hen I prodded 17-yearold Fleur Dias to sing a tune, she obliged by belting out Adele’s ‘Rolling in the deep.’ Her voice has the raspiness of Shania Twain and the melodious ring of Christina Grimmie. Amazing! Having won 3rd place in the All Goa State competition in 2011 and 2nd place at the Taluka Level organized by Department of Art and Culture in 2011, Fleur is a very talented singer. In 2012, she was invited by the Portuguese Consul Dr. Antonio Sabido Costa to sing at a party hosted at his Panjim residence for the acclaimed Portuguese group ‘Deolinda.’ Having won 2nd place for ‘Goencho Avaz’ (All Goa Konkani Singing contest) organized by Herald last year and several other prizes in Vem Cantar (Portuguese

singing competition), Fleur was also crowned the Voice of Curtorim, organized by the Curtorim Cultural Committee when she was just 10 years old. Fleur has plans to release albums in the future, having already written about 15 songs. As I question her about the song titles, a reluctant Fleur divulges a few names, ‘Queen of Hearts,’ ‘Broken’ and ‘A Thousand Times.’

She has her own YouTube channel where she makes her songs available to a larger audience. She says, “I upload covers of songs and my live performances. I have over 24,000 channel views till date. It feels great to have people from all over the world to comment on my videos, send messages and requests for me to cover their favorites.” TURN TO PAGE 4

Fleur also sings and plays the violin for the popular band Take 5ive, performing for Basement Jaxx 7, Noman Tuka Goa, Deltin Royale, Woodstock, among others. “Being with Take 5ive has been an awesome experience. I am the baby of the group,” smiles Fleur. She also plays for Take 5ive choir. From 2006 to 2013, she was also part of her dad’s choir at the Carmelite Monastery in Margao every 4th Sunday. Fleur still sings at the monastery on Easter and Good Friday, and sings at the midnight Christmas service at Loyola’s in Margao. Fleur is also an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer, with nine years of training. She has performed with her dance troupe from Kalangan - Centre for Performing Arts in Margao - for the closing ceremony of the Lusofonia Games held last year. Fleur has also completed her ‘Arangetram’ in Bharatanatyam - three to four hour recital where the dancer performs different dance pieces. In 2010, she performed the dance ‘Sapta Stuta’ with six others at Ravindra Bhavan in Margao. People used to ask her why she pursued Bharatanatyam as opposed to ballet, and she responded, “Bharatanatyam is beautiful in its own form. The more you learn, the more you discover its beauty.” Fleur was born with music within. At the age of one and a half, she was seen humming standing at the grills of a window. She started singing at the age of three. Music runs in her family with her dad Irineu a musician and her maternal grandmother a pianist. At the age of six, she started learning the violin and piano. She has already completed her Grade 5 in violin from Associated Board of Royal School of Music (London) and Grade 5 in piano from Trinity College of Music (London), securing distinctions in both exams. In 2014, Fleur completed her Grade 5 in Western Classical Singing from Trinity College of Music (London) securing 93/100, the highest in Goa that year. Harboring a wish to complete Grade 8 in Western Classical Vocals and Grade 8 in piano and/or violin, Fleur says, “I have to complete the topmost grade – Grade 8; otherwise it would be like leaving my music studies midway.” Having academically excelled in Xth standard at Fatima Convent High School with a 95.5%, Fleur is currently pursuing her XIIth Science from Damodor Higher Secondary School in Margao and has plans of joining medicine. She says, “I am preparing for GCET exams in May and other competitive exams too. I want to hold a steady job as well as do something in music. Singing will always be a part of me.” Her favourite songs are Celine Dion’s My heart will go on and Beyonce’s Listen, among many others. Fleur sings in English, Hindi, Konkani, and Portuguese; she is learning French and would love to sing in French too. She is into pop, country, soul, R & B, jazz, adult contemporary and gospel music. “My parents have been very supportive. My mom, a dentist by profession, has been managing her career and housework, and helping me to plan out my schedule. My dad has been very much helpful in picking and dropping me off,” says Fleur. “They have never forced me to do anything. On the contrary, they have always asked me, ‘Are you overburdened?’ They see that I get enough rest and play time. I give 100% credit to my parents,” says a grateful Fleur. She says, “Be yourself. Know your self-worth. Youngsters of today want to ape others. They need to realize that they are beautiful just as the way they are; God’s masterpieces. Live each day as if it was your last. Keep the faith because faith keeps you going.”

