Boney Alex Dias A Soulful Guitarist By Andres Fernandes Boney Alex Dias is a living example of how music runs through the Goan spirit Boney Alex Dias does not come from a particularly musical family, but that hasn’t stopped him from earning a reputation as one of the most passionate guitarists in Goa. This 31-year-old resident of Santa Cruz won the ‘best guitarist’ award at the annual Battle of the Bands a few years back and two years ago released his first album, Tuzo Uggdas (Remembering You), a Konkani compilation that was “a tribute to my dad and

all the lovely people of Goa.” Alex, as people call him, has been in a number of bands and has performed at quite a few venues and concerts, in addition to being a very sought-after guitar teacher. Aside from playing both the guitar and the flute, he’s an accomplished cricket and badminton player. At various times, he can be both shy and talkative, introverted and bold. Here are excerpts from my interview with this splendid Goan musician who, despite his initials, ain’t bad at all! AF: When and why did you start playing the Guitar? BAD: I started playing the guitar at the age of 13. The reason behind me starting to play was a nice teacher called Agnelo Dias who was sent by God and who literally pulled me out of my house and taught me the guitar! AF: What were the first tunes you learned? BAD: ‘God’s love‘ and the hymns we sing in church. AF: Which famous musicians do you admire? Why? BAD: It’s a big list. From Goa I admire Remo Fernandes for the contributions he has made in the music field and for taking Goa to the rest of the world through his innovative singing style and compositions. Among others my

From page 3 favorites are Johan Sebastian Bach, Ravi Shankar, Vishwa Mohan Bhat, Steve Morse, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson, to name a few. AF: Which are your favorite groups? BAD: Groups I like are Deep purple, Scorpions, Beatles, Eagles, Dream Theatre, Animals as Leaders and many more.

AF: Tell me about your competitions and prizes. BAD: I have got the ‘best guitarist’ award at the annual ‘Battle of the Bands’ rock competition among the top 15 bands held in august 2007 at Alva-Mar, Parra, Goa. I have won the acoustic guitar competition, organized by the ‘Café Coffee Day’ at Miramar, Panjim-Goa in September 2008. I have also been awarded the exhibition award by the Trinity College of Music- London for securing the highest marks (94%) in India at the grade 5 classical guitar examination. For the contributions made in music locally I had been felicitated by the ‘Youth of Santa Cruz ‘ on 19th Dec 2011. AF: Do you perform publicly? BAD: Yes I often get invited to give guitar recitals for music students and others. I like doing it as it feels nice to give a good performance and inspire the younger musicians of Goa, who are the future. I also play in the church choir, have done lots of concerts and occasions as I have been part of many bands, including the gospel band KIGS, Band Hidden Track, Band India, to name a few, and a

few rock bands, namely Bad Apple and Prolife. Where for radio and television I had been interviewed on Radio Mirchi, HCN and Goa 365, with live guitar performances. Presently am doing fusion music collaboration with S. Harikumar, a carnatic violin player from Kerala. AF: Do you teach music? BAD: Yes I teach guitar privately at

home and I feel proud to say that some of my students are doing very well. AF: What are your favourite genres of music? BAD: Rock, classical, Indian classical, Carnatic music.

AF: If you had to give up music – what would you do to be creative? BAD: I would have loved to do fine arts as I was good at drawing in school. I would also have loved to be a cricketer.

AF: Strangest venue or gig you’ve ever played? BAD: To mention a strange venue I remember some time back we played on a makeshift stage at a private party where I had mangoes hanging beside me! The drummer was almost in the bushes and the keyboard player was in the roots of the mango tree.

AF: What advice would you give to beginners? BAD: Dear friends we are not a gift to music! Music is a gift to us from the Almighty. Learn it and master it and in this way show your love for music.

AF: Do you have any other projects in mind? Like an album release or some concert or something? BAD: I already released my first album in the year 2011. I chose it to be in Konkani as a tribute to my dad and all the lovely people of Goa and the album is called ‘TUZO UGGDAS’ and it is in stores. I have just arranged music for a Hindi album which will hit the stores soon and am also looking forward to arranging music for an English album of one of the most promising singers of Goa! I’m also looking forward to working on something in the Carnatic music area.

the venture’s chief mentor, is an award-winning journalist who has reported from some two dozen countries in the Middle East, Asia, Africa and the Americas. An international newsman for 25 years, Steven served as Bureau Chief with the Associated Press, the world’s largest news gathering organization, in Israel and Venezuela, as well as AP’s Chief of Southeast Asia Services in Singapore and Indonesia, and Senior Editor in the US. Steven covered the rise and fall of the Medellin and Cali cocaine cartels, rode into Kabul with a triumphant Northern Alliance and directed coverage of wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Gaza and Lebanon. The Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar was caught because he lingered on the phone with his son to answer Steven’s questions, and the cops traced the call. Steven covered the killing of Daniel Pearl in Pakistan, hurricanes in Puerto Rico and Mexico, the death of Yasser Arafat, a coup in Fiji and the rise to power of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. Steven has also worked for the New York Times, the Washington Post, Newsweek and CBS Radio.

