et ready to rock, Goa! Internationally acclaimed DJ Hamza will be back in our sunny state this week, and this time he’s performing with Rajasthani percussionist Latif Khan. When it comes to unusual, soul-stirring musical entertainment, it’s hard to beat this DJ/Percussionist duo playing an extraordinary blend of House, Tech House, East-West Fusion and World Music. In association with Goa Streets, Hamza & Latif will be wowing audiences at the Little Door in Baga on Thursday, March 6 and at Club Tito’s South Goa, at the Radisson Blu Resort on Cavelossim Beach on Saturday, March 8. Both gigs start at 8 pm, and they are not to be missed! Between the two of them, Hamza and Latif have performed in Germany, the U.S., Portugal, Switzerland, England, France and South Korea, among other destinations. Both artists are making a big splash in the international music scene, and we’re privileged to have them perform for us right here in Goa. Of course it’s not just a performance. Hailing from New Delhi, DJ Hamza has attained a reputation as a pioneer of the house scene in India and one of the more innovative and exciting up-and-coming producers today. Latif Khan, from Rajasthan, has music in his blood, belonging to the family of the Manganiyar. He plays a wooden instrument called the “morchang” that looks like a mouth organ and sounds like a didgeridoo, in addition to many percussion instruments. He started his musical career at the age of 15, and his ancestors have been playing the morchang for generations. A disciple of the famed Jasu Khan, Latif has played all around the world, and his unique combination of house music and Rajasthani percussive instruments, with DJ Hamza behind the console, is turning a lot of heads. 6 The Lowdown The Lowdown Welcome to the Goa Streets Carnival edition!

reputable yoga instructor screams at her close friend for disrupting her Yoga Nidra (deep relaxation time). Another girl wakes at 6 am to attend Osho active meditation only to return home and blast her boyfriend for not washing a mug. To be a yoga instructor or Osho meditator most certainly doesn’t require one to be perfect. In fact, in my last article I tried to make clear that as one deepens in their meditation, one may act in ways that may not always fit in to social norms. That said, I still made the point that as you align yourself with the way (tao), the fruits of the spirit such as kindness and love will flow through you, not as any sort of goal but as an overflow of what is naturally within. We live in a world now where many in the west are flocking to eastern ideas. There are a myriad of yoga and meditation schools opening everywhere. The question must be asked, Can these techniques bring about the change that people really need in their life? I opened this article with a couple of examples to illustrate the reality of committed spiritual seekers who seem on some level, unable to bring their spiritual experiences to certain aspects of every day life. I know of people very close to me, who also meditate but are still terribly unhappy in their lives. I have often wondered where the role of psychotherapy role lies in respect to religion and philosophy. I believe that, for some of us at least, working through our own psychological demons is necessary before the door to deeper spiritual pursuits can truly be opened. Author Ken Wilber talks about different therapies and techniques for different levels of consciousness. His book ‘No Boundary’ documents an elaborate system of spiritual and emotional development and is worth the read. Perhaps the greatest confusion is in distinguishing between emotional and spiritual aspects of consciousness. Essentially we are

living in a world of unintentional spiritual cheating. A world where people are trying to walk before they can crawl. People are flocking to all kinds of self help books, gurus, retreats and so forth. Yet many, unknowingly, carry all sorts of emotional baggage with them. To make matters worse, rather than transcending their issues, they end up suppressing them. Such sublimation appears sooner or later as emotional dysfunction which may not be plain for them to see but is often obvious to others. What increases such suppression is the unconscious reality that another effort to save oneself has failed. This all may seem very judgmental so I shall turn to myself to help illustrate my point. I was a Church Minister some years ago and quite successful, too. My duties included preaching, teaching, baptising, evangelising, counselling, training other leaders and everything else that comes with the job. Essentially, through my new confidence in the Bible, I lived to save others without realising the magnitude of my own lostness (Never underestimate one’s ability to deceive oneself, I say). It was psychotherapy that enabled a genuine rebirth rather than the metaphorical one I had through adult baptism. In all the years of church, it was on the therapist’s couch that I really faced my demons. But it did not end there. As I became aware of the my own psychological issues, psychotherapy had done its work. Though still working through my problems, I was so much more ready for a more genuine spiritual path. There was an agility and freshness that allowed me to pursue spiritual matters with more vigour and better understanding. Certain religious ideas were no longer triggers and disguises for my emotional issues but carried with them much deeper meanings for me. I will always remember Ken WIlber’s point when he confidently states that all religious texts carry with them exoteric and esoteric meaning. That is, a superficial meaning that appeals to the masses and a hidden meaning that is seen by a few. I hold psychotherapy responsible for deepening my spiritual journey and in some ways starting it, while making me appear to some religious folk as a blasphemer. I would like to conclude with modern zen meditation master and psychotherapist Barry Magid’s honest admission that even some of his students get stuck on the path requiring special emotional attention through therapy. The same goes for our story on the taxi blowup, which, in the end, is as much about the need for all to adjust to the state’s rapidly changing tourism reality than the particular grievances of any single party. “

