Transalento

Haunting, Mystical, Psychedelic Grooving at Teso Waterfront By Goa Streets

W

hen you’ve lived a long life and seen much of the world, it becomes increasingly difficult to encounter experiences that are truly new. That’s why a recent evening at Teso Waterfront, on the banks of the Chapora River in Siolim, can be described as extraordinary, in the true sense of the word. Before we continue, let’s answer the question, what is Teso Waterfront? Is it a resort? A nightclub? A boutique? A restaurant? It’s all of the above, and a lot more. It’s one of those rare places on the planet that, when you attempt to describe it in words, you risk diminishing the reality. Seven luxury tents with their own private waterfront decks perhaps form the core of the stunningly beautiful property. Delicately draped cabanas surround an enormous maple dance floor adorned with crisp white furnishings. Even without the stunning performance that graced the venue this past week, sitting beneath the stars, gazing at the wondrously lit up river, sipping the spirits and munching the world-class cuisine would have made for a fabulous evening in itself. So when you add ‘Transalento’ to the mix, a musical journey melding haunting tribal sounds with psychedelic, contemporary beats – all created with such unusual instruments as the didjeridoo and the facebass – the evening has suddenly gone from fabulous to something bordering on magical. It’s no wonder. With Kavita Soni Presa on vocals and performing classical dance, Andrea Presa on the didjeridoo, facebass and vocals, and the amazing Elvis Lobo on guitar, how can you go wrong? The band repertoire includes transforming traditional songs from India and the south of Italy.

There are ‘trancy, funky’ grooves, irregular rhythms, progressive jazz improvisation, R n B soul flavours and a tribal heart. The combination is the perfect inspiration to hit the dance floor, which many did at last Tuesday night’s performance. This was truly a musical journey, from a world tribal culture to a moving contemporary sound. Turn to page 5

From page 3 The thing about an evening at Teso Waterfront is that every base is covered. From the amazing view and ambience to the music to the drinks to the food, which in our case involved some wonderfully prepared chicken tikka, chicken malia, butter garlic prawns and garlic naan. These offerings were all of superior quality. On one side of the vast deck serving as the venue for this unique evening

is Tesotique, a store offering exclusive swimwear and other clothing options in addition to funky bags, lighters and a selection of souvenirs. Call it Bohemian chic. A luxurious, laid-back, tasteful refuge from the hard world around it. And with performances like Transalento, one of the hottest, most interesting destinations in all of Goa. Contact: +91 832 227 0091 / 92 Or log onto www.tesogoa.com

6  The Lowdown

The Lowdown Steven Gutkin, the venture’s chief mentor, is an awardwinning journalist who has reported from some two dozen countries in the Middle East, Asia, Africa and the Americas. An international newsman for 25 years, Steven served as Bureau Chief with the Associated Press, the world’s largest news gathering organization, in Israel and Venezuela, as well as AP’s Chief of Southeast Asia Services in Singapore and Indonesia, and Senior Editor in the US. Steven covered the rise and fall of the Medellin and Cali cocaine cartels, rode into Kabul with a triumphant Northern Alliance and directed coverage of wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Gaza and Lebanon. The Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar was caught because he lingered on the phone with his son to answer Steven’s questions, and the cops traced the call. Steven covered the killing of Daniel Pearl in Pakistan, hurricanes in Puerto Rico and Mexico, the death of Yasser Arafat, a coup in Fiji and the rise to power of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. Steven has also worked for the New York Times, the Washington Post, Newsweek and CBS Radio. Marisha Dutt, Publisher and Editor of Goa Streets, is a former Marketing and Advertising Manager with The Wall Street Journal in Singapore. She took a break from work to raise her two boys in Indonesia, Israel and the United States. She has a Masters Degree in Marketing from The University of Strathclyde in the UK and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Relations. She was born in Assam, India and spent her early years on a tea plantation overlooking a pristine wildlife sanctuary. When she was 10, she and her family moved to Calcutta, where Marisha had the privilege of working alongside Mother Teresa. Later the family moved to Goa. Marisha and Steven were married 11 years ago on the Candolim beach.

Ananda Krishna, Photographer, turned hopefully towards the camera early in life. With an abundance of knowledge and overwhelmed by his brilliant teachers in Light and Life Academy, Ooty, Ananda (last ‘a’ is silent) set out knowing the ‘how’s’ but not the ‘why’s’ of a photograph. It took a good amount of drifting on the road and dabbling with shooting advertisements, a film, weddings, events, exhibitions, copywriting and even selling booze to finally understand where the WHY really matters for him – photojournalism.