She took a break from work to raise her two boys in Indonesia, Israel and the United States. She has a Masters Degree in Marketing from The University of Strathclyde in the UK and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Relations. She was born in Assam, India and spent her early years on a tea plantation overlooking a pristine wildlife sanctuary. When she was 10, she and her family moved to Calcutta, where Marisha had the privilege of working alongside Mother Teresa. Later the family moved to Goa. Marisha and Steven were married 11 years ago on the Candolim beach.

Ananda Krishna,

Photographer, turned hopefully towards the camera early in life. With an abundance of knowledge and overwhelmed by his brilliant teachers in Light and Life Academy, Ooty, Ananda (last ‘a’ is silent) set out knowing the ‘how’s’ but not the ‘why’s’ of a photograph. It took a good amount of drifting on the road and dabbling with shooting advertisements, a film, weddings, events, exhibitions, copywriting and even selling booze to finally understand where the WHY really matters for him – photojournalism.

Sneha Rodrigues

Business Development Manager. Sneha has a background in hospitality and online marketing, having worked for Club Mahindra as Marketing Manager and C2C, a medical tourism company in Kuwait, as Business Development Manager. She’s a foodie with a blog on poetry, and her best kept secret is that she has a fabulous singing voice that she puts to good use around Goa.

Nilesh Shetgaonkar,

Administrative Assistant, is a happy-go-lucky Morjim native who prides himself on living life to the fullest. He spent seven years in Dubai and loves football, cricket and trivia.

Radhika Naik

Editorial Assistant. A Mapusa resident, Radhika enjoys siestas and, when awake, spending time with family. She was always a big fan of the news and is thrilled to be part of that world today. Music with a slow tempo is her favourite playlist.

Vijay Gadekar

Distribution Team. Aside from being very handy in all things mechanical, Vijay is a big fan of football with an equal passion for quality beach time.

What is shack life? It’s a uniquely Goan phenomenon that has a lot to do with the sussegado way of being – carefree, laid-back and happy to soak in the sun. Goa would not be Goa without its beach shacks, an essential part of the state’s identity. Our cover story touches on the good, the bad and everything in between related to the beach shack culture in Goa. We hope you enjoy it! As our story on Pope Francis states, by now it’s clear we have just about the coolest pontiff in history, so we decided to write a piece on 10 extraordinary gestures by this humble leader. We think it makes for pretty interesting reading. We hope you do, too. This edition of Goa Streets was prepared in the aftermath of the terrible tragedy at Canacona in South Goa, where a building under construction collapsed and killed (as of this writing) 24 people. Jose Lourenco, a writer and engineer (and former editor of Goa Streets!), takes us through the lessons learned from the Canacona collapse, with an essay that contains real wisdom and solid advice. These pages contain interviews with two rather extraordinary people, the guitarist Boney Alex Dias who has made a splash on the local music scene, and the Portuguese documentary film maker Francisco Veres Machado, who has long had his sights on Goa. We’d also like to draw your attention to our piece exploring the internet habits of today’s young people in Goa, and our story on the garbage wars of Saligao, where residents are up in arms about a proposed new treatment plant in their midst. Also, don’t miss our piece covering the book launch of ‘Karma Kurry for the Mind, Body, Heart & Soul' our story revealing some lesser known recipes from the tradition of vegetarian Hindu cooking in Goa and, last but certainly not least, our piece on Shanti Morada, a stunning new boutique hotel in Saligao. Sure, our little state is not without its share of problems. But this is a beautiful time of the year here, and there is promise in the air. Sending warm wishes to all our readers! r Shah couldn’t believe that Goan food could be made without something that has a tail, without onions or garlic. Like the Jain cuisine, Goans too have recipes that are sattvic or fit to be served to the Gods. For some reason, a number of Hindu Gods don’t like nonvegetarian food and for some other inexplicable reason, bulbs that grow underground aren’t considered ‘pure’ because they have ‘life’ in them. But so do sprouts which are relished. In an already complicated social set up, we have subcomplications when it comes to caste, dialects and food. In Goa, Christians add salt to the rice when it’s cooking; Hindus don’t. The former use vinegar to add sourness and tang to a gravy, Hindus prefer tamarind pulp or kokum. Unless you’re going for a Saraswat food festival or someone’s home, you are unlikely to find the following recipes/dishes on any menu. First, a raw mango ud-da-methi. Peel a medium sized raw mango, remove the seed, chop into little squares, sprinkle salt over them and keep aside. Finely grind 2 cups grated coconut, 2 tsps chilli powder, ½ tsp turmeric powder, a tbsp. of tamarind paste and 12 peppercorns. Heat a tbsp. of (preferably coconut) oil till it smokes. Then add a tsp each of mustard seeds, urad dal (split black gram without the skin) and fenugreek (methi) seeds. When the dal turns brown, add a pinch of heeng (asafoetida) and immediately pour into it the ground masala, salt and jaggery to taste, three cups of water and the mango bits. Boil for 3-4 minutes and serve hot with rice. Next, a stew called khatkhatem. Chop into 1-2” pieces and keep ready a cupful of each: red pumpkin, raw papaya, banana, drumstick, raw jackfruit and white radish/turnip, yam (suran, colocasia root). If you have an ingredient or two less, don’t panic, either do without it or replace with something similar. But no cauliflowers, peas, broccoli or carrots. Or cabbages, spinach and the likes. Cook and mash ¼ cup of toor dal.

