ZimaFest presents a dichotomous mix of a classic all-round music festival that has live AND DJ performances, at the same time starting a new trend in the Indian festival environment. The event will be held in the heart of Goa – Candolim Beach, at the La Brise luxury club. The two days are all about music! On 24th and 25th January ZimaFest presents a musical program with performances by Russian and Indian rock bands. The cult Russian rock group Alisa boasts a rich history of thirty years and provocative imagery. Dolphin, also from Russia, is a poet and experimenter, whose work fans have long loved for honest and candid lyrics. Parikrama, from India, is a unique group from New Delhi, who have played more than 3,000 concerts. Also playing are two of India’s coolest bands, Madboy/ Mink and F-16’s (funk and electro-pop). ZimaFest has not forgotten the fans of electronic music and has brought together

great artists from the EDM community. Headlining Saturday 24th evening will be India’s Karsh Kale, who over the past 12 years as a solo artist, producer, composer and DJ has turned the world of electronic fusion upside down and helped create a whole new genre of music and culture. And at the center of Sunday’s program will be DJ Avalon from the UK - one of the most famous representatives of the international psy-trance scene. He has worked with such DJs as Tristan, Astrix, Loud, and is currently ranked first in many charts with his new creation «Avalon remixes». Also at the festival will be highly acclaimed DJs from Belgium, Argentina, Switzerland, India and many other countries. Goa’s Tourism Woes

The Real Story Behind The Low Numbers, Empty Hotel Rooms and Overall Slump In Goa’s Tourism Lifeline By Crespo D’Souza

T

here’s talk of shack owners shutting shop as early as January, hotel rooms going vacant despite big discounts and beach beds finding no takers. And yet, at the other end of the line there were two big EDM festivals, a well-attended religious event (the St Francis Relics Exposition), and a glut of tourists choking the roads and leaving the beaches littered with liquor bottles. So what’s the consensus? Is the season lean or mean? Tourism officials contacted for this article said they are in the process of compiling arrival data for November and December, information that won’t be available until next week. But an avalanche of anecdotal evidence, combined with a look at hotel occupancy, restaurant patronage and other indicators, reveals that something is seriously askew with this year’s tourist season. Hotels have had a hard time filling their rooms, even during the normally packed Christmas/New Year’s period – despite slashing their rates by as much as 70 percent. With the exception of a handful of popular eateries, many high-end restaurants are experiencing significant declines in business – as have have hundreds of beach shacks along the once bustling coastline. The question is not just HOW MANY are arriving, but also WHO is arriving? The answer seems to be fewer Russians and more Gujaratis, fewer jetsetters and more hippies, fewer professionals and more backpackers. With both the Russian economy and the ruble in the dumps, the fall in Russian arrivals is readily explainable. But why are Brits, Scandinavians and Germans, along with quite a few moneyed tourists from places like New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, also staying away from Goa? One top reason is earlier hotel rates, which had grown to be prohibitively expensive in recent years, especially during peak season. Even for domestic tourists, heading to places like Thailand or Sri Lanka began to make more sense financially. And then there’s the ubiquitous garbage lining the roads and beaches, turning what’s supposed to be a dream holiday

destination into an eye sore. Huge, unruly crowds in areas like Tito’s Lane or the Calangute beach were a turn-off, stripping paradise of its elbow room. And that’s not to mention the infrastructure needs – roads, sewage, water, etc – that have failed to keep pace with Goa’s development. "I used to come to Goa every year for New Year’s to celebrate with some friends. But now I've stopped. You can't move anywhere," a professional based in Mumbai said, referring to the traffic jams

in the state. And yet now that hotel rates have come down and the crowds have thinned, the 2014-2015 tourist season may come to be seen as a necessary correction – setting the stage for a healthier showing next year. “Seasons like this help separate the men from the boys,” said one hospitality industry stakeholder who didn’t wish to be named. Those in possession of staying power – and who know how to attract and keep a loyal clientele – are the ones