Sneha Rodrigues – Business Development Manager. Sneha has a background in hospitality and online marketing, having worked for Club Mahindra as Marketing Manager and C2C, a medical tourism company in Kuwait, as Business Development Manager. She’s a foodie with a blog on poetry, and her best kept secret is that she has a fabulous singing voice that she puts to good use around Goa. Nilesh Shetgaonkar, Administrative Assistant, is a happy-go-lucky Morjim native who prides himself on living life to the fullest. He spent seven years in Dubai and loves football, cricket and trivia.

Radhika Naik – Editorial Assistant. A Mapusa resident, Radhika enjoys siestas and, when awake, spending time with family. She was always a big fan of the news and is thrilled to be part of that world today. Music with a slow tempo is her favourite playlist. Victor Pereira– Distribution Team. Currently lives in Cavellossim after spending some time in New Delhi and Kerala. Victor gets a kick out of fidgeting with electrical equipment, and his claim to fame in the Goa Streets office is his winning combination of helpfulness and humility.

Vijay Gadekar– Distribution Team. Aside from being very handy in all things mechanical, Vijay is a big fan of football with an equal passion for quality beach time. Kunda Salkar – Office Assistant. A resident of Mapusa, Kunda goes through life with a permanent, and contagious, smile on her face. And it’s not just her delicious cooking that makes others smile.

Welcome to the Christmas Edition of Goa Streets! To capture the spirit of Christmas – the true spirit – we decided to take a step back and examine two sectors of the Goan population who are particularly vulnerable. Our story on the unprotected children of Goa focuses on all the kids in the state, especially the children of migrant workers, who do not attend school – a fundamental right of every Indian child. And our story on the plight of the elderly examines the many challenges, especially depression, faced by these ‘veterans of life’. In each story, we tell you what you can do to help, not just on Christmas, but throughout the year. Our piece on “A Goan Christmas” looks at the myriad ways the holiday is celebrated in Goa, from the traditional to the ultramodern, from church services to formal balls to parties on the beach. On these pages you will also find stories on Khyentse Norbu, a Buddhist monk who doubles as a filmmaker and on Vijay Sahgal, an orthopaedic surgeon who doubles as an artist (check out his exhibit this week at the Gallery Gitanjali in Panjim). Be sure not to miss our food stories on Fiesta and Little Door, and our piece on a wonderful musical event that took place earlier in the week at Teso Waterfront in Siolim. Because of the outpouring of reactions in Goa following the Supreme Court’s decision to recriminalize gay sex, we asked our readers to write in their comments on the issue – and, as promised, we have published the best of the comments in this edition of Goa Streets. Last but certainly not least, be sure to read our story on the Christmas Pop-Up Bazaar taking place this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 21st and 22nd, brought to you by the Paperboat Collective, with Goa Streets as Media Partner. This is going to be an amazing two days of fun and merriment, with shopping, workshops, family activities, drinks, entertainment and more, with part of the proceeds going to Child’s Play India, helping disadvantaged kids through music. We hope to see you there! Each week, Goa Streets brings you comprehensive listings on everything there is to see, do and eat in Goa, and each week we strive to live up to our promise of providing groundbreaking, worldclass journalism, written with style. We hope you enjoy reading our content as much as we enjoy producing it. And we take this moment to wish all of our readers, both in print and on www.goastreets.com, a happy, healthy and meaningful Christmas! The Goa Streets Team

Fiesta

A Culinary ‘Party’ of the Senses By Goa Streets

L

et’s begin this story with a short Spanish lesson. Fiesta is the Spanish word for ‘party’, and it’s a very fitting word to describe the feeling you get when you hang out at Fiesta, the highly appealing restaurant at the end of Tito’s Lane in Baga. This is, pardon the slightly clichéd description, truly a ‘party’ of the senses. Take the sense of sight, for instance. Chef/owner Yellow, one of the most recognized faces in the state, has succeeded in combining soft light, whimsical furnishings, Bohemian seating and colourful, Asia-inspired décor to create a visual Shangrila. The stone work, the built-in, cushioned-covered booths and the unusual cloth used to dress the tables take care of the sense of touch. Soft music far enough away from the bustle of Tito’s Lane pleases the ear, and with food as good as what’s offered here, the sense of smell takes care of itself. Which brings us to taste, Fiesta’s main attraction.