We cook our dal for twelve hours and the raan tonight has been cooked for sixteen,” says Money Wadhwa with a warm chuckle. Indian Jones has been running for six months and I can see that Money Wadhwa is enjoying every bit of it. Tonight, I have the privilege of having dinner with him and we are going to be eating some of his favourite food. A big culinary aficionado, Money has been all over Goa in his journey for delicious food. He tells me that he missed the North Indian style of food and he and his wife were never completely satisfied with what they encountered as posers for ‘North Indian’ cuisine. The restaurant is spread over five levels based on a terrace field like structure. The uppermost tier is a party lounge that can accommodate around three hundred people. A level below can seat a conference or a party of a more personal nature. The dining area is set in a beautiful sit-out at the front of a lovely Portuguese villa. It overlooks the fields of Saligao, with a thick canopy of trees and foliage. One can watch the evening descend and dine under a star studded sky. There is a shelf of books and Money tells me that he has guests who come here just to take pleasure in reading on endless cups of chai and snacks. Money, with his larger-than-life presence, welcomes all to his restaurant. The place draws couples, groups of friends, family and even an occasional load of bus troopers who happen to be passing Indian Jones. Money loves interacting with his

guests and I have a feeling that I won’t be surprised if he knows everyone who comes there personally. Some book their tables from Panjim and pay regular visits to Indian Jones. It’s wonderful to hear that there is a love for this kind of Mughlai and North Indian food that makes people follow their noses for miles. “We plan to have a lot more coming up,” Money looks excited with the new festivities that he is planning. A Sufi festival and a Punjabi festival are all set to rock Indian Jones. I can imagine the ambience and I am sure it’ll be a perfect touch to the yummy food served here. Let’s finally get down to the essence of Indian Jones, its mouth-watering food. I have often passed by Indian Jones with a thought of going in to have the dal makhani with butter naan. When I finally get there, I begin with a delightful “welcome drink”. A very long slender tulip holds in it a concoction of jaljeera, which is an aperitif and it also has great medicinal value along with being a wonderful digestive. This is followed with a course of starters. We have a wide variety to choose from the vegetarian, so we get ourselves a platter consisting of paneer tikka, hara matar kebab, malai broccoli and dhai ka galauti. From the non-vegetarian section we have the reshmi kebab and mutton ka galauti. I was having the galauti for the first time and learned the finer art of eating it. The meat is really soft and minced so when one slices it, it breaks very easily and has to be supported underneath with a thin hard bread, which prevents the galauti from crumbling. My favourite from the starters was the malai broccoli. It was tender, creamy and crunchy at the same time. A perfect harmonizing of western and eastern cuisine. We washed our starters down with a one-litre Mojito and a Virgin Pina Colada. I really have to say that Indian Jones has some of the most awesome cocktails you

can have here in Goa. The guy who makes it is down from Delhi and he’s a cool guy who serves you exquisitely smooth cocktails. The Pina Colada smelled terrific and tasted just as good. I highly recommend it! We tried a Cosmopolitan, too, to see if the reputation would hold and behold this was just as lip smacking. We finished off our dinner with a mutton raan and of course the dal makhani. To add a bit about the mutton raan, it is seasoned for 24 hours before being cooked for another sixteen, and then served with flames on your table. The chefs emerge from the kitchen to participate in this elaborate ceremony. Money tells me they get all dressed up for the occasion, adding a touch of exclusivity to the famous mutton raan. There was the usual naan and roti to accompany the meal with a selection of the missi roti as well. The meal ended with a delightful dessert which had to be hands down the malai kulfi. If you are looking for an experience that is truly North Indian in the heart of Goa then head straight for Indian Jones. As a friend put it, “It’s a place with a Goan sussegado attitude serving delicious North Indian food”. And yes, when you do happen to be there ask Mr. Money about his hat collection. He’s got a hat from every part of the world he’s gone to. To quote the original Indiana Jones, “It’s a long story. Is the Death Knell Ringing for Tehelka and ThinkFest? With Tarun Tejpal in jail for three months, his media empire flounders By Goa Streets

