usic runs in Graziella Gonsalves’ genes. “My father would turn on the audio system early in the morning, and I would wake up to beautiful music every morning ever since I was a toddler. I loved the songs he would play. And when I listen to them now, it’s just beautifully nostalgic.” “I owe much credit to my mom, too. She was part of the church choir and would sing in the choir regularly even when she was carrying me. Perhaps some good notes found their way to me,” smiles Graziella. Perhaps it was her parents’ inspiration that helped turn this 27-year-old dynamo into something of a renaissance woman – dancer, singer, linguist and expert in Karate. Is there anything she can’t do? Graziella works as a Portuguese translator and collaborator at the Centro de Língua Portuguesa/Camões in Panjim, having completed her Masters in Portuguese from Goa University last year. She won a number of awards for scoring the highest marks in Portuguese at Goa University. She says, “It has been a privilege to cross paths with poets, writers, artists and renowned personalities from different parts of the world.”
Singer, dance instructor, Portuguese translator and brown belt in Karate She had the privilege of spending four months in Portugal in 2011, and she takes on freelance assignments translating from Portuguese to English and vice-versa. “I am quite the lingua-phile. I have begun learning French. I know that I can find my way around in France, with the little French that I have mastered so far,” says perky Graziella. For the past eight years, she’s has been teaching ballroom dances to teens and adults. “I teach modern Jive, International Cha cha, American waltz, Social Foxtrot,
Salsa, Rumba, Merengue, Bachata.” She teaches dance after work, usually between 5 and 7: 30 pm. That’s in addition to providing assistance at dance workshops conducted by event management companies at fivestar resorts. She recalls a particularly fulfilling moment, when three kids, after having trained with her, auditioned for ‘Dance India Dance.’

As I coax Graziella to spill secrets about her favourite dance, she coyly replies, “Well, it is hard to say! Each dance form has its own essence. It is just a matter of finding your element; the dance form which allows you to let go and project your heart out to the spheres.” She adds, “It is phenomenal how dancing makes me feel formidable; it even inspires poetry. For me, dance is extending music to create a language.” Graziella hopes to one day open a dance academy. She says, “It’s a dream as of now. But I hope to accomplish it someday.” In the past, she has been associated with bands like Sky high, Shades, and Music Mania. She is also a part of the Western Classical Music Choir of Goa University. She sings in Portuguese, Latin, Spanish, and other South American languages, including Quechua, an indigenous language of Peru. “I am versatile when it comes to music and singing. I sing in mezzo-soprano - voice where the vocal range lies between the soprano and the contralto voice types,” comments Graziella. She has participated in Vem Cantar, an annual Portuguese singing competition for several years. Bagging the first place in 2010 and 2012, and the 2nd spot in 2005 and 2013 for Vem Cantar has made her proud. She also bagged the 1st place for Mando Competition of all Higher Secondary Schools across Goa in 2005. That Graziella also happens to an accomplished practitioner of Karate is quite stunning. She was a state champion in junior girls divisions in the late 90s, and earned her brown belt. Who are her role models? “My support and inspiration comes from people who demonstrate kindness, humility, strength of character, excellence and the will to carry on.” Graziella may only be 27, but her words reflect the wisdom of an ‘old soul’. “Take some time to get to know yourself,” she advises. “Stay true to yourself. When needed, learn to say ‘No’ and also learn to accept a ‘No’. Things to be kept in check, forever: rigidity and stupidity. Now, go live!”

Escapade at Destination One
ith drizzling sundowners, a floor-smashing line-up and an all white dress code, Destination One successfully hosted ‘White Sunday’ on the 25th of Jan at Escapade in Calangute. With bass drops and classic mixes by top DJ’s of the state like Navin X Mackie, Rinton, Mr. E, NRush, Ryan Nogar, Usman, Alli Marc and Ross, it goes without saying that Destination One made every guest stomp. Property GM, Mr. Gopi Nair was also dressed in white, partying the night away. A blend of retro and EDM kept the feet of the invitees tapping at all times. The view of the Arabian Sea from the venue as the sun was about to set was just another cherry on top of this well executed extravaganza. It was interesting
to see oldies grooving to the music and occupying the dance floor. It was even more fascinating to witness kids boogieing the best they could to the wild music. Fun has no age restriction whatsoever, to be sure. We’ve got to give it to Destination One for such an inviting gesture as letting parents party without worrying about their kids being home alone. With a bar menu inclusive of delightful tidbits and premium alcohol, the party fetched a tremendous response, with the venue packed as the music softened and the night came to an electrifying end. For all those who missed it, well, tough luck my friends. Destination One is in fact one of the hottest party spots in Goa today. Here’s a glimpse of the party through my lens.