Café Inn

Light Bites Some superb international-style mini-meals and snacks, sandwiches, smoothies, wraps, salads, etc 8am to 10pm At near Wavelet Beach Resort, Palolem, Canacona

Casa Fiesta

Casa Fiesta is a good place to sample some choice Mexican specialties. The menu is comprehensive, with Tacos, Enchiladas, Burritos, Fajitas and other Mexican dishes. 8.30 am to 11 pm At Palolem Beach Road, Goa, +91 9823928548

Dersey’s

Multi Cuisine, European, Goan, Seafood Try the fish n chips with fillet of kingfish fried. Also try the fish curry rice. At Agonda beach Road, Canacona 9 am to 11 pm +91 832 2647503

There’s a reason the Waffles with Goat Cheese have become one of Yellow’s most sought after signature dishes. They are divine! A great way to start the meal. Next came the Seafood Paella, which was as good as any on offer in Madrid and Barcelona. That says a lot, but it’s true. Perfectly cooked prawns, crab, smoked tuna, calamari and mussels are layered over vegetable rice with a wonderfully nuanced flavour – all baked in a wood-fired oven. Speaking of seafood, we decided to take a risk, and order the Seared Tuna Fillet with Miso Sauce. The problem with this dish in a lot of restaurants is that kitchens tend to overcook it. Seared should mean just that. In other words, the tuna should be rare. At this particular evening at Fiesta, it was. And it was very good. Next on the menu: King Prawns baked in tomato-white wine sauce, topped with parmesan cheese. This dish, also baked in the wood-fired oven, was quietly delicious, as was the Crab Ravioli served with saffron cream sauce. For dessert we sampled the extremely aptly named Death by Chocolate, hot chocolate soufflé served with cold chocolate mousse and vanilla sauce, and the expertly prepared Tiramisu. Yes, in the end the party of the senses at Fiesta is really about taste. And you get a lot of it here. Offerings like the Thai Seafood Salad, the Wood-fired Pizza Mare, the Charcoal Grilled Tiger Prawns, the Steamed Lobster,

the Pork Tenderloin with Olive Oil and Herbs, the King Crab au Gratin and the Fillet Steak with Demi Glace all help turn the experience into one hell of a culinary Fiesta. Fiesta was originally a Portuguese summer villa built in 1932. The restaurant is set in a lush tropical garden atop sand dunes overlooking the Arabian Sea.

• The Food: Excellent European-inspired cuisine • The Ambiance: Whimsical • The Service: Very attentive • The Price: Covering the whole gamut from Rs 250 to Rs 1,950 (for the lobster) • Something Special: It’s now possible to rent out Fiesta for parties, weddings, anniversaries and birthdays • Where: At the end of Tito’s Lane. Childhoods Lost Goa’s Forgotten Children By Crespo D’Souza

T

his could well be Pavitra Vasvani’s last year in school. Eleven years old and fortunate to be studying in Std VII Lourdes Convent High School in Saligao, this daughter of a daily wage labourer from Bihar knows that going back to her village will mean the end of her education. Teary eyed, the dark complexioned girl approaches her favourite teacher to break the shattering news. “My father has said that next year onwards we have to go back to the village in Bihar,” she says, presaging the end of a dream. Unlike many of her peers from impoverished states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha, not only was she getting an education but also one in a relatively good school not too far from home. “My mother and me agree that we should stay back because Goa is a much better place to live in, but my father disagrees. He says that we cannot stay here longer because the work is irregular,” she said.

That Pavitra had any education at all put her in an elite group among the children of migrant workers. A study conducted by the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, a government programme to ensure education for all, identified 1,134 out-ofschool children during the last academic year. The NGO Children’s Rights Goa believes that official figure is too low, and that the actual number of children out of school could well be in the thousands. Overall, Goa has about 3 lakh school aged children, and the SSA found that nearly all the children of native Goans are in fact enrolled. The issue, then, is almost completely confined to the children of migrants. A visit to a small slum at Khobra Vaddo in the heart of Calangute tells this side of the story. Here the first thing that grabs you is the sight of children wandering about. If you take into account the disease and poverty they’re exposed to, in some of ways lack of education is just another malady on the list. Families here are divided into two categories – those who

A child on the side of a road plays with make-shift toys

stay throughout the year cleaning houses, tending gardens and the like; and those employed in shacks, tourism establishments and construction sites who are here only briefly. Baby Jai, is one such lady who travels where work is and has no fixed address. Hailing from Orissa, she says that “there really isn’t any point putting her two young kids in school” because they will be moving on soon enough. She offers another more disturbing reason. “The schools here say that the admissions are full and our kids remain left out.” While there is evidence to support the notion that some schools are turning kids away, it’s also true that many migrant families simply can’t be bothered with the paperwork. While government schools in villages do admit the children of migrant workers, it’s not clear what percentage of the migrant kids are actually enrolled. The Salesians of Don Bosco run a mobile school which caters to about 300 migrant kids. The bus moves from place to place where the children are located; it stays at each site for about three hours before moving to the next location. Baby Jai, a seasonal visitor to the state, says she comes from an agricultural family who work in the fields during the monsoons. Once the harvest is done, she travels in search of work to supplement the family’s meagre agricultural income. To be sure, not all these workers are here to work. Take the case of Sakkubai Kale, a middle aged migrant arrested on Dec. 14 after being found begging with a child in Calangute. The child was sent to a protective home for children in Merces, while the woman was discovered again begging outside Tito’s nightclub three days later. Of course it’s not just the children of migrants who are vulnerable in Goa. One teacher I spoke to who didn’t want to give his name to protect his privacy complained that many of his male students sleep in class, or worse, don’t show up at all. “At first this puzzled