amiliar with the Kübler-Ross model of the stages of grief? Something similar is happening at Tehelka in varying degrees - first shock, then denial, anger, depression and slowly, acceptance. All of Tehelka may not yet have completed the whole cycle, and some may skip stages of the process, but the underlying message is clear - death is a very real possibility, even if it is a prolonged one. “We’ve been told that the normal days by which we are due to receive our salaries are no longer valid,” a current employee of Tehelka said on the condition of anonymity (in the interest of remaining an employee, for now). These days the debate over whether Tehelka founder Tarun Tejpal actually sexually assaulted the young woman assigned to escort movie star Robert D’Niro at last year’s Think Fest, seems almost beside the point in the newsrooms and back offices of the once ground-breaking media outlet. Employees interviewed for this article affirmed that with Tejpal jailed in Goa for the past three months, and with Managing Editor Shoma Chaudhury having resigned, the weekly news magazine has lost its investigative edge, not to mention its financial footing (a reality that’s rendered even more noteworthy by the upcoming election season). And it’s anybody’s guess whether this year’s Think Fest, India’s premier intellectual event, will take place. There’s something bigger than Tejpal on the minds of the Tehelka staff – the loss of a certain mojo, of the pride in belonging to an enterprise that felt like a virtuous island in a sea of graft. In the end, the grief is for that as much as anything else. “At that time, Tehelka was ‘the thing’,” a former employee recounts. “People came there to work only because of the

ideal that the paper promised,” he said, adding that some journalists came on lower salaries and didn’t mind doing stories on shoestring budgets, working late, and eating and sleeping little. They drew inspiration and contentment from their work. “Almost everyone is looking out [for other opportunities],” he said. By all accounts, Tehelka – owned by Anant Media Pvt Ltd – is having trouble paying its bills. In recent times, the only profitable part of Tehelka has been Think Fest, and now even that event is up on the air. (Tarun Tejpal is a minority owner of Anant Media, with KD Singh’s Royal Building and Infrastructure holding a 65 percent share, but the jailed journalist does own most of ThinkWorks, which puts on Think Fest). “The magazine has been having a tough time getting ads. Some of the advertising staff have also been asked to leave,” said one senior Tehelka journalist, adding that because ThinkWorks is owned by Tejpal (with his sister Neena and Shoma Chaudhury holding minority stakes), “nobody will really know anything unless the three of them speak about it or reveal some kind of plans”. To be sure, much of Tehelka’s and Think Fest’s future is likely to rest on what happens to Tejpal himself. His accuser, a young Tehelka employee, said he sexually assaulted her in an elevator twice during Think Fest last November after she completed a day escorting Robert D’Niro around Goa. She said Tejpal forcefully inserted a finger into her private parts – which under India’s new rape law qualifies as rape. Tejpal has so far been denied bail, and his trial, which could take up to two months, is expected to start in March. Immediately after the rape allegations emerged, several senior journalists quit the journal in protest. This beside the victim herself and Shoma, who quit after facing allegations of trying to hush up the case. Tarun and Shoma’s shadows still loom large in the Delhi offices, but at Tehelka’s operations away from the centre, there’s still quite a bit of hope. “There is immense respect for Tehelka. Everyone is glad that the mag has survived. We are absolutely fine in terms of work without Tarun and Shoma. But we do miss their editorial direction and