importance given to the tiniest of details in the designs woven on the woollen or silk carpets, the quality and the pricing won’t disappoint. Pashmina: Pashmina is a fine quality of cashmere wool whose textiles were first manufactured in Kashmir. Mostly used for shawls, the Pashmina that comes from Kashmir is the finest in the world. And that’s exactly what you’ll get at PR. Wrapping around a pashmina shawl is one of the classiest ways to accessorize for the winters. These fine wool shawls are popular for the eccentric and elaborate craftsmanship displayed on the panels along the shawl. Pashmina shawls, made from wool sourced from the high latitude Ibex, boasts of fine texture. Though pure Pashmina is never cheap (and there’s some very fine ones on offer

here), mixed Pashmina varieties available at PR are rather reasonable. Souvenirs: The wood carving industry of J&K is known for its excellence throughout the country. Walnut wood is considered the best wood for carvings since even after excessive carving, the wood retains its strength. Some of Kashmir’s most impressive woodwork is found on ceilings of rooms. The technique for this work is immensely complicated and the end product is equally mesmerizing. This kind of woodcarving is called Khatam Band. You’ll find similar styles of carvings at PR on small and big sculptures, among all the souvenirs and memorabilia to choose from.  Baga Beach Goa 403516 Contact Nos +91 8698075125 / 9822103790

BJP Gets A Nod From The Goan Capital But Resting On Its Laurels Would Be Perilous By Crespo D’Souza

T

he votes are in and Panjim has decided. The state assembly seat held by Manohar Parrikar before he became India’s Defense Minister, will go to Siddharth Kuncalienker, also of the ruling party. The irony of the verdict was that his nearest rival, the Congress Party’s Surendra Furtado, is actually a decent fellow who very well may have been a more effective MLA than the man who beat him. In the end, however, the point is moot because the truth is these elections had little to do with either Kuncalienker or Furtado. Instead, they were more about Panjimites’ affection for Parrikar, who campaigned personally for his party at home despite his duties in New Delhi, and their pride at seeing this son of Goa reach such lofty heights. The election was also a clear indication of the political bankruptcy of Goa’s Congress Party, which could have put up Mahatma Gandhi himself in this balloting and still lost. The vote was also a testament to the large number of Panjim

voters who saw personal and financial benefits from supporting the BJP. The Goa vote, like six other assembly constituencies across the country which also witnessed by-polls, sent an unmistakable message to all those calling an early end to the Narendra Modi-BJP honeymoon. Yes, the ruling party was trounced in New Delhi. But in Goa and other places around India, the party is showing itself to still have substantial firepower. BJP politicians resting on their laurels will do so at their own risk, to be sure. In the end, the voters of Panjim expect results – a growing economy, a clean city, public services that work, a commitment to putting the people’s needs first. The Congress is where it is because it failed to deliver. And that is a cautionary tale for the BJP. Kuncalienker defeated Furtado by more than 5,000 votes in the Feb. 13 election, garnering a vote share of more than 60%. Two other independent candidates, Sadanand Vaigankar, a former BJP loyalist, and Samir Kelekar, an IIT-ian who tried to project himself as a credible alternative to the other parties, failed to achieve four figure votes. The results surprised no one, with Congress conceding at its post-election press conference that “defeat was expected.” As in other assembly votes, people placed their bets on the ruling horse. “This is a pattern that has been evident for quite some time now, where people do not want to upset the apple cart. During by elections, by and large they vote in favour of the ruling party,” Congress spokesperson Ramakant Khalap said. It has to be noted that the election would not have altered the Goa

