particularly noteworthy. One sculpture is of a man’s face with injection syringes framing the head, which is replicated in a painting of this sculpture. There were smaller formats of his palm and finger prints, a chair with nails on the seat, all forming a testament to disquieting moments in his life.

This group of artists has exhibited together for five years in cities around India, and this was their first show in Goa, which we were told was not monetarily lucrative. Kartiki, an interior decorator by profession who curated the show, says, “The need today is to use visual art to address local issues of the communities.” The collection is clearly evocative, with consummate skills in illustrative textures and bright planes, without depending too heavily on aesthetic precedents. Exhibits such as this one clearly enrich the art scene in Goa, and are highly welcome.

The Goa Art and Literary Festival 2013 By Sheela Jaywant

hen I first started attending the annual ‘LitFest’ four years ago, my first reaction was ‘what the heck is that?’ I mean in a film festival one sees films. Surely one can’t sit reading books at a LitFest, I thought (the scene in my head was highly anti-social!). It didn’t take long, however, for me to realize it was a noteworthy event. Volunteer driven, with a small budget, it had managed to get to Goa some impressive names: Mridula Garg and Gulzar, for example. Over three days, I heard them talk about their books, and also discuss matters of national and cultural interest. Of interest to me was the fact that I could sit and chat with the authors in the lawns, under the benign December sun, on topics like “is the short story really a form of literature”? After Alice Munro’s Nobel, the answer is clearly ‘yes’. Last year, the GALF as the Goa Art and Literary Festival has come to be known, clashed with events at the university and the audience number was less than expected. Good for those like me who like informal chats with writers, painters and performers. 2012 was the first time in the country that a Kashmiri writers’ contingent had been invited to another state. I was able to interact with people who had lived through years of terrible hardship. Reading about their troubles in the newspapers was very different from asking them questions face to face. The extempore play and theatre workshop run by Kolkata’s Tathagat was another exciting event as was the meeting with an ex IAS author from Arunachal. This, I reckoned is the best form of armchair travel. There were more treats: a poetry recital at sunset at Raj Bhavan, followed by a traditional folk dance-drama from Kashmir. And, as had happened the year

Robust crowd, fascinating sessions and a memorable experience before, GALF had ended with a music program by Lou Majaw, popularly known as the Bob Dylan of the North East. In his sixties, with waist-length white hair and a twenty-year-old athlete’s body, he sang and strummed his guitar with passion, the dark Zuari flowing below and behind him and the starlit sky above. His ‘uniform’ was a very short, fray-edged denim shorts, sleeveless vest and jacket. Friends from other states who attended the GALF last year almost decided to settle here, so attractive was the festival at the International Centre at Dona Paula. Non-commercial, intimate, stimulating. This year, I marked the dates on my calendar well in advance. The registration, as always, was free and optional. For an event so valuable, a small fee could be charged and, going by the number of attendees this year, registration should be compulsory. Yes, fortunately for the organizers, the attendance this year was robust. On 4th December, at the Institute Menezes Braganza, Maria Aurora Couto launched “Filomena’s Journeys: A Portrait of a Marriage, a Family and a Culture”.

There were more than twenty books launched over four days. Am hoping the ICG library has bought them all because I couldn’t buy them all. On the next day, at the formal inauguration at the Kala Academy, there was the unavoidable lot of speeches. More books were launched: by authors Lord Meghnad Desai, Meera Kosambi and Damodar Mauzo. There was a dance performance by the famous Uttar Kamalabari Satra troupe from the largest river island in the world, the Brahmaputra’s Majuli island. I told you I armchair travelled sitting right here in Goa. Then there was a rather ordinary Konkani play. We have the talent, the skill, the art. We should put our best foot forward at times like these. Sigh. Meena Kandaswamy read her poetry with passion. That’s the only way to read her verse (shocking to some, exciting to others). Also discussed was Nandita Haksar’s “Travels Through the Chicken’s Neck”, which is likely to be read by anyone interested in Nagaland and its sister states. She has made Goa her home. Bina Ramani, whose daughter Malini’s shop Dreamscapes is right down the road from the Streets’ office, earned fame through her difficult days as witness to Jessica Lal’s murder. She penned her experiences in jail and in dealing with the mighty monsters of Power in Delhi in “Bird in a Banyan Tree”. Sikkim’s Prajwal Parajuly had come here but a few months ago to launch his award-winning “A Gorkha’s Daughter”; this time he was here with his novel, “Land Where I Flee”. I’d grown up on a literary diet of short stories by Shashi Deshpande. Seeing her, meeting her, made me feel like a student again. She told us of her journey: how, where, when, why, did she write and about whom. I wish the invited, outside authors had been given as much time as was given for the launch of “Taalgudi,