who will survive, he said. Goa clearly wants to attract high-spending tourists, but the goal is hindered by the presence of so many low-spending ones already here – especially the so-called “male mob” tourists, large groups of men who arrive in Goa, sleep in vehicles, relieve themselves in fields and spend their days and nights getting drunk. Add to that the garbage, the touts and an assortment of other woes. “In the long term these things will surely have an effect. But if one is talking about this season in particular it cannot be the garbage and harassment of touts alone. They have always been around,” said Ernest Dias, proprietor of Sita travel agency, which mainly caters to Russian tourists. For him and Sita, of course, the fallout in Russia from the plunge in oil prices and the Ukraine debacle is the most important factor explaining this year’s malaise. “It’s nothing but the Russian economy and the weakening of the currency,” he said, adding that Russian arrivals are down 30 percent this year. Goa’s tourism is constantly changing. If in recent years Russians started replacing Brits and Germans, now it appears other Eastern Europeans are replacing Russians. On a recent flight between Mumbai and Goa, this writer witnessed more than half the plane occupied by tourists from Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and other CIS countries. And they weren’t charter tourists but people on regular flights. The recently enacted Visa on Arrival facility extended to tourists from some 40+ countries is good news, to be sure. Officials at the Goa airport reported that the facility has now been extended to foreign nationals as follows: Russia (595), Ukraine (430), USA (25), Germany (15), UAE (7), Australia (4) Philippines (4), Israel (3), Jordan (3), New Zealand (2), Brazil (1) Finland (1), Kenya (1) Norway (1) and Singapore (1). While the Visa on Arrival facility is still in a nascent stage and the numbers are not particularly high, stakeholders are pleased it exists. Making it easier for tourists to arrive is a step in the right direction. The harder part is making their visit wonderful once they’re already here.

The Wise Words of Anupam Gulati, the Goa Marriott’s Executive Chef By Shubham Gupta

W

hat does it feel like to be the master of one of the finest kitchens in Goa? Challenging and invigorating at the same time, the work is hard but entirely rewarding. Let’s hear it straight from Anupam Gulati, the recently appointed Executive Chef at the Goa Marriott Resort and Spa, who sat down with me for a frank discussion.

SG: How has the experience with serving Marriott been so far? AG: Well to be very honest it’s not easy to adjust in a new set up when you were born and brought up in a different one … But I guess life is all about change and change is good. So far it is indeed one of the best times of my life, SG: If you weren’t a chef, what would you have been? AG: I love bikes and I am sure I would have been very close to them, could be a tattooed biker. SG: What or who has been your inspiration for making your way to become a chef? AG: My early lessons on food and cooking were inspired from my parents. My father is a foodie he would take us places and expose us to different cuisines and eateries, and my mother …she is the best. SG: What are your thoughts about street food? Where in India is the best street food? AG: I love eating in Dhabas Shacks and Thelas as I believe that you get a pure unadulterated form of food there … I miss chana bhatura of Delhi and galouti kebabs of Lucknow. Delhi lives up to the scene and is on top of my list. This could be because of its cosmopolitan nature, and I miss the hustle bustle of it, those weekly markets and all. And on the other hand, Lucknow because of its Nawabi Andaaz. And of course Goa… rawa fried fish, balchao and ras omelette can’t be ignored either. SG: Which cuisine do you love cooking the most? Other than that, which cuisine are you a fan of anyway?

AG: I have always been a fan of Indian food irrespective of the state. I enjoy it from my heart, though I would love to hone my skills in Japanese. SG: When you look back to the 14 years of experience with Oberoi Hotels all across the country, did you ever picture yourself in Goa? How is the Goan air treating you anyway? AG: I had always been a fan of the place, the food, the Portugal influence, the stories and many more. All so interesting and colorful, but unfortunately couldn’t get a chance earlier … And yes, now I am here and enjoying every breath of it. SG: Are there any tips that you might want to share with our readers who might want to pursue cooking as a profession? AG: Learn the basics and learn from anybody and every body. Attitude and work ethics are very important. Never think that you have learnt it all … There is no age or designation for learning. Never bother about what you are paid. Do a good job and money will follow. 