wisdom,” said a Tehelka reporter working outside of Delhi, who also spoke on condition of anonymity. Around the Tehelka empire, groups of journalists have huddled together to discuss their future. Some are clinging to the hope that things can still be salvaged, and that Tehelka can reclaim its former status as a media outlet pushing the envelope of investigative and public service journalism. Some have consciously decided to stay on simply because of the effort they have put in to keeping the magazine – and the idea it represents – alive. It’s hard to deny that without Tejpal and Shoma steering the course, Tehelka’s role as India’s premier journalistic watchdog is already all but finished. Considering the country’s current levels of corruption, that’s as sad as any other aspect of the case. For his part, Tejpal has pledged to come back and has even promised to write a book once he is out. Having been behind bars on charges that carry a minimum of seven years imprisonment if he is convicted, he is still trying to eke out bail. Statements from the Tehelka management on the future of the magazine have been non existent. The website does carry a section containing the statements made by the managing editor, including her note of resignation. Robert de Niro has been dragged into the controversy, as the alleged crimes took place to and from visits to his hotel room. The Goa Police have been

trying to reach him, even sending him a questionnaire, but have received no response. Tejpal isn’t without his share of friends. Eminent journalist BG Verghese, through an article in The Indian Express in early December, called the entire drama a media witch-hunt. Verghese referred to a “pinch of malice” in the media coverage and said Tejpal was “pilloried as a monster, an egotistical power-seeker, a poor paymaster though a secret tycoon-in-themaking, and a political and social climber. His journalism has been questioned by some as immoral, magisterial and politically motivated muckraking by entrapment rather than investigation”. However, others are equally critical of him. The women’s rights lawyer Vrinda Grover wrote a scathing column in Outlook. “The new law just clarified what consent meant. It said there has to be an unequivocal, voluntary agreement by word or gesture. In the case of Tarun Tejpal, the victim is saying to him, ‘Don’t do it, stop it’. How can that message not go across? If you continue to do it, then I’m sorry, it’s a crime.” Of course, none of that answers the question, did he do what she said he did? That’s for a court to decide. In the meantime, Tejpal has little hope of seeing freedom any time soon. And aside from the travails of Tejpal, his accuser and the entire Tehelka and Think Fest venture, the other big loser in the case is the cause of watchdog journalism in India. 

k, so it’s not exactly Brazil. Here we have more or less respectably dressed Goan ladies hot-stepping with the lads through the streets of Panjim instead of the near-naked samba dancers who parade through Rio de Janeiro. To say the 250,000 tourists expected this year in Goa for Carnival 2014 will go away disappointed would, however, not be correct, because except for the nonexistent Brazilian-style samba dancers, there’s going to be plenty of fun and frolic in this age-old pre-Lent festival of pagan origins. Before we get to that, allow me a short historical aside about that Brazilian-like flesh quotient. Truth be told, the Goa carnival has considerably toned it down over the years, with oldtime revelers recalling the heady 1970’s and early 1980’s when exhibitionist hippies would loll around naked or near-naked on Calangute and Anjuna beaches, then turn up for the carnival parade and join some of the floats, some of them in barely-there costumes. Yes, some of them even used to dress like the Brazilian samba dancers. Those were the years. This year they’re going to attempt to revive some of that old spirit, even if it’s without the fortuitous flesh and the samba babes. What WILL be there, though, is the Samba Square, right in the heart of Panjim in the Municipal Garden near the Panjim church. “The ‘Samba Square People’s Carnaval’ is our attempt to bring out the flavor of samba which is the music associated with carnival,” says Richard Dias, co-ordinator of the Samba Square. “It is an attempt to revive the old spirit of carnival which is about the participation of the residents of Panjim and the locals of Goa, and to make the carnival once again a people’s festival. It’s focused on locals and for families to come together and have fun.”

Let the Samba - and the Party - Begin! For the four days of festivities which start on Fat Saturday, March 1, there will be many of Goa’s top bands playing, food stalls and other fun events at the Samba Square, mostly in the evenings, though there will also be music during the day. The official launch of this year’s carnival will be on Friday, February 28, with the inauguration of the food and cultural festival. This year, however, the Brazilian dancers who were part of the Goa carnival in the last few years, won’t be there. According to Panjim mayor Surendra Furtado, a funds crunch is the reason. This year the float parade in Panjim will have around 100 floats on different themes, including some commercial floats promoting different products and brands. The government has been promoting the carnival in novel ways. This year they have a tie-up with the makers of the Bollywood movie ‘Youngistaan’ which has promoted the Goa carnival, food and cultural festival as a part of their film promotions. Its star cast Jackky Bhagnani and Neha Sharma will also be a part of the Panjim carnival parade along with the King Momo lead float. Bollywood equals glamour. This year Joel D’Souza, a 37-year-old engineer, is going to be King Momo. He says he wants the youth of Goa to participate in the carnival in a big way. It’s King Momo who starts the festivities by reading his decree