state government no matter how it turned out. The government’s threefourths majority in a house of 40 wouldn’t be affected if its number were reduced by one. Still, winning the vote was a matter of pride for Parrikar and the BJP, and losing would have been a serious embarrassment. For the Panjim voter and party workers, continued patronage of BJP seemed like a logical choice. For one, the party is known to be vindictive of those who betray it, and many hoped their loyalty would be rewarded. Parrikar himself went door to door campaigning in what he said was a move to “thank the voters of Panjim”. He didn’t get a chance to do so earlier, he said, as he was hurriedly summoned to New Delhi last November. “He’s going around telling people to vote for the BJP because of him and not because of the candidate who is actually standing for elections,” said a voter from Panjim who didn’t wish to be named said. Panjim has been a BJP bastion for the past two decades after it first won the seat in 1992, owing to a split of votes between the Congress candidate Keshav Prabhu and (hold your breath) Surendra Furtado, who contested as an independent, ensuring that Parrikar was elected and marking the beginning of the current defense minister’s political career. The BJP would have had to do something terrible to have lost these elections. Instead, as noted by rival independent candidate Samir Kelekar, the BJP, despite soft rumblings of internal discord, was at its organisational best. “Four youngsters (probably belonging to BJP) were frantically looking at the list, trying to figure out who did not vote, and rushing to their houses to get them to vote. This is what it takes. Elections are not fought on Facebook. We have no future unless we get young people motivated to work on the ground,” Kelekar observed, recalling an incident he experienced outside a polling booth at Ribandar on voting day. “I congratulate BJP and in fact salute the workers of BJP who toiled on the ground.

I was indeed envious of them. You can call it RSS or whatever, but let us not demean their hard work,” he said. For all his grandstanding, Congress candidate Surendra Furtado could at most retain the party’s traditional vote base. And considering that he was up against not just the BJP candidate, but also his own party’s legislator from neighbouring Santa Cruz constituency Atanasio “Babush” Monserrate, who publicly declared his support for the BJP candidate, Furtado’s battle was uphill indeed. Babush’s journey from first pledging to contest the ticket as in independent to later supporting the BJP, earned him an exit from the party, with Congress’s state executive resolving to have him expelled. Many Goans believe Babush was “arm twisted” into his support for the BJP, given the criminal cases against him which were effectively used by the BJP as a bargaining tool. Talk of Babush’s deals with the BJP isn’t anything new, of course. And his behaviour in this past election has only strengthened this viewpoint. Where does the election leave the Congress or any hopes of a third front in Goa? The message of the voter is clear. The Congress will have to set its house in order and ensure it has feet on the ground, convincing voters of its relevance. Independents take note - you cannot win an election through campaigning on Facebook. Your battle for 2017 should begin now. As Kelekar noted, “Don’t even think of changing Goa unless you are willing to sweat it out.” 

Chef Edridge Vaz (middle) preparing instinctive art paired with distinctive food

his month, Park Hyatt Goa Resort and Spa is presenting Freedom of Expression through art and food. Goan artist Shilpa Nasnolkar and Chef Edridge Vaz from Casa Sarita have teamed up with expert art consultant Samira Sheth and to present connoisseurs of good food and art a unique opportunity to connect their experiences with

both forms of creative expression in one place – the unique Goan restaurant Casa Sarita. The opening evening was a celebration of all things creative – whether on the palate or of the palette. Shilpa displayed select pieces from her distinctive oeuvre while Chef Vaz presented a contemporary Goan menu. Shilpa’s expressive raw style is reminiscent of the Neo-Expressionists with its highly textural brushwork and intense colours. Chef Vaz stimulates the appetite with his take on Goan food, creating a menu crafted from seasonal ingredients. The preview saw the best of the gourmet and art world come together to create an experience that was truly unique. Chef Edridge, sous chef at Casa Sarita, has over a decade long tenure in the world of hospitality. His expertise includes a strong fascination with food and art, enabling him to create menus and dishes that amalgamate authentic flavours with modern and minimalistic presentations. Shilpa, a self-taught artist, is known for her work with acrylics and watercolours on canvas. She has conducted several successful one woman and group art shows, establishing herself as an artist to look out for.