Add to the dal 4 cups of water. First add and cook the hard vegetables: jackfruit, yam and radish. Then add the other vegetables. Cook them with salt until they are soft but retaining their shape. Whilst they’re cooking, grind together finely 2 and ½ cups grated coconut, a tsp of turmeric, 1 tbsp of chilli powder and some tamarind paste. Lastly, add to this masala 4-5 lightly crushed teffla (this strong smelling spice is commonly used on the west coast and is easily available with hawkers who squat outside markets and in villages). Add a dash of jaggery for sweetness, give it a good boil and stir and serve immediately. This dish is not dry. It goes well with rice/bread/ chapatti. The third vegetarian dish with no onions and no garlic is a simple one, made with the lowly but tasty and nutritious and easily available red pumpkin. Goa doesn’t celebrate Halloween. The inexpensive pumpkin is unjustly looked down upon. Try this recipe and you’ll see why: take a slice (approx. 300 gms) of bright orange pumpkin, remove its seeds (you can dry them and use elsewhere) and its skin. Cut the flesh into ½” bits, put it in a vessel with a fistful of freshly grated coconut, a tbsp. of finely ground ginger, ½ tsp of crushed jeera (cumin seeds), salt and green chillies to taste and cook it until tender with very little water. Garnish with finely chopped fresh coriander leaves. If you want to convert this into a raita or yoghurt-based salad, beat up a cupful of curd, cool the pumpkin and mix it all up. Whoever said Goans can’t, don’t, won’t eat anything that’s plucked hasn’t met my grandmother. Ok, she’s been gone a long time, but my mother and now my cousins and I enjoy our ‘pure’ vegetarian food as much as we relish the fried fish, pork chops and beef steaks (blasphemy that I should even mention this, but truth must prevail) that are often served in our platters. So hark ye who believe that the world and humankind will be saved by everyone turning to healthy, vegetarian, vegan, organic food, turn to Goan cuisine, you won’t miss flesh again. 

What makes them click? By Crespo D’Souza

L

et’s face it. Here in Goa we’re part of the newly connected world. We haven’t had as many years of experience on the internet as other places on the planet. And yet young people in Goa are flocking to the net in droves, and it’s now a central part of so many of our lives. As far as I know, there’s never been a comprehensive study on what Goa’s young people are doing online. So when I was asked to write this story on Goa’s Generation Y and the internet, I had to rely on anecdotal evidence and the impressions I have from the people I know. I’m a 28-year-old guy with lots of friends online, and my conclusion is this: young Goans love the internet for online games, social networking, peerto-peer messaging, watching movies and following pop stars on YouTube. And then, of course, there’s porn. I’ll get to that later. While it’s true that in relative terms we’re internet newbies, India’s 2011 census showed that Goa has the highest percentage of Internet users in all of India, a country where overall Internet penetration is now growing by around 30 percent a year, according to global digital analyst comScore. An estimated 15 to 20 percent of Goans now have access to the Internet, compared to the national average of around 12 percent. Overall, India, with 165 million people on the Net, is number 3 in the world in terms of total number of Internet users, behind only China and the U.S. Yet it ranks near the bottom of the list globally, at 164, when it comes to the percentage of the population online.

But with growth of Internet penetration at its current levels both in Goa and India at large, that ranking is certain to change very quickly. And at the centre of this boom are Goa’s young. For Paula D’Silva, it’s the phenomenon called ‘Farmville’. No sooner does she get home from her job where she has newly joined, and like a dart she races to the computer to the farm management simulation game located on Facebook. However, the love for the game comes at a price - indignation from other family members. Her mother thinks she should “engage herself in much more useful activity” and her brothers want to use the computer themselves. But she’s addicted. “I don’t know, I just love playing the game. There’s always something different to do… something new to look forward to,” Paula said. It’s no surprise that the more ‘intelligent’ games have fewer takers than the action or the plain banal ones. The novelty of playing against a random

person online who is also using a screen name and whom you have never met appears to be quite fascinating to the young Goan mind. Farmville, which Time magazine described as “a series of mindless chores on a digital farm”, has certainly gripped a good number of young minds like that of Paula and many others among the 18-24 age group, the sector most enamoured of online gaming. Another popular internet space among Goa’s young is that of being a fan. Call it another level of social networking or another level of wasting time. A lot of this takes place in a Facebook niche called Pages, where various brands and celebrities interact with their fans. It isn’t uncommon to find people from 18 right up to their mid-40s raving about their favourite football club, pop singer or film, meeting others of similar minds (or dissimilar minds) online. “Here is where the internet and social media in particular is making a difference. They are giving the young people a platform to express themselves, even if it is just to their friends. This on one side may be making us all a bit loud mouthed, but more importantly is changing the way people think, changing who they are,” Jonathan Fernandes, a young man who’s studying for his PhD in math. As in much of the country, in Goa there’s quite a bit of illegal downloading of games, programmes, movies, songs, videos and other content.

A typical young Goan might say they’re against piracy, but then have no problem grabbing stuff for free. A trend picking up among young women, inspired by popular cooking shows like Master Chef Australia, is that of collecting exotic recipes on the internet and then making the dishes at home. “My husband calls me internet cook. But how does that matter as long as the food I cook is edible and all like it,” said Astrida Alphonso, 27, a newly wed woman. No profile of today’s youth on the internet can be complete without the mention of pornography. That’s because so many watch it online (like everywhere else in the world!). What this means for human relationships, social traditions and individuals’ psychological well being would be a topic for another article. Suffice to say lots of folks in Goa watch porn online. You know it. I know it. There’s a popular saying: “The internet is what you want it to be.” It’s clear to me we’re better off with the web at our fingertips, if only because it’s so much harder to pull the wool over our eyes with Google just a click away. 