permitting the people to have unlimited fun and frolic. King Momo symbolically rules Goa for the four days of carnival. Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar said this year’s event will be one of the most colourful and vibrant editions of the carnival, and is Goa’s tribute to its diverse population and heritage. The aim, he said, is to spread a message of peace, unity and harmony. He even visited and held events in Mumbai and Bangalore to announce this year’s festival. “The Goa carnival is the highlight of our annual calendar and we want to ensure that this will be an unforgettable experience for locals as well as visitors to the state. Goa is a place that induces a contagious celebratory spirit, right from weddings to festivals everything here is celebrated with pomp and fervor,” he said. The food and cultural festival will highlight the cuisine and rich legacy of Goa. There will be an all Goa cooking competition with sponsored prizes that will be judged by a celebrity chef. The cooking competition will promote local cuisine and showcase the same to visiting tourists. The winning recipe will be displayed on Goa Tourism’s website and other social media. Agnee, a Indian rock band, and other artists like Kailash Kher, Rabbi Shergill, Raghu Dixit Project and Sona Mahapatra will be performing at the festival. A grand fashion show and a fire display is also included. This year’s edition will also feature street performances by musicians at various vantage points across Panjim city, a King Momo contest, and an increase in prize money from Rs 3.7 lakh to Rs 5 lakh for

the best float. The floats have traditionally been the biggest attraction of Goa’s carnival celebrations. The bigger floats have at least a hundred participants, with two rows of boys and girls dancing choreographed sequences with loud thumping music. A popular theme is of fishermen with giant mock-ups of different fish and the boys and girls in traditional outfits. Another popular theme is the Portuguese-Latin look, with the boys and girls in Iberian costumes grooving to some funky Latino music. The ‘Green Goa’ theme has also been popular. After the floats parade on Saturday, various clubs and nightspots will be holding their ‘Fat Saturday’ dances and parties. This year one of the biggest events will be Vijai Sardessai’s ‘Fatorda Carnival Bash’ which will feature Bollywood DJ’s Aqeel and DJ A Sen, along with a flea market, fashion show and food stalls. If you really want to get into the spirit of the Goa carnival, you should check-out the traditional dances organised by the Clube Vasco da Gama and Clube Nacional in Panjim. Like with other major Goan festivals, carnival is when people involved in the entertainment scene in Goa are in demand and when all those involved in the tourism industry get into the act. Joaquim Fernandes, a master of ceremonies, says he’ll be compeering a carnival show at Neelam The Grand in Calangute which is only for the resort’s guests. “It’s a carnival party with dancers and music where King Momo and his merry troupe will be visiting,” he says. King Momo will be there at many of the carnival events elsewhere too, like on the special carnival cruise organized by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation on the Santa Monica cruise boat. No, it’s not Brazil. But the Goan version, with its rich traditions rooted in the deepest human cravings for delightful revelry, is good enough for me. 

Can the drivers – and Goa – adapt to a changing tourism universe? By Pedro Menezes

nybody who has used the services of a tourist taxi in Goa might have experienced a variation, though perhaps less extreme, on the following story. Yulia, a svelte young Russian tourist, had taken a taxi from Calangute to Morjim. When taking the taxi, she was told the fare would be Rs 1,000, which she thought was way too high. But she had to get to Morjim to visit her friends. As time was precious, she took the cab. At the end of her journey, when she started to pay, the cabbie demanded Rs 2,000, saying she had to pay the extra amount since her friends were staying in a remote corner of Morjim. Shocked, she refused. The next thing the cabbie gave her a hard slap and told her that if she couldn’t pay the money, she could pay with sex if she liked. Frightened, and with hardly any souls around, she simply paid the extra amount. In recent days, the taxi owners and operators went on strike demanding that the government concede their demands, nearly paralyzing the tourism industry and generally running riot, forcing Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to announce that the government would concede most of their demands. Otherwise, said the taxi owners, they would disrupt this week’s carnival