Just ‘cuz you haven’t HEARD of something doesn’t mean it ain’t AMAZING! By Dielle D’Souza The season is beginning to wind down. You’ve experienced all the necessary evils, visited all the regular haunts, been there and done and are thinking, is that all there is? Happily, the answer to that question is a resounding, NO! How ‘bout going off-road, down a barely lit trail and discovering things – right here at home – that have been staring you in the face but you haven’t quite noticed. There is so much more to Goa than the beaches, restaurants and nightclubs that everyone and their mother flock to. These are experiences, places and services we need to hold dear, to encourage without spoiling. Here’s just a few of them.

Luxury bazaar at Le Souk by Amarya The Saturday Night Market is one of Goa’s big draws, being more of a fun experience than a shopping excursion. When the pockets are deeper and the shopaholic soul restless, a trip to Le Souk by Amarya in Ashvem might be a good idea. It’s a luxury bazaar that has all the aura of the fashion world cascading out of Middle Eastern-inspired décor. It includes Indo-French collections at The Shop by Nana Ki, contemporary home textiles and accessories at The Bohemian Project, apparel and home furnishings at Shades of India, whimsical Bollywood-inspired bags at Paris Goa, unique handcrafted luggage at Nappa Dori, fine jewellery at Van Andel & Peace, beauty and skin care offerings at Bottega di LungaVita, men’s wear at Jonas G, specialty haircuts by Guy Staumont at Le Studio Haircut and products by Royal Enfield and Leela Art Palace. There’s also Le Café for nibbles and juices, La Crêperie for delicious pancakes and Nespresso Bar for a caffeine fix.

Uncovering history at Chikhali Caves Several years ago, four underground caves were discovered that proved the existence of prehistoric settlement in Goa. Pot shards, found at the caves in Mormugao taluka, prove that it is one of the oldest known sites of human habitation in the state. It is possible that these were once used as burial chambers, and as such can be considered holy in the eyes of history lovers. For a place that cries itself hoarse about eras that began with the arrival of Vasco da Gama, Goa certainly offers awe-inspiring eye-openers.

Deluxe detox at The Beach House This might be a rather indulgent way to begin Lent – or wind down the season of decadence – but it’s a good option to get all the holiday season toxins out of your body with minimal self-motivation. The retreat in Sernabatim, south Goa, is hidden away from the temptations of city life, and provides a sojourn of rest and relaxation. A number of treatments are available, with clients starting off on a screening process that assesses their physical, psychological and physiological systems which goes into developing a tailor-made programme for the length of their stay. The Beach House also mentors guests at the resort and after they return home to help maintain their new, healthy lifestyle.

Georgian artisanal cheese by Maia Cheese platters are the ultimate classics at sunset events, where you want a bit of formality but couldn’t bother with rustling up a spread for guests at dinner. One can never have enough cheese but it isn’t always Camembert or Roquefort that steals the show. Thanks to the tourist influx, there’s a whole smörgåsbord of cheeses available in Goa. But way down south, in the sleepy breezy village of Palolem, Maia Donadze brings traditional Georgian cheese to Goa, made from Indian milk but using techniques learnt back in the Eastern European country she calls home. Maia Cheese offers a variety of products, including feta, cream cheese, quark, buffalo mozzarella, smoked mozzarella, blue and ‘bree’, and also does cheese tables at weddings and other occasions. Village life at Olaulim Backyards This is quiet, eco-friendly, warm and very, very local. The homestay in Olaulim, Pomburpa, allows guests to soak in the kind of environment our forefathers grew up in, with a few modern flourishes such as an azure blue swimming pool, comfortable beds and convenient WCs. With just two cottages and a tree house to choose from, there’s never a crowd and one is rest assured that the environment is as taken care of as you are. From water and electricity conservation and composting, to recycling and natural furnishing, Savio and Pirrko at Olaulim Backyards certainly put their back into it. Locally sourced fresh seafood and vegetables are cooked on a traditional wood-fire and seasonal fruit are always on the table.

Eco e-waste with Group TenPlus It’s the age of electronics and short attention spans. Combine the two and you have new gadgets making themselves at home in cars, rooms and pockets. What happens then to all the waste? While some of it can be palmed off via online classifieds portals such as Quickr and Olx, much of it needs to be binned. Group TenPlus in Saligao provides complete e-waste solutions from collection to disposal in Goa that is all recycled and kept out of landfills. The company does not put any of the electronics up for resale, and ensures that all equipment that could contain sensitive data – such as mobile phones and computers – is shredded.