a Brise launched its first Sunday brunch on January 11, with guests soaking in the brilliant weather and matching hospitality amid lots of laughter and good cheer. The beach restaurant and lounge in Candolim, which was opened in December, had a delectable spread and glasses of bubbly going around on one of the most perfect winter days Goa has seen in a long time. Moët & Chandon Champagne and Karltenberg beer flowed freely as guests enjoyed the cool breeze and stunning views of perfectly manicured lawns by the sea. Renowned French DJ Shy-O spun some magic on the decks, accompanied by Goa’s own Elvis Lobo on the guitar. Together, they captivated the vibrant crowd of locals and visitors alike who enjoyed delectable food and drinks on the deck. The spread at the live counters included a tantalising mix of seafood such as lobsters, tiger prawns, Calamari, Eel, Clams, Oyster, Crab, Muscles, Octopus and lots morestraight from the blue Arabian Sea.Succulent Lamb and Pork Chops and Beef and Chicken Picattas were among the hot favourites, all of which could be accompanied by a choice of BBQ/Butter garlic/ Pomeery mustard/ Dijon mustard/ Cocktail/Peri peri sauce. There was also a vegetarian buffet topped with decadent dessertsand fresh tender coconut for the asking. Guests milled around under the shade of layered shack umbrellas, lounging on wicker couches and lounge chairs, watching children frolic near the vibrant greenery and water bodies that make La Brise so much more refreshing than expected. Now and again, enchanting entertainment would break out – European dancers in shocking

pink and white laced with pretty flowers, or twirling umbrellas and bouncy skirts, and even African acrobatic dancers with some jaw-dropping moves. Among some of those who stopped by for the Sunday brunch were Nikhil Desai, Director of Tourism Ameya Abhyankar and his family, members of Skal Hospitality including Reshma Alves and Ernest Dias, and a host of other well-known names from the industry. General Manager, Manish Dayya and his team were the perfect hosts, leaving everyone more than satisfied with the hospitality. The gorgeous beach bar lounge had earlier hosted the after parties for the popular Vh1 Supersonic electronic dance music festival in December and an Ultimate New Year’s Eve Beach Party that had revellers wishing the night would never end. Give the weekend that special touch with the spectacular Sunday Brunch at La Brise. Nowhere else is better. About La Brise La Brise beach restaurant lounge brings you one of the most memorable sunset dining experiences in Goa. Situated against a breath-taking seascape, the restaurant elevates your food and drinks experience with a delightful ambience. A Delightful Addition to the Goan Culinary Scene

N

By Steven Gutkin and Marisha Dutt

o matter where you are in the world, finding food that is true to its own origins is never an easy task – especially when the food in question comes from distant lands. The reason is simple. Restaurateurs need to make a living, not prove a culinary point. So if that means altering the taste of foods to accommodate the local palate – even at the cost of authenticity – most don’t hesitate to do so. That Koi, a new restaurant located just behind Snip Salon & Spa on the CandolimCalangute strip, is wholeheartedly resisting this temptation is a testament not just to the management’s commitment to culinary honesty, but also to the worldliness of Goa, where growing numbers of patrons are looking for foreign cuisines that taste just as they’re supposed to. Yes, there’s no shortage of restaurants in Goa that call themselves “Asian.” But to find one where the Bulgogi tastes like it could have been prepared at a street stall in Seoul, or TURN TO PAGE 8

the Prawn Tempura would receive high marks were it offered to diners in Tokyo itself, is something to be celebrated. Koi, the latest venture of Vikram Singh and partners, is itself a kind of celebration. With offerings from all across Asia – Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Korea, China, Indonesia, Laos, and, of course, India – this place is the first of its kind in Goa. An elegant dining experience that stays true to the real flavours of the food’s originating cultures. A chic, warmly appointed venue (a classic Indo-Portuguese bungalow) boasting a state-of-the-art wine cellar, a cozy bar that would hold its own in any major world capital, and indoor and outdoor seating that evokes an undeniable Asian sensibility. The Tom Yum Goong soup is not adulterated with too much coconut milk, the Pork Belly with Chinese Greens is not falsified with added sugar, and there is no defiling of the Thai-style Hot Basil & Chicken by holding back on the riotous spices of Thailand. It’s

OK that on our first visit to Koi (we’ve been there twice) the Miso soup lacked a bit of oomph. The other offerings made up for it a hundred times over. Flavour – and the pure joy of food – is what Koi is bringing to the table. And nowhere is this more evident than in what is perhaps the restaurant’s most unique offering, a long “teppan”, or Japanese griddle, serving up some fabulous teppanyaki. On one recent evening, a group of eight friends sat around the teppan and watched the show – chefs expertly preparing a teppanyaki “tasting” featuring Larb Kai (of course this is a Thai dish, but its preparation on a Japanese teppan can be forgiven as artistic license),