Goa’s Mining Fiasco A Theatre of the Absurd
By Goa Streets
W
hy is the Goa government’s renewal of iron-ore leases, following the lifting of a two-year ban, utterly absurd? For three simple reasons. Those responsible for what the Shah Commission described as the most mind-boggling scam in Goan history – the theft of Rs 35,000 crore – have been granted the leases to renew their digging. The Goan government says it rejected an open, transparent auction for granting mining leases, as demanded by activists and much of the public, in part to avoid drawing in a “mafia”, as if the old players’ unspeakable theft of the public’s patrimony did not constitute the actions of a mafia. Handing the leases right back to the original stakeholders, rather than ensure a quick resumption of an activity upon which tens of thousands of Goans rely, is sure to attract myriad legal challenges and delay the much-needed restart. Yes, this time around the government assures us that a) the total amount of iron ore extracted from Goa’s mines will be capped at 20 million metric tonnes annually and b) state and local taxes of as much as 45 percent, plus an additional 10 percent for a permanent welfare fund, will be levied. While welcome, these measures are irrelevant if there’s no ironore mining at all, which appears likely in light of the government failure to heed the public’s call for an auction. Before it was banned by the Supreme Court 28 months ago, mining was Goa’s biggest industry, employing some 150,000 people both directly and indirectly. It was also responsible for some of the
worst corruption and environmental degradation Goa has ever witnessed. The granting in January of more than 80 mining leases paves the way for stakeholders to approach the Ministry of Environment and Forests for environmental clearances to restart operations. The long process will include public hearings and also require a green light from the Indian Bureau of Mines, charged with ensuring terms, conditions and safeguards are honoured. Even if all those hurdles are cleared, legal challenges to the government’s lease renewals will almost certainly cause indefinite delays. Activist Claude Alvares of the NGO Goa Foundation is likely to be among those leading the
charge against the renewals. He believes relief for the miningdependent public can happen immediately, with no resumption of mining. “The government can start selling already mined ore that is mined and dumped in several locations across the state,” he said, referring to the 750 million tonnes of mining rejects which are today government property. "If one assumes that 20% of these dumps have saleable value, this makes 150 million tonnes, enough to keep the mining going on for three years," Alvares said, adding that this would be good news for truckers and barge owners.
"A trucker isn't concerned whether he's carrying ore, mud or stone, he just wants the trip," Alvares said. It’s not clear if Alvares’ ‘sell-therejects’ plan would actually be workable in practice. And a valid argument can be made that a fair, sustainable, capped and publicly responsible resumption of mining would be good for the people of Goa. The Goa government argued that the state’s High Court effectively banned it from staging an open auction by ordering the resumption of 29 leases held by previous stakeholders. But even if that order were heeded, an auction for dozens of other leases could have been held. Most surprising of all the government’s assertions was its statement in a policy document that an auction “would have involved inviting unknown business interests, who are often referred to as mining mafia.” Unlike the angelic, law-abiding old players, one presumes! The original stakeholders who were thus re-granted their leases to avoid bringing in a “mafia” are said to owe the government Rs 1.19 lakh crore, or Rs 1,190 billion, for the value of the iron ore they exported between November 2007 and September 2012, all of which has been deemed illegal by India’s Supreme Court. One thing these players were able to do with the vast riches they obtained by pocketing illegal profits from this public resource is contribute handsomely to the election campaigns of public officials. Is it any wonder their leases were renewed? It seems the theatre of the absurd knows no end. With hundreds of crores owed to banks in unpaid loans and the squelched livelihoods of tens of thousands of people who depended on mining, the pressure to resume mining is indeed formidable. “I am being inundated with requests from various categories of persons saying that they too need to be bailed out of the mining mess,” Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said recently. “I have done whatever is in my hands for the quickest restart of mining.” Perhaps, but doing so with no reckoning for past outrages is certainly a recipe for further delay.

t’s been said that India is a vegetarian’s paradise. Where else would one find an all-veg restaurant like Sanskruti – the wonderful eatery on the NH17 Highway in Porvorim – that includes such a delightful selection of North Indian, South Indian, Continental and Chinese on one menu? Ideally, you must try the Pav Bhaji, the Special Thali, Dahi Vada, and other delights like Masala Dosa and Vada/Idli Sambhar. When it comes to the quality of food, the accuracy of flavours and quick and friendly service, it’s hard to beat Sanskruti for delicious, affordable vegetarian fare in this part of Goa. The beverage section boasts of fresh fruit juices, milk shakes, mocktails and many other healthy and refreshing drinks. The fruit punch is a catch with a mix
of several fruits, milk, ice cream and cashew nuts. My first order was the Dahi Wada, featuring slightly sweetened yogurt, split and skinned black lentil dumplings (Wada), dried paprika, beetroot and mustard seeds. Definitely a winner. Next up was the Special Thali and trust me, special it was. This massive offering features five main courses along with curd, dessert, pickle, pilaf, papad and 3 pooris. If that doesn’t satiate you, nothing will. The servings include Arhar Dal (boiled pigeon peas seasoned with mustard seeds, asafoetida, and cumin seeds garnished with fresh cilantro), Sukhi Bhaji (literally meaning dry vegetables comprising of beetroot cooked in Indian spices), Bengan Masala (aubergine cooked in a traditional
coconut based goan curry), Pattal Bhaji (tomatoes, potatoes, cauliflower and chickpeas cooked in a mustard gravy), and the highly innovative Bhindi Sambhar (traditional south Indian sambhar with okra). Being allergic to aubergine, I wasn’t able to taste the Bengan Masala. But my girlfriend Tanya did, and she insisted the Bengan Masala and Sukhi Bhaji were the top two offerings on the platter. I was particularly impressed by the fact that the Arhar (Yellow) Dal did not have any oil floating on top, which is often the case in thalis.