me, after making a few inquiries what I heard shocked me - they tell me they go for ‘catering’,” he says, using the term to describe how the students moonlight as waiters at wedding and other parties that are never in short supply in a state whose USP is its party life. “I do not have a problem if they are earning a little pocket money while still in school. The problem that is simmering is that of children taking to alcohol while still in their teens,” the teacher said. “It’s a problem that is outside the news, but is one that is bigger than most would expect,” he said. While at the national level employing children under 14 years of age is a crime, several states have raised that figure to 16 or in some cases to 18. In Goa, the age limit is 14 as defined under the Goa Children’s Act. And then there’s the case of the stepfather in the North Goan village of Colvale who decided to remove his two stepsons – aged seven and nine – from a church-run primary school. Case workers suspect this man simply wants these kids out of the way, as they’re from a previous marriage and his wife and he now have a one year old and one month old baby of their own. “He said he wanted to put them in a boarding, but when I asked him to get me a letter from the boarding school where he is due to admit his kids, he had no answer,” said Alvito Cardozo, the school’s director. “Unless he can prove to me that he is continuing with his step children’s education, I will not allow them to be removed.” Explained Suzan D’Souza, coordinator of Childline, a public-private initiative that aids vulnerable children: “These kids are not his own, and he is literally giving them step-fatherly treatment… The two kids’ of the woman’s earlier marriage are being neglected.” Nishta Desai, head of the NGO Children’s Rights Goa said the government needs to be far more proactive in enforcing its own Right to Education Act, which stipulates that all children must be schooled. “There is also a need to place responsibility on others as well such as contractors/house owners renting out rooms (to migrant familes),” Desai said. The Goa Children’s Act stipulates that crèches, or educational centres, be established at worker employment sites “to the maximum extent of available resources”. Few, however, are actually built. Dr Samira Kazi of the government’s Goa State Commission for Child Rights did not answer or return calls for questions on her agency’s work in mitigating the plight of Goa’s vulnerable children.  ____ If you know of vulnerable children in need of help, call the hotline 1098 or contact Children’s Rights Goa at +91 9822983336

The Fun, The Funky, The Mad and The Holy By Pedro Menezes

I

t’s going to be an unusually loaded Christmas season for the denizens of the Calangute-Candolim-Anjuna beach belt, with two electronic dance music festivals promising to bring in additional thousands of tourists to the area this year. While it’s going to be fun for the party animals, it’s sure to be quite the challenge for resident negotiating their way through jam-packed roads to get to even more crowded markets, cheerfully festooned with Xmas buntings. Many Goan Christians will somehow make their way to their local churches for the midnight mass on Christmas Eve, soaking in a bit of holiness amid the hoards of tourists for whom Christmas in Goa means drinking, partying, lounging and making merry.

And, no, it’s not the Portuguese who started this seasonal madness in Goa. It was actually the hippies who made Goa a Christmas destination. When the counter culture first bloomed in the United States in the ‘50’s and ‘60’, a lot of Americans and other Westerners discovered Indian classical music and Indian mystic traditions. Scattered all over the country, they would meet up to celebrate Christmas because Goa is the most visibly Christian of all the states in India. And it doesn’t freeze during December. The musicians would jam in places like Calangute, Baga and Anjuna, which later hosted the first beach parties in Goa. The fame of these December beach parties soon spread – and the rest, like they say, is history. Says Harinder Singh, Managing Director of Percept, which organises Sunburn, “If you go back in history,

A nun carries a Christmas star to celebrate the coming Christmas Anjuna is the original party spot of Goa. It’s where the beach parties started. It’s the original home of electronic dance music. We are very happy to have Sunburn at Vagator (part of the Anjuna area).”

Christmas for Everyone While earlier it was the Western Europeans who found their way to Goa, now it’s the Russians who are flooding the state – and they get to celebrate Christmas two times, on December 25, and then again on January 7, the Russian Christmas. The leading nightclubs and party spots will host bashes on both dates. One of the nice things about Goa and India in general is that you don’t have to be Christian to love Christmas. “It’s not the same as Christmas at home, but lying on a hot beach on Christmas day knowing everyone at home is stressing over hot ovens, etc, is great,” says 60-year-old Anita from the UK, a regular at Christmas time in Goa. “Christmas abroad in a hot country is one of the best ways to spend that horribly cold time of the year,” says Eric, another European.