On and Off the Road

Goa’s hinterland roads have long been the haunt of riding and driving enthusiasts. The open tarmac, rich hues of vegetables growing in open fields, the rush of wind – and not to mention the hearty aroma of roadside snacks – make the state an easy, yet enjoyable ride. Since 1999, Blazing Trails Tours has been riding standard Royal Enfield Bullets across the length and breadth of the country. The group of carefree souls, who once had an office in Saligao, offers a number of tours in India and South Africa. If they’re out on tour, there are other options. Based in Assagao, Peter Paulo Dos Santos and his friends established the Classic Bike Adventure project with a fleet of more than 35 Enfield Bullets that offers over a dozen rides as well as custom tours. And if you feel like something dirtier, get your gear on and head down hundreds of kilometres of deserted forest tracks with John Pollard at his Off The Grid homestay in the Western Ghats.

Luxury yachting on board Lady M Lay off the stuffy five-star dinners and turn it up several notches. Goa’s quiet backwaters, bordered by lush mangroves and teeming ecosystem are lying in wait. Captain Roberto Amaral, who owns Cancio’s guest house in Aldona, offers guests and walk-in visitors the chance to soak in Goa’s hinterland beauty on board his 42-foot yacht that he calls Lady M. The catamaran and its smaller speedboat cousin have been used in movies and advertisements and provide stunning visuals of tranquil village life in Goa. Lady M has a spacious forward deck for parties, a specially designed fly-bridge, ample aft deck lounging area, and offers everything from sunset cruises to overnight trips with food and beverages, and even a DJ! Want to make things extra special? Book a full moon cruise.

Pimp Your Ride at Speed Accessories Sometimes you don’t want a regular ride, and with the vehicles market virtually exploding in Goa, it’s almost certain you will be lost among the stampeding herd. To stand out a little without looking cheap, head to Speed Accessories in Caranzalem, Panjim, where enthusiast Kenneth Fernandes owns an exclusive little outfit that furnishes your ride with some of that swagger you always wanted. Opened in 2006, Speed Accessories does everything from chic bumpers, 3D floor mats and fancy new alloys to projector headlights, LED work and custom car wraps. Based on the client’s budget, Fernandes imports accessories from Singapore, Thailand, the UK, Germany or Italy. He accepts new clients only by appointment and never takes on more than two cars a day, ensuring quick, quality work you are bound to love. So sweeten your new car or doll up old Betsy; it pays to be different.

Scrumptious Saraswat food at Suwadik Even as a resident of the state, eating Goan food in a restaurant is most often restricted to fish curry rice, crumb fried fish and a host of Indo-Portuguese dishes. Places that serve satisfying pre-Portuguese inspired food is generally restricted to the ‘aunty’ in the twobench chai shop who will churn out thali after thali of delicious lunch. In Panjim, Chef Keshav Nadkarni’s Suwadik restaurant serves the quintessential Saraswat Hindu cuisine in an environment where you don’t have to roll up your sleeves, swat off the flies or share your table with strangers. Accompanied by a Mario Miranda-style painting, diners relish tisryanche dangar (clam cutlets), fish thalis, mackerel pickle, bharlele bangde (stuffed mackerel), the ever popular sungtache lonche (prawn pickle), bangdyachi uddhemethi (mackerel curry) and sweets including kharvas (made from cow’s colostrum milk), tavsali (Goan cucumber cake) with vanilla ice cream and nachinyachem satv (red millet pudding).