One of the most delectable offerings at Sanskruti is undoubtedly the Pav Bhaji. It has a thick, spicy, and buttery potatobased gravy mashed with onions, tomatoes, cauliflower, bottle gourd and traditional Marathi pav bhaji masala served with buns (pav), diced onion and lemon slices. All in all, Sankruti is the place to be if you’re looking for an economical, hygienic and very tasty dining experience. The menu is also loaded with plenty of chaat dishes and tea-time snacks to enjoy if you aren’t really looking for a huge meal. • Ambience: Pleasant Indian diner digs • Food: One of the few places that get ‘Sambhar’ right. Chaat and Special Thali are a must try • Location: Bang on NH-17. Next to two ATM’s if you run out of cash and feel like you need more of this yummy veg fix • Service: Quick as a fox • Cost for two: Believe it or not, two people can walk out COMPLETELY FULL for just 300 bucks! • Contact: 0832-2414400
The American Seafood Festival at Moriscos
Seaside Dining at Vivanta By Taj – Fort Aguada By Goa Streets
I
t’s part of the human condition. The sights, aromas and sounds that surround us inspire certain appetites. With wild waves crashing before you, a breeze flying off the Arabian Sea, cravings for seafood emerge naturally, nurtured by the smell of freshly grilled fish, prawns, scallops and squid wafting from the open-air kitchen. This is the allure of Moriscos, the seaside restaurant at the Vivanta by Taj – Fort Aguada in Sinquerim. The view here is so stunning, the ambience so magical, the sea so awe-inspiring that the truth is dining here would be a worthwhile experience even if the food were just so-so. The fact that it is decidedly not so-so, that Chef Mohit Mishra and his team have turned this outdoor retreat into something of a seafood Mecca for the discerning palate, stands as a testament to the power of culinary and atmospheric transcendence. The American Seafood Festival currently taking place at Moriscos (until Feb. 1) is a good example of how ambience and food can come together to create a truly memorable, and rather extraordinary, experience. The festival’s offerings are simple in concept and presentation, but layered in taste and creativity. The seafood – a selection that includes King and Tiger prawns, scallops, squid, lobster, rock fish, red snapper, tuna, Atlantic salmon, sea bass, and John Dory - is prepared with your choice of cooking: Himalayan
salt block, lava stone grilled, pan seared, steamed, wine poached or mango wood grill. All superb! Accompaniments to the mains include such offerings as shrimp ceviche; pan seared bacon, ham, melon and pesto coleslaw on tortillas; garlic parmesan fries; and polenta cakes. As important as anything else on the table are the sauces and salsas that give depth and meaning to the seafood. These include red pepper chimichurri, romesco, garlic butter chunky tomatoes, olive tapenade and roasted fennel pesto. The combination of the sea and the seafood at Moriscos is sheer bliss. Who wudda thunk that such pleasure could possibly be deepened even further? In fact, the dessert – a pecan pie with coffee ice cream – did just that, capping a delightful evening with some additional culinary magic. Sitting besides those crashing waves and eating this wonderful food, we thanked Chef Mohit and the lucky stars above us.

What’s Hot Right Now? By Goa Streets
W
ith concrete jungles dominating much of India’s urban landscape – and a nationwide shortage of free-spirited, aesthetically pleasing, lung-friendly destinations – it’s no surprise that everyone and their mother wants a slice of Goa. The question is how much of this desire translates into actual money flowing into the state in the form of investments. At times it’s to the chagrin of home-grown Goans, and certainly the state’s infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with development. But there’s no denying the big bucks are arriving. Below, we offer a glimpse of some of the hottest investments and investment opportunities in Goa right now.