Homemade Gyoza, Duck Foie Gras, Kai Yang Chicken (again, Laotian, not Japanese, but who cares?), Mirin Glazed Beef, Snapper with Lemon Salt and Seafood Street Noodles. With the exception of the snapper, which was under-seasoned, it’s fair to say this tasting was a smashing success – because of both the flavour of the food and the regalement of the show. Of course this is all reminiscent of Benihana, but without the colourlessness of the ubiquitous American restaurant chain. Koi brands itself as Goa’s “premier Asian fusion restaurant.” With flavours as authentic as these, however, there’s really not that much to “fuse.” The one notable, and entirely happy, exception is the Mandarin Crepe Suzette with homemade ice cream, which is French and Chinese at the same time. It’s also very, very delicious. Kudos to Koi, the new, eminently welcome kid on the Goan foodie block.

• Food: True Asian, very tasty • Ambience: Warm, inviting, chic • Service: Took some time for the drinks to arrive, but no complaints after that • Price: Ranging from Rs 250 for the Burnt Garlic Fried Rice to Rs 2,500 for the Sleepy Lobster With Tamarind • Something Special: A no brainer. New Entertainment Sport Set To Take Goa By Storm By Sinead McManus

G

oa is introducing India to a new kind of rush, mixing the throb of nightclub entertainment with the nail biting hush of contact sport. Get ready for Combat Cage Fight Night. Combat Cage Fight Night combines sport and entertainment in an incredible spectacle featuring some of India’s – and Goa’s – most talented athletes performing stunning martial arts feats. It’s the chance to experience an electric vibe, an ambience charged with anticipation, and heart-pounding moments before a jaw-clenching finale at a nightclub. With the support of the tourism department, Goa is about to host this new kind of entertainment sport, where sweat and tears are part of the game, where the better man or woman will need to give everything he or she has got to come out tops. This is Combat Cage Fight, an entertainment sport that makes anything you’ve seen in Goa so far look like child’s play. Scheduled for Sunday, January 18, the Fight Night will take place at Tito’s Courtyard in Baga, where 12 fighters from across the country will go head to head in a six-bout contest that will challenge them physically and mentally as they fight for the top prize. Combat Cage fighting is a safe, regulated sport involving a combination of a number of martial arts techniques fought

inside a metal cage. A variety of traditional combat modes are involved, including boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, Muay Thai, karate, Taekwondo, wrestling, judo and others to overpower the competitor. Unlike traditional modes where one can to an extent anticipate the type of attack and defence possible based on the underlying structure of the combat mode, this free-style event forces fighters to react instinctively. Even thinking is out of the question! It is fast, intelligent and seemingly, if not actually, dangerous – competitors do not wear any obvious protection and must thwart the other’s attempts to take them down by their own skill. This is a first-of-its-kind event in India, where the complexity of these technical self-defence skills will merge with the pulsating vibe of a nightclub experience with sensational acts in between bouts. Some of the best DJs will perform at the event, including world renowned Eve Carey, taking the experience to a whole new level. On Saturday, January 17, Combat Cage Fight will hold the weigh-ins for competitors at Café Mambo in Baga, where visitors will have the chance to get up close and personal with all the competitors and choose who they would like to support the following day. The weigh-ins include all major standard categories, from bantamweight to heavyweight for men and from straw weight to heavyweight for women, although it is not expected that any of the fighters in this Combat Cage Fight Night will fall in the heavyweight categories. Goa has two competitors in the fray – Nelson Paes from