celebrations which attract lakhs of tourists. The strike turned violent this past week, when around 20 people – five policemen, five journalist and about 10 taxi operators – suffered injuries during street battles in Porvorim pitting lathi-wielding cops against around 300 stone-throwing taxi operators. A number of vehicles were also damaged. This was just the latest in a series of violent incidents involving taxi operators stopping vehicles and roughing up tourists – a significant affront to the tourist-friendly image Goa is striving to project. There’s no doubt the drivers have reason to be upset. Most foreign tourists these days come from Russia, and they’re ferried around in buses run by large tour operators who have no use for local taxis. Car and bike rental businesses have mushroomed, offering cheaper and more convenient transportation alternatives. In April last year taxi union members took strong exception when an MLA said in the Goa Assembly that the taxi operators are a bunch of thieves who are spoiling the image of Goa as a tourist destination. Vasu Arlekar, president of the powerful North Goa Tourist Taxi Owners Association, says, “We’re not thieves, it is the MLAs who are

the thieves. It’s the TTAG (Travel and Tourism Association of Goa) who’re the thieves.” Everyone in the tourist industry has noticed a reduction in the number of high-spending tourists coming to Goa, and Arlekar blamed this on members of the TTAG who charge exorbitant room tariffs during the peak season. “Why don’t they charge a uniform tariff for the whole year? Why are they only asking us to put meters and charge uniform rates all through the year? Because they charge exorbitant rates during the peak season people have stopped coming to Goa, not because of the taxi drivers.” Vinayak Nanoskar, general secretary of the taxi association, said, “There are thousands of taxi owners and drivers in Goa. Out of that maybe there will be a few bad elements. That does not mean you can call all of us cheats. We too work hard and earn our money, we also have our self-respect.” Steve Sequeira, a Goan from Delhi who uses the taxis frequently, doesn’t think there’s any excuse for the recent behavior of the taxi providers. He says, “The taxi drivers give a wrong image to people at large … Tourists have a fear of taxi operators in Goa.” While the government has made sporadic attempts in the past to bring

about some order in the tourist taxi business, it is market developments which have given the taxi operators something of a rude awakening. One factor was the growth of the rent-a-bike and rent-a-car business which gave tourists an alternative to hiring the taxis. Another factor is the rise in the number of tour buses which bring in tourists, especially from Russia, from the airports/ railway stations to the resorts and also ferry them on sight-seeing trips. This isn’t the first time the operators are resisting challenges to their hold on the tourist transport business. They demanded and got the government to put a moratorium on rent-a-bike operators two years ago (meaning no new licenses have been granted, with only existing ones in effect), and now want a halt to rent-a-car operations too. Vasu Arlekar says, “Nowadays tourists who come to Goa pick up a rental car at the airport or railway station itself, drive all over Goa for some days and go back. Where will we get business? People with huge amounts of money are buying 200 cars at a time and renting them out.” Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, who has been backing the taxi owners, says, “These kinds of car rental services are not meant for small states like Goa. One person buys 50 cars and rents them out; this way only one family is making huge amounts of money. But 50 taxi owners with one car each can feed 50 families.” There are other issues too, some of which may be sorted out during the current series of meetings between the government and the taxi owners. For example, technically the taxi owners are supposed to operate their taxis from home; tourist taxis cannot be parked along roads to solicit customers. Says Arlekar, “The government asks us to give affidavits that we would be operating our taxis from home – will we get any business if we sit at home and wait for customers?” The government has now agreed to waive off this condition, though in practice it was not enforced anyway. Which has of course led to another problem: where do they park their taxis? Says taxi operator Ravindra Vengurlekar, “Earlier, new hotel projects would make a provision for parking of some tourist taxis in their property and those taxis would be ‘attached’ to those hotels and get some business, but nowadays the new hotels are not making any parking provisions in front of their hotels.” There are many other issues, the biggest one being the ‘high’ fares charged by the taxi owners. But with the Lok Sabha elections coming round soon and the ‘local’ taxi drivers being an important vote bank, the government this week gave the impression that it has conceded most of their demands. Cleverly, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar qualified all that by saying none of his concessions could be implemented until after the government works out a new elections ‘code of conduct’ in the coming days. Or until the taxi operators take to the streets again. 