Poet Arvind Krishna Mehrotra Ghusmat and Clear Cut”. Jose Lourenco, as always quiet and modest, didn’t tell people that the story of the film “Zor” was his. Goans are extremes. The ones who are modest are overtly so and the others…. Let me move on to the next para. The cookery books were launched appropriately at a fancy dinner at a fancy hotel. Samar Halarnkar’s “A Married Man’s Guide to Creative Cooking” won’t need much marketing to sell out. The talks about life, language, politics and troubles were engaging. From Assam to Kashmir to Pakistan to Dalits in Tamil Nadu, one got to ask questions to people who were from there. Claude and Norma Alvares’ son, Rahul, told us how long each picture took in his “Birds of Goa”. George Menezes’ “The Naked Liberal” was a collection of his hard-hitting, satirical essays. On the 7th, Mandela died. Raj Bhavan couldn’t host the evening function there as it did last year. But the poetry readings on the ICG lawns, under Goa’s winter sky were only marginally less charming. I’m going to watch out for Konkani poet Rajay Pawar’s work. It has humour, is earthy and hard-hitting. Patricia Sethi, an ex chief correspondent of Newsweek, launched Ramesh Chauhan’s biography, aptly titled: “Thunder Unbottled: From Thums Up to Bisleri”. Most people went home laden with author-signed mint-fresh books, pleased that the festive season will give them the opportunity to spend their afternoons and late nights more fruitfully than watching tear-jerking serials on television. Compared to Jaipur, Trivandrum and Mumbai, GALF is small, without glitter, without tamasha. That’s what makes it charming and special. Looking forward to the fifth edition next year. 

A Diva’s Guide to Paris “

Start at the top of the food chain - Paris is touted to be the birthplace of haute cuisine, so book yourself for an evening of unabashed gastronomic indulgence at one of its seventy-odd Michelinstar establishments. From Le Meurice to Pierre Gagnaire, you’ll be spoilt for choice. After you’ve blown a hole in your pocket, eat like the Parisians do: at quaint neighbourhood bistros where you can tuck into lip-smacking fare at reasonable prices. When is the best time to visit Paris? Summer is widely touted the most popular time to visit Paris. As for me, I prefer the time ‘just after’ summer. The weather is still beautiful and you can enjoy the beauty of Paris without the hordes of tourists and better prices for hotels and flights. What if I don’t know French? Parisians are notorious for their unwillingness to speak English. However, I barely found a soul or two who couldn’t speak English (or wouldn’t). That said, it’s a good idea to carry around a French phrase book. How do I get around the city? Walking/cycling is the most popular way to get around Paris. Pick up a Metro Parisien when you land in the city. Make sure you exchange at least some of your currency into euros. Paris banks charge ridiculously high fees for cash withdrawals from foreign cards and they do not offer the best exchange rates either. What is the weather like? Paris experiences light showers throughout the year. Though they are not much more than drizzles, it is always prudent to carry a small umbrella with you at all times.

Nadia GunadisuryaPhotographer originally from Indonesia, and a former hotelier who quit her job to turn full-time housewife, Nadia, who has been living in Goa for the last three years, happened to come across these nomadic women and couldn’t rest until she had captured them in her frames. Her recently held exhibition, aptly titled ‘Raw’ at Gallery Gitanjali in Panjim was made up of 38 pictures that truly represented the beauty of these ladies who work long hours in the sun to feed their families.

About Child’s Play India Child’s Play India Foundation (www. childsplayindia.org) is a music charity that seeks to instill positive values and provide social empowerment to India’s disadvantaged children through the teaching of classical music to the highest possible standard. It is inspired by the El Sistema music phenomenon which began in Latin America in the 1970s and is sweeping across the world. Musical Performances There will be a number of musical performances reflecting different genres. One of the highlights will happen on Sunday, Dec. 22, when Ashley do Rego and Elvina Fernandes will perform. Ashley plays violin and Elvina the viola – and the duo are without a doubt among the best in their field in all of India.
