The Push To Bring Goan Christians ‘Back” To Hinduism Response: “Thank You, But No Thank You”

By Crespo D’Souza

F

or the uninitiated, let me break down for you the world we currently live in. It’s a world in which a BJP Member of Parliament asks Hindu men to exhume the dead bodies of Muslim women and sexually defile them. Another MP asks all Indians to boycott the “big three” of Indian cinema – Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan – because they’re in relationships Hindu women. It’s a world in which simple possession of beef in neighbouring Maharashtra would get you five years in jail, and where a deeply valuable documentary illuminating societal ills behind rape is banned by the government. In this environment, the latest salvo from the Goan chapter of the VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad or World Hindu Council) inviting local Catholics to “return to the fold” of Hinduism should not come as a surprise. The “Ghar Wapsi,” or homecoming campaign, would facilitate the return of Christians who were forcibly converted during Portuguese rule. “Thousands of Hindus were converted to Christianity by the Portuguese. If they want to come back and contact VHP, we will welcome them with prem (love), respect, mamta (affection) and equality (samata),” said Dada Vedak, a senior functionary with the local VHP. While Vedak was quick to add these “reconversions” will be voluntary, their very mention reflects the generalized atmosphere of growing Hindu intolerance not just in India as a whole, but in Goa as well. Whether the Portuguese had a right to conquer South Asian territories and convert the locals

(they didn’t), is beside the point. That’s because history cannot be relived, and past conquests are part of ground realities throughout the world. Black Americans are mostly Christian, even though their ancestors were brutally separated from the tribal religions of Africa by slave traders. Christian boys in the Ottoman Empire were seized, converted to Islam and enlisted in an elite military unit at the service of the sultan. Millions of people throughout India have ancestors of a different religion because of forced conversions. Here in Goa, it is true the Portuguese engaged in religious persecution, including torture, forced conversion, the destruction of Hindu temples and the prohibition of Hindu rituals. But it’s also true that Goa’s Indo-Portuguese heritage has given it a unique identity that is beloved and appreciated by people all over the world. The Portuguese conquest, lasting 451 years, was often brutal, but it also freed many locals from the tyranny of caste. Bottom line: It is what it is. In a state that loves a good tenderloin steak as much as it does a gathering around a village cross to say the rosary and share a drink into the evening, an announcement like

the VHP’s makes more than a few uncomfortable. “It was my ancestors who were converted. I was born into Christianity. How can this be considered a re-conversion? This is a conversion just as converting a Hindu to any other religion would be,” said Paula de Souza, a working professional. Social anthropologist Jason Keith Fernandes argues that the original conversions to Christianity were often a kind of emancipation. “The story of forced conversions is being raised with annoying frequency. When in fact, the story of the Christianisation is a story of the liberation of oppressed castes from the cruelty of their upper-caste owners,” he said, contending that a large part of the Goan population embraced Christianity and that it was mostly the dominant upper castes who had a problem with it. “If these upper-caste tyrants were forced to flee (in the 16th and 17th centuries) because they refused to brook this new situation of freedom then we need have no sympathy for them at all,” he added. In his book ‘Being a Goan Christian’, Fr Victor Ferrão has pointed out that the “contemporary Christian in Goa is seen as an agent of the Portuguese and made responsible for the deeds of the early modern Portuguese in Asia, as well as the Christian missionaries of the time.” “The rhetoric of the Hindu Right, and that of their Ghar Wapsi project, rests on the suggestion that premodern South Asia was a society of free individuals. The fact is that it was not, it was a land of widespread servitude and slavery. Colonial rule and Christianity came as a welcome relief to many of the people who converted,” Fernandes adds. In his defence of Ghar Wapsi, Vedak pointed out that missionary work – the conversion of others – has long been an integral part of Christianity. “We will not force anyone the way

the Catholic Church has been doing aggressively. If they want to come (into Hinduism) how can we stop them?” Vedak said. Indeed, the “you-are-doing-itso-can-we-too” defence seems to be the biggest rallying cry of those supporting the VHP initiative. They argue that the uproar emerges only when Hindus attempt it and not when it’s done by Christian missionaries, including all the Protestant groups out there enticing “vulnerable” persons into their band of worshipers. Avelino de Sa, an accountant and social activist, argued that what’s important is a person’s character, not the church or temple they attend. “Why fear Ghar Wapsi?” he said. “Is it better to have a few Christians on fire for Jesus than to have lakhs of lukewarm Christians?” “There are many non Christians who are practising Jesus's teachings of love and forgiveness more than many Christians. They have not changed their religion. That is important,” he added in comments that were much appreciated online. It’s important to note that in recent weeks, just before the Panjim by-elections, former Goa Chief Minister and current Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar promised a delegation of Panjim Catholics that the Ghar Wapsi would not be allowed in Goa. Apparently, the local chapter of the World Hindu Council has yet to receive notice of that assurance. 