TO BEACH OR NOT TO BEACHTHAT’S NEVER A QUESTION Unravelling the Lure of Goan Shacks Bina Datwani

B

efore you flip the page (or worse, navigate away from this web page!) thinking that this is going to be an article doling out a list of the predictably popular beach shacks in Goa, take another bite of your warm buttered poi and read on. This is a story not just about beach shacks but a way of life – a uniquely Goan phenomenon that, as much as anything else about our lovely state, defines us in the eyes of the world. Wikipedia defines a shack as a type of small and often primitive shelter. In Goa a shack is a restaurant, a night club, a performance venue, a sleep lounge, a viewpoint, a bar and a laidback hangout all rolled into one. It’s also the state’s tourism lifeline and an inseparable part of its identity, much like the dhabas in Punjab, jazz in New Orleans or pubs in London. Last Sunday, as some friends and I were debating on a mutually acceptable venue to satiate our hunger pangs, I felt a craving for a beach shack afternoon and reckoned it was the ideal frame of mind to speak to other shack addicts about their symptoms. So, we plonked ourselves into the comfy cane chairs at Pete’s, located on the northern end of Candolim beach. Evolving from a restaurant run out of home, this shack is a favourite with both locals and visitors, to the point where an American man I

Tourists sunbathing at Candolim beach

interviewed, begged me to give it a bad review because he didn’t want it to get too crowded! Before I continue, let me tell you where word has it are some of the hottest shacks this season (and I’m not talking about the weather). In the Candolim/ Calangute area, you can never go wrong with Calamari, Spotty and the Boat Shack. In Anjuna, Curlie’s is the place, with food and ambience a cut above the rest (even though these guys seem to have a propensity for getting in trouble with the law). In Baga, go for Café del Mar, Zanzibar and Good Luck. In the South, Café del Mar also has an outlet in Palolem, and Kingstok in Colva is highly appealing. At Pete’s, soothing music was playing at a normal decibel as opposed to the high voltage beats that accost our senses at other venues, and waiters were friendly and efficient. It also has clean toilets (with extra points for toilet

A beautifuly lit shack

paper). The icing on the cake is the menu; tasty fare with a varied cuisine. A Spanish family sitting behind us were raving about the seafood, specifically the calamari and I reckon that could be compared to the Japanese waxing eloquently about sushi. Dennis is an Englishman who’s been coming to Goa for several years and stays six months at a stretch in Pete’s guesthouse. He takes it upon himself to decorate the shack for Christmas every year “because it makes everyone happy”and he gave me his word that he’ll hold off on taking the tree down if I promise to return to the shack next weekend. Truly, there’s something for everyone when spending a day at the beach in Goa. It’s a rare thing to be able to sit so close to the water under a charming shade and

feast on a steady supply of food and drink, with eager staff at your beck and call. This kind of decadence is not often seen in other parts of the world. Interestingly, it is the restrictions in Goa that originally gave rise to the beach shacks. No permanent structures are allowed within 100 metres of the high-tide line, but the government allows a designated number of temporary structures (the shacks) within that perimeter. It’s an automatic stress buster where gentle waves sound like a lullaby and the cool sea breeze is a respite from the heat. The shacks

usually offer sun lounges where one can read, people watch or simply contemplate the meaning of life. A party of four from the UK, who were in the late sixties age bracket, admitted that they had conducted an experiment regarding the firmness of the sun beds “else you’re going to end up with a nasty backache”. Good point; they hit jackpot at Appis in Candolim years ago and have never strayed since. But they also candidly stated that minus the shacks, Goa would be taken off their holiday list. Of course it’s not only tourists who avail of the shacks. Here’s what one local resident had to say about spending the day at a shack: “It makes us feel like we’re on holiday without the expense and trouble of travelling elsewhere!” On the flip side, the great Goan singer Remo Fernandes dislikes going to the beach these days, “because of the commercial chaos - blaring music, large crowds and parking woes. It’s construction without control”. And this brings us to the downside of the beach shack phenomenon in Goa. Indeed, in many places the infrastructure to support the estimated 700 shacks on private property and 347 shacks issued by the Tourism Department on public land simply does not exist. With the exception of the Calangute/Candolim stretch, where the Tourism