Thivim and Soniya Parab from Chapora. Both have been training vigorously for the past six months to grab the debut Fight Night laurels for Goa. Paes left a life of corporate humdrum behind in Pune to pursue his thirst for sport. Finding his footing in kickboxing in Pune, he has never looked back since, his interest in contact sport continuing to grow as he mastered a variety of techniques. An alumnus of Monte de Guirim high school, he has already trained in boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling and the basics of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, preparing for fights by learning as much as he can about his opponent to gauge his strengths and weaknesses. Parab, on the other hand, is a master of boxing, having won her first fight against a male opponent since there were no females in her category. The former student of Guardian Angel High School in Curchorem has already made Goa proud, participating in every National Games since 2004 and being Goa’s only gold medallist at the Guwahati games in 2007. She is also a professional boxer under the Professional Boxing Federation of Russia and has competed against international opponents. Other competitors participating in the Combat Cage Fight Night include Alfaan Salim Hashmi from Devlali in Maharashtra, Amit Kumar from Delhi, Bharati Poswal from Bhivani in Haryana, Michael Pereira from Mumbai, Rohit Pundeer from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, Sachin Panwar from Haryana, Shrikant Shekhar from Orissa, Suraj Bahadur from Jalandar in Punjab, Tajodhin Sayeed from Nasik and Vivek Sharma from Delhi. Goa’s Parab will be pitted against Bharati Poswal in the co-main event, while Paes will fight in the main event. This will be one of India’s leading entertainment sports that also happens to encourage women to take on selfdefence skills and showcase their talent to the world. The first four bouts will have three rounds of three minutes each, while the last two main events will have five rounds of three minutes each. Performances between bouts, in addition to the musical offerings, will include fire dancers and stunning ring girls in the cage, among other artistes. Combat Cage Fight has ensured that strict security and medical arrangements – including bouncers, paramedics, an on-site doctor and ambulance – are all on hand to maintain order and preparedness in case of any untoward event. Referees will also regulate the bouts according to a pre-decided set of rules. The main sponsor of the event is

Magners Irish Cider in association with Vh1. Other supporters include Café Mambo, Go Pro, XXX Tequila and Goa Tourism. It is powered by Tito’s and VIVA GOA magazine, with What’s Up Goa being the online media partner and Spangle as the digital marketing partner. Manipal Hospital has come on board as the medical partner for the event. As a home-grown event, Combat Cage Fight is set to break into a new level of entertainment in India, bringing glamour to combat sport and an edginess to the

nightclub experience. Discover the thrill of adrenaline as your favourite fighter defends and attacks, gasping as s/he takes the punches and cheering as s/he throws them back. So, are you up for the fight? Post your images on Facebook or tweet your reactions to the adrenalinepumping action on Twitter with #Upforthefight.

The Chameleon speaks to Nirmal Kulkarni, a passionate herpetologist and an Eco-Warrior, who is silently building an army of conservationists and changing the way people see their envirnoment.

W

hen writing about a specialist in reptiles and amphibians, one must be very, very careful. I had the privilege of travelling with Nirmal Kulkarni on a Conservation Outreach program across Goa and Karnataka, and I say this very seriously, he is completely out of his mind! Nirmal is always on the lookout for snakes. Be it the King Cobra, the Pit Viper or a Python. The more venomous it is, the more exciting the hunt is for him. He always has a snake hook attached to his belt loop, and is willing to go to great lengths to simply ‘check them out’ in their natural habitat. “This is my vice. I have none other.” A Bachelor in Applied Arts from the Goa College of Art, Nirmal also holds a Masters in Environment and Ecology from the Indian Institute of Environment and Ecology, New Delhi. In addition, he has completed a year long course in Herpetology from the Bombay Natural History Society. For the last 16 years, Nirmal has

researched, mapped and documented the intense biodiversity of the Western Ghats, especially the Mahdei region. He has published 'The Goan Jungle Book', offering a vivid description of the state’s breathtaking ecology. By establishing the Mahdei Research Centre, Goa’s first independent field research station, he has created a single platform that trains young naturalists and brings communities and wildlife enthusiasts together. His other base is the Hypnale Research Station at Kuveshi, Karnataka. Nirmal has been working tirelessly to help conserve the forests of the Western Ghats, by providing alternative livelihoods with less impact on the environment. Nirmal is also a director at the Wildernest Nature Resort, one of the most important (and beautiful) conservation centres in the state. Apart from being an EcoNinja, Nirmal has been a key player in recruiting and motivating grass roots activists. “We need more people on our side,” he says “This is no longer a job for just a few professionals. Unless we have the support of each and every human being to become aware of their natural surroundings, who can respect it, conserve and preserve it, we will not stop.” For this reason, Nirmal initiated CORT (Conservation Outreach Road Trip), where several people accompany Nirmal to the natural reserves of the Western Ghats, traveling in a Skorpio car, which is brimming with back-packs, equipment and an up-to-date medical kit. “Every CORT trip has a photographer, a writer, a wildlife enthusiast and a researcher accompanying me, and this ensured that a detailed