Holi Recipes: A beverage, a snack, and a dessert from the North By Shubham Gupta If you’re done partying and want to replenish your calories after all the dancing and the water cannon wars, here are some easy recipes for some home-made Holi delights from the north. Well, this is how my Holi used to taste like back in Delhi.

Jal Jeera

Jal Jeera is a refreshing, cumin and mint flavoured lemonade. Preparation time: 20 minutes Serves: 4 Recipe Ingredients: • 1 small bunch Mint leaves • 1 cup Coriander leaves • ½tsp grated Ginger • 2tbsp Lemon juice • 3tsp Cumin seeds - dry roasted and ground fine • ½tsp Black salt • ½tsp Rock salt • ½tsp Salt • 1tsp Dried mango powder(Amchur) • 1tsp Sugar • ¼tsp black pepper • A pinch Asafoetida • 4 cups of Chilled water • Boondi for garnishing

Recipe Method: • Dry roast the asafoetida for a few seconds till it's fragrant. • Grind asafoetida, mint Leaves, ginger and coriander leaves in a blender to a fine paste. • Add 4 cups of chilled water, black salt, rock salt, salt, mango powder, sugar, and cumin powder. • Add lemon juice. Stir the solution well. Pass it through a strainer to filter out the ginger remains. Serve chilled.

Kesar Gujhia

Kesar Gujhia is a dessert consisting of saffron flavoured milk fudge stuffed in fried patties. Preparation time: 30 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes Makes: 20

Recipe Ingredients: • 1 kg Khoya (Milk Fudge) • 500gms powdered Sugar • 500g Refined flour • 6tbsp Clarified butter • 3tbsp Raisins • 2tbsp Chironji • 100ml warm water • Refined Oil for deep frying • 500g Sugar • 2 cup water • 1tbsp slivered pistachios • A pinch of Saffron Recipe Method: • Combine the flour with 6tbsp of melted ghee (clarified butter). Add a tbsp. of warm water to knead smooth dough. Add more water if required. Cover it with a wet cloth and keep it aside. • In a heavy bottom pan, sauté the milk fudge (khoya) at low flame till it’s smooth and lightly fragrant. Add the cardamom powder, raisins, chironji, and powdered sugar. Allow the mixture to cool and divide it into 20 equal parts. • Knead the dough for two minutes again. Divide the dough into 20 like-sized balls. • Roll each ball out into a disc of 4” diameter. Place one part of the stuffing in the middle of the disc and dampen the edges with a little water. Fold the disc to a half circle and press the sides firmly. Poke the sides with a fork to make impressions. • Likewise, complete all the discs. Heat oil and fry two patties at a time on medium flame. Reduce the heat and fry to a golden pink. • Allow to cool. • Prepare sugar syrup of a two string consistency. Flavour it with a pinch of saffron. Soak the gujhia in the syrup for 5-6 minutes. Remove and allow the syrup to cool off and set.

Dahi Wada(Dahi Bhalla):

A popular north Indian dish of lentil dumplings soaked in yoghurt is also a must have on Holi.

Preparation time: 30 minutes + 3 hours soaking time Cooking time: 20 minutes Serves: 4 Recipe Ingredients: • 1 cup husked black gram lentil (urad dal without skin) • 1tsp Salt • ½ tsp baking powder • Oil for deep frying • 2 cups thick fresh yoghurt • 1tsp Sugar Dahi Wada Masala: • 1/2tsp Red chilli powder to taste • 2tbsps cumin seeds • 2tbsp Coriander seeds • ¼tsp black salt • 1tbsps Chat masala

To serve: • 2″ piece of ginger • 2-3 green chilies chopped coriander leaves to garnish • Sweet tamarind chutney