within the high-tide line, resulting in massive flooding). Every year, a lottery is held to determine who gets licenses for the shacks on public land (this latest lottery gave three-year licenses), and the outcome of winners and losers inevitably entails heartbreak. One owner, who asked to remain anonymous, complained about how he had to ‘buy’ his license from another operator to stay open this season and this, after being in business since the early ‘90s. “Some of the lucky ones got a 3-year license so they can plan ahead and renovate their spot”. Sprucing up has been in the form of elevating the shack onto a platform so as to lay hard flooring, though I think that’s a pity because what’s the point of dining at a shack if you can’t curl your toes into the sand whilst munching on rawa fried mussels and chugging back a few beers. One of the other disappointments is the banishment of the masseurs due to the fact that some of them operated prostitution rings. A real pity, for the closest I’ve come to nirvana is while lying on the sand getting a foot massage. Before I bid farewell, here are a few more shacks you might want to make a beeline for this season. Check out Dunes in Mandrem, which has scrumptious prawn curry and a store selling beach apparel. While you’re in the area, try Paradise Shack in Ashwem which serves up food that’s better than most. Zeebop in Salcette that has a pristine and quiet beach, and Flying Dolphin in Calangute is a perennial favourite. I’m not sure either technically qualifies as a shack, but La Plage and Sublime in Ashvem are more upmarket both in terms of décor and price but are definitely worth a visit. Dominck in Benaulim has been a favourite for decades. All this talk of wining and dining with the sun, sand and sea as a soothing backdrop is causing goose bumps so, I’ve decided to pack my swimsuit and Frisbee and head on down to the nearest water body. I’ll see you there.  binaad@yahoo.com

Department has now arranged for the local village panchayats to collect garbage, garbage removal is an enormous problem. As is sewage. Last year at Arambol, tourists witnessed raw sewage bubbling up from the sand after a group of shacks decided to pipe their waste into a common area beneath the sand rather than install septic tanks, as required by law (very few shacks obey this law). The shacks are a constant source of tension between environmentalists who see the coastline as an ecosensitive zone and the many thousands of Goans who make their living from the shacks. The tension is particularly acute in the Morjim area, a renowned turtle nesting site, and though the number of shacks there has been curtailed in recent years, shack life remains robust (despite a mistaken beach survey that recently placed a number of Morjim shacks

10 Extraordinary Gestures by Pope Francis

I

By Dr. Charlane Pereira E Rebello

t is possible to be the world’s most powerful religious leader, AND its most humble? By now it’s clear the Roman Catholic Church has elected just about the coolest pope in its entire history. It’s not so much about what Pope Francis says as about what he DOES. Here are 10 extraordinary gestures by Francis during his first 10 months as pope.

1. Bowing and asking the crowd’s blessing on election night When popes are elected, they bless the crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square. But on 13th March 2013, the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, now Pope Francis, asked the crowd to bless him.

2. Giving up papal regalia such as red shoes and the gold pectoral cross Pope Francis has refused to wear ermine-lined capes, red papal shoes and the gold pectoral cross donned by his predecessors, choosing regular black shoes and a pectoral cross made of inexpensive metals. 3. Shunning the palace Pope Francis has refused to live in the Apostolic Palace that housed other popes, choosing instead to live in the Vatican guest house and dine in the cafeteria with everyone else.

4. Calling regular people on the telephone What would you do if you received a phone call and you heard this, “Hello, this is the pope calling from Rome”? Many people around the world, including simple, regular folks like you and me, have received just that call and, guess what? It really was Pope Francis on the other end of the line. He prefers hand-written notes and personal phone calls over having his secretary send out formal notices on his behalf. 5. Washing the feet of 12 prisoners, including a Muslim woman Pope Francis washed the feet of 12 young prisoners in a penitentiary in Rome on Holy Thursday. Catholic liturgy states that on Holy Thursday the pope should wash the feet of only men. Among those whose feet were washed by Francis on this day was a Muslim woman. Some conservatives didn’t like this. I did.

6. Lovingly holding the disfigured face of a man in his hands Vinicio Riva, a 53-year-old Italian man, suffers from neurofibromatosis, a rare genetic disease. Pope Francis held the man’s face, disfigured with huge boils, in his hands – sweeping away any thought of ugliness with a scene of profound beauty.

7. Letting the children come to him At the Vatican’s Year of Faith celebration last October, a young boy walked up onstage to the Pope and decided to hug his leg, much to the chagrin of Cardinals and other aids who tried to shoo him away. The pope, of course, was annoyed not one iota, and let the little boy sit in his chair while he resumed his speech. Last month another little boy pulled off the pope’s skull cap and started playing with it, and Francis just smiled. 8. Riding around in buses and old cars Pope Francis shuns the bullet-proof Mercedes limousines used by his predecessors, and instead drives himself around the Vatican in a used 1984 Renault with 300,000 km (186,000 miles) on it, gifted to the Pope after he urged people not to drive in expensive cars, but save the money and donate it to the poor. Right after he was elected as leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics, he took a bus from the Sistine Chapel to the Vatican along with the other Cardinals.

9. Giving Christmas gifts to the poor Pope Francis gave 2000 prepaid telephone cards and 4000 Metro day tickets to poor immigrants at Dono di Maria, a shelter in Rome run by the Missionaries of Charity on 14th December 2013. Each gift came with a Christmas card signed by the pope.

10. Changing old priorities He has instructed the Church hierarchy to speak less about same-sex marriage, contraception and abortion, which were previously high priorities. Pope Francis wants the focus instead to be on building a more compassionate world – not unlike a certain figure in history upon whose existence the Church is founded. 

This is the place Shanti Boutique Hotels is coming from as owners Rajat and Sanjana Verma open their next venture, Shanti Morada (www.shantimorada.com). The Goa Streets team has had the privilege of visiting both properties, including a multiday stay at Shanti Home. We can confirm that all these accolades – including the recent awarding by NDTV and Brands Academy of Shanti Morada as Best Boutique Resort in Goa (despite having just opened) – are very well deserved. Shanti Morada is a boutique concept hotel with a unique personality, showcasing Indian art, tradition and culture. It’s tucked away in Saligao, a picturesque village known for its culturally enriched society and the only Gothic-style church in Goa.