report and reality check was done on field issues that concern the forests of the areas we visited. With the help of images, video shoots and journal entries and sketches, we generated stories for popular as well as scientific interest.” Through the CORT trips, Nirmal has witnessed the heartfelt commitment of field staff of the forest departments of Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra. He has explored the stunning beauty of each of those states. “This, for me is sheer bliss.” CORT has also generated a new breed of wildlife warriors for the Western Ghats (myself included), whose work will define the way these forests are viewed by everyone else. Collecting knowledge about one’s environment is a delightful habit, and one that’s best inculcated at an early age. “One must be able to look at a bird or a tree in their neighborhood and know the basic characteristics and nature of it, and so, if they notice anything odd, they must be able to bring awareness about the same.” Nirmal has initiated plans to create Nature Clubs in schools, so that children are encouraged to observe and document. This is a clever way to involve parents as well. The Children’s Outreach Program extends to 30 schools across 3 states, and is the backbone of his awareness initiatives. Nirmal has also reached out to outdoor sports enthusiasts, urging them to record and document

the species of wildlife during their adventures. “I call this my Second Line of Defense, where we are creating a younger generation of people who help us with our mission. We call this CITIZEN SCIENCE, where the common people come to contribute to data collection, and over time, this becomes a way of life.” Nirmal has also worked as a volunteer with the Wildlife Conservation Society, estimating prey for tigers in the Nagarhole Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka, and as a group team leader on a Biodiversity documentation Programme at the Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary, Arunachal Pradesh. He is also involved in data collection and consultancy services on eco-tourism and wildlife research projects in six states, including Goa, Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. In 16 years of ground work with communities, field staff, researchers and students, Nirmal has used a combination of science, photography and activism to spark what he hopes will become an environmental revolution. He concludes, “If we can sustainably use the infrastructure we already have, it will have far reaching advantages. The Earth gives back what we give Her. To respect our land and all the flora and fauna is our primary survival resource.” For more information on his programs, please check www.goawildwatch.blogspot.com www.mahdeiresearchcenter.org www.wildernest-Goa.com

By Perin Ilavia

ensorium, the wonderful arts festival now taking place at Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts, is focusing on photography and how it intersects with other mediums such as literature, cinema, music and installation art. The festival is jointly directed by 57-year-old Prashant Panjiar, founder of the Delhi Photo Festival, and writer and novelist Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi. Among the participants are bestselling historian professor William Dalrymple, acclaimed artist Dayanita Singh, Oscar nominated script writer Sooni Taraporevala, Farrokh Chothia (with her stunning photographs of jazz greats), and photographers Anusha Yadav, Sohrab Hura, Adil Hassan, S Biswas and Sudeep Sen. There’s a handmade photo books exhibition curated by Regina Anzenberger and an exhibit called ‘Macondo’ by Italian photographer Fausto Giaccone - an evocative tribute to writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Among the best self-taught articulate photographers in India, Prashant grew up in Patna, and did his MA in Political Science from Poona University. He moved

to Delhi in 1981, joined mainstream journalism 1984 with the Patriot newspaper, moved to India Today in 1986 and in 1995 joined the Outlook Group of publications as Associate Editor in charge of photography. He left Outlook in 2001 and became a full-time independent photographer specializing in editorial and documentary photography. He served on the jury of the World Press Photo Awards in Amsterdam in 2002 and the China International Press Photo Competition in 2005. He has contributed frequently to Time magazine, and runs his own syndication firm ‘Livewire Images.’ In 2000 he held an acclaimed photo exhibition ‘Kings & Commoners’, and in 2004 published “India: The Definitive Images.” He is co-founder of the “Nazar Foundation,” a non-profit trust founded with senior photographer Dinesh Khanna. It mentors young photographers, conducts workshops, hosts interactions and events, publishes work, and holds a biennial photo festival. Here are excerpts from a recent