Recipe Method: • Wash and soak the lentils (dal) for 3 hours and grind them to a fine paste adding very little water. It should look like cake batter. • Beat the batter continuously till it’s light and fluffy. Add salt and baking powder and beat well again. To test whether the batter is ready or not, drop a little bit of the batter in a glass of still water. If the batter floats on the top, it is ready. If not, you need to beat it more. • Pre-heat oil in a deep frying pan and place a plastic sheet in your palm. Dampen the plastic sheet and place a spoonfull of batter shaping like a big lemon sized ball. Flatten the top of

the ball with wet fingers and drunk it slowly into the hot oil. Deep fry the balls on medium heat for some time and then on low heat till they're golden brown. • Remove these deep fried wadas into a bowl of water and let them soak for 15-20 minutes. • Remove and gently press between your palms so that excess water oozes out. Keep them aside. Finish making wadas with the rest of the remaining batter and put them in water like you did for the first batch. • Pass the yoghurt through a sieve to ensure that there are no lumps. Add in sugar and a teaspoon of salt and mix well. To make the dahi wada Masala, Dry roast the cumin and coriander seeds till they’re lightly browned and fragrant. Mix all the ingredients and grind them to a smooth powder. • Finely chop the green chillies and coriander leaves. Peal, wash and cut ginger into juliennes. • To serve, place the wadas in a serving bowl and pour the curd mixture evenly all over the wadas, covering them completely. • Chill the wadas for sometime before serving. To serve, sprinkle some Dahi Wada Masala and garnish with coriander leaves, green chillies, ginger juliennes and tamarind chutney.

Saying Good-Bye To Winter, Goa-Style

Holi & Shigmo A Burst of Colour, A Celebration of Life

H

By Goa Streets

oli, India’s breathtaking spring harvest festival, is upon us. The Goan version of it, the Shigmo festival, is a riotous eruption of colour, rich in pomp and pageantry. It’s a festival of the masses, designed to say good-bye to winter. Before we go any further, a piece of advice. Wear old clothes this Friday because if you roam the streets, beaches and by-lanes, you are almost sure to be drenched in coloured water and have the coloured powder gulal hurled at you. It is perfectly acceptable during this time to go up to strangers and douse them with colour. So save your Sunday Best for Sunday!

After Diwali and Ganesh Chaturthi, it’s fair to say that Shigmo, or Shigmotsav, is the biggest Hindu festival in Goa. Lots of folks actually prefer the float parades during Shigmo, which seem less commercial than those on display during Carnival. Rather than floats depicting Coca Cola or Vodafone, expect to see various incidents and deities from Hindu mythology in the parades. Chalk it up to lack of funds, or a sluggish tourism season this year, but the number of Holi/Shigmo parties actually seems to have gone down as compared to last year. Still, lots of resources are spent promoting Shigmo throughout India and abroad, and every year sees a surge in tourism during the 14 days of the festival. Like every other Hindu festival, Shigmo is linked to the heavens. It’s always celebrated on the full-moon day in the month of Phalgun, and Ponda always gets to celebrate the first day of Shigmo. This year the first day is on Saturday, March 7 (Holi is a day earlier). For two full weeks, there will be a separate Shigmo parade in 14 different

cities and towns of Goa, as follows: • March 7 - Ponda • March 8 - Margao • March 9 - Churchorem • March 10 - Valpoi • March 11 - Bicholim & Dharbandora • March 14 - Panjim • March 15 - Mapusa • March 16 - Pernem • March 17 - Quepem • March 18 - Cuncolim • March 19 - Sanguem

We don’t want to bust any Shigmo bubbles, but generally the best parade is the one in Ponda, followed closely by Margao, Mapusa, Pernem and Bicholim. Musicians, performing artistes, actors, craftsmen and others will get a chance to strut their stuff. Of particular note are Bicholim’s ghode modni performers, who dress as horses and enact incidents from past wars.

The floats will feature long rows of dancers performing traditional Goan dances like the romtamel or the fugdi, or enacting mythological incidents. Expect to see huge effigies of demons like Narkasur, along with an assortment of gods and goddesses, other mythological characters, with a healthy smattering of Bollywood film characters thrown in (we said it’s less commercial than Carnival, not that it’s bereft of modern influences!). There is something truly extraordinary about this festival in Goa, with its ancient and modern mixes and its artistic exuberance. The festival comes after six weeks of the sombre Lent season that follows Carnival, ramping up the parties and the fun after a post-Carnival lull in the festivities.. That Carnival and Shigmo share such features as “khells,” or impromptu street plays accompanied by traditional music, is a testament to the seamless amalgamation in Goa of Christian and Hindu rituals. Some say the joy of Shigmo is proof that Goans were experts at having a good time well before European colonialists arrived. The festival commences with ‘Naman’, an obeisance paid to the gods by villagers from the ninth moon day