“Casa de Morada” (Home of Happiness), built well over a century ago in 1897, has been painstakingly restored over the last 8 years. The quiet location along with its antique Indian décor, gives the hotel an attractive and personalized touch. During the site excavation, the old foundation cross of the original 1897 house was found, and this has been restored to its original location within the compound wall. A wrought iron

Bonding with Goa through films An interview with Portuguese filmmaker Francisco Veres Machado By Goa Streets GS: What was your reason for coming to Goa? Francisco: I came to Goa in the year 2006 to do field work for my PhD. My aim was to film Portugal’s former colonies and how they develop to gain their own identity and national consciousness. My supervisor asked me if I was a millionaire. After all, you need money to travel all over to these colonies. When he found out that I was not a millionaire (laughs), he told me to concentrate on just one colony. And that was Goa. GS: Pursuing your Phd was your mother’s dream. Can you comment? Francisco: My mother always wanted me to finish my degree. Back then I really didn’t think of it seriously. But after she passed away I thought and decided to use the economies

that she left me to fulfil her dream …She was extremely devoted to St Francis Xavier, after whom she named me. He is also my godfather. Again when I came to Goa for my field work, I was completely ignorant of Goan history. I had no idea that St Francis relics were here. When as a tourist I visited the Basilica in Old Goa, I had no doubts that my mother’s little finger was still showing me the way (smiles). GS: Why did you decide to do more documentaries on Goa? Francisco: It was a coincidence. I witnessed this huge Save Goa Movement that was taking place in 2006. I was present at one such demonstration in December. I was probably the only foreign journalist filming it. Here, I got talking to some interesting people who were surprised to know how much I knew of Goa and its culture. After coming to Goa, I was putting my hands in all books I could get about its politics, religion and social rituals, folk … actually I was surprised with the passion Goans had for their homeland. And so although my main idea was to stay in Goa only for nine months to shoot for my PhD, I ended up spending a couple of years here. I was invited to do a TV series on Goa for a Portuguese channel. I did this for two years.

GS: After that you went to Portugal, only to return to Goa… Francisco: (Smiles) After those two years, I returned to Portugal. Reaching there, I quickly got an assignment for a new film. Guess what was the assignment? Three documentaries on Goa’s Liberation! This took up another two years for which I had to shoot in Goa and Portugal. The first episode was screened on December 19, 2012 on Portugal TV. When I thought Goa was part of my past, only then I understood how wrong I was. Goa had become a kind of curse (laughing loudly). A week before the screening of this series, I got a call from Panjim to produce another film on Goa. Of course I said yes. This documentary is currently in post-production. GS: What do you like about Goa? Francisco: In the West, everything is pasteurized like the milk but here everything is alive. There is a relationship with nature. Goa is a place from where I have unforgettable memories. My daughter was conceived in Goa… We had a working title for her name which was India (laughs) …I like Goa, because here people are not castrated by rules and regulations … when you become a ‘civilized’ person, which many think is a good thing you forget what freedom is. GS: Your constant work takes you around the world … How do you balance your family life? Francisco: I can only have a family that is as gypsy as I am… GS: You feel homesick in Goa? Francisco: I have made many nice friends in Goa. So I am not really homesick. However, there are two things that I miss in Goa. One is a colourful social life. Here I notice that people meet in churches, cemeteries, etc. They are not used to meeting outside such confines. I mean for instance, if I ask someone to join me for dinner they look at me puzzled and ask, ‘Why? Is it your birthday?’For me this is so strange. But with the

younger lot this is changing. The other thing that I miss is the near absence of skin. This doesn’t make me homesick but I feel like asking ‘where has all the skin gone?’In Europe we are so used to people wearing fewer clothes. It makes an intense visual difference. GS: What next? Francisco: A filmmaker never knows the future. It’s an interesting profession. A gypsy at least travels in a certain direction, say maybe according to the weather or food availability or a new market, but we absolutely don’t know what’s next. GS: When will you be visiting Goa next? Francisco: I am not a religious person, although I was raised like a Catholic, but I would live to come this year in December for St Francis Xavier’s exposition. In a way, it will be a tribute to my mother. Wherever she might be now I am sure she will be happy and smiling.