F

rom the 25th of February till the 7th of March, residents of Panjim are in for a treat. For during this time, the city itself will become a platform for exhibiting some of the country's and the world's most innovative contemporary photography. This is happening courtesy of Goa Photo (www.goaphoto.in), an international photography festival that will occur annually in the state capital and surrounding areas, and will significantly contribute to the growing momentum of cultural activities in Goa. The objective of Goa Photo is to bring exceptional documentary and art photography to the people. This idea is taken quite literally. Instead of the usual exhibitions in closed spaces with framed images hanging on the walls, the festival team has decided to set up the exhibitions in open-air in public spaces: in places such as the rear garden of the Kala Academy, the courtyard of the Old GMC, on the rear facade of the Old Secretariat, and in Fontainhas. A portion of the festival will also be held in the upper level of the Reis Magos Fort in Verem. With the images displayed in public spaces, people will be able to

engage the works on display on their own terms, outside of the usual institutional settings and pedantic jargons. "What we wanted was to conceive of a photography festival that is democratic in nature," says Nikhil Padgaonkar, one of the founding members of the festival. "By that, I mean a festival where the locals can view and engage the works without needing to enter a museum, a hotel, without having to become a delegate or pay a fee. There is no exclusivity. The exhibitions are taken to the people in their own streets, buildings and parks, so they get to enjoy it in familiar surroundings." The inaugural edition will be curated by internationally renowned photography curator Frank Kalero. He has been the curator for many important photography festivals all over the world, including France, Spain and Brazil. Working around a core theme would help to distinguish them from other festivals: this year's theme is called "The Other" which is an exploration of the many ways of making a portrait. "It became clear that the moment we have

a theme, we can propose a coherent set of exhibitions, united by their subject-matter even while they are stylistically very different from each other, and this makes it easier to relate to the festival as a whole, and it is Frank who selects the core exhibition, making this a truly curated festival.” Fundamental to this project was to get on board the city authorities who would permit these open-air exhibitions to be staged in public spaces. They first approached the Mayor early last year, who in turn, referred them to the Commissioner. "Sanjit Rodrigues was very supportive of the idea. I think he saw how a festival likes this could help promote cultural tourism or synergise with efforts to re-brand the city" says Lola. He even suggested that building facades or public markets serve as exhibition venues. Many of the key festival venues fall under the purview of other authorities such as the Kala Academy, the ESG, the Directorate of Arts & Culture, and the Church authorities. They had to visit each one and convince them to permit the installation of these outdoor exhibitions on their property. Their festival advisors, many of who are established personalities from the world of culture and photography - such

as Maria Couto, Margaret Mascarenhas, Vivek Menezes, Aradhana Seth, Luis Dias and Denzil Sequiera- played a crucial role in this regard. For instance, Margaret Mascarenhas took them to meet Father Joaquin Loiola at the Archbishop's residence in Altinho and then to meet Father Cleto Pereira, the Parish priest of the main Panjim Church, to ask for permission to stage an exhibition on the steps of the Church. "Our advisors have been wonderful and have really guided us. Without them, we would never have reached so far," gushes Lola, the other founding partner. For this year's edition of the festival, nineteen exhibitions are planned, along with a range of talks, discussions presentations and workshops related to photography. There are also a series of collateral exhibitions by Raghu Rai, Shivani Gupta, Nishant Shukla and other talented photographers. T

he Glenlivet, the no. 1 single malt in India brought ‘The Legacy Tasting’ – an exclusive tasting experience for selected patrons with its international brand ambassador, Mr. Alex Robertson on his recent seven-city tour to India. The session involved Alex taking esteemed guests through a guided tasting session where they synchronized their palates with the brilliantly wellbalanced single malt whisky. of The Glenlivet. “The 7-course degustation menu was based on individual pairings bearing in mind subtle nuances of spice, fruit and fragrant notes of the whiskys with bold undertones of earthy textures to not only complement but also enhance the tasting experience,” Vikram Singh said. Shefali Gandhi Singh’s latest restaurant venture Koi (after Rockfish in Baga) hosted some of the city’s whisky cognescenti in an intimate but glittering gathering. A Welcome Cocktail and Hors D’ouvres were followed by a sit-down 7-course menu and a courseby-course discourse on the pairing by Alex Robertson. The evening started with The Glenlivet 12, 15 and progressed to The Glenlivet 18 by the main course and a post dessert toast of The Glenlivet 21. The evening turned out to be a grand soiree and everyone present was appreciative of the complexity, versatality and the confluence of a myriad range of flavours throughout the tasting and pairing.