to the full-moon day. Villagers are required to shun non-vegetarian food and all indulgences like alcohol and other intoxicants for all these days. From the 11th to the 15th moon day, many groups of villagers wear their most colourful dress and set out in a festive mood. They dance in the streets waving multi-coloured flags, cloths and dwajas (column-like red polka dotted festoons). Flute blowing and drum-beating accompany the troupes as they make

their way in a procession to the village temples. There, in the temple courtyards, they dance and sing folk songs, to the beats of drums. On the 5th day of these celebrations is ‘Rang Panchami’, the day of real rejoicing which is practised differently in each village. The most common celebration of ‘Rang Panchami’, however, involves the profuse use of pink-coloured ‘Gulal’, symbolising rejoicing. People throw ‘gulal’ at each

other in full-hearted greetings. Brightly coloured and decorated umbrellas, draped poles all rising in unison to the beat of the festive drums with men and women in elaborate costumes, representing various deities, are the hallmarks of the Goan Shigmo parades. In the end, it’s not just about commemorating the spring harvest. It’s also a celebration of life. 

S

ituated within an elegant and comforting cocoon in Calangute, Goa, is Modern European fusion restaurant, A Reverie. In the effort to invoke the history, landscape and soul of culinary evolution from around the globe, Aakritee and Virendra Sinh, the team behind the restaurant has conjured a New Menu to celebrate their philosophy of creating ‘Food for Thought’. The restaurant’s signature cuisine revolves around the continuous pursuit of improvisation of every aspect of food. Taking inspiration from the ordinary, the creators revisit, reinterpret and reinvent the dishes to infuse their own personalities in them – an organic progression of exploration and creativity on the plate, while remaining uncompromising on the flavour and taste. The result of which is the familiar

presented in an unfamiliar way, and the unfamiliar presented to look and taste like something familiar. A great example is A Reverie’s take on beetroots and goat’s cheese, called ‘Nothing Beats Beets Goat Cheese’. Deconstructing the classic combination, this rendition serves beetroot threeways topped with a fried goat’s cheese patty, establishing the fact that even the most beloved tastes can come alive with imagination and clever technique. The desi chicken lollypop is also made more interesting with the reinterpreted ‘’Zen’ Garden “Lollypop”’. Compressed chicken wings coated in a Japanese-inspired Teriyaki glaze and served on lollypop sticks on a bonsai tree will raise a sense

ombat Cage Fight Night, India’s first and only entertainment-fight experience, goes international Following the massive success of the first Fight Night on January 18, 2015, Combat Cage Fight is putting the gloves back on to bring you another exhilarating event. This time, organisers have taken it to the global stage, bringing in fighters from around the world. The second edition of Combat Cage Fight Night will take place on Sunday, March 15, 2015 at Tito’s Courtyard in Baga. Weigh-ins will be held at Café Mambo on Saturday, March 14, 2015. Drawn from across India and around the world, 12 fighters will go head-to-head in a six-bout contest that will challenge them physically and mentally to take the top prize. The main event will be an international female fight representing India and the UK. Combat cage fighting is a regulated, safe, competitive sport that involves a combination of martial arts techniques within the restrictions of a confined space. The only event of its kind in India intertwines a show of the complexity of technical self-defence skills with the pulsating vibe of a nightclub experience. The second edition of Combat Cage Fight Night is sponsored by hospitality group Varanda do Mar, in association with nightclubs Tito's and Café Mambo, fitness group Norbert's Fitness Studio, beverage brands XXX Tequila and Kingfisher, healthcare group Manipal Hospitals, lifestyle magazine Viva Goa, digital media company Spangle, photography equipment firm GoPro and Goa Tourism. This time, an Italian bout will kick off the night as

of child-like glee in the guests’ minds. The ‘Bath Tub!’ ice-cream sundae pays homage to the cherished banoffee pie to thaw even the staunchest of classicists. A condensed milk and a banana icecream with cookie crumbs and chocolate popcorn served in a terracotta ‘bath tub’ is yet another specimen of A Reverie’s gastronomic alchemy. Reflecting upon the new menu, Aakritee Sinh, Chef and Co-owner says, “Eating at A Reverie is an experience sprinkled with history, aromas, textures, flavours and most importantly, memories. With every dish, we create subtle expressions of surprise with our Edible Art Installations to titillate the palate and the memory rather than confuse the