Karma Kurry

for the Mind, Body, Heart & Soul A Book Launch

The launch of Karma Kurry at the Broadway Book Centre, in Panjim

J

eroninio (Jerry) Almeida and Jyoti Nanda’s book Karma Kurry for the Mind, Body, Heart & Soul was launched recently at the Broadway Book Centre in Panjim. Bismarque Dias; Dental surgeon Dr Hubert Gomes and Principal of Vivek International HS, Chandigarh and writer Kimmy Dhanoa were the special guests for the occasion. The book is a compelling collection of life stories of ordinary citizens with an unbeatable spirit to transform the world. It includes inspiring stories about Anu Aga, Geeta Chandran, Rohini Nilekani, Chewang Norphel, Gul Panag, Anita Pratap, Gregory Roberts and others. The preface to Karma Kurry was written by Madiba ~ Nelson Mandela, who said, “These stories have that power to inspire people to rise and act; to make a difference.” The book has been dedicated to Jerry’s best friend Savio De Sa who passed away last year. Speaking on the occasion, Jerry said that “Karma Kurry is not just a book series, but a journey over a decade of discovering soul-stirring and heart-warming tales. These are stories of Karmaveer award recipients and heroes from across the world who have come “together as one to right every wrong.” The Karmaveer awards are given every year on 26/11 ~ the citizen action day.” Jerry also said that the next edition of Karma Kurry will feature eminent Goans Dr Hubert Gomes (Social Activist and Policitian) and Bismarque Dias (Social Activist). Jerry, who was the Master Strategist behind the reclaimed People Power campaign in 2011-12 to sensitize the people of Goa to rid public office from thieves and thugs who were in power, said that a lot still needs to be done to clean up the system and urged the people to vote responsibly. Dr Hubert Gomes, speaking at the book launch, said that these stories can inspire people as it’s about ordinary citizens who have done extraordinary work and in the process changed many lives. Commenting on the political scene, he said that the change should come within us rather than waiting for a political saviour to clean up the rot in our system. Bismarque Dias said that such stories inspire you more as they are about the real heroes of the world. Reel heroes are mere actors who act in order to

entertain people but real heroes are those that fight against all odds in real life situations no matter what the consequences and make a difference to the world. Jerry also spoke about starting a movement to change Goa from Vice Capital to Cultural Capital with the statues of Mermaid in Panjim and the Merman who will be installed in Campal Creek as the Mascots of Responsible Tourism. In his earlier life, Jerry also started the Joy of Giving movement which has become a Huge Philanthropic movement not only in India but also in the US and Europe. Jerry, who worked with the farmers of Maharashtra in the Farmers Suicide belt, was also nominated for the Magsaysay Award. Jerry became the first Goan to be nominated for this award in 2010, the same year when he partnered with Ms Neelima Mishra (Magsaysay award recipient 2010) to empower the farmers in Maharashtra. Jeroninio Almeida (Jerry) is a Teacher, Inspirational Orator, Leadership Coach, social entrepreneur. The driving force behind the International Confederation of NGOs is to inspire integrity of character by democratizing heroism through voluntary action. Jyoti Nanda is a teacher, special educator, author, editor and certified life coach.

3. Quality Control and Soil Investigation

By José Lourenço

T

he tragic collapse of a newly built building of Ruby Residency at Canacona has sent shock waves all over Goa. A four-storied block of flats came crashing down on 4th January, killing many workers (24 as of going to print), injuring many more and with more bodies expected to be recovered from the debris. This is the most terrible mishap in the Goa construction industry to date, and should open the eyes of the public on many aspects of the building scenario. Let us look at just three issues that have emerged from the Pandora’s Box at Canacona.

1. Risks of a Contractor-cumStructural engineer

The position of Structural Engineer in a building project is an important one and should be independently held. In the Ruby Residency project, Vishwas Desai of Coastal Builders was reportedly functioning as Contractor as well as Structural Engineer. In such a case, there are bound to be compromises made in checking and approving works for concreting and even in the design itself. A Contractor will seek to maximize profits, whereas a Structural Consultant has to adhere strictly to Building Codes for Quality and Stability. When one person plays both roles, there is no independent audit of quality and if that person is unscrupulous, quality will suffer. The Town Planners and Municipal chiefs must enforce this separation of roles. The Structural Engineer, or RCC consultant as he is often called, is usually an invisible cog in the industry. Flat buyers would do well to enquire into the track record and reputation of this important professional who will determine the life of their building (as well as their own lives!). Too often a crooked builder may employ an engineer

who is barely qualified and inexperienced for this vital role. Our government authorities place the liability of the building stability squarely on the project’s Structural Engineer and wash off their hands. If the Consultant bungles up the job, it is too late. Precious lives are lost and crores of rupees of hard earned savings end up in rubble. In countries like the UAE, after the Consultant has checked the work, the Contractor informs the local Municipality and then a Municipal Engineer inspects the concrete work and certifies it for casting. Without this approval, a slab cannot be concreted. Our Goa government engineers must intervene and check at crucial stages of construction, so that such tragedies do not take place. But if the government system itself is corrupted or if the government engineers are themselves incompetent, then the situation is hopeless.

2. The Hills are Unforgiving

Trying to grab and build on every square meter of a hillock is fraught with danger. The collapsed building was erected close to a retaining wall that had been backfilled. It goes without

saying that a building must have strong foundations. If columns settle at their foundations, a massive failure is imminent. There are some buildings in Panjim and Vasco and other areas that have been built on soft clayey soil, and over the decades they have sunk by several feet. If the land is flat and the subsoil strata is uniform, the entire building sinks gradually and uniformly over the years, but may not collapse. But when differential settlement occurs, where part of the building columns sink deeper than others, then the RCC frame of the building cannot remain stable and collapses. When rockslides occur in areas like Altinho, the load dispersion of the foundations of buildings on such hillslopes is affected and this can cause failure. Hence it is important to monitor steep slopes in residential areas and stabilize them wherever possible. Wisdom must prevail at the time of preparing site plans and placing buildings. This should not be done in the comfort of the office, but on the ground, where the obvious and potential risks are clearly seen. An Architect or Builder who sights a building on an unsafe slope is as guilty as the Structural Engineer who then goes ahead with the design.