conversation I had with Prashant. Perin Ilavia: What are your views on photography as a profession? Prashant Panjiar: There are no easy steps to becoming a great photographer. This is one profession where you have to prove yourself not just to your audience, but also to yourself every time you make an image. And, you are only as good as your last picture. In photojournalism job opportunities are few and there are long periods of struggle involved before you get financially comfortable. It’s also a very unforgiving profession. If you don’t have a passion for the medium, don’t join this profession. PI: When did you get interested in photography? PP: After my BA, I got simultaneously interested in photography and journalism. I spent a year travelling around India especially in Bihar, working on a research project on the Naxalite movement and that’s when I decided to pursue photojournalism. PI: What was your motivation to be a photo-journalist? PP: It was a great time to be a journalist. This was the heyday of journalism in the country, just after the Emergency. Life magazine was publishing images of the Vietnam War. Being interested in photography, the most exciting career was naturally photo journalism. PI: What are the salient features of organizing a festival like this? PP: First comes the creation, the imagining of a concept, then populating it with planning the exhibitions/events and choosing the artist and works according to an assigned budget. Then comes the actual production of the festival, getting prints, designing the displays and laying out the exhibitions. There is also a lot of back-end work that does not get highlighted easily. For Sensorium, the creating of the graphics and brand identity was done by Gopika Chowfla, a team was formed to plan the social media strategy, create awareness and nitty-gritties of the event. The actual production was handled by Sunaparanta, who provided us with the necessary infrastructure and the production team was led by Siddharth Naik.

PI: What was the basis on which you chose the artists for this festival? PP: Once the concept of looking at photography was in place at the intersection of other arts including literature, cinema, music, dance and theatre, I started looking at works that interfaced with the arts. Providentially, I had already encountered Fausto Giaconne’s book Macondo, the World of Gabriel Garcia Marquez … a beautiful work that sought to discover a mythical place immortalized in one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century. And after that it was easier to start looking for works that related to history, cinema, music, personal narratives and installation that combined mediums of art. As founder and creator of the Delhi Photo Festival and mentoring many young photographers, I keep abreast with contemporary photography, using this knowledge to choose the artists. It took from March 2014 to December 2014, nine months, the same time it takes for a human baby to be born! PI: What is your view on digital enhancement of photographs? PP: The limits of digital enhancement or alteration are to be proscribed by the reason for which it is being made. If the photograph intends to reflect or tell the truth of “things as they are,” then the limits of digital enhancement have to be within the accepted limits of darkroom techniques. But if it is an imagined work in the realm of art, then anything is allowed. PI: How does on differentiate between good and bad photography? PP: A good photograph is not just what it shows, but how it does that. Great photographs have an almost magical quality. First they appeal to your senses, your emotions and only later reveal the meanings and information that are embedded in them. Sensorium is privately supported by Raj and Dipti Salgaocar, and shows at Sunaparanta, voted among the five best arts institutions in India by Forbes. Raj's daughter Isheta is part of the team. The events continue till January 25th, 2015. At Sunaparanta, Goa Centre for the Arts, Altinho – Panjim

16  Arts & Entertainment structured institutions as sessions of a seminar, biennales are the coffee break where one can experience flashes of insight. You are known primarily as an artist. How are you going about this shift in role, to becoming curator? Jitish: The main shift from making art to curating was perhaps the shift in ambience from the solitary reflections in one’s studio, to a space of dialogue with numerous artist colleagues. From the start I felt that the biennale must produce themes rather than reproduce a pre-meditated curatorial theme, where exhibition-making echoes the very creative properties of art-making. My letters to artists were not a thematic curatorial note but a sharing of intuitions in the form of ideas and imagery. These have become the co-ordinates of a project, which is non-linear and layered. Tell us a bit about your curatorial journey, the research and selection process. How do you arrive at the artists and works to be featured in the Biennale? Jitish: Two chronologically overlapping, but perhaps directly unrelated historical episodes in Kerala

Kallat was in Goa recently for the stunning arts festival Sensorium, now on at Sunaparanta