Real Estate
Because we live in a nation of 1.3 billion people with a rapidly rising middle class – and all the other factors listed above – it’s a hard to imagine a long-term scenario in which Goa would be a bad real estate investment. That said, it can be safely argued that Goa’s property market, like much of the rest of the country, grew just a bit too fast and furious in the past decade. And now, prices in many areas are no longer rising and may very well go down in the coming months. But real estate is never black and white. Excellent investment opportunities exist, if you
find the right spot at the right price (Remember the Real Estate Golden Rule: You make your money upon purchase!) “Right now it is Dona Paula and Caranzalem that are the most expensive (a result of high demand), while areas like the Kadamba plateau (between Panjim and Old Goa) are still picking up,” says Desh Prabhudesai, President of the Goa chapter of CREDAI (Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India). Prabhudesai points to several bridges coming up – most notably those connecting the islands of Chorao, Divar and Santo Estevão to the mainland. Look for prices in those areas to spike in the nottoo-distant future. Pernem, a once backward taluka of Goa, is also becoming something of a real-estate hotspot thanks to another bridge at Tiracol (not to mention an upcoming golf course in the area). If anyone has any doubt as to the power of such bridges to drive up land values, consider what the Siolim-Chopdem bridge has done for the Morjim area. Remember, there are
two main ways to make money in real estate: 1) purchase at below market value, or 2) purchase at market value in an area of high demand and rising prices. The trick, then, is finding the “steals” or, alternatively, identifying high-growth areas. One caveat about investing in real estate in Goa and anywhere else in India: always check thoroughly for clear title and understand potential dangers like squatters and legal pitfalls. A good lawyer is a must.
Agriculture
While the common notion is that agriculture in the state is on the wane, if not already dead, an undercurrent is gathering steam, albeit in halting steps, largely thanks to the efforts of the Goa Agriculture Department. Many Goan expats are pumping money back into their homeland, investing in fertile land, especially in the hilly regions of the state
where water is abundant and farmers can obtain a controlled environment through a polyhouse, growing crops like flowers and vegetables all year round. With the government providing as much as a 90% subsidy on building greenhouses of 1 square kilometre, modern-thinking farmers are signing up by the dozens. In the program’s first year, some 200 of these structures have gone up, offering hope that agriculture in the state isn’t dead after all. Still, there’s much work to be done before Goa can claim its rightful place as an agricultural power house. Goa still imports a great deal of its produce from other states (even a large portion of the state’s famous cashews are actually grown elsewhere and merely processed here), with landowners preferring to sell their parcels for crores of rupees rather than put them to productive use. Farmers need education and equipment, and those interested in setting up a truly modern farm – with technology and know-how from places like the European Union – face many obstacles, including finding land at anything approaching affordable prices. The potential, of course, is huge. Goa’s competitive advantage is its abundance of fertile land near the coast, not far away from destinations like Doha and Dubai. With the right policies, including investing in chillers at the port and processing capabilities, “in five years we would be exporting to all over the world,” said one farmer who’s currently looking for land to set up operations in Goa.
IT Sector
Ever heard of a company called Browntape? It’s a cloud-based software that helps online merchants (people who sell on eBay, Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal, etc.) manage their orders and inventory in one place without the need to log in to each site separately. By many standards, it’s the hottest startup from Goa, and it’s been making waves across the IT scene. Working out of a small office in Porvorim, the company and its modus operandi are a testament to the fact that small-scale IT industries have a huge scope in Goa. Browntape isn’t alone. Quite a few IT-based companies and freelancers are choosing to live and work out of Goa, with the internet breaking down barriers and making it possible to work from anywhere, no matter where your client is. A group of Swedish web designers have set up shop in Panjim called the ‘Next Big Thing’ with clients being entirely from Sweden, while they live and work in Goa. Whole wouldn’t want to earn in foreign currency but spend in Indian currency? “Goa does have a potential to be an ideal IT hub. All it needs is industry standard approach,” said Arya Padte, the co-manager of the Goa Android User Group, India’s 2nd largest Android

12 Cover Story FROM PAGE 10 developer group and Goa’s first, helping hone young engineers into app developers. Goan authorities have longed talked about turning the state into a major centre for Information Technology. But progress has been slow, with mostly start-ups and freelancers taking the plunge rather than the big players. In order to attract the big bucks, of course, the state would have to invest heartily in ensuring proper power supply and internet access, two areas that are sorely lacking in Goa.
Entertainment
Ever since the International Film Festival of India shifted to Goa in 2004, the state has been host to a huge number of events, at a scale outnumbering even the largest cities of India. Controversies aside, events like Sunburn and Supersonic are here to stay and the universe of mega-events – like the actual universe – is expanding rapidly. That’s in addition to smaller parties and gigs that are now held year-round in Goa. It’s not a coincidence that outfits like the Deltin Group want to bring bigger and better casinos to the state. It’s because of a growing entertainment industry. Weddings, corporate events, film shoots, beach parties... The list is unending. There’s a popular maxim doing the rounds among Goa’s youth: “If you’ve made it within the state without having to emigrate, you’re probably in the entertainment industry.” Event management companies ranging from wedding planners to festival organizers are selling one thing: Brand Goa as a destination. While the sector seems like a solid investment opportunity that will only grow, inadequate infrastructure and the state’s garbage menace are undoubtedly harming Brand Goa.
Food Processing
Yes, the fish is fished in Goa. But tons of it is being sent to other states for processing. Both the central and the Goan governments have identified foodprocessing as a target sector, and the industry’s scope is huge. It’s not just fish, of course. The state’s Catholic meat-loving population provides a large market for an abundant product. The Goa Meat Complex, run by the government, is Goa’s only certified abattoir whose meat is permitted to be exported to West Asia. Could this be a model for other foodprocessing endeavours? Again, for this sector to truly take off, infrastructure improvements like roads, ports, power lines, etc will be necessary. “Most sardines are taken to other parts to extract the fish oil. Other fish,
too, is mostly exported for processing,” said Menino Afonso, the president of the Mandovi Fishermen’s cooperative society. With the government making noises about growing foodprocessing at home – and poised to offer facilities for all those willing to invest in it - this could be a good time to set up shop.