brothers Guillaume Stolfi and Ivan Stolfi go head-tohead in the middleweight category. Their bout will be followed by a fight between Delhi’sAmit Rajput and DanyMappalafrom Kerala (welterweight category). In the bantamweight category, Goa’s PushkarBhosle meets Maharashtra’s Mahesh Jadav head on, followed by Sachin Panwar from Haryana who will go up against PankajKhanna from Delhi in the same weight category. The co-main event will be an international men’s bout between AlfanMansoorifrom India and Ivan Pochtinfrom Russia in the featherweight category. The grand finale is a female bantamweight bout between Bony Oortmerssen from the UK and Monika Malik from India. The event will also see some of the best DJs from Goa, India and around the world, including renowned UK duo Burrito Boys, spin unforgettable sets in the high-voltage ambience of Goa’s most famous party destination. A surprise entertainment event that is set to steal your breath is also slated to be part of the show. With water-tight security and medical arrangements – including bouncers, strict vigilance, paramedics, an on-site doctor and ambulance, Combat Cage Fight Night is the best organised selfdefence entertainment event in the country. It is part of a series of similar events being throughout the season. At the weigh-ins for the various weight categories on Saturday, March 14, at Café Mambo, guests will get a chance to pick their favourite fighter for the contest. Tickets are being sold on the Tito’s website and at all Tito’s venues and supermarkets. So mark your calendars. Are you up for the fight?!

mind. The most crucial elements, however, are fresh ingredients and clean flavours augmented by technique and clever innovation.” The décor of the restaurant also plays an additional role in heightening the gustatory experience. With large pillars supporting a majestic tiled roof and the raised panoramic lounge forming an ‘inverted amphitheater’ – the restaurant’s

façade and intricate details intensify the theatrical culinary performance that is worthy of commendation. With an element of fun in creating memorable experiences, A Reverie demystifies dining and celebrates the simple art of eating food! 

My Journey

By Dr. Nandita Desai

A large, exuberant crowd descended on the Goa Streets headquarters on Chogm Road in Sangolda on Tuesday, March 3, for the launch party of Galleria By Streets, a new venture kicking off with a monthlong exhibition called “Beyond the Canvas”. The show features an exquisite collection of paintings, sculpture, jewelry and clothing by the acclaimed Mumbai-based artist Dr. Nandita Desai. The launch party featured tunes by the soulful Joanne Fernandes, yummy food & drink and delightful art displayed in the 100-year-old Indo-Portuguese house that doubles as the office of Goa Streets, the News & Entertainment Weekly. So what if we’re biased? The evening was magical! Nandita’s beautiful works are available at a 20 percent discount during the first week of the exhibition. Below, Nandita explains the journey that brought her Beyond The Canvas.

M

y life has been all about constant movement and relocation to new homes. In fact not a new home but several old ones! Heritage homes, seeped in history, nestled in forgotten cities – we travelled everywhere where my Dad’s bureaucratic job took him. Nine schools and subsequent residences later, the love for all things vintage seeped into my bones! My idea of travel, too, is to seek out the Antique and the

Vintage quarters of the city (Old London, Bombay’s Chor Bazaar and Oshiwara, Kochi’s Jew Town and the bylanes of Old Delhi and Pondicherry). During these travails I source antiques, paintings and objects which I love. They travel with me to be restored, re-touched, re-painted and re–born! From Antique pendants (more than 100 years old) to Vintage (more than 70 years old) paintings, from tables, chairs, lamps, carved wood, old wood and trees – they all feel my loving care. The juxtaposition of the old and the new fascinates me. So using the Vintage\ Antique items as my core inspiration,

I build my art work around them. So my table gets painted with the background of an old haveli with ladies lounging around the house. My antique trunks get images painted on them, the lamps retained their bent quirkiness but are cleaned and scrubbed till squeaky clean and then they get painted! From the oft visited charming old markets, I find beads, old photos, brooches and chains that find their way into my hand-crafted, handpainted natural and organic jewelry. I pair my jewelry with my minimalistic cotton/silk lounge wear – which I paint to match the neck pieces! Having lived in old stately houses (the one in Kolhapur was called ‘The Old Palace‘!) with dignified portraits adorning their walls, I was inspired to create my ‘King’ painting and those of royal ladies and their entourage! Everything in this collection has a touch of forgotten times, of history – all in a modern avatar! To soften the impact of the Vintage and Antique wood, I have displayed my works with paintings of nature – flowers, birds, landscapes… to make the antique come alive in a modern garden setting! On one of my walking journeys in Khandala I came across a 150-years-old tree which I shaped into a series called ‘The Journey‘. The wood used in this series, and the way it has been treated, painted and sculpted, represents a journey that Buddha could have undertaken. From the Buddha TURN TO PAGE 18