Traditional Christmas But for many Goan Catholics, Christmas is the most important day of the year. Preparations can begin weeks in advance. Traditionally Goan households made their own Christmas sweets like the neureos, kol-kols, marzipan, dodol and cakes. Others will bring out the old bamboo frames of their Christmas star and re-clad it with decorative paper. Many houses will have a small crib depicting the nativity scene with Mother Mary and Joseph keeping watch over the infant Jesus. Peter Carvalho from Candolim says, “It’s the time for the youngsters in the community to get together and form carol singing groups who will then visit all houses in our community to serenade their fellow Goan Catholics in the days leading to Christmas Day. And

some of the fat guys will become the friendly neighbourhood Santa Claus. Many will also have a Christmas tree with decorative lights. In the past people used to send and receive Christmas cards which would then be displayed along with the crib, but now in the age of the email, that tradition has all but faded away.” Everything is usually in place by late evening of December 24 and by midnight most of Catholic Goa heads to the local parish church or chapel for the midnight mass, which heralds the arrival of the Messiah. At least in the old days, no selfrespecting Goan Catholic would party on December 24 night. They only exchange greetings, hugs and kisses with their family and friends. The celebrations begin later in the day with a traditional Christmas lunch which in Goa has never meant stuffed turkeys, but always features a juicy, succulent, roast suckling pig. Plus sorpotel and some beef dishes. A good place to check out a Goan Christmas banquet is at the grand old lady of the Goan hospitality scene, Hotel Mandovi, who host their annual ‘Jantar de Natal’ on Christmas Day.

The Balls and Five Stars Most old-time Goan clubs, like Clube Nacional and Club Vasco da Gama have their traditional Christmas Balls on the night of December 25, and it’s always a very formal affair. You can only get in if you’re wearing a formal suit. All five-star and luxury resorts will also be having their Christmas bashes and treats, with some offering traditional Goan-style roast pork and others roast stuffed, turkeys. It’s also a good idea to head down to south Goa if you’re looking for a slightly more relaxed time this Christmas. Elsewhere, though, almost all Goan nightclubs and party hotspots will be rocking away with Christmas Eve gigs and Christmas Day parties. You can party non-stop throughout the whole period, from Christmas to New Year’s to Russian Christmas. Party on folks, and merry Christmas!

Goa Streets Readers Comment on the Supreme Court’s LGBT Ruling

O

n Dec. 11, the Indian Supreme Court reinstated a ban on gay sex between consenting adults by overturning a 2009 ruling by the Delhi High Court. Goa Streets asked our readers to comment on the issue, and here is a sampling of the responses.  Going to sleep with a heavy heart for India. I have had a full life. I care and bleed about the future Indian LGBT youth who deserve respect, dignity, human and civil rights that make them proud citizens. This is a black day for my beloved country. - Wendell Rodricks  Thinking of my friends in India who have to continue hiding who they are for fear of violence. - Roxanne Barretto

 Considering that Nature has retained homosexuality in many of her species for thousands if not millions of years, she must be having good reasons for doing so. Else the genetic and hereditary mechanisms that cause or contribute to homosexuality would have been removed from the gene pool via evolution by now. If Nature wants her creations to manifest same-sex attraction now and then, who are we to say this is unnatural? - José Lourenço  Draconian & Unfair ... INDIA will lag behind nearly all the Countries it seeks to emulate. I am not Gay, but I fully support Gay Rights, RESPECT & TOLERANCE !!! - Milton Rodrigues  There are more serious issues to be discussed in this country. Please don’t waste your time as if those who want to continue would stop. We have children dying of hunger and cold every day. Think about them. God may just bless you. - Mario Dmonty

 What does Bharat need to become a nation of the 21st Century? Modernization? Westernization? We want to make Bharat a ‘Shresht Bharat’. Congress wants to make India ‘HomoSecular’. Indian Nationalist late Shri Rajiv Dixit explains how this homosexuality movement in India is funded and backed by the Western countries and how it is related to clash of civilizations and economy. - Naresh Kachare

 No kissing, no holding hands, you can have sex only for procreation not otherwise, no ogling, no looking at the other gender (sex is a word not to be used), no atheism, no eating curd at night... How does one enforce such laws? Perhaps we should wear cardboard clothes and masks so one can't make out who's male or who's female? – Sheela Jaywant  Very very sad day...evolving Indian society does not need religious organisations forcing their will on our personal liberties through the judiciary. The silver lining is the legislature has been left free to make law, so let us hope those we elect will do so by granting

equal rights to LGBT and restore the spirit of the High Court judgement. - Laxmi Lobo