A biotechnology incubator is being set up to encourage biotech entrepreneurs,” the government has promised in its State investment policy. The good news is that if you believe Goa-based pharmaceutical companies will grow – as most in the industry do – you can always buy stock in them. Cipla, Glenmark and Indoco Remedies are listed on the Bombay and National Stock Exchanges, while several others operating from Goa (Syngenta, Ratiopharm, etc) are listed on stock exchanges abroad.
Manufacturing
Make no mistake. A Mecca of Manufacturing Goa is not. But could this be an advantage? When there’s nowhere to go but up, investors smell opportunity. A few manufacturers have long made their homes in Goa, including the tyre manufacturers MRF and Birla Group’s flagship Zuari Industries Ltd. According to official figures, in the past three years six new major industries have set up shop in the state while another 32 smallscale industries are expected to come up. Not exactly an avalanche, but not a disaster, either. Of course you don’t have to own a company to invest in Goabased manufacturing. The Automobile Corporation of Goa Ltd, a company jointly owned by Tata motors and the Government of Goa, as well as D-Link, a computer and network components manufacturer headquartered in Taiwan and operating from Verna, are listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange. Besides these few big names, of course, Goa is something of a ‘tabula rasa’ when it comes to manufacturing – with a base that can only grow. With the right kind of investment, that is.
Pharmaceutical Industry
Goa has a large, established pharmaceutical industry, with estimated
Aviation and Defence
yearly revenues of more than Rs. 7,500 crores ($1.35 billion). The industry is growing at a healthy rate of about 15% annually, and employs more than 25,000 persons. It is estimated that the pharmaceutical industry in Goa contributes around 10 percent of India’ pharmaceutical output. The Mormugao Port is a notified port for both import and export of pharmaceutical products, and there is an Assistant Drug Controller office in Mormugao. While the robust growth is an indicator of a favourable investment climate in Goa for pharmaceutical companies, the Government says it is working to further improve that climate, including by promoting a whole new industry alongside pharmaceuticals. “Synergies with the pharmaceutical industry along with the several other advantages such as a large educated population make Goa an attractive destination for biotechnology companies.
State-of-the-art manufacturing of aeroplane material isn’t what comes to mind when one thinks of Goa. So it may come as a surprise that our state hosts a company manufacturing carbon fibre composite material used to build aircrafts. A joint venture between the Kineco Group of Goa and Kaman Aerospace USA manufactures this light and tough material used to build fighter aircraft, putting Goa on the aerospace map. With large-scale procurement by the national Defense Ministry, changes in the procurement policy, and high-profile international weapons deals, indigenous production of defense equipment in India is expected to grow exponentially. The Government of Goa has promised to encourage more joint ventures between Indian and foreign companies in defense manufacturing and research & development.
Mining
It’s far from clear if iron-ore mining in the state will resume any time soon (see story on page 6). But do keep in mind that if and when it does, Sesa Sterlite (formerly Sesa Goa), Goa’s only publicly traded iron ore miner, stands to gain significantly. If you buy stock in it, presumably so would you.
You can keep your loot, and here’s a list of some additional banks.

And if the craving for the sun and the sea sets in, one is just a five-minute drive from the Anjuna and Baga beaches. ‘NYASSA’, which means lake or also divinity, is a project consisting of two
contemporary styled ultra luxury villas being constructed on individual plots at Siolim- Goa touching the Chapora river. Both the villas enjoy breathtaking views from their upper and lower decks. One can visit the beautiful Morjim beach and the popular Anjuna beach which are very close to ‘Nyassa’. That is, if you can pull yourself away from enjoying the views from the villa and of course the little Gazebos spread over the garden. ‘BELVEDERRE’ which is made up of nine four-bedroom villas and three apartments, is located in the scenic village of Pilerne. It is the perfect place to live and relish and experience tranquility in your own private paradise. Designed in the tradition of a typical Portuguese-styled villa, you can enjoy the view of the pool sitting in the balcao of your villa or, better still, savour a breathtaking view of the green fields as far as the eye can see, as you barbeque on the deck outside your dining room. And if you feel like some sea and sand, the Candolim beach is just a ten minute drive away. Some of their other well known completed projects are: Aquamarinne is a project set in an idyllic location on the banks of the Nerul river, with a beautiful view of verdant hills in the background. This project has 3 luxurious river-touch villas, where one can go boating or, if that’s a bit too adventurous for your tastes, you can take a dip in the beautiful swimming pool that is aligned with the villas. Symphonny comprises 28 single and double bedroom apartments and is situated in the hinterlands of Chapora, Goa. With a rooftop pool and deck that overlooks the Chapora river and fort, the apartments also enjoy the view of beautifully landscaped gardens and a lush valley. Tranquille is located walking distance from the famous Vagator beach. The project consists of compact but stylishly designed single & double bedroom apartments (ideal for holiday homes) set in a single building with a large lobby space. A swimming pool & a well-landscaped forecourt complete the setting. Ashray’s forthcoming projects are exclusive bungalows in Nerul. Given the company’s illustrious history, these homes are eagerly awaited indeed.