he artist George Oommen has explored many wonderful styles and attitudes at his show that previewed at Sunaparanta on 21st February. Many sources inspire him - a situation, landscape, a figure. However, it’s when an image stays with him, its verbal expressions rooted in his mind’s eye, that it gets depicted in a vivid colour pallet of synchronized abstraction. Oommen was born in Munnar, Kerala. Some of his inspiration comes from his ancestral house on the tiny island of Mankotta, situated on the Spice Coast of Kerala. The quintessential light, the glistening mornings and the unending rain are etched in his memory, his journey back in time reflected in his work’s empirical reality. When he was studying at the Delhi School of Architecture, an aunt who was a painter introduced him to the works of the Bengal School artists Nandalal Bose and Jamini Roy, among others. His studies have also taken him to Harvard University Graduate School of Design and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Boston. Inspired by the colours of Mexico, he also joined the Instituto Allende at San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. He recalls, “I went to Mexico because I had seen the work done there and wanted to take advantage of the turquoise and lemon yellows glistening in the Mexican sun. I painted one painting called ‘Choc ‘, the Mexican rain god, with those colours, but I used sand and sawdust on canvas. The painting took a month to complete. I have been a student all my life”, he asserts. Oommen designed his first studio 24 years ago in a garage of his house in Arlington - a suburb of Boston, Massachusetts. His signature style involves the use of spray guns, with varying size nozzles. Though he says he does not slot him-self to a particular ‘style,’ a certain drip effect charges his work with vitality. The exemplary light, the panoramic depictions of primordial images of radiant intensity, the pockets of colours, the reminiscence of sensual worlds all evoke spirituality in the real world. In the exhibition of about 30 paintings, one in a large format 12’ x 6’, The ‘Visions of Kerala’ series is sure to resonate with Goa. Ooman says, “Early morning is my favourite time of day to

paint, when the waters are still reflecting the vegetation on the banks.” In fact, some of his paintings have been hung inverted in galleries and printed upside down in publications because these mirrored images appear to be so real. The Kanjeevaram series is expressed in tonal gradation, gradually transitioning from one colour hue to another, with sophisticated dexterity. Sacred Places Within You is a discussion of colour and light. “I work in series. Series last with me until the image is resolved, about four to five years, sometimes longer. My paintings over the last decade or so, fall loosely into three categories: a series of largescale landscapes; a series of small-scale expressionist works called Sacred Places Within You; and my most recent series of miniature paintings.” The specific goal of his art changes with each series, but the general objective is always to transfer the image in his mind to the canvas. The viewer experiences the visual energy that he aims to create through the use of layering of paint, a sliver of luminescent paint making for an unusually dense and

dynamic image. “Layering for me is an important devise,” affirms Oommen. The vertical and horizontal use of colour in the abstracts, the harmony and hues of light and shadow are transformed into a malleable form. The surface resounds with various dimensions, depth, momentum and ethereal humanity, affinity and line. The different planes have delightful visual experiences which overlap fantasies and reality in a

meaningful dialogue of life and nature. Listed in the Who’s Who in the World and on the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Boston Architectural Center, he has exhibited in the U.S., France, Spain, Russia and the metros in India. This is his first show in Goa, and he’s been working on these works for two years. He exhibited in Paris this past December at the Grand Palais, and had a show in Madrid on 22nd February, which he did not attend. Talking about urbanization changing

Awareness among the people is the key for change in behaviour.” Goa may be struggling to keep pace with development and urbanization. But there’s one aspect of urbanization – a vibrant local arts scene – that is undoubtedly enriched by exhibits like the one from this son of Kerala. We love designing dreams,” says Ashish Mohnot, explaining the motivation behind his various design ventures in Goa. He and his wife Shaifali Mohnot have now opened SLEEK on NH17 in Porvorim – an extraordinary store featuring some of the most beautifully designed kitchens available in this part of the world. At one point they decided that the best way to bring their business forward was to meet their clients’ needs on an individual basis, catering to personal preferences and taste. So they started tailoring and delivering exclusively to a niche clientele in Goa. But production costs were high with goods being brought in from Jodhpur. So they finally shifted manufacturing to Goa.