 Just another example of our bigotry. To hide behind the constitution is not jurisprudence. It’s judicial cowardice. I am sorry my dear gay brothers and sisters - we’re still not mature enough to accept people for who they are. - Faiz Dadarkar   India’s Supreme Court has taken a huge backward step at a time when much of the world is moving towards a more enlightened view of sexuality. Even the new Pope, heir though he is to a centuries old Judeo-Christian tradition of hostility to homosexuality, has softened that stance to ask, “Who am I to judge?” The Supreme Court has the power to judge, but Parliament can and should change that by passing a law that decriminalizes homosexuality between consenting adults with immediate effect. -Victor RangelRibeiro  Sexuality is a very private matter and should remain so.

People who are clamouring for it to be criminalised should understand that it’s the way they have been born. Sexuality is in-born and not learnt. People cannot be indoctrinated towards alternative sexuality. What would they do if their children or grandchildren in future are born that way? Would they hand them over to the police or file a case against them. Allwyn Rodrigues  It is a disgrace. India is moving backwards. Everybody has the right to love who they want. - Anne Lovett  I feel every person has the right to choose their partner. It doesn’t matter if that person chooses the same sex or the opposite sex. It’s that person’s choice... That’s it. - Nagesh Parab

 If the fathers of our nation have taught us anything, it’s that we should take what is rightfully ours, no matter how hard. It’s the same Indian blood that runs through the Indian LGBT community, and I’m sure they won’t give up. – Adino Gonsalves

t first glance, Khyentse Norbu, a.k.a His Eminence Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche, one of the most important incarnate lamas in Tibetan tradition and hailing from one of Bhutan’s noblest families, looks like any other Buddhist practitioner. Dressed in typical maroon robes, the funky rose tinted glasses provide the only hint of a nonconventional side- his double life as a filmmaker and writer. I was privileged to interview the good monk at the Panjim Marriott, where he was staying during the recent International Film Festival of India. Straight up, I have to ask – doesn’t Hollywood clash with Buddhism? “It’s true that members of my religion wouldn’t want to be associated with these elements of drugs, sex and materialism; I felt the same way, until a chance viewing of Bicycle Thieves and the Apu Trilogy made me realize that the impact of moving images and sounds can influence people. Also, a Buddhist teacher is free to use anything as a medium to share profound messages, be it chopsticks or a pen ”. Norbu ‘arrived’ in Hollywood in 1999, with his directorial debut,

The Cup, which made its world premiere in Cannes and became an international sensation; London’s Evening Standard labelled him ‘the hottest new talent’. A semi-autobiographical tale of a group of monks obsessed with the World Cup soccer finals, this movie changed people’s perception of these seemingly saintlike beings and made them appear more human. It had a cast and crew that consisted mainly of locals and was Bhutan’s first feature film. “It was essentially made in my backyard so I could practically roll out of bed and go to work”. Despite being an amateur production, most scenes only required a maximum of 3 takes, a fact the director puts down to the powers of meditation. Both his other two films, Travellers and Magicians, and Vara… a Blessing, have a magical mix of mysticism coupled with stunning cinematography. An interesting fact is that during the making of the former, many production decisions were arrived at using an ancient method of divination called Mo. Vara’s production was more of a professional affair, starting with a foreign location, Sri Lanka, and craft

contributions from across the globe, including from composer Nitin Sawhney -The Namesake, Midnight’s Children- and editor William Chang, who has worked in all of Wong KarWai’s movies. “I learnt a lot on this set as the crew didn’t have fixed ideas about me because of my other job in the spiritual world as a Rinpoche (teacher)”. I’m curious; is there a special kind of mediation that helps Norbu juggle his many lives? For in addition to filmmaking, teaching and contributing time to the NGOs he helped set up (White Lotus and Siddhart’s Intent), he’s written two books and is currently in the midst of translating the entire Buddhist canon from Sanskrit and Tibetan into other languages like English and Chinese. This mammoth project involves coordinating with over 50 universities and 200 translators worldwide. But his ultimate dream is to make a film on the life of Buddha. “It’s a humungous project and for that, I need to get used to the Indian flavour, mood and colour because this was his birthplace. I’m a big fan of India and feel an affinity with many of its practices, for example the deity Saraswati, who is shared by Hindus and Buddhists alike; Vara was conceived because of my fascination with Bharatnatyam. The world of cinema first pierced his consciousness at 19, via a TV playing at an Indian railway station; he was hooked and so filmmaking was a natural choice during his academic pursuit in the US where, landing a bit part in and acting as a consultant on the sets of Bernardo Bertolucci’s Little Buddha, proved to be “an overwhelming experience what with over 700 crew including Italian chefs for the meals”.