Dr. Celso Fernandes Dentist and Humanitarian who’ll tell you exactly where to INVEST!
By Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello
Numerous trophies lining the walls of his office in Navelim speak volumes of his immense success in business, dentistry and the art of giving back to society. Dr. Celso Fernandes is a disciplined man with passion. Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello catches up with the dentist whose charitable trust – the ‘Nave Marg Foundation’ has been working towards improving the infrastructure of Goa’s schools. And, apropo of this Investment Edition of Goa Streets, Dr. Celso stands out as one of the state’s most sought after financial advisors.
I
was awestruck with the 46-yearold dentist from Margao who can meticulously work on your pearly whites and at the same time talk about investments with even greater ardour. Dr. Celso Fernandes has been practicing dentistry for a quarter of a century in South Goa. His financial firm ‘Nave Marg’ is well known in investment circles and he’s been recognized for his activism in the Lions Club of Margao for 23 years. In retrospect, he’s happy that he missed securing a seat in the Goa Medical College and instead got admission in the Goa Dental College. “Dentistry is one of the luckiest professions. One has to treat 32 teeth, and even if you don’t have teeth, then also you need
to visit the dentist for dentures. No emergencies! No night calls!” he exclaims. “Though dental clinics have mushroomed everywhere and dentistry has turned out to be very competitive, what matters most is the relationship with the patients,” adds Dr. Celso. He is a life member of the Indian Dental Association, where he has held senior positions at both the state and national levels. He has also been awarded the Best State Branch (runner up trophy) for overall activities during his tenure as the State President, and ‘Dentist of the Year Award’ in 2003 by the Indian Dentist Research and Review journal based in Kerala. This is in addition to a number of highprofile awards he won in the areas of investments, recruitment and financial planning. And, of course, there’s his long and distinguished list of Lions Club awards. In 1995, he started the Zero Cavity Club where 180 children were enrolled for free dental checkups to ensure adequate care of their milk teeth. The club existed for just a year, but the scheme – and the help given to children who need it – continues to this day. Dr. Celso’s passion for investments took root in 1996 when he heard Goa’s leading chartered accountant, Ganesh Daivajna, deliver a talk at Cidade de Goa on ‘How to grow rich.’ Inspired by the talk, Dr. Celso opened up a second dental clinic and a laboratory (though today
he runs a single clinic in Navelim). It was then that he read the book written by American author and investor Robert Kiyosaki “Rich Dad Poor Dad.” He comments, “Nobody knows how to make money work for them. It is possible to earn without working for long hours. I decided to educate my family and friends about these views.” Dr. Celso also decided to educate himself further on the art of investing, passing exams from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority, the Association of Mutual Funds in India and Certified Financial Planning. Twice a month, he organizes seminars for a crowd of about 40, educating them about financial planning and investments. In 2012, he started the Young Achievers Club (meant for people aged 20 to 30 years) and the Millionaire Club (meant for the age group of 30 to 40 years). Through his financial planning, Dr. Celso has been helping these club members to create their own portfolio income by specifying certain targets. He says, “Our mission is to create 100 Goan crorepatis by 2020.” His Charitable Trust ‘Nave Marg Foundation’ donates funds towards the maintenance and improving of school toilets. By 2017, this husband and father of two children of his own hopes to touch 100 schools. For the past 7 years, he has been organizing Christmas parties for 250 children, of whom he considers himself to be godfather. He says, “Our foundation will take care of their finances in case of any misfortune.” With a staff of 4 at his Margao office, he works with hundreds of families. He smiles, “My dental patients become my financial clients and vice-versa.” Dr. Celso has been a very active member of Lion’s Club of Margao for the past 23 years, occupying various positions, including president and vice president. Through the Lion’s Club, MJF Lion, Dr. Celso has initiated a number of projects, including Lion’s Orthopedic Bank in 1998, the Senior Citizen Recreation Centre in 2008, Lion’s Scholarship for students who have lost an earning member in the family in 2010 and, in 2014, the Vision Clinic, which provides visual aids for sightimpaired children. Kudos to Dr. Celso, whose life is a testament to the power of passion, vision and hard work.