J

itish Kallat is a 40-year-old contemporary Indian artist who lives and works in Mumbai, the city of his birth. He works with painting, largescale sculpting, photography and video art, employing a bold visual language that takes inspiration from both European and Asian influences. His work often reflects images from modern advertising and urban consumerism, giving his creations a unique sensibility with themes of survival, pain and hope. Jitish is also Artistic Director of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, an international exhibition of contemporary art held in Kochi, Kerala – one of the most important art events in the country. He was in Goa recently to speak about photography at the arts festival Sensorium, currently taking place at Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts, (Sensorium’s theme this year is photography). Jitish recently spoke about his journey from artist to curator, and the influences that drive his work. Here are excerpts:

Dayanita Singh’s ‘Dear Mr. Walter’

Can you very briefly reflect on the figure of the curator in the contemporary art world? Jitish: In the last two decades the figure of the curator has emerged as a key mediator between artist, exhibition site and audience. Like art-history, curatorial practice has evolved its own form of narration and a supple vocabulary through the tools of exhibition-making; if art-history focuses on art that has already happened, curating attends to art as it happens. What role do you see biennials as having in India, as opposed to art spaces like galleries and museums? Jitish: Galleries and museums are structured institutions. Biennales offer flexibility and celebrate the inconclusive. If I may describe these

became my points of departure. The 14th to 17th Centuries was a time when the Kerala School of Astronomy and Mathematics was making some transformative propositions for locating human existence within the wider cosmos. It was also the moment when the shores of Kochi were closely linked to the maritime chapter of the ‘Age of Discovery’. The maps changed rapidly in the 1500s with the arrival of navigators at the Malabar coast, seeking spices and riches… And within the revised geography were sharp turns in history; heralding an age of conquest, coercive trading and colonialism, animating the early processes of globalization. A reflection of this navigational history, as well as a shift of one’s gaze deliberating on the mysterious expedition of our planet Earth hurtling through space at over

a dizzying 100000 kilometers per hour, where none of us experience this velocity or comprehend its direction, were two prompts made in my letter to artists. The seemingly unrelated directions of these suggestions were intentional; one was a gaze directed in time, the other in space. I began with a small, core group of artists whose work for me became the nucleus of the project. Thereafter the process of inviting artists has been primarily one of responding to the biology of the project which is a shifting field and every invitation greatly alters this constellation of signs. It entailed six months of incessant travel and dialogue with artists and scholars in various places around the world. The biennale is a snapshot of a journey in a sea of possibilities. 

ith New Year fever still in the air, one place is celebrating not only the start of 2015 but also its own birthday. On Jan. 15, Acacia Luxury Hotel completed its first year of providing excellence in hospitality and food. Apart from the beauty and comfort of the four-star hotel located smack in the middle of the Candolim bustle, Acacia has also been providing an apt setting for indulging in lip-smacking food. Three extremely inviting restaurants now grace the premises, Masala Art, with its delightful Indian fare, E.A.T., a multicuisine, 24-hour diner, and the rooftop Mediterranean grill, Izgara. This season’s opening of Izgara was among the boutique hotel’s most notable events. The restaurant boasts a stunning view of the Arabian Sea – one of the very few places on the Fort Aguada Road to do so, making it a particularly inviting destination to hang out at sunset. The real draw, of course, is the food – a mouth-watering medley of Mediterranean delights. There is a twist to this plot, however. Izgara has now also introduced authentic Thai cuisine, with a live satay counter and other Thai offerings. Once you’ve soaked in the view and been satiated by Izgara’s cuisine, you might consider coming down from the roof and enjoying the ‘Sunken Bar’, where refreshing cocktails and yummy snacks are served in and around the pool. Can a sunny Sunday afternoon get any better? Well, honestly it can, especially if you get yourself kneaded at Spa Acacia. The Spa offers a synergistic blend of therapeutic and rejuvenation treatments based on Asian and Western spa techniques. The treatment rooms come with attached shower and steam facilities. Signature Massages include Bamboo Massage, Spa Acacia Signature Package, Aloe Vera Gel Body Massage and the Almond Cream Massage. If you’d like to come with a pack or are looking to organize a get together, party, meeting or even a wedding, check out the Brown Room, a premium banquet hall with a capacity to accommodate 70-80 people. Located just 500 metres from the sea in an area many people consider to be the most happening in all of Goa, Acacia Luxury Hotel is a game changer on the North Goa beach belt. Happy birthday! 