Moving on to the inevitable question re politics, I ask about his reaction to the immolations that have taken place in his home country. “Any form of violence, whether to oneself or others, is totally discourageable and should be condemned. But we must also try and understand the cause and conditions behind such acts”. At this point, Shahana Goswani, Vara’s superb lead actress, joins us for a quick chat. To my surprise, Norbu nudges my elbow playfully and whispers loudly, “you won’t get the real picture from her whilst I’m around”. But she convinces him to stay put and proceeds to give me a summary of her working experience with the ‘quirky’ director. “Just like the captain of a ship determines its course, Rinpoche’s lightness of being affected us all. It was the only set I’ve worked on with zero politics and where everyone was genuinely fond of each other. His directing style is backwards in some ways; he would ask me to do something physical without immediately explaining the emotion behind the act but in the end, it always helped in bringing out a special edge in the scene”. Does Rinpoche have any wise thoughts for our readers? “Make sure you watch all kinds of movies, not just Bollywood, because for the independent struggling filmmakers, it’s the audience that makes all the difference”. His own movie collection has Dirty Dancing sitting right next to Kurosawa’s Dodeskaden. Err, not quite the response one expected so I follow up with, any spiritual guidance? “In Buddhism, mindfulness is a big word. No matter how deluded you are, enlightenment is possible but the path will not always end in ‘happily ever after’”. Hmm… I’m not sure whether to feel happy or sad. Never mind, my favourite holiday is round the corner with its promise of carol singing and fairy lights. MERRY CHRISTMAS!! binaad@yahoo.com

hy is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in joint replacement showcasing his paintings in a major Goan art exhibit in one of the state’s most elegant galleries? Because his art is wonderful! Gallery Gitanjali will be displaying paintings by Dr. Vijay Sahgal, from the 20th to the 22nd of December. The show titled Colours of Life will be inaugurated by Sir William Mark Tully, the distinguished, award-winning former Bureau Chief of the BBC in New Delhi. At the age fourteen Vijay Sahgal found a mentor in his art teacher Rathin Mitra at the Doon School at Dehra Dun in northern India. He affirms being a selftaught artist who does not necessarily adhere to academic stipulations and who doesn’t mind crossing boundaries. His first painting “Lull before the Storm” earned him a gold medal at a national art competition at the Lalit KALA Academy in New Delhi, followed by another gold medal for his next creation.

A delightful exhibit displaying the works of Dr. Vijay Sahgal Specializing in joint replacement, he and his wife, who is also a doctor, spent over thirty years in the UK, and they often visited Goa. After retirement two years ago, he shifted to Goa and lives in Pilerne, where the rural landscape and ambiance are a constant source of joy and stimulation. The display of thirty paintings in semi abstraction are in a delightful colour pallet. There’s lots of detailing, intricate textures and forms in variegated

contemplative subjects, which can be read as a metaphor for relationships to nature, exploring the interplay of conventional and non-conventional elements. The cryptic reticence comes to the fore in an explosion of colours, and in the works on display of landscapes, ancient edifices, flora and geometrical shapes filled with energy. The result is lyrical, with an amalgamation of ideas that break genre moulds and explore a cross section of subjects in free flowing compositions with enigmatic imagery. His organized linear narrative with brush and pallet knife strokes make it clear he was influenced by maestros M F Husain and Van Gough, among others. One finds some surrealistic characterizations employing subverted motifs, extending a sense of nostalgia to the viewers. Working with oil on canvas and board, he also approaches sketching in pencil, and the collection of paintings exhibited has been created over a period

of time. Aside from his love of painting, he has an enviable collection of bonsai’s, a few of which are on display around the venue, augmenting the paintings. He says his latest interest is photography, and that he finds nature photography especially motivating. Though retired, he visits a hospital in Goa once a week to do volunteer work, and he spends a lot of time pursuing his hobbies. He has exhibited in Chandigarh and in the UK, and this is his first exhibition in Goa. _____ On exhibit till 22nd December at Gallery Gitanjali, in Panjim’s Latin Quarter (Fontainhas).