The above factors seem to be applied only for large government and corporate projects in Goa. The average local builder does not carry out soil investigations. A test pit is usually dug to gauge the ground stability. Even a flat plot may have layers of slowly compressing clay beneath. There may be old buried wells or septic tanks on the site, or subterranean cavities caused by tree roots, etc. Many old abandoned stone quarries have been filled in Goa, their vast expanses becoming part of property developments. A house or building on such soil needs to be carefully designed, with enough bearing capacity and a well braced and laterally tied structure. Cube tests for testing compressive strength and slump tests for workability of concrete are rarely done. Even the concrete from Ready-Mix-Concrete (RMC) plants is sometimes of dubious quality, resulting in cracks on the slab surface and difficulties in setting. Auditing and surprise checks on RMC plants are the need of the hour, as more and more projects rely on this convenient supply of ready concrete. Finally, this should be a wakeup call for all old RCC framed buildings. Reinforced concrete came into Goa in the mid 1900s. There are still some old buildings like the Mandovi Hotel in Panjim that are in reasonably good shape because they are well maintained and given protective coats of paint regularly. Goa’s saline rains quickly eat away at the steel bars in concrete, shortening the building life. Look up at the soffit of the roof slab of the Goa University lobby and you will see corroded bars and loosening concrete in some areas. The Goa State Museum built on the reclaimed area of Patto in Panjim shows cracks in its plinth and along the walls, caused by settlement of the foundations. Many of the passages of commercial buildings and markets in Panjim, Margao, Vasco and Mapusa show disintegrating concrete slabs. Take a closer look at the exposed steel bars and you can see the steel has crumbled to nothing! It is time to ruthlessly condemn such structures (including the stressed out Zuari Bridge) and rebuild them with better material and methods. Else it is just a matter of time before the sky begins to fall on our heads.

o one doubts the need for a new garbage treatment plant for North Goa. Just take one look at the ubiquitous garbage strewn about the state and the need is clear. But for the people of Saligao, who have suffered for 26 years from an uncontrolled garbage dump in their midst, the site of the proposed new plant – just a short distance away from the current dump – is a big problem. And they’ve organized to fight it. The garbage at Salmona Hill in Saligao was first illegally dumped into a huge, empty laterite quarry that today has overflowed into a gigantic sea of garbage, estimated at 30,000 tons. By 2013, the waste had reached 90.7 tons per day from Calangute and Candolim alone, not counting the tons of garbage that comes in from the villages surrounding Saligao. Today, it is the largest garbage dump in Goa. The government is now proposing to install a modern garbage treatment plant on a site that is even closer to the beloved Salmona Spring than the existing dump – a proposal vehemently opposed by locals, who have suggested an alternative site some 700 metres away. The garbage wars of Saligao are thus in full swing. Garbage has been dumped illegally on the Salmona hill in Saligao since 1987. For all these years, this has caused problems for villagers living at the base of the hill and the surrounding areas of not only Saligao, but also of Candolim,

Calangute and Pilerne. Since the garbage is unsegregated, it contains tons of rotting food waste from hotels, medical waste, plastics, rubber, metal, glass and other non degradable material. The entire plateau is a huge laterite aquifer, acting like a sponge. During the rains this sponge soaks in pure rain water and stores it. During the rest of the year, the aquifer filters the water into the three surrounding springs, as well as the drinking-water wells of the three villages. The toxic material from the pit filled with garbage has seeped into this spongy formation and from there into their water table. It has contaminated the medicinal Salmona Spring water, which is of great importance to the locals. Chief minister Manohar Parrikar has directed the department of science, technology and environment to initiate land acquisition proceedings for about 94,000 square metres of land on the Saligao-Calangute hill, where the garbage treatment plant for North Goa coastal villages is planned. The village Panchayat as well as the Communidade of Saligao have passed a resolution opposing the government’s plans. The High Court has also issued a judgment against setting up such a plant on the Saligao Plateau. The government has also been asked to clear up the existing mess, which has not happened till date. Eknath Oraskar, sarpanch of Saligao says, “Initially garbage was being dumped in a quarry in

Salmona and the water from here has seeped and gone deep, polluting all the surrounding springs and wells. The water in this area is not potable anymore.” He adds, “The land where the garbage treatment plant is to be set up is in Calangute but it is close to Saligao. We are waiting to see how long the government will take to go about with the full process. It may take even a couple of years or so for this garbage to be cleared and the new Garbage Treatment Plant (GTP) to be set up.” Few disagree with the need for a new garbage treatment plant in North Goa. The Sarpanch of Parra, Delilah Lobo, states, “The new Garbage treatment plant will be a solution to the garbage issue of the areas on the coastal belt. Perhaps I would like to state this treatment plant is the need of the hour as we see garbage nearly everywhere we go.” Delilah is the wife of Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, and Parra is part of the Calangute Constituency. Saligao citizens say they are not against the treatment plant, but don’t want it just above the Salmona Hill. They’re demanding the plant be shifted to the proposed alternative site, that there be a dedicated approach road to the plant as opposed to having garbage trucks passing through residential areas of Saligao, and a complete cleanup of the present dump site, among other demands. So far there’s little indication of any desire to meet their demands. And villagers are filing a new petition with the High Court.