Dumelina Mascarenhas e Rodrigues Loving, Tenacious and 100 Years Old
By Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello
S
he never misses her shot of feni before dinner. She rubs coconut oil on her skin every morning. Her eldest child, were he still alive, would have been 80 years old now. Her husband died more than half a century ago, and she’s been the backbone of her family ever since. With five surviving children, 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, Dumelina Mascarenhas e Rodrigues, born a century ago, remains an incredibly strong, deeply caring and rigorously principled woman. At 100, this daughter of Goa is still as tough as nails – and an inspiration to her children and all others who know her. “Help each other,” she regularly admonishes her offspring. “Help each other.” It is her desire and her mantra – based on a stalwart belief in the primacy of love. The delightful Dumelina is now hard of hearing and, after a fall last August, wheelchair-bound. Her days conjuring magic in the kitchen are behind her. But if a person’s actualization can be judged by the depth of the admiration she elicits from others, especially her children, Dumelina gets an easy, unequivocal A Plus. Her son Francisco, who is 75 years old, and his brother Laureante, who is 65, spoke of their mother with great reverence. I could sense the profound sentiments they had for their extraordinary mom. “I was 24 years old when my dad passed away. For 51 years, she worked hard and made many sacrifices. She taught us how to cook, work hard and plant trees,” Francisco says. Adds Laureante: “We are grateful to what our mother has taught us ... She is a great woman, a strong woman and a woman of discipline.” As I visited Dumelina’s home in Colva, I sat down on the family’s sofa and the first words I heard were from her. She asked her sons in Konkani, “Konn ielam? – “Who has come?” As her sons introduced me, I muttered in Konkani, “keshi asa?” - “how are you?” - but I don’t think it was loud enough for her to hear. Later when she observed me taking notes, she asked her sons, “Tem kitem boroita?” – “What is she writing down?” I was taking notes, of course, so that I could tell her story. Dumelina Mascarenhas e Rodrigues, was born Jan. 11, 1915 in Assolda, the youngest
of eight siblings. With 5 brothers and 2 sisters, she is the only living sibling. Her husband Remedios Rodrigues, who made his living on ships, died of a heart attack in 1964. She was forced to hold two jobs to make ends meet and raise her 6 children. Dumelina worked in the fields, and carried baskets of coconuts for landowners. She carried a bowl of the rice dish Kanji from home when she toiled in the fields. “I rate her No. 1 for love and affection. She considers all her children as equal. If it hadn’t been for her, I would have become a vagabond. I was in boarding school after my dad passed away. With Francisco’s help, I did my accounting.” explained Laureante. Her children are Francisco, 75, Augustino, 71, Laureante, 65, Blasio, 61, and Joanita, the only daughter, who is 67. The eldest, Calisto, died in 2009 at 74 years old. Dumelina’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren all affectionately call her Mai, or mother. Her 13 grandchildren include seven boys and six girls. The eldest is 47 and youngest is 14. Her 12 great grandchildren include four boys
and eight girls, with the eldest great grandson being 16 years old and the youngest just 14 months. Though Dumelina is softnatured, she was a strict disciplinarian. If her children were not on time for Rosary or their meals, she would pour water in their rice. Laureante said, “That taught us good manners.” Dumelina has always been healthy. Laureante remarked, “I do not remember her falling sick. She has never been hospitalized; she just visited the doctor for a few complaints. She has not taken any medicines.” Dumelina rubs coconut oil on her body every morning to keep her skin well nourished. She never misses her cup of hot water after every meal. Though she has never eaten chicken, beef and mutton, she likes to eat pork and, of course, fish. A small feni is a must before she has her dinner. She used to churn
out delicious dishes until recently when she decided to retire from the kitchen. Laureante said, “She was very quick with her cooking. She loves admas (pork dish).” Francisco added, “Though it was simple food like rice, curry, chapattis, pez, tizaan, attol, and koiloreo, we miss that.” Her diet has not changed much over the years. Waking up at about 9 am, she has biscuits and tea for breakfast. Her lunch consists of Goa’s staple diet rice, curry, fish and vegetables. With an evening cuppa with biscuits, Dumelina prefers to go light with her dinner - pao (bread) and vegetables. She is quite fond of her afternoon siesta and when she is up, she likes to sit out watching people passing by. This 100-year-old has always loved wearing sarees. Many of them are now worn by her granddaughters and great granddaughters. Her centennial birthday celebrations kicked off with a thanksgiving Mass at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Colva at 12 pm. With the church full of people taking part in the celebrations, the fully lucid Dumelina gave her blessings to everyone. The service was followed with a reception for a crowd of 800 in the Church hall. Laureante said, “She was very happy cutting the cake.” He added that his mother’s 90th birthday, 10 years ago, was celebrated at the budget resort he owns in Colva – La Ben. “Nowadays, most people live unhealthy lifestyles. Bad food habits, lack of exercise, greed for earning a quick buck, many tensions … are leading many to their death graves,” continued Laureante. “Until last year, Mai was okay. She could walk. Unfortunately, she had a fall last August and today, she is in a wheelchair,” commented Laureante. Still, her zest for life, stamina and belief in humanity’s better angels are intact. I, and the rest of the team at Goa Streets, wish Dumelina good health, continued happiness and many more years!