hen I visited the Nazareth old-age home in Navelim one recent afternoon, I was pleasantly surprised by the lucidity of one of the residents, a well-spoken woman who asked, “Are you a reporter?” When she heard that my specialization was in psychology, she shot a sharp question my way: “What can you say about us inmates? How would you judge us?” Caught off guard, I simply smiled at her. In this nation of the young and younger, where people start considering you old well before you hit 50, Christmas is a good time to pause a moment and reflect on the elderly among us – these veterans of life in their twilight years who’ve been around the block and from whom we have much to learn. Unfortunately, in our fast-paced, frenzied world, too many of these folks are being forgotten and neglected. During my afternoon at Nazareth, I met a 77-year-old woman who spent seven years in a psychiatric facility after being traumatized by her husband’s death 14 years ago. She’s lived at the Nazareth Home for the past seven years. Today, she

can’t feed herself or take medications on her own, but she’s one of the more beloved residents at the facility. Another 84-year-old woman I met is still quite independent, doing most things on her own. She’s been living at the Nazareth Home, run by the Sisters of the Holy Family of Sancoale in South Goa, for the past six years after her relations cut her off following her husband’s death. India has about 100 million elderly people aged 60 and above and is said to be one of the worst countries to grow old in. The Global Age Watch Index – 2013 (released by HelpAge International) ranked India at the 73rd spot out of 91 countries on the basis of social and economic well-being of its elderly. India scored poorly in all the four domains - income security, health status, employment and education and enabling environment. According to the Census 2011 data, 11.2% of Goa’s population is aged 60 years and above, giving the state the second largest aged population after Kerala as a percentage of the overall population, as per the last Census. According to U.N. figures, India’s life expectancy at birth is 65, compared to a world average of 68 (these figures take into account all those who die young, so, happily, if you’re 67 that doesn’t mean you should be making funeral arrangements). A Helpage India report from 2010 places life expectancy in Goa at 70 years. Of all the challenges faced by Goa’s elderly population, perhaps none is more acute than depression – a common malady among the old here, according to a research study by V. Patel et al in 2001.

The reasons cited were family conflict, financial difficulties, worries about children, neglect and abuse, loneliness and boredom. The study revealed a widespread feeling among the old that they were given little public respect and that young people did not enjoy their company. Another common feeling was a desire not to be dependent on their children. The study said Goa’s elderly were in need of moral support, love and affection - and that families needed to be educated about their needs and desires. Gonzaga da Gama, in his paper presented at the Eleventh Canadian Congress on Leisure Research in 2005, concluded that death was not characterized by fear or anxiety, rather a natural passage among aging individuals in Goa. Despite many challenges, the elderly displayed will and determination in how they lived their lives. Still, happiness often eludes the seniors among us. One woman over 80 years old, a grandmother of 14 who like other older people interviewed for this story did not want her name used, had this to say about her life at her son’s home: “I don’t wish to stay here. I feel so lonely. None of my grandchildren sit and talk to me. I have requested my children to respect my wish to stay in the Alberque (old-age home).” An observation worth taking note of: All the nuns running the Nazareth Home seemed immensely satisfied with the missionary work of serving the old and the needy. Psychologist Clifford DeSilva says, “The trouble with old age is that all of us will get there one day unless we die young. The aged feel helpless due to their diminishing physical abilities, stamina and economic dependence. This is what makes them cranky and cantankerous. A positive attitude that they are still individuals of worth can stop them from feeling like second class citizens.” Like most people, I am close to a number of elderly folks, including my 76-year-old father Fideles Pereira. He enjoys spending time with people his own age, but laments there aren’t more facilities available for him and his friends.

“We would like a clubhouse or some premises reserved exclusively for us senior citizens so that we can meet up regularly for recreation. I am quite sure it’s a worthy exercise, but nobody seems to be taking note of it.” What measures has our government implemented for the elderly? This year in October, Minister for Social Welfare Mahadev Naik announced that his department is working on strengthening schemes for senior citizens and will increase the number of recreation centres. The Dayanand Social Security Scheme (DSSS), which provides a monthly dole of Rs 2000 to senior citizens, was introduced in 2002 by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar during his first term in office. Goa has a total of 1,18,000 DSSS beneficiaries and the monthly financial outgo for the scheme is 23 crore. Though Goa was rocked by a DSSS scam as some bogus beneficiaries were milking the scheme, it is still in force and it benefits many seniors. The National Old Age Pension Scheme (sponsored by the central government) provides a pension for the elderly who live below the poverty line. Village Panchayats in theory also dole out some amount for the welfare for ‘needy elders.’ But the process is usually so cumbersome that few older persons avail themselves of it. The elderly can avail of bus travel concession when travelling in KTC buses or commuting by trains, too. Air India offers concession schemes for senior citizens (50% of normal economy class fare for those meeting the criteria). A few pharmacies in Goa also give concession for senior citizens on purchase of medicines. Goa needs more of these health care facilities, schemes, retirement homes, concessions and clubs exclusively for our old. What’s most important, however, is our love. We need to give more of it, and not just on Christmas. Looking for something truly meaningful to do this Christmas? Why not visit the elderly at the Nazareth Home in Navelim.