over a fireplace or on exterior walls. Fluorescent lighting is another enemy, as is excessive varnishing, heat, UV rays, temperature rise and humidity (like we have in Goa). These things can change the tonal balance of the work, and, if neglected, can lead to irrevocable damage. Restoring a painting is an expensive proposition and requires an experienced restorer, trained in paint composition, fabric reconstruction, and up-to-the-minute, noninvasive methods. Oil, acrylic, and watercolour require different techniques, and the expertise of a restorer starts with the least intervention possible to the original work. If you notice the paint peeling or

discolour due to mould growth, you should attend to it before the damage increases. A careful evaluation of the surface is the main requisite to determine if the painting can withstand the plan of treatment. There’s no ideal treatment that does not cause some degree of damage to the original paint. Restoring oil paintings is a complicated process and inexperience in restoring techniques can destroy it. A canvas can tear, develop holes, or flake. Acrylic paint is relatively porous and dries differently than oil and watercolour. Acrylics develop yellow discolouration, and when exposed to sub-zero temperatures become brittle and begin to crack. dust settling on oils and acrylic is inevitable, so one must wipe the surface very gently with damp soft cloth, or vacuum it. Foxing is a form of mildew, easily removed with an anti-mildew agent containing Sodium Hypochloride. Fading was a major issue with watercolour on paper due to the acidic nature of paper, but now non-acidic paper is available. Damage can also involve browning, curling, creasing, and insect spoilage. There’s no way to restore colour pigments especially with watercolour, but steps can be taken from further fading, by framing it in U3 coated plexiglass. The first and most extensive recorded cleaning, re-varnishing and touch-up of a painting was Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, undertaken by Jean-Marie Hooghstoel, in 1809, which involved cleaning with spirits, touch-up of colour, and re-varnishing the work. Subsequently, it has been restored several times. Despite India’s growing appetite for art, there are few recognized art conservators in Delhi and Mumbai who adhere to global standards and are trusted by collectors and auction houses. The National Museum houses an institute that teaches conservation, but many works requiring restoration don’t see the light of day because of shortage of staff. The independently run Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, (formerly the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India) in Mumbai, houses a first-of-its-kind initiative to conserve India's rich and varied heritage. It has upgraded its conservation lab over three years courtesy of a 20 million rupee grant from the Ministry of Culture, supported by the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. Works by some of India’s foremost artists have undergone restoration, including F.N. Souza, Ismat Chughtai, S.H. Raza, M F Husain and the Tagores. Priya Khanna, based in Delhi, runs one of the largest private conservation studios in India. A Lucknow-based restoration team with years of experience has conserved art work from the Varanasi Museum Jnana-Pravaha. If you save a painting, you’re saving the artist, and augmenting your investment.

Let’s not just GO. Let’s Drive a Datsun Today By Shubham Gupta
W
hat comes to mind when you think of a seven-seater car to drive around your entire family? It’s possible you’re thinking of a Sports Utility Vehicle that costs a fortune or a van that might not have the safety and luxury features you require. Fortunately, there is a car on the market that is great on mileage, has all the modern features you’d desire and will carry seven people including the driver. But there’s a twist. It’s not an SUV nor a station wagon nor a van. It’s a hatchback (a category of car in which the boot is integrated into the cabin space) and it’s now available in Goa. Behold Datsun GO+, now available at A.M. Ventures in Porvorim and Verna. It’s a complete package for modern-day nuclear families, developed as a cozy, movable family lounge. With the ability to accommodate two people in the front, three in the rear and an another two people in the additional foldable seats in the boot, the Datsun GO+ is the only seven-seater in its segment. It is what I call the hatchback of the future. In addition to being extremely convenient for big families and all those who have lots of friends, the vehicle
is ideal for folks who believe in car-pooling and the reduction of traffic, pollution, and usage of fossil fuels. This car is ahead of its time, proving that something as simple as increasing the seating and load capacity can be a green step into the future. The best part is that it is priced very competitively among hatchbacks in its segment. Moreover, apart from the two bonus seats, the gear shift knob and the parking brake lever are intelligently integrated into the instrument panel, yielding additional floor room. In addition, it comes in five stunning metallic colours, namely, ruby, gold, white, silver and grey. But let’s face it. Interior space is important but not necessarily everything you look into while buying a car. The Datsun GO+ has a very contemporary
design with a sleek and dynamic silhouette along with a strong shoulder line. The neatness in the body styling makes it a one-of-its-kind sevenseater hatchback. When it comes to performance, this stupendous piece of engineering gives an output of 68ps horsepower with an 1198cc engine and still manages to maintain the incredible mileage of 20.6 kilometres per litre. Another added feature is that the accelerator is electronic and not mechanic, lowering the emissions and the maintenance. With its 22mm ventilated disc brakes and minimal turning radius of 731 centimetres, this car is highly manoeuvrable, which makes it handy enough to make a three-point turn on a narrow street. So if you are looking at buying a brand new affordable car which will enrich your daily travel, with more space to boot, you can book a test drive exclusively at A.M.
